It’s a beautiful autumn day in Scheveningen. I’m standing on the steps of the Kurhaus, The Steigenberger Five Star Luxury Hotel along the seafront with the new Sri Lankan ambassador, Buddhi Athauda. The sea is spread out in front of us like a blue-grey mirror. There’s a breath of wind and some light surf. The ambassador is eager to talk, but suddenly he goes quiet. He points towards the horizon. ‘Do you see those sailboats in the distance? It’s just like in that painting. Much has changed, but the message is still the same. You as Dutch people have the world at your feet, and you should grasp every opportunity that comes your way!’

t became clear to me. The ambassador had the image of a historic painting in his mind: a large canvas showing the mighty ships from the Dutch East India Company (VOC) rounding the Cape of Good Hope on their voyage to Ceylon – that mysterious, rich spice island. Ceylon, today known as Sri Lanka, has been subject to a variety of different rulers in the past. In 1602, the first Dutch envoy to the Royal Court of Kandy, Joris van Spilbergen landed ashore at the bay of Batticalao with his crew. A few weeks later he was successful in his trade negotiations. Thirty six years later, in 1638 the VOC entered into an agreement with King Rajasinha of Kandy by which he solicited the support of the VOC to combat their mutual enemy – the Portuguese. However, to drive the Portuguese from the island, the Dutch demanded a higher price than the king was able to pay. This was the beginning of VOC rule. Large amounts of spices, including famous Ceylon cinnamon and pepper, along with products such as pearls, ivory coconut and coffee were shipped to Europe and elsewhere. Portuguese fortresses were taken over and new ones were constructed. Ceylon was the crowning glory of the VOC until 1796, when the British took over.

‘Obviously, we don’t want to be colonised again’, says the ambassador. ‘But the fact is that you were the ocean-going freight carriers of the world during the Golden Age. And where are you now? Both our countries act as the gateways to major continents. We could collaborate in so many different ways. We’re situated right alongside the shipping lanes running between Europe, Africa and Asia, with the Indian Ocean and South China Sea as the new focal points of international trade relations. Thousands of vessels use these shipping lanes. What an opportunity for Dutch shipbuilding alone! We’ve recently been through a regrettable, violent period, but our recovery is now in full swing.’ The growing economy of Sri Lanka (the reinstated ancient name means ‘blessed land’) has been going from strength to strength in a trade zone that includes India, Pakistan, Maldives and Bangladesh. These are all emerging countries. Around 1.5 billion people live in the region, and many of them speak English. In Sri Lanka, the stock market in Colombo preformed nearly 100% return in the last two consecutive years and the economy is booming with economic growth rate is the highest in the region. The ambassador adds, ‘The money is there for the taking for business people, including small to medium enterprises.’

Consider the infrastructure that still needs to be put into place, we are spending 12 billion on highway constructions. Many new airports must still be constructed. Negotiations are already underway with NACO – a Dutch airport consultancy firm based in The Hague – that will be developing a new airport for Beijing. Thousands of kilometres of streets and roads must also be laid. ‘The Dutch left us remaining a lot of their heritage. There are still many Dutch influences visible in our culture.’ The ‘Dutch Period Museum’ is located in the capital, Colombo contains the coats of arms of the Dutch fortresses. The ‘Groote Kerk’ can be found in the ‘Dutch’ city of Galle. ‘The old fortress with its battlements has even been declared a UNESCO world heritage site’, boasts my companion proudly. ‘In the streets, you will still notice remains of the Dutch architecture including the famous 17th-century gables. Descendants of Dutch, commonly referred to as ‘burghers’ (citizens) still live in Sri Lanka. Hundreds of Dutch words still form part of the language used in daily conversations’. Effortlessly, the ambassador lists a whole range of these words. He perfectly pronounces ‘aardappel’ (potato). Words like ‘tarappuwa’ (D. ‘trap’ -step), ‘kapoti ‘finished’(D.kapot), and bankolot ‘bankrupt’ (D.bankroet) kamer (room) and zolder (storey) are still encountered in Sinhala. The Roman-Dutch law is Sri Lankan legal system partly based on the old Dutch legal system. As a result of these Dutch influences, the ambassador immediately feels at home in The Hague. He praises the inner city of The Hague, where many specialized shops can be found. His favourite area is the ‘Haagse Bluf shopping area’, where many historic buildings have been reproduced. ‘My memories of Dutch architecture go right back to the days of my youth in Sri Lanka. I feel right at home in The Hague. The city fits me like a tailor-made coat. I find the city centre of The Hague much prettier than that of other major cities in Europe.’ For many years, Mr. Athauda managed his country’s economic presence in this the financial capital of Germany, perhaps even of Europe. Descending from a prominent Sri Lankan political family, he used to be a successful high-tech business executive in the United States. During the 1990’s ‘high-tech boom’, he was instrumental in developing and implementing the business plan for Iridium LLC, the very first company in the world to offer satellite mobile phones. The ambassador is an expert in creating start-ups. It could be said that he sniffs out new opportunities. He’s a real doer who mostly operates on the boundary between economics and politics. He considers it a privilege to have worked with the nephew of former US vice president, Walter Mondale, at Iridium. He loves talking about politics. During his Washington years, he often visited the monument to his idol, George Washington, who practiced leadership without coming on too strong. The Enlightenment philosopher Rousseau once wrote that the ideal, sensible politician has natural authority. ‘He doesn’t have to use strong arguments or excess force. The ideal politician leads without being forceful and convinces without having to prove.’ The ambassador is delighted by these words. The current political father figures with inspirational leadership of Mahinda Rajapaksa the Current President of Sri Lanka whom he believes should be the next Noble Prize winner for world peace. In the ambassador’s eyes, The Hague is a political city just like Washington. ‘These cities even look like one another. Here, too, there are many international organisations that promote justice and peace in the world. I wholeheartedly support these objectives!’ The ambassador remains alone for the time-being, but his wife and three children will be joining him soon. One will be attending the American School in The Hague, while the other two will probably go to a Dutch

school. ‘I’m delighted that my children will be learning Dutch – the language of a country that is important to the world.. ’ His family has visited The Hague before. Of course, they went to the beach on a nice day. Did they swim? ‘No way – we were cold after dipping just one toe in the water. We couldn’t subject ourselves to that.’ The ambassador enthusiastically describes the beach experience enjoyed by the average holidaymaker in Sri Lanka. ‘Do you know why so many people have such wide smiles after swimming in our sea? It’s because they’ve been rejuvenated and are experiencing new energy. Our aqua blue sea is crystal-clear and you can see all the way to the seabed. Swimming in it is almost a spiritual experience’.

There are still many Dutch influences in our culture He sketches a scenic picture for me. ‘Sri Lanka is a stunning paradise with golden sandy beaches and palm leaf huts. The interior of the country boasts of mountains and dense virgin rainforests through which fastflowing rivers stream and water-falls. There are many extraordinary animal species, including 482 bird species and 244 butterfly species.’ And elephants? To my amazement, he immediately gives me an exact answer. ‘Yes, there are 5879 elephants. We know this because we counted them and concluded the study last month.’ Tourism is rising sharply once again. Sri Lanka is famous throughout the world for its hotel staff. ‘At the moment, there is still no direct air link to Colombo, however I’d like to start that within a year, as I have a lot of requests from Dutch tour operators’ the ambassador promises boldly. I feel that I’ve gotten to know the likeable ambassador in just one hour. He’s a very committed person who knows what he wants. The number of staff at the beautiful embassy in Jacob de Graaflaan will certainly be increased in order to accommodate Dutch trade and investment specialists and Sri Lanka diplomatic officers. Conferences and trade missions need to be organised effectively. The ambassador is also very interested in nature-friendly eco-business. ‘Our natural cosmetics industry would like to open a branch in the Netherlands soon. We’re known to have beautiful, smooth skins even until we reach old age. Many of our eighty year-olds don’t have wrinkles. Using age-old plant extracts found in the rain forest, our ancient herbal cosmetics and ayurveda formulas can enhance the beauty and skin of the already beautiful Dutch women. . And who wouldn’t want that?’. ‘This would make a great marriage’, decides the ambassador, ‘our two countries are compatible on so many levels: the Netherlands as the “gateway to Europe” and Sri Lanka as the “gateway to Asia”; your population of 18 million and ours of 21 million. We are business people just like you. But I’m surprised that you’ve allowed so many new emerging countries and their companies to flood our market. Where’s the room for the Dutch in this equation? I want to make sure that you return as friends and business partners.’ With a smile he adds, ‘Remember, we’re the ‘honeymooners paradise’ of the world – a great symbol of co-operation. Right now, there are serious economic problems in Europe and the USA. But Sri Lanka’s future is beckoning!’

Een mooie herfstdag in Scheveningen. Ik sta met de nieuwe ambassadeur van Sri Lanka, Buddhi Athauda, op de trappen van het Kurhaus, van het luxueuze vijfsterrenhotel The Steigenberger aan de boulevardzijde. De zee ligt als een grijsblauwe spiegel voor ons. Een zuchtje wind, een beetje branding. De ambassadeur is een vlotte spreker maar valt plotseling stil. Hij wijst naar de horizon. ‘Zie je het ook? Die paar zeilboten in de verte. Het is als in dat schilderij. Veel is veranderd maar de boodschap is hetzelfde. De wereld ligt open voor jullie Nederlanders. Jullie moeten echt je kansen pakken!’

et is me duidelijk. De ambassadeur heeft het beeld van een historisch schilderij in gedachten. Zo’n groot doek met de machtige schepen van de Verenigde Oost-indische Compagnie (VOC) die om Kaap de Goede Hoop heen zeilden richting Ceylon: het mysterieuze, rijke specerijeneiland. Ceylon, het huidige Sri Lanka, kende een aantal oude koninkrijken. In 1602 landde de eerste Nederlandse afgezant van de Koninklijke Gerechtszaal van Kandy, Joris van Spilbergen, met zijn manschappen in de baai van Batticalao. Een paar weken later kon hij met succes onderhandelingen voeren. 36 jaar later, in 1638, kwam de VOC bij het akkoord met Koning Rajasinha van Kandy aan wie hij de steun van de VOC vroeg om de gemeenschappelijke vijand, de Portugezen, te bestrijden. Maar om de Portugezen van het eiland te verjagen vroegen de Hollanders een hoge prijs die de vorst niet kon betalen. Het werd het begin van de VOC-heerschappij. Grote hoeveelheden specerijen, waaronder de beroemde kaneel van Ceylon en peper, alsook handelsproducten als parels, ivoor, kokosnoten en koffie werden verscheept naar Europa en elders. Forten werden van de Portugezen

overgenomen en vele nieuwe aangelegd. Ceylon werd tot 1796 de parel aan de kroon van de VOC. Toen namen de Britten de heerschappij over. ‘Natuurlijk willen we niet een nieuwe onderwerping’, zegt de ambassadeur. ‘Maar feit is dat jullie de vrachtvaarders van de wereld waren in de Gouden Eeuw. Waar zijn jullie nu? Onze landen zijn beiden de toegangspoort tot grote continenten. Wij kunnen op zoveel gebieden samenwerken. Wij liggen op de vaarroutes tussen Europa, Afrika en Azië met de Indische Oceaan en de Zuid-Chinese Zee als nieuwe centra in de internationale handelsbetrekkingen. Duizenden schepen maken gebruik van die zeewegen. Wat een kansen voor alleen al de Nederlandse scheepsbouw! Wij hebben een zwarte, gewelddadige periode meegemaakt maar nu is de wederopbouw volop gaande.’ Sri Lanka (de oude naam die ‘gezegend land’ betekent, is weer in ere hersteld) heeft een sterk groeiende economie in een handelszone met India, Pakistan, de Malediven en Bangladesh. Allemaal opkomende landen. Zo’n 1.5 miljard mensen wonen er die vaak ook nog eens Engels spreken. In Sri Lanka heeft de aandelenmarkt in Colombo 100% rendement behaald in de laatste 2 opeenvolgende jaren.

Zaken doen in een toeristisch paradijs

De economie ‘boomt’, met een economische groei die de grootste is in de regio. ‘Voor zakenmensen, ook het midden- en kleinbedrijf, ligt het geld voor het oprapen’, aldus de ambassadeur. Neem de infrastructuur die grotendeels nog helemaal moet worden opgebouwd, we spenderen 12 miljard aan de autosnelweginfrastructuur. Tientallen nieuwe vliegvelden moeten worden gebouwd. Besprekingen met het Haagse NACO, het Nederlandse vliegveld-consultancy bedrijf dat voor Bejing een nieuw vliegveld zal ontwikkelen, zijn al gaande. Duizenden kilometers asfalt moeten worden aangelegd. ‘Nederlanders hebben bij ons een streepje voor. In onze cultuur vind je nog zoveel zichtbare Nederlandse invloeden terug.’ In de hoofdstad Colombo is het ‘Dutch Period Museum’ gevestigd. Daar hangen de wapens van Nederlandse forten. In de “Hollandse” stad Galle staat de Groote Kerk. ‘Het oude fort met de vestingwerken staat zelfs op de UNESCO werelderfgoedlijst’, vertelt mijn gesprekspartner trots. ‘In de straten zie je nog de restanten van de Hollandse architectuur met ook de bekende 17-e eeuwse gevels. Er wonen nog afstammelingen van de Nederlandse ‘burghers’ in Sri Lanka. Honderden woorden uit het Nederlands worden nog gewoon gebruikt in het leven van alledag.’ Moeiteloos somt de ambassadeur een hele reeks op. Perfect spreekt hij het woord ‘aardappel’ uit. Ook woorden als ‘tarappuwa’ (NL ‘trap’), ‘kapoti’ (NL ‘kapot’) en ‘bankolot (NL bankroet), ‘kamer’ (NL ‘kamer) en ‘zolder’ (NL ‘zolder) kom je in het Singalees tegen. Het Romaans-Nederlands rechtssysteem van Sri Lanka is deels gebaseerd op de oude Nederlandse wetboeken. Mede vanwege die Hollandse invloeden voelde de ambassadeur zich meteen thuis in Den Haag. Hij roemt de Haagse binnenstad waar je zoveel specialiteitenwinkels hebt. Favoriet gedeelte is het winkelcentrum de Haagse Bluf waar historische panden zijn nagebouwd. ‘Ik herken die Hollandse bouwstijl van mijn jonge jaren in Sri Lanka. Ik voel me op m’n gemak in Den Haag. De stad zit als een jas om me heen. Het Haagse stadscentrum vind ik mooier dan dat van andere grote steden in Europa.‘ De heer Athauda leidde jarenlang de economische post van zijn land in deze financiële hoofdstad van Duitsland en zelfs Europa. Daarvoor was hij, telg uit een beroemde politieke familie uit Sri Lanka, een succesvol ingenieur en zakenman in de Verenigde Staten. In de jaren negentig, tijdens de ‘high tech boom’, speelde hij een grote rol in het ontwerp en implementeerde hij een businessplan voor het bedrijf Iridium LLC dat het eerste bedrijf was ter wereld dat mobiele telefoon per satelliet aanbood. De ambassadeur is gespecialiseerd in het opzetten van start-ups. Hij ruikt als het ware nieuwe kansen. Een echte doener ook die zich beweegt in het grensgebied van economie en politiek. Hij vond het een voorrecht bij Iridium samen te mogen werken met de neef van oudvice president Walter Mondale. Heerlijk om ook over politiek te praten. In zijn Washington-jaren bezocht hij regelmatig het monument van zijn idool George Washington die leiderschap uitoefende zonder dat het er dik bovenop lag. Verlichtingsfilosoof Rousseau schreef ooit: dat de ideale, verstandige politicus een natuurlijk gezag had. ‘Hij behoefde geen krachtige argumenten of een overdaad aan macht te gebruiken. De ideale politicus leidt zonder te dwingen en overtuigt zonder te bewijzen.’ De ambassadeur smult van die woorden. De huidige politieke vaderfiguren met kenmerkend leiderschap is Mahinda Rajapaksa, de huidige president van Sri Lanka, die ervan overtuigd is dat hij de volgende winnaar moet zijn van de Nobelprijs voor de vrede. Den Haag is voor de ambassadeur weer een politieke stad à la Washington. ‘De steden lijken op elkaar. Ook hier heb je vele internationale organisaties die opkomen voor recht en vrede in de wereld. Ik onderschrijf die doelstellingen van harte!’ Hij is nog even alleen maar binnenkort komen zijn echtgenote en drie kinderen over. Een gaat er naar de ‘American School in The Hague’,

de anderen waarschijnlijk naar een Nederlandse school. ‘Prima wanneer mijn kinderen Nederlands leren. Een taal van een belangrijk land in de wereld. Zijn gezin is al even in Den Haag geweest. Natuurlijk trokken ze op een mooie dag naar het strand. De zee in? ‘Nee, met één teen in het water voelden we al de kou. Dat kun je ons niet aandoen.’ De ambassadeur vertelt enthousiast over de strandervaring die de gemiddelde toerist in Sri Lanka zal ondergaan. ‘Weet je waarom bij ons zoveel mensen een glimlach om de mond hebben als ze in zee zijn geweest? Ze zijn herboren, ondervinden een nieuwe energie. Bij ons is de azuurblauwe zee kristalhelder, je kunt de bodem zien. Het is bijna een spirituele gebeurtenis om daarin te baden.’

In onze cultuur vind je nog zoveel Nederlandse invloeden terug Hij schetst mij als het ware een landschapsschilderij. ‘Sri Lanka is echt een paradijs met parelwittestranden en hutten met palmbladen. In het binnenland zijn er bergen en dicht ongerept regenwoud waar snel stromende rivieren en watervallen doorheen stromen. Er zijn vele bijzondere diersoorten zoals 482 vogelsoorten en 244 vlindersoorten.’ Ook olifanten? Tot mijn stomme verbazing krijg ik onmiddellijk een heel precies antwoord: ‘Ja, 5879 want we hebben ze geteld en vorige maand hebben we dat onderzoek afgerond.’ Het toerisme stijgt weer snel. De dienstbaarheid van het Sri Lankese hotelpersoneel is vermaard over de hele wereld. ‘Er is nog geen directe vliegverbinding met Colombo maar binnen een jaar wil ik dat veranderen, aangezien er veel vraag naar is van Nederlandse tour operators’, belooft de ambassadeur kordaat. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik de sympathieke ambassadeur in een uur al aardig heb leren kennen. Hij is een echte doordouwer die weet wat hij wil. Op zijn mooie ambassade aan de Jacob de Graaflaan zal de staf snel groeien met Nederlandse handels- en investeringsspecialisten en diplomaten van Sri Lanka. Seventeenth-century ‘Hofjes’ in The Hague Hofje van Wouw

he Hague is not only the residence of the court, it also has over a hundred beautiful courtyards for almshouses. Before the 19th century such courtyards (“hofjes” in Dutch) were charitable houses built for the elderly poor. In The Netherlands this tradition dates back to the 11th century, although the remaining “hofjes” in The Hague are no older than the 17th century. The Holy Spirit House (Heilige Geesthofje) on the Paviljoensgracht is the oldest original almshouse in the city. Two such “hofjes” stand next to each other on the Lange Beestenmarkt: Hof of Wouw and Hofje Floris van Dam. In Dutch “hofjes” owe their name to the shared courtyard (“hof”) around which the charming individual houses have been built. Perhaps the most impressive of the “hofjes” in The Hague is that of Nieuwkoop on the Prinsegracht. It was designed by the architect Pieter Post and commissioned by Johan de Bruyn van Buytewech, Lord of Nieuwkoop and Achttienhoven, one of the wealthiest residents of The Hague of his time.

In Nederland gaat deze traditie terug tot de 11e eeuw, hoewel de nog bestaande hofjes in Den Haag niet ouder zijn dan de 17e eeuw. Hiervan is het Heilige Geesthofje aan de Paviljoensgracht het oudste oorspronkelijke hofje. Op de Lange Beestenmarkt bevinden zich het Hof van Wouw en het Hofje van Floris van Dam naast elkaar. Hofjes danken hun naam aan de gezamenlijke binnentuin waar omheen de charmante eenspersoonswoningen zijn aangelegd. Wellicht het meest imposante van de Haagse hofjes is dat van Nieuwkoop aan de Prinsegracht. Het is door bouwmeester Pieter Post ontworpen in opdracht van Johan de Bruyn van Buytewech, Heer van Nieuwkoop en Achttienhoven, één van de meest vermogende Hagenaars van zijn tijd. Floris van Dam

The Hague: from hunting castle to the country’s seat of government

The Hague’s historic past goes back to the decision of the Counts of Holland to build a castle in ‘die Hage’ – a space in the forest that, at that time, covered a large part of Holland. The name Holland derived from ‘houtland’, which in English means woodland. At the end of the thirteenth century, the Ridderzaal and the Binnenhof and Buitenhof were added to the castle. On a sand ridge, just to the west, a residential area was built which became known as the city of ‘die Hage’. This is where the late Gothic church the Grote or Sint

Jacobskerk was built in the fifteenth century. We have rival cities in the Golden Age to thank for the fact that the quiet city of The Hague got a governmental function with the arrival of the Staten-Generaal (State General), the Raad van State (Council of State) and the Rekenkamer (General Chamber of Auditors). The stadtholders, and much later, the queen, chose The Hague as their city of residence. The Hague wasn’t the capital of Holland, but was called the Hofstad. In the course of the nineteenth century, The Hague grew in significance as well as in size. As a result of King Willem II, who acted as Maecenas, and Queen Sophia,

the first wife of King Willem III, The Hague became a cultural and artistic hub. They transformed their city of residence into a governmental centre with style.

’s-Gravenhage: van jachtkasteel tot regeringscentrum De geschiedenis van Den Haag begint met het besluit van de graven van Holland een jachtkasteel te bouwen in ‘die Hage’. Dat was een plek in het bos, dat toen een groot deel van Holland (is houtland) bedekte. Aan het eind van de dertiende eeuw werd het kasteel uitgebreid met een Ridderzaal en een Binnen- en Buitenhof. Op een zandrug, iets meer naar het westen, ontwikkelde zich een woonkern, ‘het dorp van die Hage’. Daar werd in de vijftiende eeuw de laatgotische Grote of Sint Jacobskerk gebouwd. Het is aan de rivaliserende grote steden in de Gouden Eeuw te danken dat het rustige ‘s-Gravenhage een bestuurlijke functie kreeg. De Staten-Generaal, de Raad van State en de Rekenkamer vestigden zich hier. De stadhouders en veel later de koningen verkozen Den Haag als residentie. Zo werd ‘s-Gravenhage geen hoofdstad maar wel Hofstad. In de negentiende eeuw nam ‘s-Gravenhage

ast July, when I visited the States, I read the reports on the first gay marriages in summer hot New York. The New York Times published, almost euforical, many pages of testimonials on gay couples who (finally) got married. A kind of public coming out with a non deniable effect. While my kids and I were trying to cope with the heat by cooling off in the lakes in the Hudson valley, I saw our neighbour, who was a physician in NYC, sitting on the beach going through the Times, calling out names of brides and grooms he recognized as directors of a medical centre or of some other established firm. It reminded me of the situation in The Netherlands 10 years ago, when the first gay couples married here. But where people marry, they also divorce. Reason why our firm has almost 10 years of experience in divorcing gay couples. Are there differences between gay marriages and marriages between people of different gender? Yes, there are, as far as the juridical status is concerned regarding children born during marriage. Yes, there are, as far as the international status of the marriage is concerned, simply because not all countries acknowledge gay marriages. But no, there are not, as far as the dissolution of the community property is concerned. At least according to Dutch law. However, people do not always seem to realise that. Last month, during one of our evening opening hours, a nicely dressed gentlemen walked in and explained to me that he had married his Dutch boyfriend 9 months ago. However, it turned out that his husband could not manage to remain faithful to him, reason why he wanted a divorce. Without hard feelings, since he understood his husband, seeing he himself was, in fact, much older. Since he loved him still, he wanted to divorce while granting some of his wealth to the non faithful husband. He asked me for advice on how this could be arranged. After going through the facts, however, I could tell him that it was not necessary to “grant” some wealth since his husband already owned half of it.

It turned out that my client was Spanish, married to a Dutch man in The Netherlands and that they lived here as well. And that there was no marriage contract. According to Dutch international private law, Dutch law is then to be applied on the marital property, resulting in total community of property for both spouses. The Dutch law differs from the Spanish law at this point. He informed me that this had never been the intention, his nor his husband’s. In fact he was quite wealthy; his husband did not even now how wealthy. I then could help him by pointing out a special facility offered by the Minister of Finance, stating that when spouses come to regret the fact that they did not make a marriage contract, they can repair the omission within the first three years of marriage.

In this case his husband, indeed, was not aware of the marital property regime and its consequences. Furthermore he fully cooperated in repairing things to the desired order. I guided both spouses to one of the notaries we work with and the omission was repaired. Naturally, I also provided guidance and advice as far as the actual divorce was concerned. One of my déjà vu moments I gladly share with you.

Texel and Science go Hand in Hand as students of American School of The Hague discover

xpat or local, we all love a day at the beach. For High School students at American School of The Hague, that means something quite different, as they head off to Texel to spend three intensive days working on their second year International Baccalaureate (IB) Science project. They will be studying biodiversity at De Hors, Texel, a unique natural dune area. Sixty-five students of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Systems and Society, and Physics, a busload of science equipment, and the High School Science staff set off for Texel early on a Wednesday morning, not to return until Friday afternoon with projects completed. The students organize themselves into groups across disciplines and select a section of the dune to study. They study bio-diversity by measuring the properties of core samples, analyzing abundance versus diversity in different areas, and measuring surface and ground temperatures along with wind speed to assess the impact on plant growth. The trip is a beehive of scientific activity both at De Hors and in the laboratory facilities at Ecomare, the marine museum located on Texel. With their hypotheses made and samples collected, students move to the laboratory to analyze and test their results. As a culmination, each group presents their findings at a symposium on Friday morning where their peers critique their research.

This project attempts to offer a compressed, yet authentic, scientific research experience to students. The goal is to build a first-hand appreciation for the difficulty of what it means to “know” something in science, given the multitude of factors that impinge on even the simplest of research objectives. Beyond learning, these students develop teamwork skills that are both essential and in demand at our universities, in the workplace, and in daily life. The approach of the School to this required interdisciplinary project has received many accolades at various education conferences. As a school with more than 70 nationalities represented, communication is an essential part of learning. The final word goes to the students as they speak about their experience of this project trip:

“The most important thing is that we learned to adapt to the situation. We designed this procedure, but then being knee deep in water trying to make sure we were doing the tests right was hard but I think we did well because we were able to adapt.” “Science isn’t something you do alone.” “I think communication was important and communicating your ideas so that everyone could understand ….you had to phrase things so that everyone could know what you were talking about.”

Bel Air the Musical! O

n the night of Saturday 3rd September, the long-awaited ‘Bel Air the Musical’ premiered at the Bel Air Hotel in The Hague. Allan Vos, theatre and fashion designer from The Hague, designed a stunning musical premiere collection for the 2nd edition of this museum event. In addition to this, various original theatre costumes from well-known musicals were brought together for the first time in the Netherlands. All of this was on show on an exclusive, one-off basis at the Bel Air Hotel.

The prestigious Centre Pompidou in Paris has especially made forty prized artworks available to The Hague Municipal Museum. PARIS ADVENTURE

THE T

he Paris influence also manifested itself in the Dutch photographers who relocated to Paris during the 1950’s. Paris, where photography was invented, didn’t lose any of its appeal after the war. During this time, a romantic image was captured in which the adventurous nature of Paris is evident. The exhibit featuring Dutch photographers in Paris between 1900 and 1968 proudly displays photographs by Henri Berssenbrugge, Emmy Andriesse, Ed van der Elsken and Johan van der Keuken, amongst others. These striking images each tell their own story and bring the city to life.

e Parijse invloeden komen ook tot leven door de Nederlandse fotografen die in de jaren vijftig naar Parijs trokken. Parijs, waar fotografie is uitgevonden, heeft na de oorlog haar aantrekkingskracht niet verloren. In die tijd is er een romantisch straatbeeld vastgelegd waar het avontuurlijke Parijs zichtbaar is. De tentoonstelling van Nederlandse fotografen in Parijs 1900-1968 laat foto’s zien van o.a. Henri Berssenbrugge, Emmy Andriesse, Ed van der Elsken en Johan van der Keuken. De indrukwekkende beelden hebben allemaal een eigen verhaal en brengen de stad tot leven.

The Scary exhibition is being presented in Museum Meermanno, the oldest book museum in the world. This theme is the brainchild of Adriaan van Dis. Human fascination with unnatural or scary-looking body parts is the focal point of this exhibition. It combines images from medical journals with three-dimensional wax models. This creates a visual palette that illustrates impaired human bodies, mostly dating back to the nineteenth- and twentieth century. Visitors under the age of 12 will only be granted entry if accompanied by an adult. Rumour has it that these sometimes horrific figures are a must!

In het oudste boekenmuseum ter wereld, Museum Meermanno start de tentoonstelling Enge dingen. Het thema is aangedragen door Adriaan van Dis. De menselijke fascinatie voor afwijkende of enge lichaamsdelen staat centraal in deze tentoonstelling. De tentoonstelling combineert beeldmateriaal uit medische boeken met driedimensionale wasmodellen. Hierdoor ontstaat een visueel palet van het aangetaste lichaam uit vooral de negentiende en twintigste eeuw. Jonge bezoekers tot 12 jaar mogen enkel onder begeleiding van een volwassen persoon de tentoonstelling bekijken. Er wordt gefluisterd dat deze soms gruwelijke beelden vragen om gezien te worden.

The Mauritshuis, famous for its stunning collection of 17th-century paintings, is hosting a number of modern masters. In 1987 Amsterdam held the title and in 2001 Rotterdam. The Hague, International City of Peace and Justice, aspires to be the third Dutch Cultural Capital of Europe.

In 1987 haalde Amsterdam de titel en in 2001 Rotterdam. Den Haag, Internationale Stad van Vrede en Recht, zet alles op alles om de derde Nederlandse Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa te zijn.

The Hague is a generous city, rich in culture, with colourful parks and dunes and always near beach and sea. There is so much to be experienced. Yet so much is still hidden from sight. In 2018 The Hague extends its welcome to the world in order to share the cultural treasures with everyone.

The Hague wishes to stimulate cultural awareness and artistic appreciation among its youthful population, and is developing a Culture Education master plan in dialogue with cultural institutions, schools, the government and Europe. The Hague seeks to set an inspiring example for other cities and countries.

Den Haag wil het culturele bewustzijn en de kunstzinnige waardering van jongeren stimuleren en ontwikkelt daarvoor een Deltaplan Cultuureducatie in samenspraak met culturele instellingen, scholen, de overheid en Europa. he Beelden aan Zee museum is the only museum in the Netherlands which focuses exclusively on modern and contemporary international sculpture.

Exhibitions fall 2011- spring 2012 Beelden aan Zee Museum presents, from 23 September to 22 January, the exhibition Everybody! Highlights from the Beelden aan Zee collection. This exhibition reveals the top sculptures from the collection, as well as the passion for collecting sculpture. Following, from January 30 to June 3, the museum shows works from the oeuvre of Jacques Lipchitz (1891-1973), one of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century.

Escher is a world famous artist who creates surreal depictions such as two hands drawing each other, water that flows upwards in a water mill and men walking endlessly around a castle’s courtyard. These and many other prints can be seen at the Lange Voorhout 74 in the former Palace, which was inhabited by four consecutive queens: Emma, Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix of Orange-Nassau.
