Nantucket by Design Goes Virtual & Global

July 30-August 5, 2020

Three days this week—Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—the Nantucket Historical Association will light up the internet with a vibrant virtual event that embodies the creativity and passion of design. Nantucket by Design is the NHA’s major summer fundraiser, and for 2020, their all-star slate of luminaries includes Alessandra Branca, Meg Braff, Richard Keith Langham, Young Huh, and Ellen Fisher. In its fifth year, Nantucket by Design celebrates the island's unique influence on American Design. Now open to a global audience, this year’s phenomenon brings together the world’s top talent in interior design and offers curated lectures, discussion panels, house tours, an in-depth look into the NHA archives, and the imaginative work of New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) students as they bring modern day life into NHA historical properties. Participants will enjoy virtual private dinners, a Night at the Museum virtual dance party, and The Nantucket Summer Antiques Show all through live-streaming platforms. Most importantly, this year’s event will deliver an exclusive Nantucket experience no matter where you may be, and provide the vital funding for the NHA to continue its steadfast commitment to steward and preserve the heritage of Nantucket. “We are so looking forward to celebrating the special place that Nantucket holds for all of us with the unique programs we have developed for this year,” says Kelly Williams, Chair. “Our beautiful island provides solace and comfort in so many ways, and so, it is appropriate that we had chosen the theme of ‘Sanctuary’ for this year’s Nantucket by Design, well before we had any inkling of what was to come. Like so many other organizations, we are working hard to develop an engaging and inspiring event series while, at the same time, keeping safety paramount.” All-Access Tickets give you entry to six of Nantucket by Design virtual events, including the Night at the Museum ending party. Leadership Package Tickets are available in six different levels: each includes tickets to events, plus additional

AAN Opens First In-Person Gallery Exhibit of 2020

The Artists Association of Nantucket’s downtown gallery, the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street, is now open to visitors for the 2020 season. Their first exhibition is “Summer Small Works,” which will be on display through mid-August on the first floor of the gallery. “The summer small works is an AAN tradition for artists and customers alike, and we thought it would be extra special to reopen the gallery with this show because there is always such diversity and truly something for everyone,” said gallery manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. Work by nearly 50 member artists is on display—paintings, ceramics, and photographs that are all originals. To be included, work must be no larger than 13 x 16, and some pieces in the show are as small as 4 x 4. “This year due to the world-wide pandemic, we are adhering to best safety practices and are only opening the first floor of the gallery; visitors must wear a face covering and we’re allowing only four people in at one time, for the safely of our guests and staff,” Greenhalgh added. In addition to the in-person exhibit, an online version of the Small Works show opens July 31 on the AAN website at nantucketarts.org/buy-art and will be available there for three weeks. The gallery is in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District, just a few steps off of Main Street down Washington Street, past the Handlebar Cafe. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm and 2:30 to 5 pm. To learn more about the AAN, visit the website at nantucketarts.org. For additional details about their carefully crafted – with best safety practices – 2020 programs, call the Artists Association at 508-228-0722.

The Mysteries & Dangers of Fog

“The Little Grey Lady of the Sea” is how we're known. How many business names around Nantucket have something to do with “Grey Lady”? And it's not just the gray shingles. Benjamin Moore even has a beautiful blue grey paint color called ‘Nantucket Fog.” On Nantucket, we literally live and breathe fog. There is a certain mystery about fog. It sets a tone for a story. An evening fog can be a bit spooky. A morning fog can be a charming, cool walk in the summer. “Fog is a cloud that touches the ground.” With all of its historic charm, downtown Nantucket already resembles a bygone era. If you look too close, though, you get caught up in high-end clothing stores and art galleries. When the fog rolls in, it blurs the edges a bit and can transport you back to an earlier century. Using that lens, not too much has changed. Sometimes, the fog can be a nuisance: when you're driving and can't see the road, when you finally get to the beach on your day off, or when fog marrs the view for a perfect photo. Here on Nantucket, it's not just that the fog appears frequently, it runs our lives to some extent. The planes don't fly in the fog. Flights are delayed, connections missed, as we are subject to the elements. The boat goes slower, the drivers slow down - the fog sets the pace. How many newspapers or “overnight” mail have been delayed because of fog? Those are just minor inconveniences. Yes, our lighthouses are charming, but remember why they are there. They are warning lights. In the dark and in fog, a ship might not see our small grey lady, her shoals and other hazards. The fog hides things. One of the most famous shipwrecks in our waters is the Andrea Doria. This Italian ship collided with the Swedish ocean liner, Stockholm, in a heavy Atlantic fog in 1956. Imagine two huge ocean liners that couldn't navigate around each other because of thick fog. They were already on a collision course, but the fog was so thick that by the time visual contact was made, it was too late to course-correct. Fifty-one passengers and crew were killed in the collision. This incident remains the worst maritime disaster to occur in US waters since 1915. A thick, “pea soup” fog was also blamed for the sinking of a Nantucket Lightship boat LV-117 in 1934. The Lightship, which was moored purposely to warn ships of the shallow shoals around the south part of the island, was cut in half by the White Star ocean liner Olympic, the sister ship to the Titanic. Seven lives were lost in that accident. So, what causes all of this charming, but deadly fog? Well, it is true that fog is basically a cloud on the ground. Clouds, however, can form at any altitude even as high as 12 miles above sea level. So think about that the next time you're on a plane and see all the white fluffy clouds up close. If you've ever taken a walk in the fog, you now know what a swim in those clouds would feel like. But how do they actually form and why? Fog occurs when it's very humid, much like we've been experiencing the past few weeks. We see fog when water vapor in the air condenses. Water vapor, as a continued on page 13

Considering Consideration by Robert P. Barsanti

August arrives like the answer to a prayer. All of the fog that has shrouded the island through July has flown away, while the ocean has brought life back to sand bars and tuna bars. In the warm and dry evenings, the town slips into its al fresco best and settles lobster bisque into the bowls and ice cream into the children. August remains the gift we gave ourselves in the quiet of May. The month brings house rentals, boat charters, and lines at the brewery. Everything considered, it could be a lot worse on our sandy petri dish. Outdoor dining has been a revelation, if not quite a salvation. The dining room at the Club Car has an old-world ambiance that the picnic tables in the alley can’t really replicate. However, the Nantucket night, the rising moon over the harbor, and cool breezes may make for a better date and a longer life. The Town and the restaurants have traded parking places for dining tables. The Town has never been terribly comfortable with the summer weight and girth of cars. When they leave the Steamship, they come rattling up the street as if they are still in Scarsdale, become shocked at a crosswalk, and then confused at the lack of traffic lights. What—simply—is one to do? America has been constructed around one man in his car. He leaves his garage, pulls up for an iced coffee and a cruller, turns up the air conditioning, and then parks in a garage for the day. His way is defined by lines, signs, and lights: there are rules. On-island, the rules defer to consideration. Lights and signs will not guide you so much as eyes, handwaving, and yielding to another. In order to drive on-island, you must roll your window down. You can’t drive this island for long in an air-conditioned cocoon listening to Joe Rogan before you run aground. Instead, you have to listen, you have to wave, and you have to empathize with the driver of the Bartlett’s truck. Unfortunately, the people of August keep their windows up. At Hatch’s last week, a Ford 350 from Texas and his boat pulled in for a case of beer. At noon. He sat in the middle of the parking lot waiting for a slot to open up in front of the liquor store. When one didn’t open up immediately, the driver started banging on the wheel. The gas station attendant rapped on his window so as to introduce him to reality. He blew his horn. Then backed up, and accelerated out of the lot while hammering, still, on his wheel. In August, he is everywhere. The family of August came to an island eatery. While Dad tried to park the truck, his family came to the head of the line to place their order. When the counter reminded them about twelve people queued up, they said that they didn’t wait in line and, if they wanted their business, they would serve them now. It turned out that restaurant did not want their custom.

Downtown, at a bookstore, a woman of August came in without a mask. When directed to wear one, August claimed that she didn’t believe in them. She then selected her Elin Hilderbrand, put it on the counter, and met a shut register and a silent clerk. Americans, particularly the People of August, are sensitive about their rights. Their rights, however, tend to be the Freedom To. They have the freedom to assemble, the freedom to express themselves, and the freedom to be inconsiderate. Due to their taxes and their tips, they require indulgence from the rest of us. To them, the island has become a “members only” club with a somewhat unruly staff. They put the “serf” in “service.” The people of August have been coming to the island for a century now. The privilege and presumption are baked into the croissants, stored in the Chanticleer wine cellar, and served like a tennis ball. However, we live in uncertain times. The antics that brought amusement, disgust, and stories at the Angler’s Club are now framed in black and heard in silence. Some of the people of August are arriving infected, hiring baby-sitters and day care without mentioning their little Covid secret, and then going out to eat. They are having cheeseburgers and lemonade by the side of the pool. Their children are burning pallets and singing the old songs at Nobadeer. Since late June, the island has seen more than 22 cases of Covid-19 — many of them from off-island. Nantucket sings and swings on consideration. You can’t act without thinking of others because the others are thinking of you. You must drive with your eyes up and your windows open, because the guy in the Miles Reis truck has to see you before he turns. Your Freedom To runs smack dab into Freedom From, then gets a load of garbage on the hood. You have to look, you have to wave, you have to wait. The best of Nantucket lines up every night for ice cream. They wear masks, they stand six feet away, and they wait their turns. The line is egalitarian; everyone will be served in the order they appeared. No velvet rope exerts its privilege. No hostess will recognize you. No assistant will call ahead. If you want a Watermelon Cream, take your place and wait your turn. If you want special treatment, there is another island nearby waiting just for you. Consideration, the boring jeans and t-shirt of island living, brought us this August. We thought of our children, we thought of our parents, and we thought of the People of August. Now, the people of August need to have consideration for us.

Discover Yourself & Help Fairwinds Help Others

A lot has changed in the past four months, but there is always learning that happens during demanding, stressful experiences. Among the many shifts that everyone has experienced since the start of the pandemic is the opportunity to look at the world through new eyes. The folks at Fairwinds, Nantucket’s own counseling center, suspect that all of us are capable of seeing even ourselves in a new light. Their Portrait Fundraiser aligns strongly with that idea—the idea that a portrait is not an act of creation, but an act of discovery. It’s a discovery of what is really there: the new and developing, as well as the familiar. Fairwinds is incredibly excited to launch this fundraiser, which will be ongoing weekly through the end of the calendar year. Robin G. London, an accomplished photographer and member of the Fairwinds staff, has worked in portraiture and other forms of photography for more than 30 years throughout New York City, Westchester, and lower New England. With her skills and jubilant approach to revealing and discovering the wonderful and beautiful truth about her subjects, every subject is sure to have a blast while creating a treasured keepsake portrait. Suggested donation amounts are available at fairwindscenter.org and are completely tax deductible. Your donation will help this essential island agency continue to offer health services to everyone, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. The impact of such donations cannot be overstated. Your donation not only supports Fairwinds, but also provides a 45-minute socially distant portrait sitting at an iconic Nantucket location for just yourself, or you and your spouse, or your immediate family—even a larger group portrait can be arranged. Along with a hard copy, donors also receive 20 to 25 digital photos, including one of your photos in high-resolution. Visit fairwindscenter.org and click on the camera icon to set up your portrait session.

ISLAND GARDENING

Candy from a Vine by Greyson Keller

Tomatoes sun ripened, Potatoes Earth grown. My harvests beckoned, As I walked the cobblestone. Herbs full of flavor, And Zucchini on the mind. A taste I will savor, Now a meal to design.

Start from scratch, With produce from your patch, Nourish the body and soul, With a beautiful beet bowl. Regardless of what your grow, There will be bounty galore. As the garden reaches its crescendo, And comes through the kitchen door.

In the garden, a mourning dove calls. The heat of the day is already boasting of its strength, but there’s a slight wind with a gentle touch as it cools the sweat of my brow. The air is saturated and heavy, but the prize offers a brief reprieve in radiant red. It's tomato season. As I fill my basket with candy from a vine, I catch myself daydreaming of all the edible endeavors in my future...assuming the harvest makes it into the house before my daughter and I eat it all. But if you’re like me, you’ve sown way too many tomatoes and you’re about to have an avalanche of abundance. In years past, I’ve felt guilty for not being able to eat or give away all my tomatoes and some inevitably go bad. I have a plan this year. I’ve read some recipes and watched some videos on how to store that quintessential summer flavor. I’ve also focused on companion planting, which is proving successful beyond just the symbiotic relationships in my garden. The basil for instance has not only helped keep pests off my tomatoes, but I’ll be able to harvest it with the tomatoes. continued on page 20

Mysteries & Dangers of Fog from page 5

gas, is invisible. In order for fog to form, dust or other particles (sometimes pollution) needs to be in the air. The water vapor condenses around the particles, leaving tiny droplets of water hanging in the air. Sea fog, which is what we primarily experience, shows up near bodies of salty water. This type of fog is formed as water vapor condenses around bits of sea salt. Another type of fog, radiation fog, is also known as “ground fog.” This forms on clear nights with light wind. As the earth releases the warm air it absorbed throughout the daytime, the ground cools and, in turn, cools the air. If it is completely still, the result is dew. With air movement, condensation in the air creates mist or fog. This is the kind that hangs low. It “burns off” as the sun rises and begins to, again, warm the earth. Our vegetation and animals have adapted to living on a remote sandy island and benefit from the regular fog. Even in a drought condition with little to no rainfall, thick, heavy fog can condense further on vegetation and leave the landscape dripping wet. This gives plants some moisture to hold off wilting. There have been more than a few summers where the rest of the state was under technical drought conditions, but Nantucket wasn't, primarily due to the influence of regular fog events. This moisture availability also helps out insects, small mammals, and birds who can take advantage of the moisture left on vegetation. Of course, if you are a farmer or gardener, not only does fog not eliminate the need to water the roots, but it also might subject your crops to various fungus rot, and other blights brought on by moisture on the leaves. Powdery mildew and tomato rot are common afflictions of this sort. Sailors are usually more worried about advection fog, which is formed when relatively warm, moist air flows over colder surface water. Sometimes called “sea fog,” this type of fog can occur anytime of the day and even in strong winds. As a fisherman and boat captain, my husband has said how different a fishing trip is in the fog. Sometimes the fog can help fishing. The stripers are more active closer to the surface as the light from the sun is blocked. It's the other boaters, especially pleasure boaters, that put him on edge. He has radar which can show other vessels nearby. Go slow and collisions can be avoided. But it's everyone else you have to look out for. This time of year many pleasure boats are driven by inexperienced mariners. If a fog rolls in unexpectedly, lots of vacation-boaters are stuck. They may blindly follow their GPS back to the harbor, but without radar, they can't tell if there are other boats in the area until they are right in front of (or on top of) them. There have been many close calls! Lately on Nantucket, many beachgoers have settled on their blanket for a long, sunny day at the beach only to be suddenly inundated by a fog bank. This happened to me last weekend on the south shore. The fog hung for a bit and then unceremoniously “burned off.” So, what caused it? These beach fogs are caused by a classic trifecta: warm summer air temperatures, cooler ocean water, and high humidity due to tropical moisture coming in from the south. The higher humidity means more water vapor in the air to form fog. Further inland, the temperatures are just as high, but there isn't the same tropical air and the land surface is warmer. For those who find themselves in this kind of fog while on shore or in a boat. As the old saying goes, “If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.” Chances are, the fickle fog will vanish soon enough.

Things like homemade caprese salads, bruschetta, margarita pizzas and even pasta sauces will be less of a fantasy and more of a reality. These two plants have been inseparable from the start, and that’s the way it’ll stay. Tomatoes aren’t the only thriller in the garden these days. Just last night we made beet burgers and home fries. The beets and potatoes were pulled straight from the garden and on our plates within an hour. This gave a whole new meaning to the term HOME fries. This time of year I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. We’re either cooking fresh or trying to preserve the harvests. It’s difficult to speak about veg gardening without including the kitchen. Gardening and cooking go hand in hand. I’ve always been a better gardener than cook, but as I get older and more experienced in the kitchen, the skills are evening out. At least I hope they are, for my wife and kids’ sake. With that in mind, I think it’s best to offer up some easy recipes for you to try with some veggies that are likely in your summer garden. Let’s start with the quickest and easiest. If you haven’t tried potatoes in your garden, you’re missing out. There is nothing better than a flowery auld spud, parboiled with melted butter, salt, pepper and a small handful of fresh, homegrown mint. This is my ideal July appetizer. The idea is to get the spud from ground to gullet as quickly as possible. There is a depth of flavor there that makes my Irish wife long for the shores of her hometown. This dish is best enjoyed standing in the kitchen, sharing one plate with two forks and inward breathing the whole time because the heat and flavor are so intense, it's a sin to even exhale. The next dish is, of course, the beet burgers. Beets are so easy to grow and they’re surprisingly versatile in the kitchen. Everything from the simple roasties to beet burgers or beet wellington. The guys over at The Happy Pear do a great beet wellington that I always try to emulate for any fall or winter celebration. You can find that recipe on Youtube in The Happy Pear vlog. The recipe that I’ll highlight is from a meal service company called Purple Carrot. They deliver some really creative recipes that you can change, adjust, and perfect. Beets are beaucontinued on page 21

tiful. They’re one of the vegetables that I always have in the ground. We’re just about finished with our first round of beets, but I’ve already sown the fall crop and it’s not too late for you to do the same. Here are the directions for beet burgers with smoky tomato aioli and potato wedges (I did home fries). Preheat the oven to 425. Add a quarter cup of quinoa and a quarter cup of of jasmine rice to a small saucepan filled with one cup of salted water. Cover, reduce heat to low and cook until the grains are tender and water is absorbed, about 1012 minutes. While the grains are simmering away, cut the potatoes into wedges or cubes depending on whether you’re doing home fries or wedges. Add them to a large bowl and toss with oil, salt, and pepper. I skip the salt and pepper and just use Montreal steak seasoning. It’s amazing. Toss them onto a baking sheet and into the oven for 18-20 minutes. Now for the tomato aioli. They call for tomato powder, but that’s blasphemy if you have fresh, ripe, sun warmed tomatoes outside on the vine. Go collect some tomatoes, cut them up, add a little S & P and toss them into the oven with the potatoes until they get all wrinkled and slightly browned in areas. When they reach that point, pull them out, add some mayo or veganaise and an eighth of a tsp of liquid smoke. Whisk it all together and salt to taste. Now for the main ingredient. Grab a fat beet or two and grate them. You might want to wear gloves because your hands will turn bright pink. My daughter was jealous because she thought I had been finger painting without her. Once you have your grated beets, put them with the cooked grains and half a cup of panko breadcrumbs into a food processor. Blend until well combined, scraping down the sides as necessary. Now divide the beet burger mixture into equal patties about three quarters of an inch thick. Add some oil to a skillet over medium high heat and cook until lightly browned and warmed through. About 5-7 minutes per side. It’s a good idea to toast your buns while the burgers are cooking. Add a bit of mayo to the bottom half of your toasted bun, then the beet burger, then your tomato aioli, some chopped shallot, maybe some pea shoots or any kind of green from the garden, and you’re done. Plate up with some of your wedges or home fries and enjoy outside on your patio or deck. Dig in! Lastly, considering it is tomato time, I think I’ll share my favorite pasta sauce recipe with you. Now, obviously you can enjoy this fresh, but I much prefer freezcontinued on page 24

Featured Restaurant: Fifty-Six Union

Long Awaited Fifty-Six Reunion by C. Oscar Olson

For those of us who like to dine out, this recent hiatus from restaurants has been a bear. Weeks quickly turned into months, and though takeout has been an option, we missed the experience of dining out. Last week was the first chance in what felt like ages we had to sit down and be served: to relax and enjoy a stressfree evening with great service, excellent food and drink, and all the ambiance we could ask for. Fifty-Six Union made this possible in a way no other island eatery could match. With an ideal location close to downtown but away from the noise and traffic, Fifty-Six Union boasts plenty of parking and ample seating in their private outdoor garden for all your friends and family. For this season, owners Wendy and Peter Jannelle have added more tables to this prized garden setting, complete with propane powered heaters and ultra-soft fleece throws for those cooler nights. Newly laid bluestone provides Melon and Prosciutto a walkway and undertable surfaces to keep your feet grass-free. There’s another outdoor area under cover where starry lights shine overhead at night, along with dining indoors and hightop tables at the bar. When we arrived, the sun was still shining and the weather was warm, so some cold drinks were just what we needed. Their specialty cocktails are all worth trying, and Wendy recommended the ACK Mule. It hit all the spots with the island’s own 888 Cranberry Vodka, Canton ginger liqueur, ginger beer, and fresh lime. Served in a copper cup, it is slightly sweet with nice ginger spice and so refreshing. We might not have guessed the Huckleberry Lemonade was even a cocktail with its incredibly smooth sip-ability. 44 North Huckleberry Vodka mingles with fresh lemonade and splash of soda for some sparkle. For an alternative that actually is alcohol-free, fresh-brewed Hibiscus Iced Tea has a beautiful red hue and is full of flavor. A squeeze of fresh lemon enhanced the floral fruitiness. The dinner menu is awesomely diverse, featuring flavors from home and around the world. A couple of cold starters sounded just right. A delicious and generous plate of Rocket Greens is sized to share with a peppery crunch from the arugula, pops of savory sweetness from sun-dried tomatoes, tangy acidic lemon and balsamic, toasty pignoli, and just enough salt from some parmesan. A group favorite is the Melon and Prosciutto, which combines the best of

both worlds. Sweet and seasonal watermelon mingles with rich prosciutto and bright chevre, with fresh basil to enhance the two components and a balsamic drizzle to bring it all together.

Chicken Dim Sum Four perfect potstickers come in an order of Chicken Dim Sum, which was just enough for everyone to try. The wrapper was paper thin and delicately delicious, giving way to the moist, tender, seasoned filling. A scrumptious soy-mirin glaze enhanced every nibble. We’ll be in a pinch trying to find a better Crab Cake than the one served at Fifty-Six. A crispy crust from the light breading crackles in every bite of Jonah and lump crab, peppers, scallions, and cilantro. The gleaming lobster americaine sauce underneath is brimming with complexity and just enough cayenne for a warming kick. Wendy and Peter are well known for their commitment to the craft as well as to their island community. Peter runs the back of the house, having honed his skills as a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America. He first went to work at the Holland America Lines, and his global travels helped inspire the eclectic Crab Cake complexity of flavors on the menu today. Wendy holds down the front and hand-picks the well-priced and well-varied wine list, full of excellent offerings you don’t often see on-premise. They have been serving the island community on Union Street for twenty years, keeping the tastes fresh, tables full, and customers coming back all year long. The couple are in attendance at the restaurant every evening. We couldn’t imagine a better beginning to our first night out in ages, and the excitement was palpable when our entrees came out of the kitchen. With the heat hanging on til sunset and the warmth of the day lingering longer, the Seared Rare Tuna is a hot item at Fifty-Six. It’s served cool and 7-spice dusted with a

slight sear around the edges and a sprinkling of black and white sesame seeds. Several slices sit atop a bed of udon noodles alongside a pickled ginger aioli and nuoc cham, and garlic-lime asian style sauce, for dipping. The noodles are tossed in a creamy tahini base atop al dente asparagus for a verdant crunch. Grilled Rib Eye Heart of Beef Grilled Rib Eye Heart of Beef is a steakhouse favorite, and the mac & cheese served alongside left us at a loss for words. Curly cavatappi was covered with a creamy, complex, out-of-this-world blend of cheeses and peppered with crisp, thick cut bacon. The tender meat was spot-on medium rare and served with sauce au poivre: a peppery pan sauce made with cream and cognac. Bright and crisp haricot vert helped lighten things up. Five seared, sweet, and succulent Jumbo Sea Scallops sat atop a smoky-sweet port wine chipotle beurre rouge with earthy French lentils and slightly bitter broccolini. The lentils readily Jumbo Sea Scallops soaked up the sauce and each bite hit every mark. A new item on the menu, the Eggplant Involtini, is a sampling of summer vegetables. Baked to order in an au gratin dish, it’s piping hot and served with a slice of crusty, buttery bread. Under the browned, bubbling provolone awaits eggplant, bell pepper, spinach, ricotta and parmesan cheeses in a Tuscan tomato sauce. It’s rich and meaty and very much vegetarian. Our waiter, Dan, was incredibly kind and accommodating and knew the menu like a well-read book. He was never far away but did not hover, and he answered questions without guessing or hesitation, just Eggplant Involtini

one of the many reasons why Fifty Six Union keeps us coming back. The only restaurant in town I’d run to just for dessert is Fifty-Six Union. Wendy and the kitchen take great care in crafting their unique treats, and you’ll almost always find a few new options to satisfy your sweet tooth. We discovered a malt shop classic in the Toffee Sundae. Scoop after scoop of vanilla ice cream served up in a sundae glass, covered in caramel and sprinkled with toasted coconut. We had a hard time finding the bottom, but it was too good to leave a bite behind. Toffee Sundae When it comes to butter, we like the good stuff. And since Kerrygold is the best, we couldn’t miss the Kerrygold Creme Brulee. We cracked through the crust to find a filling rich and creamy beyond compare, yet still light and full of fluff. The sweetness comes from the burned sugar on top, so the quality of the cream isn’t lost in the mix. The Gelato Cookie Sandwich brings out the kid in all of us. This rustic, homemade classic brings two white chocolate, peanut butter, and pretzel cookies together with a salted caramel gelato, and we loved the salty pops throughout. This option changes a few times throughout the season, and we can’t wait to see what’s next. Our all-time favorite finale at Fifty-Six, Berry Shortcake, is a Nantucket summertime staple. Wendy quite literally brings grandma’s shortcake recipe to life, enhanced with the essence of orange. Strawberries and blueberries shine under peaks of whipped cream making this one delicious and patriotic epilogue to dinner. If you’re finishing your meal with a cup of coffee, make sure you ask about the biscotti. We were lucky to land a fresh batch of Cranberry Pistachio Biscotti: two of our favorite flavors dipped in dark chocolate and dusted with powdered sugar. Simple, delicious, and too good to miss. Our visit to Fifty-Six Union left us feeling not only fully satisfied, but fully comfortable with once again dining out of the house. Every precaution is taken without sacrificing a single thing we’ve grown to love about this dining destination. Call today to make Fifty-Six part of your island summer.

ing it to enjoy the flavors of summer when snow blankets the veg beds outside. Of course you do lose some vibrancy of flavor when you freeze anything, but I think it's a fair trade. Start by harvesting any ripe tomatoes, basil, and garlic from the garden. Garlic is something that I harvested a few weeks ago and it has been drying since then. First, I like to roast the tomatoes and garlic in oil, salt, and pepper. Just long enough to brown the skins. Then, toss the tomatoes and roasted garlic into a skillet. Once simmering, I add just a bit of balsamic vinegar and maple syrup. Let those flavors combine for a bit. Add some red pepper flakes and thyme or oregano to your liking. More salt and pepper to taste and then add it all to a food processor. Top with as much fresh basil as you’d like (I like a lot) and some grated parmesan cheese. Blend away, and you’re done. This is obviously at its peak when used immediately but, as I mentioned, I like to store it in some tupperware and freeze for use in the winter months. This sauce is so versatile too. You can use it for a simple pasta dish, lasagna, eggplant parmesan, and so on. The options are almost limitless. The garden and kitchen are becoming one in the same to me. Inside the home, our kitchen is the hub of happiness for our family. It’s where we all inevitably congregate to talk, drink wine, and unwind from our days. The garden is an extension of our home. We’ve set up tables and chairs all through, so it's not just a place where we grow food, but it's a beautiful environment for us to relax and enjoy the view. We have family dinners and socially distant gatherings to bask in the delight of our plot. During this new normal, we have to focus on what makes us happy and keeps us all safe. The sense of accomplishment I get when I grow something amazing from a tiny seed is tough to describe, but I can tell you, it never gets old. That feeling translates to the kitchen, too, when I take that harvest and create a nourishing meal for my family. After all, it's not just veggies we’re growing, it’s relationships and connections and, most importantly, two little humans.

Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest and savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Where to Take Your Take-Out There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself! Massachusetts state restrictions on restaurants have begun to ease, and island eateries are offering distanced indoor dining in addition to outdoor table service and takeout. There are still limitations under current guidance, and statewide and local face-covering orders remain in effect. For up-to-date details, visit nantucket.net/COVID-19-FAQ.php

Around Town You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most in-town streets. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance.

The Atheneum Park Entrance to this is along India Street, to the right of the steps into the Nantucket Atheneum. There are benches and a grassy area where children like to play.
