Radioshack

Radioshack Corporation, known as Tandy Corporation from when it was acquired in 1960 until mid-2000, is one of the largest consumer electronics retailers in the United States. The stores feature two main categories of goods and services—electronics parts and accessories, and telephones and telecommunications accessories— as well as audio and video equipment, satellite systems, personal computers, and other electronics products. Their original purpose was to provide equipment for the then-nascent field of amateur, or ham radio. However, through time, Radioshack decided to approach a broader audience, especially the mobile devices sector.

During its brightest years, in the late ’90s, Radioshack operated stores in the United States, Mexico, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. The ‘90s brought a rejuvenation of Radioshack’s core business. The company saw an explosion in personal communications. The company invented the Family Radio Service, which uses license-free 2-way personal radios. However, due to outdated management models, small variety of products, costumer service neglecting, shortage of products, Radioshack struggled with a long decay and, in 2015, they filled for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections.

The Visual Standards Manual

The New Logo The new Radioshack logo represents encouragement, forwardness and innovation. Through the new logo, we also would like to remind the public who we really are: a company that encourage builders to become innovators by providing them access to the necessary tools, which may be educational, social, technological, among others.

LOGO ELEMENTS Radioshack logo consist of two components which are the symbol and wordmark. These elements will be used in different situations defined on the section “Logo Versions. When a symbol and wordmark are combined, the result is called signature.

THE NEW LOGO

THE SYMBOL CONCEPT The symbol concept is inspired on Tangram. In Tangrams, the possibilities of achieving unique results are infinite while using the same seven pieces. As in a Tangram, Radioshack would like to provide the pieces for builders so they can learn, interact and innovate. As in a Tangram, the basic shape of the symbol is a square formed by two triangles. Differently from Tangrams which pieces cannot overlap, the negative space on Radioshack symbol is composed by two other Tangram pieces and the shapes were cut from the triangles. The symbol also highlights an arrow pointing on a vertical diagonal to the right, which represent positiveness, moving forward and innovation. In addition, the color also plays an important role. The bright blue, which we call Infinity Blue, represents inspiration, determination to reach the infinity and innovation.

WORDMARK The typeface used in Radioshack wordmark is Bebas Neue. To achieve better balance between the elements, we performed some modifications as shown on the sample, where the solid color is the new version and yellow strokes is the original version before being modified. Among the modifications, the letters strokes were reconstructed to make them even, as well as the letter width; the letters R, A, H and K’s x-heights were aligned and the width were adjusted to be consistent; letter R leg went through a slight modification to become vertically straight; the S an C letters were re-built to become more similar and balanced.

SIGNATURES Radioshack have two signatures which should be used in different occasions. As well as the wordmark and symbol, the signatures have defined proportions and measurements that must be strictly followed. It is important not to alter the proportions to keep consistency and enhance the visual identity strength.

Graphic Elements Our graphic elements purpose is to support the Radioshack’s visual identity, strength its consistency and memorizing and contribute to build dynamic layouts for publications and application on products. The origin of these elements are the shapes of the logo, which consist of basically diagonal and straight lines. As a result, graphic elements options are triangles that can be placed on the corners or pages or cross spreads, diagonal bars, colored lines or white lines on colored background.
