History Moonta Mines Sweet Shop Verran Terrace, Moonta Mines Located in the old Moonta Mines Post Office, this well-stocked sweet shop features a large variety of old-fashioned drinks and sweets.

A walk through the Moonta Mines heritage site still causes excitement today when, ambling across the red skimps, a green rock flashes up, its unmistakable hue giving evidence of copper ore. Imagine the excitement it caused in the late 19th century when two shepherds stumbled across green rocks, heralding what would become a great mining dynasty on Yorke Peninsula.

By the middle of the year, 150 miners were employed and the Wallaroo Mining Company was formed. By the mid-1860s the mine was producing 26,000 tonne of ore and, at its zenith between 1870 and 1875, it employed 1000 men and boys.

Moonta Mines

The mining towns of Moonta, Kadina and Wallaroo – now known as the Copper Coast – benefited the most from this mining boom.

Perhaps it was the luck of the Irish, because Patrick "Paddy" Ryan discovered traces of copper on a pastoral lease of W. W. Hughes in May 1861. A syndicate was formed and members travelled with Ryan to Moonta to see the precise site.

Wallaroo Mines

When Hughes heard of the discovery he lodged a claim in the name of a dummy, which was rejected, so he returned to Moonta with a surveyor and met Ryan, who showed him where he had found the copper. The survey information had to be taken to John Taylor. Hughes asked William Horn if he could get to Adelaide by 9am the next day.

Copper was first discovered by shepherd James Boor on the pastoral lease of Walter Watson Hughes and his brother-in-law John Duncan. They located copper six miles southwest of the sheep run station called Wallaroo on December 17, 1859. Boor discovered green-coloured stones, likely unearthed by a wombat. He pocketed the stones, forgetting them for a few days before informing Duncan of what he had found. Hughes then secured mineral leases, which he named the Wallaroo Mine after his sheep station.

Horn rode nonstop for 22 hours, covering 164 miles and exhausting eight horses. Taylor and the rival syndicate were both present when the Lands Department opened, but Taylor received first attention and secured the leases.

Four Burra miners were hired by Hughes and started mining at Home Shaft in February 1860.

A legal battle went to the Privy Council, but Hughes settled out of court. He then formed the

6

Copper Coast Lifestyle Location of Choice

Tipara Mining Association – later the Moonta Mining Co – and started operations in late 1861. Almost 5000 tonne of ore was produced in the first year. Under the management of mine captain H. R. Hancock the project developed rapidly and by 1865 about 1200 men and boys were employed. By 1870, more than 5000 people were dependent on the mine, which was producing 20,000 tonne of dressed ore, averaging 20 per cent copper. By 1876, Moonta was the first mining company in Australia to pay £1 million in dividends. It employed 1700 people. When Moonta and Wallaroo companies amalgamated in 1890, ore worth £5.6million had been mined. The new company employed an average of 1900 people during its 33 years of operation with employment reaching 2700 in 1906.

Smelting The ore needed to be smelted. So, in 1860, the township of Wallaroo was surveyed and the foreshore sold as water allotments to the Wallaroo Mining Company for the establishment of a smelting works. The smelters operated until 1923 and this was at one time the largest smelting works in the world apart from Swansea in Wales.

Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre – The Farm Shed 50 Mines Road, Kadina Opened in 2002, the nationally-accredited, award-winning Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre is located within the tourism centre. The centre prides itself on offering quality souvenirs, locally-made produce, a range of local history books and South Australian regional visitor guides. Enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate from the coffee machine and sit back while planning your next move. The information centre offers free bicycle and geocache kit hire.

The museum brings together some of the fascinating developments and practices of dryland farming. Exhibits show the hardships endured on the land, detailing the process of land clearing, reliving the vital role of animals on farms and exploring the transition from horse to tractor-powered farming. A collection of varied farming machinery is complemented by Kadina history themes. The Wallaroo Mine, where the copper mining started, was within sight of Matta House, the historical residence which forms part of the museum. Matta House evokes the mining era. Following on you will find displays including: Kadina's Story; Life at the Wallaroo Mines; They Served, about local service men and women; The Local Newspaper, with giant printing presses; a 1950s rural schoolroom from Kulpara; Her Side of the Story, about women's roles on the farm; Farmyard, highlighting children's roles on the farm.

Is there a better way to explore the Copper Coast, and discovering hidden treasures, than cycling around the area using a hand-held GPS unit? This activity is free fun for the entire family.

The farming story starts with a look at many aspects of life for farming families. Interpretive displays follow the process from clearing the scrub to sowing the grain.

Miner’s Cottage and Garden

Moonta Mines Tourist Railway Verran Terrace, Moonta Mines A trip on the hugely popular, award-winning tourist train leaves from the Wheal Munta station located in the car park of the Moonta Mines Museum. It takes passengers on an entertaining 50-minute guided tour through the historic landmarks of former mining operations. The drivers bring to life the history of the region by telling the stories of the discovery of copper, the workings of the mines and ore sorting floors, reservoir and the tunnel through Ryan's tailing heap, as well as other interesting tales.

Hughes Engine House

Verran Terrace, Moonta Mines

It was built from 1863 to 1865 and was a significant contributor to the success of the Moonta Mining Company, its function being to pump water from the underground workings on the largest ore bodies. The Cornish beam pumping engine pumped water from the adjacent shaft at a depth of 366 metres and from Taylor's Shaft 300 metres to the north at a depth of 768 metres until the mine closed in 1923.

Verco Street, Moonta Mines

Richman's tailing heap

Opened by the National Trust as a museum on October 9, 1967, the cottage is preserved for the present and future generations so they may appreciate the way Cornish families existed in the area without reticulated water or electricity.

A superb view of the surrounding district can be seen from the top of the 20-metre-high tailing heap at Moonta Mines.

Step back in time and see the way the pioneers of the area lived. The cottage and its magnificent garden are lovingly tended by a group of enthusiastic volunteers.

Moonta Mines Sweet Shop Verran Terrace, Moonta Mines Many consider the number one place to visit in the Copper Coast to be the Moonta Mines Sweet Shop. Located in the old Moonta Mines Post Office, this well-stocked sweet shop features a large variety of old-fashioned drinks and sweets.

Moonta Mines (follow signs from Verran Terrace)

Richman's Engine House Moonta Mines (follow signs from Verran Terrace) This engine house was designed and erected by Frederick May in 1869 and was constructed using stone from local Moonta Bay beaches. The main purpose of the engine house was for hauling, pumping and crushing and it was continually used to process and concentrate the ore until the mines closed in 1923.

There is an interesting collection of the equipment belonging to many of the lodges and guilds of old Moonta, as well as a refurbished school classroom.

There are interesting displays and collections to see, including an extensive medical display, working mine models and many old photographs.

our jetties Moonta Bay The long L-shaped jetty is well worth the visit when you are at Moonta Bay. Upgraded in 2012, the jetty provides a perfect spot for recreational fishing. The catch of the day may include Australian herring (tommy ruff), garfish and squid, especially towards the late afternoon and evening when the tide is on the way in. There is a recently-upgraded swimming enclosure which can be accessed via the jetty. The Moonta Bay beach is located directly in front of the Moonta Bay Caravan Park, and is a lovely sandy beach suitable for all ages. When the tide goes out there is plenty of beach to play on and shallow rock pools to explore. On the south side of the Moonta Bay jetty the white, sandy beach extends all the way to Port Hughes.

Its shipping terminal caters for international grain needs and there are ample places to eat, sleep and shop, including the new Wallaroo Shopping Centre. Wallaroo has a long history. Wallaroo beaches Wallaroo has a number of beaches including Office Beach, North Beach and Sailing Club Beach. These beaches are great for swimming. North Beach is still one of the few beaches in South Australia on which a vehicle can be driven. Wallaroo is also popular for scuba divers and snorkelers, and for those looking for the ultimate day's fishing, various charters are available.

Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum Jetty Road, Wallaroo This fascinating museum is in the town's first post office, built in 1865, and provides an important insight into the early activities of this historic port. The museum consists of three large buildings full of displays highlighting Wallaroo's unique heritage. The extensive displays cover the copper smelting era (1861-1923), maritime, shipwrecks, railways, postal and telephone history, local religious life, civic affairs, entertainment, sport, the war years and general local history. The days of sail are illustrated in the large nautical section where visitors can follow the close links the area had with copper mining and smelting, agriculture and the sea. The history of the port of Wallaroo is depicted with more than 70 large ship models, photographs, documents, relics and old record books. An intriguing exhibit is George the giant squid, found inside the stomach of a whale caught off Albany, Western Australia, many years ago. Visit www.wallaroocommunity.org.

These small but vibrant townships are located within the District Council of Barunga West. Port Broughton was surveyed in 1871 to service the surrounding wheat and barley growers on the recommendation of Captain Henry Dale. Aside from farming, commercial fishing is an important part of the local economy, with scalefish and blue swimmer crabs accounting for much of the catch. Like many towns on Yorke Peninsula, Port Broughton is a prime tourist destination with activities such as fishing, crabbing and a variety of water sports being popular.

Clements Gap Conservation Park Clements Road, Clements Gap Drive 15 minutes north of Port Broughton and you will arrive at the largely undisturbed 11 square kilometres of South Australian remnant bushland. The only remaining building at Clements Gap is the Uniting Church. The church is still used for monthly services and weddings.
