Our Family Tees (pictured on the following page) have been installed on the front nine, and are available for play. These tees offer an on course option for fun family golf. A family course scorecard will be available in the golf shop beginning in May. Along with our youth and novice golfers, we encourage all level of players to challenge their short game abilities and try out these tees. The Blue Tee Plate is an ideal starting point for golfers whose average drive is up to 120 yards. The Gold Tee Plate is for those golfers driving the ball between 120-160 yards. These tee plates are located in the center of each fairway. Usage tips include: it is not necessary to tee directly next to the yardage plate. Please use them as reference point as this will help to avoid divot patterns forming next to tee plates. We ask players to use a golf tee when hitting first shots as well as sanding any divots. Slower groups should always let faster groups play through. Late afternoon and evening play is recommended to enjoy our family tee option. Hillcrest is thrilled once again to be a local qualifying site for The National Drive Chip and Putt Championship on June 3 rd. For more details or to register please visit www.drivechipandputt.com . Additionally, you can visit the Hillcrest webpage to see the ad. The PGA and NGA have asked for volunteers from Hillcrest to help on the day of the competition. If you are interested in being a volunteer for this special day, please contact me at 402-489-8181 or (DCP Volunteer Committee Captain) Kyle Hershberger at kyle@crossfinancial.com. The Drive Chip and Putt competition will be using the driving range and large practice green. The golf course will still be available for regular member play. In closing, I want to thank Andy Reetz for his many years of strong leadership at Hillcrest. In our daily effort to offer an excellent experience for our membership, it is instrumental to have a positive and effective working relationship with your coworkers and senior staff. Andy led this effort every day and inspired me to be the best golf professional I possibly could be. I will always be grateful to Andy for that experience. As the staff at Hillcrest looks forward to our next exciting chapter, we all wish our friend Andy and his family the best. Sincerely,

Mike Brown

A joint initiative founded in 2013 by the Masters Tournament, United States Golf Association and the PGA of America, the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is a free nationwide junior golf development competition aimed at growing the game by focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf. By tapping the creative and competitive spirit of girls and boys ages 7-15, the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship provides aspiring junior golfers an opportunity to play with their peers in qualifiers around the country. Participants who advance through local, sub-regional and regional qualifying in each age/gender category earn a place in the National Finals, which is conducted at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before the Masters Tournament and is broadcast live by Golf Channel. HANDICAP INFORMATION USGA HANDICAP PR0CEDURE 3-5 The Hillcrest Handicap Committee has adopted the following procedure for competing from different sets of tees during selected Hillcrest events. During our Men’s events, with the exception of the Eliminator, a player 70 year of age and older has the option of competing from the Gold Tees. The player MUST designate when signing up for the event his wish to play and be handicapped for the Gold Tee. The player will have the difference of 2 stokes deducted from his White Tee handicap. The Committee will have final the decision on event where 3-5 will be available for players. Formula: white course index 71.8 – gold course index 70.0 = 1.8 (rounded up) = 2 NOTE: 3-5 is not available for The 2017 Eliminator.

HANDICAP ALLOCATION CHANGE: The Golf Committee with the approval of your HCC Board of Directors has made the following change to the course handicap allocation. • •

Hole #1 is now course handicap 9 Hole #9 is now course handicap 5

These changes have been made to the scorecard and are in effect for all play and events in 2017 and beyond.

Page 19

Dear Hillcrest Golf Membership, The following letter will detail Hillcrest Country Club’s golf handicap program. The golf committee would ask that you familiarize yourself with this important information concerning members and guest handicaps. In an ongoing effort to insure that our member-only and member plus guest events have strong participation the handicap committee will be conducting periodic handicap reviews. These reviews have been encouraged by the United States Golf Association in accordance with the USGA Handicap Manual. The main purpose behind the GHIN Handicap Service is to provide a fair Course Handicap for each player regardless of ability. Two basic premises underlie the USGA Handicap System: • Each player will try to make the best score at every hole in every round regardless of where the round is played. • The player will post every acceptable round for peer review. Therefore, the golf committee is implementing an ongoing program of handicap peer review. All members who carry handicaps at Hillcrest will be subject to adjustments if their handicaps do not accurately reflect their potential playing ability. A course handicap must reflect a players best potential, not an average. The Golf Committee expects all rounds played will be posted, with the following procedures to help members ensure they are accurately posting their scores: • Scores must be posted using Equitable Stoke Control (see the golf shop for procedure) • If a round is incomplete: 13 holes or fewer, the player must post an 18-hole score. If 7 to 12 holes are played; the player must post a 9-hole score. In either case, scores for un-played holes must be recorded as par plus any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on the un-played holes. • Post all score from the tees played. • Score MUST be posted as a “Tournament Score” if the event is so designated. • Scores should NOT be posted when playing alone for leisure or practice, as these rounds are not subject to peer review. Member bringing guest for events should make every effort to provide an accurate handicap for that guest. If guest scores’ do not reflect the handicap provided the committee reserves the right to adjust the handicap at the completion of play. Hillcrest Country Club has enjoyed terrific participation in our various events. Many things go in to a successful event experience… event promotion, staff preparation, course condition, and most importantly member participation. If members do not feel they are competing on equal footing with other participants, event participation will erode. The golf committee once again asks you to up-hold the honor of this very unique and incredible game by posting your scores accurately. Thank you for your cooperation, Hillcrest Golf Committee

Dear Members, The approaching summer swim season has many people so excited for the pool to open. Parents have commented about how happy their children are during the swim season. In Wallace J. Nichols book, Blue Mind, he reveals the surprising science that shows how being near, in, on or under water, can make you happier, healthier, more connected and better at what you do; not to mention reducing stress and bringing peace to our lives. We see this on a daily basis at the pool. Last Fall, there were a number of members who were able to stretch the lap swimming season into September. I hope that the morning lap swimmers will be back when we open in May, as it is such a wonderful way to start your day. If you are interested in lap swimming (at any time of the day), please let me know. Kris Hoffman, head coach of The Nebraska Diving Club, and Natasha Chikina, the head coach of the University of Nebraska women’s diving team, along with Hillcrest coaches, Maddie Tolly and Hannah Westbrook return to offer a diving clinic, Tuesday, May 30th through Friday, June 2nd, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. This was a very successful season for the Nebraska divers, and having the opportunity to work with these elite coaches is pretty exciting. It is open to divers of all ability levels, ages 6 – 18. Participants do not need to be members of the diving team. Our pre-season swim team clinic is Saturday, May 27th, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. This is highly recommended for new swimmers, and it is a good opportunity for all swimmers to get some coaching before the craziness of that first week of practice. We will run two sessions of practice for the first week of swim team. All 11-18 year olds will swim from 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM; and swimmers, age 10 and under, will practice from 11:15 AM to 12:00 PM. As always, the first week of both swim and dive team will be a free “try-out” week. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards, continuously, to be able to join the team. Our league recommends that swimmers be at least 6 years old to participate. The Parks and Recreation League requires that divers be 6 years old to compete. We are very fortunate to have many familiar coaches returning this summer: Braly Keller, Molly Zuercher and Joseph Berrick will coach the 8 and under age group; Jordan Brozek and Hannah Zuercher will work with the 9 – 10 year olds; and Crew Keller will assist me in coaching the 11 -18 year olds. Other returning staff members include: Brooke (Wissler) Kittell, Jacob Olson, Allison McElroy, Jared Murray, Joey Brozek, Olivia Coffey and Sydney Long. Skye Wellman will be joining our staff this summer as well. Thank you to those who came to sign up at “Meet the Pros”. If you missed it, there is a sizing kit for our team suits, in the main office. The suits are the same as last year (solid navy with our club logo printed on them). These customized suits can only be purchased through Sylvia’s Swimwear (in Washington). You can order them on their website, at www.goswim.com (code is HILLCREST, password is hillcrestcc). The first deadline to order is Wednesday, May 10th, by 9:00 AM (PST). If you order before then, you can have your order shipped to the club at no charge. The store will re-open after the first deadline, and those orders will be filled at a later date. All orders placed after the deadline will be shipped to your home, and shipping charges will apply (orders over $100 will ship free). Allow approximately 3 weeks for delivery. Every swimmer/diver receives a team shirt, and

A Message From the Aquatics Director

those who sign up by Tuesday, May 16th, will receive their shirt the first week of practice. Those who sign up after May 16 th may not receive their team shirt until after the first meet. You can reach me at: bk04745@windstream.net, or sign up at the pool (489-1840), when we open for the season. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental deaths for children, age five and under, so please enroll your children in swim lessons and watch them closely around the water this summer! Please also take a minute to talk to your children about not using the pool if they are not feeling well or have recently had diarrhea. Guidelines for responding to fecal incidents have become more strict and in some cases result in closing our pool for 24 hours or more. I cannot emphasize enough, to closely monitor your young children and educate all children, as these accidents are very costly. In response to these accidents, staff must check the pool water every 30 minutes (in many cases overnight), club revenue is lost, chemical expenses increase and it causes such an inconvenience to our members. Non toilet-trained children must wear swim diapers (which are available at the pool). Your help with this matter is greatly appreciated. We appreciate your help in reserving the gate adjacent to Teencrest, for golfer use only. Please remember to sign in at the sign-in desk every time you come to swim (whether you are bringing guests or not). I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

A Message From the Aquatics Director

Greetings, We are looking forward to a fun filled tennis season at Hillcrest and we are very excited to put the new tennis facility to use! We would like to welcome back HCC tennis staff members: Chris Stock, Jacob Wenger, Skyler Kilzer, Mason Williams, Jake Tegler and Bridget Mckeegan The new tennis area gives us the potential to have new and exciting events such as family fun nights (adult/junior clinics which could include daycare for a minimal charge). If there is any interest we could still add these to our program this year. Below is a basic overview to get us started in May and June. You can email to sign-up or call me if you have any questions. All racket orders and stringing will be done via email as well through May. Please help us advertise our proud HCC tennis tradition by purchasing $10.00 Hillcrest tennis dry-fit shirts. These will be available to purchase at any time. Here's to a great summer! Sam Nelson HCC Tennis Director 9401 O Street (p): 402-489-4111 (C): 402-430-2923 (f): 402-489-7123
