New era for hopeful YPFL

Avoiding a third consecutive Covid-interrupted season is high on Yorke Peninsula Football League’s 2022 agenda. A full season cancellation in 2020 and a two-week hiatus last year left many locals short changed of their usual footy fix. Two new faces, returning president Brad Haylock and new treasurer Karen White, will look to embark on a fresh start this season. Haylock said his return to the role was driven by a love

for footy. “I really missed seeing footy in 2020, but I watched every single round last year,” he said. “Secretary Phil (Brand) and I have been working together for about 16 years now, only I had a two-year break. “I’m feeling pretty refreshed now and keen to get into it.” Haylock said the excitement is building towards a fast-approaching round one. “Now we’re making sure we’ve got all the footies and tickets ready to go for round one,” he said.

“We’re also preparing for Anzac Day and the association games which both sneak up early in the year. “With Covid, we can never be too sure what it’ll look like, but we’re pretty hopeful for a successful season,” he said. “We have guidelines in place to limit the impact it may have on the competition and are trusting clubs continue following their own guidelines. “Part of the reason I returned was because I love talking to people from the clubs and figuring out how to

support them.” Haylock said he was pleased with how the new-look committee had shaped up. “I’m keen to work with a great group of people again with only a couple of changes since I left,” he said. “While they’re all aligned with different clubs, I know they’re willing to do what’s best for the league. “Hopefully everyone’s hard work pays off when that first siren goes.”

Close competition expected this YPNA season Yorke Peninsula Netball Association president Sue Brown is predicting an even competition this season. Brown and her committee are also looking forward to their first full season in several years. “But, we are preparing just in case there are issues, it’s just the way the world is at the moment,” she said. “Our clubs have been having discussions before the season starts and throwing around some what ifs. “We don’t want to have to use them but we want to have rules in place around what happens if several members of a team are impacted by Covid. “The sort of things we’ve asked the clubs to discuss is what happens if a team is ruled out the day before a game — do they forfeit it, or are the points split.

• • • • •

“We don’t want to have to use them but we know it’s important these rules are in place before the season starts.” Brown said the season should bring plenty of tight matches. “I really think it’s going to be fairly even this year, which is good for the game,” she said. “I’m really excited to see players out there and having a good time. “I think that’s the beauty of country sport, you’re able to play your hardest on the courts and then come off it, shake hands and catch up with people. “You build these relationships with people across the peninsula and it’s a great thing to see. “We’re also hopeful of bigger crowds this year with restrictions lessening because that adds to the feel of the day too.”

TIGHT MATCH... This year’s YPNA season is expected to be tight, like this contest between Isabelle Teakle, Ardrossan, and Meg Day, Kadina, last year.

Minor changes to rules By Fin Hansen Yorke Peninsula Football League will head into the season with just one rule change and new fines system. The 50-metre penalty has been reduced to 25m, which is set to minimise the punishment against minor infringements. League secretary Phil Brand said the ruling seems to work well in neighbouring leagues. “Every umpire’s interpretation is different anyway, but hopefully this helps get all leagues and umpires on the same page,” Brand said. “This way when leagues get to association footy (carnivals), they’ve already been playing under the same rules.” Brand said 50 metres was a significant price to pay for very minor acts. “A 50-metre penalty can be very frustrating for players and spectators,” he said. “If we can minimise the penalty for little infringements like entering the protected area and overstepping the mark, it should make for a better game.” A new penalty points system will mean clubs receive fines if they reach a certain number of points during a single season. A yellow card is worth three points, a report and reprimand five and a

suspension by the tribunal is worth 10 points. Once a club reaches 40 points it will be fined $500; at 70 the fine jumps to $1000 and at 100 points it’s $1500. Every club’s points tally will reset at the beginning of a new season. Brand said the system was encouraged by the Central Zone committee for a consistency across its leagues. “The aim of the system is to take action against players consistently causing grief,” Brand said. “Obviously clubs don’t want to pay fines, so this puts pressure back on them to stamp out poor behaviour.” Brand said it would be uncommon for a club to reach any of the three fine thresholds. “I don’t believe any (penalty points) fines would’ve been handed out in the past 10 years if we had this system,” he said. “Money raised by fines under the PPS will be used to fund the YPFL’s representative teams and towards junior development.” Rules introduced last season — last possession out of bounds, 6-6-6 at each centre ball up, 15m protected area for man on the mark, and a yellow card system which can be used without placing the infringing player on report — will return.

Changes to play Yorke Peninsula Country Times is taking a closer look at football this year. For the first time, one report a week will be written by a YPCT journalist and accompanied by photos by our sports photographer. “We admire and appreciate the work of our club scribes on a weekly basis — our sports results would be nothing without them,” YPCT editor Rhiannon Koch said. “But this year, we want to improve on our efforts and are working on ways to lift the coverage of other sports as well, and even expand into more digital content.

4

“We’ve tried to allocate matches as evenly as we can, with each club given the Focus on Football for two home matches. “Naturally the coverage of the match will be in greater depth and will include comments from the coaches, et cetera. “We will let you know in advance when you do not need a scribe, so check your emails! “We thank the league and the clubs for their support in this, and hope it’s something the readers enjoy.” Our first Focus on Football game will be CY Cougars v Paskeville.

celebrate 25 years Special milestone for Cougars This season is a special one for the CY Cougars. The netball and football clubs are celebrating 25 years since the amalgamation of the Maitland and Arthurton clubs, and special celebrations are planned for round one. By accident or design, the Cougars will line up at home against Paskeville — a recreation of their first game in the YPFL. Cougars fans will be hoping for a different result in the A grade football though, with Paskeville getting up 19.7 (121) to 15.8 (98). What follows is an excerpt from the match report by “Buck” YP Country Times, April 15, 1997. A high standard of football was displayed by the “new” Central Yorke Cougars and the “old” Paskeville Magpies at Maitland last Saturday. Nick Honner won the toss for the Cougars and kicked to the southern end of the ground, which was favoured by a slight breeze which fluctuated throughout the day. In warm (hot) sunny weather, more suited to summer sports, Nick Honner also had the honour of recording the first score for the game and the Cougars. It was a point. Brendan Liddicoat scored the first goal of the

day, for Paskeville, at the five minute mark, followed shortly after by a goal from the boot of Luke Williamson. Honner and Heinrich were working hard for the Cougars in the back lines, as were Foster, Bussenschutt and Pontifex for Paskeville. Burrows and Schwartz kept the Cougars in touch with two handy goals at the 12 minute mark. Halfpenny, Allen and Roe were playing well for the Cougars, with Mick Ireland playing a top game on the half back line for the Magpies. The quarter-time score showed Cougars in front by one point: 4-2 to 4-1. Pasky win in second term The second term was all Paskeville after the first 30 seconds when the Cougars booted a point from the centre bounce. After this they were completely outclassed and goals from the boots of Nick Daniel, Ramsey and James virtually sealed the game. The Magpies kicked 6-3 for the term to the Cougars’ three points. In this term Ireland really made his presence felt, and finally received support upfield, which was good to see as he was putting in 100 per cent effort. The third term turned out to be a real contest compared with the second, and goals were being

traded by both sides. With the breeze dropping out, the heat was turned up on all players, and the umpires, and all were needing attention. Scores at the final break showed Paskeville in front comfortably, 14-7 to the Cougars, 8-3. Relentless pressure was displayed by the Central Cougars in the final term as they stalked and rushed their “prey” as their name indicates! But it was to no avail, as their “prey” managed to elude them. The Magpies kicked straight, scoring five goals in the final term, whilst the Cougars scored 7-3, only to go down by 3-5. Considering this was the first time the Maitland and Arthurton lads had really played together, they did a very fine job. Had they not a second term lapse, I feel the score would have been reversed. Players in the callibre of Nick Holland, David Langford, Paul Burrows, Dale Thomson and Wade Allen put in well with the rest of the team. The team had nine goal scorers, and Burrows led the way with three. To the winners on the scoreboard (as the football public were the winners on the day), Paskeville, were well served by Mick Ireland (my bog), Damien Foster, Luke Williamson and Sam Bussenschutt.

CY Cougars ruckman Matthew Dyett, no. 21, battles for a ruck contest in the trial game against Balaklava.

“Central Yorke Cougars would like to sincerely thank our major sponsors. Together with our many current, past and future sponsors we acknowledge your fabulous support towards our club. No matter the level of support, we appreciate you all. Thank you…..”

2022 SEASON PREVIEW

Peering into the YPFL’s future Season predictions With “Jeremy Binlayson”

1 CMS Crows — last year: 1st It seems unfair to tip against the reigning premier, which has somehow improved its side. The Crows probably went into last year’s grand final as underdogs. Adding star on-ballers like 2021 Adelaide SANFL player Jake Cook will only mean extra forward line minutes for zippy smalls Jarryn Male and Josh Hoyle. Plus, being able to consistently rely on defenders Tom Hooper, Shaun McNeilly, versatile swingman Ben Edwards and playing coach Brett Baillie, Crows could’ve found the perfect recipe to be extra competitive around the ground and go back-to-

2 Moonta — last year: 2nd The Demons are another powerhouse which has found a way to improve its senior depth. Cousin of key defender Brodie Maitland, dual-Eastern Eyre Peninsula Mail Medallist Ryley Maitland, coupled with 2018 North Adelaide premiership player Brock Castree, will be massive bolsters to an already star-studded Moonta midfield. Lachy Everett should be a fitting replacement up front for Dylan Aldridge, although it’ll be hard to replicate the dominance of last year’s grand final best on ground. Key forward Matt Altmann will be frothing the silky additions to his midfield — if he and spearhead Jack Cooper line up together for at least half the season, next to no backlines will be able to stop the Dees.

Bute

3 Kadina — last year: 7th Going purely based on the names added to Kadina’s list, they should be the season’s biggest improvers. Any side which picks up four former SANFL players and two premiership full forwards, both of whom had led the YPFL goal kicking in multiple seasons, is bound to be a flag contender. Woodville-West Torrens premiership players Jake von Bertouch and Angus Poole have returned after decorated league careers. Second-year Bloods coach Rian Nelson will likely need time to tinker with his front half — squeezing in Willy Searle, 551 goals from 2010-15, and Daniel Toole, 192 goals across 201317. Poole will provide some long-awaited assistance for Jayson Manners in the engine room, which should free up Giles Ellis to spend more time outside the contest. Former league footballers Jack Elsworthy and Jaydn Brind will also sure up Kadina’s midfield depth.

Very similar to Kadina, the Cougars will look to take a massive step on the back of a tremendous recruiting coup. Ruckman Henry Crauford will suit up in the navy and white with serious SANFL experience. The 24 year old will add valuable experience to the Cougars midfield. He will combine with former Geelonglisted and West Adelaide speedster Zac Bates, who returns after a couple of years away. Some would remember Bates’ purple patch in the second half of 2019 when he polled 14 Mail Medal votes across seven games. He and Jay Williams, brother of hardnosed on-baller Ash Williams, could form a lethal midfield along with second-year Cougars Charlie Hay and Corey Gray. A fulltime ruckman will allow more time forward for arguably the league’s best contested mark Luke Trenorden. Returning youngster Jackson Bruce will also give extra poise off half back. This side laid a strong foundation last year, and with a few gun acquisitions, the Cougars could push deep into September.

2022 SEASON PREVIEW 5 Southern Eagles —

7 Bute — last year: 5th

last year: 4th An underwhelming finals campaign rounded out the Eagles’ flag defence last year. The Eagles seem to be heading into 2022 with less than favourable odds after losing gun midfielders Jacob Pedlar, Nik Seccafien and Koby Evans, plus YPFL’s fifth-leading goal kicker Corey Solly during the off-season. Replacing them are 2019 premiership Eagles Scott Mumford and Matt Taylor, plus Brendon Moon, who are all shifting from Waikerie. Mumford bagged 64 majors in their premiership season and will more than make up for Solly’s absence in the goal square, while 2019 grand final BOG Taylor will be more than serviceable in the ruck despite his limited midfield stocks. Watch versatile 18-year-old forward James Reuther also cause headaches for the league’s best defenders in a return to his home club. The Eagles’ front half is very capable of dominating games, but the big question mark seems to be hanging over their midfield.

The Roosters were trending in the right direction when they joined Adelaide Plains Football League 2020. Bute attracted some handy young talent from neighbouring leagues, before picking up a few big names like former North Adelaide midfielder/forward Pat Davies, last season. It was unlucky to miss September after the league cut finals to a top four due to Covid, but it was still an underwhelming season for a side with so much talent. Several Rooster recruits, including Davies, 2020 APFL Mail Medallist Henry Trenorden and clever forward Jack Wilkins, have since followed coach Chad Bourke in departing the club. Silky defender Angus Faulkner will offer some flexibility and could create a dangerous half back line alongside Sam Rose, who continues to grow every year. Sam Taylor will carry much of his side’s goal-kicking responsibility, however clean entries could be few and far between. Many were pleased to see club legend Matty Rose step up to coach, but it seems he could have his work cut out for him.

6 Paskeville — last year: 3rd

8 Wallaroo — last year: 9th

Pasky is another outfit which could quickly feel the effects of some huge departures. Abraham Helfand and Lachy Wilson, two of the league’s best inside midfielders, and Ashley Bruce the competition’s premier wingman, in recent memory, have all left. Key recruits Nick Gregurke and Jackson Murphy had immediate impacts in their sole season in black and white last year. Replacing the stars will be hard-nosed on-baller Sam Wormald and zone-level player Alex Brown, plus outside midfielder Jacob Nelson. It will be a very different look for the Pies in the middle of the ground, except for association on-baller Brodie Paige. If there’s anyone Pasky would trust to lead the A grade through what could be a rough patch, it’d be new playing coaches Tyson Wait and Patrick Keane, who have stuck with the Pies through thick and thin. It’s shaping up as a challenging 2022, but don’t write Pasky off too quickly.

It seems only sensible to predict a bottom-end finish for the Dogs, who couldn’t manage more than a draw against Kadina in the Kernewek Cup last year. Star full-forward Sam Dyer remarkably finished equal runner-up in the league goal kicking with 40 majors, despite his side not managing a single win. However, he’s joined roughton-Mundoora after nearly a full preseason with Wallaroo. Ever-reliable ruckman Craig Jamar has hung up the boots after concussion concerns put an end to a stellar career. Other key cogs Jack Bollmeyer and David Allocca have also departed. Former Central District player Adrian Marks and Virginia tall Hayden Ingram have massive shoes to fill in the new-look spine. They’ll be helped by smoothmoving on-baller Tyrell Hocking and hopefully the returning Riley Westlake, if he can stay injury free. Rounding out the midfield, Ben Russell and Matt Hallandal will be looking to build on solid 2021 campaigns. Depth seems to be the glaring issue for the Dogs — their top-end talent will need to really heat up if they are to string wins together.

9 Ardrossan — last year: 8th

Specialty Breads

The Roos were widely tipped as a flag contender after recruiting Sam Jacobs and several other experienced guns ahead of last season. Jacobs was joined by 100 games of SANFL experience in Angus Rowntree, 2015 YPFL Mail Medallist Josh Lawson and speedy on-baller Sam Roads to form a lethal midfield along with stalwart Steve Wellington. Although they essentially walked the ball out of the centre square, a lack of depth around the ground hurt Ardrossan badly. Commiserations must go to Jacobs who went down with a dreaded ACL injury in the last minor round game of a return season to his beloved Roos. Of course, the big man will be next to impossible to replace on the field, but it would be no surprise if he is sighted around the club this year. Ardrossan will be adamant of keeping its core group together through what could be a rough season. More promisingly, the club had an influx of youngsters pulling on the blue and white in its junior grades last year — fingers crossed its strong culture stands tall.

YORKE PENINSULA FOOTBALL & NETBALL

2022 SEASON PREVIEW SANFL trio return to their junior roots By Peter Argent Kadina Football Club has high ambitions for the season after welcoming back three former juniors. Returning are 150-game, dual SANFL premiership winning onballer Angus Poole, key position player premiership footballer Jake Von Bertouch and secondgeneration Bloodhounds player Jack Elsworthy. “I played an A grade game for Kadina as a 14 year old in a match against Wallaroo at home,” Poole now 28, said. “That was my previous game in the Bloods colours; the rest of my senior football has been at the Eagles. “I’m keen to have an input and share some experience, but I just want to enjoy play country footy. “There will be pressure to perform coming back from Adelaide, but I’ve kept reasonably fit and have a fair bit of pride in my performance.” Poole suggested it would be great to play A grade football alongside younger brother James as he returned to his rural roots. Elsworthy is the son of the 2002 Kadina A grade premiership coach Ian and has many strong memories about that flag success. Elsworthy last played at Kadina in 2018, breaking a leg late in the season.

“I would have played one or two A grade games in my mid teens, but that was between school commitments and underage footy at the Eagles,” Elsworthy said. “At Woodville-West Torrens I played four years of underage and had three years on the senior list. “I started in the Prince Alfred College First XVIII in year 10, and had full seasons in the Firsts over the next two winters. “In 2019 I had a season at Port Adelaide, playing in the league grand final against Glenelg. “The ‘20 season play started late because of Covid and Port wasn’t in the competition that year so moved to South Adelaide, and also played there last year. “I have a strong group of mates back at the Bloods and am looking forward to this season.” Elsworthy also made mention of senior colts coaches, Shane Adams and Damien Ziersch, as being import mentors and influences on his football progression. Von Bertouch arrived at Oval Avenue from Kadina as a 15 year old key forward; however, made his name at SANFL league level initially as a key defender. He debuted against West Adelaide at Richmond during the final weeks of the 2013 season. Von Bertouch was an AllAustralian Under 16s player and moved forward in the 2020 SANFL campaign under Jade Sheedy.

Ardrossan Football and Netball Clubs

Courtside How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers? We are looking strong in the numbers with both senior and junior players which is really exciting! Given our numbers out at preseason trainings, we are looking forward to hopefully filling all four senior teams. We have some really great girls around the club this year which I think has helped bring some old players back to the court, as well as drawn some new players. We are looking at strong numbers in all our junior grades. We have a great committee this year with a mix of fresh faces as well as those who have been around for years. As with all clubs, it is a case of many hands make light work so it is great to have so many people offering up their time. Key players lost from 2022: Former playing coach Kate Pfeiffer is taking time off this season to welcome another beautiful bub so we wish her all the best and are very excited to meet the future Roo once they arrive. Meg Rowntree has taken a step back this season to focus on her family and new business (congrats Meg), and Izzy Jacobs is not returning this year due to family commitments in Adelaide. Key player gains for 2022: We have been very lucky with some fantastic new recruits this season, including Charli McIntosh-Whitehouse who is joining us from Southern Eagles and Belinda Wouters who has joined us from Loxton. We also welcome back Shekia Bockmann after having a few years off. What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? We started our preseason at the end of January but unfortunately plans were somewhat derailed when a number of our girls were forced to isolate either as a close contact or unfortunately with Covid itself. Luckily, we are now back

on track and have been able to put on a solid preseason for our senior players, under the expert guidance of Kate Pfeiffer. What will be some key focuses for the group this season? We really want to continue to build on our positive season last year. The camaraderie around the club was amazing and I would really like to see this grow and prosper as well as accountability to ourselves and our teammates. Positive attitudes, commitment to trainings and accountability for individual fitness will all be big focuses. Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? We have some great junior talent which is going to be very exciting over the next few years. Two of our juniors have moved up to seniors and we can’t wait to watch them both find their groove. Nicole Whittaker, who only started playing netball in F grade, already has a great netball brain and reads the ball beautiful as a midcourter and defender, while Isabelle Teakle will provide some much-needed height as a goalie; she moves very well in the circle and her accuracy is incredible. Who do you think will be the team/s to beat this year? Crows are always a big contender. I feel like often they set the benchmark for the standard of play. Cougars have also had a great couple of years in the A grade and I would expect this year to be no different. Moonta as well are in a similar position. What team do you think could be a dark horse this season? This is always a hard one! Kadina could possibly be, they have been around the mark for the past few years and could make a real breakthrough. Bute may also be another dark horse contender.

MOVER... Nicole Whittaker’s skills in the midcourt will be used well by Ardrossan’s senior sides this year. What does the club hope to achieve during the 2022 season? We would love to just see some great, competitive netball and have all the girls out there really enjoying it and loving the game. If we happen to get some teams into finals, that would be the icing on the cake but I know I will be proud of each and every player we have this season just for coming out and leaving it all on the court each week!

Wishing all YPFL & YPNA teams the very best for season 2022

EFFICIENT... The Roosters will be searching to get the ball in midfielder Luke McCauley’s hands as much as possible after losing a few big names in the off-season.

with coach Matthew Rose Which young guns should we look out for this year? We are a very young squad so it’s really hard to isolate and name them. We are looking for improvement across the board from all of our young players and the more games they get under their belt the better. What will you build on from last year to help you go the extra step to make finals? The young players with another year under their belt will definitely help. New players to the club always bring fresh enthusiasm to the group as well. Why step up and coach Bute this year? I’ve never been at any other club and the opportunity to coach the club I played for is exciting. Having a close mate Gary Wehr assisting me is also great.

How have trainings been so far? Enthusiasm on the track has been fantastic. Our fitness will need to be at a high level to compete with the more fancied sides so that is a focus for us. Who is the team to beat in 2022? Moonta will be the team to beat with some very good inclusions. The Demons had good depth already and will be hard to beat. They were only a kick away from winning last year so adding some top end talent has made them stronger. Who is the dark horse for the premiership? Southern Eagles will be around the mark and will be a better side this season with the return of Scott Mumford up forward and Matt Taylor in ruck. Kadina will also be a big improver as well the Cougars with both having some quality ins.

How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers? The club is looking exceptionally healthy for 2022 with senior player and volunteer numbers. With regard to junior teams, we are a bit light on. Bute is fortunate to have a fantastic pool of volunteers who work tirelessly to support the running of our club.

A-B squad: Alex Wehr, Anna Kearney, Bree Taylor, Brooke Russell, Charlotte Rose, Dani Richardson, Ella McCauley, Hannah Wellington, Lahni Smith, Maddy Simpson, Marissa Hewett, Matilda Jones, Montana Briggs, Olivia Dunn, Renee Drewett, Shayla Herbert, Sophie Longbottom.

Key players lost from 2021: Nil. Key player gains for 2022 (and where did they come from): Maddy Simpson (Newton Jaguars, Premier League), Marissa Hewett (returning from injury), Dani Richardson (returning from injury). What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? Commitment, intensity, dedication, determination, accountability, team connection. Also, to maintain a high level of fitness, endurance and strength training at all times throughout the season. What will be some key focuses for the group this season? To be competitive, take risks, work hard, have courage and play with pride, determination, passion and commitment. To value their role and position on the court, to do what you love and love what you do. Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? Bute is fortunate for season 2022 to have a great pool of younger up-and-coming players in the A/B squad. Who do you think will be the team/s to beat this year? Crows and Cougars are always super strong and have great depth throughout their grades and in particular A grade. What team do you think could be a dark horse this season? Hard to say but maybe Ardrossan or Kadina. What does the club hope to achieve during the 2022 season? To be competitive in all grades, to have success as a club on and off the court, to have good team morale and build positive team connection. It is important the girls enjoy playing the game.

BACK AGAIN... Hannah Wellington is again part of Bute Netball Club’s A/B grade squad for the 2022 season.

with A grade manager Ali Bogle How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers? Numbers in the junior grades are very strong and we look forward to developing our juniors as players for the future. In the senior grades we are looking to field four competitive sides. We have a committed band of parents and volunteers who give their time to support our club. We value the fact our football and netball teams are under the strong combined banner of CMS Crows. Key players lost from 2021: We lost Amy Lennerth, GK in the final game of the minor round to injury last year, and unfortunately, she won’t be back this season. Key player gains for 2022: We are delighted to have Tegan Young, Felicity Kemp, Erin Cock and Sasha McSkimming returning to the club after a two-year hiatus. We will retain a number of our players from our minor premier and premiership teams in 2021. It will make team selection a very competitive process. What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? Preseason is about gaining fitness and enjoying the camaraderie of working hard together

to achieve that goal. What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Clean use of the ball, strong combinations moving the ball down the court and excellent teamwork. Who are some younger up-andcoming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? Macey Coe and Mia Longbottom had excellent years in 2021 and will be players to watch as the season progresses. Jess Farrow will make her way back to the court from injury which meant she was sidelined for most of 2021, so she too will be one to watch. Who do you think will be the team/s to beat this year? The team to beat will be the one we take the court against each week. What team do you think could be a dark horse this season? No team should be underestimated, every team can win on their day. What does the club hope to achieve during the 2022 season? Back-to-back premierships would be great but more important will be the development of our junior players, playing netball at a high standard and belonging to a great club.

STARS RETURN... Felicity Kemp is amongst several big name players returning for the CMS Crows this season.

How has the feeling/intensity been at training so far this year? Numbers at training have been fantastic. We started training at the start of December. Adelaide players are training with Flinders Park Football Club. We have many young fellas showing their face at training also, which is awesome to see at this time of the year. We have had a good preseason and can’t wait to get stuck into round 1. What does it mean for the club to celebrate 25 years this year? Central Yorke Cougars are proud football and netballs club with fantastic people who have been privileged enough to wear the uniform, or to contribute in some way off the field. Many people have contributed behind the scenes to ensure this club runs as successfully as it does. Speaking on behalf of the playing group, we feel privileged to wear the guernsey week in, week out, and hope to bring a premiership home and celebrate with the many people involved in making us who we are in the past 25 years and beyond. Team to beat in 2022? Moonta. Dark horse for premiership in 2022? Kadina.

SOLID... The sticky hands of playing coach Luke Trenorden will again be a valuable asset to Central Yorke around the ground this year.

How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers? We are excited this season for some of our senior players to step up as volunteers into committee positions. We still have a few positions around the club to fill such as canteen manager, F grade and H grade coach. Player numbers are good, we have seen many new faces join or return to our club, and it’s great they are younger adults, at the start of their senior player journey. Our plethora of junior players is starting to thin which for us is great because this year we have been able to ensure all junior players who registered get a game on a Saturday. Unfortunately, this does mean we don’t have the excess players to support the SYP Netball Association with entering a team. What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? We are having a pretty normal preseason, offering a fitness-based training on Tuesday and more game skill orientated training on Thursday. We will be having both an internal and external trial to finalise teams through game play.

Snapshot Coaches for 2022 A grade – Janine Burrows B grade – Jess Morony C grade – Charlotte Nixon D grade – Brooke Morris

What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Remaining Covid free and getting game time will be a key focus for senior players this year. We obviously would like to go one better in a number of our senior grades after last year’s disappointing grand final day.

Key players lost from 2021: We have lost a lot of our B grade players from last season, just to the usual reasons such as pregnancy (Eona Petch and Emma Stuart), relationship changes and relocation for study (Charity Selleck and Mia Whittaker).

Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? Ruby Dyett and Layla Heinrich both graduate into our senior ranks and both have something to offer. We have been lucky enough to extend some of our older juniors in Sadie Polkinghorne and Marley Holmes and give them a run as seniors to develop their netball. I think all these younger players will rise to the challenge as they get supported by some of our more experienced players.

Key player gains for 2022: We have welcomed a number of new younger players to the club who have moved to the area and attend school locally (Tayla Coles, Lily Beston and Tammy Rawlings). We welcome Deb Bray and Emma Daniel back after having children. We also welcome Brittney Hendry and Liv Northeast who have followed their hearts to the Cougars. We welcome the return of Brianna Schwartz and Nikayah Smith. A-B squad: Laura Cassidy, Alix Hillebrand, Chloe Linke, Lana Bagshaw, Sarah Luke, Tayla Barrand, Jo Davey, Jess Morony, Emma Daniel, Bridget McEvoy, Sophie Baker, Georgina Davies, Debra Bray, Sadie Polkinghorne, Marley Holmes, Charlotte Nixon.

Kadina

Who do you think will be the team/s to beat this year? CMS Crows will again be strong. What team do you think could be a dark horse this season? I think both Moonta and Paskeville both could be surprising!

DEVELOPING TALENT... Marley Holmes, in action against Kadina in last year’s E grade grand final will be amongst the Cougars up-and-coming young playing group.

What does the club hope to achieve during the 2022 season? We had an awesome 2021 with all our netball sides making it to the finals and having five sides play on grand final day. We were happy with our E and F premierships but would definitely like to achieve some senior flags this year.

with coach Rian Nelson How important has it been to recruit all former players or those with a connection to Kadina? Every club has the challenge of combining their locals with new recruits, but I think it could be a bit easier this year with lots of the boys already having played together or known each other. I’m really happy they all went and achieved what they did in Adelaide, but it’s great they always kept a link with the club. How will you manage your mix of youth and experience this year? The plan was always to develop our young players in anticipation of the experience coming back. If we went out and blindly recruited last year, there mightn’t have been enough room for our locals to come back. It will be great for the experienced players to share their knowledge with our younger guys. Has there been much anticipation in the lead up to the season? Although we missed finals last

year, the vibe around the club was awesome. There were lots of people who enjoyed seeing our development so hopefully that continues on.

Player Movement Welcome • Jake von Bertouch (key forward) — Woodville-West Torrens • Angus Poole (midfielder) — Woodville-West Torrens • Jack Elsworthy (midfielder) — South Adelaide • Jaydn Brind (midfielder) — West Adelaide • Daniel Toole (key forward) — Encounter Bay • Willy Searle (key forward) — Gawler Central • Jordan Searle (key position) — Gawler Central • Nick Rawson (defender) — Nuriootpa • Cameron Faulkner (forward) — South Augusta • Matt Chapman (midfielder) — Mount Barker

Overall goal? The key now is to keep promoting our young talent whilst bringing the new players into the fold. We have a few third and fourth-year players now, so if they can develop into strong Agraders that should have a big impact. Of course, we want to play finals, but it’s important that it’s enjoyable along the way. Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Jordy Cunningham, Lachie Brook. Team to beat? CMS Crows, Moonta. Dark horse? Central Yorke. Events around the club? • Hosting night games against Wallaroo and Central Yorke — Rounds 3 and 18 • New website launch • Chris Flavel 200 senior games

LONG WAIT... Bloods captain Alex East will be eyeing his first finals campaign since winning the premiership in 2017. Almost a dozen gun inclusions will bolster Kadina’s young core in the side’s push up the ladder.

with A grade coach

How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers? Great numbers for all grades with some new players. It has been awesome to have our umpires at trial games to help with our selections. Key players lost from 2021: We were excited to see the return of Hayley Gullery in 2022 after not playing for some years, only to lose Hayley to a serious knee injury at training. Sophie Gregory is not playing this year and Sophie Franz has moved with her family to Adelaide. Key player gains for 2022: We have picked up Lou Falkner who moved here from Roxby Downs with her family. Holly East has made a return to the Bloods along with Carolyn Neumann. What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? The passion and commitment the players have demonstrated preseason has been excellent. They have voluntarily organised their own fitness training on Sunday mornings for the past eight weeks to complement our normal weekly on-court trainings. What will be some key focuses for the group this season? We will be developing our younger players from a

coach’s perspective mixed with having more experienced players around them. Strong communication and a positive mindset are critical in achieving our goals. Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? We have a number of goalies who are performing well and moving around the goal circle with confidence including Lainey Charlton, Breanna Taylor and Emma Prout. Ebony Lamshed has joined the senior playing group from E grade and always gives her best throughout the midcourt. Who do you think will be the team/s to beat this year? Always hard to predict, based on last year, Cougars are always continuing to develop their younger players and Crows are traditionally strong. What team do you think could be a dark horse this season? Bute are a team to watch and could definitely sneak up the ladder this year.

Snapshot Coaches for 2022

with coach Luke Pridham What will you look to build on after coming so close in 2021? We’ve tinkered with our game style and finetuned a few areas, but haven’t had to change too much. We’ll still need to improve an extra 20 per cent with teams like Kadina and the Cougars improving. What have you made of your preseason so far? We’ve had another really strong preseason which has mostly been player driven. The boys were keen to get on the field for a trial game against Uraidla Districts earlier in March. Is everyone hopeful you can get back to the grand final and take one extra step? We were really focused on keeping our core group together this off-season so it was great to have nearly everyone recommit. It feels like everyone’s really keen to rectify on last year, which has started with our senior boys and rolled onto our younger group.

Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Aidan Turner, Tom Hancocks, Oliver Mullins, Alex Elsworthy.

Player Movement Welcome: • Brock Castree (midfielder) — North Adelaide • Ryley Maitland (midfielder) — Kimba • Lachy Everett (forward) — South Gawler

Team to beat? CMS Crows. Darkhorse? Central Yorke. Events around the club? • Two new light towers and LED lighting are ready to be installed after being purchased in 2019, thanks to a donation from the Moonta Dart Club

Farewell: • Dylan Aldridge — Proprietary/Risdon

• The Moonta Cricket Club is in the process of installing new practice nets on the site of the old pavilion, which will also be accessible during football warm ups • Major functions including black tie, gala and presentation nights have been planned, with other social events to be announced as the season approaches

ONE STEP FURTHER... Moonta forward duo Tom Hancocks and Matt Altmann will be hopeful of making amends from last year’s grand final, in which it succumbed to CMS Crows by a point. Adding a pair of star on-ballers and a returning face into the front half certainly won’t hurt their chances.

Player Movement

How will you fill some holes whilst continuing to grow this year? We are looking to grow some individuals in different positions and maintain the high level of competitiveness we have maintained across the last decade. Have you been pleased with your preseason so far? Preseason has been led by the players this year with four young leaders taking charge. I can’t remember a season when numbers and enjoyment have been this consistently high. Jacob Nelson and Matt Correll (worth a follow on Strava) have been pushing each other at the front of the pack all preseason. What will two experienced on-field coaches bring to the group? Our main focus for the year is to be a transparent and approachable coaching staff with an aim of driving player ownership. Having two playing coaches and an experienced bench staff will allow us to share ideas from different viewpoints on the field.

Welcome • Alex Brown (midfielder) — Kaniva Leeor United • Jacob Nelson (wingman) — Hectorville • Thomas Weiss (utility) — Eastern Ranges • Sam Wormald (midfielder) — Henley • Dale Franklin (defender) — Karoonda

Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? Matt Correll. Team to beat? CMS Crows.

Farewell • Abraham Helfand — Balaklava • Ashley Bruce — BSR • Lachy Wilson — BSR • Nick Gregurke — Nuriootpa • Seth Matson — retired • Jackson Murphy — Angaston • Tom Jennings — Kybybolite • Xavier Wagner — Cummins

Darkhorse? Central Yorke.

HANGING TIGHT... Hard-nosed on-baller Brodie Paige is one of few players remaining from Paskeville’s core group. He’ll be hoping to rally together a new-look midfield after a handful of stars left the club.

Events around the club? • This is the first season since Bute and Paskeville amalgamated, Paskeville will fill all four junior grades on its own. The club is lucky to have received junior players from Ardrossan and is hoping to attract more now there is a grade for everyone • A 21-year celebration and 2012 B Grade premiership reunion has been planned

Courtside Fiona Bussenschutt with A grade coach

How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers? Our club is looking healthy with a good number of players who are keen for the netball season to start. We are very thankful to have volunteers who have taken on many and various roles within the club. Key players lost from 2021: We have lost Savannah Zielonka and Kirsty Jackson from our 2021 A grade side. They have both moved away for work. Key player gains for 2022: We have been fortunate to be joined by a local medical student, a young ex-Kadina and District Netball Association player, Pasky girls returning to the district and a few returning players post babies. What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? Stacey Evans has been in charge of preseason and it has been a fun mix of fitness sessions based around the Copper Coast. Early trainings really focus on getting the netball brain and footwork starting to fire up again — helping players to transition from summer sports or to fire up after a summer break! What will be some key focuses for the group this season? As always, key focuses for the year will be to

Coaches for 2022 A grade – Fiona Bussenschutt B grade – Sarah Pomery (assistant coach Amanda Carmichael) C grade – Leonie Ey D grade – Amanda Waters Steph Rundle

do the basics well — good hands, good footwork and good timing will help build successful teams. There will be an overall theme of fun and inclusiveness aiming to allow each player to develop their own potential.

A-B squad: Still to be confirmed but will include familiar and new names including stalwarts Jade Daniel, Katie Koster, Sarah Pomery, Stacey Evans and returning players Annabelle Pearce, Amie Price and Elise Burnell.

Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? We are really excited to see what Lucy Bussenschutt can do in her second year of A grade. Her work rate is second to none while Jorja Rogers has athleticism to burn and is capable of playing numerous positions. Who do you think will be the team/s to beat this year? I think it’ll be a super even competition this year, with lots of high-quality matches to look forward to. Crows will be keen to go back-to-back and with a young squad they are always dangerous. I think any team at this time of the year looks dangerous! What team do you think could be a dark horse this season? Southern Eagles.

ONE TO WATCH... Lucy Bussenschutt, Paskeville, will be one to watch going into her second season of A grade.

What does the club hope to achieve during the 2022 season? To have fun, to build balanced sides to work together, do the basics well and execute under pressure then results take care of themselves!

Our friendly and professional team will provide you with an experience that is relaxing and of the highest quality, with an emphasis on using Australian-owned and made products that are cruelty free and toxin free.

Player Movement

What will be your main on-field focuses this year? We’ve had a lot of blokes retire and move on, so we’ll be looking to gel our new midfield and team as a whole. Our forward line could be the strongest it’s been in a while — it’ll be important to move the ball down there cleanly.

What are your expectations for season 2022? Despite losing some handy players, we still think we’re going to be competitive. We’re really getting everyone to drive our culture and standards now. Which young player(s) should the league look out for this year? James Reuther. Team to beat? Kadina. Darkhorse? Central Yorke.

RELIABLE... A dangerous Southern Eagles forward line will be able to rely on big-bodied midfielder Nathan Allen to feed them the football this year. Alike several other sides, Allen will be hopeful of gelling with a few fresh faces in the centre of the ground.

Courtside Netball Club How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers? Low numbers for senior players this year and we suspect volunteers may need to be rallied a little but it should not be too much of an issue. Key players lost from 2021: From A grade Katie Hocking (break for a season); B grade Jessie East (injury), Erin Hoare (study in Adelaide); C grade Leanne Goldsmith (retired but hopefully will make a return, four more games until 300 played for Eagles), Anissa Thompson (retired), Ebbony Peter (moved to Adelaide). Key player gains for 2022 (and where did they come from): Sarah Ramsay in A grade. What are your plans for pre-season and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? We have been working on fitness and ensuring injury prevention as a key aspect of preseason to build both cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and also good relationships. Preseason has been occuring at both Flaherty’s Beach as well as on the netball court. At our preseason we would like to see commitment, encouragement and of course players having fun!

What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Key focus for this season is to build a positive team culture which will in turn help us to create a strong bond as a team. This bond will enable players to work cohesively together on and off court. Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? Jada Pedler, playing both juniors and seniors, can read the play of the ball before it even moves! Who do you think will be the team/s to beat this year? Hard to tell at this point, it really could be anyone. A grade Cougars or Crows, B grade Cougars, C grade Paskeville, D grade Crows.

What does the club hope to achieve during the 2022 season? We hope to achieve a positive club culture that extends out to other clubs as well both on and off the court. We want to be a club people are proud to represent, some wins would be nice but everyone enjoying the season would be the best outcome!

Wallaroo Football and Netball Clubs How promising has it been to see some junior success recently, including last year’s Junior Colts premiership? Our Junior Colts had a successful year last year and I know they’ll be working towards carrying that into this season. Our Senior Colts worked through a lot of ups and downs — their improvement over the season was tremendous and to go from being short on numbers at the start to just missing the finals is a great positive for the group.

How will your junior development assist your senior group in 2022? Last year our kids played a massive part in ensuring we filled two senior grades each week. Most of these kids still have another year of under 17s and the club will look to keep developing them for their transition into senior football. I’m sure there will be new lads getting senior opportunities throughout season.

What has the atmosphere around the club been like early this year? The atmosphere is great — our entire group is working really hard and excited for the season.

What have you been working on this preseason and what are you aiming to achieve in 2022? Our group is working on fitness and injury management this year to hopefully keep two strong sides together all year. The goal for the year will be to improve our group as a whole and achieve success as a whole club. Which young player(s) should the league look out for? Anthony Bagnato, Zak Cuthill. Teams to beat? Courtside with A grade coach Mel Halliday How is the club looking in terms of player/volunteer numbers? Senior numbers are looking fantastic, we have seen a real interest this season and will have more than enough players in each senior grade. This has also flowed onto junior grades with most teams now filled. We are still struggling with some of the beginner grades. Key players lost from 2021 (and where have they gone): Prue Redden due to work commitments interstate. Key player gains for 2022 (and where did they come from): Adele Biancardi will return to her home club this season and Isabelle Glasgow has also joined the team after taking a break to have a baby. What are your plans for preseason and what do you want to see from the players at trainings? Pre-season started earlier than usual for Wallaroo Netball Club. We held our initial trials in early January and training has

continued since then. February consisted of fitness and we have now moved into specific skills. What will be some key focuses for the group this season? Continuity, commitment, positive attitudes and camaraderie. Who are some younger up-and-coming players for your supporters to keep an eye on this year? Baylee Houghagen, Macayla Marner, Chelsea Maywald, Emma Phipps. Who do you think will be the team/s to beat this year? Moonta and CMS Crows. What team do you think could be a dark horse this season? We have some great talent this year and believe we will be the dark horse this season. What does the club hope to achieve during the 2022 season? Team bonding, seeing success but not necessarily on the scoreboard and improving every week.

YORKE PENINSULA FOOTBALL & NETBALL

2022 SEASON PREVIEW Let the YPNA tipping season begin Season predictions With “First Aid Kit” I’m excited to sharing my thoughts with you ahead of this year’s YPNA season. Talk around the court is that it’ll be a tight contest for the premiership this year, but we all know that’s just polite. Some clubs will continue to be miles ahead of their opposition — I’m looking at you Crows. Despite my years of experience, please take what I have to say with a huge grain of salt. I know how this time of year is as a player and a selector, so I completely understand how tricky it can be and how uncertain things still are now. Having said that, I am contractually obliged to share my tips for the year, starting with my season predictions.

1 CMS Crows A back-to-back effort for CMS Crows is to be expected, I think. Crows continue to be one of the leading teams in the league. Their ability to continually be at the top of their game, both on the court and off, is inspirational. Aided by some of the league’s finest players of the past decade, they’ll go in as strong favourites for sure.

2 Paskeville Paskeville’s strengths continue to be in its ability to develop its young players into

top senior talents. They are ably led by a raft of experienced players, which then helps the development of the youth. And so continues the great circle of life. They fell just short of finals last year, and I’m believing some of the hype around this season.

3 CY Cougars Cougars will be hungry to get back to grand final day, and honestly, I think they could. I’m sure we say it about every season, but this one feels like it will be exceptionally tight. Cougars remain a welldrilled team and despite some positional losses, they’ll be able to fill the gaps with juniors like Sadie Polkinghorne and Marley Holmes.

4 Bute A few of the clubs have picked Bute as this year’s dark horse and I’m inclined to agree. They didn’t get as many wins on the board last year as they may like, but they had some good strong moments. The return of the ever-reliable Marissa Hewett will make a huge difference to the club.

5 Moonta Moonta finished last season in the top two for a reason. They are another side that is always around the mark. Honestly, it’s impressive at how consistent these teams continue to be. Moonta may be relying on its up-and-coming players this

season, which isn’t a bad place to be. I expect them to win some close matches.

6 Ardrossan I so want to see Ardrossan do well again this year. To make finals the way they did last year has been a long time coming. It was incredibly important for the club’s culture and I’d love to see them build on it again this year. Of course, they have some pretty big outs which will make an impact. But the fact they’re reporting good numbers across all senior grades is fantastic and really bodes well for the future.

7 Kadina Some familiar faces are stepping back onto the court for Kadina in Holly East and Carolyn Neumann. These are incredibly quality inclusions. Kadina was unlucky to miss finals last year, and will want to do better this year. And they may try, but the other sides might have something to say about that.

8 Southern Eagles All clubs are focusing on building a positive team culture and creating a strong bond. Winning also helps bring people together, and I can see the Eagles winning a few more games than last season. Senior numbers are a little tough this year, but that means it’s a great opportunity for the junior players to step up.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS... Many are predicting CMS Crows to make it to their second grand final in as many years, and could come up against CY Cougars again — like last year where Laura Cassidy watches Kari Jones grab a high pass.

9 Wallaroo Wallaroo is looking to blood its younger players and build something solid. I think this is the year they can get a couple of wins on the board. It would be huge, for the club and the competition, if they can start to build and grow their side.

Irlam collects state netball honours By Peter Argent Brooke Irlam, Moonta, is just one of three country girls selected in the South Australian state 17 and under netball team leaving for Hobart on Easter Sunday. The 180cm goalie, who is equally adept wearing both the goal attack and goal shooter bibs, has spent the past two years playing in the Garville intermediate side, travelling regularly to Adelaide to compete against the best the state has to offer in her age group. Irlam started netball at Moonta as an 8 year old and filled in at B grade level at age 14. “I had two years in a state development program and this will be my first trip away with a state team — it will be my first trip to Hobart as well,” Irlam said. “It’s great to make new friends and connections; I’d like to learn from the experience of playing in the nationals and further my netball. “Our state coach is Peta Maher, with Kim Hocking as her assistant. “I have also been selected in the Garville premier league squad, but wasn’t able to do the trials, as I had Covid at the time. “Pleasingly, I will be well over it by the time we catch the plane to Tasmania. “I want to thank our state league coach at Garville, Kirsty Leonard Down, for her support.” After starting her schooling at

Burra, Irlam spent years 1 to 10 at Moonta Area School and is currently doing year 11 at Immanuel College in Adelaide. During her time at the Moonta Netball Club, Irlam said she was lucky to have strong mentors in Sharon Nicholas and Sally Hackett. Irlam was a member of the Northern Regional Netball Academy from 2019 to 2021, and represented Yorke Peninsula at the annual state-wide Country Netball Championships at 13s level in 2017 and in the u15s team in 2019. Irlam was also a key part of the Moonta E grade title winning combination in 2019. When she was young Irlam looked up to former Adelaide Thunderbirds and Australian Diamonds player Renae Ingles (nee Hallinan). There are plenty of sporting genes in the family as well — dad Richard was an accomplished country footballer, while mum Petrice was a classy basketballer and netballer, as well as a jockey. Irlam’s oldest brother Tyson, now 26, played a season of SANFL league football for the Adelaide Crows and has been the on-field leader at the Willaston Football Club. Irlam’s other sibling Jack, 19, plays for Moonta but is sidelined at the moment with a shoulder Injury. “I just want to go as far as I can in the game and I really appreciate the support I receive from my family,” she said.

Please start thinking about your scribes for season 2022. The Yorke Peninsula Country Times kindly requests clubs provide reports for your YPFL A grade home game unless notified otherwise. YPCT will continue to follow the YPNA netball roster this season. All reports should be sent to editorial@ypct.com.au by 10am Mondays at the latest.

How to write your report:

STATE TEAM... Moonta’s Brooke Irlam has made the South Australian state 17 and under netball team heading to Hobart in April.

DO: z Include interesting passages of play — great goals, amazing defensive efforts, et cetera z Tell the readers how the game flowed — did one team start well and then the other make a comeback, for example? z Include players’ names to acknowledge noteworthy contributions z Feel free to provide your own best players, even if you saw it differently to those who were officially chosen DON’T: z Include quarter-by-quarter scores for the football (we already have those) z Go too far overboard criticising anyone — including the umpires! z Worry if you are not a brilliant writer — the important thing is that you tell us how the game went, so we can tell our readers, we can ‘tidy up’ your spelling and grammar if required
