From the farm to the marina BRENTON and Deb Pridham may not ever consider themselves “townies” but they are loving the lifestyle and their new home in the Copper Cove Marina after moving from the farm at Kulpara last month. They purchased the block about six years ago with the vision to move off-farm after their son Ashley married Hannah (nee Crosby). The family approached Kym White, White House Carpentry and Construction, to renovate the farmhouse and build the new home at the marina. The marina block was an extremely unique shape — 29 metres wide on the water side and six metres wide on the road — so required a custom design. “We went all local from using Statewide House Plans at Wallaroo who drew up the designs to White House Carpentry and
Construction who used all local tradies,” Brenton said. “They were all so approachable and we could contact them anytime if we wanted to check something.” The build took about 12 months but Brenton and Deb were very patient. “We weren’t in a hurry, we were doing one shift, this was it, we wanted it done properly,” Brenton said. One of the major criteria for the new home was it had to be light and bright. “As a child I would visit my auntie’s house and she had a beautiful sunroom facing east which was always filled with light and warmth as the sun came up,” Deb said. “I knew this had to be a feature of our house.” For those considering building, Brenton and Deb recommend being flexible. “You have to be prepared to make alterations as you
go along. We never had anything set in cement,” Deb said. They also said they went into the build prepared. “We did a lot of homework beforehand, we went to display homes and other homes Kym had built ... we visited the block a lot,” Brenton said. In planning the house, they considered the long term, including wider doors suitable for wheelchair access and making it as level as possible. “We look out across the water and absolutely love it,” Deborah said. “It’s like being on holidays all the time, it’s so quiet.” The Pridhams are looking forward to creating many happy memories in their new home, hopefully catching lots of fish when they take the boat out and swimming off the pontoon with the family in summer.
EXTRA NICHES... These wall niches are one of Deb’s favourite parts of her new home, the perfect place to display two special items brought home from holidays in Venice and New Zealand.
HOME SWEET HOME... Brenton and Deb Pridham have moved into their dream home in the Copper Cove Marina.

The Dunes Port Hughes ADVERTISING PROMOTION
DISPLAY HOME... Wahlstedt Quality Homes’ new display home, at the corner of Albatross Drive and Par Court, The Dunes Port Hughes.
The Dunes set for expansion PREMIER South Australian residential development The Dunes Port Hughes is set to expand to meet growing demand for prime coastal property. With spring in the air, interest is high in The Dunes development, which offers an attractive year-round holiday lifestyle. The development’s project consultant Kevin McGuinness says plans are well progressed for the opening of Stage 1C and that is generating a buzz and an increase in enquiries. “Stage 1C brings together the northern and southern ends of the development and also facilitates the development of a permanent clubhouse for the Greg Norman-designed championship golf course,” Kevin says. “Pre-sales have been progressing solidly and we’re expecting to formally launch that attractive element of the development in the coming months.” Stage 1C will comprise the release of 38 new allotments,
offering both traditional and golf course frontage options, together with a range of on-site works including removing overhead power lines and sealing additional roads. “It’s a significant milestone in the development, which opens up opportunities for progressing plans for the new clubhouse and future accommodation facilities.” Interest in The Dunes has grown solidly in recent years, with dozens of houses now built or under construction across the estate. “This project presents a fantastic opportunity for buyers to become part of a growing and vibrant coastal community, with all the lifestyle benefits of having the beach and a golf course on your back doorstep,” Kevin says. “Increased interest from buyers also comes on the back of significant local infrastructure projects nearing completion by the District Council of the Copper Coast. “These include an expansion
IT is important to prepare your garden for summer, Landart Landscapes’ Matt Leacy says. “Gardens are their most green, lively and productive in summer, just when the sun is at its harshest. “An important part of preparing your garden for summer is a thorough trim and tidy up after winter,” Matt says. “Ensure any ornamental grasses are cut to about 100200mm above the ground, any shrubs that like to flower in spring are pruned well before their flowering month, and make sure any weeds are completely removed. “Mulch provides insulation and is a handy way to keep your soil cool and moist while acting as a protective layer from the summer heat; it will also keep the weeds at bay.
“Remember to keep mulch away from the trunk or stem of the plant as excess moisture may cause the stems to rot. “A depth of around 70mm-100mm is good, and remember to keep topping it up as summer goes on. “Native species are built to survive the hot Australian climate, some are waterwise, and there is a lot less maintenance with these as they are rarely affected by pests and diseases. “Mixing native species with some exotic succulents can create some really interesting planting palettes with varying textures and colours. “If you are looking to add new plants to your garden for summer, it’s best to start early, so the plant has time to settle and gives it the best chance of surviving the summer heat.”
Get your pool cool-down ready
of the popular boat launching facilities and an upgrade to the road and bikeway between Moonta and Port Hughes. “The development has also recently launched a new Wahlstedt display home on the corner of Albatross Drive and Par
Court, with another planned for next year. “We’re really buoyed by the way this community is developing, it’s definitely creating its own energy as a desirable place to live.” Land prices start from as little as $77,500.
A KEY feature of many Australian yards is a pool and now’s the time to get your pool summer cooldown ready. While every pool has different considerations, Matt Leacy from Landart Land scapes has provided a go-to list to get your pool in top shape: Regular routine care Cleaning your pool can be a big job but is better spread into regular, little tasks. Regular maintenance will help keep your pools’ pH level neutral meaning only small corrections rather than large changes. If you have neglected your pool over winter, now is the time to start a new care routine. Invest in a pool cover A pool cover will protect your pool through the months it’s not in use, minimising evaporation and
keeping the sun at bay. Algae needs sunlight to bloom so if you can keep an even pH, and debris and sun to a minimum, the pool will need a lot less attention. Remove floating debris Use a long-handled net to help remove floating debris before it sinks and becomes harder to clean, and clean skimmer baskets at least once a week. Ensure the pH level is consistent Ensure the pH level of your pool remains between 7.2 and 7.8, which is a safe level for pool users. Make sure you have the right equipment and, if you are starting or updating your system, a mineral pool system is worth checking out, not only for your skin’s sake but also because it may save you time on maintenance as well, Matt says.
C R E AT I N G T O M O R R O W ’ S M E M O R I E S Remember family holidays on the Yorke Peninsula…..long fun summers, cooling-off in the water, sand castles, beach cricket, picnics, fishing off the jetty, melting ice-creams and fish and chips? Now imagine being able to rekindle those memories whenever the whim takes you. Create tomorrow’s memories at The Dunes at Port Hughes, with land prices starting from $77,500.

are key A PERFECT family home in the most sought-after area of town, is how Peter Tonkin from Professionals Yorketown describes 27 East Terrace, Minlaton. “The solid stone home with tiled roof faces the golf course, giving an enviable open space view,” Peter says. “The large dine-in kitchen features an induction cooktop, Miele electric oven and Smeg dishwasher. “A built-in reverse-cycle air-conditioner cools and heats the carpeted lounge, keeping the occupants comfortable. “There are three double bedrooms, all with carpet, and two have roller shutters fitted to the windows, and there’s a fourth bedroom/study at
the rear of the home. “The tiled bathroom is centrally located and has a shower and vanity. “The double garage is large enough to also utilise a portion as a workshop; attached is another storage room, which could easily be made into a man cave, and adjoining this room is another storage area. “A large concrete rainwater tank supplies the home with water and a chook shed and yard are tucked away alongside the garage. “Established fruit trees and gardens surround this fully-fenced home, which will appeal to a family or those looking for retirement.” Land size is about 1010sqm.

SPRING 2016
Emergence of the super kitchen A RECENT survey by Houzz.com.au revealed the emergence of the super kitchen. Modern kitchens incorporate features and functions associated with traditional living spaces, removing the boundaries between kitchens and the rest of the home. The survey found 49 per cent of homeowners use their kitchen space for entertaining, 43 per cent for socialising and 25 per cent as a homework space. “Buyers want more than a traditional kitchen, they want the kitchen to be the most important hub in the house to support everything, from family, baking and socialising, to working, watching TV and reading,” Vault Interiors director and principal stylist Justine Stedman says. Top tips for a super kitchen 1. Open up your kitchen to other living spaces such as lounge and dining areas, even outdoor entertainment areas. Also think about the
shape of the kitchen in relation to those other areas of the house. 2. Add features traditionally associated with living and dining areas. This may include dining spaces, aesthetic/decorative lighting, TVs and workspaces. Also add features that support entertaining such as wine fridges, dedicated areas for tea/coffee making, custommade cabinetry. 3. Go for neutral colours
most likely to stand the test of time: beige, grey and white for walls, white and medium to light wood tones for cabinets. White or black are most popular for counter tops. 4. Colour accents can be introduced through funky appliances like fridges, mixers, kettles and toasters. Canisters and fruit bowls can also be great colour pops or try some metallic or bright bar stools.

Simple tricks for a healthy lawn GET the jump on your neighbours this spring and have the best-looking lawn in the street with one simple turf care task — aeration. Australian lawn expert Ross Boyle said spring is the perfect time to aerate and inject a bit of life back into your lawn. “A simple garden fork can transform a compacted and struggling patch of lawn into a healthy outdoor space for the family to enjoy as the weather warms up,” Ross says. “Clean out your lawn of compacted soil, thatch and weeds that build up over the cooler months when your lawn is dormant.
Aerate in three simple steps: • Screwdriver test — After a while, the soil beneath your lawn can compact, blocking water, oxygen and sunlight from the root system. Push a screwdriver into your lawn; if it’s hard to push in, it’s time to aerate. • Aerating time — Using a garden fork, push down into the lawn 7cm-10cm deep. Simply repeat this at evenly-spaced 10cm-20cm intervals across your entire lawn. • Aerating machine — If your lawn is particularly large, or heavily compacted, it may be worth hiring an aerator to do the job faster and more effectively.
Email shane@enrgs.com
Bonus lawn care tips Weeding: Dig out winter weeds before they take hold in the warmer weather. If there are only a few, it’s best to dig them out by hand. But if your lawn is overrun, use a herbicide specifically suited to your turf variety. If you’re not sure, check with your local nursery or garden centre before spraying. Dethatching: Thatch is the build-up of old grass and mulch that sits in the under-layer of your lawn. Spring is the best time to remove it as the grass will regenerate in the warm weather. Simply lower your mower height by one notch when mowing, and keep lowering by a notch 2-3 times. You can also use a metal rake to dethatch if it is minor. For more tips, visit www.turf australia.com.au or like Lawnspiration on Facebook.
