2012 ANNUAL REPORT

1

Dear Friends, In 1875, a small group of men brought the YMCA to Middle Tennessee with the hope of fostering strong Christian characters in the hearts and minds of young men. They scarcely could have imagined how the small seeds they planted would grow into an organization that in 2012 provided 368,318 people—more than a third of them kids—with the tools and support they needed to learn, grow and thrive. For more than 138 years, our Y has been driven by its Christian mission to create the conditions necessary for people in our community to grow in spirit, mind and body. As Christ’s Parable of the Sower teaches us, lasting change and personal growth only happen when our efforts are rooted “on good ground.” For the Y, history has taught us that this good ground depends on our investment in three critical areas: our kids, our health and our neighbors. Through a shared commitment to Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility, the Y nurtures the potential of children, improves health and well-being and provides opportunities to give back and support neighbors in need. We hope this annual report gives you a sense of the remarkable harvest that is possible when we join hands to grow and nurture the gardens of community. Whether it’s our efforts to address our region’s health crisis, give children the values and skills they need to succeed in life or reaching out to those fighting loneliness or depression, the Y has always been here for our community. And we always will be. Our deepest thanks go to you, the volunteers, donors, friends and staff who bring our mission to life every day. We remain forever grateful to all who joined hands with us in 2012 to plant the seeds of hope that will feed and strengthen our community for generations to come. May God continue to bless each of you, and may He continue to bless the life-changing work of our YMCA.

Our Mission: A worldwide charitable fellowship united by a common loyalty to Jesus Christ for the purpose of helping people grow in spirit, mind and body.

Behold, a sower went out to sow.

And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it. Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. But other seed fell

ON GOOD GROUND And yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirty-fold, some sixty, and some a hundred.

MARK 4:3-8

‘A sower went out to sow his seed …’ Inside every child is the promise of a brighter future—for themselves and our community. That’s why the Y is committed to nurturing these seeds of God-given potential by providing kids the vital support they need to learn, grow and thrive.

OUR STRATEGIES

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT HEALTHY KIDS GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: 1

GIVE THEM A PLACE TO BELONG How a child spends their time away from school can be critical to their future success. The Y gives youth and teens in our community a safe place to belong while offering quality programs and services that make sure our kids’ learning and development does not begin and end with the sound of the school bell.

2

TEACH CRITICAL CHARACTER VALUES AND LIFE SKILLS The Y connects kids to caring adult role models whose example and leadership teach critical character values and life skills ranging from how to get into college to how to be a good sport (and even better citizen).

3

FOSTER HEALTHY HABITS Children reach their full potential when they are healthy in all areas of life—spirit, mind and body. That’s why the Y has committed resources to a wide range of youth wellness programs and initiatives—from diabetes prevention to youth sports—designed to keep kids healthy and reverse our community’s youth obesity rate.

4

GIVE EXTRA LOVE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT Whether it’s providing a literacy tutor to close a child’s achievement gap, a swim lesson in a community with a higher risk of drowning or a mentor to a teen trying to overcome a past mistake, the Y believes in giving every child the chance to thrive, regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances.

OUR VISION By 2020, a third of the youth in our community will experience a sense of belonging through the YMCA, and we will increase our efforts to impact youth in underserved communities, especially those who are most challenged educationally and socio-economically.

HEALTHY LIVING When we live a healthy lifestyle, we create the fertile soil from which we grow and flourish. Unfortunately, the dreams of too many people are withering on the rocky soil of unhealthy habits. The Y is committed to helping everyone become healthier by providing the supportive and nurturing conditions they need to grow stronger in spirit, mind and body.

THE ROOTS OF A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY Research by the Y has has identified nine key conditions a person needs to have a thriving life, no matter your age, income or background. Every day, our programs and services work to provide at least one of these positive outcomes. Health: Practicing positive habits that include physical activity and healthy eating. Achievement: The confidence, competence and satisfaction gleaned from learning, goal attainment and skill building. Belonging: Having the connection to and support of a family, group or community. Relationships: The individual bonds created with and among individuals. Meaning: Having a strong sense of hope, faith and purpose. Safety: The state in which basic physical and emotional needs are being met. Character: Personally accepting and demonstrating positive values. Giving: Acting on the desire to be of service to others. Inspiration: The positive benefits derived from exposure to and engagement with art, culture or nature.

OUR VISION To offer a path for all to live healthier in spirit, mind and body. By 2020, one in five adults in our community will improve their health through the Y and our community’s youth obesity rate will be cut in half.

ON GOOD GROUND: 2012 Financial Summary

2012 was a solid year financially for the YMCA of Middle Tennessee. Membership revenue grew slightly, primarily a result of growth in the number of households who joined the Y to improve their health and wellbeing. Revenue per unit remained roughly flat due to our decision to forego a rate increase. For the second year in a row, program revenue provided strong growth—advancing by almost 3% over the prior year. Although there was no large capital campaign in 2012, as in 2011 for the Nelson Andrews Leadership Center (as evidenced by the $5 million drop in “Other Contributions”), annual giving contributions topped $6 million for the first time in our Y’s history, thanks to the generosity of more than 7,600 donors. Investments to Strengthen Community In July 2012, we completed a comprehensive debt refinancing that reduced our borrowing costs and increased our capacity to invest in the communities we serve. As a result, we were able to spend more than $14 million to repair, refresh, re-brand, and upgrade more than 26 YMCA properties in 2012. These facility investments will ensure a safe and consistent member experience over our entire service area while reducing future operating costs and safeguarding our environment. Even after the effect of these expenditures, earnings before income, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) from operations remained strong at just under $9 million, with positive operating cash flow of approximately $0.3 million. We look forward to continued strong financial performance as we seek to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors in 2013 and beyond. Responsibly yours,

YMCA OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE

Order of the Red Triangle

GEORGE L. YOWELL As an organization founded by volunteers, the YMCA has a longstanding tradition of honoring those who have given generously of their abilities and resources to advance its mission. For 2012, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee is privileged to present its highest volunteer honor to George Yowell.

A Virginia native, George Yowell followed in his older brothers’ footsteps, earning his Eagle Scout before getting a business degree from Virginia Tech and a Masters in Finance from the University of Richmond. He then began a career in banking and by age 32 was elected president of Metropolitan National Bank. George never forgot his Scouts’ oath, and for more than 50 years, has humbly helped countless organizations generate the financial support necessary to further their causes. He served as a chapter chairman, board member and, eventually, Chief Financial Officer of the Young Presidents Organization. As a member of the Science Museum of Virginia board, he chaired a $12 million capital campaign to build a planetarium and space center. George and his family moved to Nashville in 1988 to form Dominion Bank of Middle Tennessee, where he served as president, and his tradition of giving back continued. He was soon named chairman of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce and became active with the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee Council. In 1997, George joined the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee board, on which he continues to serve today. His leadership was instrumental during the Foundation’s most significant period of growth when he served on the Planned Giving Steering Committee for the association’s Vision 2020 Campaign. In 2009, he joined the Association Board and co-chaired the 2009 and 2010 Annual Giving Campaigns, helping our Y raise more than $11 million to help neighbors grow in spirit, mind and body.

George and his wife of 48 years, Norene, are the proud parents of four daughters, and they delight in spending time with their four grandchildren. George keeps busy in retirement, serving on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, Preston Taylor Ministries, Operation Andrew Group and the Massey School at Belmont University. An active member of First Presbyterian Church of Nashville, George started and co-led two Christian Leadership Concepts Bible studies that are still being held today. His contributions to the communities he has called home are countless, and he is indeed deserving of the YMCA’s highest volunteer honor.

BILL WILSON

Being honored by the Y is nothing new for Bill Wilson. As a youngster, he brought home the Blue Feather, the top honor for campers at the YMCA’s Camp Widjiwagan—not once, but twice. His dedication and enthusiasm for the Y only deepened over the years, and in 2012, the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee presented him with its highest honor, the H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award.

Bill has been a true friend to the Y since his days as a camper, and credits the organization with nurturing his commitment to wellness as an adult. He recalls how he became part of a regular running group after leaving the Navy. “I was part of the six o’clock crowd. We waited for the doors to open on the sidewalk, and if you weren’t there by 10 minutes ‘til, you were late! It was very motivational, and those days really cemented my habit of exercise.”

Bill more than returned the favor. As 1995 Sis and Dortch Oldham a volunteer, he became a passionate advocate for the Y’s youth sports programs, and in 1987 was named Association Board Chair. During his tenure, our Y opened its first preschool at the Northwest Family YMCA. Thanks to Bill’s leadership of a $600,000 campaign, the Y was able to improve access to early childhood education in an underserved community. He was also instrumental in recruiting Clark Baker to succeed Adrian Moody as our President and CEO. In 2008, Bill was named chair of the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee, where he spearheaded the creation of “camperships,” new endowment vehicles that allowed Foundation donors to provide summer camp scholarships in perpetuity to deserving children. He also championed the establishment of the Christian Gordon Fund for swim lesson scholarships to honor the memory of the 7-year old lost in a tragic drowning accident. A graduate of Montgomery Bell Academy and Vanderbilt University, Bill also gives generously of his time and resources to support both institutions where he serves as a Director and Trustee. The YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee is proud to honor Bill and to celebrate the impact he has had in our community over the last 30 years. 23
