Aussies delay life goals to achieve dreams A NATIONAL survey commissioned by industry super fund-owned ME Bank found Australians are putting off major life goals to achieve the great Australian dream of buying a home. ME Bank surveyed 2036 people and asked if they had to sacrifice life goals to buy their first homes. Nearly half revealed they have done exactly that to secure a foot on the property ladder. Delaying or downgrading holidays is the most common sacrifice (30 per cent of

respondents), followed by delaying or downgrading a car purchase (21 per cent). Love, marriage and babies also get sacrificed in favour of buying and paying off a home. The research found 69 per cent of Generation Y put off life goals in order to commit to a mortgage, significantly more than Gen X at 46 per cent or Baby Boomers at 41 per cent. “Everyone who buys a house makes sacrifices in order to meet that commitment but it’s getting more dif-

Yorke Peninsula Real Estate’s Kym Stanitzki said low interest rates should stimulate buying activity across the peninsula in 2016. THE real estate market has had mixed results during 2015. However, 2016 should feature a spike in interest, according to Yorke Peninsula Real Estate principal Kym Stanitzki. Mr Stanitzki said the first six months of this year were fair, but there was a significant drop in enquiries during the second half of the year. “It appears the fear of unemployment is having a negative impact on the holiday market and the traditionally strong retiree market has softened significantly during the past three to four years,” Mr Stanitzki said. “Even internet traffic which has been growing each year has softened by 31 per cent for the August, September and October period this year compared with last year. “The current market has a similar feel to the late 2008 period at the height of the Global Financial Crisis when enquiry stalled.” Mr Stanitzki said enquiries improved in January 2009, when a huge influx of tourists came to the peninsula. “Sales followed and strengthened each month until June/July when the market was strong,” he said. “With real estate values softening 5 to 10 per cent during the past two years we are now offering very good value. “This, combined with exceptionally low interest rates, should again stimulate buying activity across the peninsula in 2016.”

Building approvals hit three-month high BUILDING approvals hit a threemonth high in October, the most recent month data is available, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. There were 19,652 dwellings approved for construction during October, which is 3.9 per cent more than the previous month. “In Australia, we are wedded to the idea of having a three-bedroom, free-standing home with a backyard,” Mortgage Choice chief executive officer John Flavell said. “While apartment construction is helping to meet some of the demand, the reality is, the demand for houses is not going to

disappear overnight.” While total dwelling approvals were up, the number of private sector houses approved for construction was down by 2.1 per cent on the month before. “The last time 9300 private houses were approved for construction was back in September 2014 – more than 12 months ago,” Mr Flavell said. “Data from CoreLogic RP Data shows houses have a higher capital growth rate than apartments because this type of dwelling is more desirable.” Country Living Homes managing director Mark Ravenscroft

said, locally, there has been a downturn in the building industry. “Builders’ margins aren’t as high as they have been in the past, such as four to five years ago, when the building industry was booming,” Mr Ravenscroft said. “Interest rates are also at an alltime low which is positive for clients who can lock in low, affordable interest rates for four to five years and have peace of mind the payments won’t be changing for such a long period. “Land prices have also dropped which is making building an affordable and realistic opportunity for clients.”
