MODULE 1

HOW TO DRAW A CROISSANT

Introduction

In the first Module of the semester, we learned to measure a Croissant and construct orthographic projection drawings by hand. By using a photostage with two light sources, we got photos of two elevations and a plan view. Then, the crossiant had been cut equally along the short length into three parts. A scanner has been used to get photocopied plan and photocopied sections. An A3 paper including all of the photos and photocpied on it has been printed out with 1:1 scale. In the second week, we learned different drawing skills by overlaying tracing papers over the printed A3 paper. Using 0.3 fineline pen to draw an outline of the crossiant to mainly focus on the overall shape of the crossiant and divding parts of surface with different textures (smooth and rough). Then, hatching skills have been applied by using 0.15 and 0.05 fineline pen to showing the details on the surface. Finally, using shading skills by 4B and 6B pencils to represent the lightness and darkness of the crossiant. All of different skills were drawn on separate sheets of tracing papers and they have been scanned into the computer. Using photoshop to overlay the fineline layer, hatching layer and shading layer together and changing capacity and contrast for each layer to get the best overall drawings. Finally, setting up the axonometric by using the sections from the drawings. Photocopied the plan and set it up as the base for the drawing; rotate the plan 45 degree. Along the section line, projected a set of 10mm spaced lines vertically and then transfered the intersection point identified in item 1 onto the plan base to construct the axonometric drawing. When there were 3 sections, scanned the drawings; using photoshop to adjust levels to make sure the background is white.

Reflection

By studying the first module, I have learned so much knowledges including: model photography( lighting setup and composition); hand drawing skills and how do these skills different from each others. In addition, transfering physical drawings into computer and setting up the axonometric drawing are what I think the biggest challenges to me. I have tried several times with different base lines, and finally I understood the principal of setting up the axonometric, how does it works. As module 1 is the first designing assignment in my life and I only have two weeks to finish it, it is a really challenging work, but also really interesting.

MODULE 2

FLATNESS vs PROJECTION

MARIO WORLD

Introduction Module 2 mainly focus on determining differences between 'subjective' and 'objective' points of view, the idea between 'flatness' and 'projection'. Also begins to define 2D and 3D spatial constructions, and their impact on perception. By futher developing the axonometric skills from module 1, a new 3D Mario world has been made from two elevation plan view of old Mario world. By setting up workspace and project the first 2D Mario World template forward at 45 degree angle using tracing paper overlaid on the template. Using pencil and set square to project lines forward from the template. The second 2D Mario world has been projected backward with 200mm apart from the first one and repeated the the first step. Put two sheets of paper together by using photoshop. Adding characters, game objects and new spaces that have been created that cannot be seen in the original 2D level to the drawing. Once drawings are completed scan them and then, using illustrator to trace the drawings. Using the original Mario world as base colour palette to fill your drawings. Adding lighting and shadow, also giving gradient changes to color. Finally some details such as, textures have been added to the world.

Design Analysis

From the original 2D template, they are a kind of plant, so I keep them unchanged and give them a lower part. I create them as coconut trees which connect two parts of world and just let them grow freely and crazy with different styles. Because it is a surreal and vivid world that you could not imagine if you only see my upper world. Also, it is a kind of contrast between the precise and free.

The river acts as a connection between my upper world and lower world, also, it uses as a starting points where the Mario drops down from another world.

Using the cloud from the original 2D template as a boundary which dividing my Mario World into two parts. For the upper part of my world, I extactly keep all of the objects and locations from the original 2D template and two views the same. On this basis, adding extra objects to enrich my world. For this part of world, I want to form a kind of snowy, peaceful and dreamy wonderland, so I use very melting colors for them.

Creating a sculpture Mario and a real Mario character into my world. As the upper world is snowy, so I give the sculpture one with a scarf and a bit of snow. As a consequence, my character has a T-shirt and a shorts.

As the upper world is a snowy wonderland. I want to create a contrast between the upper and lower world to make my Mario world more interesting and dramatic during playing the game. Hence, I form my lower part of world like a tropical forest as the snow is melting down to the lower world. Really bright colors have applied to make my world more vivid and energetic, forming a kind of contrast between the upper world's peaceful and the lower world's colorful is my main design theme.

Legs and feet of a wizard- getting ideas from the fairy tale 'The Wizard of OZ'. I want to use this place as the final point of my Mario world, as the Mario finally defeats the wizard.

Different from module 1, module 2 is a more creative module as there are spaces that students can design by themselves, but we need to be careful about the 'subjective' and 'objective' points of view at the same time. Precession is the number one qualification(this is also what I need to be improved).

MODULE 3

PATTERN vs SURFACE

LANDSCAPE MODEL

Introduction

Panlised terrain in Rhino

Using Rhino panelling tool to explore a terrain, adding different elements to the terrain and changing the height for them to form an overall order. Then, unrolled the 3D panel and allow for tabs to the 3 edges of the panel.

Final panlised terrian

Working photos

Printed out the unrolled 3D panel on A1 papers. Overlaid the printed paper on a 260gsm paper and used a pen knife to cut the panel. After the physical model completed, I have set up a simple photostage at home and took photos of the model with strong lighting and special angle.

Design Thesis I am trying to form a contrast between closeness and openness also between two dimensional and three dimentional. So I gave the right hand side of my work, full of openness and all of blocks are three dimentional. On the left side, I decrease the number and the size of opennese and a 2D panel at the same time.

Introduction Students would recived different stories which talking about different cities. Based on the story, stuednt would deisgn their own cities. Using Rhino to built a 3D old Quad model and insert characters' and objects' photos into the Quad. Setting two camera views in the Quad and use Make 2D command to export the 2D image into illustrator. Finally using photoshops to adjust two images to make them look more three dimensional and accurate, also creating atomospheres based on the design.

STORY

Key Camera Sit Down Large Step Small Step Focusing Looking around Characters Light and Dark

Long time ago, this old Quad was a theater and two famous artists from China were invited to here and they were performing an Opera in the Quad. During the performance, a photographer took a photo for these two artists and made a postcard(perspective 1). After many years, Marco Polo received this postcard and he decided to visit this theater. When he arrived, he directly went to the place on the postcard and he just found everything was changed, the theater was totally broken and became a munitions factory. Then, he continued looking for the rest of the old Quad. When he just arrived at the middle of the Quad, he found there were two people performing at the end of the Quad. He was totally attracted with the performance, so he just sit down and watching them. After a while, he suddenly noticed these two people in simple clothes were exactly the two artists on the postcard. He stood up and ran really fast just like flying. When he finally reached the end of the Quad, the two artiests were just diappeared into clouds...... I want to use this work to show respects to all of artists around the world who continuously moving forward and never give up,and the hope for peaceful.

REFLECTION Throughout the course of this semester, I have learned so much theoretical knowleges and practical skills. As FODR is my first design course of my universiy life, I have found it really challenging. Module 1 is the start of our course, which is not really difficult comparing to the other modules and I have learned hatching skills which I have never tried before, so I redrew so many times and when I saw my progression after each time, I felt really exciting. The skill that I found really cool is the axonometic drawing I just felt it is a magic when I finished my axonometic. During Module 2, I have learned to use Illustrator which is quiet useful when you wanna to do graphic design with lineworks and colour. M2 is also much more challenging and due to too much ideas came out, I just forgot the most basic rule(axonometric). So after this module, I knew that the most important thing during design is precision and then is creativity. In addtion, start from this module, I noticed I am really weak in space arrangement. How to make my work not looks really messy is really hard and this is what I need to improve. Finally is the colour using, I wanted to create a colourful world, but at the same time to remain my world clean is a big challenge and still now I do not finish the refinement of my world. Module 3 seems like a disaster to me and I knew that my time management needed to be improve. I have got so much ideas and I gave most of them openness but with different styles. It wasted me lots of time, but even worsen my work, hence from this module I found I need to improve my ability of the overall control. About the Module 4, it seems like a combination of all of the skills and the knowlege I have learned through out the semester. I need to use photoshop, illustrator, indesign and Rhino at the same time. From the reflection of M2 and M3, this time I have spent lots of time on thinking and designing my work before started, rather than designing during the process and I tried to make really clean scenesbut with great effect at the same time. My photoshop skill have improved a lot during this module, but it still not enough and I always find I cannot achieve the effects in my mind by my poor photoshops skills. This course let me know the difficulty of studying design and what I need to improve. But I really feel I am a design student, after each module I was really pround of myself even those works are not good enough. All of these works seems like treasures which record all of efforts I had took during this semester.
