During the first 80 years of the United States of America, the China trade helped our new nation’s growth, economically and commercially. Merchants up and down the East Coast, including from Nantucket, sailed East to trade ginseng, furs, sandalwood, and silver for colorful silks, aromatic teas, exquisitely crafted porcelain, and other exotic goods. Friday, May 27, at 10 am, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will host an exhibition of Asian Treasures from the Billings Collection in the Whaling Museum’s McCausland Gallery. The exhibition draws from the collection that longtime Nantucket residents and world travelers David Billings and Beverly Hall Billings have assembled over half a century. It all started with a book and two pieces of Asian art David Billings received as a gift, and now their collection includes 4,000 artifacts. The items in the collection elucidate political, economic, and religious events and, at the same time, present enormous aesthetic appeal. Most illustrate significant Chinese innovations and discoveries over the millennia. Most pieces included in the show are being shown for the first time publicly, and the NHA is excited to be able to give islanders and visitors the A pair of large kingfisher feather-embell- opportunity to see a significant porished gilt metal finials of a roaring dragon, tion of the Billings Collection. Our island’s history is rich with tales of drama and courage. The Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum is devoted to sharing these stories, as Dir. of Education Evan Schwanfelder describes them: “Stories of the high seas that rise from the depths of despair to the peak of human hope and salvation.” A visit to the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum brings to life the island’s surfmen who lived by the motto “You have to go out, but you don't have to come back.” For the 2022 season, the museum will open to the public at 10 am on Friday, May 27. This year’s featured exhibit, Gallant Guardians: The Nantucket Lightships, is second in a series honoring and describing the organizations that came together in 1915 to form the U.S. Coast Guard. It presents the story of the U.S. Lighthouse Service, focusing on the Nantucket Lightships. Visitors will learn about the island’s lifesaving history through tales of grit and determination from when service and self-sacrifice embodied the gallantry of Nantucket lifesavers. For 130 years, through fog, wars, storms, and navigational folly, men aboard anchored Lightships stood guard, warning and protecting mariners from the danger of the treacherous South Shoals. Their tales are dramatic: lightships and their crew were vital to shipping, but helpless at their stations. They could be blown off their moorings and set adrift or crushed by ice. One was cut in half by a passing ship, and another was dragged out to sea and vanished with her crew. Through October 10, the public can experience this maritime history with exhibits and multi-media displays Monday-Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays from noon to 4 pm. The museum is located at the edge of the beautiful Folger’s Marsh at 158 Polpis Road, and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and to watch the wide variety of birds. Parking is limited, but courtesy rides to the musuem on The Shipwreck Shuttle depart from the Visitors’ Center downtown on Federal Street Monday-Saturday, starting at 9:30 am on May 30. The museum participates in the Blue Star program, offering free admission to active members of the military and their families. Details on programs are at eganmaritime.org. Sail Endeavor a Nantucket tradition.
by C. Oscar Olson
established 1982
Nantucket is a place where, in more ways than one, time seems to stand still. Ageless architecture, timeless tradition, and untouched landscapes make this island unique in so many wonderful ways. Modern technology makes better the life of every person, and, though that is an undeniable reality, there’s certainly something to be said for doing things the old way. Which might be why slower, older things tend to get a foothold on this island 30 miles out to sea. From hand-carved signs adorning storefronts to handmade boats peppering the seashore, keeping with tradition means certain skills will simply never go out of style. One of the oldest and most important of those is blacksmithing. Robots, A.I., and automation have not won the day just yet. Born and raised on the island, Nantucketer Keaton Goddard always knew he wanted to work with his hands. “I knew it’s what I wanted to do, and I knew I wanted to work for myself,” he says. “There was a passion waiting for me that I could turn in to a business.” After spending eight years working the craft as a hobby and a few years in sales with a metal-working company, it was just two years ago that Keaton stepped things up and walked his own road. Though he is self taught, his degree mechanical engineering surely comes in handy. “I’ve always been good with my hands and enjoy working with my hands,” he said. “I decided to try it and it went off from there. It started out as a hobby and just went crazy.” His hard work was noticed by the right people, and he was invited to participate on a popular television show. When he received a message online from someone representing Forged in Fire, the reality television show about blacksmithing that airs on The History Channel, he initially thought it was simply a scam. But it was the real deal. Keaton was featured on an episode called “Japanese Ono,” season 7 episode 33, where he won first place and earned the title of

Start the Season with Laughter Theatre Workshop of Nantucket is raising the curtain on their 2022 season on May 26 with Meteor Shower, a new comedy from the genius mind of Steve Martin. With his trademark absurdist humor, Martin bends the fluid nature of time and reality to create a surprising and unforgettably funny new play. Over the course of a crazy, starlit dinner party, the wildly unexpected occurs among four main characters, played by [l to r] Verity Branco, Mollie Vogt-Welch, David T. Patterson, and Jeremy Webb, directed by Justin Cerne. This TWN production is showing May 26, 27, and 28, and Tuesday through Saturday from May 31 to June 18. Tickets for Meteor Shower are on sale now at theatrenantucket.org. And save the date of August 14 for Theatre Workshop’s Studio 65 benefit celebration: tickets will go on sale soon.

Roll into Summer with Sandy Pedals
Being “Foggy” Can Be Delicious!
Nantucket has more than 35 miles of bicycle paths that will lead bikers to nearly a dozen different areas of our island. You can ride the paths to beaches, to town, to Madaket, to Surfside, to Polpis, to Cisco, and to Siasconset. Biking is a great way to explore Nantucket, but if you are not an avid biker, you could think that a 2- or 5- or 9-mile bike ride is beyond your capability. Think again! Thomas Holt started his company Sandy Pedals to bring the accessibility and convenience of electric bikes to everyone age 18 to 75. Sandy Pedal bikes have pedal assist motors that can go up to 14 miles per hour (people walk at approximately 3.5 miles per hour), making a bike ride from downtown Nantucket out to Surfside Beach for a day in the sun or out to Cisco Brewers for some live music and a cold brew doable for almost anyone. And you don’t have to find parking! Sandy Pedals is a bike share company with “hubs” where you may pick up or drop off a bike at 60 spots around Nantucket. The process is simple and done through an app that can be downloaded from links on sandypedalsbikes.com Bikes are available for a few hours, a week, or a month—there’s even an option for a 1-year pass with unlimited rides. You can even reserve a Sandy Pedals bike, so you’ll know there’s one available when you get to the hub. A helmet comes with each bike, and all bikes have “step-through” frames to suit any rider. Owner Thomas Holt describes Sandy Pedals as “a public service that gives people an affordable option to get from Point A to Point B around our island...and you can get there without being exhausted!”
Whether you’re ordering for one or need a feast to feed your family & friends, Foggy Nantucket Pizza & BBQ is the place to order. Chef-owners Shaun and Amanda Riley are passionate about their food, their family, and their Nantucket customers. One of the few family businesses still on the island, they aim to make everyone happy: from the little ones to grandma and everyone in between. Their menu offerings include hearty Salads made-to-order with housemade dressings like smoked jalapeno ranch and honey lime vinaigrette, BBQ and Specialty Sandwiches (our staff adores their smoky, salty, sweet, and spicy Hawaiian Bovine), BBQ Plates & Smoked Meats, and more than a dozen varieties of Thick Crust Pan Pizzas and Thin Crust Pizzas with freshly made pizza dough and marinara prepared daily. Got a crowd to feed? Foggy Nantucket has BBQ Family Packs featuring pulled pork, smoked chicken, pork rib racks, brisket, or all five. And their freshly made sides can’t be beat: coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans (flavored with the BBQ burnt ends), and housemade mac-n-cheese which is a definite kid favorite. Their freshly baked garlic knots are positively addicting. Shaun and Amanda grew up down South, so they know BBQ – they like it smoky-sweet. They dry rub and smoke all the meats in-house with hickory wood. If you have room for dessert (and you may not!), they have Fruit Crisp, Cheesecakes, Peanut Butter Pie, an amazing Lemoncello Marscarpone Cake, and Cinna Knots with icing. Hungry yet? To place your order, go to foggynantucket.com to see their current menu (they often add something new and seasonal) and to order online or call them at 508-680-1737. They’ll tell you what time to drive to their location at 147 Orange Street, and they’ll bring the food to your car.

A Moment in the Fog of In-Between
Page 9
by Robert P. Barsanti In May, the boat trudges. You round Brant Point and watch the houses disappear into the fog, then the jetty fades and you are stuck in-between. In the new millennium, you can cross the Sound with games, movies, or card games. Or you can just watch the fog blow by and wait. When you are stuck in-between, we wait with skill and practice. As soon as we get there, we can get a Big Mac, donuts, and a new iPhone. Until then, we watch the fog tick by. We have been rolling in the fog for the last few weeks. Spring has ticked over on the mainland; the maples, the elms, and even the sober oaks have unfurled the lightest of green and felt it deepen and mature at the furthest edge of summer. Across the state, the school room windows are open, a breeze begs its way across the floor, and the students cry for a class outside. But early this May, time on Nantucket rolled back to mid-March The wind blew strong and cold, the boats remained in Hyannis, and the contractors call the excuses in to their clients. For our visitors, the weather has become a sick joke. Steve and Sarah left Greenwich and Newton in short sleeves, with the air conditioning on. The purple fog mounts the horizon as soon as they cross the bridge, then surrounds them as they approach Hyannis. Shivering as they walk down to the boat, they ask “Is it always like this?” No. Never. Better get some polar fleece. We drift “in-between.” The summer, with its lines, and its demands, and its invoices sits two hundred feet over the island. Sunburns and sunglasses are five minutes and a strong wind away. There are so many things to do when we get there; we never stop. We have jobs, we have friends, we have a nice couple from Hingham who are renting the basement for Wine Festival. For the moment, in the “in-between,” we wait, watch, and do the laundry. Real life happens between laundry loads. continued on page 18

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Spring on Nantucket; one day you’re frolicking in the sunshine wearing short sleeves and planning your summer garden, and the next day you’re wearing a wooly cap and down jacket to go to the grocery store. Depending on when you read this, the pendulum could be swinging in either direction. Whatever the weather, it’s always a good time to get out for a nature exploration—just make sure to dress in layers. The recent wet weather followed by a few days of sunshine has resulted in a lot of foggy warm days: the Gray Lady is really showing up lately. Some of nature’s most under-appreciated treasures thrive in the heavy, thick air—ideal conditions for many mushrooms and other fungi. One of my favorite nature walk finds to keep an eye out for is a fungus that loves fog and sand, a true Nantucket native: the earthstar fungus. Earthstars are fungi that look like a ping pong ball perched on a leathery star. Each has a spore sac in the center (like a puffball mushroom) with an outer leathery shell. The center is white initially, but turns brown and powdery when the spores mature. Once mature, the leathery skin splits open and the split ends winding up resembling a star measuring about 1.5-3 inches across when open. The earthstars found on Nantucket are from the genus Astraeus, also known as the “Barometer Earthstars.” There are nine species in this genus, which are visually very similar. Only recently has DNA research split the species. In Greek mythology, Astraeus was one of the Titans, responsible for the stars. His name means "the starry one." This charismatic fungus is known as Barometer Earthstar because it has a strongly hygroscopic character— meaning it reacts to the level of humidity in the air. When the air is moist or when it rains, the leathery points open almost like a blossom and expose the puffball center. As the rain begins, the different parts of the hygroscopic rays absorb water at different rates, causing them to unfold to expose the center puffball. When the air is dry, the points fold up around the puffball (the spore sac) to protect it from weather and from various predators. To continued on page 20

New AAN Art Shows
The Artists Association of Nantucket is happy to once again be hosting a Summer Small Works Exhibition beginning on Friday, May 27 in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, located at 19 Washington Street. “Each artist may bring in up to six works that must measure 12 by 16 inches or smaller,” explained Gallery Director Peter Greenhalgh. “With dazzling works in oils, watercolors, acrylics, woodcuts, ceramics, jewelry and photographs, all works will emphasize the broad talents and diversity of our members. The Summer Small Works show is a favorite AAN tradition for artists and customers, and there is always something for every taste and style.” AAN Director and Curator Robert Frazier adds: “We’ve recently accepted close to twenty new artist members and are looking forward to their involvement, so the Small Works show is a wonderful way to welcome them as they exhibit alongside our established artist members.” A stone’s throw from Main Street, this AAN gallery is one of the most comprehensive venues for local art, and their contributing artists have helped to make the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery an award-winning home for the arts. Summer Small Works will be on display until June 20 in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District. The gallery is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm. Also opening on May 27 is AAN’s newest online exhibition, Works of Summer, with art available all day every day through June 15. “With the excitement of summer fast approaching, we thought these works showcasing seasonal imagery would afford our audiences a sneak peek at what makes a Nantucket summer so special,” says Frazier. “These curated online shows remain quite popular, thus we are happy to give those not able to get to the island a chance to acquire some beautiful local art from the comfort of their own homes, wherever they may be.” New works will be added throughout the exhibition, and with close to 300 artist members, there is a vast range and remarkable selection of pieces available for purchase. Online works include oils, watercolor, pastels, mixed media, ceramics, photographs, textiles, and some jewelry. “With the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington St. now open, these online shows exhibiting work that is not found in the gallery give our artists an additional venue in which to showcase their art,” says Greenhalgh. Pieces are available to view at nantucketarts.org/art. Return often for new works.

spaces on the island equipped to present pieces like these safely and securely. The exhibition will feature paintings, textiles, bronzes, and jade items. However, ceramics will predominate, including some of the earliest-known pieces of earthenware from 5,000 BCE and porcelain that dates from the Qing Dynasty, the last Imperial Chinese Dynasty. The exhibit will also include a scholar’s table, featuring items an ancient Chinese scholar might have used to contemplate and write, a Japanese Buddhist household shrine, and robes from the imperial court. While the Billings Collection concentrates on China, additional pieces will appear from India, Burma, Tibet, Korea, and Japan. Among the many captivating objects is a pair of exquisite gold finials inlaid with rare kingfisher feathers, a selection of Chinese snuff bottles, Tibetan and tea ceremony objects, a large Butsudan shrine, a Jin Rickshaw, and a wonderfully articulated diorama of a Peking opera. A Jade body suit burial cleverly concealed will round out this exceptional exhibition. "This exhibition offers an extraordinary and rare opportunity to discover and examine works of art that reveal Asian culture right here on Nantucket. It also highlights that Nantucketers have varied interests and collections that can broaden all of our perspectives," states Chip Carver, NHA Board President. Though it was an incredible experience, things didn’t quite take off as Keaton expected after the show. “I thought it would change my career, but after the lights went out my 15 minutes were over.” He does, however, run a very successful YouTube channel, followers of which are no doubt fans of the show. The page is called “Faraway Forge,” and he currently has close to 800,000 followers. For Keaton, what once was a hobby is now a full time job. One knife takes about four or five hours to make, while a sword and bigger blades can take up to 80 hours. Between salvaging the used metal, forging, sanding, and polishing the blade, his work is a serious commitment. Not to mention the filming and editing video for his YouTube channel, where he shows only his hands: bare and calloused or in well-worn leather gloves. Much of his work has a postapocalyptic feel: pieces crafted from long forgotten car parts and assorted scraps of metal. Striking a unique balance between form and function, his pieces
close to his heart: transforming what once was junk into something useful and beautiful, and video games which were a much-loved mainstay of his childhood. With a “Call of Duty” inspired Bowie knife, The Master’s Sword from “Legend of Zelda,” and a blazing katana straight from the Star Wars universe, his work is in a class by itself. He strives to create a marriage of form and function in everything he creates. Most all of his materials are upcycled from what would otherwise be trash and cost him nothing. Leaf springs—the long, flat, and flexible lengths of steel that serve as suspension in almost every vehicle on the road—are his favorite raw material to work with. Not only are they free and abundant, but they are infinitely versatile when it comes to blacksmithing. Over the years, this once essential profession has more or less faded into obscurity. Before mass production, handmade metal tools and other implements made life immeasurably easier for our ancestors. According to archaecontinued on page 17

ological evidence, blacksmithing dates back well over 3,000 years, with the earliest evidence of ironwork found in Syria. Considering most blacksmiths deal with iron, it should come as no surprise that the initial boom was during the iron age. The profession landed on American soil when explorers like Christopher Columbus and Leif Ericsson arrived in the New World. It is very likely that the Norse were the first blacksmiths in the Americas, after arriving in what is now Northeastern Canada. The United States, especially New England, would not be what it is today without this essential skill. For a long time, blacksmithing was one of the world’s most important jobs. With the growing need for skilled experts in the trades, and a harkening back to simpler things, the craft is seeing a resurgence. During the early days of Nantucket whaling, when crews were away on long voyages of 3-, 4-, or even 5-years, the local economy was kept alive by crafts. Coopers, chandlers, boat builders, and, of course, blacksmiths all helped keep the island afloat. On May 24 and 25, Keaton will help bring this island history to life when he teaches a Decorative Arts class for the Nantucket Historical Association: Blacksmithing 101. He’ll focus on basic blacksmithing techniques and guide students to make a blade from an iron railroad spike in this workshop. Participants may gain the knowledge required to continue to pursue the craft outside of the class. Register for Keaton’s class at nha.org/whats-on/programs/decorative-arts For now, Keaton does most of his work in his basement shop, but there’s a lot more to look forward to on the horizon. “I’m in the middle of building a shop right now, and with any luck we’ll be offering classes before this summer is over.” In addition to his hand-hammered metal work, Keaton also spends his time helping a variety of local professionals and businesses. “I do a lot of custom metal fabrication,” he says, “I help to fix equipment used in restaurants and for other businesses on-island.” With more material and supply-chain shortages every day, Keaton will surely have plenty of work to do in the coming months. In a world where convenience is king, patience is certainly a virtue. But doing things the old way, and maybe the right way, will never go out of style. To learn more about Keaton and his upcoming projects and to peruse his online store, visit farawayforge.com. He hosts an incredible and beautiful selection of knives, blades, and axes for the cook, the outdoorsman, and even just for fun. You'll also find apparel brought to you in collaboration with the talented artist Nick Low, who seamlessly combines his clean artistic style with the crazy blades forged at the Faraway Forge.

A Moment in the Fog of In-Between
from page 9
At school, the seniors mark time. Jess and Jennifer have chosen their next destination, whether for work or for school, and their days in desks and lockers just drift on by. They sit, peering through the fog, and hang fire. For today sits in videos and exams and bells between classes, but through the fog they can see the sharp edges and glittering flashes. They are never coming back here again. In short order, Jess and Jennifer will learn the disappointment of destinations. You wait, and you wait, and you wait, and then, when you get to Olde Ivy the bathrooms are backed up, the traffic rants, and you have to do your own laundry. You don’t feel the magic change; Cinderella’s fairy godmother doesn’t bop you on the head with “Bippitty-Boppity-Boo” and transform you into the Heart Breaking and Beautiful Princess. If you get lucky, you might get to be the footman. More likely, you remain the same bag of flesh you have always been, just in a new zip code with clean underwear. Adulting is what fills up your laundry basket But the destination and the transformation, is not just an arrival but a departure. That’s the trick. Jennifer arrives at Olde Ivy all by herself—without Jess, and Amy and Kelly, who rode around in the back of the jeep memorizing Taylor Swift and eating Veggie Straws. Those girls, while they are stuck in the fog, will drift into the word “Never.” It will never be like this again; everything changes and nothing changes back. On island, we believe in circles and cycles. The seasons and the visitors come in waves and leave in waves. Surfside opens in June, closes in September, and then waits to open up again. As do the restaurants, as do the stores: “Never” doesn’t feel like a stop on the cycle, only “Later.” But the Jennifer that walks across the stage in May will not be the same Jennifer that walks off the boat next June. She can never go back to high school, she can never play lacrosse again, she can never spend a singing night with her best buds as they bump dirt roads. Nor will her island. We drive the same streets, avoid the same people, and walk the same path around the produce, but this island slowly changes. In the fog of the in-between, the land shifts. Or more to the point, it gets dug up into big piles so a new basement can be put in for the next investment-grade property. continued on page 19

Just because we are surrounded by fog doesn’t mean we aren’t moving. The cherry trees have blossomed, the forsythia hangs on, and nature keeps ticking by in an unending stream of Nevers. We aren’t in-between anything. With every boat, a new islander arrives and an old one leaves. They are never coming back. That’s how 58 million dollars in overrides pass along with our new topless beaches. Even before that ordinance passed, I liked to spend time at the beach. As I have gotten older, I spend more time sitting at Cisco. My Boon Companion likes to chase seagulls, catch blowing water bottles, and make friends with two- and four-footed visitors. He doesn’t do any harm. The beach is never the same, day to day, evening to evening. The break moves or the sand sometimes drops in a cliff or there are no waves at all, just a few bored seals commuting back to Muskeget. I never feel as if I am in-between anything by the shore. Those high school seniors have been out as well. Their white jeep comes bumping up the washboards with songs and laughter, then comes to a riotous stop at the edge of the cliff. They have the stickers, they have the dents, and they have this time in the curl of the wave, when they can all be together in this dank, oceanic moment in-between goals, dreams, and laundry.

open can take about 45 minutes, but it can take days to close. You might find earthstars lying loose on the surface, but they grow up from below, where the main part of the fungus lives year-round. Like many fungi, the part we see, the earthstar, is actually what is called the “fruiting body.” Earthstars are ectomycorrhizal fungi, meaning the “body” of the fungi lives in the soil. The body of the earthstar fungi is its mycelium, the underground complex of fibrous, branching hyphae. The earthstar fruiting body is how the fungi reproduces. When ready to reproduce, the mycelium develops the “earthstar” above ground. The ball-looking part is actually a spore sac. When immature, the spore sac is solid inside, but as it matures the inside changes into a mass of powdery spores. When raindrops hit the ripe spore sac, the spores puff out from a pore at the top of the sac. You can see the tiny hole at the top of the puffball portion of the earthstar where the spores will release. When a Barometer Earthstar opens, its rays can push the fruiting body a centimeter or two above the ground like an octopus stretching its legs on the ground, increasing their spores' chances of being scattered further. Above ground, the earthstars become detached, and wind or rain can move them, all the better to spread spores. Underground, the fungus forms relationships with plant roots, and both fungus and plants benefit. Like many fungi, the earthstars have strong positive associations with many woodland species, pines and oaks especially for the Barometer Earthstar – both trees plentiful on Nantucket. The mutualistic association between tree roots and the mycelium of the fungus helps the trees extract nutrients (particularly phosphorus) from the soil; in exchange, the fungus receives carbohydrates from photosynthesis. The Barometer Earthstar prefers loamy or sandy, nutrient-poor soil, such as what we primarily have on Nantucket. It often grows in open spaces, usually in clusters or groups, making it an ideal candidate to discover on a nature walk. On-island, I have found these little treasures in multiple locations: along Linda Loring Nature Foundation trails, Surfside dune swales, Head of the Plains near pitch pine stands, in various parts of the Middle Moors, and at Camp continued on page 21

Richards Scout Camp. Look along the edges of sandy trails, particularly after a heavy fog or rain. The loose earthstars (after opening and detaching) can persist for years. So even after they first appear, loose earthstars can be found at any time of year. When dry, the arms of the “star” curl up. If you put your dried earthstar in a little water, the rays open up again— a magic trick of nature! While this Nantucket native is a superstar to us, the Barometer Earthstar is actually cosmopolitan. That is, our earthstar can also be found in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and even Australia.
