Paskeville goes back-to-back Kenn ROGERS REPORT BY

Paskeville, before a huge crowd, proved why it was the best in the 2015 YPFL A grade competition, defeating second-best Kadina in convincing form. Todd Price stood tall from the outset for the Magpies and continued his top form throughout the game. Nick Madden was fired up in the forward lines and gave his team something to aim for. At the other end of the ground, Willy Serle and Geoff Munn were well held by the Magpie defenders. Tagged, Josh Lawson wasn’t able to get into the game for Kadina. Kadina’s Jono Lee won the ruck but Shayne Biasci and Abraham Helfand’s work winning the ball out of centre was superb. Seth Matson and Price opened the scoring for the Magpies in quick succession before Kadina’s Trevor Harradine replied. No matter what Kadina did, Paskeville replied with top-class football. Kicking with the wind, Kadina was unable to take advantage; although the wind was only slight, it was the scoring end of the ground. Paskeville added goals late in the term from Biasci and Matt Rodda to have a lead of 5.3 to Kadina 3.3. The second quarter was relatively even, Paskeville

scoring 4.4 to Kadina’s 3.2; halftime scores, Pasky 9.7, Kadina 6.5. Standout players for Kadina this quarter were Adam Cullen, Lee — who was rucking well — and Brett Burnell at centre. Pasky defenders Ryan Clasohm, Martin Daniel, Tyson Wait and Stuart Daniel won their positions well and had Serle under control. Paskeville did not have a passenger and all wanted the ball more than the opposition. Kadina’s Waylon Johncock was hardly sighted, Derek Sansbury tried hard all day, and Munn tried hard, to no avail. Benn Waller worked hard and Lawson did good things but not on his terms as he was well covered. At three-quarter time, Pasky led 10.11 to 7.5. Kadina opened the final term with a rush and goals from Ben McNicholl, Serle and Cullen to close the gap and have supporters on edge looking for brilliant finish. However, that was not to be as Pasky settled and drew away in the last part of the game. Kadina ran out of legs and Pasky grew another leg on each player. Magpies’ Mark Dolling at centre, Wait on the half-back line, Clasohm and Martin Daniel all stood tall when needed, along with Madden up in front of goals

Moonta steals flag from CY Cougars Colin BRIDGES REPORT BY

To start the first-ever CY Cougars v Moonta grand final, Moonta chose to kick towards the Tim Chappell’s Scoreboard end of the Maitland oval, but the Cats opened the scoring with a point. Little did anyone know it would be the only time the home side would lead for the match.

The Demons responded with three majors to Fallon Wanganeen, Sam Watson and Luke Ramsey. Joshua Baker got one back for Cougars, but Watson and Wanganeen replied for the Dees before a late Cougar goal raised local hopes. Quarter time: Moonta 5.6, CY Cougars 2.1. Cougars lifted in the second term, but couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard

and Moonta goaled against the flow. Angus Bruce found space to add a badly needed goal for Cougars but, when the siren sounded, Moonta’s lead had only been cut by two points. Halftime: Moonta 6.7, Cougars 3.5. Whoever coined the phrase “the third term is the premiership quarter” obviously knew what they were talking about! By the time the

Cats scored a point — 13 minutes into the term — the Dees had added 5.3 and the game was over. Three-quarter time: Moonta 12.11, CY Cougars 3.9. Henry Bruhn kicked the first goal for Moonta, Freddy Agius followed a minute later. In total, Moonta kicked seven last-term goals to the Cougars’ one. Moonta’s first B grade flag

since 2009 came with 93 points to spare, 19.13 (127) to 4.10 (34), the largest margin in a B grade grand final since 1995 when CMS belted Kadina by 103 points. Watson, Wanganeen and Agius inflicted most of the damage for Moonta, and Jon Dutschke got a few kicks at centre half-back for CY Cougars. Moonta’s Tim Bagnall was named best on ground.

History-making win for Bute/Pasky Kenn ROGERS REPORT BY

After winning the last two minor round games just to make the finals, Bute/ Paskeville senior colts took the momentum all the way to a history-making premiership win against Moonta. Carrying on from the previous week’s brilliant win, the Saints had the play all day, particularly after the first quarter. Goals came from Harry Simpson and Sam Taylor, along with two points. Moonta was well served with goals from Cameron and Harrison Platten. From then on, the Saints controlled the game with

Taylor standing tall and finishing the game with five goals. Mitchell Larsson, Corey Price and Matt Correll played well and did not let the Moonta boys have any chance of scoring, Saints holding Moonta scoreless in the second quarter and nearly scoreless in the fourth. Late in the second term, Saints’ Luke McCauley was stretchered from the ground after a heavy clash, the second casualty for the day. Passages of brilliant play by both sides from one end of the ground to the other were the order of the day and had the big crowd cheering their sides on.

Riley Hatcher played well for Moonta, along with Riley Williams, Scott Francis, Troy Daly and H Platten, but they could not withstand the Saints’ pressure. At the final change, the Saints were well on the way to a good win, leading 7.3 to 4.3. The Saints’ winning margin could have been bigger had they kicked more accurately in the final term, scoring three goals and five behinds. A goal within one minute by Larsson gave them a lift but this was followed by five behinds in a row before Larsson and Simpson sealed the game with good goals.

Moonta wins in close contest Kenn ROGERS REPORT BY

The young guns of football from Moonta and the CMS Crows kicked off grand final day at Maitland in ideal sunny weather. Crows won the toss and kicked to the southern end with a very slight breeze but only managed three behinds to Moonta’s 1.1. Jackson Zwar played well for Moonta along with Ryley Paulsen and Jamahl Harradine to keep the Crow defenders under pressure. In the second term the Crows fought hard but were unable to make amends for first quarter mistakes in front of goal. Tyson McSkimming scored the Crows’ first goal at

the 11 minute mark and the side was within touch until Corey Angie booted Moonta’s only goal for the quarter. Halftime: Moonta 2.4 to Crows 1.3. Declan Knibbs played well for Moonta and Harradine gave the Crow defenders a headache in a tight game. The ruck duels were very even with Brinn Stanitzki just ahead of his direct opponent but Zwar was devastating in the centre of the ground. During the third term some of the best football was played by both sides and the big crowd applauded the style of play. Oliver Mullins and Paulsen played well for Moonta as did the mosquito fleet of the Crows. Ethan McDonnell and Max Litster showed good

form so did Aidan Turner for Moonta. Scores were even in the third, with Moonta kicking 2.3 and Crows 2.1 to put scores heading into the break 4.5 to 3.4 McDonnell set the scene for a Crow comeback as he kicked the opening goal. This was followed by one from James Way, putting the Crows in front by five points at the 10-minute mark. But Harradine scored a goal, which was followed by a touched point, to give the Demons a two-point lead. Play was hard and tough — more like A grade football — resulting in Moonta’s Sam Barker being carried from the field following a head clash. The Crows had the opportunity to snare a win but this

was not to be, with a play for a goal touched on the line, giving Moonta a one-point lead. The crowd was at fever pitch as the minutes ticked away. Shaun McNeilly had played well but was not the damaging influence of last week and had the opportunity to goal, as well as Ethan

Cleland, but unfortunately each scored a point. The game closed in on a draw with only minutes to go when a kick in headed toward Harradine; he scored a point on the siren, giving Moonta the flag by the barest of margins. I gave my best to Turner for Moonta and Stanitzki for Crows.

A GRADE CMS Crows v CY Cougars Cougars opened with the centre pass but a turnover through a contact call on Cougars GS Sasha Glasgow gave Crows an early twogoal advantage. Cougars equalised through a rebound by GK Joanne Davey. Cougars GD Lucy Taheny rebounded well against the height of Crows GS Jess Cocks. Scores levelled at five-all. Glasgow sisters Isabelle (GA) and Sasha rebounded strongly but lost possession through a short pass. Crows GA Lucy Short continued to be a strong option, driving to the post, and CMS pulled away by two. CMS went into the first break with a one-goal lead, 12-11 Cougars quickly scored through I Glasgow. After multiple turnovers, Crows scored their opening goal of the quarter through Cocks, who shot the next two. Despite being double-teamed, S Glasgow broke free to score. Time was held after S Glasgow went down with a leg injury; she recovered for play to continue. Crows GK Sallyann Vivian continued to make S Glasgow work hard. Goals were scored with respective centre passes. In strong play, Crows broke away to go into halftime with a four-goal lead, 25-21. Cougars brought Chelsea Koch on to WD, Tamika Mackereth moving into C and Alix Stanton to WA. Both teams scored quickly off their respective centres, before Cougars capitalised on a wayward pass to Cocks. A series of stepping calls to both teams meant play seesawed but CMS recovered their four-goal lead. An injury time to CMS C Amanda Pitt allowed players to catch their breath in warm weather. CMS extended their lead to six.

D GRADE Southern Eagles 33 d Moonta 29. Brittany Hancock, Southern Eagles. E GRADE CMS Crows 59 d Moonta 24. Melissa McSkimming, CMS Crows. F GRADE CY Cougars 34 d Moonta 28. Ilea Frensch, CY Cougars. G GRADE Moonta 18 d CY Cougars 15. Emma Prout, Moonta.

I Glasgow worked hard to combat the double team on younger sister Sasha. A finger-tip touch from I Glasgow on the CMS centre pass resulted in a Cougars goal; another turnover from a breaking call led to a Cougars goal scored on the siren. Crows went into the last break with a three-goal advantage, 39-36. Crows had the centre pass. Play seesawed before Pitt scrummed the ball for Crows to score through Cocks. Crows pushed to a four-goal lead, Short’s steady hands continuing to be accurate at goal. An intercept by Mackereth resulted in her team scoring. Injury time was held for Lana Bennett as Cougars gained momentum, clawing back the deficit to two, 45-47. Under pressure, Pitt stepped in the centre third, and the penalty was advanced after undisciplined play. Scores levelled. Cougars scored on their centre pass. A contact call on the CMS WA turned the ball to Cougars. S Glasgow rebounded her missed goal to score. Cougars scored off their centre, increasing their lead to three. CMS had a penalty pass advanced to the top of their goal circle and a goal resulted. As the scorer rose, Cougars missed a goal to be rebounded by I Glasgow, who scored on the final whistle. CY Cougars won the 2015 YPNA A grade premiership 54-51, with Isabelle Glasgow best on court.

B GRADE CMS Crows vs Southern Eagles Crows and Eagles had close tussles all season and the grand final was sure to be a physical match. Eagles won the toss and made it count with a quick score; Crows responded immediately. CMS GS Sasha McSkimming held well in the circle for Crows but Eagles GK Hannah Sanders made her earn every pass.

❚ YPNA A GRADE... Sasha Glasgow, CY Cougars, and Sallyann Vivian, CMS Crows, fight for possession. 8 GRAND FINAL LIFTOUT Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Crows were desperate for every ball and, with S McSkimming’s height and Gaye Jolly’s experience, they flew ahead, scoring several goals in a row. Blood rule for Eagles C Josie Rudduck allowed Eagles to make a change. Alanna Barrand came on into GS and moved well, but the Eagles just couldn’t catch their rivals. Quarter time: Crows 13, Eagles 5. Crows’ midcourt players moved the ball down the court beautifully. Eagles GD Rikki Barlow-Gill drove down the court well and got the ball moving for her team. Eagles had to work hard to get the ball into their goalies with Crows GK Chelsea Biddell causing plenty of grief for her ex-teammates. Although the Eagles managed to reduce the damage, Crows had a convincing halftime lead, 23-15. Eagles put experienced Danielle Johns into GS. She sank her first goal and lifted her teammates. Crows midcourt players WD Katie Hocking and C Jess Liddiard moved the ball out of defence effectively for their team. Eagles WD Steph O’Brien stepped up as captain and managed three crucial intercepts for her team, having a brilliant third quarter. This wasn’t enough though and the Crows kept charging ahead, scores 32-21 at three-quarter time. Eagles refused to give up, showing the spirit that had made them so successful all season. Crows GK Rebecca McSkimming read the ball well and managed plenty of turnovers for her team. Eagles WA Carly McInerney worked the pocket to perfection and her goalies moved well and shot accurately. It wasn’t enough though, Crows clipping Eagles’ wings 42-29.

C GRADE CMS Crows v Southern Eagles Crows opened with the first centre pass and had a shot at goal; it was a miss, Eagles turned the ball over and scored. Eagles shooters Skye Barlow-Gill and Brooke Wenzel worked well together in the goal circle while CMS defenders Lee Blyth, Jorja Warwick and Imogen McDonnell pushed hard. Crows fumbled in the first quarter, nerves evident. In contrast, Eagles held great position and defence all the way down the court. Quarter time: Eagles 11, Crows 7. After strong pep talks from coaches at the break, players came out ready to fight for the premiership. Eagles’ play was direct and fast-paced in the second quarter; but Crows didn’t make enough space for good play. As the Crows

settled, they put pressure on the Eagles and Eagles began to make unforced errors. Crows C Kristen Wilson pushed hard, matched well by Eagles C Jacinta van Rysingen. In a much closer quarter, Eagles scored eight goals to the Crows’ seven, bringing the halftime scores to 19-14. Eagles rested van Rysingen and brought on Brittney Hendry in her place. Rebecca Barlow took a break from WD with Jasmine Wilkinson coming on for her. Crows rested shooter Jess Walsh and brought on Molly Campion to the position. Eagles seized the opportunity from Crows’ poor passing, turning the ball over to score a number of times. Eagles’ defence was hot, making it difficult for Crows all over the court. Crows called an injury time for captain and WA Megan Wildash, who has battled with knee problems all season. Young gun Tyla Cook was brought into C while Wilson moved into WA. In another relatively low-scoring quarter for the Crows, the Eagles maintained their lead with 11 goals to Crows’ six, making it 30-20. With a 10-goal deficit, Crows were going to have to work hard to catch the Eagles. Crows brought Wildash back on to WA and rested Wilson. Eagles scored the first goal and further stretched their lead. With accurate shooting from Eagles, Crows couldn’t match it with a number of missed shots from the goalies. While the Crows managed to maintain pace with the Eagles and keep up to their goals, it wasn’t enough to shrink the margin. At the final whistle, Eagles took out the premiership 40 goals to 29. Eagles played a notably great game and worked extremely well together as a team.

D GRADE Southern Eagles v Moonta Moonta began with the centre pass; the ball went up and down the court with goalies unable to find their range. Eagles finally scored the first goal but Moonta quickly broke the centre pass. Again, the ball travelled up and down the court before Eagles converted a turnover. Moonta settled with a goal, but Eagles returned with a goal of their own. Each team struggled to convert its centre passes. Eagles’ goalies struggled to find the ring, giving the Moonta defenders plenty of rebounding opportunities. Moonta scored off its own centre pass and, after much effort,

❚ YPNA B GRADE... Chelsea Biddell, CMS Crows, keeps the ball in play.

Eagles scored to level. Two quick goals from Moonta gave it a twogoal lead at the end of the first quarter, 7-5. Eagles had the first pass and, after many attempts, converted twice to level the scores. Eagles goalies continued to struggle with their accuracy and weren’t capitalising on their opportunities, keeping Moonta in the game. Two quick goals from Eagles gave them a two-goal lead and Moonta called injury time as the lead stretched to three. Moonta returned to the court and quickly scored with the Eagles going into the halftime break two goals in the clear, 14-12. Moonta changed its WD and scored two quick goals to level the scores. Eagles regained the lead with strong defensive rebounding but Moonta answered this. As in the first half, each team struggled to convert its own centre passes. Against the flow, Moonta converted to edge in front and a quick conversion of a rebound created a two-goal lead. With the lead back to one, Moonta called an injury time. A new centre was brought on, and Eagles levelled the scores on return to the court. Injury time was called for Eagles as Moonta scored to get back into the lead. Both teams were let down by poor passing. Eagles drew level but inaccurate shooting let the side down. Moonta scored on the whistle to finish the quarter one goal up, 21-20. Tahlia Congdon returned to C for Moonta. Eagles quickly scored to level and strong defending enabled them to hit the front. Moonta settled with a score off its own centre pass but Eagles put their foot down and defended hard to draw five goals in front as Moonta began to make mistakes through the middle. Moonta scored against the flow, converting three quick goals. A goal from Eagles and their lead was back at three. Moonta called an injury time as the warm weather began to take its toll. Eagles settled with the lead out to four, which was maintained until the final whistle. Final scores: Eagles 33, Moonta 29.

E GRADE CMS Crows v Moonta Crows had dominated E grade all season with an impressive team that worked together well. Crows took the first centre pass, the first goal of the match shot by GS Tahlia Cleland. Moonta goalies Madelyn Keast and Kelsie Woods made good movement around the

goal circle and worked well as a combination. Hot on their defence were Crows captain GD Melissa McSkimming and GK Rhiannon McDonnell. Crows C Tyla Cook and WA Hannah Noonan fed well into the goalies. Moonta WA Jaimi Tabb created space down the court for her goalies; however, a penalty against her meant a turnover for Crows which resulted in a goal. At the end of the first quarter, Crows led 12-6. While Moonta started with the first centre pass, Crows turned it over and scored. Crows had a scoring streak with three goals in a row. Moonta GK Jasmine Crocker and GD Kara Hackett were pushed to their limits, doing their best to slow the onslaught. At the other end of the court, McSkimming intercepted Moonta’s passes impressively, resulting in further goals for Crows. At the halftime whistle, Crows led 31-13. Moonta made some major changes heading into the third quarter. Tabb was moved from WA to C, Claudia Hatcher from C to GD, Crocker from GK to WD, Keast from GS to GA, Woods from GA to GS and Kate Prout was rested from WD with Mackenzie Weltman brought on to WA. Crows rested only McDonnell from GK and brought on Keely Oliver in her place. The quarter started and Crows maintained their winning play with both Cleland and GA Tasmyn Biddell shooting with impressive accuracy. Moonta just couldn’t keep up with Crows in attack or defence, with a number of Crows intercepts resulting in goals. Injury time was called for Moonta, with Woods resting from GS, Weltman going into her position and Prout brought back on to WA. Crows put in 14 goals for the quarter compared with Moonta’s five, taking the overall scores to Crows 45, Moonta 18. Crows brought Isla Hickman on to WD and Bella Campion to GA, with Biddell, Noonan and Liliana Alafaci taking a rest. Campion shot well in GA. Time was held for an ankle injury for Crows GD McSkimming; however, she continued on court. Hickman defended well in WD for Crows and Keast worked the circle well in GA for Moonta. With 14 goals scored for Crows and only six for Moonta in the last quarter, scores at the final whistle were a huge 59 for Crows to 24 for Moonta; Crows’ McSkimming was named best on court.

CY Cougars v Moonta Moonta started with the first centre pass and scored with a fabulous long shot from Abby Prout. Cougars quickly replied and, after a Moonta mistake in the goal circle, they scored again. Cougars’ defenders put a lot of pressure on the shot, with Moonta having to work the circle hard to get to the post. Cougars attack fed well into its taller goalies who shot well. Cougars opened up a handy lead at the end of the first quarter, 13-6. Cougars began with the centre pass but turned over the ball to give Moonta the first goal. The intensity from both teams increased, causing mistakes. Moonta settled with a goal off its centre pass. Defenders at both ends put a lot of pressure on the goalies. Scoring slowed for both teams until Moonta scored three goals in a row to bring the margin back to five. The ball went up and down the court with all goalies missing chances. Moonta was the first to score and then converted its centre pass and the margin shortened to three. Moonta scored off Cougars’ centre pass and Cougars went into the halftime break two goals in front, 16-14. Cougars made some changes while Moonta remained the same to start the second half. Moonta converted its first centre pass but wasn’t able to capitalise when great defensive work caused a turnover and Cougars converted their own centre pass. Cougars settled with great shooting from Ella Davey to keep their nose in front. Tough rebounding by Cougars gave their goalies another chance which they converted. Moonta worked hard to keep in touch but Cougars had settled to a lead of six.

Moonta called an injury time but Cougars scored on return to the court and the lead began to stretch out as Moonta appeared to tire. Cougars were in the lead by eight at three-quarter time, 27-19. Cougars started with the first centre pass but an intercept from Moonta’s Olivia Congdon enabled Moonta to score first and then quickly converted its own centre pass. Cougars settled with a goal and another on a turnover. Moonta stemmed the tide, scoring off Cougars’ centre pass. Moonta had to work hard to score off its own pass with Cougars finding it a little easier. After a turnover from Cougars’ goalies, Moonta brought the margin back to five but Cougars quickly got a goal back. Strong work from Cougars stretched the lead back to eight. Moonta kept working hard and got the deficit back to six but time ran out and Cougars took the flag, 34-28.

G GRADE CY Cougars v Moonta Cougars started with the centre pass and both teams came out fighting. Cougars had to move well to get free of their players. After the ball going back and forth for some time, Cougars GA Hilary Longstaff shot the first goal. Moonta then quickly responded with its only goal for the quarter. Goals were hard to come by with great defensive pressure from both teams. Havanah Smith and Mia Whittaker both drove hard through the centre court for Cougars. Scores at the end of the first quarter: Cougars 4, Moonta 1. Moonta made a great start to the second quarter, scoring the first four goals with strong attacking play by Moonta WA Zoe Furniss and C Amber Aldridge. Moonta goalies Emma Prout and Kirra

❚ YPNA G GRADE... Hazel Bittner, CY Cougars, takes the penalty pass, whilst Amber Aldridge, Moonta, stands out for contact.

Hettner made the most of intercepting passes out from their attacking end and combined well in the circle. Loose footwork also created opportunities for both teams but Moonta capitalised, gaining more confidence in their play. At the end of the second quarter: Cougars 6, Moonta 7. Moonta came out determined in the third quarter with only one change bringing Mackenzie Jones on as GS. Cougars brought Annabel Whittaker on at WD and Sophie Baker at WA. Smith moved to GA, Emma Rowe back to GK and Whittaker into C. Moonta scored the first two goals in this quarter. Hazel Bittner and Emma Rowe worked hard for Cougars, creating turnovers which helped with the next four goals for Cougars, with Georgia Hasting starting to find space in the goal circle; Cougars 12, Moonta 12. Again Moonta made a great start to the fourth quarter by getting the first goal from its centre pass. Excellent defence by GD Brooke Irlam and GK Emily Jolly made it difficult for Cougars and intercepted the ball coming into attack from their centre pass, resulting in another goal for Moonta. Cougars worked hard and created space, enabling them to get three goals. Halfway through the last quarter it was 15-all. Moonta responded with three quick goals with great shooting from Prout and strong rebounding from Moonta’s defence creating turnovers. Moonta won a tight game by three goals: Moonta 18, Cougars 15. Well done to all girls, it was a well-contested match. Best on court was awarded to Moonta GA Emily Prout who shot beautifully.
