Women+Wellness

August 20-Sept. 2, 2020

Page 3

In 2017 a trio of dynamic women on Nantucket—Meryl Bralower, Melanie Sablehaus, and Jeanine Borthwick—engaged with Nantucket Cottage Hospital to spearhead an effort to empower women on the island, visitors and residents, to take charge of their healthcare. Nantucket Island’s only summer event dedicated exclusively to women’s health returns this month as a free virtual program when Nantucket Cottage Hospital presents the 4th annual Women+Wellness event on Monday, August 24, from 5 to 6 pm. Amid the stresses of the ongoing global pandemic, many people have expressed feeling overwhelmed, excessively tired, foggy, or just simply under mental strain. They may be experiencing something called “emotional labor,” a phenomenon that involves the exertion of energy for the purpose of addressing other people’s feelings, trying to make them feel comfortable, or seeking to live up to social expectations. 2020 Women+Wellness will feature a virtual panel of Nantucket speakers presenting on what emotional labor is, how to recognize it, and resources to help during these challenging times. The presentation will be followed by a live Q&A. Sarah Newton, a strong supporter of NCH and a member of the hospital’s Marketing and Development Committee is chair of this year’s event. Panelists will present a trio of topics. Sarah Munsen, Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Social Services Manager, will discuss “Women and Emotional Labor in the Pandemic Age.” Lera Keller, Doula & Educator at Lera Keller Reproductive Journey Support, will talk about “Preventing Emotional Labor Burnout in Mothers through Support Building and Childbirth Preparation.” And Community Advocate and DEI Consultant Charity Grace Mofsen will present on the topic of “A Moment to a Movement: Sustaining the Emotional Labor.” To register to attend via Zoom and participate in the Q&A, click the link at nantuckethospital.org. You can also watch it live on NCTV Channel 18. This education-focused program is designed to help women make the best decisions they can and to educate the community about resources available at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and its affiliation with the Mass General Brigham healthcare system. For questions about Women+Wellness, call the Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation at 508-825-8250.

The End of Something by Robert P. Barsanti

By now, we can see the end of something. The Yukon from New Jersey, with all of the Cisco stickers and the roof rack is number three on standby and is ready, finally, to head back. The lines are shorter, the parking is easier, and the fog, finally, has been blown away. In the plague year, some of the stores are closing early for the season. Bargains on sweatshirts and candlesticks can be had. After six months of sandwiches and isolation, the youngest one will be getting dropped off at college. In this time, we are happy that he is in fact going to his school; it has a plan, an honor code, and a tracking app. They are implementing the Hogwart’s Protocol, complete with mystic spells, a marauder’s map, and dementors. Our instructions are to drop him off, shut the door quickly, and process sedately down the elm lined road. It will be the end of something, as well. The curse of a parent: as soon as you master a skill, you no longer need it. I learned how to settle a baby, make cheese toast, build Lego castles, and pin a corsage. Now I no longer need to. Old habits remain, old routines repeat. I look for likely playgrounds wherever I go. I make note of nearby Papa Gino’s. I store wipes in my glove compartment. I suppose that the other curse of a parent, a worse one, is to reach a point where you no longer need to learn new skills. I have nothing to offer my son today other than hangover cures and ramen recipes. According to the rules of Hogwarts, he may not return home until Thanksgiving. So, we are looking forward to weeks of light laundry, a full refrigerator, and the remote control remaining just where we left it (somewhere). For the first time in twenty-one years, the house will remain quiet, dusty, and cluttered. I can play all the Xbox I ever wanted to. Everything changes, always. November stretches out there. The leaves will turn, the bluefish will head south, and we may have an election. High school may stay in the hybrid model, or we may be locked down again with our toilet paper, Zoom screens, and canned soup. Both boys may be sent back to the island, or they may, through luck and effort, finish their semesters with grades and a video tan. For sure, they will change. As will their home. Nantucket has been able to squint and smile under the mask then slip in a summer better than we had wished. But, this was the last normal summer. Leases will be lost, mortgage payments will be skipped, and Christmas might be a little thin this year. And next year? What will the change do for Beef Wellington, “The Wizard of Oz,” and Airband? Restaurants, theaters, and bars may not make it through to the vaccine. I suspect the future was at Cisco Brewers last week. The future wore a Vineyard Vines shirt, a ten thousand dollar watch, and a visor. He sat at a table with his back to the hops and a Whales Tale pint glass out of camera range while he checked in on a sales meeting in Florida. Outdoors and alone, free of elevators, conference tables, and bagel buffets: his business had gone from dinosaur to mammal and had shrunk down onto the granite pavers in Cisco. He came here on an Urban Flight; he doesn’t have to catch the Q train to Brooklyn. continued on page 13

ISLAND MEMORIES: NANTUCKET IN 1970

Growing Up in Sconset reminiscing with Robert Egan

Being 18-years-old in the summer of 1970 brought a tension that young men today do not have to face: the draft lottery. The United States was in the midst of the Vietnam War, and on July 1, 1970, numbers were drawn to determine who would be drafted into miliary service. Robert Egan remembers it well: “Three of us were sitting in Rick Glidden’s kitchen on Milk Street as they were rolling out the balls for the draft lottery...we were all sweating it out...As long as you got a number higher than 70, you were okay: I got 115.” Most of the memories Egan shared with us of Siasonset, where he grew up, in 1970 were of happy, halcyon days. “In 1970, it was beautiful...’Sconset was a bike community for kids. There were two sports here in 1970: football and then a lull until basketball started... there was the ‘Sconset Casino here in 1970, but that wasn’t for us, that was for the summer people who were members. But they showed movies, and those were open to the public. “And when we weren’t in class, we were working: we all worked here as kids. If you weren’t lazy, you could make a lot of money on Nantucket. I worked for my Great Uncle Earl Coffin—he was the original ‘Gucci Gardener’ of ‘Sconset.” Robert told us it was 1970 that he had “the realization that there were really wealthy people that could afford to come to Nantucket to play and not work… it made you wonder, is that the way the world is? It motivated kids to work harder...We had a social studies teacher who had been the ambassador to Uruguay. We used to mow his lawn. One day he invited us in for sodas and asked our college plans and about the summer people, he said to us ‘Boys: what you don’t realize is that they work harder than you do. They are just here for a week.’ We thought we were working hard… we didn’t realize until then that we weren’t working hard enough and it motivated us to work harder.” After that “I dreamed of coming back to Nantucket and enjoy the natural beauty without having to work so hard.” Egan ended up starting his own business on Nantucket the next summer, and worked all through his college days at BU. After that “I dreamed of coming back to Nantucket and enjoy the natural beauty without having to work so hard.” Robert Egan worked hard to make his dream come true. After decades of running his own businesses here and off-island, he and his wife Marsha have returned to Nantucket. They may no longer work quite as hard in the businesses they started and own, but they volunteer in many endeavors across the island so that the rest of us can enjoy Nantucket. This season is the 50th year for Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket. We’ve seen many changes on the island during the last half-century, and over the years we have made many changes to our publication. As part of our anniversary celebration, we are publishing memories of our island in 1970 that readers have shared with us. If you have a reminiscence of Nantucket in 1970 to share, please email it to us at yi@nantucket.net or give us a call at 508-228-9165.

EYE ON STYLE

Navigating New Waters & a New Fall Collection In July 2009, Sara Campbell and her business partner Peter Wheeler opened their first pop-up Sara Campbell boutique, off the beaten path at 5 South Street, next to Nantucket Yacht Club. Eleven years later, the store opened seven weeks later than usual due to the pandemic. Dressing rooms were not allowed to open until June 29, just in time for the fourth of July. Things were clearly different this year. This season has been like no other. The company, which designs and manufactures their product in Boston and New York, was on lockdown for three months. All production for summer was halted and the clothes that were “under the needle” for spring delivery abruptly stopped. Twenty-three Sara Campbell stores closed their doors on March 16 as the company laid off 98% of the staff and cash flow became zero. The brand had plans to launce a new ecommerce website this July and it was clearly necessary to accelerate that project. On March 26, a “Pop-Up Online Shop” was launched with all of the women’s apparel product that was currently in the Boston warehouse and local continued on page 19

Appreciating Nantucket's Roadside Flora by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation I am a terrible gardener. I try with my perennial garden beds, but the ecologist in me always wants to leave the plants to their own. Let them fend for themselves. Survival of the fittest is the theme. Needless to say, it's the native plants that don't need much water and the weedy species that persist. Anyone who has read my previous columns knows that I am not a fan of non-native invasive plants. However, the term "weedy" can be used for a number of plants that may be 1) native, but with fast growing, invasive tendencies (think poison ivy) or 2) non-native species that grow well in ruderal habitats such as roadsides, parking lots, and bike paths. Nantucket gardens are a thing of beauty. The Nantucket Garden Club and the Nantucket Lighthouse School both offer tours of secret gardens in different parts of the year. The open space and conservation lands boast the rare sandplain grassland habitats home to various rare species and unique flora, some

of which I've described here previously. Today, however, I'm interested in the tough and hardy. Nantucket, for all of its summer beauty of delicate blossoms, can be a harsh place. Salt spray, high winds, storm surge, dry, sandy soils, and more deer than a plant can handle all make this a formidable place for a plant to grow. On top of all that, think of the road edges and bike paths. The soils are compacted; they are sometimes run over, nibbled on by rabbits, pooped on by dogs, and peed on by the occasional cat. It's a wonder anything can grow. Let's look at the strip of sandy soil between the bike paths and the road. It could be Polpis Road, Hummock Pond Road, or Madaket. Yes, these ruderal places can host invasive plants like spotted knapweed and scotch broom, but they can also be quite beautiful this time of year. The wildflowers and small shrubs

represent the best of Nantucket taking on a tough task for fellow islanders,” said Event Co-Director Jim Pignato. The final push to reach the annual goal is the event, Move the Rock, during the weekend of August 28-30. This event gives islanders and those who care about Nantucket anywhere in the world an opportunity to run, walk, swim, and bike on their own. The format is simple: sign up online at swimacrossamerica.org/movetherock. There are ten different events to choose from and participants can mix or match and do multiple events. Registration is only $25, but a minimum contribution of $50 is suggested and more is welcomed and needed. You can register for single event or for multiple events, and an all-access pass is available for $100. There is a 5k walk category as well, so there’s an event for every fitness level. For those looking for a competitive challenge, there will be an Island King and Queen category which is a 1mile swim, 30-mile bike, and half-marathon run for $100. All participants will be given a t-shirt that salutes our intrepid nurses. “We are hoping that folks use this event to cap off the fundraising campaign while doing something healthy. Not having the annual swim has made it difficult but we see people rising to the challenge and supporting this important community cause,” said Event Co-Director Jill Roethke. “We are looking to Move the Rock to help support cancer care by running, biking, and swimming all over Nantucket (and beyond) and say good-bye to summer the last weekend in August,” said Jim Pignato. All proceeds from the races will support cancer treatment and patient care at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and by Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket. Through the efforts of these organizations and the support of SAA - Nantucket, residents and visitors can receive outstanding cancer treatment and support on-island.

The End of Something

August 20-Sept. 2, 2020

Page 13

High Speed Ferry from page 5

I have not made that switch. Instead, I remain a dinosaur, wishing for ten cent wings at the Atlantic Cafe and Friday afternoons at Thirty Acres. The past remains around me, hidden in shadow and traffic, but there, nonetheless. If I squint, wish, and clap three times… And I still wish for the boys. I wish that they will go to Sesachacha Pond with me and will get thrown around in the water in our games: heave-a-chino, toss-achino, and monster trucks all remain waiting for the right moment. Then, watermelon creams, baths, and Monsters, Inc before bed. Those days were just there. They remain as real as Wing Night and the Tap Room. The future comes, first slowly, then all at once. One Friday night, we are standing in line at the Box then, moments later, we are sitting at picnic tables in the parking lot. We see Jaws in the old Dreamland, then, in the swish of time, we are parked in our cars at the Delta Fields drive-in. One afternoon we stand at the Cruising Game at Fooods while one son resolutely crashes his armored car into everything and in the next moment, he is waving at the end of an elm lined road. Everything becomes obsolete except us. We wish for the mundane everyday of the past. We wish for the old disappeared normal. The present slips away and, in its absence, we wish for another Brownie Supreme with three spoons. By Thanksgiving, today will be a wish. We will wish for cinnamon diamonds, a breaking wave, and a Cheese Special on the beach. And they won’t come. We are at the end of something. He stands in the center of the rear view mirror, waving with one arm and carrying a fan in the other. We fear, and we hope. We fear in the plague ravaged present, locked into a dorm room and an ominous sign in the sky; and we hope that all of the library books, water games, and body surfing will raise him up out of a masked present into a bright future. The old island has slipped away behind him. The new one is up to him and us.

stores. The few employees left on payroll carried the company on their backs for the next five months. “We were very leery of e-commerce shopping, since it doesn’t allow for touching or feeling the beautiful imported fabrics. We also could not get to know the customer in the same way. However, we had no choice but to take the leap! Sara Campbell said. “It was really exciting, especially at first. We used Instagram stories to sell and educate our client about fit, style, detailing, and fabric. This platform has given us a new way to connect with our customers. We get to hear her questions in real time and actually gained a new kind of dialogue with our clients. Now, our Instagram Live Try-OnSessions happen almost weekly. I think the most important lesson through this pandemic is the constant and consistent need to keep com-

municating with our customer. We do not want her to forget us, and we have to really think about how her life has changed since March, Sara said. This year, the foot traffic has been down for obvious reasons. “We often learn that this is our client’s first outing since March. We are so happy that she has chosen us for her first stop, where we do everything feasible to ensure comfort and safety from the virus, says Mary Ann Tralka, the Nantucket boutique manager of seven years. “I was very worried about opening this season. I was not sure what to expect. Many of our customers are in the high-risk category and have not been out shopping this season. Others come in with a big smile and fun mask and are so happy that we are still here! Losing three months of clothing production impacted the brand being able to open its resort stores. They had to shuffle goods to fit the current needs of the customer— favoring styles of a completely casual nature since there was no longer a need for occasion dresses or workwear. The focal point became about what to wear for Zoom calls, casual distanced dinner parties, or virtual graduation parties and weddings.

Because the company controls all its production, it was able to maneuver some good solutions when their factories reopened in mid-June. This new focus presents a challenge that will continue in the months ahead, given the unknowns surrounding COVID-19 and how it will impact consumers’ needs and lives. The fall collection is now arriving in the boutique on South Beach Street. It was styled with a wear-now casual point of view in limited-edition quantities. The dressier pieces were mostly canceled, while more chunky cotton sweaters were quickly designed for boating or cozy hangouts. Many pieces meant for the office were also eliminated and their fabrics (which were already purchased) translated into simpler daytime styles. Sara Campbell’s holiday continued on page 21

Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket collection is designed with a focus on “Home for the Holidays!” as opposed to the feminine, classic holiday party dresses and sportswear that has made up the collection in years past. The line will feature comfortable palazzo pants with fake fur and lots of stretch velvet styles that can be paired with jeans on leggings, along with easy cashmere and cotton knits. Every day brings a new opportunity for the company. In the fall, the pop-up website will transition to a more permanent and sophisticated shopping experience. Just recently, they begun to offer a White Bag White Glove service, which is a virtual experience with the store team resulting with a curated bag of product that can be passed along curbside. It comes in a white bag with a kit of gloves, a mask, and disinfectant. These are very difficult times for small businesses as they face so many unknowns with very little relief. Supporting these stores will propel them into viability for the next season. Without that support, the charming mixture of boutiques after a day on the beach will disappear.

here provide an important habitat for many species of wildlife. Like many plants in this weedy category, they are survivors. A few weeks ago I wrote about milkweeds. The common milkweed thrives in these edge habitats. Right now, as you drive around Nantucket, the blossoms have mostly faded, but the monarch and milkweed tussock moth caterpillars are munching away at the remaining leaves. Just because a plant is no longer blooming doesn’t mean it isn’t still contributing to its surrounding habitat. One obvious blossom right now is the pale blue chicory plant. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is not native, but it has become naturalized: fitting in among the native plants without causing “harm.” Native to the Mediterranean, chicory has been used as a food plant since ancient Egypt. I had the famous chicory coffee in New Orleans a few Chicory photo Wikimedia years ago—it had an earthy flavor that added to the sense of place. Chicory leaves can be a bitter addition to various salad mixes. Aside from the edible parts, of which there are many, chicory is most obvious now while flowering. The bright blue composite flowers are a favorite of many pollinators. The wind-dispersed seeds are favored by birds like

goldfinches. The blooms can be seen through to October and they add nice color to a wildflower bouquet. This last weekend, I was walking the Polpis bike path in search of another invasive plant when I caught a glimpse of a woodpecker (likely a hairy woodpecker) on a common mullein plant. The mullein had finished flowering a week or so ago, and I assumed the woodpecker was going for the insects on the seeds. It was an unusual sight, as I think of woodpeckers on trees not on herbaceous plants, but the woodpecker did its thing for a full five minutes before flying off. Great mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is another nonnative that has naturalised in New England. It was brought to the US from Eurasia in the mid 1700s, apparently as the source of a fish poison. It is easy to identify with its photo Wikimedia nearly 6-foot-tall flowering stalk Mullein covered in small, butter yellow flowers. The large, basal leaves are soft and felt-like. A friend of mine likes to note that these leaves are “nature's toilet paper,” useful in a pinch. Apparently, mullein is known to ward off evil spirits—also good to know in a pinch. And the tall stems have been used to make torches, but please leave them be. Another yellow blossom found along the roadsides right now is the common St. John's-wort (Hypericum perforatum). Like the previous two species, common St. John's-wort is not native, but has been long naturalized in our area. Native continued on page 24

However, it doesn’t produce any nectar, so it’s not good for other pollinators looking for a meal. If cultivating, know that St. John’s-wort spreads aggressively and

This non-native actually is quite invasive, crowding out native species and displacing them. It can be useful, however, as a treatment for poison ivy. The juice that comes from the crushed leaves and stems can sooth skin affected by bug bites and poison ivy. The sunny orange flowers are trumpet shaped with tiny reddish freckles on the petals. I do advocate pulling this plant out, but I have to admire its tenacity. It has one of my most favorite forms of seed dispersal. The seeds are found in pod-shaped, green capsules. When mature, the seeds pull from the sides of the pod causing it to explode - a mode known as “ballistic seed dispersal.” Not surprising once you know one of the other names for continued on page 39

Leave only footprints...

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Island Fun & Shopping Beach Fun Natural History Tour

508-228-6799 Get a front seat view of Nantucket’s best beaches! And our Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge Open daily 9am to 6pm — Permits Required

You’re on Nantucket — now visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest and savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Jeeps rented from Young’s and from Affordable Rentals have the required vehicle permits — all you need to do is add a day pass that you can purchase from Young’s, from Affordable, or from the Gatehouse. ttor.org/ccwr

Where to Take Your Take-Out

There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself! Massachusetts state restrictions on restaurants have begun to ease, and island eateries are offering distanced indoor dining in addition to outdoor table service and takeout. There are still limitations under current guidance, and statewide and local face-covering orders remain in effect. For up-to-date details, visit nantucket.net/COVID-19-FAQ.php Around Town You'll find park benches spaced along most in-town streets. There are a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance.

Drive-By Botany from page 24

jewel weed is “touch-me-not.” I've never tried it, but the seeds are apparently edible and can add a nutty flavor to salads. A common, native plant of these sandy, unforgiving areas are our native goldenrods (Solidago sp.). There are some 14 species of goldenrod found on Nantucket. They are, by far, the most important nectar source for native bees and butterflies during August and September. They also provide food, in the form of seed, for songbirds and small mammals. Contrary to popular thinking, as insect pollinated plants, goldenrods do not cause allergies. They are much maligned for this mistaken identity. The actual culprit of fall allergies is common ragweed whose insignificant greenish flowers produce windblown pollen around the same time the goldenrods are blooming. One of the primary goldenrods along road edges would be seaside goldenrod (Solidago sempirvirens), whose tough, waxy leaves tolerate saline soils and salt spray. Other common goldenrod species of such ruderal areas include Canada goldenrod, downy goldenrod, and gray goldenrod. Many other species enjoy these roadside and bike path habitats: Queen Anne’s lace, poison ivy, red clover, and various grasses, just to make a few. While I would love to see more natives in these spaces, the species that are growing here are providing food and shelter for birds, insects, and small mammals. We have to remember that plants that thrive in these ruderal areas love disturbance and laugh in the face of mowers and weed whackers, often sprouting back larger and with more flowers after a cut. In addition to providing food for wildlife, plants of these areas help us by using the water runoff. When roadways get waterlogged, the runoff can be physically held in natural areas and filtered through the soil. Plants of ruderal areas are tolerant of the runoff waters and many are resistant to salt water. So go take a slow drive or bike ride around the island and admire the wild and tenacious plants that call the edge home. These tough and hardy plants could use a little recognition.
