It all comes down to this. Nine clubs tried to make the grand final, at least five were kidding themselves, and now we are down to two. Kadina hosts the CMS Crows in what I hope will be a cracking match, although the Crows will have to put in their best effort. We haven’t seen it yet in this finals series, not to take anything away from a brave and determined Moonta side. More on that in a minute, but first a rare moment. I must compliment the Yorke Peninsula Football League for revamping the Mail Medal count. Yep, the league got this one right, turning the count from a dull Sunday show into an entertaining night out. The show wasn’t perfect but it was a massive step in the right direction. If it keeps improving players might actually want to attend. Congratulations to Derick Wanganeen for winning the medal. It says a lot about the evenness of the competition’s top players when I didn’t even have joint runner-up Lukas Kangur among my predicted medal contenders. That’s not to mention the fact the top team’s best and fairest winner finished outside the top 10 in the count. Maybe it says more about my knowledge... nah, surely not! Well like usual I’m having a crack at tipping all four grand finals this week. Hopefully I’ve seen enough of the colts and reserves between the pies and chips to formulate a half-decent opinion. Time will tell. JUNIOR COLTS Southern Eagles v Bute/Paskeville The Eagles went straight through to the grand final but it wasn’t the most convincing win. The outcome here largely depends on whether Bute/Paskeville’s top players are all available. The young lads have been carrying the type of injuries caused by growing a foot in one season. If Brock Thomson and Will Pearce both play, Bute/Pasky will be difficult to top. Dylan Branford is another Saints young gun to watch. But Charlie Hoyle, Will Taheny and James Reuther lead a talented Eagles side which could prove too strong regardless. At the final siren... Eagles by a point. SENIOR COLTS Southern Eagles v Kadina The Eagles’ senior colts have been the cream of the crop all year. Now it’s time for them to put the icing on top of the cake. Lachlan Hoile and Connor Drewer bring A grade experience and will be ably supported by Tim Daniell, Jacob Gutsche and co. For Kadina,
Andrew Liebelt will have to play a blinder along with Ryan Allen and Brendan Cock. The home ground advantage will mean the Bloods have the crowd behind them, but the expanses of Kadina oval could suit the hard-running Eagles even better. At the final siren... Eagles by four goals. B GRADE CY Cougars v Moonta This is the ideal scenario for a reserves finale. The Cougars and Moonta were clearly the best teams all year and neither has a pesky A grade side in the grand final to steal all those “bay” graders. Now it’s time for both teams to decide whether those A graders enter at the expense of veterans or youth. History shows veterans win B grade finals, although Kadina disproved that last year. Moonta will rely on a strong midfield led by Ben McPeake and has received a boost from Nick Rendell. But the Cougars’ attack led by Simon Wanganeen and Scott Gunning, supplied by Greg Honner, should prove too much. At the final siren... Cougars by three goals. A GRADE Kadina v CMS Crows I want this to be a great game, I really do. Five things concern me. First, the Crows struggled against a heavily depleted Moonta side. Twice. Second, the Crows were a decent way off Kadina a fortnight ago. Third, Mail Medallist Derick Wanganeen hasn’t been among the Crows’ best players for any of their three finals games. Wanganeen played a game for Hawthorn before a stint in the SANFL, and the Crows need him at his peak. Fourth, the Crows are banged up. Several key players looked sore Saturday after the Moonta game. Fifth, the Crows are relying on kids like Murphy Short, Jesse Chandler and Mitch Gum, and will need to get the best out of their tried and true veterans this Saturday. That is a significant list of worries, but I still expect the Crows to take it right up to Kadina. The big ground will benefit the Crows, and if they can run the ball through Kadina’s defensive zone they will be tough to stop. Kadina will hope for big games from Jono Lee and Joel Palmer in the middle, and for its forwards to chip in and help Daniel Toole. Jake von Bertouch can swing back or forward depending on where he’s needed, as can Ben McNicholl. Zack Edwards and the evergreen Derek Sansbury will supply big bodies for the Crows’ mids to contend with. Many players will still remember the hurting the Crows put on Kadina earlier in the decade, and the Bloods will be out for revenge. At the final siren... Kadina by five goals.
Congratulations to all the teams in making the grand final. Good luck from the management and staff of Larwoods Ag Services

GRAND FINAL
PREVIEW
The final word from the coaches
Daniel Flowers Kadina A grade coach
With a home grand final and local stars rejoining the ranks, season 2017 could have a fairytale finish for Kadina. The side was the first to qualify for the grand final after defeating the CMS Crows in the second semifinal at Yorketown. “I’m feeling pretty relaxed at the moment but it will get more nerve wracking as it gets closer,” coach Daniel Flowers said. “The guys are pretty good with their mindset, now we just need to make sure we get the job done. “It’s nice to be in a home grand final, that’s an added bonus.” Flowers said the club made an effort to look local when recruiting this year. “We wanted to get some of our locals back — the Ellis boys (Fraser, Giles and Nelson), Brendan Papps and Jake von Bertouch played their junior footy and some senior footy here. “We wanted to try build the team around that plus we’ve got some really good kids coming through at the moment — six local boys played first games this year. “We’ve ended up with a good mix of younger guys and experience.” Utilising its strong backline and playing a full-oval press, Kadina has had a strong season. “We have been blessed with a good backline for the past three or four years so we’ve been able
to set up a lot with our backline,” Flowers said. “We have good tall players all the way through Daniel ‘Harry’ Toole, Tyler Baldock and von Bertouch, and we play to those strengths. “Joel Palmer has also been really good for us as well as Giles Ellis running off the wing. “We haven’t been beating teams by heaps but we’ve been winning most of our games and found ourselves in the grand final so it’s been reasonably successful, but there’s another game to be won.” The only team to have defeated Kadina was the team they’ll come up against in the grand final, the CMS Crows. Flowers said his side will be working hard to shut down the Crows’ run and keep an eye on key players. “The Crows are great running team, when they get outside run they use the footy well so we’ve got try and make sure we shut that down,” he said. “They’ve got some good players. “Scott Bentley has had a lot of the footy, as has Kieran Smith, and obviously Craig Fitzgerald in forward lines been kicking a lot of goals — he’s one we really need to keep an eye on.”
Adam Pitt CMS Crows A grade coach
After making it as far as the preliminary final last year, CMS Crows has gone one better and secured a spot in the 2017 grand final. Playing coach Adam Pitt said the Crows have taken plenty away from their semifinal loss to Kadina. “The loss against Kadina hurt but I think we learned a lot out of that,” he said. “I feel like we’re developing weekly and building a lot of confidence in what we’re doing. “We were tested in the preliminary final and obviously came through. “I think our boys are in a really good spot. “(I’m feeling) good, confident.” Pitt said the group has shown plenty of growth since round one. “We’ve learned and developed a lot,” he said. “We’re only a young side so, as the season has gone on, we’ve changed quite a bit from week to week and month to month. “I said to the group at the start that after last year’s effort to get to the preliminary final, we wanted to get into a position where we could play in September this season. “Our aim in terms of recruitment was to try to stay true to the group we had already, we didn’t want to make wholesale changes. “What we did last year was around the mark; we were not quite good enough but not far off either. “We wanted to get growth out of blokes we had.”
The Crows have been the only side to defeat Kadina all year. Pitt said, while he’s feeling confident ahead of Saturday’s game, they’ll be going up against a strong Kadina side. “They’ve got phenomenal footballers on every line,” he said. “They’re a strong, incredible marking team so we just need to break even at every contest.” Pitt said the Crows’ strengths are the side’s youth, speed and willingness to take on a challenge. “Derick Wanganeen without question has had a great season and won the Mail Medal,” he said. “I don’t think we rely on key players though. “There have been great individual efforts throughout but we’re based around a team effort rather than individuals.”

GRAND FINAL
PREVIEW
Close contests expected as excitement builds “Netty Nanna” REPORT BY
After an exciting day at the courts on Saturday I can only imagine the quality of matches we’re in for this weekend! I, for one, cannot believe we’re already in grand final week. Where has the season gone? Congratulations to all those who have secured a spot in the grand final, it’s no small feat so you should all be proud of the work you’ve put in this year. It has clearly paid off! Just one more game between you and victory, so train hard, play fair and may the best side win. A GRADE Paskeville v CMS Crows Paskeville will be going for backto-back premierships in the A grade – they must be doing something right up there! While their team has altered considerably since last year, its quality of play hasn’t. The Magpies put on a supreme performance two weeks ago at Yorketown to defeat the Crows and go straight into the final match. You’d have to say they’re coming in as favourites but I wouldn’t write off the Crows. They have beaten Pasky this season and were without key goalie Tasmyn Biddell in the first final. They also have associa-
tion best and fairest winner Felicity Kemp and runner-up Tegan Young amongst their ranks, plus tall goalies and experience in Hannah Short and Lana Bennett in defence. Pasky is hardly lacking for height in defence with Fiona Bussenschutt and Leanne Pridham. Its goalies Lana Bagshaw and SallyAnn Heinrich can be extremely accurate, and Jade Daniel is masterful in centre so it should be a very tight battle. At the final whistle... Pasky by 1. B GRADE Moonta v CMS Crows Moonta and the Crows have set the benchmark all year in the B grade so it should be another great match up. When these two met a fortnight ago, Moonta scraped through with a thrilling one-goal win. Crows goal keeper Hannah Warwick won the association best and fairest. Combining with athletic goal defender Maddie McNeilly, she will put the pressure on Moonta’s goalies. It will be interesting to see if Crows play tall timber Kaylee Biddell, who could provide a challenge for the Moonta defenders. However, the experience of Michelle Hatcher in keeper with the run of Bella Congdon in goal defence won’t make life easy for whoever lines up in goals for
Crows. Moonta is very settled and the players stick to their game plan, but Crows are nipping at their heels. Moonta centre Mel Appleton has been a rock but will line up against either of the zippy Crows midcourters Tyla Cook or Brooke Ottey. All year Moonta looked to be the premiership favourite but after seeing the semifinal, I have a feeling the Crows might get over the line. At the final whistle... Crows by 2. C GRADE CMS Crows v Ardrossan Corinne Watson has had a stellar season in goals for the Roos, winning the association best and fairest trophy, so she’ll be one the Crows need to watch. Crows will be without goalie Bella Campion due to injury, so it will be interesting to see who she is replaced by. Whoever it is will be working alongside the experience and steady head of Gaye Jolly. However, Ardrossan’s Samantha Ottey and Michelle Wheare combine to make a formidable defence and played well in the preliminary final, so it should be a great battle in the goal circle. Crows’ Jacqui Windsor has also had a strong season in defence, finishing third in the vote count, so Ardrossan will need to work hard to get around her. The Roos have
young gun Molly Coleman as well as Elle Hollitt, who will be both handy additions and give them plenty of versatility. Crows won easily the first time these two met but only two goals separated the sides in the second round. Crows are going in favourites but it should be a tight game. At the final whistle... Crows by 3. D GRADE CMS Crows v Kadina The Crows are coming into the grand final undefeated so Kadina will have a tough match on their hands. However, as we know, anything can happen in a grand final! The closest Kadina has managed to get in their previous match ups was 13 goals, so if they’re going to turn that around they’ll need to stop Crows’ run. Crows goalie Brooke Wenzel was the runner-up best and fairest in the association, so the Kadina defenders will need to work hard to cover her. Kristina Toole shot accurately for Kadina on the weekend and Denatah Treloar was strong under the post, so those two will need to be on their game again. They’ll be up against a dynamic defence duo of Bronwyn Polkinghorne and Lee Blyth, who have worked well together all season. I think Kadina will put up a good fight but the
Crows should get across the line. At the final whistle... Crows by 9. E GRADE CMS Crows v Southern Eagles When these two met in the semifinal at Yorketown, Crows came out seven-goal winners. Under the pressure of a grand final, this game could be a lot closer than that. The association best and fairest winner and talented young defender Lara Reuther will be lining up for Eagles, while runner-up Isabella Varricchio can play either end for the Crows. She lined up in defence with Sophie Longbottom in the semifinal and they worked well together. They will have a great battle with Gemma Rudduck, who leads the Eagles attack line and is ably supported by tall goal shooter Charli McIntosh-Whitehouse. The Eagles goalies can be very accurate and have great rebounding abilities. At the final whistle... Crows by 4. F GRADE CY Cougars v Moonta This should be a great battle. While the Cougars have won each of their three games, the last two were only won by one and six. They’ve been the top two teams all season and have some great players on each side. Cougars defender Hazel Bittner reads the play very well and won the association best
and fairest trophy. Havannah Smith controls the play well in centre for Cougars, while Emma Rowe is versatile and will be handy wherever she lines up. For Moonta, goalie Brooke Irlam will be a strong target while centre Amber Aldridge will have a good tussle against Smith. I wouldn’t be surprised if Moonta manage to finally get ahead here but I’m going to tip the Cougars. At the final whistle... Cougars by 2. G GRADE Kadina v Paskeville Pasky defeated minor round premiers Cougars to land themselves in the grand final. It was a great team performance, with the Magpies managing to hold off a Cougars comeback. Kadina also had a nail biter with the Cougars the week before, holding off a comeback to narrowly win. Both sides have now had some experience with pressure, so it should be a great game. Airlie Ramsey will be a key player for Pasky after a stellar season. Both teams have strong defensive lineups and so the team which can maintain composure and continue to score under the pressure will come out on top here. However, Kadina has had the upper hand during the season and I think it will continue that form. At the final whistle... Kadina by 7.

With only a few familiar faces in our As to start the year we have had a great season getting to know each other and coming together as a team. To now find ourselves about to have a crack at the big one is awesome! Our season has been highlighted by injuries, interruptions and varying line ups but, to the girls’ credit, they have taken it all in their stride, smiling and learning together. To play against the CMS Crow girls is exciting, they have been the benchmark all year and we know any team with their depth and talent is going to be a huge challenge. Our team truly enjoys playing together and we feel like we get better each time we take the court, we look forward to the challenge on Saturday! Also sending masses of good luck to our mighty G grade netballers and Bute/Pasky Junior colts. Play well and enjoy the moment! Looking forward to seeing and hearing the Magpie army in their black and white on Saturday. Go the Maggies!
Wow, what year it has been! It’s such an honour to be playing in the grand final, it’s what we all strive for and through hard work and determination we’re now there. It has been an amazing learning experience to coach such an amazing group of girls. We have a blend of experience and youth who all gel really well together on and off the court, which has been the catalyst of our successful season. This year we have been thrown some curve balls but I believe we have come out on top and stronger than ever. Our goalies will have a tough match up against the two experienced Pasky defenders and I think it will be a good, strongly-fought battle. The versatility of our team throughout the year has been great and has enabled us to develop a number of different combinations after having to regularly deal with a varying line-up. We are all extremely excited and ready for a great game on Saturday. We are also thrilled that after working hard all season we have five netball teams into the grand final, as well as our A grade footy, so good luck to all our teams and take the opportunity with two hands!
