Still the island’s largest selection of sunglasses Some are plain, beautiful in their simplicity and deeply colored by age. Others are elaborately constructed and adorned with carvings of ivory and ebony, scrimshaw, gold, and gems. They are round, oval, square, and even heart-shaped. Many are made to be totes and purses, with others designed as wine coasters, bread baskets, vases, mirror frames, ornaments, and even cradles. An affiliation between the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum (NLBM) and the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) has brought a superb display of Nantucket lightship baskets to upper Main Street in a new exhibit on the second floor continued on page 15

“Respoke began as a love affair. Nothing scandalous or naughty, just a simple love affair with a shoe which, like so many things Spanish, seemed a perfect marriage of style and function, the espadrille,“ explained founder and best-selling author Michael Tonello. Respoke, newly opened at 41 Straight Wharf, is a shopping experience offering iconic designer silk repurposed into a curated collection of one-of-a-kind products featuring hand-crafted Spanish made espadrilles. Tonello’s memoir, Bringing Home the Birkin, recounts the highlights of his years as a reseller of all things Hermès. His love affair with espadrilles began shortly after he settled in Barcelona and it didn’t take long for him to reimagine his favorite new footwear crafted with luxurious silk rather than utilitarian cotton twill. Join Respoke this season for a fresh new perspective on footwear, ready to wear, and accessories at 41 Straight Wharf or online at respoke.com

Book Fest Authors Celebrate Juneteenth
The Nantucket Book Foundation, on the weekend it would traditionally hold its festival, will present a live virtual event celebrating Juneteenth and speaking to issues of race in America. On Thursday, June 17 at 7 pm, this live virtual event will feature a panel of four authors who are educators, historians, and artists— Dr. Keisha N. Blain, Imani Perry, Deesha Philyaw, and Clint Smith—hosted by writer and author Mitchell S. Jackson. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure all enslaved people were freed—two-and-a-half years behind the rest of the nation in enforcing Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day of remembering, a moment to take stock of America’s history of centuries of slavery, the reverberations of which shake our nation still. Juneteenth is a time of celebration, a marking of freedom and emancipation: a tradition that celebrates the resilience, strength, courage and determination of the indomitable human spirit to survive. During a year in which issues of racial justice, equity, and diversity have risen to center stage, this powerhouse panel will help viewers listen and learn so our past will inform our future. Join the Nantucket Book Festival for this dynamic, enlivening, powerful conversation that seeks to amplify voices that speak to these issues of race in America, and how Juneteenth might magnify concerns—and hopes—for the country. To participate, register at nantucketbookfestival.org/events. A link to the online program will be sent to registrants the day before the event. The Nantucket Book Festival operates under the Nantucket Book Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded to celebrate and promote the joys and rewards of reading and writing. The organization seeks to present an annual quality program that honors national, regional and local authors and the rich culture of the written word. Working together with island educators, The Nantucket Book Foundationbrings its Visiting Author program into island schools and holds an annual Young Writers Award essay competition for high school students. These programs encourage students to find a platform of words and a love of reading to understand that while they may live on an island, there is no limit to imagination.

Stop the Spread... Toggery Shop Invasive Scotch Broom Murray’s More than the Home of the Original Nantucket Reds TM
by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois
Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation It’s that time of year again when a swath of bright yellow blooms can be seen across the island on bike paths, road edges, and conservation land trails. The non-native invasive Scotch Broom is loved by many, but is a nuisance to others. We are now finding it is becoming more invasive over time, particularly with climate change. I first wrote about Scotch Broom in 2018 as an introduction to the idea of this plant being considered more invasive. At the time, we in the conservation world on-island had been seeing this plant showing more and more invasive tendencies. I had hoped to raise awareness about this plant and open people’s eyes to the possibility that this beautiful landscape plant could be more trouble than it’s worth. In the years since, I developed a research project around Scotch Broom to see if what we were seeing anecdotally was really something more: let the data speak for itself. In late 2019, the New England Botanical Society (formerly New England Botanical Club) awarded me a research grant (the Les Mehrhoff Botanical Research Award) to study Scotch Broom on Nantucket, collecting data throughout the island documenting invasiveness. Throughout 2020 and with the help of several volunteers, we are close to completing our surveys and welcome any reports from the community. Scotch Broom was first planted on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard in the late 1800s for a combination of its appearance and its dune stabilizing capabilities. It is well-adapted to dry, sandy soils and grows well in full sunlight: ideal conditions for Nantucket. Scotch Broom inhabits maritime to sub-maritime cool mesothermal climates. It thrives in coastal areas due, in part, to mild winter temperatures that allow it to photosynthesize and fix nitrogen into the winter (it’s partially evergreen). Hiscontinued on page 18

My mother wanted to go to Disney World. For most of my young life, she had expressed this wish, although in her own Irish tongue and manner. My father was a skier and felt that any trip in February had best be about snow and chairlifts, not sand and roller coasters. As a result, our vacations tended to involve heading north instead of heading south. Even after her sister took my cousins to Disney World three times—a normal, middle class rite of passage—my father would not relent. When my mother finally arranged the Disney trip, she got sick. Afterwards, my father couldn’t bear to go by himself. For many, Nantucket is that DisneyWorld. By that, I don’t mean the “I bought this pass” entitlement that drives the wrong way down Main Street, but, instead, the promise of mouse ears on the calendar and the hope for a moment in the sun when the kids are smiling, the lines are short, and Cinderella has something special for you. In the second (or third) spike for the pandemic, Mom and Dad pointed to this weekend, called up a hotel, and imagined the day on-island. They asked their friends who had been here, they read the articles, and they Yelped. As the kids struggled through online school, as Zoom and Meet clogged up the house internet, and as they wiped down their groceries, That Long Weekend on Nantucket hung out in the future, like the moon in the evening. Then, as the social distance shrunk, the masks slipped, and the vaccination rate climbed, the weekend slipped over the horizon, came into the harbor, then pulled into the slip.
They packed their swimsuits. And on that prayed, promised, and paid-for weekend, the wind turned, the thermometer hit 44 degrees, and the rain dropped in clouds. I saw the family downtown at a dive shop/toy store/hat rack. The three little girls had matching pink raincoats decorated with frogs, Mom was in a polar fleece, and Dad wore shorts and loafers. They were shopping for Legos. I did not catch Dad’s eye, because I have been there. I have been looking at a weather report with pointless hope, I have put a brave face on a tough day, and I have taken everyone for a wet drive to look at the waves. I have answered the question “How much are we paying for this?” Be strong, Brother. Be strong. You came here. Some people never make it to Disney World. Empathy is hard. As Americans, we tend to look at the world from inside the locked metal bubble of a speeding car, with the air conditioning on and the Rolling Stones rocking. In our old normal, the rest of the world flashes past our windshield and into the rear view mirror at about 80 miles an hour. Empathy is not our strong suit as a nation; nor are we, as an island, any more caring about the people on their white bikes trying to find their way to Cisco. The pandemic brought out the best and worst of us. In the best, we thought about others, socially distanced, wore a mask, and took sensible precautions. At the worst, all of our tendencies to roll up the windows continued on page 10

and crank the volume were smiled at and encouraged. If you are lucky enough to have enough money and career to spend the year indoors, without the personal vampires popping up in your shadows, the pandemic was an annoyance, aggravation, and streaming marathon. But 40 percent of Americans reported problems with mental health or drug use over the last year. More heroin overdoses, more suicides, more abuse, more battery, more of all of the vampires that rise when the doors close, the shades fall, and the shadows grow. We have learned in the grinding wheel of island history that those particular vampires flourish in our foggy darkness. On this cold and damp Memorial Day, we slipped into our new normal. The unmasked lined up on Daves Street, they sat down to Lobster Thermidor, and they walked with their kids to get brownie ice cream downtown. But the new normal is a cracked plate; it will break at a glance. It needs to be kept, protected, placed, and watched with a kind eye. It has seen some stuff. When the sun returns with the stripers and the bluefish, the island will appear normal again. The lilacs will have bloomed, the trees will have become a deep green, and the bicyclists will ignore the bike lanes. Everything outside my car looks as it always looks in May, save for the Figawis and their tent. But the island isn’t the same. Nor are its residents, nor its workers, nor its visitors. To expect everyone to rewind to 2019 and fire up the barbecue and fireworks is to miss the fundamental grief and damage that has been done to everyone. Everyone has had moments of fear, panic, and grief. Everyone has seen their luck tested. Everyone has had to hang on for a moment, look out the window, and wonder what was really going to happen after all. Everyone hurts. So, when I go to the grocery store now and still see masks on faces, I figure they have had to weep in the dark. They had to hold their breath. They had to hold the vampires at bay, as best they could, with whatever they could, as long as they could. We are an island preyed on by loneliness, depression, and heroin. It isn’t Disney World. Nor has it been for our visitors. They have come here with the hope of sun, smiles, and selfies. They left a winter of gray grappling with their own vampires in order to come here, breathe deep, and settle in. Like many other dreams, this one fell apart in the rain. And, while they are looking at the gloom from a familiar porthole on Broad Street, my heart will go out to them.

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

of the NHA’s Hadwen House. There is much excitement about the possibilities presented by this joint effort and how it may best benefit our island community. Lightship baskets are “a treasured craft, uniquely Nantucket, that is still practiced today – a living breathing art and craft – that needs to be nurtured and cherished,” commented Chip Carver, NHA Board President.

Daryl Westbrook, past NLBM president and long-time board member and volunteer, enthusiastically agrees. She is thrilled about the affiliation and the potential for sharing the history and beauty of lightship baskets with more visitors. “Our building was way too small: we couldn’t accommodate the number of people who wanted to attend… the NHA is a gateway for education and the traditions of Nantucket.” This year’s exhibit at Hadwen House was curated by Kathleen Myers and includes 100 baskets from the NLBM. Myers has expertly arranged the collection continued on page 16

in five different areas to showcase “two decades of the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum plus some new items.” There are displays of miniatures, unusual baskets, historic baskets, a basket woven in space by Astronaut Daniel Bursch, baskets made by children who took classes at NLBM, and some spectacular “nests” by modern makers Nap Plank, Karol Lindquist, and Michael Kane. An actual Nantucket lightship basket workroom is also part of the exhibit. “We very much believe this is a continuing craft,” Myers explained. In addition to the main exhibit at Hadwen House, displays of lightship baskets and their history can also be viewed in the Decorative Arts Gallery at the Whaling Museum, along with the workshop of well-known and beloved basketmaker José Formoso Reyes. Reyes resided on Nantucket from 1947, learned to make Nantucket lightship baskets from island craftsman Mitchell Ray, and is credited with developing the “friendship basket” pocketbook as well as many innovative styles and designs. We talked to James Russell right after the announcement of the affiliation, and he told us that “This affiliation started with conversations between Ari Kopelman & Daryl Westbrook, and the idea of working together came up. Ari suggested that Daryl call the NHA executive director. She did, and the idea quickly gathered steam,” explained Russell. “Daryl displayed enormous courage in doing this. Her foresight is to be commended: she is the hero in all this—she was visionary.” “The NLBM directors voted to come to us from a position of strength,” added NHA Interim Director Johanna Richard. “No debt, a collection that complements our collection. They could have gone on alone, no doubt about it… but from the point of view of serving the public and honoring the craft that they so treasure it was better to come together under one roof.” “This is pure joy! It is exciting…we are thrilled,” added Susan Blount, NHA Vice President and NHA Board liaison on the transaction. “We want all the passion and energy of the NLBM staff and board brought into the NHA.” “Long term plan with NLBM is for the museum to have a Nantucket Lightship continued on page 17

Vol. 51 No. 3 • YesterdaysIsland.com Basket Museum Gallery within the Broad Street Campus,” Carver explained. This new gallery is to be dedicated to Nantucket crafts and will place the lightship basket story in the heart of the NHA’s primary facility. With education and scholarship being key tenants of both the NHA and NLBM, basketmaking will be integrated into the NHA’s year-round offerings of craft classes for children, youth, and adults. These missions will be manifested in scholarship, publications, oral histories, and in-person and virtual programming. It is anticipated that the combined lightship basket collection will grow, with the clear goal of building comprehensive and world-class combined holdings. These two treasured Nantucket organizations are weaving a new chapter in the story of Nantucket lightship baskets.
The Hadwen House, 96 Main Street, is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm, through mid-October. The Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street, is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission to both is $23; $20 for students & seniors; and $5 for ages 6 to 17.

Invasive Scotch Broom from page 7
torically, Scotch Broom does not do well in areas with very cold winters. Seedlings and young plants are especially sensitive to frost, while mature plants are known to tolerate fairly severe frosts. This is likely why Scotch Broom has not spread across New England despite being naturalized in our area for more than a century. Scotch Broom is considered by some to be an invasive plant in the northeast. However, it has not been included as an “invasive plant” under the Massachusetts state list of invasive species. In 2005, the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group (MIPAG) previously evaluated Scotch Broom but did not add it to the list because, “Current evidence does not show that it is spreading rapidly from cultivation and out-competing native species in Massachusetts.” However, this was 16 years ago, and many things have changed. There is now growing interest in whether or not this species should be added to state banned list. On Nantucket, we are starting to see an increase in Scotch Broom populations in natural areas, along roadsides, and bike paths. Before this plant can be considered for listing as part of the Nantucket Invasive Plant Species list or the MIPAG list, we first need to know the extent of the problem on-island. Our project involves documenting occurrences of Scotch Broom across Nantucket, focusing on conservation lands, minimally managed habitats, and other publicly accessible areas like roadsides, bike paths, and open space. This does not include private homes and areas where people are actively landscaping Scotch Broom plants. In the past year, with the help of some excellent volunteers, we have surveyed approximately 70% of the island: the rest is being surveyed now, at peak bloom time. We have documented more than 400 individual plants outside of cultivation. That includes plants that are reproductive as well as seedlings. Of those occurrences, 74% of them occur on conserved and other open space land: minimally managed habitats. The rest are found in developed habitats. Several populations are located in areas where they could impact rare plant species. Also of concern for dispersing out of cultivation is the spread of seeds. Scotch Broom has a ballistic seed dispersal mechanism: the mature seed pods spring open, vaulting a decent distance from the adult plant. What about all of those plants that have been here for decades? In addition

to documenting what is present on Nantucket, we have been able to document changes to the naturalized populations. Nantucket is now approximately 2°C warmer than previous long-term averages. With warmer winters and earlier spring temperatures, global climate change may help Scotch Broom persist and spread on the landscape. Species like this are often called “sleeper species” – those that have been on the landscape for some time, but only becoming more invasive and escaping cultivation when conditions, such as climate, change. Others in Massachusetts include English Ivy, Kudzu, and Sweet Autumn Clematis. This growing season, we are finalizing our initial surveys of Scotch Broom, focusing on the lesser surveyed areas of the island. Feel free to send me a message if you would like to help! As the plants mature, I will also be collecting seed pods to investigate seed viability of our local populations. Scotch Broom is a great species for research on Nantucket, since we want to learn more about this species that has flown under the radar for so long. We hope that by documenting Scotch Broom occurrences, we can demonstrate, to MIPAG, the invasive tendencies of Scotch Broom, its reproductive potential, and its potential impact on the surrounding landscape. Listing as invasive at the state level would help on Nantucket prevent further planting. It would also help us in our education of the community to remove or otherwise manage Scotch Broom populations. How can you contribute to Scotch Broom research and management? • If you’d like to volunteer to collect data, contact Dr. Sarah Bois at stbois@llnf.org. • See an occurrence? Take photos of the plant, any reproductive evidence, and habitat. Send these to Sarah Bois: stbois@llnf.org • Stop the spread – don’t plant any new Scotch Broom and be sure to manage any you ma already have in your landscaping. Or remove it! photo by Dr. Sarah T. Bois
