GRAND OPENING Indoor courts the new home of Kadina Netball Club HE new indoor courts at the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre have become home of Kadina Netball Club. The club’s 90-plus members have been enjoying using the facility, training on the courts every week and hosting home matches. “The club has been fortunate enough to have it passed through the YP Netball Association to be able to use the indoor courts as our ‘home ground’; therefore, we train and play inside each week,” president Carolyn Neumann said. “The biggest benefit by far with using the indoor courts is dodging the bad weather! “There have been several Thursdays and Saturdays that haven’t been the most pleasant of days, and it has been really nice to have the comfort of being dry and warm, and I know the opposition have also been very thankful for this.” Kadina Netball Club has been proud to show off the facility to other clubs. “The sprung floors are amazing to play on, and certainly make the game a lot faster,” Carolyn said. “Amanda and the staff at CCSLC have been fantastic to deal with, and nothing is

ever too much trouble.” Kadina Netball Club also successfully applied to host Premier League and reserves netball matches at the centre in June; this was a first for Yorke Peninsula. “An annual regional match is held at one venue across the state each year,” Carolyn said. “KNC put in a submission to Netball SA requesting the match be played at the new stadium and we were successful. “More than 300 spectators attended the games between Oakdale and Tango netball clubs, which was a fantastic fundraiser for the club and allowed us to showcase this amazing facility to the wider community.” Manager Amanda Carmichael said the centre also hosted a preseason Carnival Cup in March. This attracted teams from Eyre Peninsula, Northern Districts, Gawler and Tango Netball Club. “Both of these events have been great not only for the centre but the wider community with many players and spectators staying in the region for at least one night and spending their money at local businesses,” she said.

HE Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre is an investment in student education, from hosting major school events to daily lessons, Kadina Memorial School principal Alistair Williams said. Kadina Memorial invested $500,000 towards the redevelopment, with the Department for Education (formerly DECD) contributing another $1.5million. Mr Williams said with almost 1200 students Kadina Memorial outgrew the former centre with the new multipurpose venue becoming a valuable community asset. “The close location of the CCSLC to Kadina Memorial provided a perfect opportunity for the school, council and community to work together to develop a centre to meet our needs and those of the wider community, he said. The school uses the CCSLC almost daily for physical education lessons providing an undercover classroom regardless of the weather. “While the stadium may be used for a basketball, netball or soccer game, it is easily transformed into an assembly hall for our students and families, Mr Williams said.
T
“We’ve enjoyed showcasing student achievements, from concerts and the performing arts, as well as prize presentations, sporting house and student council inductions. More recently, Kadina Memorial hosted a Regional Disability Soccer Carnival in the stadium, a year 11 Australian Business Week expo in the function room, disability swimming, as well as accessing the venue for specific student seminars. Mr Williams paid tribute to former Kadina Memorial School principal Dean Angus who was pivotal to ensuring the school’s long-term educational needs were considered throughout the planning stage. “Our students are fortunate to have a quality learning space at the CCSLC thanks to the many years of lobbying, planning, designing and ultimately building, he said. “This type of development doesn’t just happen and we truly appreciate the financial investment from all stakeholders who continue to work in partnership with the school. “We look forward to years of daily PE lessons, fine-tuning our skills, and hosting many school events for generations to come.

GRAND OPENING New courts a long time coming Y ORKE Valley Basketball Association has had ideas about growing its facility for close to two decades. The official opening of the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre, complete with three new indoor courts and a stunning show court, marks the completion of that vision. "When Dr Graham Morris was president about 15 years ago a set of plans to extend the complex all the way to the roadway, much like where it is now, was worked on," YVBA president Michael Newton said. "That was the first time I'd seen plans but then it dropped away. "Richard Fuller had new plans done when he was president and things went a bit further." The current space grew from discussions between Mr Newton and Copper Coast Council CEO Peter Harder about three to four years ago. "At the time, the Hi-Fert building on Kennett Street, Kadina, was for sale and I thought it could be developed
into a new sports complex," Mr Newton said. "I approached Peter about it and it turned out they were starting to look at plans for the CCSLC." The association has supported the development from its inception – helping to fund a feasibility study and joining the initial committee as well as working with other community groups and service clubs to gain both financial and written support. Works were completed just in time for the start of the 2017-18 season and met with a positive response from players and supporters. "There are few things we need to change for the next season, just upgrading the software for the scoreboards, getting some 24-second clocks and we are still developing how to use the superscreen which we paid for," Mr Newton said. "A couple of the scoreboards need shifting as well, just so they are in a better place but we needed to see how it worked to start with.
"Having the ability to play most games inside has been a huge benefit, especially when the temperature reaches 45 degrees as we can still play." The association will now seek opportunities to host junior tournaments and attract elite level games. This wouldn't be possible without the FIBA-approved sprung flooring installed by Wally Fahey, from Stadium Sports Surfaces. Mr Fahey and his team took about eight weeks to install the 4000 square metres of flooring. "We're really proud of how it's come up, it looks really good and it makes a huge difference to athletes," he said. "The previous flooring was basically like running on concrete, this takes the pressure off knees and ankles. "It opens up so many doors for them, in terms of hosting Basketball SA and other high level events. "We are certainly very happy with our involvement in this project."
We are very proud to have installed the stadium courts for the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre. Congratulations on your grand opening.

GRAND OPENING Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre –– a history ONSTRUCTION of the Kadina and District Recreation Centre started with a vision driven by the Kadina community in the 1970s. Through much of the same hard work involved with the current redevelopment, a sporting hub was built and opened on December 19, 1976. It was named the Kadina and District Recreation Centre and officially opened by the Minister of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Tom Casey, Senator Harold Young representing the Commonwealth Government, and Kadina mayor John Olsen. The community recreation hub had arrived! "After serving the community for 40 years, the original facility was tired and in need of major maintenance to meet current safety and building codes together with community standards and expectations," Copper Coast Council mayor Paul Thomas said. "The Copper Coast literally faced the loss of this 40-year-old community recreation hub." Copper Coast Council, in consultation with its community, made the decision to investigate design possibilities for a new, improved facility that would be able to accommodate the growing community in the long term. "The focus for the new hub was to provide a community space that would offer improved health and wellbeing in a growing population balanced with economic development for the community and wider Yorke Peninsula region," Mr Thomas said.
C
Past Kadina mayor John Olsen pushed for the construction of the Kadina and District Recreation Centre in the 1970s whilst current Copper Coast Council mayor Paul Thomas has been integral to the redevelopment of the facility, now called the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre.

"The initial phase was to scope a project that would be affordable for our community. "After much hard work and perseverance, thousands of pages of plans and grant applications, the project goal was within reach." A total budget of $10.3million was finalised with a combined $7.8million of grant funding through federal and state government departments, Kadina Memorial School, local clubs, businesses, individuals and the sale of community unmade roads. The dream became a reality. In June 2016, a contract with builder Unique Urban Built was signed. That month, the first sod was turned by Mr Thomas and federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey, then construction began. "The new facility comprising the program pool, show court, extra indoor and squash courts, gymnasium, upgraded outdoor courts, playground, car park, café, créche, changerooms, meeting and conference rooms and community spaces is being well utilised," Mr Thomas said. "The facility has already hosted major regional events but this is only the very beginning. "There is flexibility, scope and diversity for the entire community locally, and beyond. "If you haven't had the chance to see this fantastic facility it is worth a visit. "Speak to the friendly staff and see what's available at the open day this Sunday, July 29. "Hope to see you there."
