...to Your Health Hub – YOUR local health and wellbeing magazine and directory

Welcome to the “Demystifying Holistics” edition of your Your Health Hub. By definition (Cambridge English Dictionary) Holistic means: dealing with or treating the whole of something or someone and not just a part. These are extraordinary times, and I feel this issue is an important one. I speak to a lot of people, and I hear a growing tendency from them to explore new ways to take responsibility for maintaining or regaining their health, especially mental health. According to ONS.Gov.Uk almost one in five adults (19.2%) were likely to be experiencing some form of depression during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in June 2020. This had almost doubled from around 1 in 10 (9.7%) before the pandemic (July 2019 to March 2020). Some feel they cannot go to their GP with what they consider a minor ailment as they do not want to burden the system. Some have long waiting times for a specialist appointment, so have become proactive in trying to help themselves in the meantime.

One thing is certain though, the interest in complimentary therapies and practices is growing at a pace. There are many practices out there, so I have chosen a cross section to showcase in this issue. However, you can find more on our website www.yourhealthhub.uk along with a directory of practitioners. I have also launched a series of mini podcasts to accompany each issue. “Your Health Hub” podcasts can be heard from the link on our website: www.yourhealthhub.uk, or directly on Spotify, Radio Republic, Google, PocketCasts and Breaker! Look out for our Podcast Logo. Don’t forget to enter for our free give-aways either by emailing zandra@yourhealthhub.uk or joining our community from our website. Namaste,

What is Systematic Kinesiology? Systematic Kinesiology, also known as Applied Kinesiology, was originally developed by Dr George Goodheart D.C. in the 1960s. Dr Goodheart was a Chiropractor in the United States of America who after learning about Meridians in Chinese Medicine, quickly discovered there was a connection between muscle groups, organs and glands in the body.

www.yourhealthhub.uk Using muscle testing, a Kinesiologist is able to detect weaknesses, imbalances and stressors in the body. It allows the practitioner to treat the root of the problem and not just the symptom a client is experiencing. Whilst Kinesiology is exceptional in supporting reversal of symptoms such as pain, inflammation, skin conditions, digestive issues and fatigue it is also great when you do not experience any of these symptoms, picking up sub clinical imbalances before they show any indications or signs of potential disease. Systematic Kinesiology looks at the body on 4 levels, each level can affect the other and sometimes the root of a problem may be from more than one of these levels:

Physical

Using a selection of physical adjustments and targeted lymphatic reflex techniques blockages on this layer can easily be cleared. These techniques can range from adjustments to the spine and neck to lymphatic drainage blockages.

Chemical

Muscle testing can detect nutritional deficiencies in the body which could easily be corrected. If found, targeted nutritional supplements or diet changes may be recommended. Food intolerances can also severely impact the body, clients are welcome to bring any foods they are suspicious of to see how their body reacts, again using muscle testing.

Emotional

We all experience trauma and upset at some point in our life, sometimes we allow ourselves to deal with this, other times we just bury it deep down and carry on. Any emotions that do not get released can be suppressed in the cells of the body causing them to change in their behaviour, which can eventually show as physical symptoms. A lot of research is now being done into the connection between the mind and body and illness known as Psychoneuroimmunology. Using a number of deep emotional release techniques, a Kinesiologist can release these suppressed emotions.

Electrical

Using Chinese medicine, Kinesiology also uses techniques to remove blockages within the Meridian system, a system which is also used by Acupuncturists. Meridians have been known about for thousands of years. They are channels of electrical energy that run around the body

connected to individual organs. To the human eye these meridians have never been seen, however a French researcher, Pierre de Vernejoul, injected radioactive isotopes into the acupoints of humans and tracked their movement with a special gamma imaging camera. Amazingly the flow of the isotopes seen on camera, traced the same outline of Meridian flow! www.yourhealthhub.uk

If you’ve been experiencing chronic pain, there’s no doubt it’s real but it’s very much affected by your mental state the question is how far can the mind-body connection go? And what are the implications for your health?

Chronic pain:

what if it was all in your head?

Around 4 in 5 adults experience low back pain (LBP) at some point in their lifetimes1. It is the most common cause of missed-work days in the UK becoming more common with increasing age. However, only 10% of lower back pain is attributable to a recognisable pathology (eg. infection, tumour, lumbar spine fracture, structural deformity, inflammatory disorder, radicular syndrome, or cauda equina syndrome), so what happens to the 80% of us diagnosed with mechanic or also called non-specific lowerback pain?

When pain is not just physical

As we know, recurrent and persistent LBP can be extremely limiting and often creates a sense of loss of purpose and motivation, inducing a lack of confidence in our ability to go about our daily activities. Often just the fear of pain is 8

enough to stop us in our tracks and we suddenly find ourselves in a spiral of ‘negative thinking and feeling pain, feeling pain and negative thinking’. Consequently, depression has become the most common co-morbidity of lower-back pain in the adult population, meaning it is consistently associated with the condition. So, after many doctor’s appointments, flare-ups and emotional rollercoasters, frustration sets in and the ‘go-to’ solution for most of us are pain-killers or antidepressants. What really happens is that desperation gives rise to anxious and negative mental chatter - we let the condition define us and tell us what we can or can’t do, hope for and even achieve! Environment, emotions and lifestyle can play a role in health just as much as medicine - they all influence and trigger our behaviours and unconscious actions. For example, reading an

unwanted text just before going to bed can lead to a sleepless night and undesirable emotions and actions the next day. Science has shown that if we have negative thoughts, these thoughts can produce emotions of stress, anxiety and sadness and the body releases chemicals such as the stress hormone ‘cortisol’. Short-term stress is natural and occurs in every human being to trigger the fight-or-flight response, referring to all the chemical changes that go on in your body to get it ready for physical action. However, if you are experiencing stress over the long-term, it can take a real physical and mental toll on your health. Research2 has shown a connection between stress and chronic problems like high blood pressure, obesity, depression, lower-back pain and more.

Can your mind be trained to control chronic pain?

Try to suspend judgment for a minute and consider this idea:‘If there’s nothing structurally wrong with me, and my thoughts and feelings have an impact on my health, could I consciously reverse this mechanism to heal myself?’ Treating yourself with your mind is a widely clinically used method called the ‘placebo effect’ - a pill or liquid that looks like the new treatment but does not have any treatment value from active ingredients. The vast majority of medical trials include a placebo group and up to 75%3 of participants in these group can show signs of improvement, particularly in antidepressant trials. My partner is a case in point: he suffered for 5 years from LBP and related depression but one year ago resolved to start meditation in addition to beginning a strength programme I put together for him. Today, he is back running, playing football and has even started a gymnastics class! The mind is our most powerful tool, but also our most destructive.

Empower yourself

You may know the term ‘holistic medicine’ which goes back 5,000 years before medical treatments came into the picture. Holistic

treatment looks at the importance of healing the entire person instead of specific illness, certain body parts, or symptoms. It ranges from following a specific lower-back pain exercise rehabilitation programme to using other approaches such meditation, counselling and other mind-body techniques (Reiki, acupuncture, homeopathy, relaxation, yoga) to help reduce your need for pain medication and aims to offer a long-term solution or management to your condition. As a level 4 Exercise Professional specialised in Lower Back Pain, I have noticed that the clients with chronic pain referred to me by the NHS (Exercise Referral Scheme) have accelerated their recovery by introducing a gradual and specific physical activity programme into their routine along with working on other key factors such as: mental wellbeing, posture correction and lifestyle changes. So instead of feeling stuck and letting days, months, years go by, why not focus all your energy and attention on something new? Take the time to look inside as you have the potential to improve the quality of your every day and of your life in general. Hemp plant CBD

CANNABIS has two species

...uncovered

Imagine being able to self- regulate your wellness from your the inside out? Connecting a key to unlock your own bodies ability to create homeostasis! Every living being on this planet with a vertebrae has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) and is most likely endocannabinoid deficient (ECD) because of the lack of HEMP in our food source since 1950’s when the government banned growing hemp . Hemp is a relation of the Cannabis plant - thus was born the stigma and association to the legality of the Cannabis plant as a whole. But until recently the two strains of the plant were not fully explained alongside with the associated natural healing properties. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been recently covered in the media, and you may have even seen it as an add-in booster to your post-workout smoothie or morning coffee. What exactly is CBD? Why is it suddenly so popular? The basic explanation of cannabis is that there are 2 species – Hemp & Marijuana. Hemp is high in CBD and low in THC so there is no high feeling possible.

10

Marijuana is high (no pun intended) in THC and low in CBD – so you will get a high feeling. These are the two cannabinoids found in both strains of the cannabis plant and both have medicinal benefits. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system of the body. It impacts the regulatory mechanism, which is made up of naturally occurring cannabis-like molecules — endocannabinoids. They act like neurotransmitters: transfer signals all over the body to help maintain homeostasis. Although both CBD and THC interact with the endocannabinoid system via CB1 and CB2 receptors, their impact differs a lot. While THC attaches itself to CB1 receptors, which are mainly present in the brain and are involved with cognition, memory, motor skills and pain, it inhibits the release of neurotransmitters and increases the release of other compounds, altering normal functioning. As for CBD, scientists thought that it did the same thing, but with CB2 receptors. Scientists believe CBD encourages the body to produce more endocannabinoids. This process results in reduced anxiety, pain, and inflammation. The popularity of CBD is recent times as a natural plant oil has been further highlighted alongside the nutritional benefits too. Hemp itself is an edible protein including all essential amino acids, as well as Omega 3,6 and 9 essential fatty acids. Best of all. It is renewable and does not need to be genetically modified as it is naturally pest resistant.

SPECIES 1

HEMP

contains 20% + CBD contains less than 0.02% THC CBD is rich in antioxidants – which are important for our bodies to keep free radical damage, keep out immune systems strong and it can also slow the stages of pre-mature aging of our skin CBD also has an anti-inflammatory effect 20 x that of aspirin and 2 x that of hydrocodone and it does not damage your liver. When we feed our cannabinoid receptors – our endocannabinoid system begins to work properly, and the body begins to self- regulate and self- correct naturally. So CBD is the key we all need to unlock our best health potential – whatever health status we are in.

Intravenous vitamin therapy for nonmedicinal reasons such as rehydration, immuneboosting, re-energising and de-stressing were introduced into the UK in 2014/2015. It is also believed to help with symptoms of jet-lag and sleep problems.

vitamin therapy

It has become a very popular trend, especially among celebrities. It is a method of administering vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream. Vitamins and minerals are naturally found in food and are generally consumed alongside other nutrients in a food matrix. Vitamins that are taken by mouth get broken down in the stomach and digestive tract and is limited to how much can be absorbed (50%). If however, the vitamin is given directly into the vein, it is absorbed in a much higher percentage (90%). There are a number of factors that affect the body’s ability to absorb nutrients in the stomach. These include age, metabolism, health status, genetics, interactions with other products we consume, and the physical and chemical makeup of the nutritional supplement or food. Higher levels of the vitamins in your bloodstream lead to a greater uptake into the cells, which theoretically will use the nutrients to 12

maintain health and fight illness. Injecting anything into the bloodstream also comes with risks such as ‘air bubbles’ in the syringe that can transfer to the bloodstream, allergic reactions and infection. These are more likely to occur if the person administering the injection is not properly qualified. It is important to point out that no published evidence supports the use of this therapy and very few studies are available that have tested the effectiveness. There is however lots of anecdotal evidence from patients that have had treatments at Tocolo. explained

By James Brown, Muhdo Nutrigenomics Director In 2003, scientists after 13 years finally finished sequencing the human genome, which they initially believed would show that our “genes controlled our destiny” with a Darwinian belief that they fundamentally controlled all of our biology. Initially this was a compelling argument leading many to believe that their genes will be in complete control of their life no matter what – never mind and move on, as “it’s in my genes you know”. The science community largely thought that each of us would have around 100,000 plus genes each controlling the 1000s of proteins, which are vitally important to our bodies and health. This then allowed for a great excuse to blame your parents and consider yourself a 14

victim of heredity. Yes, we all come with a set of unique genetic predispositions, such as how we process our food, respond to exercise, stress or sleep. But our lifestyle and environments will affect those same genetic traits and either dilute or accentuate them. Thankfully, the world of genomics has delved further still with the emergence of a new and exciting area of science called epigenetics. The Greek prefix “epi” in epigenetics meaning “on top of” or “in addition to” controls how your genes behave and function. It is the intersection between genetics, nutrition, environment and how diet, micronutrients, exercise, stress and sleep can all change the methylation and expression of our genes. DNA methylation (DNAm) is a process where tiny chemical markers called methyl groups will attach to one of the four nucleotide bases on your DNA (adenine [A], cytosine [C], guanine [G], or thymine [T]) and

Epigenetics

largely control the way they function. As we naturally age these methyl groups will either hypo (low) or hyper (high) methylate regions across your genome, which will then affect how specific genes and biological processes function, such as your eye sight, hearing and memory. While external characteristics can sometimes give us an insight into our internal health, in many instances we can simply misinterpret external factors such as bigger muscles, faster running times or eating a certain type of diet as they do not actually actuate to being healthier. A fantastic illustration of the “epigenetic landscape” by Conrad Waddington in 1957 helps to simplify how during pregnancy your embryonic stem cells (the marble) goes through a process of cellular differentiation and development. Highlighting a variety of pathways that each cell/ marble can take down the hill, and as to whether that cell then goes on to become an eye, cheek, bone, muscle cell, etc. Once we are born and the cell/ marble has reached the bottom of the biological hill with regards to development, the function of that cell will be hypermethylated and locked. This information will then be passed on when the

cell divides and each time it then replicates, allowing each cell to then stay on its chosen path i.e. an eye cell will always then create more eye cells, and not develop into a nose cell. Simply having “good genes” will offer no guarantees to our health and wellbeing, nor does it on living to 100. Epigenetic methylation and modifications after birth do not change what a gene originally codes for, 15

but how they express themselves or if they are expressed at all. How you live your day to day life, both in terms of your lifestyle and environment, will then go on to affect those modification markers sitting above your genes, which will then cause a multitude of outcomes with regards to your health and wellbeing. And it doesn’t stop there as the latest research has also shown that your lifestyle and environment will not only affect your health but may then go on to affect your children and grandchildren in a process called “Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance”. This is where your lifestyle such as your diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and the pollution

you have been exposed to and subsequent epigenetic information that it creates can then be passed on down to future generations. Leaving either a positive or negative effect on your child’s genetic traits. UK based company Muhdo is pioneering the science of genetics and epigenetics. Allowing each of their users the ability to understand their genetic blueprint, but to then be able to see how their day to day lives such as their diet, exercise, sleep and environment are affecting them at an epigenetic and cellular level. The $64,000 question and the key to epigenetics is that if we only look at one of these areas, we miss the influence and power of the other.

Iridology the study of the iris of the eye This is a safe, non-invasive assessment where a trained Iridologist will study the iris of the eyes in order to assess health concerns and enable them to make appropriate recommendations. It is a very beneficial practice for complementary therapists, as it enables us to monitor a clients health and work alongside you to assist in improving health and well-being. This service is available online. Iridology is an assessment of your current health, it does not diagnose or pre-determine. It can assist in determining possible concerns that may correlate to a particular ailment. As an Iridologist I make recommendations according to what I see manifested in the iris at the time that the photograph was taken. I then work alongside my clients to assist in improving their health and vitality. How does a consultation unfold? A full consultation with the client will take place where health and lifestyle history and current health concerns are discussed. Photographs will then be taken and sent to me of the iris of both eyes. The exact procedure of how to do this, will be explained in detail when a consultation is booked. In a follow up consultation, the

assessment and recommendations will be discussed. As a trained Holistic Therapist and Iridologist I will make suggestions as to a way forward and may offer you more consultations in order to work with you to achieve optimum health. Origins of Iridology date back over 3000 years ago when the studies of the iris of the eyes were first made in Egypt, China and India. However, Dr Ignatz Von Petzcy, a Hungarian Doctor made this popular in 1880 when he published his research and his iris chart. Catherine is a qualified Holistic Therapist and Iridologist. Wholistic

herbalism

I like Wholism. Whole. Entirety. You and all of what it is which makes you. That is how herbalism has always been. Herbs are whole. We use complete structures such as leaves, petals, bark, roots and berries. Pharmaceutical medications tend to be a single constituent (usually originally found in a plant) which is then copied chemically, produced in a lab and used in isolation. They generally have a single intended action with side effects (which sometimes also get used to beneficial effect). Plants contain 100s of different constituents which act synergistically. As a result, it is rare to have adverse effects from a whole plant medicine. Plants often contain opposing actions or ameliorate the negative effects from a particular constituent. Eg Meadowsweet (from which the chemical used as aspirin derives) has a protective effect and is used to help digestive complaints unlike aspirin which causes stomach ulcers. For me, wholism in my consultations means that I want to know what you do in your spare time, how your relationship is (if you have one), whether you enjoy your work life, if you’re anxious/ stressed/wired/depressed and what foods you use to fuel your body. This is all part of the colour palette of the picture of you. Without these things, I can only treat your symptoms. I cannot get to the root cause. Symptomatic treatment can be very effective because it makes you feel better and because of that, it is very important. However, if done in isolation, it rarely addresses the root cause. If you don’t address the root, you won’t stop it recurring and you have to continue taking symptomatic treatment. A classic example of this is to continue taking antacid tablets after your meals. You are continuing to do the things which cause you 20

symptoms and not addressing the reason you have acid issues in the first place. Choosing the right herb for you requires some artistry because each herb has multiple actions. I can choose from a dozen herbs which work on your gut but, knowing that a particular herb also addresses your emotional tension and your tendency to sleep badly makes herb A a much better choice than herb B which may address the specific gut issue but not your tension or sleep. I love the rich depth of colour, texture and palette that I have to choose from. So, when someone who doesn’t know this about herbalism then asks me ‘What’s good for xyz condition?’ I cannot answer them simply. Without a good working knowledge of the person’s whole, I am picking a herb at random for symptomatic treatment. And, random medicine, as with most things, is far less likely to be effective. Lucy Blunden is a medical herbalist (western) practising and living in Hemel Hempstead and working online. Helen Myers, owner and trainer at Holistic Therapy Training, shares her top 3 picks for holistic treatments

treatments

Friday evening and, after a busy week, it’s lovely to just relax and recharge the batteries. I’ve had the privilege of being in an industry where, even after 20 years, I still feel passionately about my work, but as a sports and remedial massage therapist, it can be quite tiring. So, wanting to have a long career, I decided some while ago to add other therapies to my treatment menu. Whilst this was initially to be working less hard, I also became equally passionate about these and realised it was just as important to help people relax as it was to stretch and massage fascia. I was trying to decide which more relaxing treatments both my clients and I liked best and my top three would be.

Indian headmassage

This because it’s a half hour of heaven for both the recipient and the therapist. It can be performed anywhere, and, apart from no clothes having to be removed, no real equipment needed other than a chair. I’ve offered this in shops, for the terminally bored, when their partners are shopping, I’ve offered this at school fairs, I’ve offered this in offices... and that’s the beauty, it’s non-invasive and can be performed anywhere.

Natural facelift massage

Unbelievable results, using nothing other than different massage moves, and no products. Ideal for those who don’t want to go under the knife, or going to a wedding and don’t want to take the chance of a spot breakout or bad reaction to a product. We had one lady with Bells Palsy and just worked the one side of her face that was affected, she was over the moon when for the first time in a year, her face looked balanced.

Reflexology

This is probably my personal favourite. An hour of relaxing, rebalancing and restorative bliss. I love the connection that you make with the client, and often find myself drifting away whilst giving the treatment. There are very few that don’t fall asleep during the treatment and feel amazing after.

My passion for my work lead me to passing on my knowledge and I now teach all three of these treatments above. If you would like to add these or other therapies to your treatment menu, please visit holistictherapytraining-herts.co.uk 21

Using hypnosis Today’s world is becoming especially challenging for many people. In addition to what’s going on in the outside world, balancing work, relationships, friendships and finances can also be a continuous trial. · Have healthy habits become a challenge for you in these difficult times? · Are you one of the millions in the UK who feels stressed? · Are you overeating, smoking, drinking more as a result, or feeding the stress in some other way?

to achieve your goals

· Or are you even one of the millions suffering from anxiety? (way back in 2013 there were 8.2 million cases of anxiety in the UK alone – who knows how much higher that is now). If you have answered yes to any of the above then one bit of good news is that you are not on your own.

A more helpful piece of good news though, is that hypnosis can really help you. Yes, hypnosis works! Whilst hypnosis is becoming a lot more widely accepted in the mainstream media, with wonderful success stories increasingly available to read about, there are still a few misconceptions about the truth about hypnosis. And those misunderstandings are often around the most important points of what it actually is and what it does.

Here are some realities about hypnosis. · It is not what you see on entertainment shows on the TV. · It is not sleep. · Nor is it a loss of control and giving up your will. · It cannot make you do anything that you do not want to do.

What Hypnosis actually is, is more interesting. It is a natural state that you find yourself in daily. Daydreaming is an example of this – or that half-awake, half-asleep state just before you fall asleep at night. So is driving somewhere you go regularly without really thinking about how you actually got there. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention where you are less aware of your peripheral surroundings –quite like reading a book, or focusing on your phone, to the exclusion of anything else. These are all examples of hypnosis and there are many other everyday day examples of what hypnosis actually is. In these simple examples, your conscious mind, i.e. your analytical thinking brain, has moved aside and allowed your subconscious mind to take control allowing you to become receptive

and open to new ideas. That’s what hypnosis is all about – facilitating change in the place where it is truly effective – the subconscious mind. Hypnosis today is supported by many evidence based studies including: Smoking Cessation – McCleary, N. (2014) “Hypnotherapy is more effective than nicotine replacement therapy” Weight Loss – Kirsch, I.(1996) “ Hypnosis helped people lose weight in both the short term and long term.“ Anxiety – Hammond, D.C. (2010) “Self-hypnosis training represents a rapid, cost-effective, non-addictive and safe alternative to medication for the treatment of anxiety-related conditions.” If you are ready to bring positive change to your life now, then hypnosis can really help you achieve the goals that might have previously eluded you. Perhaps to... Lose weight? Reduce anxiety? Stop smoking? Or something else? You can do it the natural and easy way with the help of hypnosis and make the positive change permanent in your subconscious mind.

behind every behaviour there is

a feeling

How can you help your child manage and express their emotions? By Rachel Brown, Holistic Therapist

Is your child struggling with anxiety? Are they unwilling to try anything? Is their behaviour out of character and causing stress to the whole family? I get it. For a number of years my son used to hide behind the curtain; he used to storm out of the room if he knew he had done something wrong and he never appeared to hear a word I said. I knew something wasn’t right but I felt totally helpless because I didn’t seem able to get through to him. I also became increasingly frustrated with the school systems for dealing with a child who didn’t quite seem to fit into a specific box. Then we discovered he had dyslexia and this led me on a path to understanding not just how dyslexics react to things but children in general. You see children struggle to express emotions and if they are not taught to recognise, understand and work through their emotions they can end up supressing the negative ones and this can cause a several things to happen. 26

For example - their body will produce higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol and the higher the levels of cortisol the more it will suppress the sleep hormone melatonin, therefore resulting in sleep problems. Also when children suppress emotions and bottle them up they actually make those emotions stronger and this can either be expressed in the form of ill health or in the form of a behaviour, which is amplified. What can you do to help? Children have so much to give and yet we are seeing more and more children suffering with mental health issues. Emotions are basically energy and if we can help children release their negative energy and build up their positive energy then I believe they will: • Develop greater resilience • Develop better coping skills • Perform better at school • Have a more positive sense of self As an Holistic Therapist and qualified Pharmacist with experience teaching and working in special needs schools and as a parent of a dyslexic child, I understand how frustrating it can be both as a parent and

from the child’s point of view when they are struggling and can’t explain what is wrong. My experiences both with science and holistic therapies have made me realise that everything comes back to our feelings and the associated energy of those feelings. In holistic therapy terms this energy affects the energy centres of our body which are known as chakras and if the feelings are negative and therefore the energy is negative it can cause blockages in the chakra system which leads to more disruption. We have seven main chakras in our body, each represented by a different colour of the rainbow and each affected by different feelings. By using the unique properties of each chakra we can correct the imbalances and in so doing help children believe in themselves, their unique superpowers and their special place in the world.

If you are concerned about your child and would like to find out how I can support you through my unique Chakra Kids programme that will help your child build their confidence, positivity and self belief and manage their emotions using fun and engaging methods that include art, music and science as well as holistic therapy techniques please book a FREE 30 minute discovery call here ttps:// thehandofnature.youcanbook.me OR for lots of tips, training and inspiration to help you then I’d love to see you in my FREE, private facebook group -Chakra Kids which you can join here. www.facebook.com/groups/ chakrakids W | thehandofnature.co.uk E | info@thehandofnature.co.uk M | 07952 241215 FB | facebook.com/groups/chakrakids 27

I am super excited to showcase the upcoming editions of Your Health Hub – including a special BONUS EDITION

pet health & wellbeing

Zandra x

Earlier this year I lost my beloved Pepsi, a Collie cross rescue who stayed with me for 15 years. Despite his grand age he really did live life to the full. I was lucky that his great age only started to show a few months before he departed. So in those few months I explored various complimentary, food, supplements & health & wellbeing practices to help him stay well longer. Dedicated to his memory, I decided to do a bonus edition related to Pet Health & Wellbeing. After all our pets are very much part of our family, and their health & wellbeing matters very much too. Our grief at losing them is important to cover too. Get in touch if you would like to see something covered, or to be included – zandra@yourhealhhub.uk

women’s health & wellbeing There are many areas to explore in this edition. Periods, Babies, Breasts, Menopause, Libido and more... We will explore as much as we can! Get in touch if you would like to see something covered, or to be included – zandra@yourhealhhub.uk

Waterfor health Why do we often dismiss the ONE thing that can make a massive difference to our health? If someone were to ask “what is the one thing I could do to maintain or improve my health” what would my answer be? It could be improve their diet, reduce their intake of sugar and processed foods. It could be take more exercise if they are leading a sedentary life. Or it could be take time to meditate or supplement carefully to give their bodies adequate amounts of key nutrients that could be missing from their diet. There are many other possibilities and all of these would be worthwhile choices. However, my answer would be “drink adequate amounts of clean, health giving water”. Clean health giving water means very different things to different people. It opens up the argument as to which is better mains water, bottled water or filtered water. The majority of these are not truly health promoting. Some go part way to addressing the problem. Water should be as clean as possible of contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues and micro plastics. It should have an alkaline pH, antioxidant properties and be suitably structured to be better absorbed and utilised in the body.

Research proving what many people knew intuitively

Over recent years there has been an increasing body of scientific research published on the

antioxidant effects of healthy water through the release of molecular hydrogen H2 which helps to neutrailse harmful free radicals. Further research has been published on the structure of water around the cells and its important contribution to cellular health. We are now beginning to understand the huge benefits of good water to protect our wellbeing which is vital when we are being faced with an ever increasing onslaught of pollution from chemicals and electro magnetic frequencies.

Bioceramics - using the power of nature to improve our water and our wellbeing

Recent advances in water filtration has developed different combinations of natural minerals that are being used in filter systems to be able to transform tap water into water with beneficial properties that can be health promoting. These bio ceramics have a huge lot to offer in safe improvements to water quality – water that can enhance wellbeing. One of the leaders in this field is Biocera who have experience in this field for over 30 years and have developed different types of bioceramic crystal minerals that are used in advanced filters such as their Alkaline Jug Filter. Their UK distributor Water for Health also incorporate them in their Energy Plus Water Filter and their Whole House Systems to give healthy water on tap. Choosing to have healthy water with good energy for all the family is an excellent step to help to protect and improve health. W | water-for-health.co.uk 29

Acupuncture by Carmel Twomey Within each of us, there are ‘energy pathways’ or ‘meridians’ where ‘chi’ (energy) flows. These meridians, named after the organ they originate in (eg. kidney channel, liver channel etc), run all over the body. Where they reach the surface, the Acupuncture needle(s) are inserted to affect a change, not only in the meridian but also the associated organ. As the therapist, I am purely a ‘messenger’, facilitating the bodies natural ability to heal. There is a misconception that the treatment is painful, a competent practitioner will insert and carry out the treatment painlessly for the most part. Treatments are surprisingly relaxing.
