THE 2021 Yorke Peninsula Field Days are going ahead, but not without the unique challenges the COVID-19 situation has dealt us. Notwithstanding, I welcome all of our exhibitors and visitors to this fantastic event. Over the three days there will be new and exciting displays on show, from blacksmith demonstrations, vintage crawler tractors, a tractor pull and spray unit demonstration, to the regular fashion parades, sheepdog and shearing demonstrations, guest speakers’ program and a variety of general interest stalls. The latest in farming technology, vehicles, caravans, boats and a range of other exhibitions will be on display. High yield potential across Yorke Peninsula Journalist: Fin Hansen CONSISTENT rain through autumn and winter has set up a bumper cropping season across Yorke Peninsula. Local grain growers have been delighted to see their crops beneﬁting from the moisture and gaining yield potential. Despite a dry lead-up to seeding, Paskeville farmer Adam Davies said the winter rain enabled even growth across his crops. “Our crops are all looking healthy now and some sunshine over the past couple of weeks has helped them grow quickly,” Adam said at the end of winter. “We’ve now ﬁnished tillering and spraying fungicides on cereals, and last week started spraying lentils. “It seems our yield potential is high with plenty of subsoil moisture.” Adam said a shortage of fungicide chemicals would be the only thing he had to complain about this year. “Good (cropping) seasons on the east and west coasts have led to a high demand for fungicides,” he said. “We’ve used our chemicals as if it was an

average season, but if we end up getting more rain than usual (requiring more fungicide), we may run out.” Ben Wundersitz’s farm Anna Binna, at Port Victoria, received 272.4 millimetres of rain to late August, the town’s most since 2016. “Overall, the season has been really good so far — our lentils are just about approaching canopy closure,” Ben said last month. “This year we’ve used Maximus barley and Leader lentils, which have both been promising. “One exciting factor about this season is the market is strong for just about all of our commodities. “There’s been a really good lentil demand with droughts in the United States and Canada this year.” Ben said many farmers still faced challenges with COVID-19. “The cost of shipping is really spooking the market, as container supply has dried up,” he said. “There have also been concerns with labour supply — COVID-19 is still causing lots of worries.” Yorketown growers, including Marty Collins,

have enjoyed a bumper season as the town has had 256mm of rain to late winter. “There was a pocket in Yorketown which was really dry early this season, meaning some crops were damaged as they didn’t germinate properly,” Marty said. “We had good results with new preemergent herbicide Overwatch controlling lots of weeds well. “Our lentils have really good potential this year and we started canopy closure spraying this week (late August). “Another 150mm would be great to ﬁnish off this year.”

Don’t miss these demos at this year’s ﬁeld days

PLAY IN THE HAY... Zara, Travis and Nate Clifford on their family’s farm.

A TRACTOR pull, antique Caterpillar machinery and artist blacksmith demonstrations will wow spectators of all ages at this year’s YP Field Days. For the first time since 1977, the field days will include a tractor pull, as vintage tractors see how far they can drag a sled. The further they travel, the heavier the sled becomes. In major competitions, tractors can feature four V8 engines and produce up to 1000-odd horsepower. The field days demonstration will have all of the fun without quite so much noise, as tractors from the 1940s to 1970s and their adoring owners take on the challenge. Mundoora’s Kelvin Stringer has helped YP Field Days demonstrations coordinator Paul Browning to re-establish the event. Kelvin hopes to create a tractor pull competition at Mundoora in the future, and the field days demonstration will help publicise that event, whilst no doubt proving

a hit with attendees. The tractor pull will run by Arthurton East Road, near Barossa Helicopters’ site, from 1pm daily. Before and after the tractor pull each day there will be demonstrations by the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club. Enthusiasts will drive their vintage Caterpillar machines around the area and shift some dirt, among other manoeuvres, with support from sponsor Hunts Fuel. These demonstrations will be held in the same area as the tractor pull, near Arthurton East Road, from 10.30am to 11.30am and 2pm to 3pm daily. Back by popular demand for 2021 is the Artist Blacksmiths Association of South Australia. You are invited to watch the blacksmiths work, and some of their pieces will also be for sale. The blacksmith demonstrations and sales will be based on South Hummocks Road, near Paskeville Canteen 1.

Encouraging kids’ cooking skills with Rebecca Sullivan GUEST SPEAKER

SPECIAL GUEST... Self-taught cook and entrepreneur Rebecca Sullivan will present ‘Encouraging cooking skills with children in the kitchen’ at this year’s YP Field Days.

REBECCA Sullivan is a self-taught cook and has worked with some of the world’s best food producers, academics, activists and chefs. Rebecca has worked on many projects any food lover would envy, from launching the Real Food Festival in London to being Taste Curator on Slow Food Nation in San Francisco. She has also farmed coffee in Uganda and taught scientists in the Maldives for the United Nations. The food curator, sustainable living advocate, author, regenerative farmer, teacher and entrepreneur founded Australian native wellbeing brand Warndu with her partner Damien. Rebecca completed her Masters in International Rural Development, Climate Change and Sustainable

Agriculture at the Royal Agricultural College in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, in 2010. During this, she focused on food security and a sustainable food future. Rebecca’s obsession with food began in Italy, inﬂuencing her to become interested in the slow food movement, for which she spent years as youth ambassador in the UK organising events, campaigns and more. After a decade working overseas, she has re-settled in Australia and has launched The Granny Skills Movement, which aims to protect the skills, heritage and traditions of our elders. As well as this, she consults to organisations, running events, catering, education and strategy work in and around the food,

environment and lifestyle sectors and sustainability. She teaches Natural Living and Cookery at River Cottage UK and The Agrarian Kitchen in Tasmania plus as part of the Food Entrepreneurship degree at Le Cordon Bleu Australia. Food garden expert helping educate the next generation GUEST SPEAKER AFTER studying a Bachelor of Management at university and starting a career in the ﬁnance industry, Rebecca Mumford decided she wanted to enter a career which gave back to the community, providing a strong sense of meaning, following the birth of her two daughters. The seed to grow Greenhill Living was planted after Rebecca helped her ﬁrst kindergarten and primary school establish their food gardens in 2009. Now almost 12 years on, Rebecca physically supports 22 educational sites to demonstrate the value of caring for our environment and aims to inspire many more. Helping to achieve many curriculum outcomes and learning framework objectives, Rebecca works with teachers and students keep food gardens in their outdoor learning environments growing throughout the year. The Greenhill Living

environmental education program for preschool and primary school students includes the interactive reading of self-published books, highlighting the life cycles of seasonal vegetables and pests and beneﬁcial insects in the garden. Rebecca’s publications include Gaye the Garden Girl, Gary the Garden Guy, Pete the Planting Pal, Bill the Bush Tucker Boy and many more. Rebecca has developed the Greenhill Living website, greenhillliving.com.au, with the aim of inspiring educators and parents to demonstrate the value in caring for our environment and provide the skills and knowledge to our next generation to survive and thrive in the future. “We all need food to live and real food to live well, so there is nothing more important to learn about than how food grows,” she said.

FASHION... Stylish Bird Boutique owner Jo Rodda will showcase the latest fashions, perfect for spring and summer, at the YP Field Days on Wednesday.

THE Guest Speaker Pavilion fashion parade, provided by Moonta business Stylish Bird Boutique, promises to be double the fun this year. Stylish Bird Boutique owner Jo Rodda said the fashion parade will be held twice on the Wednesday of the YP Field Days due to popular demand. “We held the fashion parade at the 2019 YP Field Days and it was very popular, so some people couldn’t get into the Guest Speaker Pavilion to see it,” Jo said. “This year that could have been the case again, especially with COVID-19 restrictions, so we are having two parades. “We are very excited to showcase a range of styles from the upcoming spring and summer collections. “We will have local models parading the clothing and accessories from varying ages, showcasing fashion from a broad size range.” Jo is passionate about styling and merchandising, and has worked in the retail industry for more than 40 years. She has enjoyed managing Stylish Bird Boutique for the past three-and-

a-half years and it has quickly become a favourite spot for fashionconscious women across Yorke Peninsula and beyond. Even though fashion parades have been few and far between due to the pandemic, Jo has held online “fashion parades” showcasing her shop’s exquisitely dressed mannequins to keep her customers amused and abreast of the latest trends during COVID-19. These videos have amassed hundreds of views, but Jo looks forward to running a real-life fashion show again at the field days. Jo said the fashion for this spring and summer is all about bold and gorgeous colour — strong pastels, ‘80s-inspired brights and touches of gold and silver. Prints include tropical, floral and geometrics, relaxed casual is a strong focus, and ruffles, flounces and amazing natural fibres are all going to be popular. “Top off your outfit with a pair of our soft leather summer shoes in fabulous colours and walk out the door happy,” Jo said. Founded in 1927 by Sofu Teshigahara, the Sogetsu School revolutionised classical ikebana practices by introducing unconventional materials into a modern and free approach to ﬂower arranging. Commencing Sogetsu ikebana studies in 1988, Yvonne has been awarded eight certiﬁcates in the discipline and currently holds a second grade teaching diploma (Nikyu Shihan). Having attended numerous master workshops since 1994, and exhibiting in Adelaide and interstate, she later began teaching on Yorke Peninsula and in Adelaide. Yvonne utilises elements of nature sculpted to create living art forms. “This has led to many years of gathering interesting unconventional materials, including shredded truck tyres, leather offcuts, discarded engineering materials, et cetera, to add to a growing collection, providing inspiration for new and exciting creations,” she said. “These materials allow diverse ikebana studies to be demonstrated, showing strongly sculptural and asymmetrical forms, and an

understanding of nature in all its beauty.” Over the years, Yvonne’s study of ikebana became a family involvement, with constructions in the farm workshop by husband Trevor and son Nick required from time to time, and family members bringing home collected items. “Highlights have included representing South Australia at the Floral Design Council of SA’s National Convention in 2001 as a guest demonstrator, interpreting their theme Federation of Australia,” she said. “In 2010, I was privileged to represent SA working with a team of 17 Japanese and Australian ikebana artists assisting Sogetsu School headmaster Akane Teshigahara perform a stage installation to celebrate Sydney’s Sogetsu 50th anniversary before a live audience, with a music and lights show completing the installation. “As ikebana has no limits in the use of materials, where it is displayed and under what circumstances, the inspiration and challenge are never ending to create arrangements expressing the beauty of nature.”

Official guest, John Olsen Journalist: Rhiannon Koch FORMER state premier, the Honourable John Olsen AO is the ofﬁcial guest of the 2021 Yorke Peninsula Field Days. John was mayor of the Corporation of Kadina and inaugural mayor of the District Council of NYP from 1976–79. He was also involved in the family business, J.R. Olsen and Sons, before becoming state opposition leader in 1982. In 1996, John became Premier, a role he held until 2001. John was appointed as Australian ConsulGeneral to Los Angeles from 2002 until 2006 and New York from 2006 to 2009. On his return to South Australia, he was named SANFL president and commission chairman, and last year became chairman of the Adelaide Football Club board. John said he looked forward to returning home, catching up with friends and almost reliving his earlier ﬁeld days experiences. “I can recall attending the YP Field Days when they rotated between being hosted by different farmers, such as Gordon Bruce at Alford, and the Bussenchutt and Rodda properties at Paskeville,”

he said. “I participated in the field days as an exhibitor during the time we lived in Kadina – originally my father and subsequently my brother and I participated. “The field days were recognised as amongst the best in Australia, showcasing the latest in farming technology and equipment.” John said the field days offered information and education in one spot. “They also provided an opportunity to compare different brands in the one location,” he said. “Given the significant development in farm machinery, and with the benefit of research, farming has become sophisticated, providing advanced techniques to maximise returns. “Internationally competitive markets have driven the need to be at best practice.” John said he hoped the field days would also give him and wife Julie a chance to reconnect with the community. “It will also give me an opportunity to discuss Aussie rules football at a local level as we navigate COVID-19 and the implications,” he said. “Team sport is an important part of the fabric of country life and needs to be protected and advanced.”

President Martin’s long involvement Journalist: Sonny Coombs YORKE Peninsula Field Days president Martin Kenny looks forward to seeing people at the biennial event after a tumultuous 2020. Martin said the country had been through a tough time with the 2019 bushfires followed by COVID-19. The YP Field Days provides an opportunity to showcase the latest innovations in a wide range of agricultural and related endeavours, as well as a chance for people to socialise. “Preparations are well underway; people will be looking forward to getting out and about,” Martin said. “There will be new innovations that exhibitors bring to us. “The interest has been really good and I would say it’s on track to be on par or even better than previous years. “The CEO has put a lot of work into a COVID management plan.” Martin became the Petersville Ag Bureau delegate on the field days committee in 2008, part of an involvement with the event spanning more than three decades. “When I came home to the farm in 1987, I joined the Petersville Ag Bureau and we used to go to the field

days site to do working bees and park cars,” he said. “In 2008 I became the delegate from Petersville for the general committee and eventually I was nominated for the junior vicepresident position. “That was a two-year stint followed by two years as vice-president and then in 2020 I was nominated as president.” Martin said he became the delegate because he believed the event was a great thing for the agricultural and wider community. “Things have changed quite a bit since I first got involved,” he said. “We have taken on digital technology for site bookings and we have online ticketing this year. “It has been a diverse event with something for everyone to look at for a long time and it’s a good thing not only for the ag community also the rest of the community. “There are always good spin-offs for businesses in the community with accommodation booked out and people looking for other things to do as well. “The thing I enjoy most is everyone working together to help make the event come together and make it the best it can be.”

Baaaaack again at the Murray Allen Wool and Sheep Pavilion THE Murray Allen Wool and Sheep Pavilion will again feature shearing demonstrations, fashion parades, junior sheep judging and much more at this year’s Yorke Peninsula Field Days. Murray Allen Wool and Sheep Pavilion coordinator Carolyn Johnson said wool and sheep had continued to be in demand and reliable for producers during the past two years. “COVID-19 has resulted in the world adopting technology at an increased rate and this has overﬂown into the agricultural sector,” she said. “With this in mind, we will have information available for people to learn more about the various ag tech opportunities the sheep industry has on offer. “As in previous years, we will continue to highlight the journey of wool from the sheep to the end user, and everything in between. “This will be highlighted by the fashion parade with some woolen garments featuring, along with clothes that appeal to the average rural person.” For the ﬁrst time, The Shearers Contracting Association of Australia will facilitate the shearing demonstration. “SCAA has taken over shearer and wool handling training in South Australia, so make sure you come and grab some information about the training courses available in SA,” Carolyn said. With the Wednesday traditionally being the busiest day of the Field Days, Farm VR (virtual reality) will be a feature in the pavilion. Tim Gentle and team have been working hard in the past few years to take their VR experience to another level along with the expansion of AR (augmented reality) technology. PASSION FOR FASHION... Nadia Stamp is again set to coordinate and emcee the YP Field Days fashion parade in what will be her seventh production at the event.

A CROWD favourite at the Yorke Peninsula Field Days, the fashion parades are set to again bring some wow factor to this year’s event. Media personality Nadia Stamp will coordinate her seventh production, sponsored by Southern Cross Television. “The shows are designed to provide a sneak preview of the hottest trends to hit the racks for spring and summer,” Nadia said. “We are hoping to inspire with the beautiful theme of ‘somewhere over the rainbow’, a chance for the audience to escape and enjoy a fun-filled show with plenty of local Australian fashion.” Nadia, a popular Adelaide model in her time, modelled at the field days fashion parades and Royal Adelaide Show, developing her passion for choreography and production. “I am the sole producer of the YP Field Days fashion parades,” she said. “I have a background in fashion and media presenting, featured on reality television, and I have recently launched a beauty brand called DIPD Nails, an at-home SNS nail salon kit.” Nadia said she loved visiting Yorke Peninsula and had a strong affiliation with wool as her great-grandfather Arthur GatesFenner was a chief wool expert of Elder Smith

and Co Ltd in 1896. “My passion for wool and sustainable ﬁbres has continued and I love having the opportunity to showcase Australian-grown wool and share its journey,” she said. “Each year, I acquire Australian labels and natural ﬁbres to include in the fashion parades. “This year I will feature Australian homegrown wool with a capsule from South Australian manufacturer Silver Fleece and have presence from the Australian Wool Network. “Each year I try to raise the bar by producing a new, modern take on fashion.” Nadia will feature in the fashion parades alongside Adelaide-based models from agency Finesse and local merino fashion designer and former model Emily Riggs. Kim Elise Cooper will perform music to accompany the parade. Designers to feature will include Silk Magnolia, Boutique Mon Ami, Review Australia, Ringers Western, Mickello, Romp Squad Apparel, and Love and is. “My parades are about connecting with the audience and inspiring them with new styles and looks, and making them excited for the seasons ahead from every day and country wear to formal and event looks,” Nadia said. “Special guests and beauty demonstrations will take place at the end of each parade.”

Lions Medical Research Foundation Journalist: Sonny Coombs OFFICIAL Charity of the 2021 Yorke Peninsula Field Days is the Lions Medical Research Foundation. The foundation’s funding was initially earned from the efforts of Lions across South Australia and the Northern Territory through what was the SA Lions Channel 7 Personality Awards Quest that ran from 1973–98. The foundation promotes, fosters and funds research and education into the prevention, detection and cure of disease. Its current form began in 1997, when took over managing the funds and broadened its focus to include all aspects of medical research and education. The foundation does this through supporting PhD research scholarships, promoting health education and a skin cancer screening program. The skin cancer screening project is a subgroup managed by the foundation since 2011. “Since 2011, more than 17,000 people have had free skin cancer screenings by professionally trained persons,” Kadina Lions Club’s Carol Barnes said. “Screening for skin cancers is not generally available to rural communities by other means and so we ﬁnd it a very valuable service and our rural Lions clubs, who manage the bookings, all agree. “The screening events predominantly occur in the rural and remote areas of South Australia and the Northern Territory. “Forty-three per cent of people screened had never had any form of

“In this way it directly works to improve health and health outcomes of our citizens. “Currently the skin cancer screening program receives most of its operating funds directly from Lions members and Lions clubs.” The Skin Cancer Screening Unit will operate at the YP Field Days, offering free skin cancer screening. “Being the major charity of the YP Field Days allows ongoing planning for

programs in coming years with a now known ability to meet the financial costs,” Carol said. “It allows the foundation breathing space in the ever-present requirement of searching for financial support. “The recognition of the LMRF by the YP Field Days committee and executive as a worthy recipient of funds they raise through their event is a very positive and affirming action.”

CLINTON farmer Matt Davey won the Award for Excellence in Technology during the Kondinin Group and ABC Rural 2020–21 Farmer of the Year awards at Parliament House, Canberra. Matt received national recognition for his outstanding approach to grain farming and his on-farm ag-tech adoption. “Ag technology is really big everywhere now, so it’s a huge honour,” he said. Matt also earned a top-four ﬁnish for Australian Farmer of the Year, after being nominated by a couple of friends. He said his recent on-farm success had come down to a combination of his practices. “We’ve been using a lot of precision ag by doing trials,

geo-locating data, and back and forth testing to report to our supplying companies,” Matt said. “We have also upgraded lots of machinery instead of buying it new, meaning we often spend tens of thousands of dollars instead of hundreds of thousands.” Mr Davey said his up-to-date technology had led to improved cropping results. “There’s deﬁnitely value in what we’re doing,” he said. “Although we’ve had a couple of drier seasons recently, testing and trialling has allowed us to have good results. “The big gains in productivity were made on our farm in the early 2000s, it’s now just a matter of making the one-two per cent improvements.”

Journalist: Rhiannon Koch ON paper, fat farmers and growth may not seem like a positive combination. But it is when you’re talking about the Fat Farmers — Rural Health Initiative and its continued growth during the past decade. Locals including Ben Wundersitz, Greg Hean and Scott Hoyle started the first Fat Farmers group in 2010 as a way to get a little more active. There are now 12 groups across the state, including three on Yorke Peninsula. Members catch up regularly for fitness activities, and the groups come together for the City to Bay Fun Run. “Slowly but surely we’ve increased our local members and eventually I thought what a great thing, we should be able to spread this to farmers right across the state,” Ben said. “Some of the benefits during the day as a farmer are you feel better and you certainly don’t puff as much. “Our strongest message is doing some physical

exercise, joining in with others and just feeling a lot better about yourself. “What we learned along the way, I suppose, is the link between physical exercise and better mental health.” New executive ofﬁcer, Tessa Colliver, knows the importance of mental health awareness as an inaugural member of the SOS Yorkes Suicide Prevention Network. SOS Yorkes and Fat Farmers partnered to host The Naked Farmer Ben Brooksby for a mental health awareness night last year. “The mental health beneﬁts have been part of it since early on — The Naked Farmer visit was just an opportunity that happened to present itself,” Tessa said. “But certainly the conversations it started around mental health and particularly Ben Brooksby’s story were very powerful. “Fat Farmers has certainly grown beyond just a few guys at Maitland and that is something we are keen to focus on moving forward. “We want to see more groups across rural and regional SA — and that will

very much be a focus over the next 12–18 months.” For many, the social interactions during and after exercise are just as important as the workouts. “Fat Farmers is a fantastic concept as it gets blokes — and others, some groups are mixed, some are men only — together for regular exercise and social interaction which has enormous beneﬁts for overall health and wellbeing,” Tessa said. “I think the bottom line is if you are getting regular exercise and social interaction you are much less likely to suffer from mental health issues. “In fact, I believe scientiﬁc research has shown regular exercise can help improve issues such as depression and anxiety in some people. “And social isolation is often a key factor for those suffering from mental ill-health. “So overall, Fat Farmers also helps create more resilient rural communities.” The Fat Farmers will have a presence at the YP Field Days this year, spending time at platinum partner Ramsey Bros’ stand.

Boarding at Seymour has been a wonderful experience, with memories that will last a lifetime. Being at Seymour has allowed me to make new friends from different states and countries, while receiving an education of the highest standard. I found the transition into the Boarding House and school amazing. I am always surrounded by new and old girls who continuously support me in both the Boarding House and day school. Not only are the girls a fantastic support, but the staff in the Boarding House and day school are continuously supporting students throughout their schooling years. Academically, the Boarding House offers tutors four days a week who can help students on a general basis with all subjects, but who also specialise in science and math. The teachers in the day school are always encouraging me to do my best and always make time to meet with me during recess, lunch and before and after school. Being at Seymour, I have been able to be involved in many co-curricular activities I would not have been able to do in my local area. I have extended my love of sport through participating in sports that are not offered at home. Some of these are touch rugby, volleyball, rowing, and water polo, but there are plenty more. Not only have I been able to play more sports, but boarding has given me opportunities I am forever grateful for, like participating in service

I have grown and planted trees to help revegetate bushﬁre-affected areas and participated in cooking and ﬂoral art activities in the Boarding House on weekends. These activities have helped me develop my

relationships with others in the Boarding House and gain new skills. I think boarding is an opportunity that has helped me ﬁnd who I am and succeed in my education. I would not trade the Seymour boarding experience for any other.

Importance of women in ag Journalist: Rhiannon Koch THERE’S no denying the importance of women to the agriculture industry. But local Charlotte Wundersitz is encouraging young women to be involved in the succession planning of their family farms. “Growing up on the farm was all we knew, it was what we did for fun and we watched Mum and Dad do the work,” she said. “All our free time was spent outside watching or helping where we could. “But I never really looked at what they were doing and considered it as something for myself.” Charlotte ﬁnished school and spent a working gap year abroad, and it was on her return home she started to think about the possibilities. “I had a great time, but I realised how much I loved it,” she said. “I did some seasonal work with Viterra and it showed me a side to the industry I hadn’t seen before, something I was keen to know more about.” Charlotte had started studying a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Adelaide but decided to do a couple more seasons at Viterra, before also spending a season at her family’s farming enterprise Anna Binna with her dad.

“I did get my truck licence but spent more time in the office learning more about the business side of things than operating them,” she said. “I recognise I am quite lucky to be able to contribute in this way, because of our farm’s size and structure.” It all went from there and Charlotte is also studying a Bachelor of Agricultural Business Management remotely through Charles Sturt University. “I think I’ve been lucky with the way the business is set up, so while I’ve been finishing my study I’ve been doing the social media side of things and am still in Adelaide,” she said. “I’m not sure where exactly I see myself once I’m finished, I can see myself more so contributing to the business side of things. “I know I love being home doing harvest, and there’s a few years until it comes to that but I’m looking forward to working with both my parents and I’ll see what role I can carve out for myself.” While women have only legally been recognised as farmers for the past 25 years, Charlotte said the influence of women in the industry runs deep. “They’ve been contributing to farming in so many ways for so many years,” she said. “Women’s roles in family farming enterprises tend to be underestimated,

under-appreciated and underrecognised. “Yes, we need more women in ag, but we also need to better recognise the fundamental contributions to family farms made by women currently and historically, whether that is driving a header, managing the business, marketing or accounts, keeping a household running, or taking on extra caring responsibilities to keep the family unit running. “I’ve always been a strong feminist, I’ve always been interested in equality and just hate the idea that young women don’t know what they’re missing out on in terms of the diverse opportunities in South Australian agriculture. “Different perspectives help in creating different solutions and help bring us closer to food security and addressing issues like skilled worker shortages and climate change.” Through her work with Grain Producers SA, Charlotte was involved in the development of the SA Grain Industry Blueprint. “I feel so grateful for the opportunity as it gave me a crash course in how the industry, supply chains and market operate,” she said. “I’m excited for the next 10 years, there’s so much opportunity and progress to come.”

Red Cross leading disaster recovery THE Australian Red Cross will be at this year’s Yorke Peninsula Field Days and is inviting the public to meet the team for a cuppa and a chat. Bushﬁre recovery from the 2019– 20 Black Summer Fires and the longer-term drought in the northern regions, and preparedness for the future has been a key focus for community support from the Australian Red Cross emergency services team across the Yorke Peninsula, Eyre Peninsula and Mid North. The SA emergency services team has facilitated ongoing outreach help utilising the depth of experience and training of volunteers who’ve made themselves available for psychosocial support for community members. Community events are a key component of a resilient community and the YP Red Cross team has hosted pamper days for women, supported emergency preparedness workshops across the peninsula, and presented the primary school-focused Pillowcase Project in September. First aid for farmers has been a key focus for those impacted by drought and bushﬁres, and has been

delivered on site in the Mid North and Yorke Peninsula in 2021. This valuable service will continue in the future. The Red Cross emergency services operations team has provided immediate state-wide support when an emergency activation occurs, such as in the aftermath of the Black Summer ﬁres and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The team offers diverse services, from face-to-face support at an emergency relief centre to longer-term phone support to vulnerable community members. Community resilience is a key focus. New roles are being developed to work across Yorke Peninsula and the Mid North to help communities develop and strengthen their own resilience. The Port Pirie regional team is active on Eyre Peninsula, with staff supporting community justice, providing a well-supported transport network, and active in developing a resilient EP community. Red Cross will be on site at the YP Field Days at Site 362A Wintanerta Road.

Hot rural land market across YP Journalist: Fin Hansen

STRONG seasonal conditions have kept rural land in high demand on the Yorke Peninsula this year. After promising harvest results last season, conﬁdence has remained solid, leading to continued strong interest in YP land. A recent Nutrien Harcourts Rural Market Update stated there had been fantastic sales and lease results in an open market earlier this year. “With extremely low supply and high demand, strong results continue to be achieved with interested parties missing out on each occasion,” the update read. “(The high demand) drives the next opportunity to another strong result, almost always surpassing the previous outcome. “This imbalance of supply and demand, together with rainfall reliability and low interest rates, will continue an extremely hot rural property market on the YP.” The market update said negotiations for private deals had continued, generally selling for considerably less than comparable sales in the region. “Without creating competitive tension by taking a property to the open market, you will never know whether you have obtained the best possible outcome for your property,” the update read. Nutrien sales specialist Troy Goldsworthy said consistent, widespread rainfall and steady low interest rates look like keeping land in high demand and delivering strong

results in the upcoming season. “Prices have been going up sale after sale, so we’ve had a situation of low supply and high demand for a while now,” Troy said. “Interest rates seem like they’ll be staying the same for some time, which makes buying an attractive option. “There’s no better time to buy – the prices reﬂect the reliability of the YP, as we’re not missing out on too many seasons. “While prices are surging, it’s a great environment to increase your land holding.” Minlaton farmer Michael Thompson has purchased additional land annually for multiple seasons, including 264 hectares worth $4.37 million near Stansbury earlier this year. Michael estimated his land prices had experienced 20 per cent year-onyear increases in recent seasons. “There are some areas down the bottom end (of YP) that have had even bigger growth due to changes in farming practices over the past 10 years,” he said. “Auctions are creating a lot of interest with many registered bidders and several active bidders at every sale.” Michael said land purchases are often solid investments for agribusinesses looking to grow. “Interest rates, commodity pricing, input costs and seasonal (conditions) are all looking good,” he said. “Everyone’s approach to risk is different and purchasing land can be a big expense but over a 10-year cycle it will rarely be a regrettable decision.”

Looking back on the 2019 ﬁeld days Journalist: Jess Liddy YORKE Peninsula Field Days is one of Australia’s major agriculture events, as was evident last time around, in 2019. The three-day biennial event can attract up to 30,000 visitors from across the country thanks to the vast variety of exhibitors and activities the whole family can enjoy. Communication has changed immensely in recent years with organisers adding electronic services and social media platforms. The agricultural sector has embraced these changes, but the YP Field Days’ bread and butter is still providing an outlet for people to have meaningful face-to-face interaction with others, at a business level and on a social basis. CEO Peter Anderson said the 2019 event was successful, with attendance up on 2017. “We had about 650 exhibitors with more than 20,000 people through the gate over the three days,” Mr Anderson said. “Overall, we couldn’t have been happier with how it went — there were no issues and it seemed to run well.” Across the YP Field Days’ 30-hectare Paskeville site, visitors can

explore extensive displays of the latest agriculture machinery and equipment, technology, information and services, food and refreshments, and much more. “Like most ﬁeld days events, we offer lots of different general interest exhibits, fashion parades, vintage machinery and guest speakers,” Mr Anderson said. “We like to ensure we offer a bit of everything for everyone.” Mr Anderson said this year’s event would shine a light on families and keeping the children entertained. “We are hosting a children’s trail, similar to the Yellow Brick Road, where they can follow a map and pick up knickknacks around the site from various exhibitors,” he said. “There will be crowd favourites including blacksmith events, tractor pull, vintage tractors, shearing demonstrations and so on. “We just want to remind everyone to be COVID-safe, use the QR codes to check in and remain socially distanced where you can for the safety of everyone. “We’re really looking forward to many great YP Field Days events for years to come.”

services What you need to know Courtesy bus: A free 48-seat passenger bus leaves the car park opposite the Kadina Caltex/Subway service station (Frances Terrace) at 8.30am, Wallaroo Town Hall 8.45am and Moonta Town Hall 9am on each day of the Yorke Peninsula Field Days. The bus will leave the front gate of the YP Field Days at 4pm for passengers returning to the three towns. This service is provided by the YP Field Days and run by Yorke Peninsula Coaches, phone 8821 2755. For more information contact the YP Field Days office on 8827 2040. On-site courtesy buses: Courtesy buses will operate from designated bus stops within the YP Field Days site at regular intervals each day. The courtesy buses will also provide transport to and from car parks as required. Aircraft landing: Light aircraft travelling to the YP Field Days at Paskeville can use the Copper Coast Aerodrome all-weather airﬁeld located between Kadina and Wallaroo about 20 kilometres west of the YP Field Days site. Pilot information and off-apron parking details are available from the Copper Coast Council, call 8828 1200. YP Field Days will provide a free courtesy bus service which will be available at regular intervals for pick up and return of aircraft passengers. Anyone wishing to use this service should give prior notice of their estimated time of arrival by phoning the YP Field Days office on 8827 2040.

Disabled parking

Want to buy something but it’s too big to carry? Use our free parcel pick up service. Parcel pick-up dockets will be available at exhibitor sites. Bookings to use the service must be made at the parcel pick-up office at the Mackley Road (side door) entrance of the Larwood Pavilion. Please allow time for the goods to be picked up from their point of purchase and delivered to the parcel pick-up depots located at the site entrance gates in the western and eastern carparks.

Emergency services Should you require the assistance of St John ﬁrst aid, police or emergency services, they are located by the main front gate on Office Road.

Areas have been set aside for people holding disabled parking permits and are located at the main gate and on the northern side of the main eastern and western entrances. Look for the disabled parking signs on the site map.

A temporary parenting facility with ready access to a toilet and baby changing, feeding and rest areas is located on the corner of Office and Paskeville Roads.

Rest areas No dogs allowed on site Please don’t bring your dog with you as due to public health and safety issues, NO DOGS will be allowed on the YP Field Days site with the exception of guide dogs, hearing dogs and speciﬁc dogs which are part of the YP Field Days event program.

Bruce’s ongoing dedication Journalist: Jess Liddy BRUCE Philbey experienced his first Yorke Peninsula Field Days in 1971 and hasn’t looked back since. Bruce said the event has been a great opportunity to see agricultural displays and machinery in the one place, and is quite stimulating for someone in the industry. “It was exciting to see the new machinery available, as well as the advancement in technology when I first attended the field days,” Bruce said. “It has only gotten better year after year. “About 10 years ago I joined the field days committee because it was a way for me to connect to the community whilst also doing something I was familiar with. “I am still on the committee now — I have taken up leadership roles including junior vice-president and then I was president for two years, including during the 2019 event. “I will be looking at stepping back from the role in a few years but we need younger people to step up. “I will always continue to support the event though.” Bruce said the field days was a huge event run by a “team of teams”. “There is a team of caterers, a team to

organise the guest speakers and to book the exhibitors, and to organise the gatekeepers and the tickets,” he said. “There is just so much behind-thescenes work that goes into this event. “All these people combined are the reason the field days comes together every two years.” Bruce enjoys the social interaction and opportunity for face-to-face communication with farming product and service representatives at the field days. “I enjoy farming on the peninsula because it’s a reliable district well serviced by machinery providers and associated services,” he said. “The field days brings people together, whether you are learning about agriculture, already in the industry or not at all.” Bruce has also been in the Bute Agricultural Bureau for more than 40 years. “This is one of the biggest changes we are seeing in the industry and when it comes to the field days,” he said. “The younger farmers are looking at different ways to source their information rather than joining and attending bureau meetings. “We would love to see bureaus exist in the future but the numbers are dwindling fast.”

WILDERNESS School was founded by the Misses Brown, four sisters who paved the way for girls’ education in South Australia. In 2021, the sisterhood has continued with nine girls joining their older sisters as boarders at the school. To date, this is the greatest number of sisters residing together in the Boarding House since its opening in 1893. At Wilderness, we feel extremely privileged when a family entrusts us with the care of their child, and we feel even more blessed when siblings follow to join the Wilderness family. We strongly believe boarding is a shared experience for the entire family. When one member leaves home to attend boarding school, it is a signiﬁcant adjustment for everyone, including younger siblings who remain at home. The sense of sisterhood and lifelong friendships boarders experience is well documented, but what is the impact of sibling relationships when they share time in a boarding environment? While boarding together as sisters doesn’t entirely mirror

their nuclear family life, having a sibling in the nearby corridor can be a great comfort and support. Head of boarding Rosie Broderick said, like with all sibling relationships, having a sister in the Boarding House can stir the occasional annoyance, but ultimately it creates stronger relationships and lifelong friendships. “Boarders in general share a unique bond,” she said. “They defend each other at the slightest need. “This collective shield has received an added layer of protection with the bond of these sisters.” The expansion of friendship groups beyond their year levels has been a common theme for all the sisters. They found having a sibling in a different year level helped them to get to know girls better across the depth of the boarding community. The nuances and memories that are quintessential to boarding life are not only shared with their peers, but also with their sister. Together, we hope they keep these special and nostalgic memories for many years to come and look forward to seeing them grow and support each other along the way.

Markets opening up for alpaca breeders Journalist: Jenny Oldland MARK Short and Dee Finlay from Alpacas Chaparral are like many others in the industry reaping the rewards of a world shortage of live animals and their fleece. “New export opportunities through a friend have seen us ship three live animals to South Korea and two to Taiwan, with the possibility of another shipment to China in the future,” Mark said. “Fleeces too are being sent from Australia around the world with multiple colours fetching good prices, with those in the super fine category selling for as much as $50 per kilogram. “Our buyer is currently exporting fleeces to buyers in Canada, New Zealand, Germany and Italy to be used for everything from high-end fashion clothing to quilts. “Nothing gets wasted, even the sweepings off the shearing shed floor, which go off to be made into pink batt insulation used throughout Europe. “There just aren’t enough alpacas at the moment and while Peru, the main source of stock, has around four million animals they have a high mortality rate due to the harsh desert conditions.” Due to the shortage, Mark was recently involved in an epic 72-hour trip when asked to help a friend deliver 140 alpacas from Australia and New Zealand to Amsterdam.

“Instead of people and suitcases, it’s all cargo, and onboard the jumbo jet we had a half a load of stock with two grooms to feed and water the alpacas, and another two for six mares travelling from Melbourne, along with the three pilots,” he said. “It was an interesting trip and we just saw the airports, even collecting more water from the tarmac with airport staff not allowed on the plane due to COVID-19 restrictions, then of course once we landed back in Perth it was straight into two weeks’ quarantine. “It certainly was an experience.” Locally, business has been good, with a positive reaction after Alpacas Chaparral’s appearance on South Aussie with Cosi. “We’re certainly looking forward to the YP Field Days, and quickly jumped on board when Lyall Schulz contacted us about being part of the Y3P group display again this year,” Mark said.

FARMER TO WINE MAKER... The peninsula’s “accidental” wine maker Lyall Schulz, from Barley Stacks Wines.

VINES for Yorke Peninsula’s first commercial vineyard in the traditional barley belt south of Maitland were planted by the Gregory family in 1996. From then on, Barley Stacks Wines quickly gained a reputation for producing premium wines. Since 2008 Lyall Schulz has been the driving force behind the winery’s expansion, but just what prompted a local barley grower to buy a winery? “It was simple basics really, we were leasing the land and because Rod (Gregory) was unable to find a buyer for the winery he decided to sell the entire property,” Lyall said. “For us it was too good an opportunity (to miss), and basically that’s how I became involved in an industry that is worlds apart. “I knew nothing about wine making. “While I am still heavily involved in the farm, the winery is all consuming — I tell people I’ve had to create eight day weeks with 25 hour days to fit it all in!” Lyall describes the enterprise as a one-stop shop with the grapes crushed, fermented, stored and bottled on site. Previous experience in event management has allowed this area of the business grow

exponentially. “This business is now ﬁring and it’s exciting,” Lyall said. “COVID-19 has actually done us and Yorke Peninsula as a whole a huge favour, with more people deciding to travel around their own backyard. “In the past 12 months we’ve had 8500 people through the door, pre-COVID it was around 2500 (annually). “Certainly the growth in the past two to three years has made this place worthwhile. “We love organising big events and to be asked to host the regional tourism awards was a source of great pride. “It conﬁrmed the decision to market Barley Stacks as a function centre was the right one. “You need a good team to make a place like this work and that’s where Brooklyn, Carley, Nicola, Danielle and Jessica come in — it’s a hands-on process right the way through and, whether it’s digging postholes and getting dirty or getting glammed up for a big event, they do a great job. “We are also about taking the time to sit and talk to people, showcasing the whole farming industry not just our wine. “Every year is different and our vintages dictate our wine. “We say we don’t do tastings but rather wine journeys, letting our staff tell the story.”

This year’s field days will be different as the group navigates the new rules and restrictions but there’s no doubt they’ll all be eager to share their products and local knowledge.

Uniform approach to farm firefighting units THE CFS is trialling a state-wide program for the registration and coverage of farm firefighting units (FFUs). If you own or would like to operate a unit, talk to the CFS crew at the CFS stand at the YP Field Days. About the program Since the beginning of CFS, and well before, the farm firefighting community has provided a quick response to the early stages of a fire, active firefighting during blazes, and continued monitoring after emergency services have handed properties back to their owners. The value of farm firefighting units has been recognised in inquiries. In fact, these inquiries identified the need to better coordinate farm firefighting units with emergency services to ensure a common approach as well as the safety and welfare of everyone on the fireground. To better coordinate FFUs, wherever they join the CFS on the fireground, the CFS is trialling a program for the 2021–22 Fire Danger Season. Operators are invited to register their units and find more details about the program at cfs.sa.gov.au/farms.

FARM UNITS... A trial will help the CFS and farmers work together better. Farmers who provide proof of FFU registration, or register at the Field Days CFS stand, will be placed in the draw to win a complete set of Wildland firefighting personal protective clothing, including coat, pants, gloves and goggles. Registered operators logged onto a fireground, and while operating with CFS crews, will be included in catering, welfare, water supply, insurance and safety arrangements. The system will be trialled until the end of the season, with ongoing feedback sought to ensure FFU operators are part of the CFS response to fires across the state.

Leadership and mentoring BOARDING at Walford is a special experience for the girls who come from rural South Australia, across the border and from overseas to study and live at the school. The Bra Lady, on the road again

SHE’S BACK...The Bra Lady, Michelle Turner, ready to head off from her Edithburgh home and to the Yorke Peninsula Field Days — her first foray on the road for almost 18 months. Journalist: Jenny Oldland MICHELLE Turner, known by women around the state as The Bra Lady, is ready to load up her van and hit the road again after COVID-19 lockdowns put the brakes on much of her business. For the past 12 years, Michelle has been a regular at the Paskeville, Barmera, Lucindale and Cleve field days as well breast cancer fundraisers and private events around the state. She said her distinctive van had been a magnet wherever she went for the past nine years. “I’d normally clock up thousands of kilometres in a year and there’s no doubt I have, like many others, had to change my whole way of trading,” she said. “My first road trip was to a breakfast meeting at Kadina where McGrath Foundation breast care nurse Kim Gloyn spoke. “This was followed by a week spent travelling around the peninsula and it’s just snowballed from there.” Michelle was trained by well-known brand Hickory, and this involved a three-year bra fitting course. She has now spent 41 years in the industry and is

one of the last professionals in this field. “It really is all about making people feel welcome and comfortable and listening to individual needs and yes, I just love what I do,” she said. “I also work a lot with women who have had breast cancer, which involves not only mentoring my clients but also their husbands and children at times.” A country girl at heart, having been bought up at Port Pirie and spent time on a family farm, until recently Michelle called Adelaide home. Three years ago, she made tracks to Edithburgh and set up shop in the town’s main street. The success of the business has now allowed her to purchase the property and move to the area permanently with her partner, local farmer Peter Johnson. “Apart from travellers passing through, a lot of my regulars now travel down here for fittings,” Michelle said. “One group from Wallaroo even brought along a cheese platter and champagne! “I am looking forward to the Paskeville field days — it is full on but it’s a chance to catch up with my country mates and really it is like one big happy family.”

EIGHT additional bed licences secured in the latest Aged Care Approvals Round will ensure Barunga Village in Port Broughton can continue to offer premium residential care. This will increase the capacity of Barunga Village’s residential aged care facility, Barunga Homes, from 75 beds to 83. Barunga Village recently completed a purpose-built facility for people living with dementia which included three individual homes to cater for the different stages of dementia, allowing likeminded people to live together. “We look forward to opening our third home and extending our unique specialised model of care to house members moving into Renni House,” Mrs Hewett said. Dealing with the realities of life on the land, our boys know about the importance of resilience and perseverance. Recent times have provided their fair share of challenges, but as a college and a boarding community, there is no doubt the experience has brought us closer together. Our Boarding House provides a home away from home for 150 boys from rural South Australia, interstate and overseas, and we are particularly proud to have been able to keep our Boarding House open continuously since the start of the 2020. Undoubtedly, this has been due to two factors — the tireless efforts of our committed boarding staff and the quality and ﬂexibility of facilities our new Boarding House (opened in mid-2019) provides. In addition, our Outdoor Education Centres at Scotts Creek on the Murray River and Wambana at Point Turton have provided a welcome distraction for the boys during term breaks. It is difﬁcult to predict what challenges the remainder 2021 and beyond will bring, but it is comforting to know, whatever they may be, our boarding students have the support, and are equipped with the tools, to face them head on. EnviroCopper – a new way to extract copper AT the heritage mining town Kapunda, in-situ recovery specialist EnviroCopper is exploring new ways to extract copper from the historic site. An estimated 119,000 tonnes of copper remain at the home of Australia’s ﬁrst signiﬁcant copper discovery, which may potentially be extracted using a lower impact, more environmentally friendly method known as in-situ recovery — also referred to as “keyhole” mining. “As it involves no physical movement of rock, no opencut pits, nor waste dumps nor tailings dams, it is likely to be more amenable to stakeholders and communities as it can be carried out in conjunction with other land use activities like farming and tourism,” EnviroCopper’s Philippa Faulkner said. “Our research with CSIRO

and the University of Adelaide in the past four years has advanced our existing knowledge of ISR to be more socially acceptable. “This has involved testing environmentally benign solutions that extract copper via a series of water bores and innovative 3D computer modelling to map the process underground. “Light Regional Council and the local community are open to this type of potential mining development again.” EnviroCopper is planning to take the Kapunda learnings to its second project, north of Kadina, where it considers working with lcommunity members and farmers to be imperative. “The journey at Kapunda has been about listening to concerns and educating people of the process,” Philippa said. “The copper at Alford

Julie’s story JULIE Page joined the Warooka SES about 15 years ago and said it had become like a second family. She joined after volunteering for CFS and ambulance because it offered a broad range of ways to give back to the community.

SOUTH Australian State Emergency Service is looking for volunteers on Yorke Peninsula. SES members will be at this year’s YP Field Days to answer any questions people have and encourage them to join their local SES unit. There are units in Warooka, Maitland, Port Broughton and Snowtown on YP. Yorke district ofﬁcer Phil Smith said most units on the peninsula had eight to 14 members. “Although 14 members sounds good, if we get a call out during the day most of those members might be working,” he said. “We have a lot of different types of people amongst our members, from farmers through to doctors and engineers. “We welcome anyone to join, training is provided and some of it is nationally accredited

The Copper Coast University Centre was established by Copper Coast Council through the federal government’s Regional University Centre Program. AG Schilling & Co offers diverse services SINCE being established in 1964, AG Schilling & Co has continued to innovatively grow its diverse agriculture services. The partnership started with Ashley Schilling assuming the management of his family farm, the homestead of which had been built by his father Oscar. Alongside wife Barbara, Ashley ran the farm predominantly with cereal and livestock rotation until their son Mark assumed a management role in 1992. Mark and wife Merridee have since evolved the business in many directions, including an adoption of no-tillage practices and the use of GPS, resulting in sustainability and productivity improvements. Progressing to a total of about 2330 hectares of farmland worked, AG Schilling & Co also established a seed cleaning and packing facility to monitor its grain quality before being exported. “We began exporting our own grain because we wanted to be price makers rather than price takers,” managing partner Mark said. Collaborating with export grain brokers, AG Schilling & Co began shipping its grain to south Asian countries in 2001. With seed breeding companies using the cleaning plant, the Schillings were able to offer their

expertise to help provide new seed varieties to growers through the early generation, cropping, processing and packaging of newlybred seeds. “Much of our sideline business was developed to reduce costs and supplement income, as rising land values made the purchase of land near out of reach,” Mark said. In 2005, Mark searched the internet for a seeding point that would sow more evenly than what he had been using. “It made me curious as to why a jet opener was in a search for seeding points,” he said. “After a lengthy time deliberating on these openers, which we hadn’t seen in Australia before, I contacted the company and asked how I could get some. “They replied ‘we don’t have a dealer in Australia’, to which I responded, ‘can I be your dealer?’ — Atom Jet’s reply was ‘sure’.” AG Schilling & Co then began importing the Atom Jet Seeding Openers in 2007. By 2018, AG Schilling & Co was importing enough ag technology to launch a separate business, AG Culture Pty Ltd. Now in its fourth year, the business continues to import Atom Jets, AWS Airbars, John Deere disc seeder parts and AGI Westﬁeld conveyor products.

This year, AG Culture Pty Ltd has secured rights to import four more ag technology products, all of which can be viewed at www.agculture.com.au. Yet another diversification chance arose for AG Schilling & Co in 2014 when South Australia suffered a severe mouse plague and the only option for many was to invest in expensive bait in high demand. “The industry felt there wasn’t enough competition in the market and new players were needed to increase supply, make the bait more affordable and stop the off-target killing of wildlife,” Mark said. Effectively reducing its input cost, AG Schilling & Co applied for and was granted a licence to manufacture and retail Last Supper Zinc Phosphide Broadacre Mouse Bait for Wilhelm Rural in 2014. Through its first seven years, the bait’s production has tripled and profits have been utilised to build a more efficient, safe and accurate bait-mixing plant. The company’s latest development has been the establishment of beer entity, Yorke Premium, through which they have brewed Malbro Mid Kolsch Style Ale from barley grown on their property. In the past three years of brewing, AG Schilling & Co has delivered four brews from paddock to pint.

AG Schilling & Co stores its harvested barley in silos for about six months, before sending it to Coopers Brewery, Adelaide. The beer is then brewed and canned at Pikes Beer Company, Clare, before being distributed to various establishments, predominantly on Yorke Peninsula. Mark said the Yorke Premium Malbro Mid Kolsch could be enjoyed as a segue from usual brands. “For us the name was to say it all, with the objective to showcase the premium quality products grown and produced on the Yorke Peninsula,” Mark said. The brew can be purchased from local businesses including Cafe Capella’s, Moonta, Wallaroo Sailing Club, Paskeville Football Club, The Bellagio Family Restaurant, Kadina, and other establishments, as well as from AG Schilling & Co direct. YORKE Peninsula’s agricultural bureaus are in need of young and innovative farming minds. With ample experience shared among the membership of each, now is an ideal time to join Arthurton, Boors Plains, Bute, Moonta, Paskeville, Petersville, Weavers Ag Bureaus, or Cunliffe Women in Ag and Business. The bureaus are afﬁliated with the Yorke Peninsula Field Days, meaning members have the chance to be directly involved in the biennial event. YP Field Days president and Petersville Ag Bureau member of 34 years Martin Kenny said bureaus still had a role to play in local farming. “We don’t only learn from guest speakers, but members often bring new ideas to the table and there’s always new information to be shared amongst farmers,” he said. “We enjoy seeing farmers improve and expand their knowledge. “Some are ahead of the pack in some aspects, so it’s good for them to share ideas.” Since being established in the early 1900s, Petersville’s bureau still meets about eight times per year for crop walks, guest speaker presentations and other social events. Like with many local groups, most of Arthurton Ag Bureau has an ageing membership, although a couple of younger farmers have joined, including secretary Tim Correll. “Apart from (reasonably) new member

Chris Moloney and myself, most of our members are semi-retired — we’re tracking steadily but not taking off,” he said. “The bureau is a great learning platform and it helps members see different things outside their own farms.” Membership at the Boors Plains bureau has been scarce for the past year-plus, with COVID-19 restrictions keeping those involved from socialising. “Our (minimal) members are mostly older and it has just been a disaster with COVID-19,” secretary of 20 years Geoff Lamshed said. “There’s always something to gain from the bureau as members are all usually in a similar location — there’s been a massive difference in yields across the peninsula in the past two to three years.” Bute Ag Bureau chairperson Bruce Philbey said meetings were great platforms for members to compare farming practices. “Members get plenty of information out of the informal discussion,” he said. “They can learn about new practices, such as chemical treatment, grass control and fungicide use.” Cunliffe WAB member Helen Colliver said the group expected a busy ﬁeld days. “When they (the YPFD committee) have working bees, we cater morning and afternoon teas and dinner,” she said. “The men work for free so it’s only right they get their lunch for free. “We also cater for security and police on night shift during the ﬁeld days.”

Weavers Ag Bureau members learning together — and supporting each other FROM three paid-up members seven years ago, Weavers Ag Bureau now boasts 60-plus thanks to innovative ideas designed to attract younger farmers. Two motived past presidents, Martin Collins and Peter Farrow, are credited with laying the groundwork for the bureau’s resurgence by current president Michael Thompson and secretary Nathan Phasey. “We are an independent group, we don’t have monthly meetings, instead arranging events while still retaining the core structure of pre and postharvest functions and district tours,” they said. They list their focus priorities as mental health, business and ﬁnance, machinery, agronomy and the practice side of farming. “We are trying to tick off these major headers throughout the year, realising some are more interested in machinery, others sheep, cropping or business and ﬁnance,” Michael and Nathan said. “But it is all about getting together with likeminded people and learning things to better ourselves. “The social side is just as important as what we learn, and we always structure networking time at the end of any events, that’s where the mental

health side comes in.” In the past 12 months the group has been helped by Kate Martin and Katie Hughes through the SYP Community Hub as well as Linda McCabe, Red Cross. “They’ve come to us with ideas which included a grant following the Yorketown ﬁre that enabled us to purchase equipment, then Katie helped organised the mental health event ‘Are you bogged mate?’ that saw us host 135 people at Watsacowie Brewery, while Linda recently organised a ‘First Aid for Farmers’ day at Warooka that was booked out,” they said. “Events like this are the reason we are doing so well, and having their assistance helps us keep motivated. “All our events are open to anyone, not just bureau members.” One of the initiatives the pair is most proud of is the WhatsApp page designed to be used in ﬁre emergencies. “One message will go out to 200 people, it’s updated in real time providing on-ground information to the CFS and farm units,” they said. “A lot of women have joined so they know what’s happening while they are waiting at home. “It’s a very powerful tool and one we’ll be pushing at our pre-harvest meeting.”
