Calling All Film Fans by Carl Oscar Olson
This year, the Nantucket Film Festival will be one for the books. With programs and events, films, features, and fun for every age and taste, everyone onisland can enjoy a night at the movies. Take it all in at The Dreamland and beyond, from short films for the kids, fun and fascinating documentaries, independent films featuring your favorite screenwriters, directors, and actors, and a whole lot more. From June 22 to the 27, the Nantucket Film Festival is pulling out all the stops for 2022. Now in its 27th year, the Film Festival was founded in 1996 by siblings Jill and Jonathan Burkhart. The two lived on Nantucket year-round and knew there was no better way to express not only their love for film, but for the entire island community. In 1997, Mystelle Brabbée joined the team and today serves as the Executive Director. NFF continues to thrive each year by always remaining true to its mission of honoring screenwriters and storytelling. Over the quarter century it’s been held, Nantucket Film Festival has become one of the premier destination film festivals in the world. Visitors flock from all over to experience preview screenings, Signature Programs, and standout hospitality on Nantucket, where between the many festival events, they can enjoy our island’s rich history, fine dining, pristine nature, and beautiful beaches. Wake up this week with the Film Fest’s Morning Coffee with... where you can start your day downtown with celebrity chat sessions at 9am with writers, actors, directors, and producers. As of press time, there are ticket available for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. The Special Presentations for 2022 feature a wide range of unique and interesting films—from Fire of Love, a documentary delving into a story about a couple’s love for each other and their passion for volcanology, to the animated Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, a story stemming from a series of viral videos about 1inch tell shell eking out an existence with his grandmother and their pet lint. The films Linoleum and Lightyear both explore space in very different ways, and 892 is a story about one man’s struggles with life after wartime. This summer’s Spotlight Films are equally as eclectic, with showings of Cha

Paradise for Fireflies by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD
Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Early last week on one of the warmer June evenings, I was in my backyard watering the garden. As the hose sprayed my small raised bed full of hope (I am a terrible gardener) I noticed a flash in the grassland behind our house. To my surprise, it was a firefly – the first of the season for me. During the week since then, I have been ruminating on how early this seems to me. I don’t typically notice fireflies until mid-summer during backyard BBQs, definitely post-July 4th. But, as we know, one observation isn’t that much data, so I looked into it a little more. First of all, we’ve had some wet weeks this June. The past month weather has been lovely with some pretty nice days. A few people even went to the beach! But there have also been thunderstorms and intermittent rain events. Why does that matter? Fireflies, or lightning bugs, prefer moist, warm soil. Firefly larvae feed on snails, slugs, and pill bugs which are brought out by rains. The damper the soil, the more plentiful the food source will be, and the more food young fireflies will have to carry them into adulthood. It’s the adult fireflies that light up the evenings. The same conditions, namely moisture and warm temperatures that create fog, are also great for fireflies. Nantucket Island should be their favorite place! I checked out my favorite biodiversity database (iNaturalist) and found that there have been many observation of fireflies on the Cape and Islands during the past few weeks. There were even some sightings back in late May! Fireflies are actually bioluminescent beetles rather than true bugs. You can read more about firefly basics at yesterdaysisland.com/join-the-firefly-watch/ from that article: Fireflies and lightning bugs are common names for a family of beetles called Lampyridae. There are actually more than 150 species of fireflies in North America, and more than 2,000 worldwide. They generally divide into three groups based on how they attract mates. There are those that blink in quick flashes, those with long, slow glows, and those that don’t use light at all, but communicate by other means continued on page 20

• FACE MASKS ARE REQUIRED TO RIDE THE WAVE •
On a June evening full of weddings, we drove out to the Sconset Market for an ice cream. The fog remains ascendent in Siasconset, wrapping the homes, the hedge and the trees in winter’s packing. While town was lit with rehearsal dinners and bachelor parties, Sconset slumbered still. The store was open still. The brooms were out and the counters cleaned, but the door remained unlocked. We weren’t out here for anything but a drive. The store was an endpoint, but not a goal. Perhaps some pecans. Perhaps an ice cream. We left home with nowhere to go and arrived here when we were stopped. He was a touch taller than I am, a touch lighter, and touch older. He called out our names and held out his hand. And then he unwound a tale. “In an unfinished basement in Tom Nevers, I was unwinding a roll of wire mesh for the cement. A narrow rod, six inches long pierced me below the temple and emerged just below my other ear, and I fell. When I woke up, I was alone in the dark. I tried to sit up, but felt a pain. I could not speak. I could not shout. I was not bleeding as far as I could tell, but something was wrong. When I felt my head, I sensed it. The pain overwhelmed me and I fell back. When I awoke again, I saw a man in a gray hood. He was unshaved, but I could see nothing else. He extended his finger to me and indicated for me to follow him.” “I did not. Instead, I pulled the metal out of my skull and fell onto the floor again.” “I do not know what happened after that. I am told that I was placed in a car, raced to the hospital, and then flown off-island. When I finally resurfaced, I was in a hospital room in Boston. I was in that room for three months. And in that time, I was visited by the figure in the hoodie twice.” “When I was finally released from the hospital, I returned to my father’s house in Kansas. He cared for me and saw that I had the therapies I needed. He needed to unretire and return to active service, but he saw me through.

clothing, jewelry & accessories open daily 508 228 3227 BlueBeetleNantucket.com When I drove out to G.S. Hill’s home studio recently, it was a beautiful June day on Nantucket: warm with a light fog that muted sunshine and softened edges. As I walked across their lawn bordered by blueberry bushes and wild grapes that slopes gently down to a pond filled with fish, frogs, and turtles, I could see how the natural beauty surrounding his home must inspire this Nantucket painter. Widely known and internationally collected, Gregory Hill has been devoting his time recently to new Nantucket paintings. The day we spoke, he was putting finishing touches on Tranquility II, his largest oil on linen to date at 80 inches wide and 40 inches tall. The scene is one of Greg’s favorites and depicts a view he enjoys nearly every day from his downtown studio: looking toward Brant Point Lighthouse from Straight Wharf. “I love the scene,” he commented, “it tells so much of the story of Nantucket and the island’s history.” He explained the scene as he painted in touches to a sail and light to a reflection: “it’s morning—the fog is burning off and it’s going to be a beautiful day.” Greg has been working on the canvas for about a month: once he finishes adding detail and light, depth and richness, he’ll move this new painting to the G.S. Hill Gallery at 40 Straight Wharf. Stop by this week to see Tranquility II finished and framed. — by Suzanne Daub

A Look Back at Shearing Festivals of the Past Whaling made Nantucket one of the busiest ports in the world during the 1800s, but the men who first settled the island were not seafarers. Their primary endeavors were pastoral, and raising sheep became their first industry. The early settlers’ interest in sheep husbandry is evident even in the way they divided, or rather did not divide, the island heathland. After land was granted for homesteads, the remainder of Nantucket was kept as an open pasture held in common by the settlers. But not everyone had an equal share. The ten original purchasers of Nantucket held a meeting on the mainland in 1659 during which they chose ten partners; these men were the “Twenty First Purchasers.” Subsequently, in order to induce craftsmen to join their venture, these twenty men offered half-shares to fourteen artisans. Therefore, in Nantucket’s early days there were 27 shares (20 full shares and 14 half shares) holding the common land. Originally each share was made up of 720 “sheep commons,” one sheep common being equal to the 1-1/2 acres needed to pasture one sheep. Each shareholder was permitted only the number of animals that his share of the common land could support: four geese for every sheep common, one sheep per common, one cow for every eight sheep commons, and one horse for every sixteen sheep commons. All the shareholders’ animals grazed together on the heath, distinguished only by earmarks. The sheep were left virtually untended all winter long. Often the animals wandered into town, pestering residents. If a door was left open, a sheep would walk right into the house. There’s an account of one prisoner in the Town Gaol who sent word to the jailer if he did not mend the wall to keep the sheep out, he was going home. Each winter sheep were lost: buried in snowdrifts or pushed into the sea during a fierce storm. The winter of 1779-1780 was especially severe, and over half the sheep and many lambs perished. The deprivation of the Revolutionary War years reduced the number of sheep on Nantucket from about 10,000 in 1775 to 3,000 in 1784. By 1800 the flock had recovered to 16,000, but again diminished to about 8500, in part because of the dissolution of the common land system. From the mid-1800s on, the number of sheep on Nantucket declined partially in response to increased supplies of mutton from the west combined with a poor market for wool on the mainland. But from the late 1600s through the early 1800s there were plenty of sheep on Nantucket, and they had to be shorn. The annual sheep shearing was one of
the few opportunities to combine hard labor with celebration, and the Sheep Shearing Festival soon became an early summer event that even off-islanders came to enjoy. The Shearing Festivals were always held the Monday and Tuesday closest to June 20. The first recorded shearing holiday took place in 1696, the last in 1847. At one time there were so many sheep here that two shearing pens were required—one in the east at Gibb’s Pond and the other in the west at Maxy’s Pond in an enormous enclosure that accomodated both the east and west flocks. The sheep pen used during shearing was comprised of circular fences in a sort of labyrinth with the pens of individual owners located around the exterior circle. A clerk and assistants identified sheep as the pens were filled, and an account was kept of every man’s stock. Friday and Saturday before the festival the sheep were rounded up, separated from the lambs, and thoroughly washed in a nearby pond. Sunday they dried in their respective shear pens, and Monday the festivities began People came from across the island to attend the Shearing Festival; some walked, some rode, and a good number came in “tip carts.” These carts were twowheeled vehicles in which the driver stood, the adult passengers rode sitting in house chairs, and the children stood in the back hanging onto ropes to keep from falling out. Families put up tents around the shear pen in which the women assembled the day’s feast that often included roast pig, oysters, home-brewed cinnamon beer, three-cornered shearing buns, pies, and cakes. There were stands to sell baked goods and preserves. Many of the shearers traveled from off-island and could take a fleece in less than ten minutes. Some of the sheep were quite wild from roaming the heath, and sometimes came close to injuring the shearer. There was music and dancing as well as games. All other work stopped for the festival. The Nantucket Inquirer reported before one shearing: “The orgies of the mutton-worshippers are beginning to burst forth, and all the wooly world is in an agony of helter-skelterishness...Consequence is, no paper next Saturday.” The Annual Shearing Festival lasted Monday and Tuesday, and then the sheep were released to again wander the commons and the Nantucketers went back to work until the following June signalled the return of the feasting and celebration.

Her Second Time on Easy Street from page 4 of life, for heirloom pieces, and as special gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. She specializes in beautiful jewelry that is fun to wear and designed to be enjoyed. Born in Boston and raised along the coast of Rhode Island, Susan has always adored the sea—it is an inspiration for many of her jewelry designs. “The sea is mysterious, serene, powerful… it’s always changing… it’s magical in its beauty and splendor.” All of nature is reflected in her pendants, rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, charms, and cufflinks in their colors, patterns, and organic shapes. Susan is known for creating elegant settings for exceptional gemstones. As have many, Susan first came to Nantucket on a family vacation. “We loved it! I came back when I was in my early 20s and loved the beaches, the small town village aspect, the architecture, and the fun vibe…I ended up marrying into the family who owned The Country Store and within a few years was running their Nantucket store in the 1970s.” After a time off-island, she returned to Nantucket in the early 1990s to start a new chapter in her life: a chapter that would allow her to nurture her creativity. “From the time I was a little kid, I would always draw and doodle, and I loved portraiture. When I came back, I thought I’d do that, so I took an oil painting class with Paul Longenecker…that first winter back, I didn’t know what else I was going to do to stay busy, so I took a jewelry class. I made rings for myself and for each of my daughters. People saw us wearing them and tried to buy them off our fingers…I thought ‘I should pay attention to this and take another jewelry class!” As a single mother with two daughters to educate, Susan spent some time considering options. “I made lists… what interests me, what I’m good at, what I’m not good at, what

do I need, what do I like… I wanted to keep my art alive and stay creative, but I also had my daughters to think of…” This led Susan to a career in real estate on-island that gave her ample time and the freedom to pursue her art and continue to take jewelry classes here and in Italy. After a few years, “I shifted back to jewelry. I opened this shop nine years ago, when I was 69 year old… It’s my second time on Easy Street!” Susan Lister Locke Jewelers at 28 Easy Street is filled with jewelry that shimmers, sparkles, glistens, and glimmers—from fine, delicate pieces to bold, organic shapes. Much of the gold and silver has textures and patterns reminiscent of nature. Susan creates everything in her shop: “Some of it I make part of; some of it I make all of; and all of it I design.” Many of her pieces have an organic appeal, and she emphasizes that each piece is both pretty and wearable: “this is jewelry to be worn and enjoyed, not to be left in a vault.” She primarily uses 18k yellow gold with an exclusive alloy that gives it a rich tone to beautifully accent the stones. And what stones they are! Each one is vibrant in color, internationally sourced, and very high-quality. Color, shape, size…the gemstones influence the design. “My dealers send me gems of a quality and color they think I will like. When they arrive, I lay them out, and they guide me.” Susan particularly likes working with aquamarines, sapphires, mint tourmaline, South Sea and Tahitian pearls. Some of the stones she uses are more rare than diamonds, like the Paraiba Tourmaline that is one of her favorites: “it glows like phosphorescence at the beach… like it’s lit from within.” Many clients come to Susan for custom engagement and wedding rings: they want something unique that will be treasured. Though in most of her pieces she uses diamonds just as accents, she does source them for these rings. She continued on page 18

Cape Verde in Our Soul
Expanding on a previous NHA display, Shoulders Upon Which We Stand, which explored the Cape Verde-Nantucket connection, this season the Nantucket Historical Association is presenting historic photos, mementos, and a mini-theater with short films based on recently conducted oral histories from Nantucket’s Cape Verde community. The Cape Verde archipelago off the coast of Senegal has a long history of association with Nantucket Island. It was once a major hub of the transatlantic slave trade, which contributed to its mixed European and African heritage. Cape Verdeans and Nantucketers first laid eyes on each other during the whaling days of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Whaling ships from America stopped at the Cape Verde islands for supplies and, very often, to augment their crews. Surviving crew lists document this common practice. A fraction of those crewmen found their way back to Nantucket and became part of the Nantucket community. However, the most significant “diaspora” of Cape Verdeans arriving on Nantucket occurred during the early twentieth century, when Cape Verdean immigrants looking for better lives arrived in New Bedford and were drawn to Nantucket to work in the commercial cranberry bogs. As they became established, Cape Verdeans found homes close to Nantucket’s waterfront and in the vicinity of Five Corners. They were a community of hardworking, industrious people, soon looking beyond the bogs and taking on all manner of employment, some starting their own businesses. Their Cape Verdean traditions taught them to offer help to anyone in need within and beyond their families and neighborhood. Music, celebration, and keeping a large pot of jagacida on the stove to feed all who dropped by were characteristic of their heritage. Despite their generous nature, Cape Verdean Nantucketers experienced discrimination, both subtle and explicit, based on their skin color and foreign origin. While diminished in numbers from early days, the Nantucket Cape Verdean community today is made up of significant contributors to education, health care, service to the community, government, business, trades, music, and cuisine. They are a microcosm of the best of Nantucket’s community spirit, subtly proud of their Cape Verde heritage. The NHA looks is proud to present many of their stories in the Nantucket Whaling Museum Williams Forsyth Gallery, 13 Broad Street.

Paradise for Fireflies
NANTUCKET

such as pheromones (chemical signals). We may continue to see fireflies earlier and earlier in the coming decade. A warming climate leads to fireflies, along with many other insects, appearing earlier in the year than was previously normal. Fireflies and many other insects are especially good indicators of regional climate change because they are so in sync with their environment. A 2016 study looked at how climate change can affect firefly populations. The study revealed that the warmer springs predicted by climate change would mean an earlier firefly peak, but only if rainfall remains the same. Weather not only plays a role in how soon you’ll see lightning bug flashes but how many flashes, too. On warm and humid evenings, it’ll be like a firefly disco party with lots of flashes. Conversely, on cooler nights when air temperatures take a dip into the 50s, it may take longer to see even a single flash. Why is this? Fireflies, like most insects, are cold-blooded (they depend on heat from their surrounding environment to help them function), so their activity peaks when temperatures rise and slows when temperatures drop. After seeing declines in firefly numbers several years ago, the past few years have seen increases in populations throughout the northeast. Combinations of weather and more people looking and recording may be one explanation. Even if some areas have seen more beetles in their light shows, many areas globally are recording decreases in firefly abundance and disappearances for some populations. In addition to changes seen with climate change, other factors play a role in potential population declines in certain areas. Dr. Sara Lewis from Tufts University and colleagues published a 2020 paper which was the first systematic review of threats to fireflies. First, habitat loss due to development and agricultural turnover mean fewer places for fireflies to survive. Fireflies need marshes and meadows to live in and illuminate. Adults often cannot fly far—and in some species may not fly at all—so they struggle to move if their habitat is threatened. Many species also have specialized diets, so they can starve if their food supply is lost.

Bioluminescent species (including fireflies) that communicate via glowing lures, warning signals, or courtship advertisements may have their signals obscured by artificial lights, unless the added light is spectrally tuned to reduce its impact. Fireflies need darkness to light up and find love, because bioluminescence is needed for reproduction. Males attract mates with their glowing butts. They need darkness to signal each other. Research with the USDA has shown that broad-spectrum white light inhibits the production of courtship advertisements by male firefly beetles. Dark skies are diminishing especially in highly populated areas in the northeast. Nantucket’s dark skies initiative, Nantucket Lights, works to preserve our dark nights. We may be seeing more fireflies on-island because of these efforts, but this may be one of the few refuges. The use of broad-spectrum pesticides also creates challenges for the glowing insects. That’s because adults only survive for a few weeks, just in time to mate. They spend most of their time in the ground as larvae eating slugs and snails before coming out of the ground and lighting up. Pesticides soaking into the ground take a toll. For those interested in preserving Nantucket’s natural light show, Dr. Lewis has some sound advice. First, she says, “If there’s a place with firefly biodiversity or abundance, try to preserve that habitat.” Not all of us have that ability, but anyone can reduce light pollution. “Turn off your lights during firefly season, or just turn off your lights in general. Have motion-detector lights that only come on when you need them.” And reduce the use of pesticides. This last one would benefit a whole host of beneficial insects.

“After several years there, I progressed a great deal from my injury. I was healthier, stronger, I had put on weight, and I could even drive. And I saw the figure for the last time. “I had pulled up to a red light in my father’s county squire. The figure stood on a corner opposite, turned his darkened hood my way and pointed at me. And I froze. I was no longer in a hospital, peering into the abyss. I was not on a cement floor with a blade of metal transfixed in my skull. I was in a car, at a red light, in Kansas.” “I did not move. I looked both ways at the still traffic, I looked up for falling planes, I looked behind me at the honking cars. Then I inched forward. I knew I was going to die, right then. I inched forward until I had extended into the intersection. He watched as he floated two inches off the ground.” “And, for some reason I don’t know, the idea came up in my head, and I spoke it. I said ‘thank you.’ The weight lifted, the panic left me, and I accelerated and drove home. I lay on my father’s sofa, soaked in sweat, and said the words a thousand times.” He paused then, and he smiled at us. He apologized for preventing us from getting ice cream. The Sconset Market had closed, and our cars were the only ones left in the small lot. The fog remained as thick as ever. The light cast rays in it. “I have heard him mentioned by six other people. Some have seen him skiing, some in the hospital, some on a boat with a fish on the line. They survived, obviously, as I have. I don’t know what he is. But I am grateful.” We said our thanks and made our apologies. The night was late, we had people to see, and we appreciated his time. Then we came back to town by way of the Polpis Road. By the time we returned to the evening before all of the weddings, his story had retreated and I had remembered most of the first stanzas of the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It did not take long to corroborate the mundane parts of the story. The accident was well-known, as was his father, as was the tale. The moral, less so. frictionless struggles in a fog. They came without signal or signaler and disappeared almost as fast. While I have yet to have a piece of wire transfix my temple, my situations could also have had permanent and cooling results. No such man has visited me. And yet, those words frame the best prayer we can utter. In the wash of change on this island, when familiar faces leave and unfamiliar ones arrive, and the future of this small community out in the Atlantic has been cashed out, it’s worth saying a “thank you” to the man in the hood. On a day like today, when the rain drips and the wind blows us all into sweaters and polar fleece, we can still sit on a bench on Main Street, drink a cup of coffee, watch the wedding guests head home, and marvel at the couples that are holding hands. We live in a special place at a special time, for as long as the man in the gray hood lets us stay. (Some details have been changed from the original story.)
