We welcome you to the Copper Coast and invite you to enjoy our wonderful region, which offers the ultimate for lifestyle choice with its unspoilt coastlines, pristine waters, safe swimming beaches and great fishing.
W
ith a population of more than 14,000 people, the Copper Coast comprises Kadina, Moonta, Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and Wallaroo, less than two hours’ drive from Adelaide. It is an ideal destination for day trips, short or long stays with many attractions, accommodation and dining options. The area is named Copper Coast due to its mining heritage dating back to 1859 when copper was discovered at Wallaroo Mines, Kadina. Cornish miners and Welsh smelters then made their home in Australia’s Little Cornwall. As further recognition of our mining heritage, the Moonta Mines area has just been
awarded National Heritage status. Great weather, beaches, fabulous fishing and all amenities, including upgraded boat ramps, make this a special place to visit and live. Vibrant commercial and retail opportunities exist to support the local community and those visiting the area. Enjoy a traditional Cornish pasty, coffee and cake, or a meal at one of the many cafes, bakeries or restaurants. A wide variety of accommodation and dining options makes the Copper Coast an ideal place to visit. There are many things in the area for you to experience so please contact the nationallyaccredited, award-winning Copper Coast Visitor
Information Centre to plan your visit and stay. The centre is located at 50 Mines Road, Kadina, and helpful, friendly staff can help you make the most of your time in the Copper Coast. Relax on the beach, catch some fresh seafood, visit Splash Town Water Park, have a game of bowls or golf, or explore all the region has to offer. We encourage you to take your time, escape everyday life and immerse yourself in this “Lifestyle Location of Choice”. Thank you for picking up this guide and we hope it helps you to experience all the Copper Coast has to offer. – The Copper Coast Tourism and Events Team

REVAMP
Kadina getting a facelift A new and improved Kadina is well on its way. The town centre is being revamped with smooth new roads, uniform and level footpaths, and a more convenient entrance point from the highway.
T
he Kadina CBD redevelopment has been happening for many months, and follows a long period of planning in consultation with the local community and design experts. Key aspects of the new Kadina town centre will include a shared-use thoroughfare along a section of Graves Street. This section will still allow cars to drive along the main street and park for shopping and traffic convenience, but also be an exceptional space for pedestrians. The road will be completely level with the footpaths for optimum safety and social interaction.
6
Copper Coast Lifestyle Location of Choice
The space will be complemented by street trees and re-establish Graves Street as a key shopping precinct within the Copper Coast. As part of the project, all stormwater and power is being moved underground. This way, previously-steep footpath gutters and other potential hazards will be significantly minimised, making the CBD an ideal place to shop for people young and old. Between the two Kadina roundabouts, two commercial allotments are being created. This will expand the CBD without creating two separate business centres, so shoppers can remain within the one precinct for the bulk of their needs.
One allotment has already been earmarked for a major retailer – watch this space. Also between the roundabouts will be a new town entrance, to reduce motoring congestion. This entrance will lead into the CBD past a huge new carpark area, perfect for anyone keen to spend awhile leisurely perusing the various shops in town. The carpark will also allow CBD workers to leave their vehicles away from the main streets, freeing up parking spaces for shoppers. Those who need to quickly stop at one of the businesses will still be able to park all throughout the CBD as well.

adina also boasts one of the state’s premier sporting facilities thanks to a multi-milliondollar upgrade to the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre. A new three-court indoor stadium is the crown jewel of the CCSLC redevelopment. The stadium contains the latest amenities in addition to the board-floor stadium, which is sure to attract basketball and netball players from far and wide. But the stadium is just the beginning of the project. The original stadium will be almost unrecognisable on the inside, as the previous indoor concrete court will become a board-floor show court with grandstand seating, capable of displaying elite competition. The gym will be relocated and improved, and squash courts will be reinstalled, along with fresh administration and cafeteria areas and much more. The CCSLC also boasts an expanded and resealed carpark, and the neighbouring outdoor tennis/netball courts, Kadina Football Club oval and facilities, and skate park all remain. The $10.3million project is being funded by $4.8m from the Australian Government, $2.5m from Copper Coast Council, almost $2.5m from the state government, $500,000 from Kadina Memorial School and $140,000 in community donations.

A brief history of Moonta Mines Shepherd Paddy Ryan discovered copper in Moonta on a pastoral lease owned by Walter Watson Hughes in 1861. Mr Hughes soon recruited miners from the Australian goldfields and Cornwall to work in the new Moonta Mines. Until the 1890s all underground work was done using manual labour, using basic tools, explosives and ladders. Some shafts reached depths of 2500 feet, and the ore was lifted to the surface using horse whims. Enginehouses were built to pump water out of the shafts. At the peak of mining in Moonta, in the 1870s, 2000 men and boys were employed in the mines. The mines closed in 1923 when copper prices fell after World War I.

HERITAGE Hughes Enginehouse
Moonta Mines on the National Heritage List Moonta Mines has been added to the National Heritage List. This acknowledgement reflects what locals and visitors have long known, the mines are a must-see attraction, rich with history to explore.
I
t is also just reward for the many volunteers who have cared for the area throughout the years, including the many current National Trust of South Australia Moonta branch members. Their work has resulted in a vibrant tourist mecca, complete with train rides, an extensive museum, a traditional sweet shop and meticulously-maintained mines buildings.
These historical structures include Hughes Enginehouse, Richmans Enginehouse and the museum itself, which was the town’s former school. The museum has 14 rooms and features displays about Cornish miners’ lifestyles, sports and other pastimes, hardships, costumes, photographs and many other memorabilia items. Just across the road, the Moonta Mines Sweet Shop is an absolute must for people of all ages, combining old-style and newer treats inside a building that takes visitors back in time.
Those interested in their family history can look through the museum, but must make sure to also visit the School of Mines. The School of Mines is in the bustling Moonta town centre, a building formerly owned by the Baptist Church. It contains working scale models of mining machinery, old photographs, a historical medical equipment display and more. The School of Mines’ main attraction is its Family History and Resource Centre, which helps people track their family history with a wealth of invaluable resources.
You could spend a long time driving and walking around the mines, and wandering through the extensive museum displays.
A large collection of newspapers on microfilm, dating back more than 100 years, can also be accessed in the School of Mines.
When you’re ready to put your feet up for awhile, or just keen for a new experience, jump aboard the tourist train for a guided tour of the area.
Moonta Mines is complemented by the bustling Moonta township, stunning Moonta Bay and nearby Port Hughes with coastline seemingly stretching forever.

Old Moonta Railway Station
HISTORY A walk through the Moonta Mines heritage site still causes excitement today when, ambling across the red skimps, a green rock flashes up, its unmistakable hue giving evidence of copper ore. But that is nothing like the excitement it caused in the late 19th Century when two shepherds stumbled across green rocks, heralding what would become a great mining dynasty on Yorke Peninsula. The mining towns of Moonta, Kadina and Wallaroo — now known as the Copper Coast — benefited the most from this mining boom.
Moonta Mines Perhaps it was the luck of the Irish, because Patrick “Paddy” Ryan discovered traces of copper on a pastoral lease of W. W. Hughes in May 1861. A syndicate was formed and members travelled with Ryan to Moonta to see the precise site. When Hughes heard of the discovery he lodged a claim in the name of a dummy, which was rejected, so he returned to Moonta with a surveyor and met Ryan, who showed him where he had found the copper. The survey information had to be taken to John Taylor. Hughes asked William Horn if he could get to Adelaide by 9am the next day. Horn rode nonstop for 22 hours, covering 164 miles and exhausting eight horses. Taylor and the rival syndicate were both present when the Lands Department opened, but Taylor received first attention and secured the leases. A legal battle went to the Privy Council, but Hughes settled out of court. He then formed the Tipara Mining Association — later the Moonta Mining Co — and started operations in late 1861. Almost

5000 ton of ore was produced in the first year. Under the management of mine captain H. R. Hancock the project developed rapidly and by 1865 about 1200 men and boys were employed. By 1870, more than 5000 people were dependent on the mine, which was producing 20,000 ton of dressed ore, averaging 20 per cent copper. By 1876, Moonta was the first mining company in Australia to pay £1,000,000 in dividends. It employed 1700 people. When Moonta and Wallaroo companies amalgamated in 1890, ore worth £5,600,000 had been mined. The new company employed an average of 1900 people during its 33 years of operation with employment reaching 2700 in 1906.
discovered green-coloured stones, likely unearthed by a wombat. He pocketed the stones, forgetting them for a few days before informing Duncan of what he had found. Hughes then secured mineral leases, which he named the Wallaroo Mine after his sheep station. Four Burra miners were hired by Hughes and started mining at Home Shaft in February 1860. By the middle of the year, 150 miners were employed and the Wallaroo Mining Company was formed. By the mid1860s the mine was producing 26,000 ton of ore and, at its zenith between 1870 and 1875, it employed 1000 men and boys.
Wallaroo Mines
The ore needed to be smelted. So, in 1860, the township of Wallaroo was surveyed and the foreshore sold as water allotments to the Wallaroo Mining Company for the establishment of a smelting works. The smelters operated until 1923 and this was at one time the largest smelting works in the world apart from Swansea in Wales.
Copper was first discovered by shepherd James Boor on the pastoral lease of Walter Watson Hughes and his brother-in-law John Duncan. They located copper six miles southwest of the sheep run station called Wallaroo on December 17, 1859. Boor

Exhibits show the hardships endured on the land, detailing the process of land clearing, reliving the vital role of animals on farms and exploring the transition from horse to tractorpowered farming. Other displays include Life at Wallaroo Mines; They Served, about local servicemen and women; The Local Newspaper, with giant printing presses; a 1950s rural schoolroom from Kulpara; Her Side of the Story, about women’s roles on the farm; and Farmyard, highlighting children’s roles on the farm. The farming story starts with a look at many aspects of life for farming families. Interpretive displays follow the process from clearing the scrub to sowing the grain and the progress towards broadacre cereal farming which today sustains Yorke Peninsula. Don’t miss the display Sowing the Seed, the harvesting machinery shed, and the vintage tractor and vehicle collection. You will leave with renewed appreciation of how far the Copper Coast has come, and awe at the tremendous volunteer effort which has gone into creating such high-standard displays. Hughes Enginehouse Moonta Mines (follow signs from Verran Terrace) Hughes Enginehouse is one of Moonta’s iconic buildings and features prominently in almost all Moonta promotional material. It was built from 1863 to 1865 and was a significant contributor to the success of the Moonta Mining Company, its function being to pump water from the underground workings on the largest ore bodies. The Cornish-beam pumping engine pumped water from the adjacent shaft at a depth of 366 metres and from Taylor’s Shaft 300 metres to the north at a depth of 768 metres until the mine closed in 1923.

W
allaroo has a long history. It was once the second busiest port in South Australia, mainly due to mining and smelting. Many historical buildings of that time are still preserved. The population increases significantly at holiday times and there is plenty of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets ranging from inexpensive stays through to tourist parks, group accommodation, luxury apartments and holiday rental properties. People visit for the boating, fishing, beaches, walking trails and all the things that make a seaside resort, but also the history and association with the past. Don’t forget the sunsets — Wallaroo frequently turns on quite a display. Wallaroo Beaches Wallaroo has a number of beaches including Office Beach, North Beach and Sailing Club Beach. These beaches are great for swimming. North Beach is one of the few beaches in South Australia on which a vehicle can still be driven. Wallaroo is also popular for scuba divers and snorkelers. For those looking for the ultimate day’s fishing, various charters are available.
Copper Coast New Year’s Eve Celebrations Chatfield Terrace, Wallaroo Chatfield Terrace at Wallaroo comes alive every New Year’s Eve, when families can enjoy a variety of sideshows and amusements, and plenty of great carnival food. The Copper Coast New Year’s Eve Celebration is an alcohol-free event. Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum Jetty Road, Wallaroo This fascinating museum is in the town’s first post office, built in 1865, and provides an important insight into the early activities of this historical port. The museum has three large buildings full of displays highlighting Wallaroo’s unique heritage. The extensive displays cover the copper smelting era (1861-1923), maritime, shipwrecks, railways, postal and telephone history, local religious life, civic affairs, entertainment, sport, the war years and general local history. The days of sail are illustrated in the large nautical section where visitors can follow the close links the area had with copper mining and smelting, agriculture and the sea. The history of the port of Wallaroo is depicted with more than 70 large ship models, photographs, documents, relics and old record books. An intriguing exhibit is George the giant squid, found inside the stomach of a whale caught off Albany, Western Australia, many years ago. Visit www.wallaroocommunity.org. BUTE & PORT BROUGHTON Port Broughton
These small but vibrant townships are located within the District Council of Barunga West.
P Gunner Bills Gallery, Bute
36
Copper Coast Lifestyle Location of Choice
ort Broughton was surveyed in 1871 to service the surrounding wheat and barley growers on the recommendation of Captain Henry Dale. Aside from farming, commercial fishing is an important part of the local economy, with scalefish and blue swimmer crabs accounting for much of the catch. Like many towns on Yorke Peninsula, Port Broughton is a prime tourist destination with activities such as fishing, crabbing and a variety of water sports being popular. Bute was proclaimed on March 13, 1884, with the first blocks of lands offered for auction in June of the same year. The town maintains its historic charm and strong sense of community means town events are always well attended.

Clements Gap Conservation Park Clements Road, Clements Gap Only 15 minutes north of Port Broughton you can discover the largely undisturbed 11 square kilometres of South Australian remnant bushland. The only remaining building at Clements Gap is the Uniting Church. The church is still used today for monthly services and weddings. The conservation park is home to a variety of plants and is bursting with wildflowers in spring. Visitors can enjoy the photo point poles which have been erected throughout the park, allowing people to take pre-set photographs. Fisherman Bay Fisherman Bay, just down the road from Port Broughton, has two swimming beaches located to the west side of the boat ramp and directly in front of the children’s playground. The beaches are very safe for children when the tide is out. Fisherman Bay has great undercover playgrounds, sandy beaches and lovely grassy areas. Gunner Bill’s Gallery and Craft Railway Terrace, Bute Located in the small farming town of Bute is the beautifullyrestored Gunner Bill’s Gallery and Craft, full of quality arts and craft. Formerly the Bute Police Station, the building was opened in 1911 and consisted of a residence for the police officer and his family, a courthouse, cells and horse stables. Incorporated in the gallery is the historical museum which houses police memorabilia and the history of YP swagmen. Port Broughton Heritage Centre Edmund Street, Port Broughton Book in some time at the Port Broughton Heritage Centre which contains many historical papers, photos, articles and a beautiful Plangon doll collection. It is open 1pm to 3pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, and other times by appointment. For more information, phone Ray Harper on 0407 188 227. Port Broughton Jetty The Port Broughton jetty is sure to make your fishing trip an enjoyable one with a unique inlet from the upper Spencer Gulf providing some first-class fishing for yellowfin whiting and garfish. Dependent on the tide, the inlet at the foreshore is a very safe spot to swim. However, for a deeper swim you can head to the pontoon at the T-section of the jetty. Port Broughton Maritime Museum 6 John Lewis Drive, Port Broughton Come along and see a display of sailing and powerboats, outboard motors and maritime artefacts including paintings, lifesaving devices and radios. Port Broughton Rubber Duck Race Port Broughton comes alive on the October long weekend with plenty to do for all ages. The Port Broughton Sailing and Boat Club hold its biannual rubber duck race on the Port Broughton foreshore which includes various games and activities for the kids. You are sure to find a bargain at the Broughton Seaside Markets, supported by the Port Broughton Progress Association, which are also located on the foreshore. In addition to its duck races in January (a night-time event) and October, the sailing and boat club also holds an annual winter fishing competition on the June long weekend. Port Broughton Visitor Information Outlet 34 McKay Street, Port Broughton Located in the community hall, the visitor information outlet offers information, brochures, referrals to local attractions, and the opportunity to chat to a friendly local volunteer. It is open 9.30am to 3.30pm weekdays and 9am to noon Saturdays.
