This edition’s editorial focus is on Environmental Health. We are all aware that the Environment needs our help, and every little change we work towards, makes a difference. Here are some suggestions: • Bamboo or bio-degradable toothbrushes • Metal / bamboo reusable straws and cutlery, in Italy they use pasta!
• Eco sponges that can be composted
• Natural bars of soap instead of liquid soap in containers
• Reusable and washable nappies, breast pads, cloths rather than wipes or Disposable eco nappies – some are bio-degradable, free from chlorine, vegan (although not as good for the environment as reusable ones).
• Use Natural Food Wraps
As well as looking at Environmental Health in this issue, there will be the usual look at health & wellbeing, with your directory of local health & wellbeing facilities and practitioners.
• Shop locally and in charity shops
Zandra Editor, Your Health Hub Directory
• Recyclable or refillable soap dispensers
• Algae Omega 3 instead of fish oil tablets • Paper or bamboo cotton buds – some can be composted

doing your bit We all know that there is much we need to do to help our environment. This is a new journey for me, but I realise anything we can do, even if it is one small change, is a positive change. Being honest I am still not there, but I am acutely aware of the need to do more, and as a family, we are trying hard to make simple changes that we hope are effective.
RECYCLING
The first thing I looked at was household recycling – how were we doing with it? I knew that I had always done a quick bin check to hook out any cardboard and tins that the family may have inadvertently binned, but what else was I missing, or doing wrong? I am still learning, but the first three things I learned were: Fruit punnets: I used to put fruit and mushroom punnets in the recycling, but as they are usually made of a combination of plastics, and are often non-recyclable. Cleaning your jars: I knew to rinse milk cartons, tins, jars and bottles but I didn’t realise not doing so could end up sending all the collected recycling to landfill. 6
Wrapping paper: I always put wrapping paper into the recycling bin, but much of it is plasticised, has glitter or metallic and cannot be recycled. (Same for greeting cards). Unlaminated paperbased wrapping paper and pre-recycled wrapping paper are usually recyclable. A good way to test is try to scrunch up the paper into a ball. If it scrunches, and stays scrunched, it can probably be recycled. Cardboard and paper: Plastic tape cannot be recycled so remove from cardboard boxes first. Similarly, the windows in paper envelopes need to removed and placed in general waste before recycling the paper. If it’s smaller than a post-it note it can’t be recycled - plastic caps needn’t be removed from the bottle before recycling. Whilst soap dispensers belong in the recycling, the tops don’t.
www.yourhealthhub.uk Our recycling bin is much better utilised now and fills rapidly. Council websites will usually have details of what is recyclable, and Dacorum has a little video outlining what happens to our waste. http://www.dacorum.gov.uk/home/environmentstreet-care/recycling-refuse-waste/what-happensto-my-recyclables

I had read about Green energy and was becoming more aware of renewable energy – but I had not realised until I researched it, that you could choose a provider of green energy for your household energy. The Definition of Green Energy Green energy comes from natural sources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, plants, algae and geothermal heat. These energy resources are renewable, meaning they’re naturally replenished. In contrast, fossil fuels are a finite resource that takes millions of years to develop and will continue to diminish with use.
(source: https://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/energy/ stories/what-is-green-energy)
As a family, we chose BULB (although there are others). Bulb is the UK’s fastest-growing energy supplier, providing over 1.4 million homes with affordable, green energy. Bulb was founded in 2015 by Hayden Wood and Amit Gudka because they were fed up with the way the energy industry treats customers, and with how much businesses were charging for renewable energy. They saw an opportunity to make energy simpler, cheaper, and greener for everyone - and made it their mission to do so. Simpler: Bulb make energy simpler – They have one, simple tariff for all. And you can speak to a human when you have a question.
simple swaps One swap I found very easy was to use natural bars of soap instead of liquid soap in containers. There is an amazing array of organic, vegan and eco-friendly bars of soaps. You can buy bars of shampoo, conditioner and even washing up liquid. Make-Up Remover – one of my biggest sins was using makeup removing wipes, but I now use a facial cleanser and a flannel. Gifting: This year I have endeavoured to by upcycled items, gifts from charity shops or eco-friendly gifts. Refill Stations: Our local health food shops offer basic’s refill stations for things like pasta and rice so I can refill my own jars saving on packaging. Cheaper: Bulb makes energy cheaper – they invest in technology to reduce costs, and they pass savings on to their members. Greener: Bulb make energy greener – so they help protect our planet. This isn’t about being do-gooders; it’s just about doing what makes sense for our environment and future generations. And they’re constantly looking to improve. By obsessively listening to their members they want to make the whole energy industry better. W | https://join.bulb.co.uk/ There is much more to do, and I am still learning. I hope that this issue will inspire thinking and inspiration.

can we do more to
travel sustainablY? Before I introduce myself and prescribe some ideas and recommendations to get you travelling more sustainably, I have a few questions for you to answer.
Question 1
Have you ever been in a car (driver or passenger) and made a journey that could have been done by another mode of transport? Unless you have never been in a car, I imagine your answer will be yes.
Question 2
Are you likely to consider other modes of transport if they were made easier (in terms of safety, time, money and convenience)? Hypothetically speaking, your answer is a yes, in reality, it’s not that straight forward. 12
www.yourhealthhub.uk Can we do more to travel sustainably? Do we want to? Do we need to? Hi I’m Ross. I’m a transport planner and the volunteer Chair for an organisation called Modeshift, supporting the delivery of sustainable travel for organisations, schools, communities in the UK. I was born and raised in London, enjoying an integrated transport system for the majority of my life before moving to Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire nine years ago. I own and drive a car for multiple types of trips. I’m fully on-board, as are the majority of people in the UK believing that we need to pick up our game and be more proactive when it comes to sustainability. I need to switch out more car trips for alternative modes of travel and to do that I need to focus on what I can do, rather than what others can do for me. For example, it’s easy to fall into the trap of ‘Why don’t THEY build more cycle lanes’? Why don’t THEY make buses free and more regular’? These examples are outside of my control and sit within what’s called ‘The Circle of Concern’. They are what concern me; they drive negative thoughts with zero action. In order to be proactive, I need to focus more on my ‘Circle of Influence’. This is where I take action, I make commitments and promises. For example ‘I’ll try something new’, ‘I’ll get more information’, ‘I can’t change every journey but I can change that one’. See the difference? So if you’re willing to be proactive, what next? Modeshift STARS is a free scheme for all schools in England. Schools can sign up, get ideas, bring about positive change and receive an award for their achievements. There is also a Business version for organisations to sign-up and get involved. Like the school’s scheme, there are loads of ideas and an accreditation scheme to participate in. LEARN:

• Switch out a journey to another mode, look to car share (search lift share or clubs in your areas), perhaps park further away and walk the rest of the journey
inform:
• Share what you are doing with family, friends and colleagues • Many schools and businesses around the country are very supportive of sustainable travel. Why not see what they are doing already, and if that’s nothing or very little, here are some ideas
Changing your travel behaviour is not only good for the environment, it can also save you money and help you lead a healthier life, but you know that already. So, don’t wait for something to happen, be proactive and make a change.

Period poverty and the use of sustainable products by ActionAid UK
poverty
How much are you spending on periods in your lifetime? Our calculator gives a stark reminder of the financial burden of menstruating. As a result of this cost, millions of women and girls worldwide can’t afford to buy or access the

safe sanitary products they need to manage their periods without shame or stigma. In the countries that ActionAid UK works in, women and girls are often forced to use whatever they can to manage their periods, including rags, newspapers and even tree leaves. Those who have some pads may also have no choice but to re-use the same one for many days – putting their health at serious risk. These same women and girls often face local taboos about menstruation as well, which restrict their way of life further. For example, in some cultures menstruating women and girls are prohibited from using salt in their cooking; milking animals, and touching other family members during their cycle. They are also told they can’t get pregnant if they
www.yourhealthhub.uk have sex while they have their period. Girls we work with have also reported facing ridicule at school when menstrual blood has leaked through their clothing leading to missed days and some drop out altogether. It’s estimated that one in 10 girls in Africa will miss school when they have their periods. Missing school or work, in the long run, can have a devastating impact on their potential to live a normal life, support themselves and contribute to their communities. Additionally, girls missing out on school can leave them

who has to leave her family every time she has a period because it’s believed she will bring bad luck. She is forced to live alone in a remote, windowless mud hut without warm clothes or running water. “I’m scared to stay alone in the hut”, she says, “I’m scared of ghosts and snakes [and that] bad people will come and attack me.” This practice is called chauppadi and although it has been illegal since 2005, it’s still practised in many communities. In recent years, at least two girls are known to have died as a result of it.
more vulnerable to child marriage and early pregnancy – ultimately denying them their basic right to be educated and reach their potential. Mass-produced; disposable sanitary products are also harming the environment due to containing non-biodegradable materials. Most sanitary pads contain up to 90 per cent plastic, for example, while tampons have plastic applicators. This large-scale plastic production releases vast amounts of greenhouse gases which cause air pollution and global warming. Improper disposal of sanitary products such as wrapping them in plastic bags also fills up landfills and takes years to biodegrade. Some sanitary products are also flushed down the toilet, which could mean that they end up in the sea and washed up on our beaches. This has detrimental effects for humans, the wildlife and our land and oceans.
15
in focus
ActionAid UK is running programmes worldwide to put an end to these problems for good.
We train women and girls to make reusable sanitary pads, so they always have access to clean and affordable sanitary products, and will always try to implement sustainable solutions, such as reusable DIY cloth pads. For example, in a pilot project in Malawi women and girls are trained to make DIY pads with sewing machines to then sell at the local market for a small sum supporting them to become economically independent, and supporting girls education by distributing them in local schools. https://www.actionaid.org.uk/ blog/news/2019/05/24/how-to-make-your-ownreusable-sanitary-pads In many countries, and with support from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, our biggest donor, we have also opened more girls’ rooms in schools, where girls can get changed, use the toilet, access free fabric pads and learn sewing skills to make their own. They can also access more information about their periods, sex and pregnancy in these safe spaces, so they are better informed about their bodies. And, where appropriate, we distribute menstrual cups to women and girls. Menstrual 16
cups are made of silicone and last 10 years, leaving very little waste. They are also easy to use and safe as they can be sterilised using boiling water. Our work increases girls’ choice and access to sanitary products, putting their voices front and centre when determining which products are most useful for their communities as well as for the environment. In some situations, such as humanitarian emergencies, it is difficult to promote sustainable options. If there is no running water or means of cleaning and sewing, reusable pads and menstrual cups are not effective. At times like this, we need public support to provide thousands of women and girls with hygiene kits that contain more traditional sanitary pads. Ultimately however, our focus is on ending gender inequality because this is what causes period poverty. We need to tackle the gender injustice that allows periods to hold women and girls back from reaching their full potential and progress.

what’s the
frequency?
What every health practitioner needs to tell their clients, friends, family and everyone about nnEMF Firstly what is nnEMF? EMF stands for Electro-Magnetic Frequency. You may remember you learnt about this in Physics at school. EMF describes any frequency from very high-frequency gamma rays down through x-rays, ultra-violet, visible light, infrared, microwaves to radio waves. EMF is measured in Hertz (Hz – Frequency), this is the number of cycles (waves) per second. The more cycles per second the higher the power (energy) of the wave depending on Amplitude – how big the wave is. The “nn” bit – this stands for non-native, i.e. man-made. 20
A couple of hundred years ago, there was very little or zero man-made EMF, no light (bar fire or lamps), no electricity, no radio, no microwaves, no TV, satellites, mobile phones, Bluetooth. The only EMFs that existed were natural from the sun, the earth and stars. This is what we evolved with, developed with over millions of years from when the earth held just basic life all the way up to the 18th/19th Century. Is it that risky? Yes and no. We are exposed to all sorts of naturally occurring EMF, most of which is beneficial. Infra-red is becoming a widely popular therapy method for many conditions of the skin and soft tissues, visible light is pretty handy, there are even many positive effects of UVA and UVB for hormone production, sleep, cell health and much more.
www.yourhealthhub.uk
There was a saying in the Army Corps that I worked in – “Like horse manure, spread it thinly and it helps the crops grow, however, if you keep it all in one place it just becomes a steaming pile of sh1t”. EMF is a bit like this. What comes naturally is what is ideal, it’s just that our lives have changed to unnatural. Nature spreads the muck far and wide and there should be a happy healthy environment. The problem - we have abused the sub-visible light spectrum. Microwave, radio wave, phone networks have pulled up a huge steaming pile of muck where there simply shouldn’t be. We are not adapted to the volume of frequencies and constant bombardment from this area of the spectrum and it’s getting worse. You may hear arguments of “it is non-ionising” which means it doesn’t directly damage the cell. It is also true that visible light has far more energy than these frequencies being used for communication. However, we know that this is not strictly true, just look in your kitchen. Does
the food in your microwave come out cold? Having worked on RADAR in my time in the Army, I also know how significantly dangerous non-ionising radiation can be. The EMF used in these devices GIVE energy to what they come into contact with. Like water, of which you are approximately 70%, give it enough energy and it boils. The frequencies that are being used can interrupt cellular signalling. Blue light (out of context from the Sun) affects vision and sleep hormone production, in turn effecting weight gain, mood, brain fog and gut function. Mobile phone network frequencies (which are becoming denser) and WiFi have a more serious effect of cells opening up VGCC (Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels), this lets calcium move more freely around your body rather than staying where it is needed, within the cell. This can cause free radical production, stress and inflammation which is known to cause at least 70% (up to 90%) of the worlds chronic disease. Avoidance and mitigation are key. Switch off WiFi, tablets, computers, Bluetooth, TV, smart meters and phones – they are affecting your health. How many devices are around your home? How many can you switch off? Do it now.

Today protecting our environment is a priority for everyone and charity shops have been at the forefront of championing sustainability for years.
Returned
to Glory
The Charity Retail Association, the voice of charity retail reported that each year the charity sector is able to sell or recycle over 90% of donated clothing, over 90% of donated books and 85% of donated electrical goods. This diverts waste away from landfill – 373,000 tonnes each year alone whilst improving recycling and re-use rates. It also reduces C02 emissions by over 7 million tonnes in the process. The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted celebrates its 40th birthday this year and its overarching aim it to help people live 24
their precious lives well. All hospice care is provided free and, to fund the very special work they do in the local community, the Hospice needs to raise over £5 million pounds each year. Their shops play a vital role in raising this money making over £100,000 a year alone by recycling clothes which cannot be sold. The Hospice’s furniture showroom Returned to Glory goes one step further. By repairing, renovating and upcycling unloved pieces that would otherwise be disposed of, the team of talented volunteers at Returned to Glory transform undesirable items of furniture. It has a growing range of eco-friendly products from beeswax wraps and insect hotels to recycled coffee cups, glasses and bags. Buyers are focusing on sourcing more of these products when they visit trade shows as well as supporting local artists and craftsmen and number twenty’s recent success in winning Dacorum Business Heroes Award reflects this. Shopping in charity shops mean you can shop guilt-free and support the environment too. By shopping at one of The Hospice’s eight shops, not only is there is the opportunity to grab a wonderful bargain, you also have the satisfaction of knowing you are contributing to a sustainable society with all the money raised going to support the very special work the Hospice does in the local community.

Green & Away Green & Away is the UK’s oldest environmental conference centre - now an all purpose outdoor venue. In 2020 it celebrates its 30th birthday after providing a space for outdoor environmentally sound conferences and events for a wide range of organisations. Each year Green & Away builds a village under canvas near Worcester for 200 people - kitchen, cafe, meeting spaces, furnished bedroom tents, solar electricity, composting toilets, wood showers, all using a team of volunteers, and we use the site to teach about the environment. When it began, it was the only venue in Europe set up to be environmentally sustainable. Now every year we see a steady flow of interns and volunteers learning about how to run an environmentally sound human settlement at first hand. Our first events were for organisations in the environmental movement - the Soil Association, the Green Party, the New Economics Foundation etc. Now we also cater for weddings, anniversary

The countryside location is perfect for exploring on foot, or make use of the free bike hire and local cycle routes. Framlingham is just 4 miles away, and the beautiful coastline is just 10 miles from the site. Our ethos is that events must be beautiful and comfortable, and that the reason so many decisions our species make are bad for the planet is because we live our lives separated from nature. At Green & Away we live closer to nature, so we can appreciate the changes we need to make to live more sustainably. ecoYoga, Argyll Nick and Rachel created the ecoYoga Centre at Inverliever Lodge as an expression of their belief in a healthy, happy, carbon-free and sustainable lifestyle. The transformation from an old outdoor centre to its present incarnation as a luxurious but still genuinely ‘eco’ holiday experience is now complete. Set in magnificent Scottish scenery; hills, lochs, rivers and forests abound. The ecoYoga Centre is totally off-grid, powered by our small hydro-electric power
station, plus solar panels. Our water comes directly from a natural spring situated just above the centre, making us both ‘off-grid’ and truly sustainable. Relax and rejuvenate in luxurious ‘eco’ style by soaking in our natural wooden hot tub, or in one of our hideaway bathing spots near the river. We run yoga retreats throughout the year or when retreats are not running stay with us on a self-catering basis. T | 01546 810259 W | ecoyoga.org E | info@ecoyoga.org 33

Did you know
Individually, we don’t have the power to change the air outside of our homes, but we can do a lot to change what’s within it. (Keep putting pressure on your local MPs and more to change the air, though!)
that changing environmental factors in our lives can override a genetic predisposition towards developing a disease? This is a huge idea to get our heads around. It boils down to this: we have within our power the choice to help avoid conditions eg arthritis by addressing the way we live, eat, play, sleep and manage our stress!
a herbalists view on
environmental health Think about what you breathe, what you clean with, what you put on your skin/hair/ teeth. All of these things can bring additional chemical load to our bodies. When our bodies are exposed to chemicals in the outdoor environment, we assume that our bodies will get on and deal with it. And, most of the time they do. This is called detoxification and is an on-going natural process your body is undertaking right now involving your liver, kidneys, skin, immune and lymph systems.
Home air:
Do you have air fresheners? Many of these contain chemicals which have long-term negative impacts on aquatic environments. What might it be doing to your body – after all, our chemical make-up is largely water?

www.yourhealthhub.uk House and body cleaning products:
Look under your kitchen sink and at the back of your toiletries. Look at all those hazard warnings which end up in our water system! Try out some green cleaning methods (white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda +/- tea tree oil does wonders) or a good old-fashioned detergent-based cleaner! I effectively clean inside the glass oven door with bicarb and a bit of elbow grease, it just lifts off the grime! Bleach is another one. Kills *all* known germs… that includes ones we need to live a healthy life. Bacterial resistance is contributed to by the use of anti-bacterial agents. They are non-specific and kill off both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria. Antibacterial handwashes remove the commensal ‘good’ bacteria protecting your skin as well as the ‘bad’. Soap and hot water will remove the nasties
better than eg a sanitiser and leave your skin protected. Alternative brands I like are: Green Wyse (great handmade vegan products by herbalist Dawn Ireland; plastic-free for years), Avalon Organics, Faith in Nature, Neal’s Yard Remedies. They may be a little more expensive but when we spend a bit more, we buy less and actually use them up! Double bonus?
Making you feel the need to ‘detox’?
Clear out your toxic cupboards and clean up your diet with loads of green and colourful vegetables to assist your natural cleaning systems. (I am not fond of the term ‘Detox’ because it’s often touted as a lifestyle holiday for 2 weeks after which normal service resumes once again. Our bodies are in a constant state of detoxification; a natural biological process. It doesn’t happen in a tea bag once per week!)

why is pure
drinking water
so important for us?
For good health, we need safe, healthy and supportive environments. The environment we live in determines our wellbeing. Factors such as water contaminants, air quality, food and many more affect our health. Pure drinking water is one of the most important factors. Did you know that contaminated water can impose serious health risks to the human body as well as marine life? Contaminants like heavy metals, chlorine, hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides, bacteria etc. in your drinking water are harmful for all of us and affect our health but also the entire eco system. When water leaves the treatment plants it travels for hundreds of miles through pipes that have been underground since Victorian times. By the time it reaches our homes, it has picked up more contaminants through those pipes that are all affecting our health in negative ways. Plastic water bottles are also no better solution as this is equally impacting the environment and air as well as human beings due to plastic leaching into the water. The 36
impact of this, a new study suggests that globally we are ingesting an average of 5 grams of plastic every week, the equivalent of a credit card. This contamination comes from micro plastics which are making their way into our food, drinking water and even the air which long term effects on our mind, body and overall health.
What’s the solution?
Investing in a high quality under the sink filtration system means healthy drinking water straight from your tap at home, completely contaminant free, no more waste from plastic bottles and saves money. The body consists of more than 70% of water and hence clean, filtered water is the best beverage to hydrate our cells to live a long, healthy life.

what do you see?
www.yourhealthhub.uk
Chances are, you will pass sights like this every day, but how much do you notice them? Perhaps you noticed a queue of people at a bus stop? What about a pile of free newspapers which were blowing down the street? Most of you wouldn’t have noticed, but why would you fail to spot those examples, when you would probably have noticed that supermarket trolley parked in the middle of the pavement, or in someone’s front garden? It’s because the human brain doesn’t consciously pick up on lots of things that we see every day. We are more likely to take notice of things which are different; things which seem out of place. Do we notice a homeless person? Homelessness has risen by more than 150% over the past 10 years, and rough sleeping has more than trebled. With the number of rough sleepers reaching these levels, it is not out of place to see someone bedding down in a doorway or sleeping on the pavement. It’s so common, it’s almost like that queue of people or the flying newspapers you missed earlier. The causes of homelessness are varied and include, family breakdown, domestic violence, mental health issues, addictions and poverty. I often hear “people sleep rough by choice.” Put yourself in that position. Would you leave your life to sleep in a doorway? How would you like to get a mental health issue, get physically attacked and verbally abused for no reason other than you are homeless? According to the Crisis report ‘Silent Killer’, you will die about 30 years before you would have. Wise choice? Of course not!
People don’t choose to become homeless, they become homeless as a consequence; a result, of many missed opportunities, but there are some practical things we can all do to begin to redress the problem.
1
Notice them. Homeless people are not a queue of people waiting for a bus, or newspapers rolling down the street; take some time to notice them.
2
Don’t judge. If your world fell apart, what would happen to you, where would you end up?
3
Give them money. As an exrough sleeper, I got a lot more from someone sitting down with a sandwich or a coffee and just talking. Not probing questions about my issues, but normal things, the weather, the football. It made me feel human, starting my journey to becoming the Director of Expert Focus.
4
Do something practical. Homeless people can now register for a GP (without ID or an address) but sometimes need some support to navigate the system, spare some time and help them. Don’t be afraid to ask if they need help to fill in forms for healthcare, housing or benefits.
5
Join in the conversation. Homelessness always rises up the agenda in the run-up to Christmas or when it serves a political purpose for example when there’s an election. Keeping the conversation going will mean that homelessness becomes more than rhetoric or lip service and collectively we can begin looking for more sustainable solutions to the problem.

wellness techniques:
Grounding
Something that’s been coming up a lot in sessions lately is that many people aren’t grounded. It’s understandable in this day and age, with all the stress, busyness and worry of everyday life. We can feel a bit flighty, up in our heads, in our thoughts; which can often lead to feeling overwhelmed and anxious. This isn’t helped by all the electromagnetic radiation from wifi, mobile phones, computers etc that induce voltages in our bodies that can disrupt our electrical system; which is so vital in how our body functions. So if we experience symptoms such as overthinking, nervousness or irritability, we may need to ground ourselves. Just like a plug needs to be earthed, so do we. I first became aware of grounding nearly 10 years ago when I started my first massage course. We would practice Chi Kung (Qi Gong) for an hour in the morning before teaching began. It helped me to feel calm, clear-headed and more centred - it set me up for the day in 42
the most lovely way. There are many techniques that can help us feel grounded and here are just a few.
Earthing/Getting out in nature
The Earth emits negatively charged free electrons which help to balance the positive charge in our bodies from free radicals and electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) in our environment. Walking barefoot in nature is especially helpful as we have direct contact with this natural energy. You can find out more about the health benefits and scientific research of earthing, by visiting www.groundology.co.uk
www.yourhealthhub.uk
Tree visualization/meditation
Mindful walking
Energy flows where attention goes, so by bringing our awareness to our feet as we walk, we help to bring energy that’s often in our heads, down to our feet. Spend a few minutes slowly walking around, placing most of your attention on your feet. Notice how they make contact with the ground, feel the sensations in your feet.
W | lucydebarr.com T | 07919 184790 E | hello@lucydebarr.com
This is a Chi Kung exercise that you can do for 3 – 5 minutes. Stand with feet shoulder width apart and facing forward. Soften (unlock) the knees, relax the shoulders and lightly place your tongue on the roof of your mouth, keeping the jaw nice and relaxed. Place your hands, one on top of the other, over your navel – this is called your ‘Dantian’, the primary energy centre of the body (located 1.5 thumb widths below the belly button and 2 – 3 thumb widths inward). Breathe comfortably and slowly through the nose and with each exhale, feel your bodyweight sink down to your feet, until they feel planted on the ground. Then imagine energetic roots growing from the soles of each foot down to the earth below...moving down further, deeper into the Earth, all the way down to the centre. Then picture your roots wrapping around Earth’s core. With each inhale, visualise your roots drawing energy from the centre, all the way up through the Earth, into the soles of each foot; flowing up through your legs, into your Dantian. Picture it filling up with this grounding, supportive energy. Then imagine the energy in your Dantian expanding out into your whole body. If you feel any tensions or stress anywhere, imagine them dissolving into the Earth with each exhale. 43
Health & Wellbeing
Many of us spend a great deal of time indoors, whether it is at home or at work, but do we ever think about air quality?
the holsistic home –
air purifying plants We are breathing in toxins emitted from chemicals in furnishings, bacteria, mould and stale air, especially in poorly ventilated areas. Luckily mother nature can give us a helping hand with plants that help to purify air. Adding one of these potted plants to a room can help improve the air, and absorb some of the nasties. As well as taking in the carbon dioxide and converting to oxygen (photosynthesis), the microbes in the soil also help with air cleaning. 44

Some suggested top air cleaning house plants: (Chrysanthemum Morifolium) Garden Mum. Nasa research showed this plant to be a super cleanser. It removed ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and xylene from the air (and you can plant it outside once it has stopped flowering). (Chlorophyum Comosum “vittatum”) Spider Plant. This easy to grow plant removes formaldehyde and xylene. It is my personal favourite as it survives my very non green fingers! (Dracaena spp.) Dracena. Probably best in the office, as is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, but it is a great plant for removing benzyne, formaldehyde, xylene and trichloroethylene. (Ficus Benjamina) Weeping Fig. A good plant if you have space as it can grow from 2-10ft tall! But will remove benzyne, formaldehyde and triloroethylene. (Spathiphyllum sp.) Peace Lilly. A beautiful little plant, which still packs a punch, removing ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. Its fragrant blooms will produce pollen, so if you have sensitivities to its pollen it can live outside in the shade until its finished flowering. Others you can add to the list: Aloe Vera, Boston Fern, Snake Plant and Bamboo Palm.
“The NASA Clean Air Study[1] was led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in association with the Associated 02/01/2018 Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA). Its results suggest that certain common indoor plants may provide a natural way of removing toxic agents such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from the air...

Goddess Women - How many of you hide away? Cover up? Dim your shine? Forget to love yourself? How many of you lack self-belief and confidence? Shrink behind the views of others? How many of you have lost yourself? Forgotten your purpose? Live your life confined within perceptions that society puts on you? How many of you do yourselves injustices every day by belittling yourself? Hating your body? Not honouring your radiance? And… how many of you actually remember how truly magnificent you are? We sadly live in a world where airbrushing is considered standard in order to achieve beauty, and filters are the norm. But behind closed doors, we live with “reality”. We see glossy magazines with “the perfect woman” who has it all and looks a million dollars, whilst we stand in front of the mirror and see the truth – often leaving us swimming in feelings of inadequacy. And in amongst the alienation, we lose ourselves. Lose our love for our bodies and walk in skin that we detest due to its lack of apparent perfection. 48
But, the time has come for you to break free. To start realising your beauty again. And Following the power of The Divine Feminine, and Goddess energy will help you to do that! Multiple prehistoric Goddess carvings have beendiscovered all over the world – the most famous being Venus of Willendorf, discovered in Austria in 1908. These ancient carvings represent the epitome of feminine beauty, flaunting the abundance of the fully figured Goddess – naked, unhidden and proud. They have been discovered everywhere that humanity has settled and thrived, clearly showing that there was a time when the power of womanhood was sacred and revered in all of her glory, regardless of her body shape. Today our patriarchal society determines conformity in women - a demand so high that thecontinuous strive to achieve and maintain a body that is unrealistic often results in never

feeling good enough. But these carvings of voluptuous Goddesses with rounded stomachs and breasts that do not defy gravity are re-emerging to teach us to embrace and worship our bodies just the way they are. Sadly, throughout the ages, our thoughts about our bodies and how they should look have become blurred and it is our duty to change that now - not only for ourselves, but also for our daughters and granddaughters. It is time for you to be worshipped again. And this begins with the way that you feel about yourself. Body image insecurities can affect our selfesteem, self-worth and self-confidence, and by trying to obtain the unrealistic perfection portrayed by the media and constantly comparing ourselves to others, we feel as if we are walking the path of worthlessness. But what if there was a different road? The
path of the Goddess? The way of the Divine Feminine? Divine Feminine energy is the female force that is within us all. The strength and the power of being a woman. It is the nourishing energy of love, compassion, healing and transformation, which can open the gates to limitless self-love, adoration and self-worship, enabling us to have a positive and healthy relationship with our body, and loving and honouring ourselves exactly as we are. By increasing our Goddess Consciousness, we can empower ourselves to step into our true potential as women, and as soon as we realise that we hold Goddess energy within, there will absolutely be no stopping us! And this is how my paintings inspire women. They are not whimsical, unreachable, perfect Goddess archetypes. They are real women – with their beautiful bodies, perfect in their imperfections – radiant in their life contours. It is time to stand in the glory of the real ladies in these paintings – all Goddesses - all real women. It is time for you to stand in the glory and wonder of the REAL WOMAN that you see in front of you when you look in the mirror. And to know that there is no difference, no separation between us and Goddess. We are all one. We are all Goddesses. We are She. The I AM SHE project and the Imperfectly Fabulous Empowering Affirmation Cards for 21stCentury Goddesses were painted and created to smash our current beliefs of “not being enough”, in a bid to bring into consciousness the imperfect perfection of the female form - whatever shape it takes. To awaken the Goddess warrior and Divine Feminine within and reconnect with self-love. Real women. Real shapes... no shame. Stop comparing. Stop checking and practise self-acceptance. Love your body - have gratitude for your abundant flesh. Kiss your voluptuous rolls 49
Health & Wellbeing “too saggy”… just stop, breathe and raise the Divine Feminine within – and remind yourself who you are. Connect with Goddess energy in general or any particular Goddesses that resonate personally with you and walk their walk. Channel their energy and feel their warrior strength – adored and strong. It doesn’t matter who you ask – as long as you’re empowering yourself as a woman and invoking matriarchal energies and attitudes. As long as you remember that YOU are already the Goddess. We are already all Goddesses. Walking in our own power. Rising our vibrations. Walking our truth. And just think, if we all aimed to lift up the women around us, imagine how much we would all thrive. and sprinkle adoration onto your wonderous breasts. Rejoice as your thighs dance to the story of your life. Reconnect with abundant self-love. The time is now. Women –Stand together. Honour each other – we are not alone. We are one. One divine feminine. One Goddess. I, we, She. No filters, no shame - Just perfection, liberation, beauty and freedom. Because there is no difference between us and Goddess. We are Her. And She is us. We carry the soul of the Goddess, and every time you are feeling as if you are “passed it”, “unworthy”, “fat”, “not good enough”, “too old”, 50

Profhilo is a safe and effective anti-ageing injectable skin care treatment. It nourishes the dermal cells and restores firmness of the skin which counteracts skin laxity. The Bioremodeling which occurs with the product is an innovative approach to antiageing. Due to its high purity and absence of additives, Profhilo offers greater safety and therefore fewer side effects. The treatment regime is 2 sessions separated by 1 month. Results are visible after the 2 sessions and should be repeated twice a year for maximum effect. Profhilo delivers great results as a treatment on its own or in combination with other aesthetic treatments. Since it’s introduction onto the market it has created a real buzz amongst aesthetic practitioners who have deemed it to be ‘the most exciting development in injectable treatments in a long time.’ Once injected, the product immediately starts spreading due to the high concentration of Hyaluronic acid (HA) and its cohesive nature. It is suitable to treat the face, neck, décolletage, hands, inner thighs or indeed any area of skin laxity. With one of the highest concentrations of HA on the market it is not only boosting and hydrating the skin but it also remodels the ageing and sagging tissue.

Minor Surgery What is minor surgery?
Any surgical procedure that can be carried out in a short period of time using a local anaesthetic. Minor surgery must be carried out in a clinic that is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
FAQs
What can be removed?
Lumps and bumps. Skin tags, actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis Millia, benign moles, dermal cysts, cherry angiomas, lipomas Dermatofibroma.
Will it hurt?
A local anaesthetic will be injected around the lesion before it’s removed. There may be some mild discomfort, however nearly all patients have said it was almost painless.
Who will do the surgery?
Wendy Cousins will carry out the procedures. She will occasionally have some assistance if there are multiple lesions to treat.
How is it done?
A variety of techniques are used to remove lesions including cryotherapy, electrolysis, curettage, shave excision, incision and excision. The method used will depend on the size and local of the lesion.
What happens after?
Once the procedure is completed you will receive comprehensive aftercare advice. This will include what to do if you have any concerns. You will be given a follow up appointment if any sutures have to be removed. 52
www.yourhealthhub.uk
How will I know if it’s malignant?
If a lesion is removed and looks suspicious it will be sent to Histopathology. You will receive a full report of the result to keep for your records or pass on to your GP.
Will it leave a scar?
Generally the larger the lesion is, the harder it is to remove. There may be a scar once the wound has healed. The degree of scarring will depend on your age, location of lesion and method of removal.
Will the lesion come back?
There is a small risk that the lesion may return after treatment. This can occur with any lesion
but is most common with dermal cysts, skin tags and lipomas. This will be discussed during the consultation.
How much will it cost?
Initial consultations are free of charge. The price for the surgical procedure will vary from ÂŁ250 and will depend on the size, the method of removal and the number of lesions to be removed. A full cost will be given at consultation. Contact Wendy at Tocolo: T | 07824 553735 E | enquiries@tocolo.co.uk W | tocolo.co.uk Facebook | Tocolo Practitioner 53

Acupuncture – Carmel Twomey Within each of us, there are ‘energy pathways’ or ‘meridians’ where ‘chi’ (energy) flows. These meridians, named after the organ they originate in (eg. kidney channel, liver channel etc), run all over the body. Where they reach the surface, the Acupuncture needle(s) are inserted to affect a change, not only in the meridian but also the associated organ. As the therapist, I am purely a ‘messenger’, facilitating the bodies natural ability to heal. There is a misconception that the treatment is painful, a competent practitioner will insert and carry out the treatment painlessly for the most part. Treatments are surprisingly relaxing.
