FOOTBALL & NETBALL PREVIEW
Yorke Peninsula Football League has already had a big year with the introduction of YPFL Women, the first female competition in the area’s history. Under-14 and under-17 teams were fielded by the four inaugural women’s clubs, Bute, Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo. YPFLW president Loren Franz said he was extremely pleased with the success of the first season and was already looking to building the competition for 2019. “To have football accessible for girls locally is fantastic. “It is football stripped back to its purest form and girls having a go at a new sport, minus the politics sometimes associated with kids’ sport,” he said. Many adults have shown interest in the YPFLW, meaning the league can look into introducing an open women’s competition. “A common theme for women in the community is football wasn’t accessible to them as young girls,” Loren said. “It’s something to look at closely next year, if the interest and numbers are there.” Loren also encouraged other clubs on the peninsula to express interest in forming
women’s teams. “Hopefully next year we see some other clubs committing to a female footy team,” he said. “At present we’ve got a number of girls from southern YP playing up here, we encourage any club or player to come and be a part of it.” YPFLW has had great local support, particularly from players’ parents.
“It’s been a good experience, I’ve never played competitive football before, and obviously Nina didn’t even know what football was being from Japan,” Caitlyn said. “The coaches were very encouraging and when we played our first game there were so many people around watching. “I definitely want to play

again, I’ve made so many friends playing football.” Nina may even introduce Aussie Rules to Japan after her experience. “I will hopefully play again someday, I want to play it back in Japan,” she said. “Caitlyn’s dad was friends with the coach and asked if we wanted to sign up, we thought it would be a cool experience.”
Kayleigh May, of Kadina, was part of the first female footy premiership team on Yorke Peninsula.

Ardrossan to push for the top five
Football and Netball Clubs

with coach Brendan McKeough
Ardrossan Netball Club has lost a couple of key A graders, but has responded by putting in a big preseason. The club hopes its A grade can mix it with the best teams in the competition and is pushing for a spot in the finals. New faces including Ebony Hall and Shekia Bockmann, who performed well in the B grade last year, and the returning Hannah Goldsworthy, have all shown promise. Talls Georgia and Madeline Kuhndt, in defence and attack, continued to show development last year and are
How has your preseason been? We have enjoyed a strong preseason with good numbers. We have worked a fair bit on our aerobic capacity along with our ball movement. At the start of March, we ventured down to Corny Point for three days to test the boys physically and mentally and it was a great opportunity for the guys to meet our new recruits to the club. What do you hope to achieve this season? Our ambition is to be more competitive than last year. We are planning to avoid the blowout losses we encountered a couple of times (in 2017). We believe we have built a competitive list with the ability to mix it with the top five clubs.
starting to enter their primes. Supporters can also expect another solid season from Hannah Clift, who will take charge of the midcourt in the absence of Tessa Oster and Meg Rowntree. Ardrossan has had a big preseason, and for the A grade that will extend to round two since the club plays Wallaroo in the first round. That solid fitness base will allow the Roos to run with any side in the competition, so any success will come down to their skill level.
Courtside with A grade coach Taylor Winstanley
Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? Scott Burnett was injured a fair bit last year and has had a big preseason and is looking sharp. Henry Crowell will be an important player for us around the half-forward line.
How has your preseason been? Our preseason has been exceptional. We started a lot earlier this year, with preseason beginning in mid-January to give us a good start to the season. With training twice a week, getting plenty of fitness in and court play, it has set us up with a positive vibe for this year. We had good numbers at all sessions, including some juniors who came out to get a bit of a preseason in as well. We still have a lot of work to do but we are very happy with where we are at.
Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: Kadina; CMS Crows; Moonta (in any order).
Half-back Flanker says... A club I have a soft spot for, but there’s no room for softness. These boys need to play hard and climb the ladder. I think they can, although I don’t see them featuring in the finals. The Roos have a strong midfield unit and resilient backline (Lord knows it’s been tested), but where will the goals come from?
Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? I’d like to address the girls who came out and put the hard work in during the preseason. Preseason is hard enough, but coming to the senior trainings and never giving up is really good to see. We had Jemma Torsney, Georgia Lodge, Olivia Ephgrave, Kimberley McKibbin and Tammie Littlewood turn up to many of our sessions. Along with joining in on the fitness and ball work, they spent some time on court playing with and against our senior players which is fantastic for their development and gives them a look at what it’s like to play senior netball.

Ardrossan stalwart Matt Schulz will have some new help this year, including a couple of recruits from Norwood.
Waving goodbye: Brodie Haylock Nathan Ahmat-Watkins Myles Krakouer
How has your line-up changed? We lost two of our A grade players from last year in Tessa Oster and Meg Rowntree, who both brought a lot of heart and run to our team through the midcourt, but that has allowed us to bring in a few new faces. Joining our A grade this year are Ebony Hall and Shekia Bockmann, who both played B grade last year but have proven their abilities in the preseason and have also been willing to move slightly out of their comfort zones to snatch a spot in the A grade. Also joining our A grade this year is Hannah Goldsworthy, who has spent some time out due to injuries but is back and in fine form. Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: Paskeville; CMS Crows; Ardrossan.

What do you hope to achieve this season? The team to beat this year is the 2017 premier, Paskeville. We are well aware the tasks ahead of us won’t come easy, but the goal of this year is to really show a big improvement in our game and to show the top sides from last year we have worked hard for one reason, and one reason only, to play finals netball.

Bute Netball Club has added a handful of talented players to its A and B grade squad for season 2018. Brigetta Cock will lead the A grade, as lower grade coaching positions are filled by Vicki Jones, Breanna Marks, Jane McCauley, Meagan Daniel and Karen Green. The club will welcome new faces including defender Mikayla Galbraith, who has dominated the Kadina and District Netball Association competition for the past couple of seasons. Alex Wilson will provide another tall option, while the Roosters will also be boosted by the return of Halie Snodgrass. They will help cover the loss of Lori Mildren who was developing well in the goal circle. Bute narrowly avoided the wooden spoon last year but will be keen to get a couple of wins on the board early in 2018, and should have the personnel to strive for that result.
Ashleigh Allan and her Bute teammates will continue developing with help from some new faces thrown in the A/B grade squad mix in 2018.
Riding the boundary with coach Lyndon Elsworthy
How has your preseason been? Preseason has been going well, there have been good numbers at training. We had a preseason camp at Barmera and played two trial games against Elizabeth and South Clare. What do you hope to achieve this season? To improve on last year’s performance and to give game time to our up-and-coming young players. Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? I think all of our under-25s will be the big improvers, and that will form the strength of our club moving forward. Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: Crows; Wallaroo; Kadina.
Half-back Flanker says... Bute’s usual revolving door of outside players has swung around again, but that doesn’t matter. The young lads at this club are far more important. There are plenty of them and they have a bunch of talent. Those colts premiership players from the past few seasons are all hitting the age where we should see them impacting games. This year will be about development but what’s developing is bloody exciting if you ask me.

How has your preseason been? Preseason has been great. We had some sessions at North Beach, Wallaroo, followed by a netball competition at Barmera. Preseason has involved lots of hard work with many laughs, and it is fantastic to see new faces at the club. Who is the team to beat in 2018? I haven’t focused much on other teams at this stage. Paskeville is always a tough side, led by Fiona Bussenschutt and a load of talent and experience. I expect the Magpies again will be the team to beat. Player losses and gains? We have unfortunately lost Lori Mildren from our club this season, leaving a gap in the A grade goal circle. New to the A/B squad are Danielle Richardson, Tenayah Renshaw, Mikayla Galbraith and
Alex Wilson. We also welcome back Halie Snodgrass after having a season off. We are excited about the original and new talent, and look forward to seeing the best combination to become our A grade team this year. Who are your up-and-coming players to watch? Our junior teams are full of potential which is exciting for the future of our club. Olivia Elsworthy is a gun. Her determination and natural sporting ability is incredible. Zara Herbert has shown great dedication at preseason and trials. We are definitely looking at providing advanced opportunities for these girls during the season as opportunities arise. Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: Paskeville; CMS Crows; Bute.

H grade — Brooke Polkinghorne Emma Young is coaching NetSetGO — Georgie Southwood B grade, whilst Eleanor and Brooke Davies Langford and Bella Koenecke will run the Cs, and Sandy Smith is taking the D grade. Junior coaches include Bec Bray, Kerrie Rowe, Loren Mills, Michelle Geater-Johnson, Brooke Polkinghorne, Georgie Southwood and Brooke Davies. The Cougars had 54 girls arrive for registrations, so have entered three teams in the Southern Yorke Peninsula Netball Association competition. Those filling out the Yorke Peninsula Netball Association sides have earned their spots. That should make the Cougars a force in all grades.

with A grade coach Sarah Luke A grade team to beat in 2018 and why? It is definitely going to be a strong competition across the board but, after last year’s loss to the Southern Eagles in the quarterfinals, they will be the team for us to beat this season. They are a young, fit side gunning for the premiership so we are going to have our work cut out for us, but we are ready for the challenge.
with coach Alek Kangur
How has your preseason been? We have been getting good numbers out since early December. We’ve been looking forward to a few trainings as a whole group and trial games before the season starts. What do you hope to achieve this season? We want to improve on the last couple of years’ results, and show consistency across the whole season. Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? Henry Hollams and Reuben Parker are part of a good young crop at the club. Expect to see some familiar faces go to another level – Jackson Bruce and Adam Ryan have been looking very good on the track.
Predict the top three sides at the end of the minor round: Kadina; CMS Crows; Paskeville or Southern Eagles.
Half-back Flanker says... With a turnover of players and some added depth, plus the welcome return of Tom Bedding, the Cougars should push for the top three. Recruit Ciaran Hollingworth-Hughes arrives from Port Adelaide with big expectations and a big name. The Cougars will be around the mark.
Above: Matt Carey will again be a key player for the Cougars, as will Alek Kangur, who is also coaching this year.

Players losses and gains? We have been lucky this season welcoming many new faces to the club as well as seeing old players return. We are excited to see what the new girls can bring to the club, and to watch our junior girls rise through the ranks. Unfortunately, we have lost a few girls due to injury and moves to Adelaide but we look forward to seeing the new girls fill their shoes. Up-and-coming junior players to watch? This season we are lucky with the number of junior players at our club. A number have trailed for the regionals and we were able to fill Southern YP teams. We have had some juniors come up into the senior sides so we look forward to seeing them improve their skills and ability in the game. Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: CMS Crows; Paskeville; CY Cougars.

Ardrossan v Wallaroo
CMS Crows the team to beat “Half-back Flanker” REPORT BY
Footy is back and I’ve had a big preseason. Must have packed on 10 kilos and shortened my lifespan by at least five years. I like the summer, but it’s dangerous. The winter is dreary, but better for my health. No Christmas or New Year’s or any other occasion when it’s rude not to eat and drink until you wonder when the doorways in your house shrank. And there’s footy. I love footy, and I have plenty of opinions about it. You know the drill by now. If I insult your team you will probably spit chips, and if I insult any other team you will probably find it amusing. Most of all I want to be encouraging. Encouraging clubs to develop their cultures and their junior players. Encouraging them to only recruit players who will hang around for a few beers after a game. Encouraging more people to get out there and support local footy.
Both of these sides have replenished their stocks after underperforming last year. For Wallaroo that meant missing out on finals action. For the Skippy Roos it meant another year in the doldrums. The Doggies have welcomed Dean Cutting and Shane Jordan, two quality players who won Mail Medals with Moonta a few years back. They are both on the wrong side of 30 but a bit of experience is probably what Wallaroo needs. Wallaroo also has Jay Shannon fresh from the SANFL and several other recruits. Guessing the chocolate fundraisers proved extra successful recently. Not to be outdone, Ardrossan has picked up a couple of boys out of the Norwood system, and kept its dynamic duo of Scott Burnet and Steven Wellington. Wallaroo should be looking at the top four this year but it feels like we say that every year and are let down. At the final siren... Wallaroo by five goals.
Moonta v Kadina Moonta looked to be in the box seat for another flag last year, but it ended up having a funny old season. Some players got injured, others (like Jake Stoll) never turned up. By the end of the year Nick Prokopec had come out of retirement to sit in the goal square with eight tonnes of tape on his knee. Kadina started the season looking like an outside chance but quickly proved to be the best side in the comp. In case there was any doubt the Bloods would take the flag, ex-league player Jake von Bertouch joined them toward the end of the year to put them right over the top. Von Bertouch is now gone, along with Joel Palmer and Brendan Papps. The good news? Young gun Jack Elsworthy has returned home from the SANFL ressies and Derek Sansbury has, I assume, become another year younger. At the final siren... Kadina by a goal.
Paskeville v CMS Crows The Crows’ recruitment of big Michael Wundke was the talk of the preseason. The photo of him in the paper when he had an interview recently was perhaps a bit flattering, since it was from his South Adelaide days, but even with a few extra kilos Wundke will still be plenty mobile enough to create havoc. If the Crows mids can get the ball anywhere near him in the air he should be unstoppable. Paskeville has surprised me. After a tumultuous 2017 which ended in the Magpies saving a lot of coin, I expected them to blow all their cash at once. Instead they recruited three quality players and brought home some young ex-premiership players. Save that for your farms boys, there is no place for being financially responsible in this competition! At the final siren... CMS Crows by six goals.
Southern Eagles v Bute
Giles Ellis and Michael Hobbs fly for a mark during season 2017. Kadina and Moonta should be around the mark again this year.
The Eagles are a bit of a dark horse this year after recruiting well. Last season they did enough to make the five but couldn't go on with the job, so any improvement means they should be pushing for a crack at the grand final. Luke Hoare was a handy addition last year and, with Jarrad Redden, formed the league's best ruck-forward swinging duo. Now Hoare will have to take the lead role. Bute will continue to build and has some talented young players, along with a thriving social scene. A couple of the new boys arrive with big wraps from those in the know, but we will have to wait and see whether that translates to the Roosters being competitive on the field. I expect the Roosters' season will start with a long and probably rowdy road trip home after a sound defeat. At the final siren... Eagles by five goals.

“Aunty Flo” REPORT BY
WOWZA! Netball is back! Unfortunately, Netty Nanna has retired so I will be trying to fill her shoes this season. We all wish her good health and I look forward to stopping by for a cuppa getting a few tips along the way. I am super excited to be putting my two bobs worth in the paper each week, offering my opinion and trying to keep my finger on the pulse. Fingers crossed I don’t get too many knickers in a knot! It was fantastic to see YP field a side against other associations and state league club Tango in the new stadium at Kadina recently. Our local girls tested out the facility and it’s a ripper; a big pat on the back to the Copper Coast Council and the many helpers who have provided such a top class stadium in our area. The girls did a great job and congrats to coach Fiona Bussenschutt and team on winning the carnival for the first time, I believe. It is always hard to predict for round one especially when the southerners play their cards close to their chests. Cougars have the first week off, helping them get over Easter, so we’ll have to wait and see how young Sarah Luke has the side running. Ardrossan has appointed speedy mid-courter Taylor Winstanley as coach and she brings plenty of enthusiasm to the Roos line up and while they are missing Meg Rowntree (Crowell) I’m hoping the Roos boys have been good to the netball club and found some tall new netballers in the off-season. Wallaroo is unable to field an A grade this season and has been given an exemption. It will be a rebuilding year and I just hope some of their experienced players hang around to support their juniors. I can’t wait for Saturday to get underway! Please keep me in the loop and send any local knowledge and tips for the up and coming season to auntyflo@hotmail.com.
This is always an interesting battle with not a lot of love lost between either side, so it’s fantastic to see them meet in round one. Moonta coach Adele Keleher is fired up to play into September after her side was on the outer last year. She has allegedly recruited some wise blood in Narelle Koch and Nikki Bock back into the Demons’ dress. Both played for YPNA the other weekend neither look like they have had a year off. Alicia Cross is also meant to be returning and her strength and smarts in the goal circle with Tamara Lodge will make Moonta my season favourites. I don’t know too much about Kadina other than Sophie Chapman and Prue Hicks played well in the preseason cup. Chapman is tying the knot soon and when she doesn’t take the court it will be a very huge hole to fill. Hicks was solid in goals during the preseason match and is an underrated player who gets the job done without any fuss. Both of these girls will be the backbone of the Kadina line-up. At the final whistle... Moonta by 20 goals.
Southern Eagles v Bute I’m not sure if this is my match of the round or the Paskeville v CMS Crows match. Eagles have been lucky enough to keep Lynlee Hancock coaching this year and she will want to go one step further and compete in the grand final. Eagles had a great second round and finals campaign last year and if they find some consistency and the odd new recruit they will be my dark horse for 2018. Eagles always seem to have tall, lanky young girls. Maybe it’s the sea breeze? Young Alice Hickman played well for YP at Kadina and coach Hancock will be very happy to slot her in every week. I’m sure we will see some other new faces pop up as well and I look forward to reporting on them soon. Bute is a little unknown other than it will be under the watchful eye of Brigetta Cock. Although she will be a great coach, the association will miss her experience as an A grade umpire. Bute had some great younger players frock up for the senior sides last year and they will

be stronger this season. Allegedly, it has recruited some new players but we will have to see what happens this week before I can report too much more. At the final whistle... Eagles by eight goals.
Paskeville v CMS Crows Crows’ feathers will still be extremely ruffled after Pasky stole the last season’s grand final in a cracking display of netball. I’m still not sure how Pasky came back but it was a classic example of the champion team defeating a team of champions. But it’s a new season and both sides have a few changes to their teams. Crows goalie Jess Cocks has relocated to the Barossa for work so I would be surprised to see her back in tricolours but Tasmyn Biddell played well in goals for YP in the preseason cup and is more than capable of being their main target. Amanda Pitt is coaching the side this
year and will be great for the up and coming younger players to grab an opportunity. Pitt will also be very pleased with the return of Lauren McSkimming from Adelaide and her experience in defence along with the ever-reliable Hannah Short and younger sister Melissa McSkimming will create a nightmare for the opposition goalies. Pasky is always consistent and seem to deliver the goods at the right end of the season. I hear it will have a few new little sideline members who were delivered in the off season. Sally-Ann Heinrich has left and it will be interesting to see who they replace her with. I am sure coach Bussenschutt could slot herself into goals with the return of Amie Price in defence. I will pretty confidently put a packet of Tim Tams on both these sides playing well into August/September. At the final whistle... Crows by 10 goals.

How has your preseason been? Preseason has been well attended, with a good turnout in numbers for all senior grades. The club as a whole is looking strong. What do you hope to achieve this season? Being able to retain most players from 2017, there will only be a few minor changes to Kadina’s A grade side. Who is the team to beat and why? Probably Paskeville. Although a few from last year’s premiership side may be out, they are always very competitive. Player losses and gains? The club welcomes Lori Mildren, but will be without Hayley Gullery and Emily Boothey.

How has your preseason been? Preseason has only been okay. It has been a struggle to get consistent numbers on the track both in Adelaide and at home. That said the guys who have been regular attendees have benefited from the program in place.
for a little while without really showcasing his ability in the A grade, and this year I expect this to change. William Schultz will be playing his first full season of senior footy after returning from the Eagles and we are excited to see what he can deliver.
What do you hope to achieve this season? Back-to-back premierships would be great. Our goal is to finish top three to put ourselves in a good position come finals. We also want to further develop the players in our club, give plenty of opportunities and encourage their growth on and off the field.
Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: CMS Crows; Moonta; Kadina hopefully.
Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? Tom Munzer had a really consistent debut season and is set to take his game to the next level. Luke Pridham has been around
Half-back Flanker says... Kadina hit the ground running last year and never looked back. Its depth has been dealt a blow with the loss of some talented players, but there is plenty to like about the Bloods regardless. I wouldn’t throw money on them for the flag, but I wouldn’t count them out either.
Chris Flavel and Kadina hope to give their supporters something to cheer about again this season.

How has your preseason been? Preseason has been really strong. In past years we have started in December but following our finals exit last year we felt the playing group, on the back of some really strong seasons where we have played deep into September, needed a longer break. As a result we started in mid-January and have had a real focus on ball movement and skills. Our times suggest our fitness has increased again; however, the main emphasis has been on our ability to hit targets by foot.
Craig Taylor and the Moonta Demons took an extended break before ramping up for another push into September.
What do you hope to achieve this season? Again we hope to be extremely competitive week by week with an aim to have ourselves in a really strong position come the end of the year. Internally the hope of the coaching staff is to see the continued improvement of our young players, who all achieved premiership success in our B grade last year. Their organic growth and improvement will put the club in a strong position.
Moonta welcomes back big names

President Sue Beech is looking forward to a big year on the courts. “We had a great turn out for registrations and trials and have filled all grades, including coaching positions,” she said. “Our B grade has only two players from last year, stalwart Melissa Appleton and Kelly Galley, who will assist in developing a very young side. “We will continue to build our club camaraderie and develop our junior players for the future of our club. “We wish our teams every success for the season — go Demons!”

Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? We have a group of five or six second and third year players who I believe are going to become really strong A grade players in the next 12 months and future. In terms of some individuals to look out for, I expect breakout years for Joel Foster and Lachlan Slack, while I expect Tyler Andrews and Harry Vick to build on their growing reputations. Jono Ross will become a premier player in the competition.

Predict the top three sides at the end of the minor round: Moonta; Crows; Kadina.
Player losses and gains? We welcome back Alicia Cross and Narelle Koch after a couple of years away. We also are excited to bring Bec Butler up from our successful B grade team. Nikki Bock returns from pregnancy and will lead the team. We have lost Molly Tylor and Brooke Russell.
Half-back Flanker says...
Moonta is desperate for another premiership and has picked up some quality players to help with that goal. Big Jono Ross comes from the Port SANFL list and I look forward to see what Cameron Miller can do in a top team. Last year was disappointing but should have the Dees hungry.
with A grade coach Adele Keleher How has your preseason been? We have had a pretty quiet preseason but have upped the ante with some fitness sessions on Tuesday nights. Trials ran really well and all the girls are keen for a successful season. A grade team to beat in 2018 and why? We always rate Paskeville and the CMS Crows highly, and they never disappoint. Hopefully it is a close competition and all teams that have good hit-outs.

How has your preseason been? Preseason has gone quickly and we are glad the first game is nearly here. The playing group has been put through its paces under the watchful eye of our fitness coach Tom “Gilly” Gilligan. Gilly has trained and competed as a triathlete many bush cokes ago and with that experience he brought a range of great ideas, enthusiasm and humour to the preseason sessions. We acquired the help of Meg Elliot and her meta-fit sessions for the first month of preseason. Meg’s sessions were fantastic and while they didn’t draw any blood, there was certainly plenty of sweat and a few tears. Numbers on the track have been exceptional. We welcome Adam Pitt and his lackey Craig Fitzgerald for the first game.
Paskeville Netball Club is aiming for a third consecutive premiership in 2018, and should again be one of the benchmarks of the competition. The Magpies welcome back Amie Price, whose presence on the defensive end could allow player/coach Fiona Bussenschutt to move into the goal circle replacing Sally-Anne Heinrich. Amanda Carmichael, Prue Redden and Corrinne Bussenschutt are coaching the other senior grades, whilst Brooke Morris, Barb Price, Jane Bussenschutt, Steph Rundle and Cynthia Correll run the juniors.
“The 2017 season was very successful for us,” Fiona said. “Our new uniforms looked great and we were super proud to have two junior teams, G and F grades, make finals and our A grade secured back-to-back premierships in a nail-biting overtime grand final. “This season has started well with team registrations, trials and trainings being well attended. “We are excited to be able to fill a team in each grade for the 2018 season and look forward to many days of great netball throughout the winter months. “The coaching panel is ready to
support each other and work together to ensure all players get lots of opportunities to improve and have fun. “Stacey Evans is again our umpiring coordinator, so if you would like to learn how to umpire or you are an experienced umpire who would like to umpire on Saturdays, feel free to contact Stacey or the club. “The PNC committee has plans for club activities throughout the season including buddy nights, trips to Thunderbirds games, recovery sessions, mixed trainings with footballers and Saturday night teas.”
Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? We had a number of young players get some quality A grade experience last year so I hope many of them continue to improve and have exceptional years in 2018. One in particular is Alby Price. He comes from a fantastic breeding line and, if genetics has anything to do with it, he will be a star performer on and off the field.
Player losses and gains? We will have a few different faces through our team this year. With heavy hearts we say see-ya for now to Sally-Anne “Slazz” Heinrich, and we have a couple to work their way back in post-baby. Happily, Amie Price is back, and we also welcome a new netball/football couple to our club, and Skye Wittwer brings with her talent and enthusiasm.
Half-back Flanker says... Paskeville looks like being a big improver and the sides aiming for the fourth and fifth spots on the ladder will be nervous looking at the Magpies’ recruits. Adding half a dozen quality players to last year’s team won’t be enough for a premiership though.
Who are your up-and-coming junior players and why? Without an E grade last season, we don’t have any juniors stepping straight into seniors this year, but there are girls in the Es who have great potential and will improve each week. It is so exciting as a club we are able to fill all junior teams for 2018. We have a great bunch of enthusiastic players and coaches ready to play, learn and have fun.

How has your preseason been? As usual, preseason has been hot and a little messy while summer sports and other commitments wind up. Regardless, we have had excellent numbers for all grades and the girls have been up and about, keen to get into netty season. Team to beat in 2018 and why? I feel like this will be one of the tightest seasons the competition has seen for a while. CMS Crows will be as dangerous as ever, Southern Eagles will be keen to go deeper into finals and Moonta will be a super strong competitor. I’m also keen to see the improvement in Bute and the CY Cougars as the year unfolds.
What do you hope to achieve this season? Firstly, I hope the fun, enthusiasm and unity we saw last year from a young playing group continues. With a number of quality local players returning, a few new faces and a solid preseason under our belt, I expect we will be a much more competitive football side. We will set our sights on finals and anything is possible from there.

with coach Matt Wilkinson How has your preseason been? Numbers have been inconsistent. What do you hope to achieve this season? The club is aiming to finish in the top five initially, qualifying for finals. Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? Max Sanderson, Tom Giles, Tim Daniell, Tom Robinson. Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: CMS Crows; Moonta; Kadina.
Half-back Flanker says... The Eagles got better as 2017 went along and never looked in danger of missing the finals. They gave premiership hopefuls the CY Cougars a few headaches in the elimination final but couldn’t progress. They should be around the same mark again this year having recruited a couple of good players, although the loss of Jarrad Redden will diminish their high-marking options. I can’t see the Eagles moving up the ladder but they must maintain their impressive play from last year because several clubs are nipping at their heels for that finals spot.
How has your preseason been? It has been going really well, we have had a personal trainer come in to help with our fitness.

How has your preseason been? Preseason has been very solid and the group is looking mentally and physically prepared for the long season ahead. During the past few months we’ve had a huge emphasis on leadership amongst the group and ensuring the expectation of all players reflects our team values.
Wallaroo Netball Club has been granted an exemption from the Yorke Peninsula Netball Association to not field an A grade team for the 2018 season, due to low senior numbers. It has been 13 years (2005) since WNC was last unable to fill an A grade. “As a committee we have decided that it is time to rebuild our club and nurture our young players,” president Lyndall Neil said. “This will allow us to focus on developing our players in teams suitable for their age bracket and provide a specialised skill base which will recover confidence and enthusiasm. “Already we have seen a shift in motivation and commitment. “With the return of Brooke Bettess to our club this year we have gained her skills and knowledge as a personal trainer to build on our fitness. Good numbers in our junior ranks is encouraging. “We are aiming to build on the club’s strength and to be more competitive on court this year. “Our facilities are excellent and we are really happy with our new courts and canteen.”
What do you hope to achieve this season? Our playing group no doubt wants to participate in finals football this season. To achieve this, the playing group understands the journey is long and tough, but most importantly the players understand the importance of creating a strong culture week in, week out.

Who are the up-and-coming players to watch? Bailey Hann: A young midfielder with electric speed, a great baller carrier and very exciting to watch in and around stoppages. Lucas Kirley: This young man is very balanced up and around the forward line, and no doubt in the next few seasons will become an elite midfielder of the competition. Harry Errington: A young key-position footballer who reads the play like a general. He will no doubt worry many opposition footballers this season. Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: Southern Eagles; Wallaroo; CMS Crows.
Half-back Flanker says... Wallaroo has recruited strongly and should break into the top five. If that sounds familiar it’s because the Bulldogs were in the exact same position last year. It didn’t work out so well then. Player/coach Dean Cutting and his mate Shane Jordan each won a Mail Medal for Moonta before doing great things for the Eudunda Football Club. Perhaps their influence will elevate the playing group to reach its potential.

players. Gabby Rule has stepped up into Bs from C grade and Brooke Bettess has returned after a few seasons off. After losing several A and B grade players from last year I strongly believe our B grade has a great opportunity to be more competitive, to gain confidence and to continue to better our skills. Who are your up-and-coming junior players and why? Chantel Ramsey is our youngest player; however, this will be her second season in B grade, she has lots of skills and knowledge of the game, always puts in 110 per cent and continues to improve. We also have Larissa Wileman back for her second season in B grade. Larissa really stepped up last year, she gained confidence and a voice, and her height is definitely an advantage to have. Predict the top three at the end of the minor round: CMS Crows; Moonta; Southern Eagles.
