There is much-recorded evidence that our ancestors used make-up and styled their hair – Thinking along these lines I instantly visualise the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Elizabethans. There has been much research about the positive effects on our confidence that having your hair done or make-up applied has, and the psychology of beauty is an interesting aspect. A research study from 2017 suggested that wearing make-up makes women feel smarter. It even helps them to enhance their confidence. ... This “lipstick effect” is a common psychological phenomenon that boosts the confidence of a woman when she wears makeup and feels physically more attractive…. BEAUTY
& the psyche “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Beauty, whether looking at a face, a painting or a natural landscape, is a very subjective experience. A moonlit lake may evoke romance to one person while another, perhaps adverse to water, may prefer the warmth of a rug beside a log fire. These differences in personal preferences can also be seen in our perception of physical attractiveness too. Inside the brain the same areas are active when we judge something to be beautiful or displeasing. In the orbitofrontal cortex, our reward centre, activity is increased when we see something attractive while the activity in our motor cortex decreases. This activity is reversed when viewing something we find unattractive. When viewing images of faces well balanced proportions tend to elicit positive responses from participants in scientific studies and 6
these results have been replicated across cultures. The general conclusions for these outcomes suggest we have a biological bias that associates visual regularity with optimum functioning and disease resistance in a potential mate. Hmm, romantic! One major problem with these studies is the diffusion of the subtleties of our individual feelings into wider group data. Large data sets decrease the specifics of experience and therefore is not a true reflection of personal preference. A scientific understanding of beauty is far from complete. It’s fair to say that the brain enjoys patterns. It seems more comfortable when experiencing that which it expects. So while strong, standout features can be strikingly beautiful in their own right, balanced natural beauty will always be appreciated.
www.yourhealthhub.uk Not just a pretty face We have a natural tendency to attribute positive characteristics to attractive people. These subconscious assumptions associate inherent ‘goodness’ with things we find beautiful. Such automatic beliefs can hide the true nature of an individual from us. Studies have shown that attractive people can fall foul of acts of subconscious jealous behaviour from others. For example, they may be less likely to get a job if interviewed by a same sex individual that perceives the potential recruit as more attractive than themselves. Other studies suggest attractiveness can intimidate people which can lead to the impression that these individuals are unapproachable. Beauty does not automatically mean popular, isolation and loneliness can be an issue. Makeup: Are you a highlighter or a concealer? Some ladies feel naked without their makeup on. Others save it only for special occasions. There are no hard and fast rules in our ever evolving culture. Makeup can help us feel more confident, sociable and assertive. We can use makeup to enhance our natural features and correct imperfections. However, it may be a good idea to check in with ourselves occasionally to ask ‘am I highlighting or hiding?’ Creating a psychological mask with your makeup will only hinder the ongoing process of personal development. Love and acceptance of the self is crucial. When appearance becomes an obsession Excessive time spent focusing on how we look maybe a warning sign that all is not well. Eating disorders have had a lot of media attention over the years but Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is not as well known. Individuals with
Try not to be a slave to preconceptions and learnt beliefs. There is much more to us than our appearance. We may all benefit from holding back on those first impression judgments. BDD characteristics can become preoccupied with real or imagined physical flaws in their appearance. Early signs may include excessively checking the mirror, focusing only on a defect or perceived flaw in photos or reflections, avoiding people or places and taking lots of selfies but not being happy with any of them. As this disorder progresses the individual may become further obsessed with changing their appearance. They may spend hours grooming or considering plastic surgery. In extreme cases this can negatively affect normal functioning in areas such as socialising, career and intimate relationships. Many aspects of modern society can contribute to the development of this disorder. The way that we communicate with each other is important here, a flippant comment or opinion may be difficult for an insecure individual to let go. We have a natural tendency to label things as good or bad, nice or nasty, pretty or ugly. Perhaps it’s time for a less opinionated society. Just as Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so are the many assumptions that we come to about ourselves and others, consciously or otherwise. Try not to be a slave to preconceptions and learnt beliefs. There is much more to us than our appearance. We may all benefit from holding back on those first impression judgments.

ALOPECIA ...
a blessing in disguise
In 2013, I first noticed hair loss which culminated in Alopecia Universalis, a type of Alopecia where all body and scalp hair falls out. It is difficult to convey with words the magnitude of the shock and fear I felt when clumps of my hair fell out without even touching it. I found it a traumatic and challenging experience to come to terms with on many levels, a) the hair loss, b) the speed with which it occurred, c) selfacceptance without hair. I now understand my hair loss was a blessing in disguise, a catalyst if you will, forcing me 8
out of hiding, mainly from myself. If in 2013, someone had suggested to me that Alopecia would change my life for the better, I believe my response may have been very negative. Six years on, not only have I regrown the majority of my hair, but I am also happier, healthier, and more confident. I did not like or enjoy losing my hair and would prefer not to have experienced it. However, the symptoms
www.yourhealthhub.uk offered me an opportunity for self-exploration, which I accepted, that has helped me to understand and deal with more healthily, my life experiences to date. Our past experiences and how we may have dealt with them determines what we are currently experiencing in all areas of life, including health.
Six years on, not only have I regrown the majority of my hair, but I am also happier, healthier, and more confident. I did not like or enjoy losing my hair and would prefer not to have experienced it. However, the symptoms offered me an opportunity for self-exploration, which I accepted, that has helped me to understand and deal with more healthily, my life experiences to date. Before Alopecia, I was blissfully unaware of the degree to which ‘stress’, or to put it another way, the ‘psycho-emotional’ component played out in the physical body. While individual stress in itself did not cause hair loss, its accumulation over time most certainly did. The same applies to the vast majority of illnesses and diseases for which there is ever-increasing evidence and is most certainly not exclusive to hair loss. Dr John Sarno, a physician in Connecticut, studied the mind-body relationship for years in his practice and published many books on the subject. He categorically states that “Tension Myositis Syndrome” (TMS), prevalent in our society, is emotionally induced. TMS affects the muscular system creating chronic tension, resulting in painful symptoms such as migraines, shoulder, back & neck pain, amongst a plethora of other illnesses. An estimated ninety per cent of all GP visits in the UK are
stress-related. As this is the case, I believe it is in our best interest, to equip ourselves to deal with stress appropriately as it affects us all. Alopecia grabbed my attention so intensely that it pushed me into taking responsibility and investigating my role in my health. All disease and health concerns offer this opportunity should we choose to view it that way. Taking responsibility is vital if we are to improve our health & wellbeing, which can be fun and is undoubtedly rewarding.

Look Good Feel Better
THE LIPSTICK EFFECT?
Cancer is the second-leading cause of death globally, with 9.6 million people estimated to have died of cancer in 2018. In the UK, over 360,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year having risen by more than 29% since 2001. By 2020, almost one in two people will get cancer at some point in their lives. Positively, there is a dramatic increase in survival rates which have doubled in the last 40 years and in the UK half of all people diagnosed now survive their disease for ten years or more. Being told you have cancer is a traumatic event. In addition to the emotional roller-coaster that the diagnosis can bring to the whole family, there may be visible changes experienced as a consequence of the cancer or its treatment. Sometimes, these changes can have a devastating effect on an individual’s confidence and self-esteem including the worry about how ‘looking sick’ might impact on children, family and friends. Cancer support charity Look Good Feel Better was started as a direct result of a Doctor in the US being extremely concerned about the mental health of a female patient who was so depressed
and self-conscious about how cancer treatment had made her look, that she would not leave her hospital room. The physician, who had contacts in the cosmetics industry, arranged for her to have a make-over. Not only did it transform the way she looked, but more importantly it had a profound effect on her outlook. Her depression lifted and she laughed for the first time in weeks. Operating in the UK now for 25 years, the charity has extended their support from women only to include special sessions for teens and young adults and a dedicated specialised programme for men. The charity provides practical workshop sessions, led by trained volunteer skincare and make-up artists (and local barbers for men’s groups) and they are a setting for people to meet and chat to others undergoing cancer treatment as well as learning useful tips and solutions for issues like missing eyebrows and lashes, sallow or drying skin, or flaking nails. “Going to a workshop was a real eye-opener for me. It was just fantastic to see what a difference it made to get professional guidance - not only to how I looked but genuinely to how I felt as well! And my family noticed the positive difference it made to my confidence, so it was an enormous help to all of them as well, to see me looking and feeling so much better.” Sue, LGFB Beneficiary

www.yourhealthhub.uk It is now widely recognised that how you feel about your appearance is linked to your confidence and self-esteem. Psychologists call this ‘appearance-contingent self-worth’ and ‘appearance self-esteem’. The impact of makeup to both wearer and viewer has been scientifically studied over the years. Faces wearing light makeup have been shown as more positively viewed on facial recognition tests, being described as attractive, trustworthy and more competent than those without make-up or with heavier make-up. “I was reluctant to attend as I thought it wouldn’t be relevant to me, but my wife booked me on! I was surprised that I learnt so much at the session. The advice was relevant, practical and very professionally delivered. My skin had suffered a lot since the chemo and so had my confidence. The psychological impact of cancer is largely unaddressed but trying to stay strong for everyone was emotionally draining. After the session I felt like the man I used to be, all men should go!” Phil, LGFB Beneficiary Beneficiaries of the Look Good Feel Better service regularly report a dramatic return of confidence, which in cases has been so profound as to be life-changing, such as individuals being able to leave their homes after living in self-imposed isolation, through to ‘picking up their life again’ and even returning to work. And for 96% of people, this confidence had remained three months later. The Look Good Feel Better workshops now run in over 130 hospitals and cancer support centres across the UK, from Guernsey right up to the Orkney Islands and over 20,000 people each year receive this free service, with thousands more finding advice through the charities online tutorials and manual for Men. The service is delivered with the amazing support of an army of over 2,600 volunteer beauty consultants. Currently, over 2.5 million people are living
with cancer in the UK, if you know anyone that could benefit from support, please do share this information. If you would like to know more please visit www.lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk. “With two young children, I don’t really have much time for myself, but the LGFB workshop showed me some simple make-up tricks that are so easy and yet make such a difference. Going through cancer treatment really saps you of confidence and you feel so low, but thanks to LGFB, I know that I really do look a whole lot better and it gave me the confidence to complete my Teacher Training and get a job as a Teacher.” Hannah, LGFB Beneficiary As a non-government funded independent charity Look Good Feel Better rely entirely on the generosity of individual and corporate supporters. BROW
confidence
Microblading has been taking the beauty industry by storm over the last few years and here’s why…… It’s not just for the celebs and influencers, it’s a fantastic treatment available to everyone*. Eyebrows really do frame the face and many women (and men for that matter) can lack confidence because of how they feel about 12
their brows. It could be due to years of overplucking - just flash back to the 90s! - or it may simply be that the natural shape of the brows is irregular. Unhappily, a major reason that people can lose their brow confidence is when the natural brow is lost due to medical reasons such as alopecia or chemotherapy. But, whatever the reason, the reality is that many hours are spent every day with brow powders, stencils and pencils trying to create
www.yourhealthhub.uk
a fuller and better shape only for this to be removed at the end of the day and for the battle begin again the next morning. Microblading could be the solution for you. So, what is it and how does it work? Microblading is the art of creating realistic looking eyebrows with the use of a handheld tool and tiny needles. Pigment is implanted into the skin leaving crisp, fine, individual hair strokes making the brows look beautifully natural. The pigment fades over a period of time so a colour boost every year is always recommended to keep them in a tip top condition and unlike a conventional tattoo, you can let them fade out. The procedure is not painful at all as numbing cream is used to ensure comfort during the treatment. It’s important to do your research when choosing a Microblading Technician; always ask to see before, after and healed photos and read client testimonials. Go for a consultation before committing because it’s important that
you trust the person who will be doing your treatment. The treatment must be carried out in a clinical environment which is licenced by the local council and your technician should be fully qualified, licenced and insured to guarantee that you are in safe hands. By following this advice you can enjoy fabulous brows for years to come. *contraindications can prevent the treatment being carried out so a patch test is always needed 48 hours before the treatment.

hair & beauty Hi, my name is Gemma Bond and I’m a freelance hairstylist specialising in wedding/occasion hair. I want to offer some guidance for all brides to be; about picking the right stylist and the things they will organise for you.
Your guide to
WEDDING HAIR 16
First of all congratulations to all you beautiful brides to be! Our wedding day is something we will never forget so having a wonderful hairstyle on the big day is super important. Wedding hair is extremely personal and it takes time to pick the perfect creation and find the right hairstylist for you. Ask for recommendations, look at stylists and their reviews and view their photo gallery to get an idea of what they can achieve. When it comes to cost every hairdresser has their own pricing structure and can vary considerably. Expect to be asked for a deposit to ensure the day is booked for you and so the stylist would not lose out on any other work if the bride cancels last minute. A hairstylist will want to know what time your wedding is, where the desired “getting ready destination is, how many bridesmaids or other wedding party members require hair and also the travel time from one to the other. The hairdresser should always overestimate timewise to ensure there is room for any last-minute changes. Every bride should have a trial before the day. This ensures the stylist and bride to be agree on what is to be achieved on the big day. It also helps the stylist work out how long it will take, the equipment needed and how the hair would need to be prepped either before or on the day. The trials should be around an hour long. I always ask the bride to have a look through pictures for initial ideas and have any headdress (ie. tiara, clips, and fascinator) that she is planning to wear with them on trial day. The hairdresser would also benefit from
www.yourhealthhub.uk
knowing what the bride’s outfit/dress looks like, as it can really help when picking a hairstyle. Some styles will work with certain dresses and not with others. It also gives the bride a chance to see what the hairpiece (if any) looks like with her hairdo. Expectations need to be discussed as sometimes pictures we like don’t look the same on our own hair. Our own hair can be very different from the model’s hair in the photo and we have to work out if the desired style is achievable with their natural hair. If we feel we can create a better look, we may choose to add some hair extensions which give the illusion of length and create fullness too. I always ask brides to bear in mind that photos we see on social media or in magazines are created purely for a photoshoot; we need to be mindful that what we create needs to stay in place for a minimum of 15 hours and choose accordingly to make this happen. The trial I always find is the exciting bit and it certainly makes the bride feel more at ease about the day to come. I also offer trials for any of the other wedding party too as an option. If they chose not to have one I tend to have a chat and ask for picture ideas, that way I know I’m not going into the wedding completely blind! Once the trial is complete, the consultations with the bridal party have taken place then all that is left to happen is the big day itself! Being the stylist for your bride is a very big responsibility, any good hairdresser will take great pride in their work and always go above and beyond to ensure the least amount of
stress for the bride. This is reflected in the pricing, as the job in hand is more lengthy time-wise and also it’s quite a specialist skillset that is used. When choosing your hairdresser it’s so important to feel at ease and to have a good connection with them, this really helps to achieve a great all-round experience. The big day is something I look forward to and where the magic begins. As hairdressers we bring an element of calm, making sure the morning runs as smoothly as possible. I’ve been known to make sure the bride eats, help dress people and tidy up feeling privileged to be a part of the big day.
Here is a last-minute checklist • ask for recommendations • ask to see their previous work • check out reviews • have a phone chat to see if you connect • ask about pricing • have a trial or even two • look for picture ideas • ask as many questions as you like! Your hair’s
SECRET WEAPON
Like a chef choosing the right knife for the right job, or an artist finding the perfect paintbrush for a specific stroke, choosing the right hairbrush should be just as carefully thought through! Using the right hairbrush for your hair type is the secret to gorgeous, shiny locks. Did you know, other than the primary function of brushing or styling hair, hair brushing serves several other important purposes?! Brushing your hair also cleans and massages the scalp

and stimulates the release of a beneficial oil called sebum. Here’s how it works: • Sebum is released by the sebaceous gland at the base of the hair follicle as a result of the gentle hair tugging action caused by brushing. • Brushing the hair cleans the hair shaft follicle and scalp by removing trapped dirt and oils. • Brushing also distributes the sebum, coating, lubricating, and protecting the hair shaft resulting in a healthy glow or sheen and soft flexible hair. • Because sebum protects and moisturises, regular bushing results in hair that is healthier, more manageable, and easier to style. The natural bristles in the Kent brushes are especially good at this. Because each bristle is scaly in texture rather than smooth like the synthetic material, it is an extremely effective material for cleaning the hair shaft, follicle, and scalp, and distributing sebum along the hair shaft. The bristles go either side of the hair strand and the downward motion of brushing means each single strand is cleansed of dirt, dust and other products creating a shine which is impossible with a plastic or nylon brush. The action of the bristle on the hairs shaft smooth’s the hair ‘scales’ so they lie in the
www.yourhealthhub.uk same direction leaving the finished hair shiny and silky looking. It is important to find the right brush with the right mix of strengths and bristle alignments, to suit your hair. For people with thin or thinning hair, using a hairbrush packed with too many bristles or with overly stiff bristles, can apply too much tension to the hair, pulling and removing healthy hair. Equally, while natural bristles are an excellent choice for nearly all hair types, people with very thick or very curly hair, may find a pure bristle product to be a bit too soft to penetrate the hair mass and contact the scalp. If this is you, Kent recommend a blend of natural bristle and nylon. For fine or thinning hair, the Kent Brushes Finest LS9D brush is best for you, and if your hair is neither curly nor thinning then the Classic Shine range or Finest LS17 is best.
Excitingly Kent Brushes have just partnered with Breast Cancer Haven this year and created a hairbrush that can be used by people going through chemotherapy – the Special Edition Breast Cancer Haven PF06 brush. This brush is made from beautiful beechwood and pure bristles and has the Breast Cancer Haven logo inscribed on the brush head. PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) a natural alternative treatment Blood is a very complex liquid and a hidden wonder. Blood works for us non-stop, keeping us alive. As the philosopher and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said: “Blood is a very special juice.” Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) promotes the process of natural tissue regeneration and can be used for dark circles under the eyes, fine lines and wrinkles, general scars, stretch marks or acne scars. It can also be used to treat hair loss and thinning hair. A sample of the client’s blood is taken and placed in a centrifuge where the platelets are separated from the red cells. This is then reinjected back into the area to be treated. Almost 80% of men and 50% of women suffer hair loss at some stage in their life. This 20
disorder is known as Androgenic alopecia. Although there is no known effective cure for this disorder, PRP has been found to be effective. When injected back into the scalp, the PRP acts like a fertiliser in the ground to regenerate and thicken the hair. It can revive dying follicles and also increases the blood supply to the scalp, making it a healthier environment for hair to grow. PRP works by settling inflammation, stimulating the repair cells, rejuvenating and
www.yourhealthhub.uk
stimulating the existing dying follicles and stimulating stem cells. Although PRP has been used for skin rejuvenation since it was first introduced about 10 years ago, the benefits of using it for hair boosting and regrowth have only recently been realised. PRP hair injections are commonly done in three session intervals. Maintenance treatments are then recommended 2-3 times per year. Side effects from the treatment are very unlikely as it’s obtained from your own blood. You may experience some minor discomfort
and a little swelling for 24-48 hours. Results are noticeable within three months. The variation in patients’ results are also dependent on factors such as lifestyle, age, nutrition, smoking and general health.

HERBS
for health & beauty
By Lucy Blunden, Medical Herbalist
Nettle
My favourite hair restorative? Nettle. Yup, stinging nettles are great for the hair. The nettle plant robs the soil of nutrients and then gives them all to us to use. Nettle Rinse Recipe: • Wearing gloves pick a small handful of stinging nettles. • Place in a teapot and cover with boiling water. • Steep for at least 20 mins (overnight is even better) • Use to rinse your hair after *conditioning – do not wash out! (*Make sure it is cool enough first! Ouch…) • Put leftover rinse in a spray bottle to use at night. 22
There are many stories of nettle hair oil restoring colour to grey hair and whilst that sounds a little fanciful to me, let’s give it a go!
Nettle & Rosemary oil: Wearing gloves, pick a good handful of stinging nettles and several sprigs of rosemary • Roughly chop into smallish pieces • Lay on paper to dry for 2-3 days • Place in the top of a double boiler/bainmarie/porringer • Cover with oil (sunflower, olive, grapeseed, sweet almond) • ‘Cook’ for 2 hours. Strain. Bottle in a sterile jar.

Mindful foraging
Please remember that the wildlife needs these plants too. Read my post on foraging here: http://www.lucyblundenherbal. com/wordpress/2019/03/foraging-mindfully/ Nettles are also used by herbalists when treating skin and joint conditions. The nettles are considered to be ‘blood cleansers’. Before you dismiss this idea, when we have these conditions, our blood becomes full of the products of inflammation and the nettles assist in removing them.
Marigold
My all-time favourite herb for the skin is Calendula officinalis. These bright orangey-yellow flowers are full of healing properties for both inner (membranes) and outer skin. Drink it, bathe in it, make oils from it and apply liberally to every available patch of skin. You’ll feel the difference right away. They also contain resins which are anti-fungal – dried and powdered and added to a cornstarch ‘talc’ for feet… Growing it couldn’t be easier and you’ll find it’s everywhere next year if you haven’t harvested all the flowers before they go to seed.
By any other name, we’d all smell as sweet, eh? So many to choose from and they do such wonderful things for our skin and senses. The oil of the wild rose, Rosa canina seed contains substances like collagen and plumps up our skin. The Damascena rose is the dark red rose which herbalists call a ‘hug in a bottle’. It also smells divine. Using this floral water is great as a facial spritz.
Rose
Omega 3
We all know that eating well can improve our skin. Omega 3s are fatty acids which cannot be created in the body. Find them in oily fish such as wild salmon or mackerel and in vegetable oils such as olive and hemp, nuts and seeds. If you’re not getting 3 portions of oily fish per week, think about supplementing. NATURE VS CHEMICALS Hi my name is Margaret and I am the founder of Beautanix natural skin care. I have always been drawn to natural ingredients rather than chemicals and as a 15 year old I would make up avocado face masks in my mother’s kitchen and whipped egg whites with lemon to calm down the excess oil in my skin, along with beer hair masks! For some reason even at that age it seemed natural and pure to use the goodness of nature. After formulating a lotion for my son at 6 years old for his eczema and managing to cure it after 10 days, my attentions turned to my own needs. I was becoming increasingly disillusioned with the products I was using on my face, and after flicking over a packet of a cream I had been using for two years to see what it contained, I was slightly shocked to say the least. I could not see one natural ingredient! It was packed
“Be good to your skin. You’ll wear it every day for the rest of your life” Renee Rouleau 26
with chemicals! The consistency was lovely and the smell was ok but it was doing absolutely nothing for my skin, probably more damage than good. I started to realise that there were a multitude of chemicals hitching a ride on the so called natural products I was buying! Dimethicone was popping up a lot; this ensures a smooth application, giving a flawless complexion and fills in lines. It is designed to seal in moisture. However it is like walking around with cling film on your skin all day. It is not at all healthy and interferes with the skin’s natural functioning such as sweating and temperature regulation,
along with sloughing off dead skin cells. In time, skin will become irritated and prone to outbreaks.
“Invest in your skin. It is going to represent you for a very long time Linden Tyler
Poly Ethelene Glycols (PEGs) are used to bring the product into the skin, to penetrate it easily and to keep the products stable. However it can contain 1,4-dioxane which is reputed to be a probable carcinogen which readily penetrates - not the ideal substance to be smearing all over your face! Mineral oils; this is a by-product of refining crude oil and is used in facial creams, baby lotions, and lipsticks. It is used as an emollient but is said to cause damage to the lymph nodes and liver. Surely it is better to use a plant oil which contains fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants, to soften the skin? Natural oils are a breath of fresh air, as they mimic our own natural oils in our skin so are not foreign in any way and are received really well. They will work hard for your skin but are not in any way harsh. Many are rich in Omega fatty
acids. For example, argon oil contains Omega 6; it protects and regenerates the skin and is good for damaged and mature skin. Camelina oil contains Omega 3 which is hydrating, moisturising and anti-inflammatory. Evening primrose oil is excellent for eczema and acne. Kiwi seed oil containing Omega 3, is great for damaged skin, large pores, fine lines and elasticity. Plant oils contain vitamins A,D and E so altogether these little power houses of nature can really nurture, heal and slow the ageing process‌.I could go on forever bestowing the virtues of plant extracts! So I leave it to you to decide! Chemical laden products or the power of nature? Can Vitamin Drip give you better skin, hair and nails? By Dr Ahmed There are numerous skin supplements and hair care products that can improve the appearance of your skin and hair. IV Vitamins is the new kid on the block. These drips deliver high levels of vitamins and minerals directly into your bloodstream for immediate use. How do these nutrients improve your inner beauty and give you healthier skin, hair and nails?
4 ways to improve your Hair, Skin, and Nails
1
Biotin- Enzyme support Biotin is an essential B vitamin that can improve your skin, hair and nails. This watersoluble vitamin is a cofactor for many enzymes in the body. Its deficiency can lead to many beauty related problems like Hair splitting and thinning, rashes and dry skin and brittle nails that crack easily. Many foods contain biotin including meat, eggs, fish, seeds, nuts, and certain vegetables (such as sweet potatoes). The biotin content of food can be reduced by a variety of processing techniques (e.g. canned foods). Additionally pregnant and breastfeeding women, chronic alcohol use and biotinidase deficiency may require Biotin supplementation. Our Biotin IM shots can easily replenish and restore Biotin levels to normal levels improving the health of your hair, skin, and nails from the inside out.
2
Vitamin C- Collagen support Collagen is a major component of connective tissue in the body such as skin, muscle, joints, bone including tendons. It is the body’s glue that keeps the cells together. Vitamin C is well known to support and stimulate
28
collagen production. Healthy collagen can help to maintain your inner body wellbeing at the same time enhance your looks. Our High dose vitamin C infusions work to improve your wellbeing.
3
Glutathione –Guardian of the cell Glutathione is important and potent antioxidants combating free radicals in the body. It also has anti-ageing and anti melanogenic (skin lightening) properties. It is primarily made up of three amino acids: glutamine, glycine and cysteine and can be depleted because of poor diet, chronic disease, infection, ageing and constant stress.
4
Antioxidants Vitamins - Double benefit Like Glutathione many Vitamins of B type (B complex) and Vitamin C work as antioxidants (detoxifying body= remove free radicals). Our combined IV Vitamin B complex + Vitamin C beauty treatment supports healthy cell function and also prevent cell damage by free radicals. This not only boosts your health but also removes toxins that contribute to hair, skin and nails damage. The result is enhanced beauty with radiant skin, strong nails and healthy hair with overall health benefits.

Q&A Do I need IV Supplements? The first step is to arrange a consultation with Dr Ahmed who is a specialist with many years of experience in blood disorders such as Anaemia - particularly Iron, B12 and Folic acid deficiencies. The consultation will explore your health and fitness, goals and possible remedies. Diagnostic testing may be required and depending on this personalised formulations can be prepared to specifically address your requirements and needs. What is IV Nutrition Therapy? IV therapy involves injections of vitamin and mineral solutions into a vein in the arm; this critically bypasses the gut and can achieve higher concentrations, quicker. Our intravenous protocols are developed by a team of leading medical doctors and pharmacists and are administered safely under the supervision of medically trained doctors. What is involved? We insert a small baby needle into a vein (in the arm/hand) and begin the IV Drip while you relax on a couch. The entire process takes about an hour and we monitor your health at regular intervals (taking blood pressure etc). How quickly will I feel the effects? Patients begin to feel the effects during the IV therapy and continue to improve over
the following days and weeks. This is not surprising as the micronutrients enter the blood directly and are delivered to the body’s cells immediately. What are the uses of IV Nutrition? Lack of nutrients in the diet (e.g. Vegan diet) and or poor gut functioning (e.g. Coeliac disease) in many cases require nutrients to be administered intravenously (IV). In addition, supplementation may be the way forward depending on an individual’s needs. People who come to a clinic for IV Therapy are the same as those who would have bought supplements from the local nutrition or health shops. They are looking to improve health and wellbeing. Managing fatigue, improving performance, and enhancing beauty (skin hair and nails) are the main reasons people choose to have these treatments. How long do the effects of IV therapy last? You will feel the benefits immediately but how long it will last varies depending on the individual and their lifestyle. In some cases, IV therapy may need to be repeated at 2-3 month intervals to maintain wellbeing. Who should not receive IV Nutrition? This is a form of supplementation and anyone can be treated with IV Therapy. However, if you have any long-term illnesses or are pregnant, please discuss with us. Please note that these preparations of Vitamins and minerals are classified by the MHRA for non- medicinal use only (nutritional supplementation).

ABOUT Wendy Cousins and Tocolo Tocolo was founded in 2011 by Wendy Cousins. It is a Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulated clinic based in Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire. The clinic ethos is to provide affordable high quality health and wellbeing aesthetic treatments. Minor surgery for cosmetic dermatology is a service that has recently been developed at Tocolo due to an increasing number of requests from patients wanting lumps and bumps removed. The NHS are no longer able to remove blemishes for purely cosmetic reasons and having them done privately has proved to be a very costly treatment. Wendy aims to offer a safe and affordable minor surgery clinic as an alternative to the high end prices currently available.

Advanced cosmetic procedures (ACP) and skin treatments Often through the summer, or at special occasions people expose areas of their skin which they usually keep covered. This may cause concern and sometimes distress to anyone who is self-conscious about displaying any skin blemishes they may have. ACP can remove milia, blood spots, skin tags, thread veins, warts, verruca, sebaceous keratosis, xanthelasma, age spots, dermal cysts and syringoma. These blemishes can appear anywhere on the body although many occur in specific places. They can vary in size and sometimes become so large and unsightly, it could cause people to become self-conscious so that they keep covered and hidden. 38
They can also get irritated by clothing and possibly get caught. If they are in the hairline they can get pulled when brushing or combing the hair. There was a time when the good old NHS would oblige and organise removal of said blemish. However, this is no longer the case. Many people are suffering needless embarrassment because they think removal

I have been a Therapist and Educator for over 30 years and have worked in many top Spas and Health Resorts with training in lots of popular beauty techniques and brands. When I heard the ‘Buzz’ about this fantastic, award-winning new treatment and read about it in the press (many articles in magazines such as Tatler, Mary Claire Jan 2019) I signed up with Ziggie Bergman herself at Regents University to learn all about this Therapy and bring it to my practice here in Hertfordshire. The Treatment A warm lavender compress precedes a thorough cleanse using the luxurious organic Dr Hauschka skincare range, which I am fully trained in. This then seamlessly leads to a pressure point massage of very insightful Facial Reflexology. A Japanese face lifting massage follows using Ziggies own Amethyst infused Elixir. A unique blend of oils and healing herbs designed to hydrate, firm and tone the skin while the invigorating massage techniques plump and firm. FACIAL REFLEXOLOGY The face provides a beautiful and precise tool to read what is going on in the body. Facial reflexology focuses on reflex (pressure) points on the face, which help stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms and help improve circulation and nerve conduction, encouraging the release of toxins from the body. So the unique benefit of this treatment is that
not only does it help to improve your health and wellbeing (as with foot Reflexology); it can also help you look better; younger and have a healthy glow. The face will look smoother and more toned as circulation is increased and muscle tension is released. Some clients call it a mini ‘face lift’.

Hair and nail health
FEED FROM THE INSIDE
Vitamins and minerals are essential to the health and appearance of hair and nails. Although these nutrients occur naturally in foods, adequate nutrition is not always achieved and there may be risk of dietary deficiencies, which are often reflected in the poor appearance of hair and nails. The body prioritises its nutrient distribution and because the hair and nails are not vital organs, they are the areas first to be affected by nutritional deficiencies whether caused by poor diet or illness. Here is a quick guide to supplements/foods needed for healthy hair and nail growth.
Zinc
Zinc is needed for the growth and renewal of cells both in the hair and the nails and is important in the formation of nail bed. White flecks under the nails are thought to be caused by a zinc deficiency. Foods rich in zinc are lamb, whole grains and most nuts and seeds.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is important also through its role in helping to build proteins. Good sources include kiwi fruit, peppers watercress and oranges and grapefruits.
Essential fatty acids
Essential fatty acids such as fish oils and evening primrose oil are needed to form the structure of cell membranes. The body cannot make them so eating a diet rich in oily fish and seeds is highly recommended. Essential Fatty acid supplements are available in the form of Fish oils, Evening Primrose oil and Flax seed oil.
B vitamins B vitamins are important in helping
the body to build the protein Keratin, the major protein of nails and hair. Insufficiency can lead to poor nail and hair growth and in particular ridges in the nails. They are widely available foods such as eggs, meat, whole grain foods and seeds. If you are recovering from an illness and your hair and nails are suffering, a supplement of B-Complex is recommended.

TALKING DIRTY
What is living in your makeup brush?
The majority of makeup and cosmetic users don’t give much thought to the cleanliness of their makeup brushes in fact, one in five women didn’t even know they had to wash their makeup brushes*.
44
Professionals recommended brushes are washed at least once a week. Makeup brushes are our everyday tools, not only do they give a smoother and even application, they also keep oils and bacteria from your hands and fingers away from your face and pores. Touching your face with your fingers can clog your pores but your unwashed makeup brushes
www.yourhealthhub.uk could also be a contributing factor. Dirty, unwashed makeup brushes can not only cause spots, irritate your skin and worsen wrinkles but can also carry dangerous bacteria and viral infections. Our skin and bodies contain naturally occurring germs that are for the most part completely harmless. Germs can live in brushes and cosmetic products without any threat whatsoever however, when the levels of bacteria become too high or in contact pathogens that is when problems can arise. Bacteria such as staphylococcus, streptococcus and E coli could be lurking in your makeup brushes which will make that little spot of pimple seem somewhat insignificant. Dangerous and harmful bacteria within makeup brushes are a real threat; an Australian mother contracted the serious Staph infection from an unwashed makeup brush leaving her confined to a wheelchair. In a study conducted* of used make-up brushes borrowed from 35 consumers, professionals and beauty counters a staggering 58% were deemed ‘too unhygienic for use’ and
34% of those makeup brushes tested contained more bacteria than the average toilet brush. Not only should washing your makeup brushes be a consideration but so should where you store them. Bathrooms can often be a germ-riddled environment, fungal spores floating around in the air can make their way onto your makeup brushes. All Fungal spores
Germs can live in brushes and cosmetic products without any threat whatsoever however, when the levels of bacteria become too high or in contact pathogens that is when problems can arise. need is a moist place to live, finding their way into your makeup brushes is easy. If your brushes are kept uncovered in the bathroom, bacteria from the toilet can quite literally end up on your face. These germs can then spread and enter your body through your mouth, eyes and broken skin. It’s never been so important to wash your brushes, with many tricks and tools on the market you may not have to allocate hours of washing and drying time. When did you last clean your makeup brushes? FACE YOGA The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method is a natural way of looking and feeling younger and healthier with an added sense of relaxation and wellbeing. It is a combination of face exercises, face massage, face acupressure and face relaxation. It also focuses on wellbeing techniques for the mind, body and soul. Danielle’s philosophy is that we should all have the opportunity to look and feel the very best we can for our age and to have the tools and knowledge to look after the health of our faces, just like we do with our bodies. Danielle Collins, the world-leading Face Yoga expert and author, has created The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method. The programme has 46
come from years of research and development into techniques which have been used for thousands of years in the East combined with current studies in to the face and overall health. Danielle combined her research with 15 years of experience with clients of all ages and her training in holistic therapies. Her programmes are enjoyed by millions of people worldwide.
www.yourhealthhub.uk
There are five aspects to The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method and here is how they work: Face Exercise Just as your body needs regular exercise to stay toned and firm, the 57 muscles in the face and neck also need to be exercised. As they become stronger through exercise they are lifted and firmed and the skin attached to the muscles is also lifted and tautened, therefore reducing lines and wrinkles. As the muscles are much smaller than those in the body, it takes a lot less time for them to increase in strength and tone. A recent study by doctors at Northwestern University showed that daily Face Yoga can make you look up to 3 years younger https:// news.northwestern.edu/stories/2018/january/ facial-exercises-help-middle-aged-womenappear-more-youthful/ Face Massage: By regularly massaging the face using the techniques from The Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method, you will increase the circulation, lymph flow and remove toxins. This will reduce poor skin tone, puffiness and dark circles and allow the skin to look healthier and more youthful. Evolve Organic Beauty
S..L..O..W BEAUTY
In the fast paced world we live in, where we each try to be as efficient with our time as we can and do as many things as possible on our journey from A to B, it is easy to miss the small details of our days and rush through activities without enjoying them. This is very true of our skincare routine, especially at the end of the day when we are tired. Instead of going through the motions we should be mindful and enjoy the time spent on ourselves. If slow beauty is quality over quantity, we should think about how we can add extra relaxation to the host of other benefits from our products and take time to treat our skin, thinking about how we care for it for the longer term, rather than opting for quick fix solutions. By this we don’t mean you should embark on a new 12 - step beauty routine, if anything we mean the opposite - only use the products you need to use. Minimising products respects your skin's natural beauty and function and prevents the skin being over treated or overloaded with products. Our skin has a natural biome of friendly bacteria which can be damaged by over cleansing or the wrong pH products. It is one of our detoxification organs and certain products can block that function. 48
“It [The slow movement] is a cultural revolution against the notion that faster is always better. The Slow philosophy is not about doing everything at a snail’s pace. It’s about seeking to do everything at the right speed. Savouring the hours and minutes rather than just counting them. Doing everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible. It’s about quality over quantity in everything from work to food to parenting.” Reda When you do choose your products, choose consciously: Be mindful of the impact of the products you are choosing. Every product has an impact on our planet throughout its supply chain. Where are the ingredients sourced from (issues include ingredient miles, water usage and bio piracy)? What about the packaging (it could release harmful chemicals either during production or during use which contaminate the product)? Who manufactured it (modern slavery)? What will happen to it during use (micro beads and water pollution)?. What about the
www.yourhealthhub.uk
packaging at the end of its use (is it recyclable or refillable? When it breaks down does it release any chemicals?). There are so many aspects to think about when you consume any product. Mindful beauty is something that we embrace at Evolve Organic Beauty. We create products that not only produce great results on our skin, but we also make ethical and environmentally friendly choices easy for those who want to use natural and organic products in their beauty routines as it is our mission to make these choices mainstream. At Evolve we choose to use recycled packaging wherever possible. When it comes to plastic, we opt for 75% to 100% recycled post consumer PET plastic, which (unlike PVC) is fully recyclable and if it is put into landfill, it degrades without leaching any chemicals into the soil. Our glass is sourced in Europe and is also partly recycled. Additionally, the card in our cartons is FSC (Forest Sustainability Certified). We source ingredients and packaging as locally as
possible, and those that are brought in from afar are bought in powder form to reduce our carbon footprint. All our products are vegan. This is so that we can support everyone in their lifestyle choices as well as helping the environment. The production of plant-based materials is a more efficient use of our resources, as it requires less energy from fossil fuels as well as less land and water. By removing animal products from consumption we can play our part in reducing humanity's damaging impact on our environment. We are not asking you to change everything you do at once, we just ask that you make small improvements that you can fit into your everyday life. Take it slowly the next time you are cleansing and moisturising, enjoy your beauty routine, and choose your products mindfully. CONTACT W | evolvebeauty.co.uk 49

SMILE! Ali Abdellatif, principal dentist at the Regency House Dental Clinic in St Albans, discusses Fresh Breath, Smile Design and Dental Implants.
Research has shown that when people look at us, they subconsciously look at two main things, our eyes and our mouth. Within milliseconds, they form an opinion about us and decide if we are likeable or not. Billions of pounds are spent on enhancing our appearance and a large proportion of that focuses on our faces, particularly our eyes and smile. But there is also a factor that our observer doesn’t know about: how we feel about ourselves. For example, people who have a tooth missing often find that they are self-conscious about this and smile less widely when interacting with others. Some automatically cover their mouths with their hands in an attempt to mask their missing teeth. Patients report that when they fix this problem they find themselves smiling more widely and more often. Even more problematic is halitosis or bad breath. Those closest to us will often avoid hurting our feelings by pointing this out but occasionally a loved one will nudge his/her partner to see a dentist or hygienist because the condition is going worse. Many of these issues can be easily rectified by a visit to the dentist, who will discuss the patient’s concerns in confidence and work with them to improve their overall confidence and ability to interact in society without the fear of being judged for having bad teeth, bad breath or an awkward smile. 54
Fresh Breath The main cause of bad breath is gum disease. We often see patients who brush their teeth religiously morning noon and night but can’t seem to get rid of the smell. When we examine them we often find that they are missing critical areas where the bacteria are accumulating such around wisdom teeth that are only half-way through the gum or in between back teeth and deep under their gum lines. This accumulation of bacteria, called dental plaque or biofilm, attacks the body’s defences and some strains of these bacteria produce gasses that contribute to bad breath. Gum disease can be superficial (gingivitis) or advanced (periodontitis). It is the dentist’s and dental hygienist’s role to identify and diagnose these diseases and help in their treatment. I stress the word ‘help’ here because in fact 90% of the work to treat gum disease is done by the patient at home. Our job is to find and treat areas that have large accumulations and to make it easier for the patient to clean them at home. We then spend time ‘training’ our patients on how to clean these problem areas with differently shaped brushes and other cleaning tools like dental floss. Everybody is different so each patient needs a tailor-made cleaning program. Another intra-oral cause of bad breath can be the tongue. Some people get ‘furry’ tongues due to bad diet, genetics, medications, or unhealthy lifestyles. This can accumulate ‘smelly’ bacteria
www.yourhealthhub.uk
and food debris contributing to halitosis. Other causes of bad breath include: Diet: Some foods interact badly with our digestive systems. Each person is different, so some people can eat large quantities of the usual culprits like onions and garlic and not show it whilst others have merely a sprinkling of garlic in their food and suffer for days. Even simple foods like eggs, bread or some fruits and pulses can cause digestive upset, bloating, flatulence and gases from the digestive tract that taints our breath. People who come to the dentist complaining of this are often asked to keep a food diary to identify what it is that is creating this problem. By trial and error often the causative factor is found and stopped. Systemic or medical conditions can change the natural body balance and create a state of alkalinity or acidity or ketosis (such as in untreated diabetes). Some medications create a state of imbalance in our oral flora (our natural mouth bacteria) or cause abnormal growth of the gums which leads to more plaque accumulation. This can then trigger the bad breath problem. Again, we can help to identify these problems and work with doctors to improve your general well-being. Our microbiome: Our microbiome is the lump sum of all the billions of bacteria that inhabit our bodies. Every individual’s microbiome is different and some research is now pointing to the fact that it is our bacterial makeup that affects our
general biology and character. This sounds crazy but many advanced centres our now analysing patients’ bacterial makeup and modifying it. Results include weight loss, reduction of heart disease and reduction of body inflammation that affects the body systems generally as well as the muscles and joints. We are still a few years from having an accurate method of diagnosing these problems, but more and more dentists are awakening to these new scientific findings and learning about different ways it affects the mouth and consequently the well-being of their patients. Smile Design No one has perfect teeth and a ‘perfect’ smile. Often well-known celebrities go to dentists and leave with blazingly obvious ‘fake’ teeth and smiles. But that’s what they pay for and if that’s what makes them and their fans happy, so be it. In the UK, we tend to lag behind America and Europe in that quest for the perfect smile. This is good in that it stops us from undergoing aggressive cosmetic dentistry, but there is always a way to ‘enhance’ our smiles without shaving our teeth or damaging them in any way. The first thing that a person should do when they want to improve their smile is to see an experienced dentist. Don’t fall for the ‘cosmetic dentist’ tag line that a lot of our colleagues use. Cosmetic means ‘appearance only’ and it is often detrimental to have the ‘appearance’ of your teeth 55
hair & beauty improved without having a proper assessment of the ‘health’ of your teeth and gums first. For example, some young patients go to dentists demanding veneers to give them the perfect smile. Little do they know that their teeth are vital organs with a blood and nerve supply. In younger teeth, these living parts of the teeth are larger than in older patients. Aggressive shaving of the teeth to create space to attach veneers can be devastating to these vital parts and can lead to the death of the teeth. Often for younger patients, there are excellent alternatives to veneers such as invisible orthodontics to straighten them coupled with gentle whitening of the teeth producing super results. Teeth can be reshaped with our excellent bonding materials and patches of deep discolouration removed by abrasion or bonding. These treatments can buy time until the patient is older and her/his teeth can withstand more aggressive approaches, should they still feel the need for this. Another example is the use of gum surgery to regenerate thin receded gums damaged by aggressive toothbrushing. Tissue can be replaced and reshaped to provide the right gum contour that ‘drapes’ the teeth correctly creating a better smile line. Often inexperienced dentists will overlook this and focus on ‘filling’ the gap created by a receding gum line, making the teeth look unnaturally longer than normal. It is really important, if you want to enhance your smile, that you see an ethical dentist who has experience in cosmetic dentistry to ensure that any treatment you have is first and foremost going to improve the health of your teeth and gums whilst enhancing them cosmetically. Again, everyone is different so tailor-made packages are created for patients based upon their age, their tooth anatomy, their lifestyles etc. Dental implants Nowadays most people know about dental implants and the positive benefits they can have in replacing missing teeth and enhancing people’s ability to eat, speak and smile with confidence. 56
Dental implants are fundamentally just the titanium or zirconium screw that is placed in the bone to replacing missing roots of teeth. The part that goes on top of the implant is called the implant-crown (the actual tooth that we see). It is how the implant is placed and what ‘extras’ go around the implants that make all the difference in terms of long-term health and durability and successful cosmetic results. An example of this is how in the past, we were taught that as long as the implant was placed in the patient’s bone it didn’t matter exactly where it was or the thickness of the overlying bone and soft tissue. Research has proven this to be wrong because we now know that if the bone is very thin, it can dissolve (resorb) with time which can lead to the greyness of the titanium to show through the gum and, even worse, the potential infection of the implant. Even more so, more recent research points to the additional importance of the thickness of the gums around the implant neck (where it joins the implant crown). Experienced implants dentists look at the big picture and will often advise the augmentation (increasing) of bone and soft tissue as part of the implant treatment. This ensures a more aesthetic and longer-lasting implant. It is critical that if you are considering dental implants, to see a dentist who has postgraduate training in this discipline and who keeps up to date on the latest research and techniques. Dental implants have, without a doubt, created a quantum leap in our ability to enhance our patients’ lives in general and I am particularly pleased about this as it is my main area of expertise.
