Yorke Peninsula’s Copper Coast offers an ideal location if you are looking for relaxation, a beautiful white sandy and safe swimming beach, a good fishing or diving spot, or a glimpse back into the heyday of South Australia’s copper mining days. With a population of 15,000 people, the Copper Coast comprises the main towns of Kadina, Moonta, Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and Wallaroo — all just a 150 kilometre drive from Adelaide. It is an ideal destination for daytrips, short or long stays with many attractions, accommodation and dining options. The original home of the Nharangga people, the region’s prosperity is attributed to the wealth of the land that now lends itself to a rich agricultural sector. The area is named Copper Coast in recognition of the copper mining heritage of the region, dating back to 1859 when copper was first discovered at Wallaroo Mines (Kadina) and Cornish and Welsh miners made their home in “Australia’s Little Cornwall”. The importance of the Moonta Mines area is recognised as it is a National Heritage site.
Great weather, beaches, fabulous fishing and all amenities, including upgraded boat ramps, make this a special place to visit and live. Vibrant commercial and retail opportunities exist to support the local community and those visiting the area. Enjoy a traditional Cornish pasty, coffee and cake, or a meal at one of the many cafes, bakeries, hotels or restaurants. A wide variety of accommodation options makes the Copper Coast an ideal place to visit. With an event calendar filled with many activities including the biennial Kernewek Lowender Cornish Festival, Masters Games and YP Field Days, the region will be a hive of activity throughout 2021. There are many things for you to experience, so please contact the accredited Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre to plan your visit and stay. The centre is located at 50 Mines Road, Kadina, and its helpful, friendly staff can help you make the most of your time in the Copper Coast. It’s the ideal place to get all the latest local knowledge and information about what to see and do while visiting the Copper Coast. Relax on the beach, catch some fresh seafood, enjoy the walking and cycling trails, have a game of putt putt, bowls or golf, and explore all the region has to offer. We encourage you to take your time, escape everyday life and immerse yourself in this “Lifestyle Location of Choice”. We hope this Visitor Guide helps you to experience all the Copper Coast has to offer. – The Copper Coast Tourism and Events Team

Kernewek Lowender Cornish Festival | May 17-23, 2021 Kernewek Lowender finance officer Gabriella Jackman, president Lynn Spurling and executive officer Dianne McDowell in front of Matta House, Kadina.
The Kernewek Lowender Cornish Festival remains one of the Copper Coast’s major drawcards, and plans are well underway for the upcoming 25th event on May 17-23. The weeklong festival is held every two years and attracts enthusiastic crowds for events of all sizes, from the iconic Maypole and furry dances to fairs, street parties, Cornish pasty making and a cavalcade of classic cars/motorcycles. The Copper Coast’s proud association with Cornish culture can be traced back to the mining days of the mid-to-late 1800s. Miners and their families travelled from Cornwall, as well as Wales and elsewhere, to work in the local mines. In doing so, they became important settlers in the region, and the knowledge they brought with them from the copper mines of Cornwall was pivotal to the success of local operations. When a group of locals decided to acknowledge that history by holding the first Kernewek Lowender in 1973, they could only have hoped the festival would remain so popular half a century later. Kernewek Lowender executive officer Dianne McDowell is busy organising the 2021 event with help from a dedicated team. “There is a high level of enthusiasm and anticipation among local businesses and organisations who are jumping on
board to support the 2021 Kernewek Lowender,” Dianne said. “As well as the traditional Moonta parade and Fer Kernewek, maypole dancing, furry dance, Kadina Village Fair and Cavalcade of Cars and Motorcycles, we are looking to build on last festival’s successful launch of the street party in Wallaroo, now named the Bond Store Wallaroo Street Party. “We are also excited swanky (Cornish beer) will again be produced for this festival by Watsacowie Brewery, Minlaton. “The 2021 festival is looking as interesting and exciting as ever and is a real testament to the esteem that we extend to our Cornish forebears.” Gabriella Jackman is sharing the executive officer workload with Dianne, and is also the KL finance officer. She became involved in the event when joining as finance officer in the lead-up to the 2019 festival. “We are busy doing a lot of marketing and promotional work, and our new website is now live,” Gabriella said. The organisers are pushing ahead and ensuring a festival will be held, even if some changes have to be made due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Regardless of what happens with the coronavirus, we are still holding the festival so everyone can come and celebrate the meaning of the Kernewek Lowender,” Gabriella said. Public Art | Kadina, Wallaroo, Moonta
Artistic attractions abound
Public artwork has enlivened the Copper Coast in recent years, and visitors could easily spend a day — or longer — checking out the many and varied pieces throughout the region.

In recognition of the significant amount of public art that can now be found in the area, Copper Coast Art Trail brochures are in development for Kadina, Wallaroo and Moonta. “Yorke Peninsula’s Copper Coast is fortunate to have a diverse range of public art on display,” Copper Coast Council tourism coordinator Lynn Spurling said. “These trails will identify public art pieces and enable everyone to discover and appreciate our talented local artists. “It is hoped more art will be installed around our region that can be added in the future.” Mrs Spurling said the brochures would complement those already available for local heritage driving and walking trails. “These self-paced trails are a popular way to discover the unique heritage, attractions and culture of the region, and have been even more popular during COVID-19.”
The latest, and certainly one of the most impressive, public art displays is the Wallaroo Silo Light Show, featuring art projected onto the iconic silos (for more information, see separate story). Also in Wallaroo, you can find a long and growing mural along the old railway line area, mosaics along the foreshore near the jetty and much more. Kadina’s town centre features a huge painting on the old water tower, a nod to the region’s copper mining and Cornish past, plus a large mural on the side of Kadina Jewellers. Keen observers will also notice small “fairy doors” on many Kadina shops, which are a hit with children in particular. At Moonta, Queen Square has a mosaic bench and wombat sculptures in honour of the creatures credited with first unearthing copper locally. These are just a few of the opportunities to enjoy public art on the Copper Coast, which also has several indoor art spaces well worth visiting.

The event featured local images, stories and artworks projected onto the Wallaroo silos, and has inspired a permanent installation which will show nightly. More than 2000 people experienced the local display the first time around, and crowds are expected to again flock to the new attraction. Multiple viewing locations will be available, including from the comfort of your car. Council put $100,000 from its second allocation of federal government Drought Communities Programme — Extension funding towards creating a regular light display. Now the infrastructure is in place and council is ready to showcase more local artists’ talents this summer. A call went out to the community for interested artists to send in their work for inclusion in this season’s first shows. The theme — Copper Coast, Through Your Eyes — attracted some excellent pieces of work. “What better way to open our event than exhibiting what the Copper Coast has to offer, while giving our community the chance to display their creativity?” CEO Russell Peate said. “We’ve got some fantastic sights which draw tourists here, and it’ll be fantastic to see them all illuminated on the silos.” The Wallaroo Silo Light Show commenced its first run of shows in December, and plans soon began for
future seasons. “Just because content submitted in the first theme didn’t get a run, does not mean it won’t be displayed in the future as many other themed shows are being planned,” Russell said.
Best in the nation Illuminart Australia’s Travelling Light tour — the inspiration for the permanent Wallaroo Silo Light Show — received national recognition. It was named the Best Regional Event at the 2020 Australian Event Awards in October. The tour visited regional communities across the state for a month, illuminating landmarks with projected art and stories created collaboratively with regional artists and local residents. Wallaroo was a highlight as it was the largest projection surface for the entire tour. “The spectacular Travelling Light displayed vibrant, colourful moving image and art on to silos, town halls, two ships, a lighthouse, wharf buildings and a museum, bringing a crowd together at each place to enjoy the free spectacle,” an illuminart spokesperson said. “The winter event was a huge hit, with each town managing their own event, and building on the enthusiasm to have local charities and community groups involved. “For most towns, it was the first time such a large projected display had ever been seen, and tantalised the community with appreciation of local art and heritage, and inspirations from the wonder of light.”

150th Kadina Show
Kadina is now home to the Copper Coast’s first off-leash dog park. The Kadina Dog Park is located on Doswell Terrace and features a range of activities to keep pooches of all sizes and breeds entertained. There are lawn areas, tunnels, ramps and many more obstacles, all within a secure enclosure. There are of course also water bowls and doggy bags provided. Entrance to the park uses a double-gate system, ensuring owners can remove their dogs’ leashes, and put them back on, without their furry friends running away. Kadina Dog Park was built by the Copper Coast Council with funding from the federal government’s Drought Communities Programme — Extension.
One of the biggest attractions on Yorke Peninsula’s Copper Coast is the Splash Town water park on the Moonta Bay foreshore. Splash Town is now even more user friendly, as it has new shade sails to keep users safe from UV rays while they enjoy the huge tipper bucket, water slides and array of other features. The shades were purchased and installed thanks to the federal government’s Drought Communities Programme — Extension. Copper Coast Council put $180,000 of the drought funding toward the project. Those using Splash Town are encouraged to slip, slop and slap to ensure maximum sun protection.
The 150th Kadina Show is being held August 21-22, 2021. The Kadina A. H. & F. Society, which runs the show, has been busy preparing and fundraising for the big event. The show has plenty to do for people of all ages including competitions for everything from art and photography through to produce and garden items. There are sideshows and rides for the young — and young at heart — market stalls, entertainers, and a wide variety of food and drink options. The show also incorporates Horses in Action, so horse-riding competitions can be viewed throughout the weekend — and don’t forget to go home with a showbag! Copper Coast Lifestyle Location of Choice

Come and Bond with the Copper Coast’s newest dining attraction Now more than ever tourism is playing an important role in the local economy. With COVID-19 travel restrictions, South Australians have been looking for hidden gems in their backyards. Luckily for Nicole and Derek Matthewman, attracting visitors to the area is exactly what they envisioned when they set about creating Wallaroo’s first microbrewery and distillery, the Bond Store. “One of the reasons we set the business up was to give all the people coming to Wallaroo something to do while they were here as well as an added reason to visit,” Mr Matthewman said. “We love Wallaroo and want to see it as popular as it should be, we want to be able to share it with people who haven’t been here. “We want to give people an added reason to visit and hope they love it as much as we do.” Since coronavirus restrictions eased and the Bond Store reopened, support has surged, Mr Matthewman said. “We have been amazed at the support we have been getting from not only locals, but people from far away,” he said. “We often get people driving from Adelaide, Clare and the Barossa just to visit us, so it’s really heartening to see our dream, which we didn’t know would work, is working.” Mr Matthewman said people were starting to discover what SA had to offer. “Wallaroo is so close to Adelaide and is the perfect distance to go away for a weekend,” he said. “It wasn’t on people’s radars because there were too many other people who could outspend us in marketing. “However, when people looked closer to home, they could see there was this oasis so close, and the people comment how friendly the locals are.” The couple purchased the historical Elands Bonded Store on Owen Terrace, where barrels of gin and whiskey amongst other things had been traded and stored from 1865, in 2014. They first converted the top level into group accommodation, before turning the ground floor and cellar to a microbrewery, distillery and restaurant that opened in December 2019. “When the building on Owen Terrace became available it was a bit of a sick puppy and we
Adelady presenters Hayley Pearson and Lauren De Cesare enjoy their drinks and food at Bond Store, Wallaroo. knew it needed someone to lovingly restore it,” Mr Matthewman said. “Since we bought it, we had always imagined the two floors downstairs could be a microbrewery and distillery. “The property is in the centre of the main street and for so long it looked like someone had knocked the tooth out of a beautiful smile. “The building itself is huge and it has been such a big part of Wallaroo’s history so we wanted to bring it back to its former glory.” Mr Matthewman said he and Nicole were proud of what they had created for the area. “I think traditionally you have either a microbrewery or a distillery, it’s very rare to have both in the same place, and it means we have something for everyone,” Mr Matthewman said. “People love to know the provenance of their product and love to know it has been handmade by people who really care about the ingredients. “People care about the way it tastes, care about where the ingredients came from and like to know the money they spend is being ploughed back into the community.”
“We love Wallaroo and want to see it as popular as it should be, we want to be able to share it with people who haven’t been here. We want to give people an added reason to visit and hope they love it as much as we do.” – Derek Matthewman

History and Heritage | Copper Coast
Wallaroo Mines
Discover our local History Everything that makes Yorke Peninsula’s Copper Coast a fantastic region to visit can be traced back to the moment copper was discovered in the region. The mining boom that resulted led to rapid growth in the region, while also providing a vital boost to the South Australian economy. Today, much of that mining history has been lovingly preserved in recognition of its significance to the local and wider regions. Moonta Mines is acknowledged via placement on the National Heritage register and is a particularly fantastic site to explore — with government funding meaning an even better visitor experience is soon on its way.
Richman’s Enginehouse circa 1884
Copper was first discovered by shepherd James Boor on the pastoral lease of Walter Watson Hughes and his brother-in-law John Duncan, six miles southwest of the sheep run station called Wallaroo, on December 17, 1859. Boor discovered green-coloured stones, believed to have been unearthed by a wombat. He pocketed the stones, and actually forgot about them for a few days before telling Duncan about them. Hughes then secured mineral leases, which he named the Wallaroo Mine after his sheep station. He hired four Burra miners and started mining at Home Shaft in February 1860. By the middle of the year, 150 miners were employed and the Wallaroo Mining Company was formed. By the mid-1860s, the mine was producing 26,000 ton of ore. At its peak, 1870 to 1875, the mine employed 1000 men and boys.
Moonta Mines Patrick “Paddy” Ryan discovered traces of copper on a pastoral lease of Walter Watson Hughes in May 1861. A syndicate was formed and members travelled with Ryan to Moonta to see the site. When Hughes heard of the discovery, he lodged a claim in the name of a dummy, but this was rejected. He returned to Moonta with a surveyor and met Ryan, who showed him where he had found the copper. The survey information had to be taken to John Taylor. Hughes asked William Horn if he could get to Adelaide by 9am the next day, so Horn rode nonstop for 22 hours, covering 164 miles and exhausting eight horses. Taylor and the rival syndicate were both present when the Lands Department opened, but Taylor received first attention and secured the leases. A legal battle went to the Privy Council, but Hughes settled out of court. He then formed the Tipara Mining Association — later the Moonta Mining Co — and started operations in late1861. Almost 5000 ton of ore was produced in the first year. Under the management of mine captain Henry Richard “Cap’n” Hancock, the project developed rapidly and by 1865 about 1200 men and boys were employed. By 1870, more than 5000 people were dependent on the mine, which was producing 20,000 ton of dressed ore, averaging 20 per cent copper. By 1876, Moonta employed 1700 people and became the first mining company in Australia to pay one million pounds in dividends. When Moonta and Wallaroo companies amalgamated in 1890, ore worth 5.6million pounds had been mined. The new company employed an average of 1900 people during its 33 years of operation, with employment reaching 2700 in 1906.

The ore being mined had to be smelted so, in 1860, the Wallaroo township was surveyed and the foreshore sold as water allotments to the Wallaroo Mining Company for the establishment of a smelting works. The smelters operated until 1923 and were at one time the largest smelting works in the world outside of Swansea in Wales.

The town jetty is a great spot for fishing and blue swimmer crabs, Australian herring (tommy ruff), garfish and squid are just some of the species on the menu. Port Hughes is also a boatie’s paradise, with a newly-refurbished boat ramp now boasting more lanes for launching and retrieving, protected by breakwaters, as well as ample parking, wash-down facilities and more. South Beach has gained a reputation as one of the state’s most pristine, and is just one of many sections of beautiful coastline Port Hughes has to offer. The Port Hughes Coastal Trail begins at Simms Cove and is a great way to take in the scenery while learning about the town’s history.

Wallaroo
Wallaroo is the largest seaside town in the Copper Coast, allowing you to drive straight onto a sweeping beach, step out of the car and feel the sand between your toes. Wallaroo features popular spots to eat, stay and shop including the Wallaroo Shopping Centre. Its shipping terminal caters for international grain needs and shares the picturesque foreshore with ideal spots to fish, swim or just relax. Wallaroo was once the second busiest port in South Australia, mainly due to mining and smelting. Many historic buildings from that time are still preserved. There is plenty of accommodation to suit all 32 Copper Coast – Wallaroo Lifestyle Location of Choice
tastes and budgets, including tourist parks, group accommodation, luxury apartments and holiday rentals. People visit for the boating, fishing, coastline, walking trails and all the things that make a seaside resort, but also the history and association with the past. One attraction is a mural at the old railway station, near the fantastic Wallaroo Adventure Playground. Don’t forget the sunsets — Wallaroo frequently turns on quite a display.
Wallaroo Jetty Wallaroo jetty is 867 metres long with three berths each side accommodating large freighters which utilise the significant bulk grain handling facilities. The jetty has also recently accommodated a commercial cruise ship on several occasions. Pristine waters provide a haven for multitudes of marine life including garfish, squid and whiting.

Rotary Copper Trail walking/cycling track The Rotary Copper Trail between Wallaroo and Kadina allows people to walk, run, cycle or use their mobility aids without having to negotiate vehicular traffic. The track starts with the Wallaroo Avenue of Honour, which recognises those who lost their lives in war, located near the Wallaroo Town Hall. It then stretches along the original railway line to Kadina, with informative signs, shelter stops and sights along the way.

The whole family will love the spectacular fireworks displays. The New Year’s Eve Celebration is an alcohol-free event.
Wallaroo beaches
Wallaroo has a number of beaches including Office Beach, North Beach and Sailing Club Beach. All are great for swimming. Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum
Address: Jetty Road, Wallaroo
This fascinating museum is in the town’s first post office, built in 1865, and provides an important insight into the early activities of this historic port. The museum consists of displays highlighting Wallaroo’s unique heritage. The extensive displays cover the copper smelting era (1861-1923), maritime, shipwrecks, railways, postal and telephone history, local religious life, civic affairs, entertainment, sport, the war years and general local history. The days of sail are illustrated in the large nautical section where visitors can follow the close links the area had with copper mining and smelting, agriculture and the sea. The history of the port of Wallaroo is depicted with more than 70 large ship models, photographs, documents, relics and old record books. An intriguing exhibit is George the giant squid, found inside the stomach of a whale caught off Albany, Western Australia, many years ago.

Discover | Yorke Peninsula
The Copper Coast is the perfect home base from which visitors can explore all the Yorke Peninsula has to offer. You can venture north to the Top of the Yorke, checking out the beautiful coastline of Port Broughton, complete with a bustling shopping precinct and foreshore play areas for the kids, or stop by the secluded beaches of Tickera. Karimi’s Kitchen is one of the peninsula’s hidden treasurers — how many towns the size of Alford (population 158) can boast an eatery run by an acclaimed chef? The locals certainly know about the delights of Karimi’s Kitchen, and it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a must-visit location for those outside the area. South of the Copper Coast, you’ll find the rest of “the leg” with all its wonders. Sweeping beaches feature the entire length of the peninsula, and great fishing spots abound. Keen fishers target King George whiting, squid, blue swimmer crabs and more from the many jetties, or by using the ample boatlaunching facilities. Almost every town has its own unique personality and shopping experiences to offer, and the major towns have everything you could need for an enjoyable visit. Yorke Peninsula has so much to see and do, including cafes, hotels and restaurants, a microbrewery for fans of beer and cider, and a cellar door for wine lovers. It even has a gin and vodka distillery, Sunny Hill Distillery, based at Arthurton. Visitors arriving at Sunny Hill can see sweeping plains for miles. There are a range of comfortable indoor and outdoor seating options, food choices, and the cocktails are to die for. You can even see the spirit-making operation while ordering from the counter. The entire Yorke Peninsula is an easy day trip from the Copper Coast, or a perfect option for a couple of days away as part of a longer Copper Coast stay.
Discover Innes National Park
Sam and Olivia Colliver, of Arthurton, owners of Sunny Hill Distillery. Above: Karimi Manners from Karimi’s Kitchen.
Innes National Park is only a couple of hours from the Copper Coast at the foot of Yorke Peninsula, and makes for the perfect day trip. Innes features breathtaking coastal scenery, numerous beautiful beaches, the historical Inneston township, a chance to get up close and personal with native wildlife and more. Innes is also a surfer’s dream, with swell to cater for all levels, and offers outstanding shore-based fishing. Among the many attractions is the Ethel shipwreck, which rises from Ethel Beach and at certain times can be fully exposed in all its glory. The park is accessible by two-wheel drive, and can also be enjoyed by bushwalking with trails ranging from half-hour strolls to four-hour adventures. Those wishing to stay longer, or return in the future, can also camp. Visiting Innes National Park requires a permit which can be obtained via www.parks.sa.gov.au.
