Take the 2021 BioBlitz Challenge
July 8-14, 2021

by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois
Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation July is peak season for many things on Nantucket. It can be the most difficult time to get an ice cream cone or a parking space, as many of us know, but it's also peak growing season – when the highest biodiversity is visible on island. Blooming flowers, ripening berries, budding fall asters, and fledgling birds abound. There is so much to see in every habitat across the island. What’s the best way to see and enjoy this multitude of species? Join in on the Nantucket Land Council and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation’s July Bioblitz Challenge! What is a bioblitz, anyway? A bioblitz is typically an effort to catalog as many species as possible in a given area over a specified amount of time. Usually, a bioblitz involves a mix of experts and community scientists to cover an area. Nantucket is a great place for bioblitzes, as being an Goat’s Rue Flower by Sarah T. Green Retreats by Robert P. Barsanti
The backyard has grown in. When we first moved in, the backyard inched up to a stone wall, and then expanded into a low bushes and a marsh before it rose into paddocks and a ridge. The ridge, of course, sprouted houses sometime just after the turn of the millennium. The low brush, on the other hand, was once a place where I stood up the old Christmas tree so that the boys could see it through the spring and summer. Now, those bushes have grown to eight feet or so, and the houses on the ridge are hidden. We seem to have collected a few trees over the years. In the early photos, when the boys have plastic loaders and backhoes loading gravel and dirt in the foreground, two small sticks with leaves swing precariously back and forth. Today, both trees stand thirty feet high and cover our back yard in comfortable and comforting shade. In the evening, the sun sets amid the grasses and shrubs, then the evening star illumines the deepening purple. The fireflies emerged in late May and blow with the wind, like embers, over the dimming landscape. As long as we are careful for ticks and mosquitoes, we can remain out there in the silence and solitude. When we think of New England, we imagine forests of looming elms, maples, and pines. But for most of the modern history of Nantucket, we were the bare elbow of sand where all of the wood had either been cut into boats or burned. The trees we see today were imported. One of the oldest trees on-island, the elm near the high school, was planted in 1851 by Henry Coffin, as whaling was winding down on island. Before that, the island was mostly bare and grassy, munched down by the mouths of hundreds (or thousands) of sheep. Even in the 50s, looking east from the Town Clock, you can see the bare and burned scalp of the island stretching out to Sconset. You could see everything. Now, when we planted all of these bushes and trees (or at least failed to trim them), we were building our own secret gardens. Not that the neighbors want to watch us sunbathing in the afternoon, showering outside, or celebrating our marriages on steamy summer nights. But those hedges and trees sealed us away in a bubble of green. Now, thanks to my lack of industry, I can stand on the back porch, look up at the blue afternoon sky, and seem to be alone in my little world. And, in my little world, things don’t change so much. It’s cool in the shade, quiet, and still. I don’t see much, nor do I want to. That quiet isolation—that little insular, secret garden—that is the change. The houses in town, the old houses, are not built that way. They practically lean over the cobblestones in search of news, gossip, and friends. You open a window and the street washes into the front room. You go up to the roof walk, and you can see what’s going on in the harbor. Everyone can see you, both when your shades are open and when they are closed. Our homes changed slowly, as the trees and bushes changed, and the island became honeycombed with green retreats. Like mine. I understand taking one step back. This summer is too much with us and too soon. The vans and trucks back up Old South Road from the rotary to Valero’s. The Range Rovers and the Jeeps clog Quaker Lane; the traffic is the same as it is every year, except just a little worse. We think. Like the trees and bushes, the continued on page 46

Decorative Arts Classes in Remarkable Historic Home
Page 5
by Suzanne Daub Dedicated to celebrating and reviving island’s rich tradition of historic decorative arts and crafts, the Nantucket Historical Association’s Decorative Arts program, now in its 16th year, for 2021 is offering classes and workshops at Greater Light, 8 Howard Street. This historic NHA property has a long history of creativity, beginning in the 1930s, when the Monaghan sisters converted a barn into their summer residence, creating an art colony of their own. Designed and run by Mary Emery Lacoursiere, the Peter M. & Bonnie J. Sacerdote Chair of Education and Community Relations, more than 30 classes and workshops are being taught through September. These include needlework, penwork, ceramic transferware, sailors valentines, scrimshaw, lightship basket bracelets, shell art, letterpress, fraktur, and more. A full list of the classes, their times, and the instructors is at nha.org/whats-on/programs/decorative-arts/ A graduate of Pratt Institute with an M.F.A. in printmaking and painting, Lacoursiere is a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration. “I’ve always taught,” she explained, adding that at this NHA program, “we hold to the traditions of the past and make them current. The key is that many of our classes are for all levels: you can come in never having touched these materials and have success. If you have experience, you can take your skills to the next level... because the prep work is done, people can experience the joy of creating and finishing their projects.” She describes the classes as “Nantucket artisanal crafts made modern to be more applicable to today”—function and beauty brought together. “There are not many places where you can come to learn early American techniques and create something new,” she added.
The program offers single-session and multi-session classes, and some evening programs. Lacoursiere teaches classes along with other guest instructors, many of whom are well-known in their fields. With the new affiliation between the two island organizations, expert weavers who previously taught youth basketweaving classes at the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum are now teaching at this NHA program. Class size is small, and private classes popular with families and groups of friends can be arranged. Looking for something different for a wedding party activity? Arrange for a class to make an island craft. Free stitching gams—informal gatherings to finish projects or start new ones without instruction—are held on Wednesday mornings through August 25 from 9:30 am to 12 noon. Holding the Decorative Arts program at Greater Light “carries on the tradition of the Monaghans: they created a space that suited their artistic endeavors, and they drew in like-minded people,” Lacoursiere explained. Originally built around 1790 as a livestock barn, sisters Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan discovered Greater Light in 1929, when they followed a herd of cattle up Main Street... The garden, once a barren barnyard, was a key to the sisters' vision for Greater Light. Independent, highly educated Quakers from Philadelphia, the Monaghans first came to Nantucket in 1923. Gertrude was a well-established and award-winning muralist; Hanna, the younger sister, was an author and amateur actress. The two devoted their lives to art as an expression of their faith. Hanna wrote: “I truly believe that art captures the Eternal in the everyday.” They converted this barn into their home and studio in the 1930s. Combining continued on page 47

Bartlett’s Farm plays a part in everyone’s summer on Nantucket. It just wouldn’t be the same without their prized tomatoes, sweet summer corn, and island-grown produce of every variety. This year they’re making it even easier to get their homegrown goodness to your table. For close to two centuries, the Farm has been making the trip to Main Street with a truck-full of flavor. The tradition began around 1852, and today flowers and produce are still picked same day to ensure they’re at the peak of freshness. In an improvement upon that terrific tradition, two more produce trucks have been added around the island. You can now secure the freshest food on Nantucket at four locations: find them through Labor Day Monday-Saturday from 8am to 1pm at their new location on the corner of Old South & Ironwood roads, Madaket Center at Millie’s Market, ‘Sconset Center, and at their original spot downtown on Main Street. And, of course, Bartlett’s Farm Market is open daily from 7 am. Bartlett’s Farm is a family operation with more than 100 acres of open fields for growing produce and flowers. In the last 10 years, they have transitioned more than 30 acres to certified organic to meet the growing damand. Their Garden Center and market is a must visit, with everything you need create and maintain your home, inside and out.

Tickets are on sale now for a very special event to be held on July 25. In the spirit of unity that brought the two organizations into an affiliation, the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum (NLBM) and Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) are jointly hosting the popular annual NLBM summer fundraiser, Baskets & Bubbly. For 2021, the event will include an online auction that opens July 18 and continues to July 25, when an in-person celebration will be held 4 to 6 pm. The auction will include more than 25 lightship baskets and basket-related items, making it a one-of-a-kind event. This virtual auction will offer buyers the opportunity to bid on exquisitely handcrafted items, including a Manny Dias basket tray, a Michael Kane woven bracelet embellished with scrimshaw, a Karol Lindquist oval basket, and many more unique pieces. The Baskets & Bubbly Garden event that officially closes the online auction on July 25 will be held in the garden of the Hadwen House at 96 Main Street, where
light hors d’oeuvres and bubbly will be served as participants tour exhibits. "What inspires us is that every Nantucket lightship basket is one-of-a-kind incorporating the heart of the person who made it. Both of us are profoundly excited and desire to do what we can to preserve this iconic craft and its history,” commented cochairs Karen Butler and Jackie Kupper. As an affiliate of the NHA, the NLBM retains all funds donated, which can be used to carry out its mission. The NLBM’s ongoing emphasis is teaching the craft and sharing the history of making Nantucket lightship baskets. Ultimately, a new gallery dedicated to Nantucket craft, named the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum Gallery within the NHA’s Broad Street campus, will be created. The NHA’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences. Ordinary Men Doing Extraordinary Things
After 18 months of an outdoor exhibit, online displays, and special Time & Tide podcasts, the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving museum has once again opened its doors to visitors this season. This year’s special exhibition is “Duty and Diligence: Station Life in the U.S. Life-Saving Service.” Visitors will step back in time for an immersive experience recreating a Lifesaving Station’s environment from the turn of the 20th century. Who were the men who joined the Service, and how were they trained to endure the fury of storms, hours of strenuous rowing, and putting their lives at risk saving strangers? The exhibit tries to answer those questions by showcasing artifacts used in drills and rescues by the island’s surfmen: ordinary men doing extraordinary things. This museum and exhibit preserves and presents them in honor of their self-sacrifice. The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Robert Taylor and sponsored by Novation Media. In addition to all the great things families and visitors will find inside the museum, the Nantucket Shipwreck & Life-Saving Museum is offering outdoor programs daily during July and August, mornings and afternoons. Educators and interpreters will be on hand from 10:30am to noon and from 2:30-4pm to guide a set educational program for each day. Monday: Breeches Buoy demonstration Tuesday: Heaving lines and life ring tosses. Wednesday: Rain Gutter Regatta: Boat Building Design and Race Thursday: Marlinspike Seamanship: Basic knots – Bracelets/Monkeyfists Friday: Marlinspike Seamanship: Ropemaking Saturday Morning: Advanced Marlinspike Seamanship – Splicing (Attendees can make their own dog leashes!) Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum is located at 158 Polpis Road, Open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm, Sundays 10am-4pm. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for children. For details, visit eganmaritime.org or call 508-228-2505.

geographic boundary. July is the perfect season to assess the living things on the island, and in terms of participants, that’s where you come in. Anyone can participate and look for species. It’s free, and it’s a snap with the iNaturalist application. Have a cell phone? You’re ready to go. All you need to do is take a photo. Using the public free iNaturalist app, we can compile a list of species seen on Nantucket during a particular time frame. By uploading photos of any living thing to the iNaturalist community, you can receive feedback to help you identify what you’ve seen. iNaturalist also has online maps that show what other people have recorded, and where they found it. Take a quality photo, and iNaturalist’s community members of scientists and nature enthusiasts will identify what you found. Why iNaturalist? This is one of the most popular nature apps helping people around the globe identify plants and animals. It is a joint project between the California Academy of Sciences and National Geographic. As of this writing, there are currently more than 71 million observations from around the world documenting more than 338,000 species. This huge database is used by scientists to track different aspects of nature. By recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create research-quality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature. My favorite part about iNaturalist is that when I don’t know what something is—an unusual caterpillar, for example—all I need to do is take a photo. I can then upload it into iNaturalist and hit “what did you see.” An algorithm in iNaturalist suggests species based on the photo and the location. If that doesn’t get you far or if there are still too many choices, teams of volunteer experts help identify the observation until it is “research grade.” Participating in the July Common Milkweed by Sarah T. Bois Nantucket Land Council (NLC) Bioblitz is a great way to learn about iNaturalist (which I use year-round) and to learn about local biodiversity. The NLC also has lots of ways to help you learn about the tools to participate in the Bioblitz. Nantucket Land Council Associates and volunteers are hosting a series of Saturday “How to Bioblitz” sessions at our Bioblitz partner Linda Loring Nature Foundation at 110 Eel Point Road. The four sessions will be held July 10, 17, 24, and 31 from 10am to 12pm: choose one the fits your schedule. These “How to

Bioblitz” sessions are free and open to the public – come explore with us! Last year, NLC documented over 500 observations of more than 300 unique species. The goal for 2021 is to make more than 1000 observations and identify 500 unique species. As of this writing, the NLC Bioblitz had already recorded 214 observations of 161 species, and it only just started on July 1st! You can check out the project page ( inaturalist.org/projects/nlc-llnf-bioblitz-2021 ) to keep tabs on what’s been seen where and who the leaders are. Common milkweed is currently in the lead with the most observations, followed closely by one of my favorite native wildflowers: Goat’s Rue. So, for the rest of the month, head out to any location on the island with your smartphone, snap a picture of the species you see, upload to the iNaturalist app, and join NLC and LLNF for Bioblitz 2021! You can document nearly any living thing you find—fish, crabs, insects, flowers, trees, and more—to help document the many special species found on Nantucket Island. Prizes will be awarded to participants who observe the following: 1) rare/endangered species, 2) migrant species, and 3) species not yet recorded in Nantucket County. The iNaturalist database automatically buffers location information for rare species, so there is no worry in sharing species information about these special species. By taking part in the 2021 Bioblitz challenge, not only are you engaging with our beautiful open spaces and varied habitats, you are fostering a love for the outdoors for yourself, your children, and joining a community of like-minded environmentalists. Leave only footprints...
Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Featured Restaurant: Dune
A Meal that Makes a Memory by C. Oscar Olson
Every vacation has its highlight reel, and every summer season passes by with those moments we all remember. That day at the beach or that night on the water, Fourth of July fireworks or concerts on the shore, these are the things that make life worth living. For a night that you’ll fondly recall for years to come, get a table at Dune. Serving supper from 5:30pm seven nights a week, Dune is so much more than dinner: It’s an experience for the senses. Every bite is a balancing act of flavor, texture, and aroma, and the plating itself is a feast for the eyes. And the cocktails are something else entirely. Bartender Joshua Loughlin has been on the cutting edge of cocktails for years at Dune, constantly leveling-up with his incredible innova-

He kept us hydrated during dinner by bringing out three of his unique and exciting creations. The most-loved libation this summer is his Thai Basil Lemonade. It combines cucumber vodka with Thai basil, mint, and lemon with just a splash of herbal yellow chartreuse. The resulting refreshment comes in waves as a dance of basil and citrus give way to a refreshing herbal cucumber backdrop. The Late Checkout is a play on a pina colada and painkiller with a terrific taste of the tropics. It mixes mango-washed Plantation dark rum with toasted coconut infused Tito’s vodka, cream of coconut, and a dash of tiki bitcontinued on page 23

ters. Served up in a fun tiki mug (they’re for sale too!), it’s creamy yet light-bodied and refreshing. Our favorite concoction is force-carbonated and clarified: the Strawberry Tequila Soda. It drinks like champagne on the rocks with its tiny bubbles rising to the surface of Espolon Reposado, intense freezedried strawberry, and the essence of rosemary throughout. Unlike other high-end options for dining, Dune doesn’t leave you wanting more. The entrees and appetizers are more than just a few bites, ensuring you finish with not just a full belly but a satisfied soul. With more than 20 years of industry experience under his belt, Chef/Owner Michael Getter knows how to work every angle of the restaurant. A graduate of Culinary Institute of America, he has catered for thousands in a sitting and at just 21 years of age was put in charge as executive chef of the island hotspot 21 Federal. From there, he took on the role of chef/owner at the acclaimed American Seasons, received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for his talents as a

Local Organic Farm Greens Sommelier, and worked briefly as executive chef of MAX Ultimate Foods, one of Boston’s premier catering companies. His cuisine has been praised in Bon Appetit and Gourmet. Getter is a force on his own but he couldn’t do what he does at Dune without the help of his worldclass team, including his right-hand-man and Chef de Cuisine Joseph Ranstatler. Ultra-fresh and hyperlocal ingredients combine with expert technique to allow the quality of every dish to shine as bright as can be. This was evident in every dish we had, but especially so in our starters. There’s no such thing as a simple salad at Dune, and this was plain to see in the Local Organic Farm Greens. Cricket Creek feta compliments the fresh mix and sits alongside sweet charred strawberries and candied cashews. It’s perfectly coated in a light, tangy buttermilk dressing. Another cool option for those warm nights is the continued on page 24

Roasted Red and Gold Beets. Robust, savory, and satisfying, the beets shine like gemstones over whipped goat cheese, pistachios, balsamic, and a glowing beet vinaigrette. We also loved the House Made Mozzarella, lined up in layers of Bartlett’s farm tomato, fresh basil, sweet compressed melon, and crisp prosciutto chips. It’s everything you want in a salad: the flavors coming together with aged balsamic and a radiant red pepper gel.
House Made Mozzarella An acidic vegetable giardiniera and herbal basil aioli cut right through the perfect portion of Crispy Calamari, the best summertime snack. Our favorite first by far, though, was the Crispy Maryland Soft Shell Crab. The hot, crackly crustacean sits atop a bed of cool mango and vegetable ramen noodle salad. A sweet and sour sesame sauce pops off in every bite. To go with a quick drink at the bar, try one of the sides to satisfy that urge to snack. We had the golden brown Yucca Fries

with a tangy-sweet homemade ketchup. They’re sized to share, salty, and so satisfying. They say good help is hard to find, and we think it’s because Chef Getter has found it all. Quality is never in question no matter who is helping us throughout our stay. Our server, Paulie, was knowledgeable, attentive, and quick to clear our plates. Though we were still processing our expeSeared Yellowfin Tuna rience with appetizers, the best was yet to come from the kitchen. Dune has been home to a number of culinary firsts for us, and this was the first time we’ve had tuna melt in our mouths. The subtly seared edge around the Seared Yellowfin Tuna borders a beautiful ruby-red center, but there was so much more underneath. The pronounced char on the grilled broccolini provided a rare richness that combined with ponzu, watermelon, and a sesame-cashew dressing. Bamboo rice had toothsome texture and a carrot-ginger reduction tied things together with an aromatically sweet spice. Crispy Calamari continued on page 26

A steakhouse staple, we could hardly believe the model medium-rare on the Grilled Prime Sirloin Steak. Dark grill marks give way to rich red meat, and it’s served with a butter lettuce salad with bacon-red onion vinaigrette and buttery roasted fingerlings. House relish and blue cheese butter adorn the beef, and the “D-1 Sauce” is on the side is finger-licking good. Another option for the meat-eaters among us, the Barbecue Grilled Pork Chop screamed summer in so many ways. Glazed with a bright Carolina gold barbecue sauce, the meat is a perfect medium with just a hint Grilled Prime Sirloin Steak of pink. It’s served with a sweet nectarine, napa cabbage, and snap pea slaw over a bed of refried pinto beans. How the kitchen creates the crackly sear on the Pan Seared Atlantic Halibut might always remain a mystery because the brilliant white fish it reveals is flawlessly finished. The dish is Asian-inspired with shiitake mushrooms and bok choy, peas, purple potatoes, and romanesco. It all mingles in a coconut-lemongrass broth that’s good enough to drink. Our favorite main of the night came as something of a surprise. We all love continued on page 27

salmon, but it doesn’t always steal the show like Chef Getter’s Grilled Wester Ross Salmon (cover photo). The dish has a Mediterranean flair with the lively flavors of feta, roasted peppers, olives, and tomatoes with mint in a chick pea salad. A dollop of creamy tzatziki tops the fish, and the eyeopening smoked beet Pan Seared Atlantic Halibut vinaigrette counters the brightness throughout. Wester Ross Salmon are hand-raised, fed and harvested in the oldest salmon farm in Scotland. These fish truly have a quality that you can not only see but taste as well. We all needed a moment after our first courses to relax and reflect on the majesty coming out of this kitchen. There’s something otherworldly about the food at Dune: how so many familiar ingredients can suddenly feel (and taste) so new. We just know we’ll be looking back on every bite for years to come. sampled two deliciously different options. A standard at Dune and for good reason, the Chocolate Pot de Creme is sinfully rich. It’s served with the crunchy contrast of a peanut chocolate crumble and decked out with delectable vanilla whipped cream. For a lighter, brighter option, try the Summer Berry Parfait. Lime curd reminds us of our favorite pie, and nectarine syrup adds a shimmer to the fresh fruit. Toasted coconut and almonds are so much better than a cherry on top.
Before this season comes to a close, do not miss dinner at Dune. It might just be a meal, but it’s a meal that will make your Summer. Time is fleeting and Summer flies by even faster—make your reservations today.

traffic has just expanded while we weren’t paying attention. I will prune that tree next year. Maybe. Personally, I enjoy retreating to the beach. Every year, Cisco looks just like it looked last year. Sand, waves, sky, the long collapse and sigh that comes from each wave. My first swim usually comes in early July, when the houses have been opened and the classes have closed. And so, I was standing over a new beach chair on a hot afternoon in early July. Behind us, the dunes were as they always were, although the stairs that ended on the beach last year were three or four feet short this year. This year, the water is warm. Warm enough to dive in immediately, without the gentle stepping and adjustment that the Atlantic often requires. This year, you don’t need to back into a shocking surf or take that chilly surface dive to get it over with. No, you can walk into it as calmly as you would walk into a bath tub. The red kelp of August has floated up, along with the Portuguese Men of War, a few jelly fish, and the odd crab on the ocean floor. The stripers have moved off shore, the bonito have come up, and, while we waited on the beach, a gigantic seal swam westward. The island is not burning under a heat dome, nor are we in a super drought, nor are we watching icebergs drift by. In many ways, we come into this summer with full houses, full restaurants, and full wallets. Every time a thermometer hits a hundred in Boston, an island cash register rings. It seems too much to wish for a warm ocean full of hungry and greedy sport fish. Yet, here we are. But where we are is a whole world of dangerous change that will pluck us from our secret gardens and drop us in front of an implacable and grinding brown ocean. The same island that has risen up and surrounded our homes, will keep on rising. We would be well served to stop retreating and start advancing. We need to stop hiding our selves and our eyes and start noticing and listening. This summer will prove to be the hottest one we have ever seen and the coolest we ever will see.

art and whimsy with unique handcrafts, they incorporated many cast-off architectural elements they had collected: iron gates, gilded columns, stained glass and unusual windows, and various bits of trim and embellishment. According to the NHA, “Every element of every room in the house was designed by them, with carefully selected handcrafted pieces — from door latches to windows and iron balconies...What the sisters created was an intensely personal environment made up of widely disparate parts that came together with harmony in the three-dimensional collage that was their home.” The garden was another massive endeavor for the Monaghans. Hanna wrote in her diaries “As we sat in our patio and surveyed its surroundings, I said ‘A patio must have a garden, a green grassy room under the sky.’” With assistance from a local gardener, “renowned for her talent in garden design and her knowledge of flowers,” a garden was added that became integral to the property. Part of the Nantucket Art Colony that thrived on the island in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, the Monaghans enjoyed decades of artistic exploration at the property, hosting gatherings of artists of all disciplines. Bequeathed to the NHA in 1972 by Hanna Monaghan, the property was open to visitors for a number of years until it was deemed structurally unsound. After a complete restoration of the house and the garden, Greater Light was reopened for public visits in 2011. “The vibe here is good,” Lacoursiere commented. “It’s key to have an outdoor space as well as indoor...it lets us have two classes at once—we can open the spaces up. Nature here is so beautiful, we want to be in it!” The house and grounds are the perfect setting to continue artistic pursuits that are in keeping with the Monaghan tradition. “Now the creative pursuits are happening here. Instead of just honoring [the Monaghans’ inspiration], we are participating.” To sign up for the NHA’s Decorative Arts Classes and Workshops, visit nha.org. Greater Light is also open to the public during daylight hours, closing occasionally due to special events, weather, or maintenance.
