HORIZONS JUNE 2022

Naomi Kumagai has been working for Manpower & Organization for over 15 years assisting units in Yokota Air Base, assuring that the number of employees in each office is accurate for the task to be completed. Each employee at the Manpower office is in charge of different units, Kumagai is the point of contact for the Communications Squadron, Contracting Squadron and Medical Group. If these organizations need more employees in their office, Kumagai advises the units what can be done to add the personnel. In order to determine how many employees are needed in each section, Kumagai utilizes the Air Force Manpower Determinant Guidebook (AFMD). However, depending on the unit, the guidebook might have recommendations not suitable for the organization. That’s where Kumagai’s expertise comes in, using her knowledge she utilizes the guidebook to make a decision and accurately determine how many people are needed to ensure that the office

she is assisting doesn’t have a low manning issue. “After working here for over 25 years, I still feel like I learn new things every day. But, if you are the boss of an office and you have to be told that you will gain one more chair you’ll be happy. But, if I have to tell you that I have to take one chair out from your organization that’s when we struggle.” She knows that in order for the Yokota mission to be executed all the units have to be properly manned to get the job done in a timely manner. “We are the helping hand for each unit, to make their daily work a little better.” Before working for Manpower & Organization she worked for the Medical Group, where she gained knowledge and valuable skills that prepared her for her current position. Kumagai takes pride on what she does and cares about all the organizations in Yokota. When Kumagai is not working at Yokota; she enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors. Kumagai is determine to keep exceeding in her job and wants to keep serving the Yokota community.
