James was also the association’s leading goal kicker in 1997 and 1998, has played more than 250 games for the club, including multiple premierships, and has been a captain, coach and club official.

Wallaroo Football Club is celebrating an incredible milestone, notching up 150 years.

Festivities have been planned to coincide with the club’s round one match against CMS Crows at Wallaroo this Saturday, April 1.

President Chris Johns said A grade players will wear heritage guernseys for their match with one to be auctioned that night.

Dinner will be available at the clubhouse, with an entertaining and interesting evening planned to pay tribute to the club.

“We’ve got a guest speaker — Johnny Ryan, coach of the 1976 A grade premiership side — plus will have speakers talk a bit about the history of the club,” Chris said.

“We’ll have information and memorabilia around the clubhouse for people to look at.

“People will be able to mingle and have a good time and catch up; there will be people coming from all over the state and interstate.”

Wallaroo Football Club was formed by Wallaroo Cricket Club in 1867 because it wanted to keep its players fit and busy during the offseason.

Its first match was against Moonta.

The club has had its fair share of success, winning 22 A grade premierships since 1900.

The Bulldogs have won three consecutive premierships on three occasions — 1913-15, 1952-54 and 1995-98.

The 1990s were a particularly successful era with the club claiming five A grade

premierships, four of those seasons the B grade won as well.

The first life membership was awarded to RA Edwards in 1945.

Since then, 78 others have been made life members, the most recent being Dennis Miller in 2014.

The current oldest living life member is Joan Scholefield and oldest life member who was a former player is Keith Smith.

Football has been a permanent fixture in the town since the club’s inception, aside from in 1942, 1943 and 1944 when no matches were played due to World War II. Times have certainly changed since the game was first played in Wallaroo, with players in 1878 charged for using insulting language and fighting and having to appear in the police court.

The ball transitioned from being round to oval.

Training also went a little differently.

As recorded in an article in the Wallaroo Times on July 10, 1867, “Messers Holmes and Gouge having chosen sides, the game commenced with a total strength of 12 players,” it read.

“It soon became evident that the sides were not sufficiently strong to keep up the game for any length of time, and towards four o’clock the players began to ‘drop off’ and the game closed, neither side having obtained a goal.

“Football is a very healthy exercise for the limbs and muscles at this season of the year, and we recommend all, who are in the position to devote the time, to join the club.”

Coach’s comments with Brendan McKeough How has preseason gone?

I’m really happy with the way preseason has been going. We’ve had good numbers and the feedback I’ve been getting is the sessions are as good as they have been for the past several seasons. I couldn’t be happier with the way the boys have gone about it, especially in the February block which was pretty tough.

We have had trial games at Paskeville and against South Clare.

What are your expectations for this season?

We have no expectations, we are just looking to become as competitive as possible. We’re looking to return to being a stable club and getting back to basics, and being competitive every time we take the field. The best news around the club is the return of the senior colts team. It’s as good a news as possible in our club because the strength of our club is in our juniors. It means we don’t have to try to recruit half a team and we can rely on the kids coming through.

Who will be the team to beat, and who could be a dark horse?

The team to beat will be Moonta, and the dark horse should be Kadina.

Numbers bounce back After struggling for senior player numbers in 2016, Ardrossan has had 44 seniors register for 2017.

Junior numbers are also strong with 34 very enthusiastic players signed up.

“We have some wonderful coaches to support and develop them during the season,” president Kerry Lutze said.

The juniors are also looking forward to an excursion to see the Adelaide Thunderbirds play in Adelaide.

Senior trials have been held on Wednesday nights, with trainings every Saturday since February 4.

“The first session was kicked off by our own Kate Easther (now playing for Matrics in Premier League) who offered an enjoyable yet challenging session for our seniors,” Kerry said, With positivity high, the club is hoping to

build on the efforts of its D grade which competed in last year’s finals.

“This certainly was the highlight for our club as finals campaigns have been few and far between!” Kerry said.

“In 2016, we saw the strength of our players, parents, supporters and social members supporting the club at social events and assisting in all fundraisers and on Saturdays for any netball duties.

“Our social committee is quite active, it is planning a few social events throughout the coming season and some joint events with the footballers on home games.

“The first fundraiser is our players’ auction which will be at the club on our first home game on April 8.

“The seniors will cook up a storm with their egg and bacon sandwiches available on home games every week.”

Paskeville. The Magpies are like a well-oiled machine. Its players gel beautifully and, if under the guidance of Fiona Bussenschutt, is a force to be reckoned with.

A grade dark horse team and why?

Southern Eagles. If they have retained some of their younger brigade from 2016, I think they will come out stronger and more competitive in 2017.

A grade player losses and gains?

We have lost our 2016 coach Izzy Jacobs, plus Brooke Ottey and Abbie Hicks. In our current A/B squad, Hannah Clift has returned to the club, we hope to re-gain Elle Hollitt and we have picked up Emma Wood and Taylor Winstanley, both from Adelaide.

Meagan said preseason and trainings have been going really well.

“The sessions have been well planned and the energy on the court has been excellent,” she said.

“New lights have been installed by the Bute Sporting Club during summer and they are excellent for training under.

“We have about 36 senior players registered and 35 juniors. We have several new coaches in place YOUTH… Bute will aim to build on its progress from last year with the continued with lots of new ideas are we are planning skill development of young players led by player/coach Renee Drewett. building sessions for the juniors this year.”

How has preseason gone?

Preseason has been a little bit interrupted thanks to a long harvest, but the boys have got the miles in their legs. We’ve had a couple of group sessions which have been good and the top 25 or so players are training regularly. We played a six-quarter trial against Fitzroy and another against Hummocks.

What are your expectations for this season?

We haven’t really sat down and discussed long-term expectations for the season. We have short-term goals we hope to meet by Easter and at that point we’ll sit down and re-evaluate our goals for the season. The Rooster Ball is always exciting for the club and we look forward to continuing to encourage the off-field culture that has been strong for the past few years by getting blokes to hang around after the game and join in the fun. We’re hoping to get on-field results to make the off-field even more enjoyable.

Who will be the team to beat, and who could be a dark horse?

Moonta will again be the team to beat.

When it comes to a dark horse, we’ll wait until we’ve played everyone before deciding that.

A grade team to beat in 2017 and why?

Paskeville — just an all-round brilliant team. They’re a cool headed, well-mannered team and always have top spot.

A grade dark horse team and why?

Bute. We have a few new players up our sleeves this year, you never know what could happen.

A grade player losses and gains?

Loss: Halie Snodgrass, who recently had a baby; we wish her all the best from the club and also myself personally, she was a great person to coach and play alongside last season.

Gains: Marissa Hewett, always a brilliant asset in our A grade; she has so much netball knowledge and skill I would love to embrace this year.

Courtney Thorpe is new to the area and thanks to great recruiting skills from Lori Mildren she has come out and joined the Roosters this year.

She is a very handy mid-courter to gain after losing our faithful Halie.

Up and coming junior players at your club and why?

There are a few girls who have just come into seniors from playing E grade last year and are having a go in the Bs, plus one had a run in the As last year. Britt Herbert and Sydney Wigzell in particular are brilliant players with so much potential, they play at opposite ends of the court, with Britt a shooter and Syd a defender.

Crows flying high after strong 2016 The Crows are building towards another strong year after having six teams compete in finals last season.

“What is even more exciting is we had many players under the age of 20 in our senior ranks last year, and our junior teams and H grade programs continued to grow, so this will ensure the club has success into the future,” president Amanda Pitt said.

“We’ve had good registration numbers in senior and junior grades and will be welcoming a number of new players.”

Preseason started in early January for senior and E grade players.

“It has been one of the most successful turnouts at preseason I have seen in the past four years,” Amanda said.

“Our coaches have been impressed with the commitment, particularly from our younger players, and it’s been really great to see our playing group supporting and pushing each other along.”

The club will continue to develop its coaches through accreditation and in-house coaching courses.

“We are so thrilled to have Tegan Young taking on the A grade this year,” Amanda said.

“Tegan played all her juniors at the Crows and has spent time in Adelaide playing in the Premier League competition so we are very lucky to have her bring this experience and knowledge back to our club.

“What I am even more excited about is our junior coaches, we have three young players who have all put their hand up to take on junior teams this year.

“All our junior players are very lucky to have such a high-calibre coaches to learn from this season.”

The Crows are also aiming to run an umpire’s program.

“We are very lucky to have Sharon Glazbrook coordinating our Green Shirt program, but I think it is important to see us continue to develop our C badged umpires to the next level,” Amanda said.

The club held a season launch event involving a players’ auction and recognising milestone games on the weekend.

Also new is a formal junior netball committee headed by president Kylie Cook, which will reviewing the junior program and development of players, coaches and umpires.

How has preseason gone?

I’m really happy with the skill and fitness levels, and I’d say we’re slightly ahead of where we were last year in terms of preseason preparation. We started the same time as last year, but this is the second year of my preseason program. We have had two trial games, one against Meningie and the other against United.

What are your expectations for this season?

The past two years we have stuck with locals and gone with a youth policy so hopefully our young players will be bigger and more experienced. Our expectations will be no different to last year.

In my opinion we probably overachieved last year — getting to the preliminary final was slightly better than I expected.

But this year we want to be around that mark again.

Who will be the team to beat, and who could be a dark horse?

Moonta will be the team to beat again. The dark horse could come from anywhere. I think the competition is really even, and it was last year as well, at least for the first half of the season. Anyone who didn’t make the finals last year could make a push for the top five.

Wallaroo has recruited very well and I think the Eagles probably underperformed last year so will be hoping to improve this year too.

Paskeville. Pasky has been a tough competitor during the past few years and I believe it has formed well as a club and worked very hard coaching the younger players through the senior grades.

Unfortunately, we have had a bit of player movement this season. Sally-Ann Vivian returns to the Barossa and Chelsea Biddell is taking on new adventures. We have gained key players into our squad such as Tyla Cook, Melissa McSkimming, Brooke Ottey and Tasmyn Biddell, who all have the ability to step up and fill these shoes. We are also excited to have the extremely valuable Felicity Kemp back in the Crows colours.

Up and coming junior players at your club and why?

We continue to have a strong junior base and this year Liliana Alafaci, Bella Campion, Rhiannon McDonnell, Keely Oliver and Tyla Cook will all transition from juniors to seniors. They will be pushing senior players for positions with their talent and enthusiasm and have fit extremely well into trainings.

Coach’s comments with Carey Payne How has preseason been?

Preseason has been really good, most of the lads are looking reasonably fit.

We’ve been getting really good numbers in Adelaide and at home and it’s been a solid preseason. We had a trial game against Greenacres.

What are your expectations for this season?

I think we’re looking alright, we hope to be thereabouts again this year.

Hopefully, we have a better run with injury this year and get a bit better run at finals. We’ll be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the 2007 A and B grade premierships just before round two against Paskeville. This year is also the 20th year of the club being amalgamated, so we’ll celebrate that throughout the season.

Who will be the team to beat, and who could be a dark horse?

Moonta would have to be the team to beat again, and Kadina will be the dark horse.

Losses: Lauren Barnett, Ashton Langford and Jo Davey who might make an appearance later in the year after the birth of her second child.

Gains (to the A/B squad): Sarah Luke, Sheree Tezacker, Annalise Robinson, Taitlyn Tilbrook, Shayla Vince and Siobhan Payne.

Up and coming junior players at your club and why?

Iluka Smith played a couple of games in seniors last year. We look forward to seeing her improve and grow as a netballer.

Juniors leading the charge at Cougars After scooping the pool in the junior competition last year, CY Cougars will be back strong again this season.

“Our junior sides continued to be a source of pride for us winning the E, F and G grade premierships last year,” president Janine Burrows said.

“Junior numbers again cause us problems with enough girls registering for us to field two sides in the F, G and H grades.

“However, we are fortunate to be able to enter sides in the SYP Netball Association and again will be fielding three junior teams in its competition.

“We have had to push some F graders up into E grade as we were a little light in this age group, but consider that it will improve the

netball of those girls stepping up.”

The club has also comfortably filled all senior teams with 40 players registered.

“2016 was very much a rebuilding year for the CY Cougars, we achieved an A grade premiership in 2015 and then had a mass exodus of players, due to more babies but also with players moving on to further their studies or netball careers,” Janine said.

“Our preseason has been well attended considering the early start to the season, a lot of people are still winding up summer sport and this has resulted in a number of clashes, including with court availability.

“We have had a changing of the guard to some degree welcoming Alix Stanton and Jo Davey to the

The club has been working to develop its facilities with a new playground within the court complex, installed by the Apex Club of Maitland.

“The playground will make it a lot safer for the little ones and easier on the parents, rather than walking to the other side of the oval to the football playground,” Janine said.

“This year, we really want to achieve new lighting to all four courts.

“The lighting installation is our major project this year and will be achieved through our awesome

canteen, with thanks and congratulations to Catherine Mack, and also events planned by our social and fundraising committee.”

Kadina v Southern Eagles The Bloodhounds join the long (and less-than-illustrious) list of sides loading up for a tilt at a home grand final. They were not as successful as others, at least not when it came to recruitment.

Rumoured premiership stars did not return. Instead, Kadina did bring back Brendan Papps and the Ellis boys, plus a couple of others. The Eagles have welcomed back some former standouts as well, in Jarrad Redden and Derrick Clarke, both of whom can play in the ruck or up forward. The Bloods should be too strong here, but it will be worth watching for the Jono Lee v Redden match-up alone.

We’re back for another year, and it’s shaping up to be a fantastic season.

Let’s not muck around. Here’s my early assessment of each team: Moonta will win again. The Dees are every bit as good as last year.

The CY Cougars will be just as good as before, which is not quite good enough. The Crows will be just as good as before, which is not quite as good as the Cougars.

Kadina will be better, Pasky will be worse. The Eagles will be better, Wallaroo will be better, Ardrossan will be a bit better and Bute will be Bute.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s make a bet. Which team will make the first complaint about the ramblings of yours truly this season?

Last time around most people were great, choosing to hold their tongue or at least keep their hurt feelings to themselves and their fellow clubpeople.

A couple got so riled up they submitted letters to the paper, and hey, that’s fine! I love the passion. I love bringing it out, regardless of its form.

With that said: a gentle reminder.

Wallaroo certainly looks a lot better on paper than it did last year – gun recruit Luke Harder is my top player to watch in 2017. The Crows look about the same, a couple handy players lost and a couple handy players gained. Last year they were far and away better than Wallaroo. Whilst that gap has closed, I still expect the Crows to be too strong in this contest, due to the more proven locals in their side.

If you do choose to be outright offended by something I say, well I hope you’re not also the kind of person who also bemoans the “political correctness warriors” among us for not being able to take jokes.

What offends people is subjective, and being offended is a choice.

I am offended by kicking

backwards. I’m offended when the only player who wants the ball gets pinged for holding it. I’m offended when I rock up to a ground and the bar’s not open yet. I’m offended when the canteen shuts. I’m very offended when blokes rock up from out of town, collect their paycheques and head home again without grabbing a meal in the clubrooms.

And I’m offended when people say I have no idea what I’m going on about. No, wait, that last one I actually agree with.

Paskeville v CY Cougars The Cougars are on a clear mission – to finish top three, and get another crack at Moonta. Paskeville is more of an unknown. The Magpies have lost a lot of players and apparently are still working on several potential recruits. One can only assume even if a few of these players end up signing, they will not have put in much (if any) of a preseason with Pasky and the team could take a while to click. The Cougars will be far too strong in this one, then enter the bye before another reasonably easy game against Ardrossan.

At the final siren ... Cougars by eight goals.

Bute v Ardrossan Both sides have had some turnover, but nothing that makes me think they will push for the top five. Bute needs some more players to step up. What’s happening with these young lads who have been winning colts flags for Bute/Pasky? Some of them must be ready for a taste of senior footy. Until the numbers improve, the Roosters will remain stuck perpetually filling their team out with low-points (assumedly low-cost) players.

Ardrossan didn’t even have a senior colt side last year and still has better depth, which has allowed the Kangas to recruit a couple of really handy players.

And just like that, netball season is here again!

I suppose I should introduce myself.

I’m Netty Nanna; a former player and official, mother of players and grandmother of even more players.

When you’ve been around netball as long as I have, you’ve seen a few things!

Uniforms, rules and tactics have all evolved over the decades but one thing hasn’t changed — my love of netball.

We all know it’s the greatest sport in the world!

Anyway, I’ve been recruited to tip winners in the Yorke Peninsula Netball Association A grade competition each week.

While I like to think I’ve got my finger on the pulse, it is always difficult to know just what everyone is like before the season starts so the first few rounds will be exciting and there could be some surprises in store.

As well as picking tips, I’ll be reviewing the matches played the previous week and including any news or interesting stories I hear around the courts.

Enough about me, more about my predictions for round one of season 2017.

Moonta has the bye first up so we’ll have to wait another week to see what the Demons have in store for us.

Two of the competition’s dark horses, Kadina and the Eagles, go head-to-head in round one.

The Eagles were very competitive last year, coming fourth, but will be running with nearly a whole new side. Lynlee Hancock is coaching again and has retained Josie Rudduck, a hard-running centre, and clean but effective defender Emily Bajcarz. It will be interesting to see who fills the rest of the side. Kadina also has a few losses from last year’s side but will welcome the return of Hayley Gullery into defence. Kate Schild will also be a handy addition, and with the experience of Sophie Chapman in the middle and Prue Hicks in goals, I think Kadina will come out on top here.

At the final whistle... Kadina by six.

Wallaroo v CMS Crows Wallaroo will be excited to show off its new courts in round one after working very hard to have the new facilities ready. Along with the new-look venue, Wallaroo will also have a new-look side with several losses and gains to the team. While Wallaroo is thrilled to have a new tall goalie on its books in Jo Dawkins, Crows are definitely excited to have two. Tall shooter Jess Cocks will be joined by promising youngster and fellow tall timber Tasmyn Biddell, giving the Crows a very handy forward line. My sources tell me Biddell will be missing from round one so that’s one less tall for Wallaroo to think about, but they’ll likely be dealing with either the speed of playing coach Tegan Young or the strong drives of Lucy Short in the circle. Crows have plenty of depth and I think they’ll take the points here.

At the final whistle... Crows by 10.

Paskeville v CY Cougars Reigning champions Paskeville will come up against 2015 premiers the Cougars. Both teams have changed since they won their flags but Paskeville has retained the most similar line-up.

The Cougars were middle-of-the-road last year but I think they’ll be back stronger this year and this will be an interesting battle. Cougars will be happy to regain Sarah Luke, who will add height to their attack line, and she’ll be put straight to work against Pasky’s playing coach Fiona Bussenschutt. Pasky will be without some key

members of last year’s side, including defender Amie Price, mid-courter Katie Koster and goalie Carrie Ramsey, but always manages to fill gaps with quality players and I think this year will be no different. Pasky will come out on top here but Cougars will give them a good tussle.

At the final whistle... Pasky by eight.

Bute v Ardrossan I think this will be the closest match of the round so would be a great one to watch. Both sides improved hugely last year and would match it with the competition’s top teams for patches, just not whole matches. Hopefully, they will continue to build on that progress and be around the mark this year. Marissa Hewett will certainly

add strength to Bute’s side and, if combined with Hannah Wellington, will make a formidable defence. Although I have heard whispers Hewett is going to be played in goals this season. Izzy Jacobs is a big loss for Ardrossan but it has got a great group of young players who have hopefully taken on board a lot of what she taught them as coach for the past couple of seasons. Ardrossan also has a couple of recruits coming over from Adelaide so it will be interesting to see where they slot into the mix. Bute has lost mid-courter Halie Snodgrass but picked up Courtney Thorpe to step into her position. There are a lot of unknowns in this game but my gut is saying Bute will get a win on the board early.

Kadina keen for the new season Players came in droves keen to wear a Kadina dress this season.

President Carolyn Neumann said the club had 80-90 player registrations.

“Registrations and trials were held in February, with good numbers for all senior and junior grades,” she said.

“Senior trials were over run over a two-week period, where an A/B and C/D squad were chosen, and they have been training for the past few weeks.

“All teams look to be competitive which is great to see.”

The club had an abundance of players in F, G and H grades.

“We have unfortunately had to trial the girls,” Carolyn said.

“The club has done its best to get as many girls in teams and out on court as possible.

“All juniors have started training and I’m sure they are all very excited for the first game!”

The club hopes to continue its strong junior program, with numerous players representing the club at higher levels in 2016.

“Sophie Adams was selected in the YPNA under 15 association team, and Jessie Miller in the B grade association team.

“We also had several junior club players — Saraya Mercer, Eliza Monger, Tiana Rogers and Sophie Venning — who were involved in SAPSASA netball.”

Kadina is thankful for support from the RAA through its Regional Safety Grant, which the club won last year.

“Through this grant we now have four new netball post protectors, which look fantastic with the RAA logo, and we were also able to purchase two new first aid kits,” Carolyn said.

“We were in desperate need of this equipment, and we thank RAA for its support.”

Coach’s comments How has preseason gone?

It’s been good, numbers have been okay and we’re averaging 20 or so every session in Kadina and 14 in Adelaide.

It’s been reasonably tough and they’ve done a fair bit of running. We’ve had a full internal trial and one trial game against Blyth/Snowtown. We have the new logo for a new era, and a fresh new look on field, but the five local lads returning to play footy at home is probably as big a news as any.

What are your expectations for this season?

We want to push ourselves up the ladder. We finished the minor round in fourth last year and then won our first final before bowing out. We’re eying off a finish in that top three this year so we get the double chance.

Who will be the team to beat, and who could be a dark horse?

Moonta will be the team to beat again and Wallaroo the dark horse, the Bulldogs seem to have recruited well.

Moonta to celebrate 50th anniversary

with Josh Ramsey How has preseason gone?

We have played North Haven in a trial game, and also played in the Australian Champions League carnival on the weekend. Nine of our Adelaide-based players have been training in Adelaide, and at Moonta we have been averaging 28 to 30 players per training. We have been happy with how everything has gone so far, and we thank our sponsors for 2016-17.

After a successful 2016, Moonta Netball Club is looking forward to another competitive season.

“We had a great season with many teams making finals and our B grade brought home a premiership,” president Sue Beech said.

“This year, we started off a bit tight with numbers in seniors but that appears to have sorted itself out.

“Trainings have been going well with great attendances and enthusiasm. There is plenty of strength amongst the junior ranks, with those players looking forward to developing their skills and club spirit.”

The club has been working hard to freshen up the clubrooms with new paint and lighting as its 50th anniversary A grade — Adele Keleher celebration and Kara Madden approaches.

What are your expectations for this season?

We want to try to improve our ability to use the football. Times are suggesting we have improved our fitness again. We are trying to sure up our defence, after that was a big focus for us last year. We had nine first-year players come through last year, and probably six had a taste of A grade footy. Our improvement will come from those lads who are now in their second year, and I’d say four or five of them will be A graders. Our strength is our locals, last year 14 of the players in our premiership team played juniors at Moonta.

Pasky taking a new look on the court

with David Thompson How has preseason gone?

Preseason has been pretty good.

We were behind the eight-ball a little bit because of harvest but the guys are fit. We have had two trial games, against Ardrossan and Solomontown, which were a good challenge for us and let the young blokes get a bit of confidence under their belts.

With months of fitness under their belts and trials held well in advance of the season, Pasky is primed and ready to play.

The club is coming off a very successful 2016 season in which all senior teams and the G grade played finals and the A grade won the premiership on its home ground in front of a large crowd.

“It was a good year on and off the court with lots of fun involved,” spokesperson Fiona Bussenschutt said.

“Hosting the grand final was a highlight, I thought it went off really well and the facilities were good.”

The club has had strong numbers register and attend fitness, trials and trainings.

“Nikki Crickmay has been running fitness and that has been really well attended,” Fiona said.

“Everyone is in good spirits.

“We’re really happy with the coaching panel and we’ve already got plans in place for this year.

“The club has a bonding trip planned for early in the season, plus we’ll be having another Erin Bell clinic and some specialist sessions.

A grade — Fiona Bussenschutt “We’ll also do some theme B grade — Belinda Wood nights for training and have some C grade — Leonie Ey and combined trainings plus have our Sarah Pridham buddy teams again.”

D grade — Lisa Seal Pasky players will be looking F grade — Barb Price smart in new uniforms, which will G grade — Jane Bussenschutt be debuted in round one.

H grade — Belinda Wood “The committee has worked NetSetGO — Hannah Seal hard on this and has a whole range and Jodie Price of new apparel for our supporters and players,” Fiona said.

What are your expectations for this season?

Our goal for the year is to develop the young kids. Every club wants to play finals and that will still be our aim. I would really like to finish in the top three and from there anything can happen. We want to focus on not having to rely on big-name players at the club. If we can get our bottom 10 players up and playing a good standard that will make a big difference.

I’m not really concerned about the team to beat, although all the feedback I’ve been hearing says Moonta will be strong again. Kadina has recruited pretty well and will be a dark horse, and it would be nice for us to be a dark horse as well.

Moonta will be around the mark and hungry after last year. They have good depth, experience, height and speed.

A grade dark horse team and why?

Cougars and Kadina. I think Kadina will improve on last year and they have picked up another couple of players so they’ll have a leader in each

A grade player losses and gains?

Gains: In our A/B squad, we have gained Amanda Carmichael, Hannah Zwar, Belinda Wood and

Lana Farley, Lana Kaesler.

Losses: We have lost Carrie Ramsey, Maddie Zielonka, Katie Koster and Amie Price.

Up and coming junior players at your club and why?

Whilst we don’t have a lot of juniors moving into senior ranks this year, we have some really good depth which we look forward to in the future.

Coach’s comments with Matt Wilkinson How has preseason gone?

Preseason has been going fairly well. We had our first combined session at Port Wakefield in early March with the lads from Adelaide and from home. We had a trial against Golden Grove at Yorketown, which was a good hit-out, and another against Tea Tree Gully, also at Yorketown.

Paskeville won't be the only club debuting new uniforms, as the Eagles will also set to don new dresses this season.

Also new in the club is a training coordinator who will focus on specific ball skills, team plays, match conditioning and fun team bonding.

With the extra focus on having quality trainings, the club will hope to build on the success of last season.

"2016 was very successful, with the C and D grades winning premierships and E grade also playing in the grand final," president Tarina Warren said.

What are your expectations for this season? We want to make finals after finishing sixth last year, we will be focusing on trying to turn around those close ones. There’s a good vibe around the club, we’re very excited about the juniors coming up through the grades.

Coach’s comments with Jamie Yeates How has preseason gone?

We played a trial game against SMOSH at Thebby oval and took 37 players down — that’s 10 more than we had on our books at the same time last year. We drew against a side coming out of division II and it was a good hit-out in 34-degree heat. We also had our twilight trial match against Hope Valley on March 25. The energy at training has been up because of numbers.

What are your expectations for this season?

Our best last year was good enough to be competitive, but when we had a lot of injuries our lack of depth was exposed. This year, we have added some real quality to our side and improved on our deficiencies from last year.

We want to make a charge at the finals, while still looking to blood some lads who have come up through our senior colts.

Who will be the team to beat, and who could be a dark horse?

I think at full strength last year the Cougars were as good as anybody and they still have their nucleus.

Kadina will improve and could be a dark horse after bringing some locals back in Brendan Papps, Josh Willis and the Ellis boys.

Wallaroo Football and Netball Clubs

Fresh start on new Wallaroo courts Wallaroo is looking forward to showing off its new courts and adjoining facilities after lots of hard work during the offseason to have them ready for round one.

“The Wallaroo netball, basketball and tennis clubs have joined together to establish new courts up on the hill next to the Wallaroo football clubrooms,” president Lyndall Neill said.

“The community has been working very hard to ensure the courts are ready for game day. Preseason training this year has included some serious manual labour — erecting fences, digging holes, shifting sand and gravel, et cetera.

“The Wallaroo football and netball clubs have also erected a new joint canteen facility.

“It’s all looking pretty amazing and we are very excited to see everything we have been working towards in action.”

Wallaroo had 42 seniors and 40 juniors register for this season.

“We are pleased to fill all grades with good numbers this year,” Lyndall said.

“We continue to grow in numbers and we endeavour each year to do better than the year before.

“We have a great cohort of girls and have a few more newies out there.

“Whilst we have had good numbers at preseason trainings, the club was devastated by the shocking passing of life member, valued player, umpire, past committee member and all-round legend Steph Flint on February 16.

“The club has united to move forward and from this tragedy Steph’s uniform will still be out on the court as one of our players and life member Sharon Steer has come out of retirement in honour of her dear friend Steph.”

A grade team to beat in 2017 and why?

Paskeville — for obvious reasons. They are last year’s premiers and even though they’ve lost some players I’m sure they’ve managed to recruit more-than-handy replacements.

A grade dark horse team and why?

I have no idea on that one, however, I do believe Wallaroo will be competitive. All the girls have been really enthusiastic at training and are tired of the “easy beats” tag. We have a good mix of experienced, skilful, athletic and versatile players so we are excited for the season to start.

A grade player losses and gains?

Losses: Leanne Cole, Tam Charman.

Gains: Jo Dawkins — a tall goalie who has the netball smarts. Having some height in the circle will be a nice change for Wallaroo. Emma Taylor has come to us from Bute. She trialled well in the mid-court and is settling in and getting used to playing with new team members. Sharon Steer — you can’t buy the experience Sharon will bring to this team. She is a great leader on court and her height and strong rebounding will be an asset in defence.

Georgia Hann returns after two ankle

reconstructions and her competitiveness, skills and accurate shooting haven’t deserted her.

She also has good voice on court which will help in attack.

Up and coming junior players at your club and why?

Rachelle Larwood has worked hard in the offseason and is extremely fit. She has height and is able to play at both ends of the court.

Larissa Wileman is a tall, accurate goalie who played many A grade games last year. She has the potential and will to improve.

Won a Mail Medal in the Adelaide Plains before moving to the peninsula where he was Kadina’s best player in a stacked team. Now he’s hoping to join the Demons premiership party.

3 Joel Palmer, Kadina.

Won the Mail Medal in his debut season last year. Best used in the guts where he can scramble on his hands and knees quicker than Mrs Flanker can say, “Get off me!”

11 Adam Pitt, CMS Crows.

If this bloke is still alive at age 80 just wheel him out onto a wing and let him rack up 30 touches.

4 Jared Redden, Southern Eagles.

12 Sam Lodge, Ardrossan.

He’s done the hard yards on the extremely deep Woodville-West Torrens list without nailing down a senior spot. Played a bit of league and is just entering his prime.

Poor bastard’s knee fell apart before he could have a real crack in the AFL, so he went back to Woodville-West Torrens.

Now he’s home and should instantly be the top ruckman around.

13 Aleksander Kangur,

Led the Magpies to two flags as soon as he rocked up. Thank God he didn’t come any earlier, I don’t think I could have stomached Pasky winning a third.

Has been overseas and the rest of the comp hopes he’s packed on the kilos, but he’ll be fit again by finals. Pure midfield class.

7 Chris Langford,

CY Cougars.

1 Luke Harder, Wallaroo.

HUGE PICK-UP...

Wallaroo recruit Luke Harder, in his Port Adelaide days, should instantly be one of the top players on Yorke Peninsula.

I don’t want to know what the recruiters at Wallaroo did to get this bloke to the club, that is unless you’ve got photos. Captained the state country team last year and is smackbang in his prime.

Finished runner-up in the Mail Medal last year. Could be one of the best key forwards or backmen in the game but will probably play in the middle.

8 Josh Ramsey, Moonta.

Blew last year’s grand final wide open, gobbling up everything that came his way like Mrs Flanker at Christmas dinner.

This lad has been living on the streets all summer long, begging passersby for change. That is how badly he was robbed by the umpires last year when he received about two Mail Medal votes. I wouldn’t be surprised if they made the poor bugger pay for his party pies at the count.

14 Christian Bock, Wallaroo.

His brother Nathan kicked ass for the Crows then fleeced the Gold Coast for a couple of million bucks before retiring. Wallaroo’s hoping the former AFL-listed Christian is half as talented, or at least half as smart.

15 Giles Ellis, Kadina.

Played in an SANFL grand final only two years ago, but couldn’t get a consistent run with the Woodville-West Torrens firsts (sound familiar?). I can’t say a bad word about the lad — especially if I want to keep my job as the YP Country Times tipster.

16 Tyler Andrews, Moonta.

9 Jono Lee, Kadina.

Word out of the Bloodhound bar is he’s dropped 20 kilos and is ready to get back to his damaging best around the ground.

18 Abraham Helfand, Paskeville.

Every year he gets stronger, slimmer and seemingly angrier. Helped lead the Magpies to a couple of flags and will be the key cog in an otherwise depleted side this year.

19 Kieren Smith, CMS Crows.

Hasn’t always set the YPFL on fire but has SANFL experience and blinding pace.

20 Jake Stoll, Moonta.

Probably the best tap ruckman in the game last year and gets around the ground with ease.

5 Tyson Wait, Paskeville.

6 Dylan Mansell, Moonta.

Carrying a whole team is hard, especially on one leg. But young Carey managed it for an entire grand final last year and I think that was just the beginning.

Zippy little bugger and can smell a sausage roll from a mile away. He’s been consistently receiving the most Mail Medal votes of any player under 21 for roughly 10 years.

21 Zack Edwards, Kadina.

Oozes football ability and has secured his financial future through marriage, very smart.

22 Brett Ellis, Wallaroo.

Last was a standout player for — that’s right — the Woodville-West Torrens reserves. That club is providing half this list.

23 Chad Norsworthy, Moonta.

Was brilliant for the Dees last year after dumping Wallaroo like I wish Mrs Flanker dumped me before our wedding day.

24 Brendan Papps, Kadina.

Kicked six goals to help PAC into the div I grand final last year. His team went on to win the flag.

25 Steven Wellington, Ardrossan.

Wellington arrives from Broadview’s division SEVEN. He led his team to a flag but the final score was 29-21. You can’t make this up. So how is this bloke in my top 25? Well, he didn’t belong in div VII. In fact, when not playing against scrubs he was in the Adelaide Crows development squad.
