Sidewalk Art Show This Saturday, July 3
The Artists Association of Nantucket’s popular Sidewalk Art Show will be held this week at their Visual Art Center at 24 Amelia Drive. On Saturday, July 3, from 9 am to 2 pm, more than twenty AAN artist members will be available to discuss art and sell their works in the dappled summer sun. The outdoor art show is free and open to the public. Rain date is Sunday, July 4, same times. Founded in 1930 by artist Maud Stumm, Nantucket’s Sidewalk Art Show is the oldest in the nation. Originally held for a few days in August, it was open to both professionals and amateurs. “In 1960 AAN took the reins of the event and it is now one of our signature offerings, and we are proud to be part of such a historic and popular island tradition,” said AAN artistic director Robert Frazier. “It predates the Artists Association by fifteen years.” In her book, From Clotheslines to Canopies: A History of Outdoor Art Fairs in America, Kathleen Eaton states “the earliest art fairs of record in America that are still in operation began during the start of the Great Depression. The first, founded in 1930, was the Nantucket Sidewalk Art Show—a small local event based on similar street fairs found in Europe.” “Last year we had to pivot given the Covid 19 situation, so we used the green space at our Visual Arts Center and it worked quite well, thus this season we will be holding both our shows there again,” said Frazier. “Still going strong ninetyone years later, the Sidewalk Show is a great way to meet some of the island’s local artists, who will be pleased to discuss their art and explain their work techniques,” added Frazier. The Artists Association July Sidewalk Art Show this Saturday at the Visual Arts Center is free and open to the public. The next Art Show is planned for Saturday, August 14, also at the VAC at 24 Amelia Drive. To learn more about the AAN, visit the new website at nantucketarts.org. My first summer on Nantucket, in 1998 as a Maria Mitchell Association intern, was a magical experience for many reasons. Not the least of which was my first time to the beach at night. I will never forget the excitement of riding my bike in the dark with the other interns to catch a glimpse of the Perseid Meteor Shower one August summer night. Before I even saw one shooting star, I remember the awe-inspiring moment of looking up and seeing a sky full of bright twinkly stars. In a place like Nantucket, on this tiny island in the sea, the sky seems to go on forever into the ocean. Forget the sunsets that people “oooh and awe” about. The night sky of Nantucket is where the real show is! People often remark that the island seems to have more stars than anywhere else. In reality, you can often see more stars and planets here than anywhere else. And have you ever seen the Milky Way from the beach or from the top of Altar Rock? It’s a sight not soon forgotten. The reason for all of this celestial magic? Dark skies. Nantucket’s isolation, vast amounts of undeveloped open space, and historic restrictions have made it an ideal sport for those seeking dark skies. In recent years, however, dark skies are diminishing as we see a rise in light pollution locally. Primarily, light pollution has been seen in cities and towns where street lights, neon signs, and other bright lights blur the dark skies. That may have seemed like something far away from Nantucket, 30 miles out to sea, but now light pollution on Nantucket has increased 2.4% each year since 2012 (according to satellite data). That means that there is about 22% more light pollution today than just nine years ago. A new citizen advocacy group called Nantucket Lights aims to do something about that. With a diverse steering committee that includes year-round as well as seasonal residents, its mission is to preserve and protect Nantucket’s nighttime environment and heritage of dark skies by raising awareness about light pollution on the island and advocating for environmentally responsible outdoor lighting. Its recently launched website — nantucketlights.org — is intended to serve as a resource for the community. It includes information about light pollution continued on page 12

There’s only one of them in the country, and it’s right here on Nantucket Island. Kyle Housman visited our island every summer as child, bicycling out to Surfside with his parents and enjoying the natural beauty here. Decades later, when he decided in 2018 to open the first store in the USA for his Vancouverbased company Native Shoes, he knew Nantucket was the perfect fit.
Native Shoes are comfortable and durable, with simple, modern design that suits all ages. Ideal for island life — boating, fishing, going to the beach, outfitting kids for summer camp — the shoes are constructed with materials that are lightcontinued on page 10

The Gift of Privilege
Sail Endeavor
by Robert P. Barsanti
She parked her dented pickup in the loading zone for the Hy-Line. Then, she left it with her friend and her luggage. Her landscaper’s pickup truck, redolent of hydrangea and dirt, sat half in traffic, half in the loading zone while a row of cars built up behind her. The rest of us had luggage to drop off, people to bid farewell, and business to conduct. But we were stuck behind her. After a polite few minutes allowing for good-hearted confusion, I got out of my car and started poking about. She had left her iPhone and her latte on the seat, and a large set of feathery keys dangled from the ignition. At ten minutes, politeness ended and I opened the driver’s door. At eleven minutes, the driver came running. She was young, she was blond, she was upset. “I had to see my friend off.” It must be nice. It must be nice to be young and blond and absolutely sure that you can park in the middle of the street if you feel you must. The privilege of youth is that age must make way for you. The privilege of age is to make it difficult. The word “privilege” gets heaved about like a brick; it’s a slur that bruises, falls at your feet, and begs to be thrown back into someone’s smirking face. When you smear the word on someone, you mark them as undeserving and unaware. Good fortune did not come from hard work, diligence, or shrewd good sense, but from luck, bias, and Daddy’s wallet. In the words of a wise woman, “it must be nice…” to have those advantages. I think of those words a lot in June. The school year has collapsed into a heap and the students have tip-toed away and shut off their cameras. The principal has asked for my keys and will not let me back into the building until September. For my entire professional life, I have been able to take my watch off in June, drop it into the desk, and proclaim it “Summertime.” To me, June has always come with a cleansing breath after the grades are turned in, the flags rolled, and the doors locked. It must be nice…and it is. It means I can have a summer of beaches, boys, and beers continued on page 21

When US Presidents Visited Nantucket
Nantucket has been a favorite vacation spot for well over a century. With today’s high-speed ferries and commercial flights to Nantucket, it’s much easier to reach our Faraway Isle, but the challenge of getting here did not stop visitors during the 19th and 20th centuries—in fact, it was an appealing aspect to Nantucket. There was a summer Actors’ Colony in Siasconset from the mid-1800s

visited Nantucket Island since 1835. John Quincy Adams, our 6th president who served from 1825-1829, visited in September of 1835, when he and his son spent an afternoon on-island with James Athearn. They spent one night in a hotel on Main Street called Washington House that was owned by Athearn and run by Elisha Starbuck, town sheriff. According to the diary of his son, who described the hotel as “a very indifferent one kept by a man named Starbuck.” The next night they stayed at lodgings offered by Betsey Cary in Siasconset. Charles Francis Adams had a good report of what they found here: “We returned to the neat inn where we had ordered dinner...The dinner was neat and composed of Nantucket dishes – chicken chowder, pumpkins dressed in the shell and corn puddings. Fish could not be procured in time. The neatness of everything was remarkable.” Ulysses S. Grant, our 18th president who served from 1869-1877, visited Nantucket in August of 1874. He arrived at about 9 am August 28 on the steamship River Queen, and disembarked at about 10 am to enthusiastic cheers. The Inquirer

They are hand-washable and come in a wide range of colors and styles including walking shoes, sandals, and slip-on mules from toddler sizes to mens 13. The shop on Straight Wharf even has an exclusive Nantucket Collection: designs that are available nowhere else. And the company, with their shoes and their activism, are helping the planet. Retail manager Beth Lloyd-Thomas sat down with me recently to explain how Native Shoes—the company and the products— “make it easy to live lightly.” Two of the top company goals of Native Shoes are to do the right thing and to practice “tiny activism,” which they aptly describe as “creating a better world one tiny step at a time.” They encourage innovative ideas (“ask more what ifs”), and although they are serious about their endeavors, they don’t want to take themselves too seriously. This environmentally aware company is doing all they can “to have less of a footprint on our world,” Beth explained. They are seriously pursuing the goal for the company to become 100% lifecycle managed by 2023. The same year Native Shoes opened their store on Nantucket, they also introduced their Remix™ Project, which is now the brand’s flagship sustainability initiative. Through a proprietary regrind process, the unique composition of Native Shoes is transformed into a versatile and colorful material that can — and is — being used in the creation of comfortable seating,

bouncy playground flooring, insulation, and other products recycle used Native Shoes. In the past four years, more than 35,000 shoes have been converted to help in the construction of five new playgrounds. On Saturday, August 14, Beth will be hosting a community-wide event at the Nantucket store, where people are invited to bring their old shoes — all shoes — to be recycled and get a 10% off coupon on a new pair. In 2019, Native Shoes launched another innovative program to help the environment called Bloom. This involves a new manufacturing process called Rise Technology that incorporates repurposed toxic algae swept from lakes and freshwater ecosystems into the lightweight EVA upper of shoes in their Bloom Collection. The effect is to clean up to 80L of water and 50m3 of air per pair! Not only can customers feel good about buying Native Shoes—Native Shoes feel good! Comfortable, lightweight, and breathable, they’re ideal for summer fun. As Beth commented, Native Shoes “are happiest by the water.” Kids love the Jefferson style, which looks like a sneaker and comes in dozens of fun colors and patterns. The Stars & Stripes Jeffersons (one blue shoe with white stars and the other sporting red-and-white stripes) are very popular, particularly during July! Also sized for adults, the Jefferson is a Native Shoes classic and is also available as Jefferson Bloom, made with the company’s Rise by Bloom technology. the process. “Nantucket’s dark skies are one of its most precious natural resources. Every summer, I hear the excited exclamations of hundreds of visitors who come out to a public Open Night at the Maria Mitchell’s Loines Observatory and see the Milky Way for the first time in their lives. This unique experience wouldn’t be possible without the concerted, island-wide efforts to preserve our dark skies,” said Dr. Regina Jorgenson, Maria Mitchell Asssociation Director of Astronomy. Light pollution has also been shown to greatly affect wildlife. All animals, including humans, need darkness at night to thrive. Many animals eat, mate, and/or migrate at night. These patterns can be disrupted harming populations. In addition to disrupting circadian rhythms, excessive artificial light at night can also disorient birds during migration. Studies have shown that some bird species will cluster around brightly lit structures, much like insects flying around a porch light at night. Sea turtle hatchlings, migrating insects, amphibian calls, and even coral reefs are affected by light pollution. Excessive light at night has also been shown to interfere with fireflies who use visual light cues (as well as pheromones) during mating season. More lights equal fewer fireflies. As development increases around the island, so do concerns about furthering the light pollution issue. “I see this as one more thing that people need to be educated on to either put lights on timers, or motion sensors, use lighting with lower emissions, or just shut them off entirely, “says Danielle O’Dell, Nantucket Lights steering committee member. “We all have to really start implementing changes to our habits to lessen our impact on the planet. Every little change counts.” One item of upcoming concern for Nantucket Lights is balancing the need for efficient energy consumption and dark skies. If the streetlights on Nantucket are converted to LED to save energy and cut the Town's electricity costs, will they be dark-sky friendly? Nantucket Lights hopes to be an advocacy group to help ensure that best practices are followed. Nantucket Lights, which is entirely non-profit and volunteer-run, hopes many more like-minded people will join them to show their support for its mission and help it achieve its goals. For more information about joining this initiative, how to make sure your home and business is dark-sky friendly, and other ways to help, go to nantucketlights.org. Right now, there are still places free of light pollution on-island. Working together, educating ourselves and each other about light pollution, and changing our everyday habits will help ensure our dark future.

while others scoop ice cream, drive Ubers, and listen, patiently, when the customer tells you “The wine is insufficiently chilled.” And it must be nice to have a life on Nantucket. It must be nice to have more work than your phone can hold, get paid a king’s ransom to mow lawns and paint walls, then end the day wetting a line at Nobadeer. It must be nice to watch the sunset over the Atlantic, with hot coals in the grill, cold beers in the ice, and something big tugging on the line. It’s a privilege to watch the boat leave. Like all privileges, it came as a result of any number of fortunate and lucky events combined with a bit of pluck, hard work, and skill. I don’t want to admit that something other than the sweat on my brow brought me to this beach, these grilling shrimp, and this fishing line. I would like to believe that I deserve this, as if some great beneficent God had passed judgement, found me worthy, and gifted me with this evening at Nobadeer. I am sure that my blond friend near the Hy-Line feels the same way. All of us stand on the shoulders of others. Some of them preserved much of this island so as to make it more valuable. Some fought in wars, foreign and domestic, to insure that we were not serving some tyrant or another. Some marched and organized and brought the working conditions that we enjoy right now. And millions were brought and born into slavery, lived and suffered under tremendous pain, died, and carried us to this place. On the Fourth of July, we can’t pick and choose our forebears. We can’t pretend that Washington and Jefferson did not own slaves, nor can we pretend that they didn’t show bravery, wisdom, and skill. Like ourselves, the figures of history are complicated, conflicted, and contested. If we have to be honest about our own American privilege, we have to be honest about the murderous, painful, and heroic past that led us to this sunset beach. The blood and treasure have long been hidden, but they remain. The greatest privilege of being an American is not what was done in the past but what can happen in the future. We are a nation built on an idea that keeps changing and becoming a more perfect union. The privilege of age is to know what brought us here. The privilege of youth is to take us forward. To be an American is to be in a constant state of developing. We don’t know what we will be, but we know what we were. At the high school graduation, the island conferred onto its children the privilege of Nantucket. It surrounded them with love and support, even in the fading fire of the pandemic. Speeches were given, songs were sung, and caps were flown. Then we gave them $700,000 in scholarships. Far too many of those memorial scholarships bear the names of people I knew well: Pignato, Gardner, Gordon, Diamond, Fee. All of those people believed in the promise of what America, and Nantucket, could be. They all believed in a more perfect union; not as it was, but as it would become. This money will give the young of Nantucket the privilege of attending the best schools without onerous loans and difficult decisions. It must be nice. Privilege comes with an expectation from the dead. Silently, but constantly, they mutter “To whom much is given, much is expected.” America is always for the young. It will bend to their wishes, their commands, and their votes. They must make their country better than the one we gave them. We all have received a gift of privilege, but what matters is what we make of it.

Arthur left that evening at 5 pm. Benjamin Harrison, our 23rd president who served from 1889-1893, visited Nantucket in August of 1890. President Harrison traveled to Nantucket aboard the naval flagship Baltimore and arrived unannounced. According to the Presidential Issue of the Nantucket Historical Association’s publication Historic Nantucket (December 2010): “Early risers on the Cliff...when they looked out upon the waters of the sound, were greeted with a spectable that is very unusual in these parts... as the fog lifted the glistening sides of the flagship Baltimore, with her formidable guns pointing shoreward were recognized. “The news spread like wildfire through the town, and ealry in the forenoon Steamboat Wharf bore more the appearance of a holiday than of the Sabbath. Boats were eagerly sought, and the harbor presented a lively aspect, the little catboats spinning out under a stiff breeze with curious crowds...Shortly after noon the President…came on shore, and…took a short drive about town, and then to Siasconset, where a call was made at the residence of Senator Spooner.” Woodrow Wilson, our 28th president who served from 1913-1921, visited Nantucket in September of 1917. He was traveling aboard the presidential yacht Mayflower with his wife. They visited Nantucket to see their grandchildren and daughter, Frances B. Sayre, who had a summer cottage in Siasconset. The Nantucket School Superintendent dismissed students early that day to see the president. The president and his entourage departed from the Athletic Club pier at about 10 pm, where crowds gave him a “rousing ovation.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt, our 32nd president who served from 1933-1945, anchored his yacht Amberjack II in Nantucket Harbor in June of 1933, when his cruise to his summer home in Campobello was rerouted due to a storm. President Roosevelt did not come ashore, but his son James did and toured the Whaling Museum. John F. Kennedy, our 35th president who served from 1961-1963, also did not

set foot on our island in 1963 when his presidential yacht Honey Fitz anchored here. His children John and Caroline came ashore with Secret Service, and they toured the Whaling Museum and stopped for ice cream. William Jefferson Clinton, our 42th president who served from 1993-2001, visited Nantucket in August of 1999, when they came to the home of Bob Matthews and attended a fundraiser for Hilary Clinton’s campaign for U.S. Senate held at the Bagley home. President Donald Trump, our 45th president, 2017-2021, visited in 2016 for a campaign fundraiser. President Joseph Robinette Biden, our 46th president elected in 2021, has visited Nantucket with his family nearly every Thanksgiving since 1975. For many of those years, Biden (then Senator Biden or Vice President Biden) attended the Nantucket Tree Lighting on Main Street and participated in the Cold Turkey Plunge fundraiser for the Nantucket Atheneum at Children’s Beach.

Featured Restaurant: Fifty-Six Union
Final Weeks for Fun at Fifty-Six by Carl Oscar Olson As the saying goes, “nothing good ever lasts,“ and this is especially true for many of Nantucket’s much-loved eateries. Leases run out, head chefs move on, or it simply comes time to retire from it all. If you’ve never dined with some of our favorite islanders at one of our favorite locations, the time is now to head just out of town to Fifty-Six Union. After 22 memorable years of serving the island community, Wendy and Peter Jannelle are closing the doors to their 56 Union Street restaurant and turning the page onto a new chapter. A family affair for more than two decades, the Jannelles have quite the story to tell. Peter graduated from The Culinary Institute of America in 1978 and went to work on the Holland America Lines, and his travels around the world helped inspire the myriad of flavors on his menu today. From there he took a job as Chef de Cuisine at an establishment of yesteryear, The India House, where he met Wendy, his long-time partner in life and business. From there the pair worked in some of the best kitchens and dining rooms on the island. Their two sons are also part of the team, with chef-at-heart Andrew manning the line and Blair
keeping eyes on the front of the house. There are simply so many reasons why we will always love FiftySix, from Wendy’s warm greeting to Chef Peter’s global cuisine, the combination of which makes us feel right at home while traveling the world. Wendy’s wine list mixed with bartender Evan’s cocktail creations make for a perfect pairing The Wedge before, during, and after your dinner. With our refreshments in hand, fresh, warm rolls were delivered to our plates. Crusty and chewy outside but so fluffy within, a pat of soft, sweet cream butter made them the perfect start to our culinary adventure on Union Street. We watched and waited, taking in the beauty of our outdoor dining area and garden, for our starters to make their way to our table. A salad to start things off, The Wedge simply defines this classic. Half a head of baby iceberg lettuce is quartered and well dressed with a stunning bleu cheese dressing, then piled with salty crisp bacon Clams Casino bits. It’s cool and crisp, creamy and crunchy all in one bite. We found a favorite bar snack elevated to new heights in the Clams Casino. Littleneck clams mingle with herbed casino butter and a smoky bit of bacon, a squeeze of lemon bought a brighter dimension. With eight on a plate they’re sized to share, but we sure didn’t want to. We’ll be in a pinch trying to find a better Crab Cake than the one served at Fifty-Six. A crispy crust from the light breading crackles in every bite of Jonah and Crab Cake lump crab, while the flavor of bell

peppers and scallions still make themselves known. The gleaming lobster americaine sauce underneath is brimming with complexity and just enough cayenne for a warming kick. A long-time favorite and a meal in itself, Chef Jannelle’s Curried Mussels are a Fifty-Six standard. A Curried Mussels symphony of spice and seasonings with just enough sizzle, the dish piled high with the beautiful black bivalves in the creamiest curry imaginable. Have the rice in between bites or dip in some of the chef’s famous Truffled Frites (if you haven’t devoured them all). Or savor it as soup when the mussels are gone. The restaurant not only boasts plenty of parking but four fantastic dining areas all with their own moods . The “front room” is the largest and liveliest area and provides a social setting with the bar within reach, while the “back room” is a calming escape for Eggplant Involtini families with children or those looking for a quieter outing. Roomy and accommodating of parties of all sizes, the “patio,” our favorite spot, brings the outside in with an awning and removable wall coverings as well as heaters and blankets to keep you cozy on those cooler evenings. Finally, situated under a private cabana, the coveted Table 56 is a must-try dining experience. Enjoy a quiet night out in the garden with friends, family, or any large group gathering of 6 or more (book well in advance!) for a night to remember. Pan Seared Halibut Our waitress, Ali,

Grilled Pork Chop was prompt and on point with clearing our dishes just in time for our entrees to arrive. Though it’s a vegetarian option, the Eggplant Involtini is so full flavored and filling you might never know it. This sampling of summer vegetables baked to order in an au gratin dish, is piping hot and served with a slice of crusty, buttery bread. Under the browned and bubbling blend of parmesan and provolone awaits eggplant, bell pepper, spinach, and ricotta in a rich Tuscan tomato sauce. We could see the succulence when presented with the Grilled Pork Chop. A hearty 10 ounces and Frenched, it’s rich char gave way to glistening juiciness while the rosemary demi-glace soaked right into the buttery herbed potato gnocchi. Haricot Vert were the perfect accompaniment. There is almost always a special or two on the menu, so be sure to ask your server. The night we dined, Seared Salmon was the one, and we’d have been foolish to pass
Seared Salmon it up. The fish was meaty and incredibly moist, the kind we all wish we could cook at home. Touches of heat from a coarse crack of black pepper ties in with the minted pineapple coulis, while a side of finely diced carrots, red onion, and pepper were as light as the lentils they mingled with. Our hands-down favorite dish of the night was the Pan Seared Halibut. A crisp pecan crust revealed brilliant white fish atop al dente forbidden rice. Crisp corn adds a sweet note that goes well with honey-mustardy sauce circling the plate while verdant, vegetal asparagus rounds out the dish. You might not have known it, but dessert is a part of dinner at Fifty-Six Union, continued on page 28

with lots we love to revisit and always a few new sweets to sample. The Lemoncello Creme Brûlée will prove the purists wrong with just a touch of citrus wrapped in the impeccably light and creamy classic. The crackling crisp of toasted sugar on top passes the spoon test every time. The Gelato Cookie Sandwich brings out the kid in all of us. This rustic, homemade classic combines chunks of chocolate, walnuts, and pretzels together with a salted caramel or dark chocolate gelato. We loved the salty pops from pretzel throughout every bite. This option changes a few times throughout the season and we can’t wait to see what’s next. Our all time favorite finale at Fifty Six, Strawberry and Blueberry Shortcake, is a Nantucket summertime staple. The shortcake is enhanced with the unmistakeable essence of orange while fresh summer strawberries and blueberries shine under peaks of whipped cream. This one is an ode to summer and the best epilogue to a summertime dinner. This won’t be our last trip to 56 Union Street this summer, and though the island will be a poorer place without the love served up nightly at Fifty-Six, we thank Wendy and Peter for their years of hard work. As Wendy puts it, “The support from the community over the last 22 years has been overwhelming. We were able to live our dream of owning and operating a restaurant on Nantucket, and we are grateful to have a planned exit.” Thanks for the memories!

Leave only footprints...
Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
