Patrons were treated to a magnificent game of football when they came to watch Southern Eagles face CMS Crows for the 2019 Yorke Peninsula Football League A grade premiership in warm, sunny weather at a packed Wallaroo oval on Saturday. Skills were high from the outset and one wondered if the Crows could emulate their efforts of the week before when they completely demolished a weakened Paskeville Magpies outfit. The game started at a frenetic pace. Crow Liam Cocks displayed early momentum and Eagle Luke McMahon ran like the wind. Suddenly Todd Button appeared, Ben Edwards marked and kicked Crows’ first major. Teejay Halkias gathered and kicked forward for the Eagles. Crow Josh Hoyle intercepted and found Angus Glazbrook, then it was Edwards who had possession, then Jarryn Male. The energy this game exuded was unbelievable, one thought it would have to slow down soon, but it didn’t and this masterly contest between two amazingly skilful teams continued for the duration. Jacob Pedler slotted the Eagles’ first after a pass from Bradley Robertson. Then it was Halkias’s turn again on the southern wing and his run and impeccable delivery enabled Scott Mumford to soccer one through. Steven Warrior was just that in defence for Crows, and Eagle Matthew Taylor and Crow Ryley Newbold were involved in an outstanding rucking contest. McMahon was having a blinder, displaying skill in all departments. He marked, ran and delivered beautifully and his smother on fast-moving Eagle Tom Babidge’s boot epitomised the enormous influence he had on the game. Nik Seccafien and Michael Eichner also started well for Eagles. Robertson ran and kicked truly, and Eagles led by 11 points. Crow Lachlan Varricchio managed a couple of touches at the start of the second and Glazbrook showed pace, but Jack Barlow’s pass to Taylor was good and led to Eagles’ fourth! Kieran Smith’s tackle on Robertson was a pearler and Craig Fitzgerald kicked one for

the Crows. Edwards dropped a sitter and the Eagles were off, but Crow Murphy Short decided to get in on the action, storming forward, enabling Edwards to mark and goal. Charlie Litster booted the Crows’ fourth after good play from Lachlan Pointon and it was four goals apiece. Luke Hoare and Edwards each kicked another for their respective sides and Crows led by two points at halftime. It was the Pedler show straight after the long break; he kicked two goals in no time and the Eagles looked to be running rampant. Babbage gathered a loose ball and kicked to Edwards who kicked his fourth, and Crows’ sixth. Glazbrook snapped truly and the gallant Crows maintained their twopoint lead at three-quarter time. Belying his youth, Max Litster gathered several telling possessions in defence for Crows. The fourth started with a Crows surge forward but a point resulted. Then Eagles gathered steam and attacked. Short was unable to subdue a fearless Taylor, who goaled. Mumford was rucking for Eagles now and made a difference. Jack Tape ran out of the forward 50; a high ball approached and he ran flat out, hoping to snare the ball in front of his opponent. Somehow he gathered brilliantly on the half volley, handballed to a running Robertson, and Robertson booted a beauty for Eagles! George Litster’s tackle on Joel Tilbrook was strong but the Eagles appeared to be weathering the storm. Taylor marked strongly, then Cocks did the same for the Crows. Suddenly Tape marked well and goaled. In resolute fashion, Hoyle propelled the Sherrin towards the Crow forwards; the audacious Robertson captured it in a flash, evaded three tackles and gave it to McMahon. McMahon ran and ran and goaled to complete a wonderful passage of play for Eagles. Will Murdoch marked in a contest with Edwards late in the game, exemplifying the commitment exhibited by the Southern Eagles, and they were home and hosed. This was indeed a remarkable grand final. Matthew Taylor was named best on ground.

Southern Eagles slowly ground their way to the 2019 Yorke Peninsula Football League B grade premiership over a disappointing Paskeville at the warm Wallaroo oval on Saturday, September 14. Magpie Phillip Pridham tapped to Jack Davies, who was tackled. Eagle Kyle Hoare gathered and kicked to Kyran Hancock but a point resulted. Paskeville attacked through P Pridham, Brendan Ramsey ran, Marty Daniel showed strength and Ashley Pridham was good too. But their team’s forward advances were blocked by the boys from the south; alas, the Eagles were unable do much either. Nick Perry started a Magpie forward move and big Leighton Wilksch connected with Hamish Price, this passage looking promising! M Daniel showed skill but his snap was offline. Damien Rowe set up the Eagles’ first goal, kicked by a running Blake Gutsche, then Stuart O’Brien marked and kicked a long point. The north-westerly breeze seemed to strengthen slightly, and Paskeville was the beneficiary of this in quarter two. M Daniel lined up in the ruck and was loving the contest; however, Tim Daniell was strong out of defence and his long drop punt was gold. Dylan Gutsche gathered, bounced and goaled. T Daniell to Luke Liddiard was exquisite and Cody Barlow-Gill took a strong mark, but Price intercepted and kicked to Benjamin Davies. A long kick by Leyhton Hann was out on the full for Paskeville.

His was the first of three by his team in a short period, then a perfect tap by Wilksch was taken by Perry, his snap offline. It had been such a frustrating half for the Magpies; their total ball possession had been much more than the Eagles and yet the scoreboard showed otherwise. Paskeville started with style in the third. Gavin Bussenschutt to Reiley Barnett to James Davis, but the result was another behind. Eagle Blake Gutsche tried too hard and Magpie Peter Stapleton tackled him with ferocity. The Magpies went again but scoring opportunities slowed markedly as T Daniell’s defensive tenacity increased; he read the play beautifully. Barlow-Gill’s confidence rose, and Josh Pippen-Edwards was noticeable. One point was scored for the entire quarter; patrons were not being treated to a great spectacle. A great tackle by M Daniel on Kyle Hoare was rewarded and B Gutsche read it well but O’Brien’s kick sailed over the southern boundary. Pasky attacked again and it was Sam Taheny’s turn to repel. Eagles attacked with belief and somehow Liddiard found the ball and snapped truly. Pippen-Edwards was on M Daniel, nullifying the latter’s dominance, and Pippen-Edwards’ super smother was a gem. It appeared the Eagles had gained an ascendancy and their northern counterparts could not stem the tide. Wade Tucker kicked a late goal and the flag was theirs. Best on ground was awarded to Josh Pippen-Edwards.

Kadina too strong against valiant Eagles “Tom Ruff” REPORT BY

Kadina and Southern Eagles contested the Yorke Peninsula Football League 2019 Senior Colts grand final at Wallaroo on Saturday. Kadina’s Jake Rawlinson started the first forward entry, Charlie Adams gathered but a point resulted. A Nathan Perkins tackle on Eagle Bernard William-Taheny was strong but the Bloods were inaccurate. Brodie Elefsen combined well with Blake Brunton for the Eagles. Tom Davies collected, ran and bounced to slot a beauty. Tristan Russell and Fred Bornholm also provided run. Kadina responded early in the second after an Eagles forward foray in which a snap by Koby Poulton just missed. William Neumann and Taj Kleinig defended desperately, and Neumann’s long kick was marked by Matthew Borlace. Perkins popped up and kicked a goal, then another after good play by Thomas Paddick. Khalid Shaid snapped truly for Kadina and the Eagles seemed rattled. Then the skilful James Reuther kicked one against the tide to bring the margin back to nine points at the

long break. Kadina player Ethan Kirley was hurt in a tackle but could walk off the ground. The Bloods were defiant and Jordan Cunningham snapped truly from 40 after a great grab by Neumann, who was having a sensational day. He didn’t stop running and inspired his teammates on numerous occasions with his energy and continual desire. Jack Rowntree could only manage a point after an enormous tackle on Jordan Tilbrook after the latter had played on when kicking out. Shaid kicked a late goal for Kadina; Eagles hadn’t scored for the quarter. Adams was strong early in the fourth, and he and Neumann combined with Shaid; their efforts resulted in a point. Then Tilbrook to Reuther was special for Eagles, Davies marked and goaled. Russell ran and Andrew Daniell was desperate. But Kadina was not going to let this one slip. Caleb Kemenyvary laid a super tackle on Poulton, Perkins presented and kicked his third. The northerners were just too good after an even first half and thoroughly deserved their grand final victory. Best on ground was Charlie Adams.

It was a beautiful 17 degrees Celsius and a slight breeze blew across the ground when CY Cougars met CMS Crows in the Yorke Peninsula Football League 2019 Junior Colts grand final at sunny Wallaroo on Saturday, September 14. Cougars’ ruckman Thomas Luck v Crows’ Jacob Hickman was a significant contest early. Edward Sansbury passed to Will Davey who in turn found Zac Dutschke but a point resulted for Cougars. Sherlyn Marshall kicked the Crows out of defence but Riley Davey intercepted and Zac Jarrett helped Brad Barnes kick the Cougars’ first goal, a long kick from the boundary. Twice, Crows got close to their forward 50, Harvey Gardner providing some drive but each time the Cougars, led by R Davey and Jett Hasting, defended with fine teamwork. Crows, led by Rory Hackett and J Hickman, started well in the second and Amelia Parsons gathered and goaled. The southerners were desperate, Hackett ran, and Luke Horn and Kayne Ormsby fought like tigers. Ailin Marshall was desperate too. Their efforts helped their team to completely halt every Cougar attack except one, a point to Sansbury. Cougars led by four points at halftime, but Crows led the momentum. Thomas Triplett marked early in the third for Cougars, passed to Rupert Polkinghorne who handballed to Jarrett. Barnes slipped forward and kicked to Harry Hollams, who goaled. J Hickman to Hackett was slick for Crows, but Hasting pounced, gave the

Not to be outdone, Crows went forward, Christian Reade was brave in a contest allowing Jonathan Wimpenny to kick a long goal. William May’s kick towards goal was well marked by K Ormsby, then Luck took a strong pack mark and goaled for the Cougars. Their lead was extended to 16 points at the last break. Barnes and R Davey led the way for Cougars early in the fourth, and goals to Kane Elliott-Karpany and Jackson Davies put the result beyond doubt. This game was hard fought and a wonderful display by two eager teams. A great start for grand final day. Best on ground was Jett Hasting.

A Grade CMS Crows v Moonta The temperature had soared to 27 degrees by the time the A grade began. Moonta won the first centre pass, but Crows centre Felicity Kemp got a fingertip to the pass and straight away Crows scored. The next couple of minutes provided some nervous stray passes and missed shots at both ends of the court. The pressure in Crows’ defensive third from GK Lauren McSkimming, GD Melissa McSkimming, WD Lana Bennett and Kemp forced Moonta to pass the ball around patiently waiting for the right opportunity to get it into the goal circle. Moonta GD Adele Keleher and GK Alex Prokopec were very close in their attention to Crows GS Sasha McSkimming and GA Bronwyn Farrow, resulting in missed shots. WD Libby Adams worked hard to bring the ball back down to her attacking end. L McSkimming caused headaches for Moonta GS Tamara Lodge and GA Alicia Cross, reading the play, cutting off passes and providing back up when needed. After a scrappy first quarter, Crows led 12-10. Crows began the second with the centre pass but found themselves heavily congested trying to get the ball into the goal circle. Prokopec tipped the ball and Moonta turned it over and scored. Many shots were put up by both teams, but Moonta was more accurate and took a slight lead. Moonta WD Bella Congdon covered Crows WA Tyla Cook effectively, both working to settle their respective team’s performance. Kemp and Moonta centre Claudia Hatcher were having a great battle. Kemp took an amazing intercept on Moonta’s goal line and Crows worked the ball down for a goal to get back within one. Halftime: Moonta 23, Crows 22. Moonta drew its lead out to three before Crows scored in the third quarter. Moonta WA Lucy Prior battled hard with Bennett all day, rarely receiving any easy passes but managing to have an impact when needed. The match went goal for goal for some minutes. Hatcher and Congdon were making it difficult for Crows to get the ball into their goal circle. Moonta capitalised on this and at three-quarter time had extended its lead to five, 36-31. Crows made changes at this break. Isabella Varricchio came on at GA and Rebecca Harris at GK, with L McSkimming moving out to GD. Crows had the first centre pass and, after a hard-fought contest, managed to score. Crows settled in attack quickly

and picked up two more goals. Cook and Kemp seemed to have more room and flow in their game and Varricchio shot accurately. Moonta continued its effective goal circle work with Lodge circling the circle’s outer edges providing a screen for Cross who held strongly closer to the post. It didn’t matter which shooter the ball ended up with, both missed rarely, Moonta taking the win 47-39. Best on court: Tamara Lodge, Moonta.

B Grade Ardrossan v CMS Crows Ardrossan GD Lizzie Cane intercepted the CMS Crows centre pass, and Ardrossan scored the first goal. In hot weather, nothing stopped Crows WD Hannah Warwick’s great defence down the court. Crows’ goalies had great strong holds and didn’t miss a shot. The sun shining, both teams put 100 per cent into the game. Quarter time: CMS Crows 14, Ardrossan 9. No changes were made for the second quarter. Crows GD Rebecca McSkimming picked up every loose ball as Ardrossan looked tired and Crows capitalised on all the little mistakes. Centres Meg Rowntree, Ardrossan, and Ballie Trenwith, Crows, both got in touch with loose balls. Halftime: CMS Crows 25, Ardrossan 19. Crows put Isabelle Varricchio into WA. After a good chat at halftime Ardrossan stepped up the game with GD Cane getting strong rebounds but Crows picked up Ardrossan’s attack end with a lot of pressure. Three-quarter time: CMS Crows 36, Ardrossan 29. Ardrossan put Hannah Clift into WD, Rowntree in WA and Shekia Bockmann in centre, and Crows moved Erin Cock back into WA. Ardrossan started with the centre pass and Madeline Kuhndt converted. With both teams applying pressure, great movement by Crows’ goalies and the hot weather, it was a hard quarter for both teams. Final scores: CMS Crows 45, Ardrossan 39. Best on court: Jacqui Baillie, CMS Crows.

Crows’ turnovers were quick and precise, and shooting was on point, Crows leading 35-26 at three-quarter time. Eagles fought hard to regain the lead but Crows were the stronger team defeating Eagles 43-36. Best on court: Breeana McNeilly, CMS Crows.

D Grade Wallaroo v CMS Crows CMS Crows started with the centre pass; GS Mellanie Reppin shot first and scored. Wallaroo missed its first opportunity to score, being out-rebounded by GK Jessica Reppin, and Crows capitalised on the turnover. Crows had scored four goals before Wallaroo settled with WA Pauline Marner feeding well into the circle and GA Lynelle Bodie getting her eye in on the ring. There were multiple turnovers from both teams and it took some time for the next score. Crows GD Madeleine Germein had to come off with the blood rule. Crows scored off their centre pass with great movement from GA M Reppin. Quarter time: Wallaroo 9, Crows 11 Wallaroo scored the first goal of the quarter, GS Jo Dawkins was a good option leading out of the circle and working the ball back in to her advantage. The pressure coming from Crows’ midcourt created multiple turnovers and GS Chantelle Castellon finished off nicely. The scores blew out, Crows leading by eight. Wallaroo GD Jessica Niotis picked off some nice intercepts, GK Rikki Kirley won some rebounds and, with the shooters regaining confidence, Wallaroo had closed the gap to five at halftime: CMS Crows 26, Wallaroo 21. Wallaroo had the pass and scored. Crows’ defenders got some easy intercepts around the circle’s edge and Liliana Alafaci was key to moving the ball through the midcourt, helping her team blow out the margin to 10. Both teams were aggressive for the ball, keeping the turnovers coming. Wallaroo WD Megan Liddy had some great deflects in the centre third, tapping to Wallaroo’s advantage and boosting her team’s momentum; passing in the goal third also improved. Three-quarter time: Crows 36 d Wallaroo 30. Crows kept coming in the last quarter, moving well and leading strongly. WA Tayla Bedding was quick over the ball but before she had her distance, leading to a caution for continuous obstruction. This allowed Wallaroo to have the extra player in the centre third. Wallaroo goalies missed and rebounded multiple times before GA Bodie scored with a trick shot on the back line. Four minutes to go and the scores were even, but some silly passes and missed goals let Crows have a last minute dash. Final scores: CMS Crows 44, Wallaroo 39. Best on court: Liliana Alafaci, CMS Crows.

C Grade E Grade Southern Eagles v CMS Crows The game started strongly with even attack and defence for Southern Eagles and CMS Crows. Eagles settled, and led 12-9 at quarter time. Eagles displayed great shooting and teamwork down the court, but Crows managed to take the lead at halftime: CMS Crows 22, Southern Eagles 20.

Moonta v CY Cougars It was a beautiful day at Wallaroo for Moonta and CY Cougars to fight it out for the E grade premiership. Cougars started with the centre pass and scored confidently through goalies Latoya Humes and Hilary Longstaff. Moonta followed suit and scored with great drive down the court. It

was a great first quarter by both teams. Quarter time: Moonta 12, CY Cougars 11. Both teams came back out on court with fierce determination, which resulted in a great tussle. Moonta WD Mariah Forth and Cougars WA Bethany Hollams were hard at the ball. Cougars’ defence was tight, resulting in a few held balls at Moonta’s attack end. Halftime: CY Cougars 26, Moonta 24. Moonta came out fighting and created some great turnovers, giving hardworking goalies Brooke Irlam and Emma Prout opportunities to score well. Moonta had the lead but for the remainder of the quarter it was goal for goal, providing a ripper of a game for the large crowd. Three-quarter time: Moonta 43, Cougars 39. Cougars’ ever-reliable centre Havanah Smith started with the ball and Cougars scored. Moonta’s strong defence over every ball caused Cougars to make silly mistakes but, by no time, the scores were back to even. The intense display of netball provided a great atmosphere. Both teams fought their hearts out, Moonta creating a turnover in the last seconds to cement its lead by two and take home the flag. Final scores: Moonta 54, Cougars 52. Best on court: Mariah Forth, Moonta.

z YPNA B GRADE… Madeline Kuhndt, Ardrossan, gets hands to the ball before Hannah Short, CMS Crows.

F Grade Kadina v CY Cougars Cougars started with the centre pass and scored the first goal. Both sides kept the pressure on, allowing plenty of room for mistakes. Kadina achieved a few turnovers throughout the quarter. With Kadina’s attack working together well, the side managed to get ahead of Cougars. Quarter time: Kadina 11, Cougars 2. Kadina scored the first goal of the second quarter. Cougars’ GD made some well-needed rebounds and intercepts, but tight defence from Kadina’s midcourt resulted in multiple turnovers. Cougars’ GA scored an impressive goal from halfway in the circle. Halftime: Kadina 17, Cougars 7. Kadina made a change in the third quarter, bringing on Olivia Brook into WA. Cougars were doing well, making an intercept that resulted in a goal and then three more goals in a row. Kadina was a little rattled but maintained its strong determination. Three-quarter time: Kadina 26, Cougars 12. Cougars changed every position on the court in a last-ditch effort, hoping to close the gap. Kadina defenders Alice Schultz and Meg Day worked well and made all the rebounds in Cougars’ circle. The last bursts of energy came into play with a faster pace on the court from both teams. Cougars GA scored a magnificent goal from the top of the circle. Final scores: Kadina 32, Cougars 24. Best on court: Meg Day, Kadina.

G Grade CY Cougars v Moonta The G grade grand final between CY Cougars and Moonta was set to be a thriller, underdog Moonta yet to defeat the strong Cougars side this season. The sun

z YPNA D GRADE… Mellanie Reppin, CMS Crows, lines up a shot at goal. was out in full blare for the junior players, creating hot weather to play in. Cougars started with the centre pass, but Moonta’s defensive pressure caused the first turnover. Moonta’s attacking line-up was unable to capitalise on the turnover as Cougars’ Summer Davies took an intercept and her team scored the first goal. The ball travelled back and forth down the court as Moonta’s Amelia Bugg and Cougars’ Davies intercepted and spoiled. This made for a close first quarter, Cougars leading 10 to Moonta 6 at the break. Moonta brought Holly Strawbridge into WD and moved Bugg to centre, and Cougars brought Madeleine Honner into WD. With great movement inside the circle from Moonta’s Hallie Koch and Madeline Forth, Maeve Cockshell delivered the ball beautifully into the goalies. Moonta’s Charlotte Keleher and Bree Williams intercepted many balls, but Cougars’ Marley Smith and Davies defended and attacked every ball, causing multiple turnovers, resulting in goals for Cougars. A tight and fast quarter had the halftime scores at Cougars 20, Moonta 18.

Cougars brought Maggie Moore into WD, Moonta was unchanged. Cougars started strongly with great movement from Annabel Geater-Johnson and Hayley Humes in the goal circle, resulting in a quick first goal. Moonta defenders Williams and Keleher continued to work hard and slow down the movement of the Cougars’ goalies, resulting in a couple turnovers. Koch and Forth shot accurately under pressure from tight defence by Daisy Jarret and Davies. Cougars went into the final quarter leading Moonta 29-25. Moonta brought Lucy Hancocks into WA and Sarah Griffin into centre. Cougars’ only change was bringing Honner back onto the court in WD. Hancocks started strongly with hard leads, attacking the ball at the centre pass. Cougars responded, taking intercepts all over the court, Smith leading her team fluently down the court attacking and defending every ball. Cougars’ goalies shot accurately all game, hardly missing. Cougars slowly broke away from Moonta. Final scores: CY Cougars 40, Moonta 28. Best on court: Marley Smith, CY Cougars.
