After a winter that seemed excessively long (in fact, it seems to have lasted a year) many of us are ready to get out into spring 2021. We have explored every inch we could of our island over the 12 months, and we may be ready for some new adventures. Well, there is no need to leave the island just yet. A recent collaboration spearheaded by the Nantucket Land Bank has led to a brand new trails map connecting the properties of three island organizations. The West End Trail Map highlights properties from the Nantucket Land Bank, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation. This new map highlights well-known properties such as Sanford Farm and also explores lesser-known additions such as Trott’s Hills and Sanford Meadows. The properties of this western end create a mosaic of conservation ownership. However, as the crow flies, the adjoining acreage provides significant area for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. This area of the island now contains one of the largest, contiguous blocks of protected conservation land, second only to the Middle Moors. Sanford Farm, owned by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF), marks the easternmost property on the map. Already one of the most popular properties on the island, Sanford Farm connects to Sanford Meadows, immediately to the west and owned by the Nantucket Land Bank. Both properties are part of the agricultural history of Nantucket and were once a dairy farm. The long history of grazing by sheep and cows removed much of the tall, woody vegetation. As a result, the area is now comprised of rolling sandplain grassland full of sedges, grasses, wildflowers, and a plethora of other herbaceous species. continued on page 10

by Robert P. Barsanti Snow shovels didn’t get much use this year. They sat at the ready in the front of the shed, poised for action in the snowy New England weather. The ghosts of my childhood clustered around them, holding hands and looking to the sky. Back in the golden age of youth, I shoveled driveways for a few of the neighbors in my childhood home north of Boston. Patterns are useful, I would begin up at the door to the garage, and then heave the snow into a pile, square by square until I came to the snow plows berm. Mr. and Mrs. Boysen would watch from a big picture window while my youth burned their driveway clear, and then they gave me a glass of orange juice and a windmill cookie. And cash. Behind the idle shovels, their ghosts stood with my father and looked at the sky. They may still be there now, but the shovels have retreated to the back of the shed, amid the volleyball nets and historical artifacts from the old Henry’s. The golf clubs have replaced them, with a similar pair of eyes focused on the sky. My mother died when I was in my twenties. In the weeks and months that followed, I conjured her and placed her on the sofa, or in the classroom, or in the passenger seat. At that age, I had no idea of the magnitude of her loss; and the hole that she has left has only increased as the miles have passed. By the act of imagination and grief, she could at least drop some of her sharp words and nasty, humorous jabs. But the years, the children, the parties, the dinners, and the desserts have piled interest over interest on her debt and death. Such is the curse of survival. The longer you live, the greater the debt. I have spent a long time on this island; the streets fill with the ghosts of the people I knew, whom I taught, whom I worked with, and with whom I heard the bells at midnight. To me, in my internal defaults, Nantucket will always be what it was in continued on page 14

A Bear, a Boat, and a Reunion, Oh MY! by Tim Ehrenberg Marketing Director for Nantucket Book Partners, Nantucket Book Festival, and creator of Tim Talks Books
What do a bear, sailing, and a family reunion all have in common? This may sound like the beginning of a bad joke between co-workers, but they are actually all subjects of new Nantucket books by local authors available this spring at your island indie bookstores, Mitchell’s + Bookworks. All are available as autographed copies in stores or online at nantucketbookpartners.com. The first needs no introduction, especially if you’re a kid on Nantucket: Where, Oh Where is Barnaby Bear? Well, he is in a brand-new edition available now by author and illustrator Wendy Rouillard (published by Andrews McMeel). The book follows Barnaby and friends on a rhyming adventure with colorful illustrations. The story has an appealing sing-song cadence that children will want to repeat each night before bed. It made the perfect gift for all of the kids in my life earlier this Spring. Even actress Drew Barrymore exclaimed that “Barnaby Bear is a true treasure!” I chatted with Barnaby’s creator, Wendy Rouillard, and I just had to know where the idea of Barnaby originally came from. “Barnaby the Bear is real,” she said. “Barnaby was a stuffed bear that first belonged to my grandmother, and then, a generation later, to my mother. He was well-loved and tattered with a few little holes by the time my mother gave him to me. I held his hand on the first day of school, and he was a frequent visitor at “show and tell.” Years later, while Wendy was a student at Parsons School of Design in New York City, she discovered Nantucket and fell in love with our little island 30 miles out to sea. “I decided to combine my love of writing and drawing and create a book about Barnaby, a Nantucket Bear. That is how it all began! Twenty years later, I am still living on the island, creating new adventures about Barnaby and raising two young girls, Annecy and Ondine.” Wendy has self-published the Barnaby book series for years and now is thrilled to be with Andrews McMeel, making Barnaby a household name across the country. Her perseverance, creativity, and energy is one for the books and an inspiration to all. This new edition of Where, Oh Where is Barnaby Bear is sure to attract a whole new generation of young readers searching for a new friend. “This book encourages children to step out into the world, to be brave, and to enjoy the simple things in life - a story that I told my daughter when she was three. Islander and author Alfred Sanford writes, “My father started taking me sailing in Nantucket harbor before I can remember. I awoke into this world of sailing. I discover, occasionally, an instinctive knowledge of sailing that will surprise me when, finding myself in a novel, unusual situation, I seem to know just what to do—without knowing how I know it. Maybe from a previous life?” Alfie’s new book is the result of his lifetime (the current one) quest to build
a really good ocean sailing boat. Alfie explains, “This quest turned to wooden construction with the Alerion Class Sloop project done here on Nantucket in 1977. With it, my brother and I pioneered epoxy-bonded, cold-molded wood construction. We adapted that technology to ocean-going sailboats with the FANCY project in California in 1983 and I continued it with the STARRY NIGHT project in Chatham in 2009. It takes three projects to perfect an idea, and, rather than physically build the third boat, I verbally described the building of it in WB for BWS. This both saved a lot of cash, it also created a form (book) to widely disseminate the ideas involved. Wood is good—we know that—but you can learn why by reading Wooden Boats for Blue Water Sailing.” The book is not only a technical guide to boatbuilding, it is also a philosophical, at times poetical, book on sailing. It discusses the history, development, and purpose of this beloved water sport. “Exploring the world’s mysteries from the deck of a small sailboat propelled by the wind under the influence of your own wits and skills, is the most magnificent of personal accomplishments. Amateur ocean sailing developed during the first half of the 20th century and reached its peak during the two decades after WWII. Then, mass-marketed boats subtly undercut the bond between the sailor and his boat. The sport lost its meaning.” Alfie’s book is sure to put some wind back into the sport’s sails. Roger C. Spring Art Exhibits
Over the past 13 months, the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) has mastered a hybrid mix of in-person and virtual ways to share members’ artwork. With some occupancy limits still in place in Massachusetts, art shows and gallery openings during spring of 2021 will feature a mix of in-person and online shows. In celebration of the longer days of spring on Friday, April 23, The Artists Association will open Starting Over, an in-person exhibit in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Gallery at 19 Washington Street. “As we continue to navigate during this world-wide pandemic but look forward to the season ahead, we thought Starting Over a great title for our first official member exhibition of the year. This first floor show will give visitors the chance to view new works completed by our artists during the off-season,” said AAN artistic director Robert Frazier. “A new season is always interesting because you have a chance to see what perspectives might have inspired our artists, and if anyone has taken a different approach with their art. Each artist has been invited to bring in two works, and we are looking forward to a safe and exciting season in the gallery,” added Frazier. “The AAN includes close to 300 local artist members who participate throughout the year in online as well as gallery exhibitions, and we are grateful they continue to help make our award-winning AAN gallery one of the most comprehensive venues for local art. Their works include everything from jewelry, oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, photographs, and some textiles,” said AAN gallery manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. Starting Over will be on display through May 24; the gallery is open TuesdaySaturday, from 11 am to 5 pm. On May 1, Spring Forward, AAN’s first spring online show will open at NantucketArts.org. Featuring new works by member artists, this show will continue through the month of May. And on May 11, the Artists Association’s popular Plein Art Festival begins. This year the annual festival will be extended to last a six weeks, through June 16. New wet works will be for sale each day in the AAN Gallery starting May 28, and AAN’s 10th annual Paint Out at Brant Point beach, open to all artists, will be held on June 9 and 10. Remnants of the agrarian past also include an old dairy farm, hunting preserve, and a woodland known as the "Long Woods" that was referenced in documents and land agreements dating back centuries to the first few years of English settlement on the island. South of Sanford Meadows, multiple trails connect to Head of the Plains (HOP), an area owned by both NCF and the Nantucket Land Bank (NLB). HOP is a vast region of conservation land, with more than 1,000 acres to explore. The sandplain grassland and heathland habitats support a colorful array of wildflowers that bloom throughout the season, leading to a diverse assembly of insect pollinators. This area was part of the “common land” that was set aside by Nantucket’s colonial shareholders for grazing sheep and cows and for farming. Some of the trails from Sanford Meadows cross over into an area off of Madaket Road known as Trott’s Hills. Trott’s Hills is another area owned in parts by NCF and NLB. The rolling hills of these properties are remnants of Nantucket’s glacial history. According to the map, “The weathered hills that are now found here are the remains of sand, gravel, and cobble that was transported with the ice and deposited as the glacier began to melt and retreat to the north.” To the west of Trott’s Hills, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation’s 275 acres surrounds the north head of Long Pond. Comprised of sandplain grasslands, heathlands, coastal shrublands, and a diversity of wetlands, the LLNF property is maintained as a wildlife preserve with no hunting or dogs allowed. The trails meander through the property, offering views of Nantucket Sound as well as Long Pond and to Madaket Harbor on clear days. Long Pond itself has an interesting history. It was created by glacial outwash running primarily north-south like many of Nantucket’s great ponds. Long Pond is now tidally influenced due to the “Madaket Ditch” which connects Long Pond out to Hither Creek and Madaket harbor. These waterways were continued on page 13

fruitful fishing grounds and home to a historic fishing weir used by the Wampanoag and the earliest English settlers of the island, who dug the original ditch in the 1600s. Moving even further west we come to Eel Point, a productive barrier beach habitat and adjacent harbor-facing saltmarsh that is popular with fisherman and birders. Eel Point is home to a healthy and vibrant population of shorebirds (Piping Plover, Least Tern, American Oystercatcher) and marsh-dwelling birds (Saltmarsh Sparrows). This dynamic property is shaped by westerly currents and storms accreting sand on the north side of the island. Much of this area on the West End Trail Map is made up of early successional habitats, primarily the globally rare sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands. As such, these habitats require regular disturbance to be maintained. As you walk through these various properties, you may see evidence of mowed habitats, cut trees and shrubs, and other disturbances, possibly including prescribed fires. These methods are used by various on-island organizations to manage the habitats. Management has also been conducted for fire prevention such as seen at Trott’s Hills adjacent to the Madaket Landfill. The West End Trail Map highlights multiple parking lots where the properties and trails can be accessed. If you’ve been to some of these properties before, this map may help you can locate a new entrance or trail connection, bringing a new perspective to a familiar spot. The trails of Trott’s Hills, for example, have been a brand new experience for me this past fall and early winter. Explore a new trail one day at a time. Or you join in the next cross-island hike organized by the Nantucket Land Bank (slated for October 2021). 1987. Because my default settings take over, I am forever headed to stores and restaurants that only exist in my own map. I am a part of everywhere I have eaten, and a part of me still celebrates Wing Night, spoons Brotherhood chowder, and gets an Italian Sub from Henry’s. The winter was bad for the specters, with the closing of The Brotherhood and other local landmarks. With the loss of the Brotherhood, the haunts of my youth have dwindled to smaller and smaller numbers. My ghosts and I mourn the loss of curly fries, crazy drinks, and wing night. In the bright mornings, the dawn seeps in over the head of the harbor, the hedges call and warble, and the puddles grow, drain, and sprout yellow leaves. Then the hammers start. When I am haunted by ghosts and bedeviled by their words, the new owners with their bright plans bother me. I remember fields that I walked past... I remember the old couple that lived in that house... I sat on that back deck... and all that was has been ripped up, reused, or rejected. The ghosts cry in my ear. But you can only bear so many tears. Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder if the ghosts are just a trick of the eye and the ego. The Boysens only exist in my mind: no one else shoveled their driveway in the damp March mornings. My mother remains a ghost to me, but only to me and vanishingly few others. The ghosts, God bless them, do not belong to the fields, houses, or restaurants. They belong to me. I am all whom I have met, I have bent to the past as trees bend to the wind. My mother, the Boysens, my sister, and everyone else are planks and beams that I have taken from the bulk trash at the dump and with which I have built my house. They exist so long as I exist. And then, when I go, the bits and pieces of my house—the drawer handles, the paintings, the door knobs, and the extra wide planks—will go on to furnish another house. We live on an island that is washing away in the basin of time. The ocean, the wind, the storms whisk away the sand under our homes and drop it out into the Atlantic. Change is constant. For years, the Native Americans cut all of the wood down, then the settlers came, and let their animals graze the Nantucket’s vegetation down to fairway grass, and now the landscape architects are planting the trees and sculpting the backyards. Change keeps happening. In the churn of my digital life, a picture of my son at Cisco beach appeared. The town had just made the new parking lot and he stood a good seventy-five yards beyond the posts, peering over the edge of the bluff. The years, the sand, and the ghosts aren’t coming back. Or, rather, I am comprised of them. There are days, when the clouds hang low and the wind picks up, that I feel that I have become an estate sale: my ideas, my words, my gestures are borrowed from others gone before. They have been assembled today and will be disbursed to new homes tomorrow. I stood in class yesterday and set my students off on their next essay with a phrase I stole thirty years ago from a woman I kayaked with on Hurricane Island: “Let’s show, let’s go, Let’s rodeo.” I am not surrounded by ghosts, but have been built by them, fastened together by fortune and accident, then beset by wind and tide.

tionships, something that was difficult to nurture during social distancing and the pandemic this past year. “Oddly, this pandemic brought me much closer to my family,” Nancy explained. “My sister Martha lives in Kansas City and we’ve never been so close, although Patrick Mahomes is part of the reason, too. We talked by phone every day. Martha and I, (not Mahomes.) She set up a message cluster with my son, Josh and his husband, David. They live in Arizona, and we four had some absolutely hilarious times together. My daughter and her husband and Tommy knew Charley and I missed spending Christmas at their house, so last spring they started a tradition of Thursday night dinners, where we all Facetimed while we ate dinner, so Charley and I could have a sense of life as normal for them. My sister, to whom Family Reunion is dedicated, fell in love with the family’s new baby, Winnie, and sent them 1,500 live ladybugs and a ladybug house. But nothing over technology can replace a real live hug.” Nancy is not only a prolific writer, she also is an avid reader. She recommends her friend Brenda Novak’s new book The Bookstore on the Beach for “a page-turner with a deep heart. A grandmother, mother, daughter combo, and a sparkling plot.” Saturday, April 24 marks the official celebration of Independent Bookstore Day. Indie Bookstore Day is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country. Independent bookstores, like all businesses, have struggled during this pandemic, but indie bookstores have been struggling long before COVID-19. Bookstores are a cornerstone of any community. These bookstores are two of the only businesses that truly stay open year-round on Nantucket to be able to fulfill this responsibility. We believe books give people the chance to travel when they can’t leave their home, spend time with others (albeit in a book) when they can’t see people, and help them feel a little less alone and afraid during these unknown times.

The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest and savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach. Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong. Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Surf and rip currents can be dangerous. Parking. No facilities or food service. Families with very young children may prefer Miacomet Pond. South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities. Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.
BAY & POND BEACHES Miacomet Pond: Fresh water pond on Nantucket. Good for young children. Parking; no lifeguard, no facilities. Snapping turtles may be encountered.
Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities. Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong. Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
