SrA TRISTAN VINSON Commander Support Staff Upon graduating high school, Senior Airman Tristan Vinson made the decision to follow in his brother and father’s footsteps and join the military. His father served six years in the army and his brother has been in the Air Force for nine years now. SrA Vinson has served the Yokota Air Base through many different avenues since moving here two-and-a-half years ago working at Fifth Air Force, the Force Support Squadron (FSS) Post Office and FSS Command Support Section (CSS). It’s difficult to describe all of SrA Vinson’s extensive job responsibilities. “Our job really fluctuates on a day-today basis. It’s not really one thing every day,” SrA Vinson explained; but his main purpose as an administrator
within FSS is to provide direct support for leadership. He considers himself to be the “gatekeeper for anything that leadership sees” as he works to “quality control” all of the emails, documents, etc. that leadership receives. He also handles taskers for the squadron that come down from the Wing or MAJCOM, processes Drug Demand Reduction Program (DDRP) notifications and assists fellow FSS staff members. SrA Vinson enjoys that his job is self paced while also allowing him the opportunity to interact with fellow coworkers in the squadron. His long-term goal is to eventually commission and become an intel officer. He is currently enrolled at the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and is on track to graduate with a business administration degree by the end of next year.

LAURA LINDBERG’S JOB IS FAR FROM CONVENTIONAL. WHILE MOST OF US SPEND OUR WORK HOURS SITTING BEHIND A DESK, LAURA SPENDS HERS SITTING ON TOP OF HORSES AT TAMA STABLES.
I
t took years for Laura to turn her favorite pastime into a career. Her horseback riding journey began at the young age of 3 when she rode her neighbor’s horse for the first time. Laura’s mom took notice of her daughter’s fascination with the gentle giants and signed her up for lessons at a nearby stable. Laura rode on and off throughout her childhood and competed in dressage shows and some lowerlevel jumping competitions during her teenage years. After high school, when it came time to decide between a regular career versus a career with horses, Laura chose to take the “normal” career path and attend college. During her last year of school, she completed an internship in Japan and, upon landing a job, decided to stay. After working a typical 9-to-5 information technology (IT) job in Japan for a couple of years, she eventually realized working with horses was where she belonged. It took a lot of work for Laura to become a horseback riding instructor, as the testing to obtain an equine instructor certification in Japan is rigorous. Laura had to complete a practical riding test, interview and written exam all in
◀ WHAT IS DRESSAGE? Laura describes dressage as a synchronized dance — an intricate performance that takes years to master. It’s a team sport that requires mutual respect from both rider and horse. Laura explains that during the best moments in dressage, “The horse is really feeling you, listening to your smallest aids.” It’s an elaborate show that Laura seems to perform effortlessly as she glides across the arena performing advanced dressage movements that require precision and experience on the rider’s part and athleticism from the horse.
Japanese — her second language. After much preparation, Laura passed the test and, to this day, still considers it to be her biggest achievement in horse riding. She’s been teaching at Tama for two years now and loves witnessing her students’ improvement and seeing riders enjoy the sport. For Laura, a typical day at the stables starts at 8 a.m. with feeding the horses, changing out their water buckets and mucking out the stalls. The rest of her day is spent teaching lessons or leading trail and pony rides with barn chores sprinkled in between. It’s often busy at the stables, but when she finds the time, she’s quick to jump on a horse and take part in her favorite sport. But you don’t have to be an expert rider to jump in the saddle at Tama. Even those who have never been near a horse are welcome to hop on and enjoy a trail or pony ride or even take lessons. Laura has found that many beginners’ hesitancy stems from fear, but she encourages them to push past their fears and just “have fun, see how it is and see how you like it.” Rest assured you are in good hands with well trained horses and experienced riders like Laura.
MAKANI
AGE: 7
TAMA’S HORSES HAVE THEIR OWN UNIQUE PERSONALITIES AND SKILL-SETS. ONE THING THEY ALL SHARE IN COMMON: THEIR EXPERIENCE AND THOROUGH TRAINING MAKE THEM IDEAL FOR ALL TYPES OF STUDENTS FROM BEGINNER TO EXPERIENCED RIDERS.
JERO
Don’t let this thoroughbred’s young age fool you — Makani is a sweetheart and favorite among the stable’s more advanced riders because of his youthful energy. Makani was once a racehorse, but his true passion is jumping.
BITS & PIECES
AGE: 19
AGE: 20
Jero is a thoroughbred gelding who, in spite of his stubborn demeanor, is a wonderful lesson horse for all levels. Jero loves to eat and can sometimes get grumpy when disturbed. A slow starter but a wonderful ride once he’s warmed up and ready to go.
Bits offers the whole package as he is used in multiple disciplines including dressage, jumping and trail riding. Bits is cute with a bit of attitude and sometimes likes to test the student riders during lessons. His impeccable barn manners and calm demeanor make him a barn favorite among students and beginners. Bits is Laura’s go-to horse for riding competitions.
MY TIBER
USHIWAKAMARU
AGE: 16
AGE: 12
My Tiber is a thoroughbred gelding ideal for beginner riders. Tiber also excels in dressage and is a calm, smooth ride for first-time trail riders. My Tiber holds a special place in Laura’s heart as she completed the intensive equine instructor certification’s practical riding test on him.
Meet everyone’s favorite little guy at Tama Stables! Ushi is very calm and tolerant making him ideal for pony rides. He is named after a legendary samurai warrior and his name loosely translates to “little but brave.” This adorable pony will surely steal your heart.

Stroll through a one-mile (two-kilometer), scenic forest to reach Jigokudani Yaen-koen — a park that offers guests the chance to observe wild Japanese macaques, fondly known as snow monkeys, in their natural habitat. Jigokudani Yaen-koen may be known for its onsen-bathing snow monkeys in the winter but is also worth a visit in the summer. The monkeys can often be seen resting in the broad-leaved vegetation and eating plants and insects. The rambunctious youngsters are wildly entertaining as they chase and play with family members. Once worn out, the babies cling to their mother’s belly for a quick nap. You’ll want to take photos of the delightful macaques, but don’t get too distracted — the mischievous monkeys are known to steal items from unsuspecting guests. Afterwards, satiate your hunger with a trip to Shinshu Fruitsland. Pick fresh apples straight off the tree. Shop in their store for fresh fruits, treats and souvenirs.

THE AVIATION MAINTENANCE TECHNICIANS MODEL CODE OF CONDUCT The Aviation Maintenance Technicians Model Code of Conduct offers recommendations to advance aviation maintenance technicians' (AMTs) professionalism. The Aviation Maintenance Technicians Model Code of Conduct was released 16 July, 2009 by the project’s Permanent Editorial Board. The Code of Conduct is designed to advance professionalism among AMTs and has benefited from extensive input and review by the aviation maintenance community. The Code of Conduct should enhance safety in the maintenance workplace and in flight operations; promote improved training, appropriate conduct and personal responsibility; encourage the development of good judgment and ethical behavior; and contribute to the aviation community and society at large. It also supports improved communications between AMTs, aircraft owners, pilots, regulators and others in the aviation industry and seeks to make aviation maintenance a more highly respected and rewarding profession. The Code of Conduct presents a vision of excellence in aviation maintenance within its seven sections: 1. General Responsibilities of Aviation Maintenance Technicians 2. Third-Party Safety 3. Training & Proficiency 4. Security 5. Environmental Issues 6. Use of Technology 7. Advancement & Promotion of Aviation Maintenance
LIFE & LEISURE

CLASS SPOTLIGHT HAWAIIAN HULA
Hawaiian hula dancing is deeply embedded within Hawaiian culture, and its roots can be traced back to ancient times. Hula entails more than just learning dance movements as students also learn about nature and the Spirit of Aloha. Many know “aloha” as a common Hawaiian greeting, but in Hawaii, aloha means more than just hello. It’s a sort of moral code that embodies a sense of good character through kindness, grace and compassion. In the Spirit of Aloha, the word aloha is often used as an acronym: Akahai — Kindness Lokahi — Unity or Harmony ‘Olu‘olu — Agreeable or Pleasant Ha‘aha‘a — Humility or Modesty Ahonui — Patience and Perseverance Yokota’s hula instructor, Midori Sudo, intentionally teaches the Hawaiian traditions that are so fundamental to hula dancing. While learning the specific hula dance movements, participants also discover each dance move’s Hawaiian name and the part of nature it embodies. One dance movement might symbolize the sun while another symbolizes a shell. Students then incorporate the movements into a choreographed dance as they move in time to traditional musical instruments like the ipu (a type of gourd instrument) and ukulele both played by Sudo herself. Other dances might be performed to classic Hawaiian songs or even well-known songs like “How Far I’ll Go” from the hit Disney movie Moana. Interested in learning hula? Midori Sudo teaches a kids class at the Natatorium and two adult classes at the Taiyo Community Center. For the class schedule, see pages 25 and 26.
