100 Chairs in 100 Days

Your Logo or Name Here

Martino Gamper Martino Gamper is an Italian Designer he became famous for his work internationally by making ‘100 chairs in 100 days’. Right after his exhibitions around the world he published a book for the process of making his designs. The 100 chairs project has been described by Gamper as ‘There is no perfect chair’. The motivation of the production of the 100 chairs was methodology for Martino Gamper .”The process of making, of producing and absolutely not striving for the perfect one”. This kind of making was very much about restrictions rather for Marino and his team than freedom. Martino Gamper collected discarded chairs from London streets (or more frequently, friends’ homes) over a period of about two years. He designed his chair ideas with his team. In 2007 his first exhibition was held in London. Martino Gampers ideas involved systematically collecting discarded chairs then attempt to transform their character and function. The chairs were to illustrate the context of seating in different forms and their useful functions too

CHAIR DESIGN SKETCHES: I have cut out different parts from various of Martino Gamper 100 chairs in 100 days designs. I’ve made them in a unique way that people would be interested to know the process and the design of it.For this design, the most unique part is the back to its curved look. This design has been used by Martino Gamper many times .

Martino Gamper has a unique chair designs his designs are mainly abstract in their own way. He collected discarded chairs and made them sustainable with unique design

One of the final models I've made from cardboard

This design is mainly inspired by the legs due to its twirled design. I have cut out small parts of Martino Gamper chair designed them into a chair. Many of his designs are very popular and many people replicate his works and even develop them. He has also published a book about his progress in making the chair and how hard he has worked with Your his Logo teak or Name Here

CHAIR DESIGN MODEL IDEAS: For my model ideas I've made different plans that shows step by step of the making of the design. This gives me an overview of where to start from and have a think of the scale Most of my design ideas are made from 2 different chairs and combined them together by sticking the pieces together so it leads to a final chair deign The designs have an abstract look to them due to their disproportion and different parts that are not normally seen on a regular chair Your Logo or Name Here

Materials and their use:

Final design:

Both design would be environmentally sustainable due to the fact I would use old furniture parts and make them into a chair design. I have done some rough sketches of the different parts I would be using different material and how big it would be

CHAIR DESIGN SKETCHES: I have made extra sketches in my sketchbook for my final designs I have written the making of the chairs and what materials I would use. I've tries to think of the café interior and which chair would be very compatible with. +function and the use of function on the chair for what else the chair can be used Your Logo or Name Here

CHAIR DESIGN MODELS

For my third and final chair model I designed a two-legged chair with wires at the bottom attached to it for stabilization. The design is mainly for outdoor furniture for example outdoor café furniture. This design was combined also from different materials, so it has a contrast between the other products

For this chair design I have used different materials. On of the main materials I used was cardboard and foam board. The design is Side view: mainly for café furniture Materials: • Cardboard • Hot glue gun • White cardboard • Foam board

My mainly important point of making this model was thinking of it being both functional but also having something unique to it than any other normal chairs

Front view: For my second chair model I have designed a two-side chair design both are from Martino Gamper chair designs. I have tries to make the design as aesthetic pleasing for both the public eye but also, so it can fit with the Café I have chosen

I have used different thickness of wire for the legs so its more stable at the bottom

Martino Gamper has a unique style of using old furniture and making them into new furniture for both outdoor and in door furniture. Due to this I have made examples Your different Logo or Name Here of materials and the use of it.

KEW GARDENS CAFÉ THEMES: The Kew Garden Pavilion has more of a modern style interior with an outdoor sitting area surrounded by trees and other flora.

KEW GARDEN PAVILION:

THE ORANGERY:

WHITE PEAKS CAFÉ:

I have done some research of the café around the Kew Gardens, and I have chosen the Kew Garden Pavilion for my chair design. I have chosen this site due to the fact is very aesthetic and surrounded mainly by plants and Your Logo or Name Here greenery. I think this space would be a perfect match for my chair design.

CAFÉ INTERIOR MOODBOARD: Paintings, lamp designs and plant examples for the interior space

Chair design for the interior space of the cafe The colour of the walls

Chair design example for the outdoor sitting area

For my mood board I have precisely added more furniture and interior space with a small amount of exterior furniture. My theme would be more natural and organic form like. The space would be mainly for Your Logo or Name customers toHere relax and enjoy their stay.

FINAL CHAIR DESIGN: Side view:

I've drawn a few sketches of the chair design which helps me for parts that I could develop and make it a more functional sitting space

For my final chair design I have added a function that would really in use if you are at the café. I have designed a stool+ a table where you can either put your belongings in a safer place or even magazines/ newspaper

It can also be used as another stool which would be helpful if there is more customers sitting in one place.

Developed of the final design For the development of the final design, I have swapped the legs from the other development making it easier for customers to use. The function of this development is the same as the previous. Closer view of the legs:

The bottom part could be sued for the customers belongings or even magazines and books. The legs would be stable and very comfortable for customers Your Logo or Name Here

Wood joints

Dovetailed Cross Halving: The Dovetail Halving has a strong degree of racking resistance and a hard resistance of breaking them apart. The joint are two identical parts and can be used for different type of furniture

WOOD JOINT RESEARCH: Board Lengthening with Jigsaw Keys:

The Board Lengthening with Jigsaw Keys are not suitable to take apart joint due to its tough to get in and out of the pockets if the fit is perfect

Lapped Dovetail: For the Lapped Dovetail two boards join along their edges. The dovetail shape provides mechanical resistance to pulling them apart it is a great use for decorative effect

Clip Tenons: Clip Tenon's are easily detachable. The two joints lock together enough. To allow them to flex into the mortise joint the long piece bends very well.

Catch Tenon: Catch Tenon is a break down joint. The two parts slid together and are pushed through each other matching their space. The joint is very secure even if coming apart from a strong tension

Oval Shouldered Halving:

For the Oval Shouldered Halving is a simple curve edged half lap joint. The joint has identical parts and its mainly used for decorative and its very stable. The curved of the joint provide extra tensile strength as well as increased glued areas along the sides of the joint.

PRIMARY RESEARCH OF WOOD JOINTS:

The Blind Finger Tenons use examples of pockets along the edge of the joint . Which is also known as a blind joint where the edges are visible from the outside making a nice detail of the sharp edge . These joints can be used for chairs doors etc..

Doweled Mortise and Through Tenon The Dowel Mortise And Through Tenon uses a dowel to prevent the other apart of the joint to slide back. When the dowel is stronger and fits perfectly the joint would be very strong and hard to separate

Blind Finger Tenons:

The Through Finger Tenon joint has similar joints that match its appearance. For example, Fingertip Tenons, Hammer Tenons and Fingertip tenons with a key etc..

Through Finger Tenons:

Top view: Another example of a CNC joint

Through Finger Tenons are an example of a through joint due to the tenons of the perpendicular side is slide through the side

Back side:

Lapped Fingertip Tenons: The CNC joint is a half blind. The details of the joint can be only seen from one side. The joint has a very high resistance once they are together. It's connected from one side to another.

SKETCHES OF WOOD JOINTS:

I have drawn different examples of wood joints from the most basic wood joints to the most difficult. This helped me a lot with finding the perfect joints I could use for my final chair design.

CARDBOARD WOOD JOINTS: Top view: Before starting developing my chair design I’ve made a dowel joint from cardboard to help me with my design on 2D SOFTWARE. The dowel joint would be used for the back of the chair and the arms also.
