WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS A SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? All perpendiculars or orthogonals meet at the so-called vanishing point by the perpendicular drawn from the eye to the picture plane. Also, all parallels have a common vanishing point- if on a horizontal plane, their vanishing point lies on the horizontal. If it is 45 degrees, the distance from central and the distance between eyes and pictures is the same.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? Homogenous space is a mathematical space and it is an infinite space. It is impossible for human to observation and each time, it can only been view from a single perspective. The points consisted by the homogenous space are merely determinants of space. And these points are not theoretically points in perspectival space so it cannot be observed by human eyes.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC

Simple construction of my Quad by Rhino and adding texture to the floor.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC WITH NOTATIONS

Adding different symbols for my isometric to tell the story with expression.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 This view clearly showing the outside landscape and the sunlight which could help me to create a kind of dramatic atmosphere.

I further cut down this view, so that there is only one openness. It helps me to create sense of darkness and closeness, which forming a strong contrast with the first view.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

I supposed this place is a theater and the first view is the postcard. I chose characters from movie “Farewell My Concubine” as it has a tragic end which is the same with my story. I formed the view as a postcard to commemorate the most glorious moment of this theater and also this two characters. There is a strong contrast between Chinese art and western art which could increasing the sense of drama. Finally, I decreased the clarity of the man and the background to create a sense of camera which focusing on the woman.

The second view is about the tourist visiting this place. I use characters from movie “The Grandmaster”, but in my story they are still the two artists who are playing Opera in the first view. I gave walls some cracks to create a broken scene and some military material to show this is a munitions factory. The two artists are wearing really poor close but still with high-spirited. Hence my story aims to express reverence to these two artists and also regretful of this place.

View 1

In the first view, there is a very small crack between two hands on the painting. In the second view, the crack becomes larger. So, I trying to use this change to make a sugestion in the first view and a hint in the second view.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Architecture is neither allographic and autographic. Nowadays, architecture expects persistently updating techniques which focusing on the structure and the way of representaion. Architects need specifically enhance the coherence of architectural design with social science aspects and better reflect human’s physical and mental life.

By using these symbols, the story would present with expression. By increasing the density of walking symbols to express the visitor’s anxious mood and the size of the symbols to represent the size of steps due to the broken floor. Sit downsymbol means that the visitor had been attracted by the artists who was playing the Opera. Finally star symbol represent the visitor was gager to find the artists as the artists were disappear.

APPENDIX As the photo looks very unreal and plane, I use brushes and masks to give it some shadows and create a sense of rotation which make her looks more vivid. Especially to the bottom part, I make the floor and the dress together.

Adding light source and different types of light to the background to form a more dramatic atomosphere. Also, to make the theater looks more gorgeous.
