The legend started in 1980, after my guest Fred Burklund drank 19 beers in 18 holes during the last round in the Member-Guest Tournament. Mouri Spence (Mr. Dirt), the superintendent of grounds and I were talking after the match and I told him “I have to get a beer truck to haul around with us.” I told him I was going to design a trailer and had noticed a scrap Cushman rear-end in the weeds at the back of Mauri's shop. Construction began over the winter, and in 1981, day one of the Member-Guest, at 7:30 am I introduced my guest Fred Burklund to his easy pour beer distribution system. At 7:30 am he had his first beer and on the final hole of the tournament (# 16) he poured his last. I drove my ball straight into the trees and Fred topped the ball in front of the tee box. We were playing best ball we knew we were done. Then Fred pulled out his mulligan, saved especially for this moment. Fred gets up and hits a 5 wood two inches from the hole and we won the 1981 Member-Guest by ONE shot. With success comes innovation. My old buddy Kirk Reimers, my engineering contact at Cushman, arranged for me to buy a Cushman truckster (the one with a deck behind the seat). I mounted the 300 gallon tank on it and it worked well enough, until the electronic started to go. I still wonder if Mike Knezovich didn’t have something to do with it, since he was the last guest I invited to the 1989 MemberGuest. Thank God he joined the club shortly after that. And it was back to the drawing board. Because we had so many visitors during the tournament and at times slow play, our Walker Tire Beer Transport had a true service problem. The answer was a dual axel trailer with 4 bar stools. If you get the luck of the draw and are close to us during the next Member-Guest, do not be offended if some one shouts “BEER”

Dear Members;

Director of Golf Mike Brown

Our 2015 Championship Weekend at Hillcrest lived up to its billing! Congratulations to Chris Ober for claiming his first Men’s Club Championship title. Ober has been gaining on this championship the last few years and 2015 was his time. In the final match against Jayme Tschirren, Ober birdied the last three holes of this hotly contested match. Both their play showed why they made the finals. We had great matches throughout the tournament. Kelsey Marshall defends as Ladies Club Champion with steady play and scores of 79 – 77 for a 156 total. Past champion Karen Ogle finishing 2nd overall with rounds of 87-89. Maureen Hake won her 4th straight Masters Division title with scores of net 72-78. Congratulations to our Champions! Please see the full results from Championship Weekend in this addition of the Highlights. The Husband-Wife teams converged on Hillcrest in great numbers again this year. Chris & Michelle Ober won the tournament with a -7 (65) net best ball score. Skip & Jan Semin tied for second with Bob & Joyce Nohavec at -4 (68). See the full recap of scores in this addition of the Highlights. The Junior Program wrapped up in August with the skills competition and awards luncheon. Many of our juniors showed great improvement with their golf swings and short game skills. 100 plus juniors participated in many golf opportunities during the summer. Grant Johnson broke through this summer and claimed his first Junior Club Championship. Grant shot 79 and then held off defending champion and friend Steve Strasheim in a one-hole playoff. Both players have worked at improving their respective games and have great things that await them in golf. Congratulations to Issac Carpenter for winning the boys nine-hole divisions in our Junior Club Championship. Cole Gamet and his father Scott won the Parent-Youth Tournament, and Jack Lyon was the Junior Golf Sportsmanship Award winner. Please see more about the Junior Program results in this Highlight’s issue. With many great golfing months remaining this season, please consider some of the fun membership events scheduled for September and October. Best in Golf,

Dear Members,

Aquatics Director Jeanette Keller

The swim team has brought home the league title again! For the sixth year in a row, the swimmers came together and made us all proud to be a part of such a spirited, dedicated and FUN team! Hillcrest swimmers combined to win 40 of the 78 events at the meet and set 11 of the 21 new meet records. Please see the following pages for complete tournament results. Our dive team grew in numbers and had a great championship meet (team scores were not available). Coaches Maggie, Maddie and Aaron loved working with everyone and appreciated the enthusiasm and great attitudes! Thank you to the swim and dive team parents for your support of the coaches and the program! We look forward to seeing everyone back next year! Mark your calendars for next year’s championship swim meet: Monday, July 18 th! If you missed our banquet, you can pick up your awards at the pool. Team pictures and DVD’s are also available. The pool will remain open as usual, through September 7th, closing each evening at 8:00 p.m. We hope to see you for the End of the Season Bash on September 7 th!

What a fantastic summer! Check out some of the Highlights from our 2015 Tennis Season:

San Nelson Director of Tennis

May  The courts were resurfaced and replacement sunset maples were planted to the east of the tennis courts  We received great numbers for first week out of school clinics held at Pius June  The rain kept conflicting but we figured out ways to still play. We had over 130 junior players participating in 2015 including private lessons and special groups! July  Varsity team finished 5-1 respectively.  Participation was even better than June and our team was spectacular this year, with a great mix of kids all working hard to be better tennis players. Late July/Early August  Day Camps and High School Prep Camps occupy this two week stretch. Players and coaches seem to enjoy the change of scheduling which allows certain players to play everyday and really figure out there tennis games. Hillcrest Junior Tournament Seems to be a good turning point following the last week of morning camps and High school prep camps. We had the weather threaten us yet again, but subsided just in time to have a great tournament weekend! 2015 Champion/Runner up Singles Boy's/Girl's 10 and under winner …… Boy's 12's ……………………………………….
