The Copper Coast offers the ultimate in lifestyle choices with its unspoilt coastline, pristine waters, safe swimming beaches and great fishing.

W

ith a population of 14,000 people, the Copper Coast comprises of the towns of Kadina, Moonta, Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and Wallaroo just 140 kilometres, a 90 minute drive from Adelaide. It is an ideal destination for day trips, short or long stays with many attractions, accommodation and dining options. The area is named Copper Coast due to the copper mining heritage of the region dating back to 1859 when copper was first discovered at Wallaroo Mines (in Kadina) and Cornish and Welsh miners made their home in Australia’s Little Cornwall. This year we celebrate with the biennial Kernewek Lowender Cornish Festival in May, which attracts more than 40,000 visitors to the area for the week-long program of events. As further recognition of our mining heritage the Moonta Mines area is a National Heritage site. Great weather, beaches, fabulous fishing and all amenities, including upgraded boat ramps, make this a special place to visit and live. Vibrant commercial and retail opportunities exist to support the local community and those visiting the area. Enjoy a traditional Cornish pasty, coffee and cake, or a meal at one of the many cafes, bakeries or restaurants. A wide variety of accommodation options makes the Cooper Coast an ideal place to visit. There are many things in the area for you to experience so please contact the nationally accredited, award-winning Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre to plan your visit and stay. The centre is located at 50 Mines Road, Kadina, and helpful, friendly staff can help you make the most of your time in the Copper Coast. Relax on the beach, catch some fresh seafood, visit Splash Town Water Park, have a game of bowls or golf, or explore all the region has to offer. We encourage you to take your time, escape everyday life and immerse yourself in this “Lifestyle Location of Choice”. Thank you for picking up this guide and we hope it helps you to experience all the Copper Coast has to offer. – The Copper Coast Tourism and Events Team

SAIL INTO 2019 Wallaroo to host 2020 national sailing championships Wallaroo has been chosen to host the Sabre Sailing National Championships from January 4-12, 2020. This is a major coup for the Copper Coast region as the championships have been held in major centres such as Perth and Brisbane in the past.

T

he sabre is a single-handed sailboat designed by Rex Fettell in 1974 and is arguably the largest non-Olympic class with more 36 clubs around Australia. Up to 100 boats are expected to converge on the seaside town for the event which will feature two invitation races, 10 heats and a presentation dinner. The championships will be a boost for the local economy as about 250 people will require accommodation, food and activities outside of the main sailing events. It was South Australia’s turn to host the event in 2020 and, with a building sabre fleet of 11 at Wallaroo, good sailing conditions and plenty of off-water activities, the town was deemed a perfect fit. Wallaroo Sailing Club believes hosting the event will be a great opportunity and put the town on the Australian sailing map.

Organisers of the Kernewek Lowender Copper Coast Cornish Festival are excited to bring you a jam-packed program, Monday to Sunday, May 13-19.

T

he towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo will be buzzing during old-favourite events and some new items. The stories, history and hardship of our Cornish ancestors will be told during a cemetery tour at Moonta by local Cornish Bard and Yorke Peninsula Cornish Association president Liz Coole on Monday. Cemeteries will also feature on Tuesday and Wednesday with the Dressing the Graves ceremonies at Wallaroo, Moonta, Kadina and Greens Plains. Each ceremony will have a different theme — a focus on farming at Greens Plains, the end of the war at Wallaroo, children at Kadina and the history of the area at Moonta. Bookings are essential for the always-popular Feast and Famine dinner, hosted by Kadina Wesley Uniting Church on Wednesday night. This year’s five-course meal will highlight the options available during the mining era and there will be some lively entertainment inbetween each course as well as a good old-fashioned singalong. Moonta comes alive on Friday for the official opening day which includes the Drakes Moonta Parade and Street Party and features a grand procession of floats and costumes as well as the Drakes Pasty Bake-off, maypole and furry dance. Fer Kernewek is a traditional Cornish Fair with varied food, souvenir and trinket stalls as well as all-day entertainment. If you’re looking for something to do on Friday night, you can attend the official launch of the 2019 Newbery Chemist Kernewek Lowender Art Prize, “Meet the Cornish” at a traditional Methodist chapel tea or listen to some country music. The party moves to Kadina on Saturday with the Rotary Village Fair complete with local produce, entertainment and strongman competition. There’s a chance to see more maypole and furry dancing as well as the battle for best dressed in the Cousin Jack and Jenny Competition. Watsacowie Brewery is producing the ever-popular Swanky for the festival, using local barley for the special blend. There’ll be no better place to try the brew than the Swanky Beer Garden at the Apex Wallaroo Street Party on Saturday afternoon. The Gathering of the Bards Ceremony, also in Wallaroo on Saturday, is not to be missed. The program continues with the Blessing of the Waters and an Aussie breakfast at the Wallaroo Sailing Club before the RAA/Rosewarne’s Cavalcade of Cars and Motorcycles on Sunday. There are plenty of opportunities to learn more about your Cornish connections during the week, taste a Cornish pasty or even learn to bake your own goods as well as guided tours and art for all. This is a true community event — the involvement of local organisations, businesses and the wider community sets the Kernewek Lowender apart and makes it the most recognised celebration of everything Cornish outside of Cornwall. Full program details can be found at www.kernewek.org. For more information, call 8821 2333 or email kernewek@coppercoast.sa.gov.au.

n 2019, it will be held from Tuesday to Thursday, September 2426. It is the largest field days event in Australia and the first trial was held near Bute on July 31, 1895; the permanent site at Paskeville was established in 1975. With a history spanning more than 120 years, this biennial event is now a multi-million dollar showcase of the latest innovations in agricultural machinery, products, rural services and technology and is acclaimed as one of Australia’s major agricultural field days. Visitors often base themselves in the coastal towns of Wallaroo and Moonta Bay to attend the event daily. The YP Field Days has a new chief executive officer at the helm with Peter Anderson taking over the role from Elaine Bussenschutt in November 2018. “It’s a great community event and a great opportunity to showcase local retailers and their products, as well as businesses from further afield,” Mr Anderson said. “There’s lots to see and do for all generations and persuasions. It’s a major boost to the local economy in terms of accommodation venues and restaurants with people coming to the area to spend time.” The event has a major focus on agriculture, featuring extensive displays of the latest agricultural machinery and equipment, technology, information and services. However, there is entertainment for everyone with fashion parades, crafts, family products and services, guest speaker presentations, education and animals. Displays and demonstrations include cropping trials, working sheepdogs, wool and sheep, farm machinery and equipment, tools and accessories, rural buildings and automotive. The field days is organised by a committee formed from eight local branches of the Agricultural Bureau of SA. President for the 2019 event is Bruce Philbey.

HISTORY& HERITAGE A walk through the Moonta Mines heritage site still causes excitement today when, ambling across the red skimps, a green rock flashes up, its unmistakable hue giving evidence of copper ore. But that is nothing like the excitement it caused in the late 19th century when two shepherds stumbled across green rocks, heralding what would become a great mining dynasty on Yorke Peninsula. The mining towns of Moonta, Kadina and Wallaroo — now known as the Copper Coast — benefited the most from this mining boom.

Wallaroo Mines Copper was first discovered by shepherd James Boor on the pastoral lease of Walter Watson Hughes and his brother-in-law John Duncan. They located copper six miles southwest of the sheep run station called Wallaroo on December 17, 1859. Boor discovered green-coloured stones, likely unearthed by a wombat. He pocketed the stones, forgetting them for a few days before informing Duncan of what he had found. Hughes then secured mineral leases, which he named the Wallaroo Mine after his sheep station. He hired four Burra miners and started mining at Home Shaft in February 1860. By the middle of the year, 150 miners were employed and the Wallaroo Mining Company was formed. By the mid-1860s the mine was producing 26,000 ton of ore and, at its zenith between 1870 and 1875, it employed 1000 men and boys.

Moonta Mines Patrick “Paddy” Ryan discovered traces of copper on a pastoral lease of W. W. Hughes in May 1861. A syndicate was formed and members travelled with Ryan to Moonta to see the precise site. When Hughes heard of the discovery he lodged a claim in the name of a dummy, which was rejected, so he returned to Moonta with a surveyor and met Ryan, who showed him where he had found the copper. The survey information had to be taken to John Taylor. Hughes asked William Horn if he could get to Adelaide by 9am the next day. Horn rode nonstop for 22 hours, covering 164 miles and exhausting eight horses. Taylor and the rival syndicate were both present when the Lands Department opened, but Taylor received first attention and secured the leases. A legal battle went to the Privy Council, but Hughes settled out of court. He then formed the Tipara Mining Association — later the Moonta Mining Co — and started operations in late 1861. Almost 5000 ton of ore was produced in the first year. Under the management of mine captain H. R. Hancock the project developed rapidly and by 1865 about 1200 men and boys were employed. By 1870, more than 5000 people were dependent on the mine, which was producing 20,000 ton of dressed ore, averaging 20 per cent copper. By 1876, Moonta was the first mining company in Australia to pay one million pounds in dividends. It employed 1700 people. When Moonta and Wallaroo companies amalgamated in 1890, ore worth 5.6million pounds had been mined. The new company employed an average of 1900 people during its 33 years of operation with employment reaching 2700 in 1906.

Smelting Copper

12

Copper Coast Lifestyle Location of Choice

The ore needed to be smelted. So, in 1860, the township of Wallaroo was surveyed and the foreshore sold as water allotments to the Wallaroo Mining Company for the establishment of a smelting works. The smelters operated until 1923 and this was at one time the largest smelting works in the world apart from Swansea in Wales.

KADINA COMING TO LIFE

Kadina has become an absolute hub of activity, with major upgrades having been delivered and many more on their way.

T

he town centre is being revitalised with new roads and footpaths providing improved pedestrian safety and traffic flow along with a modern look. Motorists can now navigate main CBD via a square of one-way roads — Graves, Hallett, Taylor and Goyder Streets. These former two-lane streets are now instead one wide single lane, allowing more space for people pulling out of carparks as well as shorter distances for pedestrians to cross the roads. Roads in the outer CBD allow travel both ways, including on Frances Terrace where there is now ample carparking. Frances Terrace includes the Woolworths supermarket at one end of the CBD, and the new Aldi supermarket at the other. Aldi’s arrival in the town hub is expected to provide a further boost for the modernised, vibrant shopping district. On your way along Frances Terrace, or the main highway which runs parallel, you will notice a brilliant new mural painted on the Kadina water tower. This piece features nods to the town’s history including mining and the rail system, which the water tower formerly serviced. Apart from the shopping hub there is more to see and do than ever. Kadina Apex Club is leading the way with its Walk in the Trees play equipment project in Victoria Square, on the edge of the CBD across the road from the post office and police station. Walk in the Trees will be an elevated adventure playground, allowing children to play among the treetops in a safe yet exciting setting. It will complement the existing playground nearby, which features extensive equipment as well as the Apex Express train centrepiece. Families looking for more activities can visit The Copper Coast Tourism Centre which features an indoor play cafe with slides, a ball pit, climbing equipment, interactive projections and more. Miniature train rides and tours of the extensive museum are also on offer, and watch out for the coming attraction — mini golf. Work is starting on a mini golf course at the tourism centre in the near future so visit or call to enquire. As if all this progress wasn’t enough, the Kadinabased Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre has also had a major upgrade. The centre now boasts a three-court indoor stadium, a fourth show court, a new gym, squash courts and much more. It also features an outdoor playground and two outdoor courts available 24/7, and is alongside the town oval as well as the skate park. Kadina is growing and offering more for visitors all the time — check it out for yourself.

The Farm Shed Museum

The Farm Shed Museum Address: Copper Coast Tourism Centre, 50 Mines Road, Kadina The museum brings together some of the fascinating developments and practices of dryland farming. Exhibits show the hardships endured on the land, detailing the process of land clearing, reliving the vital role of animals on farms and exploring the transition from horse to tractorpowered farming. A collection of varied farming machinery is complemented by Kadina history

themes. The Wallaroo mine, where copper mining started, was within sight of Matta House, the historical residence which forms part of the museum. Matta House evokes the mining era. Other displays include Life at Wallaroo Mines; They Served, about local service men and women; The Local Newspaper, with giant printing presses; a 1950s rural schoolroom from Kulpara; Her Side of the Story, about women’s roles on the farm; and Farmyard, highlighting children’s roles on the farm. The farming story starts with a look at

many aspects of life for farming families. Interpretive displays follow the process from clearing the scrub to sowing the grain and the progress towards broadacre cereal farming which sustains Yorke Peninsula. Don’t miss the display Sowing the Seed, the harvesting machinery shed, and the vintage tractor and vehicle collection. You will leave with renewed appreciation of how far the Copper Coast has come, and an appreciation of the tremendous volunteer effort which has gone into creating such high-standard displays.

allaroo has a long history. It was once the second busiest port in South Australia, mainly due to mining and smelting. Many historical buildings of that time are still preserved. The population increases significantly at holiday times and there is plenty of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets ranging from inexpensive stays through to tourist parks, group accommodation, luxury apartments and holiday rental properties. People visit for the boating, fishing, beaches, walking trails and all the things that make a seaside resort, but also the history and association with the past. Don’t forget the sunsets — Wallaroo frequently turns on quite a display.

Wallaroo Beaches Wallaroo has a number of beaches including Office Beach, North Beach and Sailing Club Beach. These beaches are great for swimming. For those looking for the ultimate day’s fishing, various charters are available.

Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum Address: Jetty Road, Wallaroo This fascinating museum is in the town’s first post office, built in 1865, and provides an important insight into the early activities of this historic port. The museum consists of three large buildings full of displays highlighting Wallaroo’s unique heritage. The extensive displays cover the copper smelting era (1861-1923), maritime, shipwrecks, railways, postal and telephone history, local religious life, civic affairs, entertainment, sport, the war years and general local history. The days of sail are illustrated in the large nautical section where visitors can follow the close links the area had with copper mining and smelting, agriculture and the sea. The history of the port of Wallaroo is depicted with more than 70 large ship models, photographs, documents, relics and old record books. An intriguing exhibit is George the giant squid, found inside the stomach of a whale caught off Albany, Western Australia, many years ago. Visit www.wallaroocommunity.org.

BUTE & PORT BROUGHTON These small but vibrant townships are located within the Barunga West Council region.

P Bute

36

Copper Coast Lifestyle Location of Choice

ort Broughton was surveyed in 1871 to service the surrounding wheat and barley growers on the recommendation of Captain Henry Dale. Aside from farming, commercial fishing is an important part of the local economy, with scalefish and blue swimmer crabs accounting for much of the catch. Like many towns on Yorke Peninsula, Port Broughton is a prime tourist destination with activities such as fishing, crabbing and a variety of water sports being popular. Bute was proclaimed on March 13, 1884, with the first blocks of lands offered for auction in June of the same year. The town maintains its historic charm and strong sense of community means town events are always well attended.

Port Broughton Parkrun Free worldwide event Parkrun has sprinted into Port Broughton. The free run/walk is held at various locations around the world every Saturday at 8am. The track begins and ends at the carpark at the intersection of West Terrace and James Street, heads south along the foreshore and then onto the beach past the Port Broughton Caravan Park. Anyone can attend the weekly run/walk and people interested in joining should visit www.parkrun.com.au/ portbroughton to register before the event.

Clements Gap Conservation Park

Port Broughton Maritime Museum

Address: Clements Road, Clements Gap Only 15 minutes north of Port Broughton you can discover the largely undisturbed 11 square kilometres of South Australian remnant bushland. The only remaining building at Clements Gap is the Uniting Church. The church is still used today for monthly services and weddings. The conservation park is home to a variety of plants and is bursting with wildflowers in spring. Visitors can enjoy the photo point poles which have been erected throughout the park, allowing people to take pre-set photographs.

Address: 6 John Lewis Drive, Port Broughton Come along and see a display of sailing and powerboats, outboard motors and maritime artefacts including paintings, lifesaving devices and radios.

Port Broughton Visitor Information Outlet Address: 34 McKay Street, Port Broughton Located in the community hall, the visitor information outlet offers information, brochures, referrals to local attractions, and the opportunity to chat to a friendly local volunteer. It is open 9.30am to 3.30pm weekdays and 9am to noon Saturdays.

Fisherman Bay Fisherman Bay, just down the road from Port Broughton, has two swimming beaches located to the west side of the boat ramp and directly in front of the children’s playground. The beaches are very safe for children when the tide is out. Fisherman Bay has great undercover playgrounds, sandy beaches and lovely grassy areas.

Port Broughton Heritage Centre Address: Edmund Street, Port Broughton Book in some time at the Port Broughton Heritage Centre which contains many historical papers, photos, articles and a beautiful Plangon doll collection. Port Broughton Jetty The Port Broughton jetty is sure to make your fishing trip an enjoyable one with a unique inlet from the upper Spencer Gulf providing some first-class fishing for yellowfin whiting and garfish. Dependent on the tide, the inlet at the foreshore is a very safe spot to swim. However, for a deeper swim you can head to the pontoon at the T-section of the jetty.

Port Broughton Rubber Duck Race Port Broughton comes alive on the October long weekend with plenty to do for all ages. The Port Broughton Sailing and Boat Club hold its annual rubber duck race on the Port Broughton foreshore which includes various games and activities for the kids. You are sure to find a bargain at the Broughton Seaside Markets, supported by the Port Broughton Progress Association, which are also located on the foreshore. In addition to its duck race, the sailing and boat club also holds an annual winter fishing competition on the June long weekend.

PORT BROUGHTON VISITOR OUTLET Situated in the Community Hall 34 McKay Street Offers information, brochures, referrals to local attractions and the opportunity to chat to a ‘local’ friendly volunteer!
