MOONTA V CY COUGARS
REPORT BY
After a tumultuous year internally, the Moonta Football Club was like the phoenix that rose from the ashes to win the 2018 Yorke Peninsula FootbalL League flag on Saturday. The Demons annihilated the CY Cougars 15.12 (102) to 4.4 (28). The CY Cougars did not get away to a good start as they kicked with the wind to the eastern end of the ground and could only manage 1.1. Meanwhile the Moonta lads unleashed a torrent of attacks against the wind with the result of 4.1. The game opened with several forward forays for each side, the Cougars scoring at the sevenminute mark before Moonta replied a couple of minutes later. Moonta then ascended, scoring goals through Aidan Zwar, Lachlan Slack, Bailey Nicholas and Jonathon Ross. The Cougars attacked well but the wind proved to be their destroyer as it took balls kicked high for goals out of bounds and often on the full. This opening by Moonta was the undoing of the Cougars as they did not recover from the onslaught. The second term opened with the Cougar fans on a high as Lachlan Elliot goaled in the first minute of play, but that was short lived as Moonta broke free to score 3.4 for the term. Jed Woolford was playing well for the Cougars as he was more

determined at the ball than some of his teammates. Jesse Potts was the playmaker along with Adam Smyth who was doing everything right when the ball came near him. Moonta kept the ball in its forward lines for the most of the term to have a good lead at halftime. There were a couple of ministoushes in the third term but they led to nothing except getting the crowd excited hoping for something to happen. In this term it was evident the Cougars’ Kangur boys, Alek and Lukas, had been well and truly hobbled by their opponents Jake Turner and Joel Foster, despite trying hard. This is where Moonta won the game, keeping the Cougars’ two star players in check. The Dees scored two goals in this quarter and had the wind for the final term coming up. The game was virtually over except the Cougars would not lie down as they scored goals from
Reuben Parker and Potts. With a lead handy lead of 9.6 to 4.3 Moonta looked the goods and proved that in the final term as they ran away with the game scoring 6.6 to Cougars’ one point. The Cougars had run out of steam and were making simple errors. Hitting the post had been the order of the day right since the junior colts, and the A grade game featured four posters. I thought the work of Foster and Turner was the biggest point of the game. Lachlan Slack was on fire and kept an avenue open for the demons. Harry Vick on the wing played another fine game along with Josh Ramsey and Ross. Slack won the best on ground medal awarded by the umpires. For the Cougars my best went to Jason Carey with Jackson Bruce not far behind and Potts for four quarters of hard effort at the ball. Woolford was high in my count also.

After being top all season, the CMS Crows scored a brilliant win against the Wallaroo Bulldogs in very cold conditions at Minlaton on Saturday. The huge crowd had filled the parking spaces around the ground to capacity and the weather had calmed down although the wind was very strong, making scoring goals a difficult task. This was a hard game as players were confused by the strong wind and the boundary umpires were kept busy all game as many balls were whisked away with the breeze. The Crows kicked to the eastern end of the ground and Mitch Ryan at centre-half forward was in fine form along with Andrew Parsons and Sam Harris giving the forward lines a good boost. The Bulldogs struggled to get the ball forward and when they did they ran into Luke Brind and Liam Luke on the half-back line. Tim Nadich was trying hard for the Bulldogs but had a chance to score and kicked into the man on the mark. The ball was then taken away, leading to a goal from Ryan. Wallaroo made use of the wind to a degree in the second
term with goals from Matt Bodie and Dylan Weger whilst the only goal for the Crows came from Jamie Kemp to give them a slender lead at the long break. In the third term the Crows broke the mould and booted 4.1 from Angus Aldenhoven, Luke now on the ball, Tyronn Tilbrook and Ned Watters. Meanwhile Jamie Wharton was playing well for the Bulldogs along with the Errington boys, Tom and James, and Jesse May put in a starring performance. The wind was so strong one player had a kick 35 metres out directly in front of goal and the ball went out of bounds on the full on the half-forward lines. This was unreal, and caused a commotion amongst the crowd. The game ended with a dour final term as neither side could score a goal. My best for Wallaroo went to May for four quarters of consistent football along with Wharton and Zaine Holman. For the Crows, Liam Luke was a standout all day. Whether in defence or on the ball he played well as did Nicholas Clift and Sam Harris. This was an interesting match under the conditions but the Crows did not allow Wallaroo to get into the game at any stage.

The second match of the day was another final between the Southern Eagles and Bute/Paskeville. This game was almost a replay of the junior colts as the scores were low. The game was hard and fast considering the conditions. The Eagles kicked to the eastern end of the ground with the breeze in the first quarter but could only score one goal while the Saints also recorded a goal. Tom Robinson was playing well for the Eagles, sending them forward on numerous occasions. Lachlan Hoile tried to make use of the ball in the forward area. However, the Saints defenders
made the job hard for the Eagles to score as Alex Elsworthy was in everything along with Ben Larsson and Trent McCauley. Play was hard with tackling and the speed with which the ball was being moved around the ground, but scoring was rare as the wind kept taking the ball out of bounds when it was kicked high. Will Pearce was unfortunate to hit the post to give the Saints their only score for the term. Angus Nowlan was playing well for the Eagles along with Tom Davies who scored their only goal for the term. L Hoile made his presence felt all around the forward lines and with Robinson on fire in the centre of the ground the side looked good.
The Saints defenders did well to hold the Eagles at bay although in the Saints’ forward lines there was very little talk and players were competing against each other instead of the opposition. In the third term the Saints fell down in their effort to win the game but that was due to the conditions and the good defence by the Eagles. The Saints kicked a goal from Jordan Taylor in the first minute but from there on could only score points as they held the Eagles scoreless for the term. Dylan March, Lachlan Jones and Ben Larsson were playing well but all to no avail as the Eagles were denying them results in front of goal. Jacob Gutsche, Nowlan, Blake

Brunton and James Reuther were in everything and Daniel Tilbrook was working hard along with L Hoile. At the final change the Saints had their noses in front at 2.6 to 2.1. Unfortunately for the Eagles Will Taheny was stretchered from the ground at the first bounce of the final term with a head injury. This fired the Eagles to victory in respect of Taheny, as they ran away with the game to win 5.3 to Bute/Paske 3.9. The Saints kicked themselves out of the game in the second half by kicking 2.6 whilst the Eagles booted 3.2. Best on ground award by the umpires went to Jones from the Saints and my best for the Eagles went to Reuther.

What a way to start grand final day, with Bute/Paskeville defeating the Southern Eagles by one point and with a low score of 1.5 to 1.4. The day was cold and a strong wind favoured the northeastern end of the ground. Any high balls were just whisked away by the wind which made scoring goals very difficult. The Eagles kicked to the eastern end but could not make any headway apart from the first goal from Jordan Tilbrook at the eight-minute mark. Meanwhile the Saints managed a point into the wind. Koby Poulton and Charlie Hoile were combining well out of centre along with Tilbrook working hard in the forward lines. Will McKay was the first to score for the Saints when his shot hit the post. Jack Harris was playing well for the Saints along with the star for the day Anthony Bagnato and Ryan Bull in the centre of the ground. Play was very even in the second term as neither side could get a break and it was not until the nine-minute mark the Saints scored a point, hitting the post again. Connor Knight was playing well for the Saints, and also scored a point. The Saints’ goal came from Thomas Ey who went on to kick
another two points for the term to give his side a slight lead at halftime. The third quarter was even tighter as only one point was scored by the Eagles and that was a touched kick at goal. The rain and hail came and the temperature fell further as it was freezing and spectators scurried for cover. The Saints did not score for the term and led by one point coming into the final term. That was where the game stayed as neither side scored in the final term. The Eagles had a couple of chances but the Saints’ defence stood tall. Jackson Campbell was playing well along with Knight and Bagnato was playing brilliant football getting plenty of kicks but could not make any headway. Meanwhile the Eagles were trying as hard as ever and Hoile was in everything but Jack Harris had him covered most times. Adam Franke was playing well at full back along with Joshua Savage. The swelling crowd was brought to their feet urging their teams to score, all to no avail. The siren sounded and one of the lowest-scoring grand finals came to an end with Bute-Pasky home by one point. For the Eagles, Tilbrook and Koby Poulton did well. Best on ground went to A Bagnato with Hoile not far behind.

A grade CMS Crows v Paskeville Both the CMS Crows and Paskeville entered this game after good workouts against Moonta in the earlier finals. The weather was set to play a role with swirly wind, cold temperatures and some rain on the cards. Both sides also had to adjust their styles slightly for the Adelaide umpires. A large crowd witnessed the play start in sunshine and Pasky got the first intercept only for the Crows WD Lana Bennett to get it right back. Pasky rebounded a missed shot but deja vu occurred when Bennett intercepted again. After five shots, Pasky finally goaled. Crows’ goalies adjusted to the wind better perhaps due to the home ground advantage. A costly turnover in the Pasky goal circle resulted in Crows levelling the scores. Crows GS Bronwyn Farrow shot three straight goals as silly mistakes cost Pasky and the Crows’ goalies punished them. Quarter time: Crows 13, Pasky 7. Pasky made some changes as Jade Daniel was spelled, Christine Nicholson came on at WA and Lana Kaesler moved to C. The quarter started with a turnover opportunity but still the Pasky goalies struggled with the wind and couldn’t convert. Play in the centre area became very congested, all players playing tight netball and Crows defending fiercely. Pasky started to gel and got four straight goals to get to within two. It was game on! Again, four straight intercepts caused play to seesaw. Sisters Melissa and Lauren McSkimming teamed well in defence, and the two Crow goalies shot outstandingly. Pasky GS Fiona Bussenschutt had a great game directing her side, rebounding and getting her goals. Pasky got a little untidy and let Crows regain their previous lead. Halftime: Crows 23, Pasky 17. Pasky again made changes with Kaesler spelled, Daniel back on at centre, Bussenschutt out to GA and Lana Bagshaw to GS. Crows stayed unchanged. Again a missed Pasky goal led to the Crows being rewarded at the other end. Pasky bounced back with an intercept and a goal. Play was pretty physical and a few players hit the deck. Bagshaw had a bad fall, tried to continue but had injured her ankle and had to come off, Sarah Knight substituting on. Shortly after Pasky defence intercepted to give Knight her first goal and then she scored again. Pasky appeared to be cranking up but Crows were relentless — their defence was effective and their quick midcourt flew the ball down

the attack end and their goalies just didn’t miss. Pasky GD Amie Price came off after a tumble and the blood rule, so association B grade best and fairest Elise Burnell came on. After Pasky got the score back Crows found another gear to get the lead back to where it had been. A bandaged Price returned to the court. Three-quarter time: Crows 33, Pasky 27. To start the final quarter, Farrow shot well straight away. Crows had been unlucky in the finals in the past and were playing hungry netball. Their backing up was amazing and the goalies were on song. Pasky tried but just couldn’t capitalise on turnovers. A long throw by Daniel into Knight resulted in a timely Pasky goal. Two Crows players collided showing their intense desire to win the ball, but both were okay. Late in the quarter another collision resulted in Crows’ WA leaving the court with a blood rule, and she was clapped off for an outstanding game. Pasky tried gallantly but just couldn’t reel in the first-quarter deficit in an outstanding match. Congratulations to the Crows, winners 42-35. Best on court: Bronwyn Farrow.
B grade Southern Eagles vs CMS Crows This was a battle of the southern teams with rivals Southern Eagles and CMS Crows going head to head in yet another grand final. Crows started the game with the ball but Eagles scored the first goal. The weather wasn’t in the favour of the Eagles as the shooters struggled to get their goals in. Crows ended the quarter with a seven-goal lead thanks to their zone set up. Quarter time: Crows 10, Eagles 3. In the second quarter Eagles GD Emma Goldsmith and GK Rikki Barlow-Gill gave the Crows a hard time shooting as they picked off seemingly every pass and rebound. Barlow-Gill even refused to give up the ball as she tumbled over her opposition. Crows worked the ball down the court with ease giving them the lead by 10. Halftime: Crows 17, Eagles 7. Coming into the third quarter, Eagles put some fresh legs onto the court but it wasn’t enough as Crows were hungry for the ball. Crows GS Leah McDonnell displayed accurate shooting and got her team 12 goals ahead. Three-quarter time: Crows 26, Eagles 14. As the rain and hail started, neither side was ready to give up. Despite Eagles’ defence picking up on every loose ball, they didn’t match Crows’ clear leads down the court. Final scores: Crows 31, Eagles 19. Best on court: Tyla Cook.

Southern Eagles v Bute Friendly bantering between these sides started at the vote count a week earlier, when Bute GD Karlie Bettess won the C grade best and fairest and Eagles WA Leanne Goldsmith was runner-up, so this was always going be a fantastic game. The first quarter was basically goal for goal, both teams feeding well down the court and most of the action occurring in the goal circles. Despite tight defence by Eagles GK Anissa Thompson, Bute GS Olivia Zilm moved beautifully and could hardly miss. The centre/WA combination of Eagles Jennifer Eisner and Leanne Goldsmith worked brilliantly to deliver the ball to their goalies and helped give the Eagles the edge as the quarter closed. Quarter time: Eagles 14, Bute 11. In the second quarter Kaila Perriton came on in GK for Bute replacing Beck Crosby, but was unable to slow Eagles goalies Sarah Webster-Spratt and Charli McIntosh-Whitehouse. Eagles convincingly extended their lead to 28-17 by halftime. Eagles swapped WD Brittney Hendry for Jasmine Wilkinson in the third quarter and Bute brought Liz Humphries on at GA, replacing Samara Elsworthy, hoping to close the gap in scores. Humphries came out firing, attacking the ball and only slowed down for a minute when she came off for the blood rule with a scratch to her neck. Both teams worked strongly in the midcourt delivering the ball to their goal circles. Despite this even flow, Eagles continued to score well, further extending their lead. Three-quarter time: 43-26. Bute brought Elsworthy back on for the final quarter in GS. She had a battle on her hands against the quick hands of Eagles GK Thompson, but found her strength in holding her space firmly. The final quarter featured several turnovers in the midcourt from Bute WD Sarah Taylor and Eagles WD Jasmine Wilkinson. However, Eagles’ clean play and sharp passes meant they finished as they started, building on their lead all game. Final scores: Eagles worthy winners 58-36. Best on court: Sarah Webster-Spratt.
D grade Paskeville v CMS Crows Crows began with the centre pass and quickly scored through GS Mellanie Reppin. Paskeville was fumbly in its goal circle early in the game, turnovers allowing Crows to build a lead. Crows WD Gabrielle South had an excellent quarter, getting her hands to the ball lots and creating turnovers. Pressure over the ball in the back third from South, GD Keely Oliver, GK Jessica Reppin and centre Kristen Wilson was intense and enabled the Crows a 13-7 lead at quarter time. Paskeville made changes; coach Corinne Bussenschutt moved herself into GD, and brought on WA Dempsey Fuss and GA Leanne Wait. This new line-up began the second quarter well. Pasky regained possession in its back third and brought the ball down the court fluently to score. Bussenschutt at GD was the difference. South continued to get touches for Crows and turn the play over in
their favour. Paskeville centre Kathy Larsson was tenacious in her attack on the ball and close in her attention to Wilson, but did not intimidate her. Crows GA Jessica Walsh shot well from the opportunities she received. By halftime the scores were tied at 21-all. Crows turned over the first Paskeville centre pass of the quarter and extended the lead to two. An over-enthusiastic effort for an intercept by Bussenschutt took out Crows WA Tayla Bedding. This forced her off with a blood rule and Crows were not as balanced without her. Paskeville stretched its lead to three, but Crows managed to get scoring back on to centre passes. M Reppin made some beautiful possessions and goals in the circle. A time out late in the quarter seemed to interrupt the Crows’ momentum, Paskeville taking the lead 33-30 by three-quarter time. Paskeville had the first centre pass of the final term and quickly extended its lead to four. Crows lost possession a number of times allowing Paskeville to a sixgoal lead early in the quarter. A drag was called on Paskeville and Crows’ M Reppin quickly scored. GD Oliver was getting her fingers to lots of intercepts in the Paskeville circle, but soon enough the ball made it back down her end without the Crows scoring. Crows scored twice in a row late in the game with a contact on Wilson quickly capitalised by her goalies. When the whistle blew Paskeville had won 39-36, its strong second and third quarters being the difference. Best on court: Corinne Bussenschutt.
E grade Moonta v CY Cougars A big crowd came out in wet and windy weather to watch the CY Cougars and Moonta fight it out for the top prize. Cougars were keen to start well after losing to Moonta by 21 goals two weeks earlier. Cougars scored the first goal but Moonta responded quickly with GS Louanna Bagshaw shooting confidently. Soon the game settled. Moonta’s defence line was made to work hard and GD Emily Jolly made some great intercepts in the goal circle pressuring Cougars goalies Latoya Humes and Emma Rowe. Quarter time: Cougars 9, Moonta 8. The second quarter featured good, even netball with goals being scored by both teams again quickly. Cougars GK Lily Dyett made a great intercept in the goal circle sending the ball down to her goalies to score. Moonta then tried hard to stop the Cougars’ goal-scoring run and with Moonta GA Emma Prout working hard to keep her team in the game and even showing she’s a talented gymnast by demonstrating the splits. Halftime: Cougars 18, Moonta 14. Moonta switched its midcourt, bringing Brooke Irlam on to GK, whilst Cougars brought Havanah Smith on at centre and Hilary Longstaff at GK. Both Smith and Moonta centre Jaida Tabb created lots of drive down the court. Moonta goalies Prout and Bagshaw combined well in the circle to score a quick few goals. Cougars’ Emma combination (Rowe and WA Barnes) worked
extremely hard and with Humes’ strong hands under the ring Cougars scored five goals in a row. Moonta came back with GA Prout scoring a long bomb to settle and reinvigorate her team. Moonta’s hard work led to a run of goals. Three-quarter time: Cougars 26, Moonta 24. Cougars brought Georgia Hasting back on into centre and Dyett back to GK. Moonta was unchanged. Moonta came out hungry and turned the ball over and scored two quick goals to even the scores. Cougars’ attacking players had to work hard and were shown support by WD Mia Whittaker from the centre third. Lots of back-and-forth netball was showing just how even these two teams were and every pass was proving to be valuable. Cougars’ goalies then settled in to a nice rhythm on the back of a great turnover by GK Dyett and scored four goals in a row. Moonta got two back but it wasn’t enough. Final scores: Cougars 35, Moonta 33. Best on court: Hazel Bittner.
F grade CY Cougars v Moonta The undefeated Cougars won the toss with Alice Burrows taking the first centre pass and in less than 30 seconds had their first goal. Numerous turnovers followed, Cougars WD Molly Rowe and GK Hilary Longstaff preventing Moonta from converting. A blood rule on Moonta GA Brooke Irlam made it hard for Moonta to convert, but when she came back on Moonta scored two goals in a row. Following a tentative start by both teams the goals started to flow. Quarter time: Cougars 9, Moonta 7. A quick turnover led to the Cougars scoring the first two goals of the second quarter, GA Sophie Baker converting well. Cougars controlled the quarter with 10 goals to Moonta’s three, creating a nine-goal advantage at halftime. Both sides made changes in the third quarter. The quarter started well for Moonta GS Ella Aldridge who converted from her team’s first centre pass and followed up with another two goals. Moonta centre Mackenzie Jones and WD Tammin Hughes moved well, making it difficult for the Cougars to get their usual flow through the middle of the court. Moonta clawed back the lead slowly for the first half of the quarter, but the Cougars had a late run undoing all of Moonta’s good work. Cougars GS Burrows goaled from the edge of the circle on the timer to finish the quarter with her side up by 11. The last quarter was contested well, going goal for goal between the two sides. The match finished just before the rain with the final scores Cougars 39 to Moonta 29. Best on court: Havanah Smith.
G grade Kadina v Bute Kadina had the first centre pass in windy conditions in the G grade grand final at Minlaton. Bute scored first after some tight defence by Della Krieg and Tessa Paterson. Kadina’s centre court players worked hard to feed their goalies who scored three in a row. Bute’s goalies, Dayna Green and Laci Dayman, worked overtime with tight defence by Kadina’s
