Science Showcase for Nantucket by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois
Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation
For many people on Nantucket—visitors and year-rounders—when asked why they love the island, they answer by talking about the natural beauty, open spaces, and bountiful moorlands. The historic charm of our downtown may be enough for some, but it’s escaping the hustle and bustle of town and getting into the open conservation lands that really enchants people. We are fortunate on Nantucket to have more than half of the island preserved as open space, with multiple organizations serving as stewards of these lands. Each organization has its own unique mission and activities supporting that mission. In an effort to bring like organizations together to share their work and also to collaborate on island-wide projects, the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative was created in 2003. As its mission states, the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (NBI) seeks to “conserve the native biodiversity of Nantucket, Tuckernuck, Muskeget and surrounding waters through collaborative research, monitoring, and education.” NBI is a collaboration of nonprofit organizations, academic institutions,

A Nantucket Tradition in Craft by Suzanne Daub
Judi Hill has a fine eye for art and an excellent sense of Nantucket history and design. In the G.S. Hill Gallery at 40 Straight Wharf, along with the original paintings and giclees by her husband and partner Greg Hill, Judi also has a beautiful selection of Nantucket Lightship baskets: traditional and historically significant baskets as well as new designs created by basketmakers weaving today. Judi works closely with the craftspeople she represents in her shop, often suggesting designs, and one she’s been partnering with for more than two decades is Maggie Silva. On a lark in 1984, Maggie Silva took a basketweaving class while working as an Early Childhood School Psychologist. Now, 40 years continued on page 15

Watch Art Made & Meet the Authors
Artistic endeavors are being celebrated across our island this June as two festivals overlap in dates: one festival honoring art and another that salutes those who write and those who love to read. The Artists Association of Nantucket’s Plein Air Festival begins on Tuesday, June 14 and continues through Sunday, June 19. The public is invited to watch the painters capture Nantucket on canvas all across Nantucket, at respectful distances, please. All painters are welcome to join in this festival featuring artists in the landscape. The “Wet Wall” will again be part of the Plein Air Festival, featuring art works posted in the AAN’s Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery downtown at 19 Washington Street immediately after completion every day for the public to view and to purchase. On Wednesday, June 15, from 9 am to 1 pm or so, a “Paint Out” will be held at Brant Point, during which spectators can watch as artists create. Plein Air culminates with the annual Frank Swift Chase Awards presentation on Sunday, June 19. A huge proponent of en plein air painting, Frank Swift Chase taught outdoor art classes on Nantucket starting in 1920 through the early 1950s, and the core of his regular students became the founders of the AAN. it is in this spirit that the AAN annually hosts Plein Air Nantucket. Celebrating its 10 anniversary year, the Nantucket Book Festival brings more than 30 writers to Nantucket from Friday, June 16 through Sunday, June 17 to meet readers, sign books, talk about their craft, answer questions, and offer readings. Presenting authors this year include Scott Turow, Imbolo Mbue, James McBride, Louise Penny, Nathaniel Philbrick, Alice Hoffman, Dave Barry, Nancy Thayer, and Mitchell Jackson. Nearly all of the more than two dozen festival events are free to attend and are being held in locations in the heart of town. There are three special events that require paid tickets, and they are selling fast! On Friday evening, June 17, continued on page 20

What’s New ON
NANTUCKET
A New Approach to Apparel At first, we weren’t entirely sure how to properly pronounce the name of the new shop at 18 Federal Street called Borobabi. But once we stepped inside and looked around, it became clear both how to pronounce their name (think Borrow Baby), and how it reflects their beautiful apparel and impressive mission. They sell children’s clothing sizes 0 to 6/7, along with some adult sizes for Mommy-and-Me outfits and a variety of toys made with natural materials. The color pallet is natural, and the styles are fun but without sparkles and iron-ons— instead of artificial decoration (much of which is made from toxic materials) Borobabi garments are adorned with pintucking, ruffles, and stylish patterns. Every item sold in Borobabi is non-toxic, organic, sustainable, and ethically produced: all clothing that you can feel good about putting on your little treasures! “I was inspired to start Borobabi when I had my daughter. Becoming a mother is a transformative experience: it makes you think of a future past your own life,” explained Founder and CEO Carolyn Butler. “One thing that struck me was the amount of clothes and toys that my daughter was cycling through so quickly.” Hence the concept of Circular Retailing: a model that involves using only materials that can be regenerated, keeping products in use, and eliminating waste. Their new store on Nantucket, which Butler calls a Discovery Shop, sells new products from more than twenty brand partners, all devoted to producing safe, soft, and stylish clothing for your family. And once your little one outgrows the Borobabi clothing, you can return it to Borobabi, whose team will clean it and resell it or rent it from their online shop at borobabi.com. “We view our Discovery Shops as starting the loop as people discover a new way of retailing.” Butler wants her customers to know there is a solution to all clutter of unused
clothes. “If you participate in circular retailing, you can have an impact, even as an individual!” Your children can be best dressed and help save the planet!
“Salt. Sand. Sea.” And Something New Next door to Borobabi is ACK 4170®—the shop is not new to Nantucket, but they are introducing so many new products for the 2022 season that we couldn’t resist mentioning them! From Nantucket chart handbags and wristlets, to lovely art trays and linens—Stop in, we will surprise you! Their new Nantucket Island Chart Handbags are handcrafted with nautical charts featuring our island and Nantucket Sound. The designer uses color pages from the New York Times on the sides, bottom, and interior, and finishes them off with fashionable tortoise handles. These handbags are definitely a conversation piece and already have proven to be a great seller (so don’t wait to get yours!) A wristlet version is also available. Betsy Barry is prominently featured in ACK 4170® with her stunning art trays. Betsy is a New England artist who is known for her incredible colored pencil illustrations. Her stunning designs are featured on four different trays for Summer 2022. The tray motifs include: grey whale, the Nantucket Island chart and lighthouses, hydrangeas in full bloom, and shucked oysters. This shop also features Barry’s designs on linens, including napkin sets and tea towels. From Nantucket chart handbags and wristlets, to lovely art trays and linens— there’s always something new to discover at ACK 4170® for everyone passionate about coastal living. Stop into their downtown store at 18 Federal Street or visit them at ack4170.com.

The Future Needs a Quorum by Robert P. Barsanti
The traffic doesn’t come in and out of the elementary school as it used to. Parents are spending an extra moment or two with the kids, hoping that they remember how to smear blood on themselves and play dead if the moment occurs. The building has so many doors, so many windows, and hasn’t become the hard target that all of the good schools aspire to be these days. We are AWARE. We know. We know who the danger is. All of us who have ever fired a gun at a beer can or paper target, remember THAT guy who had the gun he couldn’t afford, who had bedazzled the stock, and who wore an authentic replica uniform. Live and let live, it takes all sorts, and we eye the JayVee Jugaloo. And we hope that today isn’t the day that it clicks in his head that he has the power. Today, we won’t think about him. We won’t think about the mothers who wrote the names and address on the back of their kids when they sent them out of Ukraine. We won’t think of the little voices whispering to 911 on the floor of their classroom. And we won’t think about providing a DNA sample, in case there’s a match. Today, we keep our heads down and hope it isn’t today. We let the kids go out the door with a kiss. “I’ll pick you up at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club” we pray. Helpless. Every thinking adult on our island has gotten comfortable with feeling helpless. We can’t prevent machine gun poets from splattering the walls of stores, theaters, or elementary schools. We can’t keep the unmasked coughing idiots from the boat. We can’t prevent the billionaires from buying the neighborhood up for dorm housing. We can’t prevent off-island corporations from buy-
ing up the island’s small businesses and converting them into boutique “visions of Nantucket.” We can’t prevent the gas prices from rising, Keeper’s from closing, or the scallops from choking on algae. Helpless. So we look at our phones and send out Instagram hearts. We watch Charli’s newest dance. We look for the right place to send that big, black Angry Bird in order to clear the pigs. Then we hope to pick up our kids. We look to control what we can control inside our little gardens, and let the world spin the way it will. The Supreme Court doesn’t sleep in my bed. Tucker Carlson isn’t in my living room. The former president isn’t on the john. If we can keep our heads down, keep the work coming, and the creek don’t rise, we’ll be fine. We are tired. Exhausted. One outrage follows the other in a slideshow of crazy. Helplessness is the triumph of hate. We sit on our sofas like ash, extinguished and cooling. On-island, money incinerates the past. The neighbor sold his house for three million and then the new owners knocked it down. The nice old couple gave their house to their kids and now it is broken into a third of an acre lots. Everyone is working August hours in May, because none of the workers can come here anymore. The flow of friendly faces disappearing on the boat saps my heart. Doctors, nurses, teachers, and police sell their lottery ticket of land and head to Maine. Almost 75% of the island didn’t vote this year. While the turnout isn’t the lowest the island has ever seen, the helplessness has infected the body politic. The fascists in this country want to shoot up the classroom of civic virtue. The continued on page 19

government agencies, businesses, and individuals who work collaboratively on biodiversity of our island system (nantucketbiodiversity.org). This June, the NBI is again hosting one of their signature events— the Science Showcase. This event, held during even years for NBI, highlights the biodiversity research and conservation work of island partners. Member organizations design field trips and workshops showcasing research around our island. Sharing this work with the Nantucket community is a primary goal for NBI: education is an important part of its mission. The free events are held at a range of island locations: from upland grasslands to freshwater marshes, and includes harbor explorations, rare species conservation, and invasive species eradication. There is something for everyone to participate in. "For the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative, the Science Showcase is a handson experience NBI uses to bring the public out into the field where biologists and other scientists are researching species of life on the island and in its waters. While each of Nantucket’s conservation nonprofits report on their research efforts in their newsletters, in newspaper articles and during various lecture series throughout the year, there’s absolutely nothing like walking out into the island wilderness and seeing our natural world through the eyes of those who study it,” said Peter Brace, co-chair of the Science Showcase Event and the guide and owner of Nantucket Walkabout, an NBI partnering business. So, how can you be involved? The week of activities begins Monday, June 6 at 6pm with the keynote talk at the Nantucket Atheneum, downtown at 1 India Street. Ben Goulet-Scott and Jacob Suissa will be co-presenting a talk entitled Let’s Botanize: Democratizing Plant Biology. Both speakers recently completed their PhDs at Harvard in the department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and, in 2020, they started Let’s Botanize, a social media-based science communication series using plant life to teach about ecology, evolution, and biodiversity. Their goal is to create educational content that is accessible and entertaining without compromising on scientific rigor. You can find their content on Instagram @letsbotanize and on TikTok. Their talk is free and open to the public in the Atheneum’s Great Hall. continued on page 13

Science Showcase
Subject to change without notice
from page 10
On Tuesday, June 7 at 9am, you can be one of the first to explore a new property with the Linda Loring Nature Foundation. The recently acquired landscape is adjacent to the original LLNF property consisting of freshwater wetlands, sandplain grasslands, and a former cranberry bog. This will be an exciting opportunity since this spot is currently closed to the public. Also on Tuesday (at 12:30pm), the Nantucket Conservation Foundation is hosting a field trip to explore a novel salt marsh restoration and oyster reef resilience project—the first of its kind in the state! There are opportunities to participate in invasive plant identification and removal. The Nantucket Land Bank is hosting a trail walk at the Head of the Plains, where they will focus on various methods of management for grasslands and other early successional habitats. The Maria Mitchell Association will bring participants to the water with Aquarium Director Jack Dubinsky for a survey of invasive European green crabs. You’ll learn about the impacts of green crabs on eelgrass biodiversity and learn about ways to use green crabs as fishing bait and for food. Yum! This is only a few of the amazing events scheduled. There’s even a harbor cruise to learn more about our local marine biodiversity. Visit the NBI website nantucketbiodiversity.org/science-showcase for the up-to-date and complete schedule and to register for the events you want to attend. Learning from those of us “in the trenches” or pursuing conservation work is what makes the Science Showcase week so unique. Instead of hearing the perspective of just one group, you can learn from a suite of professionals in a fiveday period. It’s also a great chance to ask questions of people from the various organizations. What have you always wanted to know? Dr. Jen Karberg of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation is the current Chair of the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative. She notes: “NBI brings together researchers from on- and off-island to collaborate on research questions important to Nantucket. The Science Showcase event is a fabulous program that allows us to highlight all of that research in a way the public can interact with. This event is how NBI connects our research work to the island and the people who live here and work here.”

Charters up to six passengers When Judi Hill came up with the idea of a lightship basket holder for salt and pepper shakers, it was Maggie who made Judi’s vision a reality. And it’s Maggie Silva who weaves the gorgeous miniature baskets that are available in the G.S. Hill Gallery. These tiny masterpieces are exquisite and often become heirloom Christmas tree ornaments. When Maggie first started weaving, she was making reed baskets. She loved it! “After I made three of them, I decided to teach it...if you can teach a first grader continued on page 18

CORNER OF EASY & BROAD STREETS Written by that “wild and crazy guy” Steve Martin, Meteor Shower is startling, unexpected, and irreverent—full of bawdy adult humor that is sometimes utterly ridiculous but always very funny. It’s another professional production by Theatre Workshop of Nantucket that you don’t want to miss!
The surreal comedy opens with Corky and Norm, an uptight couple working on their rocky relationship, anxiously waiting to show off their home to Laura and Gerald, a couple they don’t know well but invited over for snacks, wine, and to watch a meteor shower. Becontinued on page 17

fore Laura and Gerald even knock on the door, it quickly becomes clear that these guests have another goal in mind: “Let’s go for total collapse.” To describe the plot of Meteor Shower beyond this basic premise would spoil the fun. The play toys with time: pausing, rewinding the plot, and moving forward with shifted circumstances on a different track till the final rewind completely flips the script and the play careens to a surprise ending. (Did we see Gerald and Laura leave?) The casting was perfect; the skillfully constructed revolving stage moved the action seamlessly from living room to outdoor patio; and the play was brilliantly directed by TWN’s talented Justin Cerne. four actors were energetic, engaging, expressive, and very entertaining. Jeremy Webb is completely believable as Norm, innocent, quirky, and insecure…until he’s not. And meek, naive Corky is very well-played, psychobabble and all, by Mollie Vogt-Welch. Verity Branco is spot-on as the swinging, snarky, passive-aggressive Laura, who tramples Corky with one-liners like “I love that you never fixed up the kitchen.” And David T. Patterson is charmingly depraved as the mischievous Gordon, of whom Laura remarks “Everything reminds him of him.” As the play progresses, situations rapidly spin out of control. Clever wordplay, ribald remarks and innuendo, one-liners, and buffoonery tumble together for an hour-and-a half of hilarity. But when the lights go up and the laughter fades, after agreeing with everyone else in the audience that this was Steve Martin at his best, you’re left to ponder what exactly just happened. There are serious themes tucked into this riotous humor. Are the characters mirror image couples or alter egos: just how Freudian is Steve Martin’s play? As Corky says (twice) “If you don’t deal with your subconscious, it will deal with you.” We recommend you do as Norm does when he says: “I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m just gonna go with it.” Head over to the TWN theatre in Bennett Hall on Centre Street to enjoy an evening of belly laughs and leave the philosophy for tomorrow morning. Meteor Shower is an adult comedy performed by Theatre Workshop of Nantucket through June 18. Curtain goes up Tuesday through Saturday at 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased at theatrenantucket.org or by calling the box office at 508-228-4305. Meteor Shower is 90 minutes and performed without an intermission.

how to read, you can teach anyone anything,” she chuckled. “My mother did all kinds of crafts, so I grew up learning to do them, too.” Twenty years ago, after retiring from her job in the school system, Maggie decided to devote her time to weaving Nantucket Lightship Baskets. “I always wanted to make a Nantucket basket... by this time I had made hundreds of reed baskets, and I was tired of them.” Once she found a teacher and the proper supplies, she started making full-size baskets. The miniatures came later: “over the years, narrower weaving materials have become easier to find. I like the look of a finer weave, so on the minis I use 1mm cane, it’s like ribbon. “The first mold I used was from a Tupperware lettuce container: I made my first Nantucket basket from that,” Maggie explained. “My husband was a custom cabinet maker, so [after that] he made my basket molds...now my son does.” She adores the craft and takes great pride in her work. “I emphasize the quality...I sand the bases and handles, and I do four coats [of finish] on each to build up the pores instead of just adding a coating...when you pick up the basket, you want to feel it... smooth as a baby’s bottom!” Maggie started with traditional Nantucket Lightship Basket styles, then started tweaking the designs. “Because I have a background in reed basketry, I would sometimes incorporate what I learned in that craft in my Nantucket baskets. Some adaptations were on purpose, some serendipity. Usually in miniature baskets you only see round ones and ovals, but I have miniaturized a lot of my designs.” Creating a full size Nantucket Lightship Basket usually takes Maggie several days. The minis she makes in stages: “I cut and shape all the ribs, insert them into the base, and then let them sit overnight. Then I weave the next day.” When asked which of the dozens of different styles she has woven in her miniature Nantucket Lightship Baskets she likes the best, Maggie simply said “I love them all. Once I get started, that one is my favorite!” A new selection of Maggie Silva miniature Nantucket Lightship Baskets are now available in the G.S. Hill Gallery. When you stop by, ask Judi about Nantucket Lightship Ring Bearer Baskets. The gallery is open daily for the 2022 season. Some of Silva’s baskets are also in the collection of the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum, founded in 1997 to preserve the rich history of this island craft.

The Future Needs A Quorum from page 9
boards and the committees want for participation, as if everyone wants to get shouted at over outdoor dining regulations and mask mandates. If we believe that government can’t be the answer, then it won’t be. The Plutocrats will have their lawyers draft a memo, post it in the locker room at the Golf Club, and we will all take notes. Maybe we’ll have fireworks this year. However, this election brought Matt Fee back to the Selectman’s table for his fifth term in the dunking barrel. In his time, he has outlasted Kopko, Glowaki, Soverino, Watts, Isky, Glidden, Atherton, and Doug (I’m waving here!) Bennett. We all lost when we couldn’t imagine a use for the land and fields of Westmoor, but since then the island has spun through sewer systems, firemen’s contracts, municipal buildings, and Covid. He gets to eye the Hedge Fund Heroes and their coir bags, the developers, the investors, and the potholes. Always the pot holes. I don’t agree with everything he stands for, but I appreciate that he stands. Even if his shirt is dirty. Hope has snot on its shirt. It shows up for meetings with disheveled folders of paper, stuffed like roast beef into a sandwich. Hope does not wave a bloody shirt at the Rotary, nor does it hold a bullhorn or a gun. Hope keeps showing up, lining up the microphone, and starting the meeting. Government works when we believe in it. Maybe not as well as we would like...maybe not with the speed that we want...but it inches its way forward. It’s the help that isn’t helpless, it’s the hope that isn’t hopeless. He lives on a lottery ticket, the plans already laid out and approved. Someone from Harvard has already put a forefinger on his arm and made an offer. I’m sure he is as exhausted, annoyed, and interested in a one-way trip off-island as any other islander. But he shows up, stands up, and speaks up. The island is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it. For seventy-five percent of the island, change is surrendered up to the digital apathy of business and bother. Most of the voters are content to sit down, dip their heads, and whine over their coffee. But those that aren’t: take a vote, raise your hand, and join a committee. Today isn’t the day we duck our heads and pray. The future needs a quorum. Change does not come from the barrel of a gun but from the stroke of a sharpie.
