YORKE PENINSULA FIELD DAYS COMMITTEE 2015... The Yorke Peninsula Field Days 2015 Committee, in their new uniforms, back: Bruce Philbey, Martin Kenny, Adrian Mason, Keith Copley, Ashley Pridham (site maintenance), Brenton Drewett, Alan Baker; middle: Garry Pamment (site bookings/website), Mark Northcott, Michael Barker, Geoff Lamshed, Malve Haynes, Liz Noom (bookkeeper), Dulcie Barker, Merv Simmonds; front: Nick Correll (junior vice-president), Greg Stevens (senior vicepresident), Paul Correll (president), Elaine Bussenschutt OAM (administrator), Rosalie Pearce (treasurer), Paul Browning (immediate past president).

Presidential role for Paul Correll

Yorke Peninsula Field Days committee president Paul Correll is looking forward to another successful event.

THIS year’s field days is shaping up to be another strong event, according to new president Paul Correll. Mr Correll is a member of the Arthurton Agricultural Bureau and was elected as Yorke Peninsula Field Days president in February. “We have nearly 700 exhibitors, so no more or less than two years ago, but we’ve pretty much filled the site,” he said. “I’ve been speaking to some of the exhibitors and they are very positive about this year’s event. “This season has had timely rains, and the threat of El Niño, but

... PAGE 3 ...

we’ve been happy taking the rain as it comes. “There is a lot of potential for a good season if we get timely rains.” A lot of work takes place to maintain the site and ensure it is ready for the big event come opening day on Tuesday, September 29. This year is made bigger too by the celebrations of the 120th field days. “The field days are such a significant event,” Mr Correll said. “It might not bring as many people as the Kernewek Lowender but there are still people spending money on

accommodation and hospitality. It is the largest event of its type in South Australia.” Mr Correll said he is enjoying his time as president but his term ends before the next event. “I’ve had a lot of support from the executive committee and the members of the bureaux,” he said. “Our working bees have been well patronised and the Cunliffe Women in Agriculture and Business group always look after us with meals. “The support from the administration staff has been fantastic as well.”

Murray Allen Wool and Sheep Pavilion MURRAY Allen Wool and Sheep Pavilion will have a distinct style this year reflecting the Chinese Year of the Sheep. The Chinese are among the biggest consumers of wool and predicted to grow as a consumer of Australian natural products. To accompany the theme, along with celebrating 125 years of the YP Machinery Field Days, Australian champion blade shearer John Dalla will demonstrate his talent daily. Shearing and wool handling courses offered by TAFE will be promoted through these demonstrations along with machine shearing. Junior judging features on the Wednesday helping equip the future stock people of the sheep industry through wool and animal assessment and comparison. There will be a fresh look at the wool processing chain connecting the fleece from the sheep’s back to the final garment. AWI has donated sheep key rings and Sam the Sheep colouring books for people to collect when they visit the pavilion and there will be a children’s area with fun and educational activities.

AUSTRALIA’S oldest field day event, the Yorke Peninsula Field Days, celebrated its 120th year with a luncheon on Sunday, July 5. More than 100 people filled the Wallaroo Community Sports Club including YP Field Days life members and many others who have had long associations with the biennial event. The Yorke Peninsula Country Times is in its 150th year, and has covered the field days right from the start. So it was only fitting YP Country Times managing editor Michael Ellis would be asked to cut the field days’ 120th birthday cake. YP Field Days president Paul Correll spoke about the history of the event, which started as a trial near Bute, before life member Philip Woodward said grace. District Council of the Copper Coast mayor Paul Thomas spoke about his recollections of field days when he was young, and of the event’s continuing importance. “There is probably no other event that draws as much attention and

wealth to our area as the YP Field Days,” Mr Thomas said. Yorke Peninsula Council mayor Ray Agnew, a retired farmer, said he is amazed to see the new equipment available to farmers at each field days. “It makes you wonder what’s going to happen in another 120 years,” Mr Agnew said. Speaking on behalf of the Cunliffe Women in Agriculture and Business branch, Raelene Bussenschutt discussed guest speakers throughout the years. Another life member, Richard Daniel, reminisced about interesting times at the field days. “The field days are still about the same things as they used to be,” Mr Daniel said. “Farmers want to see all the new innovations, and to socialise.” Life member Dean Young proposed a toast before Mr Ellis cut the cake. Field days administrator Elaine Bussenschutt described the proud feeling associated with seeing the field days come to life every two years. “The 2015 YP Field Days promises, again, not to disappoint,” she said.

Arthritis SA named official charity

CHARITY... Arthritis SA CEO Julie Black receives a cheque from Copper Triangle Arthritis Support Group treasurer and life member Janet McInerney, of Port Clinton, as part of the group’s continual fundraising which will be boosted by Arthritis SA being named the official charity of the 2015 Field Days.

ARTHRITIS SA has been named the official charity of the 2015 Field Days. CEO Julie Black, who attended high school in Kadina, said she was delighted to hear the news. “We are just really grateful we were selected as the charity of choice and we invite everyone to come and learn more about it and about what can be done, more importantly,” she said. “Arthritis SA provides education, resources and support for people with arthritis in SA. “Will have resources people can come and have a look at. “We are certainly going to be running courses in the area so will take the details of people interested at the field days.” One in four South Australians suffer from arthritis, including 600 children. “I think we were selected because of the number of people who suffer from arthritis,” she said. “The condition isn’t recognised as much as we

would like it to be. “We get very little government funding so we need to raise money so we can support people through our support groups, courses and workshops, and research. “The Copper Triangle support group is a fantastic group and always gives a good donation.” Arthritis SA will run a raffle at the field days to fund a special project. “Every cent will go to funding a paediatric rheumatology nurse at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital,” Julie said. “Our goal is to raise $10,000 which will pay for 200 hours of work.” Julie is looking forward to returning to the field days, and remembers skipping school to attend the event in 1975. “My memory of that first one was wagging school to go and getting told off by the school principal,” she said. “I’m excited to see how it has grown and developed since.”

Jobs in agriculture AGRICULTURE graduates are in high demand and Australia is not producing enough agriculture and agribusiness graduates to take up the range of professional careers on offer. Agriculture and agribusiness graduates walk into employment, such is the thirst for their skills and knowledge. Marcus Oldham, at Geelong, recently conducted a closer-thanusual analysis of where graduates in agriculture and agribusiness have found employment. While a large number head into

production agriculture, another significant group has gone into banking, finance and accounting and a further portion is doing well in commodity trading. Other graduates are in management, marketing, consulting or using entrepreneurial skills and developing their own businesses. The common thread among these employment destinations is they are all focused on supporting Australia’s agricultural industries, either at the production end or the business end. The number of jobs in agriculture is increasing as the nation recovers from the millennium drought, and food security and food quality concerns across the world increase the demand for Australianproduced food. It is in the interest of our agricultural industry, and our nation, to see more tertiary enrolments and graduates equipped for the abundance of agribusiness and agriculture career choices. More importantly, it is also in the

very strong interest of individual students to select a course and career where they will find meaningful employment and make a satisfying contribution. Studying agriculture can help achieve those objectives. Marcus Oldham offers oncampus degree or diploma courses in agriculture, agribusiness and equine management, and offcampus postgraduate studies in agribusiness. Marcus Oldham has topped the 2014 National University Experience for student satisfaction, significantly outscoring Australia’s 40 universities in both quality of entire educational experience and overall quality of teaching. “This is a particularly satisfying result, for current and future students, and the entire Marcus Oldham community,” principal Dr Simon Livingstone said. “It demonstrates, when it comes to the learning experience and future success of our students, we mean business.”

New Leak Detection Unit available now

REVAMPED... The new water Leak Detection Unit offers the same premium features at a significantly reduced price.

ALPHA Group Consulting’s Leak Detection Unit was first released in 2011, and has recently been revamped with a new model available locally through AgByte. The new model comes at a significantly reduced price but still offers the same premium alert features with daily text message reporting of total daily water use and minimum flow per hour plus online access to view usage graphs. The Leak Detection Unit provides the advantages of a solar panel, high gain aerial and regular upload intervals. This tool has proven invaluable in detecting minor water system leaks as well as providing rapid detection of major leaks. Big plans for the fashion parade ONE of the best-loved events of the Yorke Peninsula Field Days will be back in the Murray Allen Wool and Sheep Pavilion this year. The Southern Cross TV YP Field Days Fashion Parade always draws a crowd and will once again be a highlight. Model, media presenter and event coordinator Nadia Stamp has taken the reins for the fourth time. Nadia said she will once again showcase fresh fashions from local designers. “It is my mission to bring new fashion trends and forecast what we will be seeing for the upcoming spring/summer, Nadia said. “Every year I go out and try to find Australian labels and local South Australian brands and that is really important to me, to support local industry and introduce new labels.

“I am really excited about the labels we will be showcasing this year. “We have children’s wear label Alfie Apparel which is absolutely adorable; Review Australia with their Roman holiday spring/summer theme; Bossini which will cater for the men; South Australian brand Miss Gladys Sym Choon, which has been on the local fashion scene since 1923; Allingtons Outpost which is a great country favourite; and Ella and Elka which specialises in fast fashion and new trends and will really suit the YP market. “Leeann and Evelyn, who run Ella and Elka, originally worked with George Gross and Harry Who but have now branched off and started a new label and will be coming to the field days to run a special styling session on Wednesday.

“Other brands will include Beach Pool with its swimwear and resort wear, plus-sized Australian brand TS 14 and brands from the Adelaide Myer Centre. Nadia said nautical will be the underlying theme of the shows, with stripes, polka dots and vintage prints all making an appearance. “We want to showcase what is new but what is also practical, Nadia said. Models will be supplied by Finesse Models Australia, with two models also coming from Brisbane, one being a plus-sized model. “We will also have a little girl, Elsie Johnson, modelling who is Murray Allen’s granddaughter, Nadia said. The fashion parade will run each day at 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm.

Rod sawing his way to YP AUSTRALIA’S most recognised chainsaw carver and sculpting designer Rod Sheehan will bring his one-hour sculpture demonstrations to this year’s YP Field Days. Mr Sheehan first discovered his talent when he carved an eagle out of a piece of wood he found. The carving took 160 hours, spread over six weeks, and is the world’s largest red gum eagle standing five metres high in the parklands of his former hometown of Rosedale, Victoria. He has gone on to become Rod the Chainsaw Man, the country’s

fastest chainsaw carver and national champion. The biggest carving he has ever done is a six-metre cassowary from a tree which came down during Cyclone Yasi. Mr Sheehan has been sculpting since 1992 and since then has produced more than 1000 sculptures and totems, many of which have sold to fans of his work. Mr Sheehan’s one-hour start-tofinish sculpture demonstrations have captivated crowds across Australia and his twice-daily demonstrations will be a highlight at the Yorke Peninsula Field Days.

Boarding at Sacred Heart College SACRED Heart College has had boarders since 1905. Currently we have 50 girls and 70 boys in our community but in the near future we will extend the capacity of our girls’ boarding house to have equal numbers of girls and boys. Our boarders come from all over Australia, from stations in south western Queensland, western New South Wales, Northern Territory and of course from all regions in South Australia. This year we have boarders in years 8 to 12. Sacred Heart College, since its inception, has been a place of hospitality, generosity and highly-regarded student achievement across a broad range of endeavours. The staff and brothers are dedicated to the college community as if it were their own family. With this attitude, they offer guidance and friendship in a Marist and Catholic environment. The Faith Formation program

involves liturgies, retreats, reflection days and other spiritual gatherings. These opportunities promote openness with a sense of being together in a believing community. The boarding community at Sacred Heart College adds great richness and diversity to the life of the school. The college can provide access to choices and opportunities not always available, or easily accessed, in rural areas or small country schools. The boarding house provides modern, family-style facilities for all of our boarders, and families value the opportunity to send their daughters and sons to the same school. The school responds to the changing needs of society through a broad-based curriculum. All students study the South Australian Certificate of Education and, as Sacred

Merlo has manufactured telehandlers in Italy since 1964 and currently has 22 models available in Australia. “We are excited about this new product line as it will complement our existing broadacre range of machinery and open us up to a new market of clients such as chicken farms, with the Merlo dedicated chicken farm model being released later this month,” Larwoods Ag Services manager Kym Flint said. Australian made and owned, Hydrosmart’s patented computerised water conditioner generates unique frequencies to provide a scientificallyproven, consumable-free solution to a wide range of real water issues. Brush at least twice a day. The best time is after meals. Soft bristles are better for your gums. Toothbrushes should be replaced three to four times per year. Brush thoroughly. Ensure you brush all of your teeth, right to the back, and keep brushing for two minutes. Many people only brush for 30 seconds. Floss daily. Be gentle and use a back-and-forth motion. Utilise fluoride. Drink tap water which already contains fluoride, and choose fluoride toothpastes and mouthwashes. Start children early. Get your young ones into good brushing habits. Teach them the importance of brushing and the correct technique. Kids can try brushing their own teeth from about age 2. Limit sugary foods. These create acids in the mouth which can damage teeth. Limit acidic drinks. These drinks, such as soft drinks and fruit juices, can soften teeth and lead to cavities. Keep your teeth. Protect them during physical activities which put them at risk, such as contact sports. Don’t chip them. Teeth are for chewing food. Using them to remove bottle tops, rip open packaging or even tear sticky tape can cause chips. Go to the dentist. Regular check-ups can identify minor problems before they become major. See your dentist as soon as possible if you have a toothache, bleeding gums or any other dental concern or emergency.

A PRODUCT which has taken the United States by storm is now spreading through the Southern Hemisphere. Evapo-Rust is a harmless, biodegradable product which removes rust as easily as the effort it takes to immerse an object in water. Hitec CNC Machine Tools Southern Australia distributor Brian Harding said Evapo-Rust technology employs selective chelation for rust removal. “Evapo-Rust is an amazing neutral pH rust remover which has fully demonstrated its ability to decrease the maintenance burden and decrease the cost and effort put into removing rust,” he said. “Evapo-Rust removes even deep rust on all types

Amazing bandsaws Whilst visiting the Grant Pavillion and seeing EvapoRust in action, you can also check out Hitec CNC Machine Tools Southern Australia’s range of Femi bandsaws. These bandsaws are compact and portable and make accurate, clean cuts with no sparks and no need for lubrication. Cutting at angles and mitering is simple and the saw even allows the operator to walk away and finish other jobs as it finishes its cut by itself, and even turns off when it’s done. BOARDING holds a central place in the life of St Peter’s College. St Peter’s delivers a safe and homely boarding experience for each of its boys to ensure they graduate as confident individuals with the skills they need to contribute to a global society. Paul Brown, Head of Boarding, said the on-campus boarding house creates a strong sense of community and camaraderie which is of great benefit to the boys and the school at large. “When your son joins this vibrant and thriving community of boys from all walks of life, he will be cared for and supported by the fabulous boarding house staff including mentors, tutors, support staff and medical staff,” he said. “Combined with our worldleading Wellbeing Strategy and Positive Education programs, every boy at St Peter’s College learns lifelong personal competencies to develop resilience, an understanding of strengths and those of the teams he will collaborate with and lead.

“As part of this program, our traditional house and classbased pastoral care system provides a safe, inclusive and supportive place for your son within our boarding house, with mentoring to help him find his niche at school.” Additional pastoral expertise and support is provided by the two school counsellors and the school chaplain who work across all year levels and are always ready to help boys or families in need. “At Saints, we also understand and are committed to maintaining ongoing, open communication with parents, ensuring they remain engaged with their child’s development, as a successful, memorable boarding experience hinges on the balanced involvement of staff, students and their family.” For more information about boarding at St Peter’s College, Adelaide, visit its staff during the Yorke Peninsula Field Days in the Hoecker 2 Pavilion, site 13 or visit www.stpeters.sa.edu.au.

Positive outlook for our farmers

CASH COWS... Tim Cleland and Pete Hodges check some Junella Farming cattle, which are worth much more than they have been in recent years.

WITH high cattle and sheep prices, and August rains bringing muchneeded moisture to Yorke Peninsula crops, local farmers are optimistic. Agronomist Chris Davey said before the rains it had been one of the driest winters on record, with Kadina the worst affected area, receiving rainfall which scored in the lowest 10 per cent of years. “Most of YP has been in decile three this season, with isolated pockets of almost drought-stricken crops,” Chris said. “Excellent rains on northern and central YP in August have alleviated a lot of the earlier stress, with southern YP catching up in mid to late August. “The outlook has changed a lot with the good rains. “The mood has swung from pessimism to optimism now the chance of average yields is there, and grain prices like those of lentils are at almost all-time highs.” Chris said the dry winter meant disease was not an issue but the recent rainfall and sunshine has

caused some stripe rust in mace wheat, grey mould in lentils and ascochyta in chickpeas. “Rhizoctonia root disease has also been more prevalent in 2015 — the lack of summer rain has meant the disease has not been broken down or reduced in inoculum level in the soil,” Chris said. “September will mean the insects are around with crop monitoring in full swing then for insects and further disease. “Lucerne flea had posed major problems in establishing crops, with large areas of land being sprayed for them in May and June.” While many local farmers have moved away from running stock, those who have stuck with them are reaping the rewards. Farmers have taken advantage of record cattle prices with a significant increase in profit in the last 12 months. Sheep prices are also high and recent local stud sales were very successful.

Sheepdog trials are back again

TRADITION... Sheepdog trials were a part of the YP Field Days from the start, it is believed.

THE 2013 Yorke Peninsula Field Days marked 30 years of sheepdog trials held at the event. Sheepdogs were part of the field trials in the early years dating back to 1929 but are also believed to have been in very first program. At the 2015 event, competitors are expected to come from across South Australia, and even interstate, to feature top dogs. “Arena three sheep trials will run over the three days and farm dog trials using 10-15 sheep will be held on Wednesday, spokesperson Merv Simmonds said. “Trials provide a valid means of assessing the working ability of sheepdogs and maintaining and developing the quality of working dogs. “In addition it provides sporting release for those actively involved in

everyday farm work and the opportunity to travel and enjoy the company of like-minded people with trials held regularly in all states. The main breeds on show will border collies and kelpies “Improved seating for the area will ensure the trials are a good place to sit, relax and watch the talented dogs at work, Mr Simmonds said. “Commentary, as much as possible, will be provided to inform visitors what is happening and ensure their involvement. Competitors, when not working, are always available to discuss matters related to working dogs and the trials. “Major sponsorship is provided by Laucke Feed Mills along with good local support. “Lauckes will have a lucky draw for a quality border collie pup through their static site.

THE always popular Yellow Brick Road will take a new path this year. For the first time, the road has been organised by Horizon Christian School, Balaklava. School executive assistant Kelly Bickle said the school applied in mid-2014 for the position and found out they had been accepted for the next two field days late last year. “We thought it was a good opportunity to get out there in the community,” she said. “It’s also a nice fundraiser for us as well.” Since that time, Kelly has been busy organising the companies to participate. “There are 12 stops on the road,” she said. “Participants will stop at stalls including Kadina Travel, Kadina Retravision, Play Pouch, Cunningham Engineering from Balaklava, PIRSA, Y3P group, SES, Moonta Dental and the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion.

“It’s been a busy time at the school with a few other things going on, so we were hesitant to bombard the parents with too much so soon. “But we’ve had a great response from parents and had quite a few people call up and register an interest in helping out. “Our school band and choir will be over there as well on Wednesday, so we might commandeer some of them.” Being Horizon’s first time, Kelly said the school has been well supported by Kadina Memorial School which managed the road for the past two events.

WALKING THE ROAD... Horizon Christian School, Balaklava, students Waverley Palmer, Lachlan Bickle, Lyla Georg and Carmen Palmer get ready for the Yellow Brick Road.

farmers to be sun smart SPRING is just around the corner and Cancer Council SA is encouraging farmers to protect themselves from sun exposure. Ultra Violet levels are now hitting levels strong enough to damage unprotected skin, contributing to the risk of skin cancer regardless of the temperature. Cancer Council SA chief executive Lincoln Size said it’s important for people involved in outdoor work, such as farmers, to get into the habit of protecting their skin from the sun as their exposure to UV radiation is much higher. “While sunburn or a suntan may fade, the damage lasts a lifetime,” Mr Size said. “Risking long-term damage to your skin and increasing the risk of skin cancer by not protecting it when UV is three and above, is simply not worth it. “Many country people are involved in occupations outdoors, such as farming, and we encourage them to get into the habit of checking the SunSmart

UV Alert every day. “This can be accessed through news weather reports, online or even via Cancer Council’s SunSmart phone app.” Mr Size added it’s important skin protection habits start at an early age. “Evidence shows exposure to UV radiation during adolescence and childhood largely determines a person’s lifetime skin cancer risk, a lesson many older Australians are now learning,” Mr Size said. Skin cancer caught early generally results in better treatment outcomes so people should check their skin regularly. If they notice any changes to existing freckles or moles or new spots they should see their doctor immediately. Cancer Council research indicates two in three South Australian men aged 45 or under don’t regularly check their skin. This research comes on top of melanoma statistics indicating

men account for more than 70 per cent of melanoma deaths in South Australia. “There is a higher incidence of melanoma in men and a higher number of deaths and this data confirms local men are also less likely to check their skin regularly,” Mr Size said. “Many occupations and popular recreational activities males are involved in, such as farming and trades, are based outdoors which increases exposure to damaging UV radiation and skin cancer risk. “The message is simple — be vigilant about checking your skin because skin cancer caught early generally results in better treatment outcomes. “Always protect yourself when in the sun and ask your partner or a mate to check your back and anywhere else you can’t see yourself for skin changes.” For more information about sun smart principles visit cancersa.org.au or email sunsmart@cancersa.org.au.

HUGE REDUCTIONS

FIE D A LD SAL Y S E!

A two-day field trial was held at Clem Schilling’s Boors Plain property. Members of the Cunliffe Women’s Agriculture Bureau presented a section of interest for the women and marquees started to appear on site. Newly-appointed Minister for Agriculture Brian Chatterton said the YP Field Days played a vital role in allowing the farmer to assess equipment under working conditions. More than $5million of equipment was exhibited and demonstrated at the field days, including tractors valued at $50,000. The field days were held at the new permanent site in Paskeville for the first time. Highlights included an official opening by Sir Thomas Playford and the demonstration of big four-wheel tractors. There were more than 130 tractors on display. Accommodation in the area was completely booked out. Visitors from many areas of South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria made up the more than 20,000 attendees. YP Field Days life member Cliff Rodda unveiled a plaque to commemorate the growing of the first wheat on Yorke Peninsula, about one kilometre from the site, in 1865. The field days were held from August 11 to 13. On the Saturday before the event, at least 90 marquees were blown down and extra roadways were put down to combat the mud. The weather didn’t dampen crowds, with attendance up by 10,000. Officials were pleased to announce the event had exceeded their expectations and was described by Mr R. O. Kiefer, regional manager sales and marketing Ford Tractor Products, Asia/Pacific and Latin American Region as impressive and “as fine as anything I have seen anywhere in the world”. A new trend at this year’s event was solar power with Elders running solar powered toys and Telecom Australia, a solarpowered telephone. About 27,000 people passed through the gates, plus season tickets, giving organisers good numbers despite heavy rain and gale-force winds. Canada was the inaugural guest nation and Canadian High Commissioner Ed Schreyer officially opened the event. Italian Trade Commissioner to Australia Gabriele Rosetto officially opened the event. In the two years leading up, the committee had spent $50,000 on site improvements including road surfacing, tree planting and additional buildings. 1987 was the first time the event had been held at the permanent site in September. A wide variety of goods were found in the Russian Pavilion in spite of travel restrictions, including tractors, large and small farm machinery, bicycles, and whitegoods. District Council of Northern Yorke Peninsula won the general interest display award. Despite the rural recession, a record 520 entries were received for stallholders this year and an estimated 53,000 people — also a record — walked through the gates. With similar events noting a 20 per cent drop, organisers were thrilled. Aerobatic pilot Chris Sperou enthralled the crowds in his Pitts Special.

Yorke Peninsula Field Days Head of ABC Rural Radio Ian Doyle and chairman of the Australian Barley Board Des Chenery were day two’s guest speakers. Twenty aircraft were lined up by 11am on the first day. An estimated $70million of machinery was on display. A record 72,000 people attended, and the committee said it would consider expanding the event to four days, to potentially a Saturday, and holding it annually. Frank Bawden, of Tumby Bay, unveiled a plaque commemorating his great-grandfather Robert who established the field trials on Yorke Peninsula. Australian Rural Woman of the Year Barbara Scott was a guest speaker. Premier John Olsen officially opened the event which hosted 52,000 people during the three days. Leith Larwood celebrated 40 years of involvement with the event. Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Sir Eric Neal, AC CVO, opened the event. Spending was up, signalling a renewed confidence in the industry. Mundoora’s Ross Arbon won the farm innovation competition award for his big square bale accumulator. A record-breaking crowd of 18,000 attended the first day of the field days. Kelly Kirkland, from just west of Balaklava, won the best Female Owner in the inaugural Beaut Ute competition with her 1978 Holden HZ. Despite forecasts of rain and possible hail, good crowds attended. Former Olympian Raelene Boyle was an interesting guest speaker. Wireless broadband was operational at the site for the first time. Almost 30 sites were damaged by driving rain and strong winds and minor damage to others on Tuesday night but it was all repaired in readiness for Wednesday. John McGrath, of beyondblue, used his opening address to raise awareness of mental health issues. The event was called a tremendous success by president Don Evans, with about 48,000 walking through the gates. Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, AC, CSC, RANR, paid a low-key visit during his tour of the region. Former Australian Test cricketer Merv Hughes officially opened the event. Crowds braved horrendous weather but rain increased the positivity of farmers. ABC Radio personality Peter Goers officially opened the event, while Out of the Blue’s Michael Keelan and Michael Angelakis cooked up a storm. About 4000 deliveries were made to parcel pick up during the three days, indicating a good event for stallholders. Local businesses and accommodation venues also praised the event, many locations taking bookings for the 2015 Field Days.

Milestone for permanent site WHAT started as field trials in farmers’ paddocks has developed into one of the region’s biggest drawcards since moving to a permanent site almost 40 years ago. In July 1895, a tillage competition was held at the first field trials. The trials were rotated around the region until the committee made some changes in 1974. Once known as the Northern Yorkes Peninsula Field Trial and Show Society, the organisation was renamed the Yorke Peninsula Field Days. The committee was aware growing patronage from All agricultural bureaux general public meant a involved in the field days permanent location would favoured a Paskeville site and need to be found, and a site was established in 1975. Keith Lamming was approached All agricultural bureaux to see if his 35 acres could be involved in the field days purchased for $8000. favoured a Paskeville site and Keith Lamming was approached to see if his 35 acres could be purchased for $8000. The land is the centre of the present site and extends to the sheepdog trial area. Another 32 acres, fronting the Thrington Road, was purchased from Stan Norris for $7040 and was completed in 1977. Thirty-two members of participating bureaux invested money to purchase the land. Members could invest a minimum of $50 to a maximum of $500 for five years at 10 per cent interest.

Lusty EMS releases Drop Deck Chassis Tipper

LUSTY EMS... Your leading tipper brand.

Established in South Australia

LEADING tipper brand Lusty EMS announced the release of its Drop Deck Chassis Tipper model on the first day of Perth Truck Show recently. Optimising height and shape, the new model provides significant benefits in the form of increased capacity, stability and payload. “The drop-deck design increases the volume over a standard chassis tipper by up to six cubic metres per load,” general manager of tippers at manufacturer, MaxiTRANS, Craig Wallace, said. “This means operators can carry more bulk product per trip, saving both time and money.” By dropping the frame, and hence lowering the height of the load, the trailer has a lower centre of gravity, increasing safety and stability on the road. “The innovation is in the chassis main-rails. They are optimally designed to maximise strength and durability,” Craig said. “This, combined with the aluminium construction, ensures the trailer maintains a low tare weight capable of carrying the extra load.” The Drop Deck Chassis Tipper on display in Perth featured increased wall height and internal width, typically specified for operators transporting lower density bulk product, further adding to the increased capacity already provided by the drop-deck design. The trailer is also set up for road train configuration, featuring an optional road train coupling.

Don’t let hearing loss isolate you

AUDIOLOGY... Chris Laird of Chris Laird’s YP Audiology, which can help people with hearing loss get back in the conversation using modern, high performance hearing aids.

SHEDS

THE COMPLETE PACKAGE FROM START TO FINISH

THE most precious moments for most people are the times spent with family and friends, being able to share stories, joy and laughter. Unfortunately, not everyone can enjoy these moments due to a decline in their hearing. One in six Australians suffers some degree of hearing loss, which can decrease the clarity of speech. Common symptoms of hearing impairment include the perception people are mumbling or speech is simply unclear, increased television volume, difficulty with conversation amongst background noise, trouble understanding grandchildren and tinnitus. Coping mechanisms include turning your head to hear better, constantly asking people to repeat things, waiting for the conversation to move on, or pretending to hear what was said. Some people cope by simply avoiding social situations because hearing is too difficult, according to Chris Laird of Chris Laird’s YP Audiology. “Not only can hearing loss deplete our mental energy, it can also negatively

affect our overall quality of life,” Chris said. “We like to communicate and one of the biggest barriers to doing this is hearing loss. “However, there is no need to miss out on conversation and the joys of life because in most cases the solution for hearing loss is simple and effective. “Technology continues to advance and the significant improvement in hearing aids has meant thousands of hearing-impaired people are now reengaged and can communicate with ease and confidence. “Not only is the sound quality of hearing aids remarkable, so is their appearance with very discreet and completely invisible devices available.” Reconnect and stay in the conversation. Chris Laird’s YP Audiology consults in Kadina, Moonta, Maitland, Ardrossan, Port Broughton, Minlaton, Wallaroo and Clare, and is accredited to offer free hearing services and hearing aids to all eligible pensioners and DVA card holders. Leith’s long service LEITH Larwood, of Kadina, spent an incredible 36 years as secretary of the Yorke Peninsula Field Days. Mr Larwood was a delegate of the field trials site in the late 1950s before becoming secretary from 1968 to 2004. “My daughter Jasmine helped me from 1985 to 2004 and it was nice to have the opportunity to work with her,” Mr Larwood said. “In the beginning I was generally responsible for looking after the exhibitors and all the information they needed to know such as cost for sites. “However, by 1985 Jasmine took over a lot and became the booking manager which was a big task.

“When Jasmine started we had about 330 exhibitors but by the time we left there were 700, so it was a big job taking phone calls and organising them.” Mr Larwood said he has always wanted to help people and remembers assisting his father on the farm as a small child. “I always wanted to do something for the community but didn’t know what it would be so that’s how I became involved with the field days,” Mr Larwood said. “I was always extremely interested in agriculture from a young age and I could see there was something I could do for the community and farmers.”

Mr Larwood never expected to be secretary for 36 years. “When we moved to the permanent site in 1977 I got to see the first shed built,” Mr Larwood said. “I saw about 80 per cent of the site development which was a very proud time for me and the whole district. “There were lots of changes but the biggest change in my time was when the event went from one day to three days. “The other change was the development of the permanent site which was an exciting time but we had to be careful how we spent our money because there were new demands.”

RECHARGE... Debbie and Gerard Anselmi, from Recharge, will get more life out of your batteries.

LEAD acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphation build-up on internal lead plates. According to Gerard Anselmi of Recharge Battery Revitaliser and Conditioner, it is easy to treat sulphation and prevent premature battery failure with the simple Recharge Battery Conditioning Program. “We have been saying for years farmers are getting eight to 10 years in our battery conditioning program,” Mr Anselmi said. “However, most shows we do these days we meet people using our Recharge Battery Conditioning Program with 12 and 14-year-old batteries still going, as we did at Ag-Fest and the Brisbane Truck Show recently. “In fact last year we had three farmers with 17-year-old batteries, and one was still going strong. “The last one was a Canterbury farmer at our last show of the year – the

Christchurch A&P show in November — he was very pleased with the results “After 17 years on the market in New Zealand and 11 years in Australia I would not be surprised if we bettered that figure given time.” A Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build up, turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid electrolyte-holding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation build-up process, one chemical reaction to counter another,” Mr Anselmi said. “Once treated, a battery is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition. “Prevention is the key, treat them early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged. “Don’t wait until they die then try to resurrect the dead. “And yes, you can treat

sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell treating and resealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. “Recharge is also great for deep-cycle batteries like on forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting-system batteries.” Recharge is no longer available from CRT but Mr Anselmi and his wife Debbie will be at the YP Field Days again this year their usual site 244. The 500-millilitre farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery or $8.50 to treat an N-70. A more cost-effective twolitre commercial pack is also available and that pack can also be purchased online at www.recharge.net.nz or on eBay. As Recharge is acid based it is dangerous goods and expensive to freight; the twolitre bottle is therefore the only one sold directly — and it is far cheaper at the YP Field Days.

POULTRY MANURE A Natural sustainable fertiliser for your business

Many farmers in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem.

Enviroswim freshwater pool system

ENVIROSWIM... Swim in crystal clear water with Enviroswim.

ENVIROSWIM ES3 system is not just another water sanitation system with a green label. It is a revolution in swimming pool technology which gives you beautiful, natural, crystal clear water. The system was developed in Australia in 2002 to minimise the use of chemicals and reduce impact on the environment. This truly eco-friendly system provides a freshwater swimming pool which has no threats to your health, is great for kids with eczema and causes no red eyes. The water can be used on the garden and leaves no streaks on glass pool fencing — you can even grow plants around your pool. The Enviroswim ES3 is less expensive to run, easier to maintain and more effective than conventional chlorine-based

swimming pool systems. The first questions people ask is: Does it work? Is it safe and is it effective? The answer from Enviroswim customers is a resounding yes. The Enviroswim ES3 has more independent accreditation than any other Australian-made pool sanitising system. It was tested by the NSW government lab to meet its health department protocol for the introduction of a new sanitising system. The Enviroswim system passed, dramatically outperforming chlorine in the elimination of harmful bacteria. Enviroswim is also the only alternative product in Australia to have been awarded NSF accreditation. For more information, call Janine Lusher on 0407 710 925 or visit www.enviroswim.com.

Seymour College creative, critical thinking IF you are great at running, jumping and throwing, you could perhaps be a decathlon athlete, competing in 10 sports events. But how would you fare in a competition of 10 tasks which places an emphasis not on sports but on higher order thinking, problem solving, creativity and teamwork such as in the National da Vinci Decathlon? The da Vinci competition tests students in creative and critical thinking tasks of art and poetry, cartography, codebreaking, creative producers (drama), engineering, English, general knowledge, math, philosophy and science. This year, Seymour College won gold in the year 7 category and silver in year 9. Seymour College encourages girls to develop critical and creative thinking skills throughout their school life. It is central to their approach to inquiry-guided learning, and it is developed in various ways through debating, public speaking, the United Nations Youth Association, Student Representative Councils and mock trials. “Higher order thinking skills are important for our boarders as many of our girls will return to their rural communities more able to confidently share knowledge and address business needs, both commercial and farming, with a solutions-based approach,” director of boarding Caroline Hodges said. Boarder from Wallaroo, Sophie Carles, said an important quality for creative thinkers is perseverance. “The best creative thinkers can think of multiple solutions to a problem, and will continue to think of solutions until the best possible outcome is achieved,” she said. “Problem-solving and logical reasoning are very important skills. They’re applicable in practically every aspect of life, and one of the best ways to enhance these skills is through the practice of independent thinking.” By embedding creative and critical thinking across the college, Seymour is preparing girls for a dynamic future, one where they are ready for leadership.

Sporting clubs are cooking up a storm LOCAL community and sporting groups will be busily cooking away and ordering goodies to feed the masses at this year’s Yorke Peninsula Field Days. Groups are given the opportunity to cater at the event and for most it’s their major fundraiser for the year. The Bute Lions, netball and football clubs combine to prepare, cook and serve food and drinks. Danielle Price has been involved for about 10 years and said it’s a great opportunity for the clubs. “We have two canteens and it involves a few meetings beforehand and a week setting up and getting ready,” Mrs Price said. “Bute got involved when another group gave up a canteen so we were approached and it evolved from there.

“We also have help from other groups because we borrow equipment from the golf, bowls and sporting clubs. “We have pies, pasties, hot chips, steak sandwiches, drinks, tea, coffee and cakes which are all made and donated by locals.” Mrs Price said it benefits everyone because they source everything locally. “It would be our major fundraiser and helps with maintenance of our courts and upkeep of the grounds,” she said. “We use about 50 volunteers a day which is big number for a small community but some do more than one day. “It’s a massive job but most people enjoy volunteering because they get to catch up with different people and it’s only every two years.”

CATERING... Local community and sporting groups, including Julie Schilling and Danielle Price from Bute, will be busily cooking away for the YP Field Days.

The Wilderness philosophy is to make our boarding community a second home for the girls. We offer a reassuring family environment, where girls can flourish in a safe, friendly, supportive place providing each student with the greatest chance of building resilience and achieving learning success. Weeds costing grains industry billions

WEEDS... A new study has detailed the economic impact of weeds on farms.

THERE have been some incredible changes in farming systems and practices impacting the weed spectrum and control options. CSIRO farming systems researcher Dr Rick Llewellyn and a team of researchers and analysts have just completed a comprehensive study showing how weed management has changed in 15 years. “There has been a major shift to no-till, large increases in herbicide resistance and some important new weed problems have emerged,” Dr Llewellyn said. “Our study measured the economic impact weeds have on Australian grain farms. “Despite our relatively conservative assumptions, weeds are costing the grains industry even more than we had expected. “The overall cost of weeds to Australian grain growers is

estimated to be $3.3billion, or more than $140 per hectare in expenditure and losses.” The GRDC-supported research included the cost of yield loss due to in-crop and fallow weeds, weed control costs including herbicide and non-herbicide practices and grain contamination costs. The analysis showed weed control costs, rather than yield losses, account for about threequarters of the total economic impact of weeds on Australian grain growing businesses. The study showed annual ryegrass is costing Australian farmers more than any other weed. It suggested the best time to invest in weed control was in the fallow, and stated Australian farmers are adopting integrated weed management practices such as narrow windrow burning and double-knock.

PENINSULA PRODUCE... Barley Stacks Wines employee Brooklyn Sims with some of the locally-made products which will be on show in the Y3P pavilion.

AFTER its award-winning pavilion at the 2013 field days, the Y3P group will be back again to showcase its wares this year. Y3P was created as an association for the benefit of producers, tourism-related businesses and individuals which help create a unique YP experience, and has grown to 17 members. The three Ps stand for people, products and places and all aspects will be on show in the Larwood Pavilion. This year’s exhibitors are Barley Stacks Wines, Yorke Peninsula Visitor Centre, Alpacas Chaparral, Yorkes Uncorked, MBC Foods, YP Lands Products, Beelicious Honey, YP Business Network, Marion Bay Motel and Copperclub Golf and Community Association. Y3P member and Barley Stacks Wines owner Lyall Schulz said Y3P has been excited to welcome some new businesses to the group.

“We have a bit of a different line-up this year with some new faces on board including the Copperclub, Yorkes Uncorked and YP Business Network,” he said. “The new golf pro at the Copperclub Christopher Longbottom was very keen to get involved and approached us which was great. “A mini feature in the pavilion will be a blow-up driving range so that will be something a little different.” Lyall said there will be tastings and demonstrations by a number of the exhibitors in the pavilion. “We are coming together to showcase our businesses and hope people learn more about what we have to offer,” he said. “Yorke Peninsula is known for its friendly faces and beautiful places and there are a wonderful variety of things to explore. “We encourage people to ask questions and meet the local business owners.”

Broadband network rollout boosts activity ALMOST 4000 properties on Yorke Peninsula will be eligible to connect to the National Broadband Network by the end of 2015. Telstra area general manager for northern South Australia John Tonkin said another 1000 will be added in early 2016 when Port Clinton, Price, Pine Point and Wool Bay come online. Currently the NBN is expanding its fixed wireless network, which is designed for those outside major towns and cities. “It provides fast and reliable 4G download speeds

via a roof-mounted antenna attached to each property,” Mr Tonkin said. “The signal is then transmitted by a cable to the NBN connection box located within each home.” Mr Tonkin said the company has had plenty of interest from YP residents about connecting to the service. “Having access to reliable, fast broadband can help provide farmers the opportunity to work more effectively with suppliers and build their business effectively without leaving home,” he said. “It also allows them the opportunity to video chat and interact a lot easier with customers. “For households, NBN fixed wireless can also provide the bandwidth needed to get more members of the household online at the same

time to stream videos and use a range of connected devices like PCs, games consoles, tablets and smartphones.” There is a growing interest in streaming video services and the speed and reliability of the NBN allows customers to enjoy content with fewer slowdowns. “The streaming video revolution is accelerating demand for fast, reliable connectivity, with more than half of Telstra’s fixed broadband traffic now video related,” Mr Tonkin said. “Broadband use in Australia has reached unprecedented levels and last year the volume of traffic carried over Telstra’s fixed network increased by more than 30 per cent.” For more information about the NBN, visit Telstra at the field days or at 28 Taylor Street, Kadina.

Murdocks motoring into the event WITH three great brands now under the Murdock Motors umbrella, Michael Murdock has decided to go it alone at this year’s field days. The latest models from Ford, Mitsubishi and Kioti will be front and centre at their sites on Bute East and Arthurton East Roads. The Murdock name has been synonymous with Ford since Michael’s grandfather, the late E. E. Murdock, was appointed as the company’s authorised dealer 90 years ago. This makes Murdock Motors part of a very select group of Australian dealers, and that milestone was recently acknowledged by the Ford Company. “I am very proud of our association with Ford, and there are some exciting times ahead with the release of the new Everest model, and the muscle car Mustang,” Michael said. Looking to diversify, 12 months ago he rebadged the Minlaton showroom as Murdock’s Mitsubishi. “This added a new customer base to our business and I’m very proud to be able to say we recently received the Mitsubishi Distinguished Dealer award for 2015, the first time this has been achieved by a dealer in their debut year.” As far as the Kioti tractor range goes, Michael said every farm should have one. “Before I decided to take on the Kioti dealership I thoroughly researched similar machines on the market, and

New models from Ford, Mitsubishi and Kioti will all be on show at the Murdock Motors sites. Drop by, take a look and have a chat with Michael and his staff.

Westminster warmly welcomes YP families

WESTMINSTER... Boarders relaxing in the Luke Boylan Centre.

WESTMINSTER School is known for its excellence in all-round education. More than 140 sporting teams, a huge performing arts program, an extensive agricultural science program based at the on-campus Sturt Grove farm, and 40-plus subjects offered in year 12 provide just some of the exceptional opportunities which together make up what is uniquely Westminster. Students are strongly encouraged to follow their interests in a wide range of academic choices, sports and service activities to achieve their best. Blessed with a substantial 23-hectare campus, featuring a large sports and swimming centre and a 1000-seat theatre, the school is a constant hub of activity. At the secluded end of the school grounds, is the Boarding Precinct. This is the home of the boys’ boarding house, Luke Boylan coeducational recreation centre and the girls’ boarding house. The boys’ boarding house has lived up to the high expectations of the community and confirmed its position amongst the best in Australia. It features a contemporary two-storey

floor plan including numerous breakout, study and recreation spaces. Bedrooms are single or double, depending on year groups. There is a private ensuite shared between two bedrooms. The girls’ boarding house consists of a beautiful garden village of threebedroom units. The Luke Boylan Centre provides a relaxed and comfortable space in the Boarding Precinct for brothers, sisters and friends to spend time together. Wi-Fi access is available throughout the entire precinct. Every boarder is supported by an outstanding wellbeing program and given every opportunity to make the most of an exceptional allround education. Visit www.westminster.school to discover the extensive range of opportunities for boarding students from Yorke Peninsula and other regions of South Australia. To arrange a tour, book through the website or contact enrolments manager Darin Betro on 8276 0276 or dbetro@westminster.sa.edu.au. Darin and other Westminster staff will be at the school’s stand in the Hoecker 1 Pavilion at the Yorke Peninsula Field Days.

Getting the balance right for boarders PRINCE Alfred College’s boarding community caters for 140 boys in years 7 to 12. It provides an environment where boys can flourish academically and socially. This enables boys to be the best they can be, whether it is academically or on the sports field. A key component of all-round success is the academic program in boarding which supports the boys’ academic progress. It provides structure, access to academic support and helps develop positive learning habits. All boys have supervised homework sessions. The juniors, years 7-10, are taken to the school’s library each weeknight to enhance their focus and provide the right academic environment for success. An essential ingredient to this formula is each session is supervised by academic staff who work in the boarding program.

PAC... Boarders are well cared for whilst receiving the best in academic and sporting opportunities.

Senior boys, in years 11-12, study in their rooms with staff supervision. New boys are guided on ways to develop their academic skills to adapt to the increased level of academic rigour at PAC. Specifically, there are programs which focus on organisation skills and planning as well as access to additional specialist tutorial assistance. Given the significance of boarding to the college, all teaching staff are mindful of boarding students in their classes and provide extra support and clear communication with boarding families. Authentic leadership also leads to authentic collaborative learning and the study groups established by the senior boys enable students to learn from each other and also provides important peer support. The proof is in the results attained. The impressive ATARs achieved by the 2014 boarding students are set to be matched by the 2015 boys who will soon be sitting their final exams.
