First cruise ship docks in For the first time, a cruise ship has docked in Wallaroo.

Valley will be visited too, and we also expect locals from there to come and check out the cruise ship while it is in port.”

The Vasco da Gama brought 1200 passengers and 600 crew to the region on December 7, 2019, and will return on December 18, 2019, and January 3 and December 16, 2020. Not only are the cruise ship visits a great boost for the local economy but also a chance to showcase the region and for locals to interact with intrastate, interstate and international visitors. “This is a big deal for our region with increased economic activity, retail spend and demand for tourism experiences,” Copper Coast Council Tourism Coordinator Lynn Spurling said. “We are so excited to showcase our region and what we have to offer. Our neighbouring regions of Yorke Peninsula and the Clare

Passengers can book tourism experiences onboard the cruise ship including a historical Wallaroo walking tour and museum visit, the Moonta Mines and train experience, the Yorke Peninsula Tasting Trail, or a trip to Kadina to see The Farm Shed Museum and Camelot Gardens. Buses will also transport passengers to the Clare Valley for winery and colonial tours. “each of the tours has a point of difference,” Mrs Spurling said. “Our region is rich with heritage including mining, farming and smelting history. People can also enjoy experiences like pasty making. “even if the visitors simply want to peruse our towns, we are providing hop-on, hop-off buses which will be running regularly and stopping at the Wallaroo, Moonta and Kadina town halls.”

Local experiences for passengers

Cruise ships great for tourism South Australian Tourism Commission chief executive Rodney harrex said the summer cruise ship season will bring 23 different cruise ships into the state. “It is particularly exciting for the Clare Valley and coastal communities surrounding Wallaroo, which can expect three cruise ship visits, and it is great to see the community has responded by organising onshore excursion programs to showcase the region, along with the council offering a shuttle bus connecting the Copper Coast townships of Wallaroo, Kadina and Moonta,” he said. Mrs Spurling said it is hoped visitors who get a taste of the Copper Coast during their cruise ship call will one day return. “Research has shown 33 per cent of people revisit the region within the next two years for an extended stay,” she said. “We know our region is beautiful but now we can share it with other people too which is good for everyone.”

ALL ABOARD... Vasco da Gama was the first cruise ship to dock at Wallaroo when it visited on December 7, 2019. It will be returning to the region on December 18, 2019, and January 3 and December 16, 2020.

Copper Coast goes online For the first time, the Copper Coast region has its own website. “We have previously promoted tourism attractions and activities through the council website but we decided it was time people could access that information in a tourismspecific platform,” Copper Coast Council Tourism Coordinator Lynn Spurling said. “We are very excited about our new website — it is one of the first of its kind to be released in Australia as it has been built using the latest Progressive Web App technology. “This means it is both an app and a mobile responsive website in one, so users can download the website to their home screen and access the information on the app at any time, even if there is no internet connectivity.” The new website is colourful, creative and informative. The home screen features captivating drone footage and stunning imagery of the region, with a longer version also available on YouTube and Facebook. The video content was captured and edited by South Australia’s elliot Grafton, a talented young digital creator. “We wanted a highlight reel that showcases our wonderful region, with glimpses of the many experiences on offer,” Mrs Spurling said. “The video is part of our mission to get visitors and locals to explore more of what is on offer here in the Copper Coast.” The website is also linked to the Australian

Tourism Data Warehouse so it is essential local tourism operators are listed there as that information will automatically transfer to the Copper Coast website. This includes any upcoming events. “The website features an interactive map which has pins dropped at all local attractions, cafes, restaurants, accommodation providers, et cetera,” Mrs Spurling said. “We also have a section targeted at the cruise ship visitors where they can book tours and experiences online.” Mrs Spurling said having a strong digital presence was imperative in this day and age. “It’s the way the world works now, visitors plan their stay online prior to being in the region,” she said. “Our geographical location means that people aren’t going to chance upon us, they need to make a choice about coming here. “That’s why it is so important we market ourselves and provide easily accessible information about what the Copper Coast has to offer. “We know how wonderful it is, but we want everyone to know.” Mrs Spurling said the website works handin-hand with other promotional activities. “People look for that face-to-face contact or tangible information resource, such as the visitors’ guide, once they arrive,” she said. “We also have a new Instagram account and Facebook page to complement the website.” Check out the website at visitcoppercoast.com.au and on socials at Visit Copper Coast.

Milestone year for Kadina Show SPECIAL DAY... Kadina AH&F Show Society president Maxine Tully is gearing up for the 150th Kadina Show this year, Saturday and Sunday, August 15-16.

Copper Coast Lifestyle Location of Choice

This year’s Kadina Show has been 150 years in the making. THE annual event is marking its milestone with another family fun celebration of all things agricultural, horticultural and floricultural on Saturday and Sunday, August 15-16. Kadina AH&F Show Society president Maxine Tully and her capable team of volunteers are well into planning the two days of action. “We’ve booked the SA Police Band, there will be a display of vintage and veteran cars, and we’ve been working hard on a guest speaker to open the day,” Mrs Tully said. “The first show was set up as a way to foster interest in the area and draw together the community of the local district. “That’s still the case today, the show is an important part of community life and showcases agricultural, horticulture and floricultural products. “We want to see that continue and even create experiences for those, particularly children, who don’t necessarily see where their food comes from.” The show’s location changed over the years, from a site between Kadina and Wallaroo to Wandilta Flat and Julia Terrace until organisers settled on its current position in 1883. Mrs Tully has been combing through old papers and records to compile a history book, which will be launched during the 150th celebrations. “We had such great feedback this year about the Grazers and Growers area, and that will be coming back again,” she said. “There’s a strong history of local clubs and businesses having stalls to show their products, and we’d love to hear from any groups who are keen to be part of it.” The showgrounds’ iconic heritage gates were back up in 2019 after having been damaged in a storm, and the show society plans to continue beautifying the entrance. “The area will be paved, with the names of donors as well as all show society presidents and life members,” Mrs Tully said. “It’ll be a great addition and we look forward to helping the show society grow into the future. “We’ve also created a fundraising calendar which is available from various tourism information centres and Wallaroo Treasures and Treats.”

Experience the new-look Kadina town centre

Kadina is the shopping and services hub of the Copper Coast, and indeed the whole Yorke Peninsula, and that shopping experience has never been better. The Kadina hub has undergone a major revamp with fresh road pavement and a massive new carpark just the start. The town centre is also ideally suited to pedestrians of all ages with wide footpaths and ample crossings. Shoppers will notice a bright and vibrant new look with uniform pavers, new

verandahs, street furniture and plantings. It took almost seven years for Kadina businesses and Copper Coast Council to develop and execute the revamp, including professional concept designs, community consultation and trials. Construction started in 2016 and included extensive stormwater improvements as well as the 400-odd new car parks on Frances Terrace, all within easy walking distance of Kadina hub businesses. Roadworks including raising some roads, installing a new roundabout at a previouslytroublesome intersection, resealing bitumen, paving and erecting the verandahs started in 2017. Old issues such as dangerously-raised kerbs, a lack of traffic-calming measures and ageing infrastructure had caused Kadina’s central business district to look dated and created issues, particularly for the elderly and those with disabilities.

Those problems are all things of the past and the businesses, which have weathered the construction works, now look forward to welcoming shoppers back to the new and improved Kadina hub. Member for Narungga Fraser ellis officially cut the ribbon on what he described as an “unprecedented” development, which received more than $3million in government grants, in September 2019. “The aim of revitalising the Copper Coast’s largest town centre is to make it safer and more user friendly for locals, more attractive for tourists and ultimately more attractive for shoppers in support of Kadina business owners,” Mr ellis said. “What’s ahead now is watching the trees grow and, very importantly, getting behind our local businesses so we can make the most of this significant investment and see them prosper after some tough times they’ve had throughout the building process.”

Creating a memorial to those lost at sea A memorial to the men and women who have lost their lives in the waters off Moonta Bay and Port Hughes now stands tall on the Port Hughes foreshore. CONStRuCtiON on the monument, which is two metres high and features a 3m by 1.2m silhouette of a fishing vessel, was completed last year. “it’s been a long time in the making,” terry Logan said. “i had the idea many years ago after i saw similar memorials in Robe and Fremantle. “i spoke to Adrian Hatcher, who was a councillor with the Copper Coast Council at the time, and he suggested we wait until the redevelopment of the boat ramp at Port Hughes.” Mr Logan partnered up with the Friends of Port Hughes, forming a subcommittee with Maggie Dawkins and Bob Helmers, and last year wrote to council outlining his hopes.

“they told me they liked it, that i should work on plans, designs and costs and figure out where it would go,” Mr Logan said. “We decided on the grassed area at Port Hughes because it’s a nice place to sit and reflect.” the group raised $12,000 for the project through donations from service clubs, hotel social groups, businesses and individuals. “the generosity of the community has been invaluable, as well as money, we’ve also received in-kind donations and materials,” Mr Logan said. “Graham Curtis is a local stone mason, he helped with designing the structure and has built it, Lyall Stubing has also been a great help as have Zane Gummow, Dave Steele and Wendy Williams from Moonta Area School. “the support we’ve received from the Copper Coast Council, from Wade Della torre and Muller Mentz and their staff has been immense. “Everything we’ve done has taken time, from sourcing the materials to researching the names.” All the information about those lost will be compiled in a book, which will be available at the Port Hughes General Store and local visitor information centres.

Putt Putt course a hit The region’s newest attraction, Copper Coast Putt Putt, is in full swing and already proving popular. The challenging 18-hole course boasts an array of eye-catching Copper Coast-themed holes, including a jetty and a smelter, many individually sponsored by local businesses. Officially opened by Copper Coast Council Mayor Roslyn Talbot and Member for Narungga Fraser ellis in September 2019, the course exceeded expectations with 2162 people playing a round in the first two weeks. Copper Coast Council Tourism and events Officer Chloe Barrett said the course was constructed as part of a successful Fund My Neighbourhood Grant. “Copper Coast Putt Putt is a new, affordable, bright and fun attraction for the region which visitors and locals of all ages can enjoy,” she said. “The course is located at the front of the Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre which also hosts a range of activities — the Indoor Play Centre, The Farm Shed Museum and Copper Coast Miniature Railways. “There is also a lovely lawn area perfect for picnics and other outdoor activities, so families can really make a day of it.” Member for Narungga Fraser ellis said the course had been an instant hit. “Many locals and visitors who grace our shores are always looking for fun things to do, particularly on bad beach days,” he said. “It completes a fun, must-visit tourist precinct which can only boost visitor numbers and provide a positive experience for our tourists to take away with them, and tell their friends about.” The Copper Coast Putt Putt course is located at 50 Mines Road, Kadina, in front of the Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre. It is open from 10am-4pm daily and costs just $5 per game.

Hughes Enginehouse, built in 1865, housed a Cornish beam pumping engine, which operated pumps in Hughes’ and Taylor's shafts to allow the mining of the main ore body below natural water levels.

Hughes Enginehouse

Discover our local history All of the wonderful attractions you will find on Yorke Peninsula’s Copper Coast can be traced back to the moment copper was discovered in the region.

Hughes then secured mineral leases, which he named the Wallaroo Mine after his sheep station. He hired four Burra miners and started mining at Home Shaft in February 1860. By the middle of the year, 150 miners were employed and the Wallaroo Mining Company was formed. By the mid-1860s, the mine was producing 26,000 ton of ore and, at its zenith between 1870 and 1875, it employed 1000 men and boys.

THE mining boom that resulted led to rapid growth in the region, while also providing a vital boost to the state’s economy. Today, much of that mining history has been lovingly preserved, and the Moonta Mines site takes pride of place on the National Heritage register.

Patrick “Paddy” Ryan discovered traces of copper on a pastoral lease of W. W. Hughes in May 1861. A syndicate was formed and members travelled with Ryan to Moonta to see the precise site. When Hughes heard of the discovery he lodged a claim in the name of a dummy, which was rejected, so he returned to Moonta with a surveyor and met Ryan, who showed him where he had found the copper. The survey information had to be taken to John Taylor. Hughes asked William Horn if he could get to Adelaide by 9am the next day. Horn rode nonstop for 22 hours, covering 164 miles and exhausting eight horses. Taylor and the rival syndicate were both present when the Lands Department opened, but Taylor received first attention and secured the leases. A legal battle went to the Privy Council, but

Wallaroo Mines Copper was first discovered by shepherd James Boor on the pastoral lease of Walter Watson Hughes and his brother-in-law John Duncan. They located copper six miles southwest of the sheep run station called Wallaroo on December 17, 1859. Boor discovered green-coloured stones, which had likely been unearthed by a wombat. He pocketed the stones, forgetting them for a few days before informing Duncan about what he had found.

Moonta Mines

Hughes settled out of court. He then formed the Tipara Mining Association — later the Moonta Mining Co — and started operations in late 1861. Almost 5000 ton of ore was produced in the first year. Under the management of mine captain H. R. Hancock the project developed rapidly and by 1865 about 1200 men and boys were employed. By 1870, more than 5000 people were dependent on the mine, which was producing 20,000 ton of dressed ore, averaging 20 per cent copper. By 1876, Moonta was the first mining company in Australia to pay one million pounds in dividends. It employed 1700 people. When Moonta and Wallaroo companies amalgamated in 1890, ore worth 5.6million pounds had been mined. The new company employed an average of 1900 people during its 33 years of operation with employment reaching 2700 in 1906.

Smelting The ore needed to be smelted. So, in 1860, the township of Wallaroo was surveyed and the foreshore sold as water allotments to the Wallaroo Mining Company for the establishment of a smelting works. The smelters operated until 1923 and were at one time the largest smelting works in the world apart from Swansea in Wales.

The Ray Robinson Memorial Military Museum, which displays an impressive collection of World War I, World War II and Vietnam War military memorabilia, reflects the centre’s dedication to all those who served in any conflict, anywhere in the world. The collection is being added to continuously through the centre’s restoration workshop, donations and permanent loans. Address: Copper Coast Highway, Kadina (2km from Kadina toward Wallaroo).

The Farm Shed Museum The museum brings together some of the fascinating developments and practices of dryland farming. Exhibits show the hardships endured on the land, detailing the process of land clearing, reliving the vital role of animals on farms and exploring the transition from horse to tractor-powered farming. A collection of varied farming machinery is complemented by Kadina history themes. The Wallaroo mine, where copper mining started, was within sight of Matta House, the historical residence which forms part of the museum. Matta House evokes the mining era. Other displays include Life at Wallaroo Mines; They Served, about local service men and women; The Local Newspaper, with giant printing presses; a 1950s rural schoolroom from Kulpara; Her Side of the Story, about women’s roles on the farm; and Farmyard, highlighting children’s roles on the farm. The farming story starts with a look at many aspects of life for farming families. Interpretive displays follow the process from clearing the scrub to sowing the grain and the progress towards broadacre cereal farming which sustains Yorke Peninsula. Don’t miss the display Sowing the Seed, the harvesting machinery shed, and the vintage tractor and vehicle collection. You will leave with renewed appreciation of how far the Copper Coast has come, and of the tremendous volunteer effort which has gone into creating such high-standard displays. Address: Copper Coast Tourism Centre 50 Mines Road, Kadina.

Moonta, Moonta Mines and Moonta Bay

Moonta Main Street

Moonta was home to more than 10,000 people during its mining heyday in 1870, the second highest population in the state behind the capital city of Adelaide. Today, many of the iconic Moonta Mines structures still exist, protected by Sa and National Heritage listing. It’s a must see, but the area offers far more than just its history. Moonta, Moonta Bay and Port Hughes are home to sweeping white beaches, new boat-launching facilities for fishers, the shady Queen Square with its new wombat statues, a bustling central business district

and numerous acclaimed eateries, to name just a few attractions. Sea-changing retirees, beach-loving families, anglers and people from all walks of life make up the many holidaymakers who often become regular visitors or even permanent residents.

Horse-drawn Tram Visitors can view this restored horse-drawn tram through a viewing window at the Moonta Mines Tourist Railway platform. This is located in the car park of the Moonta Mines Museum. Address: Verran Terrace, Moonta Mines.

Hughes Enginehouse Hughes Enginehouse is one of Moonta’s iconic buildings and features prominently in almost all Moonta promotional material. It was built from 1863 to 1865 and was a significant contributor to the success of the Moonta Mining Company, its function being

to pump water from the underground workings on the largest ore bodies. The Cornish-beam pumping engine pumped water from the adjacent shaft at a depth of 366 metres, and from Taylor’s Shaft 300m to the north at a depth of 768m, until the mine closed in 1923. Address: Moonta Mines (follow signs from Verran Terrace).

Moonta Country Markets Crowds flock to the Moonta Country Markets in Queen Square. Stallholders sell crafts, toys, collectables, jewellery, books, produce and bric-a-brac. There is plenty of food and drinks available, including baked goods and homemade produce. Road tram rides are available around the town. The 2020 markets will be held on Sundays March 8 and october 4. Address: Queen Square, Moonta.

Moonta Bay Jetty The long L-shaped jetty is well worth the visit when you are at Moonta Bay. Upgraded in 2012, the jetty provides a perfect spot for recreational fishing. The catch of the day may include Australian herring (tommy ruff), garfish and squid, especially towards the late afternoon and evening when the tide is on the way in. There is a recently-upgraded swimming enclosure which can be accessed via the jetty. The Moonta Bay beach is located directly in front of the Moonta Bay Caravan Park, and is a lovely sandy beach suitable for all ages. When the tide goes out there is plenty of beach to play on and shallow rock pools to explore. On the south side of the Moonta Bay jetty the white, sandy beach extends all the way to Port Hughes.

Splash Town Water Park

Located at Moonta Bay near the jetty and safe swimming enclosure is Splash Town Water Park. On offer is free entry to a whole lot of fun — racer slides, water mushrooms and wading pools. Changing and toilet facilities are available on site. Splash Town is open October to April. For Splash Town opening days and hours, contact the Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre on 8821 2333, or visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/splashtowncoppercoast

Miners Cottage and Garden Opened by the National Trust as a museum on October 9, 1967, the cottage is preserved for the present and future generations so they may appreciate the way Cornish families lived in the area without reticulated water or electricity. Step back in time and see the way the pioneers of the area lived. The cottage and its magnificent garden are lovingly tended by a group of enthusiastic volunteers. Address: Verco Street, Moonta Mines.

Moonta Gallery of the Arts Moonta Gallery of the Arts is all about keeping the arts alive. The gallery has a different exhibition each month with most exhibitions having their own opening events. Exhibitions range from local to internationally-renowned artists with a range of themes and styles. Contact the gallery for information about upcoming opening nights and exhibitions. Most artwork is for sale. Address: Moonta Town Hall, George Street, Moonta.

Moonta Mines Museum Moonta Mines Museum is in the former Moonta Mines Model School which once enrolled almost 1250 pupils. Wallaroo Wallaroo beaches

North Beach, Wallaroo

Wallaroo is the largest seaside town in the Copper Coast, allowing you to drive straight onto a magnificent beach, step out of the car and feel the sand between your toes. WAllArOO features popular spots to eat, stay and shop, including the Wallaroo Shopping Centre. Its shipping terminal caters for international grain needs and shares the picturesque foreshore with ideal spots to fish, swim or just relax. Wallaroo was once the second busiest port in South Australia, mainly due to mining and smelting. Many historic buildings of that time are still preserved. There is plenty of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets ranging from inexpensive stays to tourist parks, group accommodation, luxury apartments and holiday rentals. People visit for the boating, fishing, coastline, walking trails and all the things that

30

make a seaside resort, but also the history and association with the past. One new attraction is a mural at the old railway station, near the fantastic Wallaroo Adventure Playground. Don’t forget the sunsets — Wallaroo frequently turns on quite a display.

Rotary Copper Trail walking/cycling track The rotary Copper Trail between Wallaroo and Kadina allows people to walk, run, cycle or use their mobility aids without having to negotiate vehicular traffic. The track starts with the Wallaroo Avenue of Honour which recognises those who lost their lives in war, located near the Wallaroo Town Hall.

Wallaroo has a number of beaches including Office Beach, North Beach and Sailing Club Beach. All are great for swimming. North Beach is one of the few beaches in South Australia on which a vehicle can still be driven. Wallaroo is also popular for scuba divers and snorkelers. For those looking for the ultimate day’s fishing, Wallaroo is an ideal destination.

It then stretches along the original railway line to Kadina with informative signs, shelter stops and sights along the way.

Drakes Supermarkets’ Copper Coast New Year’s Eve Celebrations Chatfield Terrace at Wallaroo comes alive every New Year’s Eve, when families can enjoy a variety of sideshows and amusements, and plenty of great carnival food. The whole family will love the spectacular fireworks displays which can be viewed at 9.30pm and again at midnight to bring in the New Year. The New Year’s Eve Celebration is an alcohol-free event. Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum

Wallaroo Sailing Club beach has become a popular spot due to its enclosed nature and soft white sand. Sailors, kayakers and the like can launch straight from the beach.

This fascinating museum is in the town’s first post office, built in 1865, and provides an important insight into the early activities of this historic port. The museum consists of displays highlighting Wallaroo’s unique heritage. The extensive displays cover the copper smelting era (1861-1923), maritime, shipwrecks, railways, postal and telephone history, local religious life, civic affairs, entertainment, sport, the war years and general local history. The days of sail are illustrated in the large nautical section where visitors can follow the close links the area had with copper mining and smelting, agriculture and the sea. The history of the port of Wallaroo is depicted with more than 70 large ship models, photographs, documents, relics and old record books. An intriguing exhibit is George the giant squid, found inside the stomach of a whale caught off Albany, Western Australia, many years ago. Address: Jetty Road, Wallaroo.

Wallaroo Information Outlet For visitor information, visit the Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum. Phone 8823 3015. Address: Jetty Road, Wallaroo.
