by Tim Ehrenberg Marketing Director for Nantucket Book Partners, Nantucket Book Festival, and creator of Tim Talks Books It’s not a Nantucket summer until the “Queen of the Beach Reads,” Elin Hilderbrand gets us a new book in our beach bags. Golden Girl release date is June 1, and this novel tells the story of Vivian Howe, author of thirteen beach novels and mother of three nearly grown children, who is killed in a hit-and-run car accident while jogging near her home on Nantucket. She ascends to the Beyond where she's assigned to a Person named Martha , who allows Vivi to watch what happens below for one last summer. Vivi also is granted three “nudges” to change the outcome of events on earth, and with her daughter Willa on her third miscarriage, Carson partying until all hours, and Leo currently “off again” with his highmaintenance girlfriend, she’ll have to think carefully where to use them. From the Beyond, Vivi watches “The Chief” Ed Kapenash investigate her death, but her greatest worry is her final book, which contains a secret from her own youth that could be disastrous for her reputation. But when hidden truths come to light, Vivi’s family will have to sort out their past and present mistakes— with or without a nudge of help from above—while Vivi finally lets them grow without her. With all of Elin’s trademark beach scenes, mouth-watering meals, and picture-perfect homes, plus a heartfelt message—the people we lose never really leave us—Golden Girl is “a beach book unlike any other.” Early praise for the book has been stellar with Kirkus Reviews giving it a “starred review,” and proclaiming, “If novelists are auditioning to play God, Hilderbrand gets the part.” Elin has been signing and staff at Mitchell’s Book Corner have been packing up thousands of pre-ordered copies of the book to be sent around the world to continued on page 14

AAN’s Plein Air Festival Continues

The Artists Association of Nantucket’s Plein Air Nantucket Festival, founded by AAN artistic director Robert Frazier, has shifted for 2021 to a six-week festival. The event began on May 11 and will continue through Wednesday, June 16. Open is open to all painters at any skill level, the festival features artists painting out and about on the island while enjoying socially-distant painting sessions with fellow artists. Their new wet works can be viewed in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street, starting on May 28. A huge proponent of en plein air painting, Frank Swift Chase taught outdoor classes on Nantucket Island from 1920 through the early 1950s. The core of his regular students became the founders of the AAN. In this spirit, the Artists Association hosts Plein Air Nantucket annually and presents the Frank Swift Chase awards: juried prizes given to artists who participate in the festival. This year the annual Paint Out at Brant Point will take place for two days, Wednesday and Thursday, June 9 and 10, starting at 10 am with a rain date of the 11. Artists will be painting in a socially distanced way, and the public is invited to watch them from a safe distance. A list Plein Air locations is available at the AAN website: NantucketArts.org. Unlike in previous years, artists interested in participating in Plein Air Nantucket are not required to sign up nor will they have to get their canvases stamped. There is no entry fee; however artworks eligible to be considered for an Chase Award must measure 16” x 20” or smaller. There is no designated painting area, although all artists should be respectful of signage and not violate private property restrictions. The majority of the work should be painted on location and brought to the gallery upon completion. The Frank Swift Chase Awards will be posted in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery on June 16, and Plein Air works will be on display in the gallery through June 28. The Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, located at 19 Washington Street, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm, with hours extended as the season progresses.

We Are Born Lucky

Sail Endeavor

by Robert P. Barsanti My boon companion and I make a habit of walking Sanford Farm out to the barn, at which point, I sit down and he surveys the scents and smells. In the “R” months, he is able to travel around unabated; those who come walking by are familiar with an unleashed dog, or, at least, they are familiar with this unleashed dog. He tolerates a scratch on the head, or if he is in the mood for something more intimate, the travelers can scratch him on the hindquarters or on the belly. As they leave, his eyes follow them. Then, like a philandering husband, he returns to his longtime partner; he knows where the treats are. I was born lucky. While he surveys and suffers, I sit before the scrub oak slowly filling in to Hummock Pond, Cisco, and the rolling South Shore. Today, in the clear northern air, the remnants of an ocean storm have sent battalions of waves to batter the sand. A mist rolls up off of the waves and creeps up the beach. Along Hummock Pond, three new roofs have appeared, with men suited up and firing nail guns. The distant thump of each fastener muttered in the air up to the barn. There’s a lot of work around. Work, it seems, walks in singly or it marches in legions. We spend months stringing out one job to the other, listening to the phone ring and then, in the matter of months and two balance statements, you are sending promising offers to another builder you met over coffee. And there they are, all of those paychecks, on the roofs of houses, pounding the shingles. We are born lucky. Like everyone else, I have a preference for the old views. Sitting here, with a resting doggo, the southern expanse has not changed much, although a few houses on the way to Cisco have become subdivisions. Anderson, Menges, Congdon, and Silva gave us this; otherwise a bright double yellow line would wind down this path leading to gated communities. But we don’t live in a fixed point in time, though many may wish it. The only thing constant in the world is change, and it arrives on every boat. Still, my old eyes see Old South Road and a Real Estate Rapture on its way. Of all of the money that is landing on the island, most of it comes from the world of equity and Real Estate Investment Trusts, not from long time vacationers who decided to buy that darling little cottage in Wauwinet. The investment folks see a place for a beachhead, then an invasion, and then rent piling up in a column. In continued on page 13

April showers bring May flowers and hopefully those flowers are bringing in the pollinators! As the weather warms and the skies clear, Nantucketers are feeling like spring is truly in the air (finally!). Many of us are cleaning up our gardens planning and planting for the season ahead. There is planting for food (think vegetable and herb gardens), planting for birds (sunflowers for example), and planting a multicolored flower garden. But the most important of all is planting for native pollinators. Pollinators provide a vital service helping plants reproduce and increasing genetic diversity. Without pollinators, the food we eat and many of the plants we enjoy would not exist. Native bees in particular, pollinate native plants like cherries, blueberries, and cranberries, and were here long before European honeybees were brought to North America. Native bees are estimated to pollinate 80 percent of flowering plants around the world! Bees feed on both nectar and pollen: the nectar is for energy and the pollen provides protein and other nutrients. Most pollen is used by bees as larvae food, but bees also transfer it from plant to plant, providing the pollination services needed by plants and nature as a whole. And we aren’t talking about honeybees here. While important for agriculture, honeybees, as a nonnative species, can destabilize natural ecosystems by competing with native bees. There are about 5,000 native bee species in North America. Some are thriving, but many are becoming rare. Insects on the whole have been in major decline in decent decades due to increasing threats of habitat loss, non-native species, climate change, and increase in agricultural practices and insecticide use. Native pollinators and bees in particular are under threat due to similar factors as well as competition and disease from non-native honeybees. Native bees also play an important role in food production, contributing at least $3 billion annually to agriculture in the USA. Wild bees have a unique way of extracting pollen called “buzz pollination,” which is when they shake flowers at a certain frequency in which more pollen is released. Honey bees can’t do this. A honeybee would have to visit a blueberry flower four times to deposit the same amount of pollen as a single bumble bee. An important part of conservation on Nantucket is protecting the pollinators that our native plants depend on. So what are we doing about it? Both the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF) and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF) are part of a regional project investigating native bee pollinators in grassland habitats. The objective of the Xeric Grassland, Barren, and Woodland Pollinator Conservation Project is to improve the ability of Northeast states to implement cost-effective habitat management for the benefit of native pollinators. In its fourth year (out of five), the project has thus far demonstrated that Nantucket, in particular Head of the Plains where NCF is sampling, has some of the highest native bee diversity. Grasslands up and down the East Coast, including our own sandplain grasslands, offer unique assemblages of plants and likely pollinators. As these habi-

tats are lost to development, succession, and non-native species, pollinators lose important nectar sources and breeding areas. This is an important opportunity for our local groups to participate in a region-wide study and learn more about our own native pollinators. In addition to this important conservation research, Nantucket is looking at ways homeowners can contribute to supporting native pollinators. The Nantucket Land Council (NLC) has launched a Planting for Pollinators program this year to help homeowners plan some garden space with pollinators in mind. Turning your yard into a pollinator-friendly ecosystem will help you and all of Nantucket! How to get involved? Visit the NLC planting for pollinators page as a start for resources and information. If you sign up (for free) to participate in the 2021 program, the NLC will send you a “do-it-yourself guide” to planning, prepping, and planting your garden space. As part of the program, you will receive monthly emails with updates and tips to help guide you through the season. Plant suggestions in the guide are available on-island. These suggested species are mostly native and are definitely not invasive. They also require less water and fertilizer than most commercially available garden plants leading to overall improved water quality and sustainability. And don’t worry if you’re concerned about attracting bees to your yard. Very few native bees sting – truly! As a novice gardener, I’m using the guide to assist in adding a new bed in my own yard. The guide helps with site selection based on sunlight availability in your yard, soil, and location. The plant lists are Nantucket-specific and include suggestions for combating herbivory from deer and rabbits. It also includes soil prep and tips for successful establishment. I especially appreciate the on-going maintenance guidance to ensure success through the growing season and into early autumn. The goal of the project, according to Executive Director Emily Molden, is to “build a network of pollinator habitat and beautiful natural spaces across Nantucket in our own backyards.” By helping our native pollinators, we’re helping our whole community thrive. What else can you do to help native pollinators? • Plant native species. • Lay off the pesticides. Most sprays are non-specific, so if you try and kill one thing, you could actually be killing bees and butterflies as well. • Provide a diversity of pollinator-friendly plants with various bloom times to ensure availability throughout the growing season. • Provide water sources. During the hot, dry summer, even small pollinators could use some water. • Don’t clean up every area of your garden. Fallen plant material and twigs can provide important habitat and breeding areas. Leave at least a small portion of your yard with some debris. • Support your local conservation organization! These groups, like LLNF, NLC, and NCF, do a lot to support native pollinators and manage important habitat.

Lights. Cameras. Advocacy. Lunafest Returns May 29

LUNAFEST, the national traveling film festival presented by nutrition bar company LUNA, showcases films by, for, and about women. The Theatre Workshop of Nantucket first brought Lunafest to the island in 2010: the festival is now a signature event of NCTV18, Nantucket’s Media Arts Center. LUNAFEST 2021 will be a hybrid event held on Saturday, May 29, at 6:30 pm. Guests can attend virtually, screening films from home, or join a socially distanced in-person event hosted by the Dreamland. Virtual and in-person attendees, along with the general public, may bid on silent online auction items to benefit NCTV. Enticing auction items include travel packages with 2-year extensions, art and jewelry from local makers, limited edition, signed movie and music collectibles, and sumptuous offerings from the island’s top restaurants. Bidding began May 17 continues until midnight on May 31. Winning bidders will be notified by phone. Well-known island resident, actor, writer, and director John Shea is thrilled to be part of welcoming LUNAFEST back to Nantucket. Shea is co-hosting the May 29th event with Joyce Pedretti, Executive Vice President and Senior Creative Director at BBDO. Shea has a long history with LUNAFEST during his involvement with the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket. Tickets are $25 to attend either virtually or in person. Tickets to the Virtual event are available now at nctv18.org and at nantucketdreamland.org. Funds raised support the LUNAFEST mission and the upcoming construction of "Studio A," NCTV's new broadcast studio and expansion of the NCTV education center. With the addition of Studio A, NCTV will have the ability to air live, highquality programming right from the studio, and give NCTV members the opportunity to create their own shows in a professional studio. It will enable NCTV to connect visiting journalists, academics, and media professionals seamlessly with national and international networks for live interview segments. Funds raised will also help NCTV to expand its current education center, update equipment and software, and create smaller studio spaces to accommodate member projects, specialized training, and individual production work.

Annual Dreamcatcher Auction Opens May 27

From a grassroots effort by parishioners of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in 1980 to start a local hospice organization, Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON) has grown to offer physical, emotional, and spiritual services to Nantucket patients and their families. On Saturday, June 5 from 7 to 8 pm, PASCON will host their 28th annual Dreamcatcher Dinner and Auction virtually as an old-fashioned telethon aired on NCTV Channel 18 and on the NCTV18 Youtube channel. The hour-long telethon will include musical performances by the Merrick Brannigan, Donald Dallaire, Nantucket Cobbletones, Skyler Wright, and Gabe Zinser. There will be moving tributes and testimonials from Patty Dargie, Jeanne Geddes, Rufus Gifford, Cary Hazlegrove, and others. Kirk Baker and Jenny Benzie of Epernay will offer a cocktail demonstration for their Dreamcatcher Daiquiri. Sunset Tributes are still at the heart of the annual Dreamcatcher Dinner and Auction: reach out to PASCON by May 30 to dedicate a sunset, and your dedication will be listed on screen during the June 5 program. The Dreamcatcher Auction is PASCON's primary fundraiser and features items, packages, experiences, gift certificates, and more from 100 donors. We Are Born Lucky from page 5

that time, the just and familiar will be removed to Rockland, Maine with a check and photo album, while the island waits for the blood-dimmed tide and the hoofbeats of the horsemen. Too long waiting on the road has made me cranky. Those new eyes see the same thing our old eyes see, they just see it for the first time. During this time of year, most of what I see of the island is over a steering wheel, through a pile of receipts, invoices, and napkins on the dashboard, the back doors of Mac Davis Flooring. But for those new eyes, the island appears natural, controlled, and peaceful. And, sitting here, watching the red wing blackbirds dip and dive among the brush, the new eyes run past us and disappear without so much as a scratch for the Very Good Doggo. My only wish is probably the same thing that Messrs. Anderson, Silva, etc wished: if you like what you see, let’s keep it that way. We are all lucky. On Memorial Day, I have to be aware of older eyes than mine. What would a man think, when after seeing war in France, in Belgium, in Vietnam, in Afghanistan, he sat here among the swallows and the grackles and watched the surf break miles away. Five centuries have passed since young men died in battle on this sand and the war cries have faded. Still, I think of Buddy Blair, who landed in France on the Longest Day, and wonder what must have gone through his mind as he saw the surf break on a long stretch of beach. Unbidden, the moments must have slipped over each other. The ocean remains the ocean, the beach remains the beach—always changing and always the same. To him, the guns must have still echoed, even here. One moment the waves roll with the dead, in the next, they carry the boogie boards. We are born lucky. We don’t deserve this beach, nor do we merit this view, nor did we warrant the murmuration of the sparrows. They were given to us, unasked and unrequited, by those who came before us. Other people died, other country’s sacrificed, other lands were marred. We just got lucky. We are alive in a time when my boys are not being sent off to hold the end of the spear. We are alive in a time when only our familiar flag flies over the cobblestones. We are alive at a time when Granddad’s fishing shack will pay the grandchildren millions, will pay the carpenters thousands, and will pay the new owners in crusty towels, salt hair, and sand in the bathtub. The trick, I told my boon companion, as he stared at a slice of American cheese, is to be grateful for an unjust, undeserved, and, irreplaceable gift of today. And then, to pass that fragile gift of today through to tomorrow.

I was able to ask Elin some questions during all this time together signing books. Who inspired the writing of Golden Girl? Golden Girl was inspired by four people. The first is my father, Robert Hilderbrand, who was killed in a plane crash when I was sixteen. I spent a good part of my young adulthood grappling with my grief over this loss. But after I gave birth to my first child, Maxwell, in 1999, I understood that a parent's love for a child never dies. And in the ensuing years, I became increasingly convinced that my dad was watching me from above. Then, in 2014, while I was battling breast cancer, I had a life-threatening complication that led me to be medevacked from Nantucket Cottage Hospital to the Boston Medical Center. The nurse suggested I say goodbye to my kids before I left, so I had a friend pluck them out of school and bring them to NCH. I said to them, I don't know what's going to happen right now, but I can tell you this: I will never leave you. Even if I don't survive this, I will always be watching you. The good news is, I survived. The power of that moment has remained with me, however, and it led me to this book. The book is dedicated to your children Max, Dawson, and Shelby. Give me one sentence you would say to each of them if that was your last sentence. I will never leave you. Also: Please be vigilant about trash and recycling. Vivian Howe, the main character, sounds a lot like you. What's the fact vs fiction? continued on page 15

Vivi has some of my qualities and quirks. She lives in a Money Pit. She has three kids, young adults, which she finds challenging, but she's beginning to get to the point where she can be friends with her kids. She runs every day. She finds the publishing world challenging. She writes about flawed characters with love. All of these things are very Elin. (She also makes some of my recipes.) The rest is fiction.

with that. Is there something that has happened in your life that you think was a nudge from above? Too many times to count, I have been yanked out of harm's way. Someone is up above keeping me safe.

ALL OF YOUR FAVORITES, FROM SEAFOOD TO TACOS & NACHOS...SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

If the main character dies right away, is Golden Girl a sad book? I think Golden Girl is my funniest, most hopeful, and, ultimately, most joyful book.

Every single thing I do is an attempt to make sure I honor the memory of my dad. He died at 41—and I know he must be frustrated about this (much the way Vivi is: way too soon!)—so I always try to "go for it" on his behalf.

What would you want to be remembered for? My generous, open, and tolerant heart...the way I love just about everybody. I do not want to remembered for my temper. It can be really bad.

Ok, this all sounds like the most depressing book, but honestly it is funny and hopeful. Without giving anything away, what was your favorite scene to write? My favorite scenes are A) the scenes up in the Beyond with Martha and Vivi. And B) the scenes at the fictional

I love this idea of "the nudges" Vivian gets because how often are we thinking someone we lost just helped

Oystercatcher restaurant (based on Sandbar) with Vivi's "bad child," Carson. It's always the most fun to write about the bad characters! What Festival or Nantucket event did you miss the most this past year? I missed Wine Festival and I missed the Pops. I did not miss Figawi nor Stroll (this might be a scandalous opinion, I'm sorry!) What's your perfect Nantucket day? Run, Peloton, barre class at Forme on Amelia Drive, beach out at Ram's Head with a krabby patty from the Surfside Shack, outdoor shower, Cisco brewery, dinner at the Pearl or Nautilus, singing at the Club Car piano or dancing front row at the Chicken Box. I don't usually get to do all this in a day, but I aspire! Have you learned anything profound from this pandemic? The pandemic has taught me—taught us all—not to take any of our freedoms for granted. I had Covid for 18 miserable days, and while I was sick I kept reminding myself to remember how bad I felt so that I would feel grateful once I got better. Elin’s favorite read of the year so far: Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead TV show she is loving right now: Pen15 and Ted Lasso. MUST watch!! What's your favorite fan story? Back in 2014, I did a last-minute signing at Warwick's in La Jolla. I was with my kids on vacation. Only about 25 people showed up, but I was thrilled—and one woman informed me that she had taken off work and DRIVEN FROM ARIZONA in order to be there. Her name is Jessica Jackson, we are now friends and she has come to the EH Bucket List weekend multiple times. I also really love the story of a woman in St. Louis whose son drove her five hours each way to meet me on her birthday. These are the kinds of stories that make Elin Hilderbrand readers the best in all of publishing. What's the next Elin book in 2022 about? It's called The Hotel Nantucket, which is loosely based on the Nantucket Hotel. Only The Hotel Nantucket is haunted by a ghost named Grace who died in a fire in the hotel in 1922. It's staffed by a diverse, inclusive and incredibly attractive staff and the novel rolls us through the summer season, focusing on both the staff and the guests, as Grace watches from her spot in the rafters!
