Three Days Devoted to Design
July 29-August 4, 2021
Page 3
Nantucket Island is known for its rare beauty and unique history. That beauty is alive in the gorgeous groomed hedges of ‘Sconset that surround their meticulously maintained famous rose-covered cottages to the stately, classic mansions of downtown Nantucket whose interiors are carefully planned to combine historic beauty with modern convenience . Much of this beauty is achieved by design, and in celebration of the importance of design in architecture and life, the Nantucket Historical Association is again hosting its Nantucket by Design events. Starting Thursday, August 5, the NHA will honor the highest caliber of creative with three days of stellar events. The 2021 Nantucket by Design will feature internationally known designers, national leaders, local talent, and even work by students of design. At 12 noon on August 5, ticketholders will be served luncheon in the White Elephant Ballroom as they listen to award-winning interior designer Nate Berkus conversing with Stacey Bewkes, founder of Quintessence lifestyle blog. Since Berkus first appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2002, he has become one of the world’s most recognizable interior designers, transforming countless homes around the world through his design work, home collections, books, and television shows. He is also well-known for his socially responsible approach to design, and the Nate Berkus scholarship was established at the New York School of Interior Design in his honor to support students in their pursuit of a career committed to impactful design. Later on Thursday, August 5, renowned interior designer Alexa Hampton will join in on a discussion about how to incorporate antiques into modern interiors with Arie L. Kopelman, former NHA Board Chair. Arie and his wife Coco Kopelman are honorary chairs of The Nantucket Summer Antiques Show Preview Party, which takes place at 6:30 pm the same evening. continued on page 21

Where There’s Always Something New by Suzanne Daub You can see it in the bright colors and attractive patterns. You can see it in the fun, eclectic styles. And you can feel it in the warm welcome as you enter the shop. The Keys have come to Nantucket! The Dress Code at 9 Centre Street is a shop can appeal to women of all ages, styles, and body types with merchandise that is ever-changing. Owner Suzanne Gleason calls her clothing “wearable art” that emphasizes comfort and style. And she carries a wide variety of styles that she is confident customers “probably cannot find elsewhere.” When Gleason opened her main boutique, Zero Dress Code, in Islamorada a decade ago after years in the fashion world, she envisioned a shop that embodied the casual (“no dress code required”) feel of the Florida Keys. In 2017, she opened a second boutique in Ocean Reef Club, and it was there that a customer who summered on Nantucket

Celebrating Maria’s Birthday
This Sunday, August 1, 2021 marks the 203rd birthday of Maria Mitchell, America’s first woman astronomer. Unfortunately, last year due to pandemic restrictions, the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) was forced to cancel her birthday open house that the MMA has been hosting since they opened their doors to the public on 1903. While there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel with restrictions being lifted, this year the MMA felt it was safest to delay their large in-person open house celebration one more year. Typically, Maria Mitchell’s Birthday Open House sees an average of 300 people visiting MMA sites on Vestal Street to enjoy music, birthday refreshments, free museum visits, and a variety of activities and displays for children, families, and adults. To mark her birthday this year, the MMA has devised a trio of activities (with prizes) designed to allow Maria’s birthday festivities to go on while maintaining social distancing and other public safety measures: a historical family scavenger hunt, a photo contest, and a drawing contest! The family scavenger hunt will lead participants on a tour of some of the places where Maria lived, worked, or made new discoveries. Participants can pick up a scavenger hunt map from the brochure box on Vestal Street across from the Research Center, or from one of our open properties, or it can be downloaded from the MMA website at MariaMitchell.org Participants can drop off their completed scavenger hunt sheets in the box outside the Vestal Street Observatory by noon on Saturday, August 14. On Monday, August 16, the MMA will randomly select a completed and correct form and the winner will receive a 2022 MMA Family Membership! Scavenger hunts are a great activity for all ages. And, it’s an activity that was very popular in the nineteenth century, though back then it was more along the

This Friday Is the Start of a Long Hot Summer
As the island heads into its high season and the sun shines brighter and the humidity becomes more frequent, The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is pleased to open a new exhibition entitled Long Hot Summer in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Gallery at 19 Washington Street. This show opens Friday, July 30 and continues through August 16, with the gallery open Monday – Saturday 10 am to 2pm and 2:30 to 5 pm. Friday evenings, the gallery stays open until 6 pm. Gallery hours on Sunday 11 am to 2 pm. “Given this is typically the warmest few weeks on the island, we figured this play on words might entice our artists to bring in some art with a summer time feel to it,” said AAN gallery manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. “The longer days combined with the abundance of flora & fauna in so many of the islands gardens, along with the vast skies and sparkling blue of the sea is a delight to capture for many of our artists,” added Greenhalgh. Each artist has been invited to bring in two pieces, and their works include everything from oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, ceramics, works in wood, mixed media, jewelry and photographs,” said AAN artist director Robert Frazier. Long Hot Summer will be on display from Friday, July 30 through Monday, August 16, in AAN’s downtown gallery, conveniently located a stone’s throw from Main Street in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District. Also ongoing is AAN’s newest online exhibition. Called Light of Day, this show features more than 80 new works of art contrasting different atmospheres and weathers experienced on Nantucket Island. Light of Day exhibition and sale continues through Monday, August 16 And mark your calendars for August 14, when the Annual August Sidewalk Art Show will be held at AAN’s Visual Arts Center on Amelia Drive. To learn more about the Artists Association in-person and online events, exhibits, classes, and workshops, visit their new website at Nantucketarts.org.

Love at First Sight There is such a thing as love at first sight. And it happened last week at the G.S. Hill Gallery at 40 Straight Wharf. A few hours after I sat down with Nantucket artist Gregory S. Hill to chat about his newest work—the largest canvas he has ever painted—it sold to a patron who fell in love with it, unfinished and, at the time, unnamed! The stunning original oil that inspired such feeling is a 36 x 80 painting of Old North Wharf. Though he has captured parts of Old North Wharf in previous paintings, this is the first time Hill has ever done the entire wharf from the Dreamland to the last cottage. And it’s the largest canvas he has ever painted in his distinguished, decades-long career as an artist. Nantucket’s Old North Wharf was originally built in 1770. Though it was destroyed during the Great Fire of 1846, by the 1870s it was again a busy, bustling wharf. G.S. Hill is drawn to this view and loves adding the fine touches that the scene requires. “I’ve had architectural training, so I’m excited to put in the detail.” From the many American flags that typically fly from the cottages and the details of each structure to the reflections in the water, this painting has a depth that draws in a viewer. It’s got an appealing sense of history and romance. Greg chose to set the scene in early morning, when Nantucket’s famous fog is starting to clear, and the mood is quiet, serene, ethereal. “When people look at this painting I hope it’s like a book you can’t put down or a movie you don’t want to end,” commented Greg. Hill has put in the finishing touches, the frame has been ordered, and the painting—newly and aptly named Old North Wharf Magic—will be hanging in the gallery just for a week until its new owner claims it. Stop by the gallery, open daily at 40 Straight Wharf, and experience the magic of G.S. Hill’s vision and art. — Suzanne Daub

by Robert P. Barsanti She had been here a month. From an Ivy League school, emerging from two years of pandemic college education, she stopped off on the back of the vegetable truck on Main Street. By this time in the morning, she was only selling zucchini, broccoli, and a few odd wildflowers. But it was a good day. She was wearing a tie-dye work shirt, white sneakers, and a big smile. “Everyone has been so…nice.” We have a similar taste in premium Berkshire ice cream. Her path had crossed with mine, ever so slightly during her high school years, and, based on that thin reed, we struck up a conversation. Almost everyone passed her with a smile. The sidewalk had women in seersucker jumpers, men in paisley shorts, and workmen delivering a refrigerator. Babies brought us through the morning. They came wobbling up the bricks, bouncing in carriages or carried in Dad’s hands. One young man, in an outfit that only a grandmother could have dreamed up (baby blue shorts and a white shirt with a red cap), stopped and picked up a stem of broccoli. He waved it like a wand. “Do you like broccoli?” She asked. “No.” His mother bought it for 85 cents. He went down the street in his own little adventure, casting vegetable spells on the cars and dogs. She had a question. “I could go to grad school this fall or I could stay here for a semester...What do you think?” “Stay. Absolutely. You’ll never get to do this again. And say yes.” Now, as she packed up the friendless, unmusical broccoli stems and the other unloved vegetables, envy dropped me down the canyon of the years. I was sitting on Jack Pignato’s bench, after all, where he was stationed while he worked at Tonkin, and where he and I would drink illicit Budweisers many, many years ago. He would elevate his pinkie finger as he drank the long-neck, and I see him now, continued on page 24

As an invasive species plant ecologist, I work a lot with non-native plants, their invasion history and how and why plants were transported to the island. One fascinating and little-known fact about invasions on Nantucket actually comes in the form of a small, cute mammal. One of the biggest invasive species problems Nantucket has ever faced was the black-tailed prairie dog. Prairie dog? Yes, the once-abundant rodent of the Great Plains was a Nantucket wash-ashore in the late 1800’s. According to “The Prairie Dog of the Great Plains,” published in 1901 and written by C. Hart Merriam, two pairs of prairie dogs were introduced to Nantucket between 1890 and 1892. They reproduced slowly at first and were regarded as a novelty. On Nantucket, with few predators, there was a lack of natural enemies. Thus, it’s not surprising that within a few years the population exploded. It’s estimated that the population was somewhere in the thousands at its peak by 1899. Apparently, the population became large enough that island residents began to complain. People were “alarmed and feared that the animals would overrun the whole island.” In a letter to C. Hart Merriam, Outram Bangs detailed his visit to Nantucket in 1899, when he counted 200 visible prairie dogs in one colony. He believed that there were three or four colonies of similar size plus an additional few smaller colonies as well as scattered pairs throughout parts of the island. A specimen collected at the time proved it to be the plains species of prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus). This species is now known as the black-tailed prairie dog. Our Nantucket critters likely came from somewhere on the Great Plains between Kansas and Texas. The preferred habitat for the black-tailed prairie dog is dry, short to mid-grass prairies. Nantucket, with its dry sandplain grasslands, fits

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Three Days Devoted to Design
July 29-August 4, 2021

from page 3
Events continue on August 6, with a discussion on architecture and design featuring respected architect and designer Pietro Cicognani and his dear friend and client, actress Isabella Rossellini. Both will take viewers on a videotaped tour of the amazing adaptation they have done of an antique barn and farmhouse in Bellport, Long Island. Pietro will also participate live to discuss the process and his collaboration with Isabella. Rossellini and Cicognani have incredible stories and unstinting focus on design excellence. A Design Panel follows with interior designers Philip Gorrivan, Philip Mitchell, and Joy Moyler moderated by Steele Marcoux of Veranda magazine. NHA’s 2021 Nantucket by Design ends with a live in person presentation with keynote speaker Corey Damen Jenkins in conversation with Chesie Breen. Jenkins mixes vivid colors with layered patterns to create architecturally inspired spaces that are polished, inventive, and unexpected. His bold interiors have graced the front covers of House Beautiful, Traditional Home and more. Televised audiences declared Jenkins the winner of HGTV’s competition series Showhouse Showdown. In addition to the scheduled events, Nantucket by Design “extras” include an online auction, a pop-up shop by The Poppy Caravan, and a exhibition of projects by NYSID students tasked with bringing contemporary design values into NHA hisorical properties. Nantucket by Design is the premier fundraiser for the Nantucket Historical Association; the money raised will allow the NHA to continue the work of keeping Nantucket’s history alive for residents and visitors throughout the year. first started lobbying her to open a shop here. “She never gave up...and she found me this location!” Suzanne explained. “She called me on Mother’s Day and told me... I’m so grateful for her help. I’d always dreamed of having a shop on Nantucket.” A long-time visitor to our island since the early 1990s, Gleason especially loved September on Nantucket for its quiet natural beauty and relaxed way of life. There are so many similarities between Nantucket and the Keys, Gleason commented, and “a vast array of people who visit both.” Pre-Covid, she’d travel twice a year to Italy to find new sources for her stunning styles, many from family-owned makers who’d been in the fashion business for generations in Europe. In her quest for unique brands, she’s forged connections with makers in Australia, France, and Spain, in addition to Italy. And she found some brands in Hawaii that use beautiful lightweight fabrics ideal for summer. Because she works with small artisinal makers, Gleason usually carries just one size run of each style, and “when it’s gone, it’s gone—but there’s always something new!” When Suzanne says The Dress Code on Nantucket has “everything from tshirts to gowns,” she is not exaggerating. There are blouses, skirts, pants, sportswear, dresses, sweaters, and jackets for every occasion, and, to accompany, handcrafted jewelry, sandals, handbags, scarves, and the most amazing hats. “I like items with a story,” she explains as she shows a large display of intricately beaded jewelry from female artisans in Brazil. She truly can dress a woman from head to toe! Many of the styles in The Dress Code are created with great detail using gorgeous fabrics and lots of texture. “I work with one artist who sends me a box of clothing—all hand-done—many one-size-fits-all and each one-of-a-kind...I never know what she’s going to send,” but every piece is a beautiful work of art. She carries the work of another artist, a painter, who “translates her paintings onto Italian silk” to make flattering, flowing apparel. She has UPF 50 clothing that is
wrinkle-resistent and perfect for travel. Her regulation golf and tennis skorts are lightweight, colorful, and fun. Even the demin in The Dress Code is different: “you can buy standard denim online these days,” she said with a shrug. And anyone familiar with Nantucket prices will be pleasantly surprised: everything sold in The Dress Code is affordable. Gleason plans to be open this year in her Nantucket location into October, and to reopen for the holiday season. Don’t wait to stop by the shop at 9 Centre to discover those new pieces to complete your wardrobe—remember: “when it’s gone, it’s gone.” “I pinch myself every day: I’m living a dream that came to fruition!” said Suzanne with a smile. One of the organization’s core missions is to create opportunities for all to develop a life-long passion for science through education, research, and firsthand exploration of the sky, land, and sea of Nantucket Island. In keeping with this mission, the theme of the photo contest is Natural Nantucket. Photos of anything and everything natural and/or native to Nantucket – natural resources, landscapes, flora, fauna, sky, land, sea – are welcome. Though most famous as an astronomer, Maria Mitchell was also a naturalist with profound interest in Nantucket’s flora and fauna. By entering this photo contest, participants can reflect on what Maria Mitchell and the Maria Mitchell Association means to them. This contest has a division for teens (ages 1318) and one for adults (ages 18+). One winner will be selected from each division. Winners will have their work featured on MMA’s social media channels and will receive a 2022 MMA Family Membership along with a new MMA hat. Entries may be posted using the Google form found on MariaMitchell.org through Saturday, August 14, 2021. Say “Yes” to Little Adventures from page 13
in the mist, with a brown bottle at a forty five degree angle. And the benches held other ghosts, their names etched on plaques under my back. I knew them as well. She floated free of the weight of this history. This downtown was hers now, with all of its bikes, babies, and bodies. Her Main Street had flip-flops and halter tops, not the creaky echoes of my history. I have visited this same corner and this same bench dozens of times over dozens of years. Her time is fresh and her time is now. I would love that. Imagine coming to the island for the first time when you are 22, with a job and housing and no expectations. Her first time at Cisco in a storm, her first time when the music makes the house rise on Dave Street, her first time in the Madaket sand, scooping up scallops. The island lay before her as a new found land, ripe with stories and little adventures. I am an old man, I savor familiar fruit; I look at the present through a rear view mirror. I have picked the blueberries and the blackberries, I have shucked the scallops and caught the bluefish; each new experience echoes the old ones. The taste remains rich, but it is reassuring to me. This tastes as I remember; it’s neither particularly better nor worse. Some tastes from the past are gone, like the Deep Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Madaket Mystery. But this only adds to the pleasure and familiarity of the Watermelon Cream. She has no echoes. It’s all new to her. From deep in the canyons of memory, I look up at her on the ridge and envy her descent. I would lose all of my familiar ghosts if only to see the island strange and new again. The island, with its strange land and its stranger people, reveals itself with humility and serendipity. Around the corner, you will find a story that you will tell forty years into the future. At the edge of this bench, you will drink a beer with a man you will only have this moment with. We live in the presence of tiny adventures, that we either accept or ignore. Nantucket, the far away island, sprouts these scrub pine and rosa rugosa. On every street, a little boy waves a broccoli wand. You have to have the mind of a beginner, of a visitor, of a girl on the vegetable truck, to see the magic work. Unfortunately, too many of our visitors ignore the magic. They have been shouting down teenagers in the markets, running down bicyclists on the roads, and blowing up on the sand dunes. They come here with champagne wishes and caviar dreams and are faced with salt water and ocean air. They let the little adventures pass in service to their Instagram fantasies. Perhaps the pandemic has given them a mistaken sense of what they have earned and what they deserve. Instead, on Nantucket, we are all lucky. We got to this elbow of sand out of good fortune, good timing, and privilege. Out here, our little adventures await to fill our stories. Years from now, we won’t be talking about the rude person who wouldn’t let me park in the FAA space or the afternoon they had no Creme Fraiche at the farmstand. We’ll tell about the afternoon we chatted with an old man about ice cream, we’ll remember the golf lesson grandpa gave on the driving range, and the last dinner we had with our parents, when they taught the kids how to eat lobsters. A little boy has enchanted the day with his bunch of broccoli. With the eyes of the young, we can see the magic grow. When we accept his little adventure, we will have stories to tell.

The Problem with Prairie Dogs from page 14
this habitat description, if not the historic range. Currently, black-tailed prairie dogs are found from Nebraska to Montana. Their range used to be much larger, but widespread eradication primarily by ranchers, has limited their range to mainly protected lands. Females are only able to breed once a year, so it is curious how quickly the population grew on Nantucket. However, one male can impregnate multiple females. They reach breeding maturity by age two (if not before), and females can have three to four pups per litter. This reproductive strategy explains why, on Nantucket, there was a lag phase after initial introduction. It wasn’t until a few years later when the population became so abundant that it became a visible problem. In their native range, many prairie dog young don’t survive the first year of life. However, as we know on Nantucket, there are few predators. A few pups could have been picked off by birds of prey. However, in the Midwest, their primary predators are coyotes, badgers, various rattlesnakes, eagles, and hawks. Without most of these predators present, prairie dogs have been found to live up to eight-years-old. Prairie dogs are very social animals. Their colonies, or towns, may contain hundreds of individuals living within a relatively small area. Within the town there are different “neighborhoods.” The females remain with their familial neighborhood, and the males disperse. Each neighborhood, or coterie, is populated by closely related females (sisters, aunts, mothers, etc.). All of these towns are underground with a complex system of tunnels, nesting chambers, and mounds. The burrows measure an average of five to 10 meters in length (16-32 feet) and two to three meters deep (6.5 to 10 feet). Entrances to the burrows are 10-30 centimeters in diameter (4-12 inches). Herein lies the demise of prairie dogs on Nantucket. If it weren’t for deep burrows and wide openings to said burrows, our high school mascot may be the prairie dogs instead of the Whalers. In a time when horses were the primary mode of transportation, and livestock (sheep and some cattle) were the main industry of the day, deep holes in fields were a danger. There were no specific reports of animals injured on Nantucket, but that is often cited as a primary danger by ranchers – that livestock will break legs in prairie dog holes. In the late 1890s on Nantucket, many locals also argued that the prairie dogs were destroying crops and fields. Black-tailed prairie dogs eat primarily leaves, roots, and stems of grasses and forbs. They are ecosystem engineers aerating the soils where their burrows are located. Vegetation within burrows is shorter than surrounding grasslands where black-tailed prairie dogs still exist. For unknown reasons, there are some rare prairie species that only persist in areas with prairie dog burrows, so there is some other affect these creatures are having in the grasslands. If they were still here today, we, as conservationists and land managers, would likely be working with (or around) these critters as we manage for sandplain grasslands, much as land managers in prairie systems are doing in present day. Without a map or description of the 1890s locations of burrows, we may never know which grasslands and fields were home to the black-tailed prairie dogs. By 1900, Nantucketers had declared “war” on these introduced mammals with a bounty placed on them. At a town meeting in 1900, the town created a committee whose sole purpose was to investigate ways to exterminate the prairie dogs. A portion of the town budget—$350—was allotted specifically for their control. In an oral history recording available on the Nantucket Historical Association website, Albert Lewis talked about “Old Henry Brown,” a member of the committee of three people. Apparently, Mr. Brown told Lewis that he was “disgusted” by the prairie dogs after working to try and exterminate them for some time. The committee finally decided on a concentrated, island-wide effort. Another $200 was procured for poison and a plan was hatched. Farmers and others interested worked together on a poisoning scheme. Carbon bisulphide was used to saturate rags which were then placed in the mouths of all the burrows and the holes closed with dirt. The method was successful and all prairie dogs were believed “exterminated” in that year. As W.W. Neifert wrote in February 1900, “…now there is not a dog left to tell the tale.”

Featured Restaurant: Rose & Crown
So Many Ways to Have Fun at The Crown by C. Oscar Olson
Every city and town has one. It’s that local spot that always seems to have a seat waiting or a table ready, happy to serve up some delicious local fare at a fair price. The drinks flow and the smiles glow at Nantucket’s own Rose and Crown. Roomy and accommodating, this island standby is conveniently located in the heart of downtown. It’s a special place on Nantucket where everyone is treated like a local. The menu is diverse, the drinks are delicious, and diners feel right at home. Signs of businesses past and present decorate the high ceilings and walls, bringing back memories of the past while we make new ones. Erected in the 1800s, The Rose and Crown was originally a livery stable for keeping horses and carriages. After that it was home to a gas station and later an art gallery. In the mid-seventies it was transformed into the restaurant we know and love today. Their 40+ years of steadfast service is an island tradition we enjoy every chance we get. Not many restaurants can transform the way Rose and Crown can. Televisions are strategically stationed for those keeping an eye on the game, and things heat up early with talented musicians playing all the hits. The party really gets started after dark with more live music. Bluefish Pate Take it all in on Thurs-
day and Saturday nights with lots of local hitmakers and keep an ear out for special guest appearances. Check their website for details. The drink list is long and diverse, offering everything from custom cocktails, classic wines, and a daunting list of drafts. Mocktails are trending for a reason on and off Nantucket. They’re a fun, flavorful way to stay refreshed while keeping a clear head. The bar proudly provides several options, and we just couldn’t pass them up. The Virgin Lavender Lemonade is sweet and soothing, pretty and pink, with herbal notes of lavender that are far from understated. Our favorite is the PineapCrispy Chicken Skins ple Ginger Beer. It’s opulent and opaque, slightly fizzy, and a beautiful blend of sour and sweet. There are lots of new dishes on the menu this summer, and every one is worth ordering. We started our meal with Nantucket’s new favorite finger-food: The Crispy Chicken Skins. Addictive as they are delicious, these are crunchy, satisfying, and not at all greasy. Perfectly seasoned, too, so who needs French fries? Worth ordering again and again, we loved the slow sizzle of the Cajun-style shimp in the Shrimp and Cheesy Grits. All six of them tender, toothsome, and cooked to perfection. The dangerously cheesy cheddar-laced grits served underneath ties it together and brings it all home. A Crown classic and one of our favorite snacks is the Bluefish Pate. Locally caught bluefish is smoked, seasoned, and smashed Shrimp and Cheesy Grits

Steamed Littlenecks
Vol. 51 No.9 • YesterdaysIsland.com with cream cheese and pickles. Served alongside lavash crackers, it’s not a bit fishy and something everyone will enjoy. You just can’t skip shellfish during an island summer, so make sure to order the Rose & Crown’s Steamed Littlenecks. These little babies are boiled up in local Cisco Whale’s Tale Pale Ale with plenty of garlic and
bacon to boot. Save your spoon to savor the broth. Four rounds of Fried Goat Cheese are served alongside tangy pickled onions and a complex cranberry chutney over a bed of peppery arugula. We love the contrast of crunch and creamy, and the jammy sweet sauce is a cool compliment to the earthy tang of the warm cheese. Our favorite first is the Shrimp and Citrus Salad. It came as quite the pleasant surprise: a marvelous medley of Fried Goat Cheese color, texture, and taste and absolutely loaded with perfectly tender tasty shrimp. Enjoy the cool crisp of fresh greens, ripe and buttery avocado, sweet pineapple and mandarin oranges, with the satisfying crunch of pecans. The Turkey Reuben, otherwise known as a Rachel, is our favorite hand-held on the 2021 summer menu. Sliced tender turkey is piled high with Swiss cheese, sweet remoulade, and crunchy cole slaw sandwiched between buttery-brown pumpernickel grilled crisp. Shrimp and Citrus Salad

We can never say no to a Lobster Roll (cover photo). Served wonderfully warm, it makes this seaside standby more divine for dinner. The buttery brioche roll is toasty and sweet, the fresh lobster was lightly dressed in a lemon butter, and the coleslaw was the perfect side. For comfort food no matter the weather, Braised Short Ribs go for the fork-tender Braised Short Ribs. They glow with a glossy demi-glaze and are served alongside buttery steamed peas and carrots. And we loved the mouth-water contrast of crisp, spicy cabbage, and slow braised beef in the Short Rib Tacos. Served wrapped in fluffy naan bread, the avocado crema adds a spark to every bite. Kids and the kid in all of us will cheer for the Cheddar and Caramelized Apple Grilled Cheese. It’s as good as it sounds with the flavors of sharp cheddar cheese and sweet caramelized apples, smoky bacon jam on crisp, toasted pumpernickel. The fries on the side that came with everything on the Hand-Held section of the menu were crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, with just enough seasoning to keep you coming back for more. A garlic-lover’s dream, the Rose and Crown Pasta was our favorite entree. Their house-made cream sauce is lavish and luscious and laces the linguine with the flavors of cilantro, lime, and shallots. Add grilled chicken or shrimp for something more substantial. Dessert did not disappoint with two Crown classics. The Fried Cheesecake is sweet, crispy, and cool with a delightful tang, served with vanilla ice cream and a caramel drizzle. Two perfect Red Velvet Cupcakes were served a la mode and topped with sweet and satisfying whipped cream. You’ll find Debba, the Queen of The Crown, working every angle of the restaurant. If she’s not showing you to your table, she’ll be taking your drink orders or bringing you dinner. It’s an obvious display of the passion she and the rest of her crew have, making it their mission to see that you and yours leave happy. She and long-time chef Mark Adams make a terrific team, bringing each other’s culinary dreams to life. So come alone, come with friends, or come with family.
