A Youth Spent with Travis McGee by Robert P. Barsanti The dump has many treasures. I have found many toys and shirts in the shed, and I have one son who will take almost every VHS tape he can find away from it. The tree does not grow far from the apple. I am one to walk out of the shed with three or four books at a time. I may even read them. Take It or Leave It contains a depressing number of books. In my time, books lined the walls of your house in some sort of order and you were a sad and ignorant embarrassment if you didn’t own a bookcase or two. People owned bookcases to pretend that they had read all of the books. Alas, my time has passed by and taken the newspaper, the magazine, and the crossword along with it. When I see the lines and lines of books filling the shelves at the dump, I imagine some energetic middle-aged Chad is busy cleaning out Grandpa’s shelves so he can hang a seventy-inch plasma TV against the wall and watch golf. The times change, and we change with them. I had a privileged childhood. I know that now. The years slowly educate you. In age, you lose those things you assumed would always exist, and, in your sad and expensive wisdom, you reach back to a time when you didn't know how lucky you were. The privilege of my youth was time, and I spent it reading. In the summer months, when I could have been working in the tobacco fields like my grandfather or in the sandwich shop like my son, I sat on a beach chair and read. I spent my youth on Travis McGee. Oh, I read others. At one point, I had read all of the James Bond series, Adam Hall, John LeCarre (whom I didn't understand), and Alistair MacLean. For all of the valuable time I was spending, I wasn't buying tenderloin but hamburger. I was a connoisseur of fine airport trash. My father tried to get me to read Arundel by Kenneth Roberts, but it was far too educated for me. I had, however, what every young man needs; an indulgent uncle. My Uncle James was a Roman Catholic Priest in Boston in what proved to be a dangerous and painful time for the holy order. He was continued on page 19

Art by Island Kids... The Artists Association of Nantucket has been dedicated to art education since the organization was founded, and this includes a mission to nurture artists of all ages. This week, AAN will host a Kids’ Art Show featuring art created during the past year in classes and workshops at their Visual Arts Center on 24 Amelia Drive. “It is wonderful to have a gallery at the Visual Arts Center where we can exhibit the work being made in our programs, especially the children’s art. Education programming for both children and adults is central to our mission, and we are always pleased to see the work made in our beautiful new studios,” said AAN executive director, Cecil Barron Jensen. “Since moving into the VAC, AAN programming opportunities have grown tremendously, and our students and their families are so excited by the many new classes and teachers. In addition, we are delighted that we’ve been able to reach out to new students thanks to added collaborations within the community,” said AAN Children’s Arts Program Director, Lori Garrabrant. “Everyone is going to love seeing the kids’ art.” The gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and the exhibition will be on display until Wednesday, June 15. continued on page 5

Starting Tuesday, June 14, the Artists Association will host its fifth annual Plein Air Festival through Sunday, June 19. The festival will end with an evening reception and presentation of the Frank Swift Chase Awards in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. Plein Air Nantucket is open to all artists, at any skill level, who wish to paint in the fresh air and pristine scenery of the island, and enjoy the camaraderie of painting with peers. A huge proponent of en plein air painting, Frank Swift Chase taught outdoor classes starting in 1920 through the early 1950s, and the core of his regular students became the founders of the AAN. In this spirit, AAN annually hosts Plein Air Nantucket. “This year I’m scheduling a Brant Point plein air paint-out on Wednesday of the festival,” said festival founder Robert Frazier. “Open to all artists, we encourage the public to come and watch us paint. We’ll be there from 10 am until at least 2 pm. We’re also continuing with a popular feature called the Wet Wall, where art works that have been completed as part of the festival can be posted at the Gallery immediately each day for the public to view and purchase,” added Frazier. Interested painters may sign up on Tuesday, June 14 beginning at 9:30 am in the gallery. There is a small entry fee of $10 for up to four works. All artists’ canvases are limited to 14 x 18 or smaller, and will be stamped by the AAN at registration. For details about this and other Artists Association shows and exhibitions as well as their classes, workshops, and other programs, visit nantucketarts.org.

Here We Go Again: Another Oil Crisis

Sail Endeavor a Nantucket tradition. established 1982

by Amy Jenness author of On This Day In Nantucket History The sun will be an economically viable source of electricity within a decade, and solar panels have the potential to surpass fossil fuel, wind, and nuclear power production by 2050. That is the opinion of the International Energy Agency, a 42year-old organization that represents 29 countries and has a mission to make reliable, affordable and clean energy a reality. Industry leaders and analysts agree that world oil production will peak between 2010 and 2030, and quite possibly by 2020. At the moment oil prices are lower than they have been in decades, half of all American oil workers are out of a job, and investors are shy about funding petroleum and natural gas projects. Those current economic conditions have more to do with global politics and investor decisions than supply. But there is no dispute that industries dependent on fossil fuels will radically change, perhaps even disappear, within our lifetime. America has been here before with another non-renewable source of light— whale oil. Nantucket whalers, considered the best in the world at the peak of whaling, became expert at providing the world with sperm whale oil, the hottest commodity at that time. Found only in the head of a sperm whale, one animal can contain up to three tons of the thick oil called spermaceti. On Nantucket, what began as a beach-based whaling endeavor evolved into a

Even if you’re not much of a sparkling wine drinker, there are some special occasions that call for more than just the usual libations of a Dark & Stormy or Nantucket Mule. There’s no better way to liven up your soiree than by serving something that sparkles and shines. The first key point to remember even before you think about popping that cork, is that the bottle must be thoroughly chilled. Glass on a Champagne bottle is almost twice as thick as a regular wine bottle due to the gas pressure inside. Therefore, it takes longer for a bubbly bottle to achieve its optimal temperature than it does for other wines bottles. The proper temperature for serving Champagne or other sparkling wines is from 43 to 48 degrees F. There’s no thermometer for wine in a bottle, so you won’t know the temperature of what’s inside until you open it. The best way to ensure that your bottle is chilled to the ideal temperature is to put it in a fridge set in the proper temperature range and can be monitored for at least four hours before opening. Just because the bottle feels chilled to the touch does not mean that the juice inside has had sufficient time to cool. A method to quickly chill the bottle is to submerge it in an ice bath comprised of half ice and half water, sprinkled with a generous amount of kosher salt. You are probably wondering what affect the kosher salt has on this whole process. First of all, ocean water freezes just like regular freshwater, but at a lower temperature. By using salt in your chilling process, the temperature of the water will actually go below the usual 32 degrees F freezing temperature. The other benefit to using kosher salt is that is a larger, more granular salt than regular table salt. Therefore, it does not dissolve as quickly as table salt and assists in bringing the water to a colder temperature. Note that salt and ice alone will not do the trick, as they must first be combined with water in order to start the chilling process. Once your sparkling treat has been properly cooled, it’s time to open it. There’s a proper technique for this as well; you don’t want to risk shooting the cork across the room and cause bodily harm—nor do you want the contents of the bottle spewing out all over the place, leaving you with less of it to drink. Therefore, it is important not to be careless in how you extract the cork from a bottle that is under a significant amount of pressure. First: have a dry hand towel at the ready. Next: remove the foil that covers the cork. Some sparkling wines have a small tab that you can pull to easily peel off a thin line around the circumference of the foil, allowing you to remove the top portion. Otherwise, use the knife on a wine opener in order to cut and remove the foil, just as you would for a regular wine bottle. Once the foil has been removed, cover the cage with your trusty hand towel. Next, hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle (NOT straight up and down—you could potentially poke your eye out). Using one hand, cover and hold the top of the bottle with the towel. Use the other hand to untwist the wire on the cage,

Exploring Nantucket Behind-the-Scenes at Bartlett’s Farm by Sarah Morneau

Shearwater Excursions is Nantucket’s premiere family-run Eco-Tour company. We provide a memorable experience for all ages.

Who’s your farmer? Have you ever wondered where those juicy, beautiful Bartlett’s Farm hot house tomatoes are grown? Or how the pots of flowers, herbs, and veggie seedlings that you plant in your garden and window boxes year after year get their start? I honestly hadn’t given it too much thought until last Thursday when I joined the free Farm Tour and got a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day operations at Bartlett’s Farm. Directed by long time employee Hilary Newell, the tour met at the front of the store and led us out back through the garden center and into a sea of greenhouses that aren’t directly visible to the public while shopping at the market. As we walk, Hilary gives a history of the farm. She and her husband Pete have been with the Bartlett family for 30 years, so she knows her stuff, and you can tell she is passionate about what she does. Bartlett’s Farm has 39 greenhouses, with most dedicated to ornamental plantings and tomatoes, and a few reserved for their experimental projects. They have 100 acres under cultivation and another 100 acres that the market, employee housing, and parking lots are situated upon. Their greenhouses range from the intricate Dutch gutter connected with irrigation and climate control to the basic hoop house structure. My favorite part of the tour was getting a glimpse of the tomato greenhouses. Stepping inside the tomato house was like entering a tropical rainforest, my camera lens fogging with the humidity. I had no idea tomato plants could grow so tall and lush, their branches laden with the heavy fruits. Another guest on the tour exclaimed, “So this is where the tomatoes for the ‘Bartlett’s Farm Tomato Salad’ on the restaurant menus come from!” Hilary points out the importance of eating local. Would you rather have herbs that were picked in Mexico or California, shipped across the country, trucked onto a boat, then unloaded at the grocery store a week later or get your herbs at the farm that were picked, rinsed, and bagged within an hour of hitting the shelves? Local and fresh makes a difference! This walking tour is free and takes about an hour, just wear comfortable shoes and meet in front of the market. The farm tours will continue into the beginning of July, check their calendar at BartlettsFarm.com or the events in this publication for dates and times. In July the Farm Tour will turn into a Flower Tour, where you can pick your own flowers from their fields for $30. Also, look forward to their Strawberry Festival happening on June 27th and their Farm-to-Table dinners throughout the season.

Oil Crisis from page 7

global shipping empire once island men killed their first sperm whale in 1712. Within three years Nantucket had six ships at sea, and by 1730 it had 25. At the height of whaling in 1846, there were 736 American ships hunting whales all over the world. The discovery that spermaceti oil burned brighter and cleaner than all other oils quickly made it the best choice for city street lights, lighthouses, and homes. And, when the Industrial Revolution mechanized the world, engineers used spermaceti and its derivatives as a lubricant in automatic transmission fluid and in the workings of locomotives, airplanes, sewing machines, textile mill machinery, watches, and firearms. The soap and cosmetics industries also used it. Like petroleum, the huge demand for whale-based commodities shaped American and European economies and politics and made Nantucket a wealthy capital of whaling. The more governments and industry depended on whale oil, the more they looked to island captains and businessmen to help them. But hunting and processing whales from the tiny island of Nantucket had never been easy. Nantucketers were expert mariners and savvy businessmen, but lacked a home base with the resources to build and outfit whaleships. Their vessels were constantly under attack by privateers during wartime. And England, a huge market, imposed a punitive tax on whale products after the American Revolution. Nantucketers remained nimble, shifting whaling operations to Canada, France, and England. They created popular, lucrative new products like the spermaceti candle. They innovated at-sea processing methods that allowed them to sail the world hunting whales. In addition, they had to adapt to a declining whale population in nearby waters. Late in the 18th century, whaleship captains figured out how to make the treacherous journey around the tip of South America into the Pacific Ocean, which opened up a whole new era. Now gone three to four years searching for sperm whales, Nantucket ships became floating stockyards as the crew hunted and dismantled giant whales and then processed their body parts onboard their ships. When whale populations diminished in the Pacific, whalers headed north to the Arctic Sea. Despite these maneuvers, Nantucket lost ground as the whaling capital by the mid-1840s due to a constellation of changes. All whaling peaked between 1846 and 1852. A devastating 1846 fire that leveled the town and the wharves, as well as a shifting and growing sandbar across

the entrance to Nantucket harbor, were dilemmas specific to the island. But other factors included the discovery of gold in California, which lured away young men who might have gone to sea. New land-based jobs in factories were safer and paid better. New processes in kerosene distillation in the 1850s made it a cheaper light source. In the 1860s the civil war further depleted New England whaler resources. By 1870 Nantucket’s last whaling voyage was done and the island was in a deep economic depression. America’s whaling center had shifted to New Bedford, and by 1850 that city also experienced the levels of wealth and prosperity first seen on Nantucket. But it would not last. The demand for kerosene light replaced whale oil, and by the 1870s and 1880s innovations in electric lighting made kerosene unpopular. New Bedford’s last whaling voyage left in 1927. American whaling continued, but the demand for whale oil as a lighting source fell so drastically that it was barely economically feasible. By the 1970s, whaling had so depleted populations worldwide that environmentalists feared several species of whales would go extinct. In 1973, Congress amended the Endangered Species Act to outlaw the killing of whales and their uses. Although Americans are banned from hunting whales, other countries still do. In 1986, the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling worldwide, although certain countries are permitted to take an amount regulated by the IWC. Prior to 1973, more than 30 million pounds of sperm whale oil was used annually in America in lubricants. The ban affected the car industry deeply. Car transmission failures rose from under one million in 1972 to over eight million by 1975. Since then, chemists have figured out that oil extracted from the jojoba plant, a desert shrub native to the American southwest and Mexico, has the same versatile molecular properties as spermaceti oil. Today, jojoba oil is now used in the same ways that spermaceti oil used to be: in transmission fluid, engine oil, on firearms, and in cosmetics. The American jojoba industry has also worked hard to get European cosmetic manufacturers still using spermaceti to replace it. Some have agreed as recently as 2012 to use jojoba. In addition, jojoba is often found in shampoo, soap, lotion, and is used as a fungicide. Scientists are even researching jojoba to see if it could fuel cars and other engines. They have proven that it works as a fuel source, but would need to figure out how to produce it in vast quantities. So, when economists and politicians consider the dilemma of the diminishing supply of fossil fuel, perhaps they will find solutions in the renewable, plant-version of that miraculous spermaceti — jojoba oil.

Travis McGee

Award-Winning Artisan since 1981 from page 3

cool. He took me to a Jackson Browne concert and to the Pink Panther movies. When he came to our house, he would bring Cool Ranch Doritos and Mad Magazine. Sometime in my middle school years, he slipped mysteries in to my hands and then the books of John D. MacDonald and his boat bum hero. Travis McGee was a man of his time, who, typically, thought of himself outside of his time. He wasn’t a detective exactly. He was a salvage consultant who collected 50% of the worth of the lost item as a fee. He liked young women in bikinis, Plymouth Gin, and rare beef tenderloin. The Modern American Consensus does not approve of bachelor knight errants who live in conspicuous consumption, but adolescent boys in suburbia did. He embodied a certain male privilege, from his houseboat The Busted Flush to his blue Rolls Royce pick up truck, “Miss Agnes.” He, like all of the heroes of the seventies, could have been played by Alan Alda or Jack Nicholson; irresistible to women, highly skilled, and an utter disregard for authority. In the new millennium, we can no longer emulate such a life ironically. But I was not weighed down with such scruples in high school. Who wouldn’t want to take your retirement in installments, handle a gun and a bonefish, and put the boat out to sea when the moment struck? I bought all of the books in used bookstores, then read them over and over until I had frittered my summer days away. Just like Puff the Magic Dragon, Travis McGee slipped into the past. But heroes never leave. They remain just where they always were, and even if you can’t get down to Fort Lauderdale this year, they remain on the houseboat tied up at the slip. Then, when life shows you her teeth, the oncologist is calling, and you find yourself staring out the back door at three in the morning, heroes stop in with a beer, a smile, and a familiar plan. Years later, after college and graduate school, after my mother and my uncle, I found myself back at Slip F-18, Bahia Mar, with T. McGee on the Busted Flush. My mother-in-law was portioning out her remaining time into novels. She wanted good ones and, since I have a degree in that sort of thing, I needed to provide them. So, I welcomed Travis McGee into her life. The beach bum had aged, and the writing that I had enjoyed so much didn't hold up next to the rest of the literature my graduate degree had pressed into me. But, the carpe diem soliloquies and the hard cynical words for the rapacious land developers struck an even louder bell out here among the realtors and the contractors. Out of his place and his time, Travis still knew what to do. They spent her time well. I still have the books, although they do not fill any shelves in my house. Instead, they sit in a cardboard box in the basement, next to some unused pots and an extra box of liquor. My shelves contain more practical works, and my hours hold more professional pursuits. We measure our days in coffee cups, our months in pay checks, and our years in children. A meter runs and ticks through its numbers, as the electricity, the cable, the cell-phone, and the bar tab build. You have to pay for every hour, one way or another. The privilege of reading is an expensive privilege indeed, even if your books come from the dump. In our new millennium, we can no longer afford sitting silent for long summer hours in a beach chair with a book. The world is always updating. The privilege of my youth was time, and I spent it reading. I paid for a retreat in Florida, in Fort Lauderdale. Travis McGee will always be there, even if I never pick up the books again. We can drink gin and tonics, damn the latest developments in Surfside and Sconset, and find a way to somehow recover what was lost. And keep 50%.

called the muselet, that covers the cork. This can usually be achieved in fourand-one-half twists (go ahead and test me!), but do not remove the cage. Just loosen the cage enough so that it can glide over the lip of the bottle with no obstruction. At this point, keep your hand with the towel covering the top, and grip the bottom of the bottle with your opposite hand, still at the slanted angle. Twist the bottle, not the cork, in order to open it, all the while holding your other hand over the cage, cork, and towel. This method enables you to have more control over the bottle and the pressure that is exerted when the cork finally emerges. Unlike what you see in the movies, the removal of the cork should sound like a whisper and be almost inaudible to the anxiously awaiting, thirsty crowd. After you have safely extracted the cork, it is now time to pour around for everyone. When serving sparkling wine, it is recommended to hold the glass by the stem and tilt it at a slight angle. You will then slowly (at a turtle’s pace) pour the bubbly down the side of the glass until it is about half way full. At this time, you can then tilt the glass to its upright position and finish pouring. It is not considered proper service to pour quickly, have to stop midstream in order for the bubbles to dissipate, then restart pouring more into the glass. Never fill a Champagne glass to the rim, as the effervescence needs some room at the top in order to do its sparkling business. With these handy details on how to perform bona fide Champagne service, you will have no need to be intimidated next time you’re asked to do the honors.

Featured Restaurant: TOPPER’S at the Wauwinet

Escape into Luxury

Roasted Chicken VeloutĂŠ

As we drove the from town, past Moors End Farm, past the Life-Saving Museum, and down the winding Polpis Road on a sparkling Nantucket evening last week, we slowly let go of the tensions of the day. Eight miles is a long way to travel on Nantucket, but this is such a pretty drive that we were a little disappointed that we arrived so quickly at the Wauwinet Gatehouse, entry to the wild and beautiful Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. Here, between the bay and the ocean near the northern tip of Nantucket, is nestled the island’s most sophisticated and civilized inn and restaurant, The Wauwinet. It’s a study in contrasts, this luxurious escape just a few yards in any direction from the untamed beauty of Nantucket. Within this lavish inn was our destination: TOPPER’S at The Wauwinet. TOPPER’S has a sumptuously appointed dining room, but we opted for a table on their spacious deck to enjoy an elegant alfresco dinner, with views of the TOPPERS’S garden, the manicured lawn, and the bay beyond. This is a perfect spot for sipping and savoring the sunset, and TOPPER’S has the wine list to top them all. Carefully curated by Cellar Master Craig Hanna, the list features 1500 labels and an inventory of 20,000 bottles. Topper’s at The Wauwinet has been an annual recipient of the Wine Spectator Grand Award since 1996. This season, Hanna explained, “Topper’s will focus on great value and pricing on mature vintages and Grand Crus in the region of Nantucket’s official sister city, Beaune, in the heart of Burgundy. Look for additional excellent representation in our other focal points of Piedmont, The Rhone, Champagne, and half bottles. Seated on the deck, we had the choice of the prix fixe dinner menu ($85 for three courses), the six-course Chef’s Tasting Menus (Vegetarian or Omnivore featuring arctic char, foie, lobster, and veal), or the Deck Menu, with more casual fare ranging from fresh oysters to wagyu burger, lobster pasta to NY strip. We’d been here before and have tasted the cuisine of Executive Chef Kyle Zachary, so it was the full-on prix fixe for us. It takes a special talent to get all the details just right on every dish that comes out of Chef Zachary’s kitchen: dishes that emphasize the fresh seasonal harvest without relying on heavy sauces or overwrought presentations. Preparations here are deliciously straightforward, made with very high quality ingredients allowed to shine. As Chef Zachary explained: “There’s such great produce available to us here...We focus on the produce first and build on that. Here healthy and luscious are not mutually exclusive.

Our meal began with an assortment of breads freshly baked and warm: brioche, parmesan foccacia, and the signature Wauwinet brown bread. Meyer Lemon Custards baked in porcelain egg cups and adorned with delicate chive blossoms were brought next, nested in a woven basket. The tart and sweet and savory notes of these amuse-bouche woke all our senses to the meal to come. An exuberant celebration of colors, textures, and tastes is how we’d describe chef Zachary’s Spring Harvest appetizer. It’s almost too pretty to eat. Tender-crisp carrots, white and green asparagus, sweet sugar snap peas, curled fiddleheads, are tossed with pickled mushrooms, slices of bulls eye radish, nasturtium, chive flowers and other bright, edible blossoms in a light, puckery dressing. Plump blackberries and wedges of nectarine add juicy sweetness, and thin quinoa crisps provide a tasty crunch. (Suggested Pairing: Hanger One Lime Vodka “Lime Drop Martini) Another summery delight is the Citrus Cured Arctic Char. A subdued spa presentation of clean lines and soft colors belies the vibrant, complex flavors assembled in this dish. From the creamy smear of avocado to the pickled

Citrus Cured Arctic Char

cucumber and hearts of palm, the smoked roe, and the dabs of coconut milk that are arranged around the sparkling fresh fish, every bite is more exciting than the next. (Suggested Pairing: Chilled Aquavit) The two hot appetizers we enjoyed were on opposite ends of the spectrum. Roasted Chicken VeloutÊ is a dish of luxurious flavors. The artichokes, ricotta gnocchi, morels, carrot, and celery with discs of summer truffle are presented in a shallow bowl. The server pours all around this a sensuously rich, dark reduction that is the essence of roasted chicken. (Suggested Pairing: 2014 Jadot Macon Villages) The Carnaroli Rice Risotto tastes more of seafood than of rice with jonah crab, rock shrimp, and Maine sea urchin. Even the rice is cooked with lobster stock. One of Chef Carnaroli Rice Risotto Zachary’s favorites, he

describes this sensational dish as “a big umami bomb.” Even the garnishes add deep, rich flavor: a brown butter emulsion topped with bright yellow grated bottarga. (Suggested Pairing: 2014 Frescobaldi Vermentino “Ammiraglia”) Among the entrees, Chef Zachary recommends the Roasted Loin of Rabbit. Impressively moist and Roasted Loin of Rabbit tender, the saddle is prepared in a ballotine style, sous vide, and presented with folds of smoky, salty serrano ham with a smoked date puree and sweet roasted carrots. The legs are served over seared foie and topped with luxurious satiny potato puree. (Suggested Pairing: 2014 Maison l’Envoye Pinot Noir “Two Messengers, Willamette”) This chef is known for his “tastings,” in which he prepares an ingredient —often lamb or veal or pork— in several ways Tasting of Free Range Veal for the same entree. We love his Tasting of Free Range Veal on the current menu: sauteed sweetbreads, sliced sirloin with a delicious thin cap of crisp browned fat, and short rib bundled in chard. Cheesy aligot, a meaty sauteed king trumpet mushroom, and sweet roasted onions bring the flavors together. (Suggested Pairing: 2010 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino) Grand Banks Halibut demonstrates that Chef Zachary is as skilled with fish as he is with meats. cious golden crust topped with meyer lemon sabayon. A beautifully composed salad of pickled white asparagus, fiddleheads, and fava beans is served alongside. (Suggested Pairing: 2012 LatourGiraud Meursault “Charles Maxine”) In keeping with the chef’s devotion to fresh Cloumage Cheese Agnolotti produce, it was his Cloumage Cheese Agnolotti that was our table favorite. Tender housemade beet pasta is filled with award-winning creamy cloumage cheese and served with sweet roasted beets. Toasty pistachio gremolata sprinkled overtop adds a tasty crunch, and segments of blood orange add sweet pops of juice. Fresh and braised beet greens help cut the sweetness of the dish with a pleasantly bitter bite. (Suggested Pairing: 2015 Mittlebach Rose of Zweigelt) Dessert is obligatory in a three-course prix fixe, and who are we to argue? Pastry Chef Giancarlo D'Attili’s mastery matches well with Chef Zachary’s. His Chocolate Parfait is a layered wonder: white chocolate ice cream over Maracaibo chocolate bavarian, over devils food cake, with hot milk chocolate poured over it all. Chef D’Attili’s Hazelnut Bomb is a dome of delicious marscarpone mousse flavored with Frangelico and dusted with hazlenut coffee. Bits of caked soaked in hazlenut coffee are scattered about and a scoop of espresso ice cream is perched on a hazlenut brittle. Tangy and intensely flavorful, the Guava Cremeaux will transport you Guava Cremeaux to the tropics. Assorted housemade Ice Creams and Sorbets are offered for a dessert that is light and sweet and simply wonderful. As we lingered on the deck, watching the stars come out over the bay, it would not have taken much to convince us to stay. Perhaps our next trip to Wauwinet will be for a weekend. One day at a time, author Amy Jenness offers up quirky and fascinating stories of the people and events that shaped this remote island. On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass made his first antislavery speech at the Nantucket Atheneum. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, devastated the island, forcing residents to rebuild what they lost. On December 5, 1981, a nor’easter stranded nearly two thousand visitors and forced seventeen pilot whales to come ashore. Read a story a day or month at a time.
