Maintaining a high-quality membership experience is a top priority for the Hillcrest Board of Directors and staff. In recent years, we conducted several projects designed to maintain and enhance our 87-year-old facility, including redevelopment of Teencrest, the pro shop remodel, and just last year, renovation of the bathroom, lobby, and office. We have received very positive feedback regarding these updates, all of which were funded through the Capital Improvement Program. It is vital to the continued success of our club that we keep the momentum going. For this reason, the Board has identified a three-phase plan to 1) ensure that our members receive an exceptional experience and 2) position Hillcrest competitively when compared to other clubs. Phase I will occur in 2015 and will include the following improvements:    

New boiler heating system Resurfacing of the tennis courts Sandblasting, repair, and repainting of the swimming pool along with a new sound system and new furniture for the pool area Improvements to the A Street entrance

To provide the needed funding for these projects, the Capital Improvement Program dues will be adjusted beginning May 1st. Regular memberships (currently $25) will now be $50, and social memberships (currently $20) will be $40. More information about this year’s enhancements and our long-range plan will be provided in the coming months. We truly believe it is an exciting time for both our club and members as we work together to ensure Hillcrest remains one of Lincoln’s top clubs. Thank you for being a part of the Hillcrest family and for your continued support.

Dear Members; It is hard to believe May is here! I hope the warm weather in early May is a signal that summer is here to stay. As always, Brian Hellbusch along with the Grounds and Greens Staff has the course in super condition. Please come out to enjoy your golf course and its beauty. Director of Golf Mike Brown

I am excited to announce the addition of our family short course. On Sunday evenings, during the months of May through August we will place a set of short course tees on the front nine holes. These tees will be at par 3 distances. A scorecard is available in the golf shop for any and all players wanting to challenge their short game skills. These tees will be set up on the course at 4PM each Sundays. Occasionally the course will be not available because of a previously scheduled member event. Please make a reservation for the short course by calling the golf shop. Hillcrest is thrilled to be a local qualifying site for The National Drive Chip and Putt Championship on June 13th. The finals will be contested at The Augusta National Golf Club in April of 2016. This is a great opportunity for local juniors as well as our very own Hillcrest junior golfers to compete in this fun and rewarding event. For more details or to register please visit www.drivechipandputt.com or visit the Hillcrest webpage to see the ad. The Nebraska PGA and Nebraska Golf Association will be on site operating the Drive Chip & Putt qualifier. The PGA and NGA have asked for volunteers from Hillcrest to help on the day of the competition. If you are interested in being a volunteer for this special day, please contact me (Mike Brown) at 402-489-8181. The Drive Chip and Putt competition will be using the driving range and large practice green. The golf course will still be available for regular member play. In closing, I am looking forward to our member enjoying a wonderful summer of golfing activities here at Hillcrest. This addition of the Highlights will help you make some golfing plans. A social member may rent the use of a riding cart. Reservations for play must be arranged by calling the golf shop 402-489-8181.

The dress code is in full effect May 1st until through October 1st The Board of Directors reminds all members and their families that the club does enforce a dress code for the golf course and all practice facilities.  All males must wear shirt with sleeves. Shirts without collars must be suitable country club style.  Males and females may wear shorts, as long as they are mid thigh length.  Jeans are not acceptable attire from May 1st through October 1st. Razor cuts or torn jeans are never appropriate.  Unacceptable dress includes tank tops, halter tops, tube tops, cutoff shorts, jogger shorts, gym shorts, and swim trunks.  Oversized and sloppy attire is not appropriate for a country club atmosphere.  Everyone must wear shoes. Shoes with pronounced heels and cleated soles are prohibited on the golf course.

Hillcrest Highlights

Guest Play 

A playing guest may be hosted for golf a total of 6 times annually and is inconsequential of the member hosting. This includes men’s stags, men’s golf breakfast and ladies guest events. All guest rounds must be registered in the golf shop and guest fees settled before play.

Handicap Policy In an ongoing effort to insure that our member-only and member plus guest events have strong participation the handicap committee will be conducting periodic handicap reviews. These reviews have been encouraged by the United States Golf Association in accordance with the USGA Handicap Manual. The main purpose behind the GHIN Handicap Service is to provide a fair Course Handicap for each player regardless of ability. Two basic premises underlie the USGA Handicap System: 1. Each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round regardless of where the round is played. 2. The player will post every acceptable round for peer review. Therefore the golf committee is implementing an ongoing program of handicap peer review. All members who carry handicaps at Hillcrest will be subject to adjustments if their handicaps do not accurately reflect their potential playing ability. A course handicap must reflect a players best potential, not an average. The Golf Committee expects all rounds played will be posted, with the following procedures to help members ensure they are accurately posting their scores: 1. Scores must be posted using Equitable Stoke Control (see the golf shop for procedure) 2. If a round is incomplete: 13 holes or fewer, the player must post an 18-hole score. If 7 to 12 holes are played; the player must post a 9-hole score. In either case, scores for un-played holes must be recorded as par plus any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on the un-played holes. 3. Post all score from the tees played. 4. Score must be posted as a “Tournament Score” if the event is so designated. Member bringing guest for events should make every effort to provide an accurate handicap for that guest. If guest scores’ do not reflect the handicap provided the committee reserves the right to adjust the handicap at the completion of play. Hillcrest Country Club has enjoyed terrific participation in our various events. Many things go in to a successful event experience… event promotion, staff preparation, course condition, and most importantly member participation. If members do not feel they are competing on equal footing with other participants, event participation will erode. The golf committee once again asks you to up-hold the honor of this very unique and incredible game by posting your scores accurately. Thank you for your cooperation in all these matters. Sincerely, Hillcrest Golf Committee

We have a few changes on the coaching staff: Jordan Brozek will assist Kara Hellbusch and Olivia Appleget with the 8 and unders, Thomas Hafner will be moving up to assist Maggie Bach with the 9-10’s and Crew Keller will be moving up to help me with the 11–18 age group. Other returning pool staff members include: Brooke Wissler (manager), Claire Fortenberry, Braly Keller, Maddie Tolly, Sammy Zitek and Hannah Zuercher. We also welcome Joseph Berrick and Jacob Olson as new staff members.

Aquatics Director Jeanette Keller

Those who sign up for swim/dive team by May 11th, will receive their team t-shirts the first week of practice. If you sign up after May 11th, you will be on the second order, which should come in time for the first meet on June 15th. Parents are welcome to order team shirts too! Please try to avoid substituting swim team for swim lessons. Your swimmer will have more success when they compete, if they can master breaststroke or butterfly. Summer is the best time to take swim lessons –there is so much practice time! We have one pre-season swim team clinic scheduled for Saturday, May 23rd, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We highly recommend this clinic to anyone new to the Hillcrest swim team. It is a great opportunity to get to know the coaches, and for our younger swimmers to polish up on their strokes before our first practice. (Note: swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards, continuously, to be on the swim team.) Our league recommends swimmers be at least 6 years old, before joining the swim team. We would like to see swimmers pass Level 3 before joining the swim team. Parks and Recreation requires that divers be 6 years old before competing. There is also a pre-season dive clinic May 26th – 29th, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. This is open to anyone, age 6 – 18, who wants to learn more about diving, or returning divers, who would like to get ready for the summer season. Our first week of swim team practice (May 26 – 29), will look a little different. Swimmers, age 11– 18, will practice from 10:30 am –11:15 am; and our swimmers who are age 6–10, will practice from 11:15 am–12:00 pm. We are hoping this schedule will be a little less crazy for our first week in the pool. Mark those calendars! The Championship Swim Meet is Monday, July 13 th and the Championship Dive Meet is Thursday, July 16th. If anyone is interested in lap swimming in the a.m. before our programs start, please let me know. Please remember to accompany your guests to the pool, and don’t forget to sign in at the sign-in desk. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the pool. If you need anything before then, my e-mail address is bk04745@windstream.net. See you soon,

Jeanette Keller

Swim Team Suits Attention current and new team members Our team suits will be the same as last year, but, because it is the second and last year for the girl’s suits, we had to change vendors to get some suits reserved for our team to purchase. If you need to try on a suit to figure out your size, there is a sizer kit at the club which can be used for that purpose. Suits purchased on the website will reflect a 25% discount and will be shipped to Hillcrest free of charge. The first order will close Monday, May 11 th.

Dear Members; We are pleased to announce to you that the tennis courts are scheduled to get resurfaced in early May! With that being said, May 4-22nd clinics will be put on hold until we know when they will be finished.

San Nelson Director of Tennis

Juniors: We will still have our 1st week out of school clinics (May 25th-29th) that we use to help us place some junior players for our monthly session clinics. Please keep in mind that even if you have conflicts with our class times, you should still consider having them partake. We will work with your schedule as necessary. Prices on classes are very reasonable and as long as beginners do not miss the 1st week of classes this should still be considered a good value. Older Beginners should consider the Intermediate class time as we will have an instructor strictly for “Older Beginners that would like to give tennis a try! 10 and Under Tennis. Hillcrest's new courts will have USTA approved 10 and under lines that will help us train and compete towards attaining a great 10 and under program (no more chalked lines)

Adults: Please consider marking your calendar and partaking in our monthly doubles theme nights. We will also keep offering cardio tennis times and free beginner clinic on Thursday nights as well. I am also pleased to announce that the same tennis staff is coming back to assist for the 2015 season! We look forward to meeting all new members and would like to encourage you to stop by or contact me if you have any interest in playing tennis. Please call the tennis shack if would like to make sure a certain court and time is available or would like us to help set-up ball machine for you. Thank you to all who attended our Meet the Pro’s event. If you were not able to make it, please don't hesitate to contact me for sign ups and questions, or to be added to tennis specific emails.

Thank you,

Sam Nelson Director of Tennis Hillcrest Country Club
