MMA Talk features Young Scientist with Global Reach

July 22-28, 2021

This Wednesday, July 28, at 7pm, Gitanjali Rao, TIME magazine’s first Kid of the Year, will speak at the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association’s (MMA) Science Speaker Series. Her talk, “The Role of Science and Technology as a Catalyst for Social Change” is part of this island organization’s Science Speaker Series and will be held via Zoom. Born in 2005, this young Colorado resident has an impressive resume: in addition to being an inventor, an author, and a scientist, she plays piano and is adept at fencing, swimming, and classical Indian dance. Despite her brilliance, the 15year-old is humble. She said in one of her sessions for young people “Don’t try to fix every problem, just focus on one that excites you. If I can do it, anybody can do it.” Gitanjali Rao was recognized as America's Top Young Scientist and received an EPA Presidential Award for inventing her device "Tethys"— a quick, low-cost test to detect lead-contaminated water. Rao is also the inventor of “Epione”— a device for early diagnosis of prescription opioid addiction using genetic engineering, and "Kindly," an anti-cyberbullying service using AI and Natural Language processing.z Rao was honored as Forbes “30 Under 30 in Science” in 2019—at a time when she was way under 30—and TIME’s “Top Young Innovator” as well as "TIME Kid of the Year" for her innovations and STEM workshops she conducts globally, which have inspired more than 50,000 students during the last two years across four continents. During her sessions, she shares her own process of innovation that can be used by students all over the world. She is an experienced TED speaker and often presents in global and corporate forums on innovation and the imporcontinued on page 24

Swim Across America Nantucket Returns

The next time you hear of a friend or family member receiving cancer or palliative care services on Nantucket you can thank a twelve-year-old who set up a lemonade stand to raise funds for Swim Across America. The funds raised by this annual swim go directly to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s (NCH) Oncology Department and Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON). The Swim is scheduled for this Saturday morning, July 24 at Jetties Beach at 8 am. Swimmers of all ages are expected to dive into the Nantucket Sound to battle cancer. There are many swim options for people of all ability. Participants can choose from a quarter-mile, a half-mile and a full mile swim. There will also be a Kids’ Splash. This year’s event was moved to late July to dodge the jellyfish that have been present in previous late August swims. There is a virtual option (“SAA MY WAY”) for those unable to join in person who want a personal challenge. Last year more than 1400 cancer treatments and visits occurred at the Swim Across America Infusion Center at NCH. The funds raised for PASCON provided nearly 300 Island residents with in-home palliative care, all free of charge. “PASCON supports nurse practitioners, therapists, and volunteers who deliver care in people’s homes and we could not do this without Swim Across America” said PASCON President, Sharon Hussey. This year’s events will also feature a long-distance swim by 12 hardy souls who will swim four miles along Nantucket’s north coast. In addition, 18 will run in the Falmouth Road Race in August as a Swim Across America team. “We expect a busy beach and will have a fun and meaningful morning on our beautiful waterfront at Jetties Beach,” said Co-Event Director Jill Roethke. Come join us to hear from Vicki Bunke, whose fourteen-year-old daughter, Grace, passed away from a childhood cancer, but only after she raised over $100,000 for cancer care in the Swim Across America-Atlanta event. “Registrations are still open and we ask all islanders and summer residents to sign up to either Swim, Volunteer or Donate at www.swimacrossamerica.org/Nantucket to help support critical cancer and palliative care services at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and PASCON. We really can’t provide these important services without this Swim,” said Co-Event Director Jim Pignato.

EYE ON STYLE: NANTUCKET PEARL COMPANY

Pearl Partners by Suzanne Daub

This Monday and Tuesday, July 26 and 27, from 10 am to 5:30pm and 6:30 to 9 pm, all are invited to the G.S. Hill Gallery on Straight Wharf to meet the inspired designer behind the Nantucket Pearl Company. Pam Freitus will be back on Nantucket, and this year the Nantucket Pearl Company is honoring her with an open house rather than hosting their usual private pearl party. “We wanted to thank all our customers for helping us to create the Nantucket Pearl Company from just a single bracelet design,” explained partner Judi Hill. Pam Freitus’ journey from a career in nursing to one in jewelry design began in 2000, when her husband was transferred to Shanghai, China for three years. A few months into this adventure, Pam’s driver asked if she was interested in pearls. “I love them, they’re my birthstone,” she replied, so he said “I know

Nantucket Traffic Gives Me Hope by Robert P. Barsanti

“Do you want a piece of me?” He did not look tasty. He was well over seventy, bald, with a gray Van Dyke beard, a yellow Vineyard Vines shirt, and a visor. He was standing behind the hood of his white-and-gold Mercedes SUV. His wife had just backed into a Jeep and was ready to drive away until they saw me. I had started recording the two of them. His wife grabbed a piece of paper, wrote on it, and tucked it onto the windshield wiper of the nudged car. They accelerated out of the farm stand parking lot with fingers raised. When I worry about the fate of the world, I am comforted by the traffic on island. Seriously. The island wasn’t really made for cars. Most of the streets were designed for horses, carts, and adventurous pedestrians who could navigate a rolling sidewalk as well as they could a rolling deck. In the mechanical years, the island has adapted fitfully to the presence of cars, but it would be better, really, if everyone would just drive twenty-year-old jeeps, complete with dings, dents, and Nobadeer racing stripes. The parking lots make a lot more sense in a 1995 Wrangler than they do in a 2021 Yukon. On the other hand, America was built for cars. The towns spread out into minimalls and parking lots, with turning lanes, timed traffic lights, and drive-thru lanes. The death of the shopping mall and the rise of delivery services only reinforces that. You don’t have to walk past Banana Republic and Newbury Street Comics in order to stand in a food court, with all of those others, and get an Orange Julius. Now, Americans can sit at home, avoid all of the other people in the mall, and have someone else’s car deliver their Mango Pineapple Premium Fruit Smoothie to their front doors. Americans live in bubbles. They drive with the windows up, the air conditioning buzzing, the directions screen flashing, and Spotify playing the music you remember from forty years ago (as per their algorithm). Screens once popped down from the ceiling, but now the passengers carry their own devices, with their own music, videos, and digital friends. The car bubble now multiplies into one for each passenger. This sanity-saving technology saves you on the MassPike when you are stuck between exits 8 and 9 behind a Market Basket truck and a thousand other souls creeping past the construction. Unfortunately, that same technology and its corresponding mindset cripples you on Nantucket. Driving on Nantucket requires consideration and communication. Rules are broken with the wave of a hand. Permission is given with a glance. Because the island wasn’t build with an eye to cars, everyone who drives out here has to have the empathy of a Kindergarten teacher at recess. Everyone is their own traffic cop. We wave people through the intersection ahead of us, we wave to thank the people behind us, we park with an eye for the people around us. We break out of our bubbles. Nantucketers don’t develop consideration out of some sense of altruism or some higher purpose. No: it’s because we know that the guy we cut off in traffic is continued on page 25

Ick! A Tick! What to Do by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Lone star ticks have been making a lot of headlines in the northeast recently. Historically from south-eastern, south-central, and mid-Atlantic states, their distribution has been expanding. Lone Star ticks can now be found as far west as Colorado and Wyoming and as far north as Maine. They now co-occur with blacklegged ticks in coastal Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket, Tuckernuck, Martha’s Vineyard, Naushon, and Cuttyhunk. Lone Star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) are notable for the distinctive white dot on their reddish-brown body which is actually only found on adult females. The adult males have white dots or streaks on the outer edges of their bodies. Nymphs are smaller and distinguished by reddish-brown bodies and fast speed. When I saw them on a sampling sheet during some recent field research, they seemed to streak along compared to the relatively slow black-legged ticks. Lone Star ticks have similar life stages as the more familiar black-legged ticks —larva, nymph, and adult—but they are able to complete their life cycle in one year instead of two or more. Lone Star ticks are known to be more aggressive than other ticks. Their bite is said to hurt because they have longer mandibles, which might make them easier to detect and remove before disease transmission. The good news is that Lone Star ticks are less likely to carry pathogens than black-legged ticks. Although their infection levels are low in New England, Lone Star ticks can transmit several disease agents and sometimes cause a delayed red meat allergy “alpha-gal syndrome,” which can show up months after a tick bite. Lone Star ticks don’t transmit Lyme’s Disease, but they can carry tularemia, human ehrlichiosis, and STARI (southern tick associated rash illness). There is little known in the medical field about alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) and it is a growing area of research. AGS affects people differently, with symptoms ranging from mild irritation to anaphylactic shock when consuming (or sometimes even smelling) mammalian meat products. Some people, with management over time, have had their allergy go into remission. Dr. Sam Telford, Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health at Tufts University, has been conducting tick research on-island for more than 30 years. He has found Lone Star ticks sporadically throughout that entire time—a single adult male here and an adult female there. Early on he chalked it up to dispersal via bird, human, or dog from other areas. But a few individuals do not make a population. It wasn’t until recently that more of the life stages of the Lone Star tick lifecycle were documented (more adults and nymphs) and in larger numbers. Although they occur primarily in woods and adjacent areas, Lone Star ticks are found in grassy habitats as well, and their abundance in most habitats can far exceed that of blacklegged ticks. On Fire Island, New York, for example, where Lone Star ticks first established in the 1980s, Lone Star nymphs became about five times more abundant than black-legged nymphs over a period of just three years. Lone Star ticks are now the dominant tick species on Long Island. Dr. Telford thinks Nantucket may be headed in that same direction. In 2009, Dr. Telford first sampled on Cuttyhunk Island which is when he was continued on page 22

NCMC Holds a Contest for Sharing Music

July 22-28, 2021

Page 13

by C. Oscar Olson One of the highlights of an evening summer stroll down Main Street, Nantucket is the music flowing about town. This is thanks not only to the performers playing in bars and restaurants all around, but to the buskers who play their music along the sidewalks outside of them. Busking is an age-old tradition around the world, and it is no different here on our island. The concept is simple: musicians of all ages and skill levels take to the streets to practice their craft and earn a little cash as they hone their skills. These street performances not only enhance the island experience, they are also a perfect match with the mission of the Nantucket Community Music Center. For more than 40 years, the NCMC has been the only island organization dedicated to listening, learning, teaching, and performing music. They have a roster of highly qualified, dedicated instructors and offer year-round programs that cultivate music instruction and appreciation. Their students range from 5 to 80, many life-long learners. In their location at 56 Centre Street, they have rooms for lessons, practice, performances, and they have a state-of-the art recording studio. NCMC has worked to create a strong musical environment on Nantucket— one that crosses age, ethnic, social, and economic differences. This summer, the NCMC has added an exciting new feature to their extensive list of lessons and programs. In an effort to seek out more island buskers and encourage the participation of established and aspiring musicians alike, they’re adding a simple incentive. To start, all you need is a recommendation from an NCMC faculty member. Everyone is eligible, so don’t worry if you’re not a student. From there, pick up a Busking License Application from either the NCMC or the Town Administrative Building. With the license in hand, head to the NCMC building on 56 Centre Street to get your NCMC t-shirt. Send them a 60-second video of yourself busking at a Nantucket location wearing your NCMC t-shirt, and NCMC will refund the $50 license fee. Earn $5 for each additional 60-second video you send to them, up to $25 total. That’s $75 and a whole lot of fun. It’s really that simple! For details call NCMC at 508-2283352 or send an email to office@nantucketmusiccenter.org.

Park It on Easy Street

July 22-28, 2021

by C. Oscar Olson

The open air and room to wander is one of the best features of Nantucket, and you just can’t have too much of a good thing. Thanks to the Nantucket Land Bank, there are even more places to roam and relax coming to an island near you. Where once was just a green space by the water is now a lush escape with a gorgeous view of Nantucket Harbor. Perhaps you’ve seen the newest addition to the Land Bank’s portfolio of properties while disembarking the steamship or strolling around town. Located along Easy Street, it’s complete with benches and plantings, sunshine and shade. Though the new flora is still getting established, the new park opened early in June. “The Easy Street Park was designed by Micheal Van Valkanbergh Associates from New York City,” explained Jesse Bell, new Executive Director at the Nantucket Land Bank. “The firm specializes in climate resilient parks.” The first program of its kind in the United States, the Nantucket Land Bank was created by Nantucket’s Planning Commission, later adopted by the voters of Nantucket, and finally established by a special act of the Massachusetts Legislature in 1983. Its sole purpose as a conservation program is to acquire, hold, and care for vital open spaces and unique outdoor areas for the general use and enjoyment of the public. Easy Street Park is among the newest of the Nantucket Land Bank projects. “All the plants were carefully selected for evironmental conditions. The trees are honey locusts, providing dappled shade that won’t obscure the wonderful view,” adds Bell. And, thanks to the Land Bank, the best is yet to come: two more parks are set to open during 2021: a dog park and the new Hayes Park. The dog park will be at the corner of Surfside and Miacomet roads. With excellent elevation and great views, Hayes Park will be a new nine-acre property overlooking The Creeks and Nantucket Harbor. “It will be handicap accessible, great for strollers and wheelchairs,” says Eric Savetsky, former Executive Director of the Land Bank. “There will be tables and benches for everyone to enjoy.” Thanks to organizations like the Land Bank, the island we know and love just keeps getting better. See you at the park!

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

just the place to take you.” That place turned out to be a three-hour drive through small villages. “We ended up on a dirt road lined with tiny shops...that’s when I started learning about pearls,” she explained. She took classes on how to string and knot, and she immersed herself in the culture of China and the knowledge of pearls. At first, Pam’s driver had to translate for her, but over the months she learned Mandarin and was able to speak for herself. It was not until her family returned to Texas that Freitus began to import pearls. By then she had many connections. Her pearl business, which she named Pearlhill, grew so quickly that she retired from nursing to devote all her time to this venture. “I import the strands of pearls, but I do all my own stringing and knotting and wirework, and the designs are mine...Most of my designs are one-of-a-kind because I may never have access to the same pearls: they vary from harvest to harvest.” During a visit to Nantucket in 2008, Freitus visited Judi Hill in her shop (“I’d stop by the G.S.Hill Gallery every time I came to Nantucket.”) Judi admired Pam’s pearl bracelet, and when Pam told Judi the design was hers, a new business opportunity blossomed. “I love to create and design,” said Freitus, “and Judi is amazing at relationships. I took a chance and she took a chance, and it’s been great! I call her my ‘Pearl Partner’.” Nantucket Pearl Company started with just one design, and now their selection has grown to include dozens of necklaces, pendants, earrings, and bracelets. They

Ick! A Tick! from page 11

astonished to see so many Lone Star ticks. After sampling for several years there, he did find all three life stages. Subsequently, other Elizabethan Islands became infested. Similar to Nantucket, sporadic collections of Lone Stars were found on Martha’s Vineyard. Now, all three life stages have been documented. Lone Stars on MV are now widespread across the island, but recently Aquinnah has had the highest rates. Select Board members there are trying to figure out how to address the problem with some even suggesting burning the edges of yards to reduce tick habitat. Nantucketers will do well to keep an eye on how the Vineyard handles this situation. It seems we aren’t far behind. By 2017, Dr. Telford had found nearby Tuckernuck to be highly infested. A new study looking at tick prevalence across Nantucket and Tuckernuck is being led by Dr. Allison Snow, Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, Ohio State University. In her first year of sampling (2020), she found Lone Star ticks abundant on Tuckernuck but rare on Nantucket, with only one adult female and two nymphs detected. This year, however, Dr. Snow reported much higher numbers, indicating the possibility of Lone Star tick population establishment on Nantucket. In Dr. Snow’s field sampling, she encountered an average of 106 Lone Star nymphs and 35 adults per km of trail on Tuckernuck in 2020. In 2021, she was shocked to find the rates tripled to 332 nymphs and 82 adults per km of trail for the same transects. On Nantucket, Dr. Snow has three sampling sites in Madaket. Most of these sites weren’t sampled in 2020 and they are still well below the rates on Tuckernuck. There still haven’t been any documented reports of larvae, but it doesn’t seem too far off, given what we now about Lone Star tick populations from other parts of our region. Dr. Snow is planning for at least a third field season (2022) to compare these rates and get a better idea of what might be regular year-toyear variation in tick numbers or what is potentially the beginning of a pattern of increase.

July 22-28, 2021

Milder winters, as seen with climate change in our region, are one of the proposed reasons for the increase in ticks generally and thought to be why we are seeing Lone Star ticks now. Not only are the conditions more suitable for the ticks, warmer weather may increase the populations of small rodents, like mice and rats, that ticks use as breeding grounds. It’s not all climate change, however. There is still a lot that we don’t know about the nuance of tick populations. There are many other factors at play, such as changes in regional precipitation (and increase in humidity) and increased global transport and travel thus creating vectors for tick distribution increase. On Nantucket, multiple researchers are studying all aspects of ticks: tick biology, species and populations, tick-borne diseases, how to reduce the populations, and how to reduce disease transmission. There may be some overlap but, as with all scientific research, studies build upon each other. We all benefit when there are more researchers studying these issues. For a great online resource that can answer most tick questions and will even go the extra mile, visit the Tick Encounter Resource Center at tickencounter.org, out of the University of Rhode Island. It offers a plethora of regional tick information based in science and with important information from the CDC. You can also share photos of ticks you find and even find resources for having ticks tested for pathogens. Prevention is the best treatment. How can you avoid tick bites? • Avoid known tick habitats: brushy and moist areas (stay on mowed paths and trails) • Tuck your pants inside your socks to make it easier to see ticks • Use repellant. There are many options for sprays or inoculated clothing (DEET and permethrin are preferred). • Regularly check yourself and your family for ticks. Pay close attention to hotspots like armpits, groin, and back. • Treat your pets with medications or tick collars to repel ticks. • Support tick research where possible. The more we know, the better prepared we can be. Don’t forget to enjoy Nantucket! With some preventative measures and a good tick check at the end of the day, you can still enjoy the wonderful nature Nantucket has to offer.

even sell a pearl mask lanyard that can be converted into a necklace. New for 2021 are lots of original earring designs in 14k gold filled: “Gold is coming back in style, with fine, delicate layering...Traditional pearls never go out of style—single strand and the like, so we always have those designs—but women are going back to wearing more delicate jewelry.” As Pam says, “There’s always a time of day for pearls,” and many of her new designs are casual styles with pearls as an accent along with 3mm faceted stones such as lapis, aquamarine, turquoise, sapphire, and others. “I’m using shades of blue for Nantucket to evoke the sky and the water with gold to evoke the sand...When I make a necklace, I usually make several earring sets to compliment it. And the

Vol. 51 No.8 • YesterdaysIsland.com bracelets are often complimentary, but never an exact match,” Freitus explained. This year she has also introduced a new “coil” design: it uses “a pebbleshaped pearl, topdrilled so it looks like a teardrop placed on a stainless steel “memory coil”... and for men we have braided leather and South Sea Pearls. We’re doing a lot of custom orders for men.” Pam Freitus is happy that this new year is bringing new energy: “2020 was painfully slow, but we are rebounding…we’re being more innovative. [The pandemic] shook us out of our niche, but the result is fun and exciting…it’s wonderful to push my boundaries.” Nantucket Pearl Company Open House will be held this Monday and Tuesday, July 26 & 27 from 10am to 9pm, closing for dinner between 5:30 and 6:30 pm each day. Hosts Judi and Greg Hill along with designer Pam Freitus will be on hand to welcome guests and answer questions in the G.S. Hill Gallery, 40 Straight Wharf (just before the Hy-Line dock).

Nantucket Traffic Gives Hope from page 7

the same guy we will beg to come on a Sunday afternoon and unplug the toilets. The women we wave in front of us at Five Corners will be the lady who needs thirty bouquets for her granddaughter’s wedding in October. And the woman in the jeep who blocks four cars in while she picks up sugar donuts will be the same woman who didn’t deflate her tires before she drove onto Nobadeer. “It’s a mutual joint stock world in all meridians; we Nantucketers must help out these Americans.” This summer has been congested. The blame doesn’t entirely lie with the Planning Board, the short term renters, or the ferries. July has been a damp, cool, and beach-lite month. More visitors, faced with a house full of dry towels and folded swim suits, have gone for a quick drive and have wound up piled up on Old South Road or on Surfside Road in front of the high school. But, in spite of that, the drivers keep their windows open while they steer with the right and signal with the left. It’s hard to believe that same good fellowship could happen on Route 9 in Newton. Happily, consideration spreads from the cars. One of the pleasant minor stories on-island involve lost-and-found items. A pair of surfboards was left on the beach, but they were tucked away and returned the next day. Debit cards are left at the Box and picked up the next day. My favorite stories involve lost phones. Unlike the lost dories and surfboards, some lost soul hopes for the return of $1500 worth of digital tether and, generally, gets it: “I lost my phone somewhere between Cliff Road and Fortieth…” Consideration leads to bad habits for some of us. I leave phones, keys, and wallets in some of the strangest places, only to recover them with an apologetic smile and a handshake. Last week, I found myself lost without a pink pen. The pen is pink, so I won’t lose it. So, it failed me. I checked the bank, the drug store, the grocery store, and the car (three times) before I found it on the driving range out at Miacomet. No, I don’t know why I thought I needed a pink fountain pen at a driving range. But the island, in a vast network of consideration for absent minded and the dim, left it in the pro shop. America is full of challenges. We have too many people who think that biology is a faith, that wealth is a right, and that guns are permission. But while the drivers are waving to each other at Five Corners, I will still have some hope.

Featured Restaurant: Easy Street Cantina

Life is Better on Easy Street by C. Oscar Olson

There’s nothing quite like a good, hearty breakfast. Or fresh seafood served piping hot and perfectly prepared. Not to mention a simple sandwich that satisfies, along with subs, salads wraps, or tacos topped off with just what you want. Simply put, Easy Street Cantina has it all. Smack dab in the heart of the harbor area, where Steamboat wharf becomes Broad Street, the menu at Easy Street Cantina has a little bit of everything. Complete with ocean views and dining in or out, takeout or delivery, and a limitless lunch buffet, this restaurant stands out from the crowd. The menu is as mouthwatering as it is eclectic, with small, simple bites or big, bold burgers to please every patron. With kids in tow, we took a table on their spacious brick patio, enjoying the sea breeze and watching people pass by. The boats were coming and going, but our plan was to relax and enjoy a diverse and delicious dinner served up by The

Cantina’s long-time captain of the kitchen Chef Reid. We figured finger food was a good place to begin, so why not Nachos? Served in a pizza box for easy portability, these will satisfy several hungry friends with your choice of chicken, beef, or beans, along with all the fixings. We got the Grande Box of Nachos, which comes complete with all three. The crunchy corn tortilla chips come standard with melty cheese, chopped onions and tomatoes, black olives, sweet corn, cool lettuce, and pickled jalapeños. Served with sides of salsa and sour cream, reach for some of the house hot sauce to kick things up a notch. Easy Street Cantina is one of the few downtown eateries that is perfect for children, with everything they love and lots of fun things to try. Ours love the Cantina’s Popcorn Shrimp for a takeout treat, so couldn’t get enough of the shrimp found in the famous Fisherman’s Platter (cover photo)—fresh, fried, and fully loaded with plump clams, pristine cod, cole slaw, French fries, and, of course, shrimp. The bright, tangy housemade tartar sauce served on the side is some of the best on the island.

Park Picnic Baskets

Grande Box of Nachos

With the new addition of the Easy Street Park and many more outdoor options across Nantucket, takeout has never been more appealing. Everything on the menu can be boxed or bagged for convenient meals any time of day, wherever your Nantucket travels take you. New this year at Easy Street Cantina are Park Picnic Baskets for the easiest takeaway ever. They come complete with chips and water, and your choice of Basil Chicken, Turkey Club, or B.L.T Wrap all boxed up in a convenient tote and ready to go. There’s even a freshly baked cookie from the Nantucket Cookie Company (located within The Cantina) tucked into the Picnic Box for dessert. Call ahead to order picnics for a quick stop on your way.

A smoky take on a taco, the BLTCT is a must-try menu item. It’s a cheesy bacon, lettuce, tomato, and cream cheese taco: so simple yet so delicious! Savory and satisfying, the Vegetarian Bean Burrito will calm even the most voracious carnivores. It’s absolutely oversized, so you’ll need two hands to take on this Classic Chicken Parm superbly packed powerhouse. For some fun in a bun, we had to try the Classic Chicken Parm. It’s piping hot and sized to share, loaded with crispy chicken cutlets and marinara with just the right bite. Hands-down the best burger we’ve had here is the Ack Mack. It is better than youknow-who and topped with lettuce, pickles, and onion over melty American cheese. The very special sauce has all the flavor you know and love and will have you craving another in no time. Breakfast is an opAck Mack tion all day long on Easy Street, so whether you’re waking up early, getting a late start, or just want to satisfy that craving, Easy Street Cantina has you covered. Omelettes are stuffed with the fillings of your favor, Breakfast Sandwiches are satisfying and perfect when you’re on-the-go, and you can make Pancakes a sweet treat morning, noon, or night. As reuben connoisseurs, this delicious deli standard gets met with stern criticism. The Cantina’s Grilled Reuben did not Grilled Reuben

disappoint. Butterycrisp marble rye reveals layers of juicy sliced corned beef and pickled sauerkraut with a healthy helping of Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing. If you like your lobster to speak for itself, Easy Street Cantina has you covered. When making the lobster for the Lobster Lobster Roll Rolls, Chef Reid likes to set a few pounds aside to leave undressed, naked, as is. He warms it on the grill with plenty of butter and lets the sweet red meat do the talking. No matter how you like it, the Lobster Roll is sure to please at Easy Street Cantina. Ours was served on their signature buttery croissant bun, a divine delivery device for this seasonal treat that pairs well with the sweet lobster meat while crisp lettuce adds a crisp, contrasting crunch. If you happen to be downtown on a Thursday, Wing Day at the Cantina is a must-try. Every Thursday, you can chow down on a basket of 16 Jumbo Wings for just $13.95—plain, BBQ, Teriyaki, or Buffalo. Not sure you can eat that much? There’s a Half-Basket option, too.. Check out nantucketcookie.net for great gifts or something to savor later. Also available at the restaurant, you’ll find a variety of sweet treats, real Nantucket sea salt, and our absolute favorite seasoning: Bartholomew’s Nantucket Island Spice. Almost everything on the menu gets a shake of this superb seasoning featuring the flavors of 65 ingredients. You’ll absorb it’s aroma on every plate presented, and there’s a reason it is a staple in our home kitchen. For dessert, we sampled some cool, silky Milk Shakes. Available in a variety of flavors like, Oreo, strawberry, and mocha coffee, it was a challenge to choose just two. Classic Oreo cookie is never a bad idea, and strawberry is a fruity, tasty treat. They say your can’t please everyone, but Bart and the team on Easy Street have found the formula. The food is fresh and flavorful, service is fast, friendly and efficient. We just know we’ll be back before summer comes to a close.
