The final word from the coaches
Shaun Glacken Paskeville A Grade Coach
Paskeville finished top, took the first week of the finals off and then defeated Kadina to move straight through to this year’s grand final. It was a much different route than the Magpies took to last year’s surprise premiership. After finishing in fourth position at the end of the 2014 minor round, Paskeville required three victories — including one in extra time — just to make the grand final. This year the Magpies needed just one win. Coach Shaun Glacken said the lead in should have his players enter the grand final rested and injury free. “There will be no excuses this year,” Glacken said. “For us the season has gone to plan beautifully so far. “We threw the team around in the first half of the season, and then settled it in the second half. “We’ve been able to rest a lot of players and have them cherry ripe for the business end.” Now it will be up to the players if they want to claim back-to-back premierships. “We have been more consistent across the whole season than we were last year, when we started slowly,” Glacken said. “Basically we have had the same
team for three years, so that’s a real advantage. “The kids coming through have really stepped up to another level. “We have used the breaks to get some extra Ks in the legs on the track and will be looking for 21 contributors on Saturday.” Kadina has displayed good form in the finals, defeating Moonta twice and narrowly losing to Paskeville after suffering from inaccuracy in the first half. Its midfield of Josh Lawson, Waylon Johncock and the Bloods’ best player of the finals so far, Brett Burnell, is elite and often receives first use through dominant ruckman Jono Lee. This allows plenty of forward entries to Kadina’s key targets led by Willy Serle, who shook off his recent inaccuracy to boot eight goals in a match-winning performance in the prelim. But Glacken was tight lipped about his plans to combat Kadina, aside from saying Paskeville does have a plan. “Kadina has 21 quality players,” he said. “We shouldn’t be focusing on any one player because there are about a dozen you need to focus on.”
Ivan Silvy Kadina A Grade Coach
Ivan Silvy has led Kadina to a grand final appearance in his first year at the helm. This is despite arriving to a team which had fallen short of expectations in 2014, and also lost three classy midfielders including former AFL player Cameron Faulkner and Mail Medallist Craig Taylor. Expectations may have been lower for Kadina but nobody told the players, who played well all year and have been rewarded with a chance at a premiership. “For me the year has been fun — the season feels like it has gone too quickly,” Silvy said. “At the start of the year I was a bit worried to be honest. “I hadn’t met some of the boys, and I heard who had left, and I knew we had to find some quality players.” Silvy played a major role in recruiting Waylon Johncock from Glenelg after a couple of games, and in snagging Adam Cullen from Central District midway through the season. The pair added some class and dash to the Bloods, and Silvy is happy with how the side has now settled. “It has been pleasing how our fringe players have developed —
Markus Dunatov, Lachlan Glazbrook, Kane Zilm — they have all become reliable,” he said. “(Nick) Rawson normally gets a job and sacrifices his own game and hopefully he will get the job done again.” Kadina lost to Paskeville in the semifinal, and at Paskeville early in the year, but defeated the Magpies at Kadina. “I think we stand up alright against them,” Silvy said. “They have some pretty good boys, their Port Adelaide boys of course, but I think we match up okay. “It should be pretty even across the field. “We got the better of them at our ground but Pasky is probably better used to the smaller (Maitland) ground than we are.” Silvy will hope to field a full-strength side as Kadina has no serious injury concerns. The only doubt is with utility Luke Browning, who was reported twice during Saturday’s preliminary final. “I’m nervous for the boys,” Silvy said. “These guys have played together for a lot of years so I’m hoping the brotherhood-ness comes out in them and they do it for each other.”

Footy GF predictions “Half-back Flanker” REPORT BY
This is it, the big one. You can just feel the excitement building. If you can’t feel it you are possibly from the bottom end, Ardrossan or Wallaroo. Everyone else has a reason to cheer at Maitland on Saturday. Moonta fans have the most games to get excited about, three, but they can head home early because their side is not in the main event. Moonta went down against an impressive Kadina side but at least a bunch of those lads will get to play in the B grade this Saturday. More on that later, since the overlords have asked for predictions in all four grades. I told them here’s my prediction: the junior colts will be over before I’m up, I’ll shake off my hangover and find my wallet during the seniors, try to jump the Maitland fence during the B grade, spend the first quarter of the As working out who managed to sneak a carton in and then settle in for a big arvo of offering my expert advice to everyone within ear shot. A big news story leading into the grand final surrounds Kadina’s Luke Browning, who has put in a good season after playing B grade last year. Browning was reported twice and sent off against Moonta. The only other time I can remember that happening is, coincidentally, last year’s prelim final when Moonta’s Hayden Walker was sin binned. Surely Kadina will contest the report and try to get Browning a game in the grand final. Two things before I’m done. Congratulations to Mail Med allist Josh Lawson who had previously finished runner-up basically every year. About time he got some silverware. He will now lead his side into the grand final, but will they have what it takes? And finally thanks for reading all year. I haven’t always been right, and I haven’t always known what I was on about. But, boy, I have kept on writing anyways. Grand finals (at Maitland) JUNIOR COLTS Moonta v CMS Crows Moonta has been the form side of the past couple of months. The Dees rolled the Crows pretty easily in round 18 and then got the job done again
in the semifinal. The CMS Crows finished the season on top of the ladder and were too good for the Southern Eagles, who had defeated them earlier in the year. They have some tall players, as those bottom end sides always seem to, but their quick little fellas are the ones to watch. Players to watch will include league medallist Jackson Zwar and Braden Aldridge for the Dees and Lachlan Pointon and Fergus Agnew for the Crows. I think Moonta probably has more elite players at this level and will get the job done. At the final siren... Moonta by two goals. SENIOR COLTS Moonta v Bute/Paskeville This one will be interesting. In the first half of the season Bute/Paskeville didn’t look like much. In fact, Moonta pumped them when the sides first met. They have now come from fifth to make the grand final, winning every finals game with ease. Moonta wasn’t really the team to beat all year either, but rebounded from an average middle of the season to earn the double chance. They looked down and out against Wallaroo in the first final but came back to win, before winning straight through to the grand final against Kadina by a goal. Bute/Pasky then defeated Kadina by 10 goals. Players to watch: The lanky Riley Hatcher and imposing Bayden Cross for Moonta; Liam Martin (if he plays – he’ll be in the A grade final later) and Reiley Barnett for Bute/Pasky. At the final siren... Bute/Pasky by three goals. B GRADE CY Cougars v Moonta The Cougars haven’t put a foot wrong since early in the year and were always going to be the side to beat once their As were out of contention. Simon Wanganeen is the best forward outside of the A grade and his midfield was already one of the best before they all got moved to the flanks by genuine A graders like Todd Twelftree and Lyle Sansbury. Such is the depth of the Cougars, these blokes did play some Bs during the season. Moonta, with its A grade now out, is more of a wildcard. Freddy Agius (The Champ!) has given the Dees reserves an extra edge and he will be joined by
everyone possible outside of that top 18 – that is if Moonta wants a chance to win. Players to watch: the ones who played As all year. At the final siren... CY Cougars by four goals. A GRADE Paskeville v Kadina Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. The Magpies were good last year, but boy were they lucky in that grand final. The dominant CMS Crows were without Adam Pitt and Adam Jolly, then the ruckman was stretchered off before the opening bounce. This year the Magpies haven’t needed things to go their way. They have been top all year and have played like the reigning premiers they are (even if I still couldn’t bring myself to tip them at times). Kadina has looked like a genuine chance all year as well. The Bloods are a big side, but their little blokes are elite as well. They missed out on a couple of flags when the Crows were unbelievable, and then when the Crows were vulnerable they kicked themselves out of the finals. Which team benefitted from Kadina’s inaccuracy in that final? Paskeville. The match-ups here will be key. Pasky full back Nick Madden will have a great tussle with Willy Serle, and is ably supported by Tyson Wait. Martin Daniel will likely stand Kadina’s Geoff Munn or, if Munn goes back, Daniel Toole. In Pasky’s forward line the resting ruckman will possibly be the only bloke above six foot tall, so Ben McNicholl could go to him if Alex East is deemed to be better used against a smaller, more agile player. Kadina’s Jono Lee and Pasky’s Seth Matson are both giants in the ruck. Lee will likely win more taps than he loses, but Matson is more mobile around the ground. Mail Medallist Josh Lawson will be against runner-up Mark Dolling, whilst Waylon Johncock, for Kadina, will battle for clearances with Pasky captain Abraham Helfand. Maitland oval is pretty small like Pasky’s, if that makes a difference. It should be a cracker game and win or lose all the lads, like myself, will be indulging in a responsible tipple soon after it’s over. At the final siren... Paskeville by one goal.

Tipping the netball premiers “Squeaky Sneaker” REPORT BY
What a week of netball finals in the Yorke Peninsula Netball Association. Spectators were treated to close games, with the D grade even going into overtime. I thought it might have been a similar story in the A grade as well with Cougars and Pasky neck and neck in the final quarter. But Cougars stood up to the challenge and clawed their way to victory, securing themselves a spot in the grand final against the CMS Crows. The Cougars asserted their authority early, leading at the quarter time mark and then extending their lead by halftime. The Glasgow sisters were hard to fault but Lucy Taheny and Jo Davey were also doing a good job up the other end against tall timber goalie duo Carrie Ramsey and Sally-Ann Heinrich. Pasky just seemed to struggle in the absence of Amie Price, with Jacinta McPeake giving her all but not having the height to combat the deadly Glasgow attack. Pasky attempted to even up the height imbalance by bringing on Fiona Bussenschutt. It had an immediate impact with Pasky having a brilliant third quarter and finishing two goals ahead at three-quarter time, which was thrilling for all watching on. Going into the final term, the Cougars fought back and managed to bring it back to level, with the two neck and neck for a while before Cougars managed to get the break. They built on their lead and Pasky could not recover. The Cougars’ weapon was Sasha Glasgow, who was runner-up in the association vote count, held at the Maitland clubrooms on Sunday. Congratulations to Sasha and also to winner Sophie Chapman, of Kadina, on a fantastic season. Well done to all other winners and runners-up, there is certainly plenty of talent amongst our ranks. Best of luck to all teams in the grand finals this weekend, I’m looking forward to seeing high quality netball across the board. Grand finals (at Maitland) A GRADE CMS Crows v CY Cougars What a battle this will be between the undefeated CMS Crows and the Cougars juggernaut, which has been building momentum and will enjoy playing a home grand final. There will be key matchups all over the ground with some question marks hanging over the lineups of both teams. Cougars GS Sasha Glasgow is dominant in the goal circle and is
well-supported by big sister Isabelle, so Crows defenders Lauren McSkimming and Sallyann Vivian will have their work cut out for them. Lauren and Sasha played at state netball together, so if anyone in the competition will know the key to shutting down Sasha, it will be Lauren. Crows stalwart Lana Bennett always adds plenty of intensity and voice to the backlines and will have a great tussle with either Tamika Mackereth or Prue Brokenshire. Mackereth will be relied on to be the experienced, steady player in the Cougars forward line. In the Cougars’ preliminary final, and the Crows’ semi the weekend before, both teams rotated their centres so I wouldn’t be surprised to see that again here. For the Crows I would anticipate it will be Amanda Pitt, who plays smart netball and controls the play well, although they also have Jess Liddiard, who drives hard through the centre and feeds the goalies beautifully. The Cougars’ defensive lineup of Chelsea Koch, Lucy Taheny, Jo Davey and Alix Stanton is pretty impressive but will have to work hard to stem the flow into Crows GS Jess Cocks. Cocks and GA Lucy Short have worked well together all year but with Short lacking significant height, Cocks will need to do the bulk of the rebounding. Crows WA Tegan Young is a multiple premiership player for the Crows and is fit from a season playing State League Reserves so will add plenty of movement to the Crows’ midcourt. Despite the Cougars losing both previous battles, I think they’ve only been playing their best netball in the past couple of months and are certainly a chance of an upset here. The Crows have hardly missed a beat all year and if they can remain calm and capitalise on their opportunities, should be able to finish off a perfect season. At the final whistle... CMS Crows by two. B GRADE CMS Crows v Southern Eagles The Crows upset the Eagles a fortnight ago but after a solid win on the weekend the Eagles look like they have well and truly recovered. The Eagles have been the team to beat all season but the Crows seem to have hit their straps at the right time, led by playing coach Rebecca McSkimming in GD, who combines well with GK Chelsea Biddell. The Eagles have plenty of flexibility — Alice Hickman and Amy Loechel shot beautifully on the weekend but they also have the option of Alanna Barrand, who is also very accurate but did a
good job in defence on Saturday. Crows also have three solid goalies, with stalwart Gaye Jolly and young guns Emily Haydon, who has speed and a good leap, and tall timber Sasha McSkimming. Both have a speedy midcourt so are well matched all over the court — this could go either way but with the way the Crows played last time I think the odds are in their favour. At the final whistle... CMS Crows by six. C GRADE CMS Crows v Southern Eagles The Crows and Eagles will also face off in the C grade, with the Eagles undeniably the favourites after making it to the grand final without dropping a game. The Crows came close when they faced off a fortnight ago but the Eagles managed a two-goal win to go straight through to the grand final. Association best and fairest Anissa Thompson will make things hard for the Crows goalies but along with GD Terri Thiel will have to combat the height of Crows goalie Charlotte Campion. Campion is well supported by WA Megan Wildash and goalie Jess Walsh, who was the runner up in the association count so has been in great form this season. Eagles GS Skye Barlow had a great battle with Crows GK Lee Blyth last time and Crows GD Jorja Warwick always gets her hands to plenty of passes. I think the Crows are capable of an upset but the Eagles have set the benchmark all year and should get over the line here. At the final whistle... Southern Eagles by three. D GRADE Moonta v Southern Eagles Moonta held its nerve in overtime to knock out the top-ranked Paskeville and secure a grand final position in Saturday’s D grade preliminary final. Moonta has been the dark horse after finishing fourth but has shown it deserves to be there this weekend. With one win apiece this season, this game really could go either way. Tahlia Congdon has been the form player for Moonta this season as a hardrunning C, coming runner-up in the association votes. Moonta GS Teneika Nitschke and GA Skye Watson are a solid combination. Eagles’ Brittany Hancock and Megan Hoile have also been in great form this season, finishing in the top five at the association vote count, so will certainly have an impact on this match. I think Moonta might just get over the line in this one but it should be a great, close match. At the final whistle... Moonta by four.

What a year it has been for CMS. We’ve come up against plenty of obstacles through injuries, a baby boom and some tough competition but, credit to the team and the club as a whole, we’ve managed to stay focused and get the job done each week. We were lucky enough to keep a core group of players together from last year, while adding to the mix a few returning locals. The girls have a wealth of talent and experience but most importantly have come together as a solid team unit. Regardless of our line-up, we take the court each week and put into practice the game plan and structure we have worked so hard towards. There is plenty of excitement around the club, but the game is far from won. It’s an honour to have the opportunity to play in the grand final and we know it’s going to be a great game of netball between two very deserving sides. – Sallyann Vivian, CMS Crows playing coach
It has been a busy week with the Cougars hosting the grand final. We are looking forward to playing at home with the B grade footy, plus A, F and G grade netball all making the grand final. We had a mixed start to the season with people being away, coming back from having babies and some injuries but have come good at right time of the year. We really enjoyed the game last week against Pasky — our girls stood up when it counted. We are looking forward to playing the Crows who have nothing to lose after being undefeated all year apart from a draw. We’re looking forward to seeing the line-ups in both goal rings. – Naomi Davey and Alix Stanton CY Cougars A grade coaches
