PASSION PROJECT
W
HEN WE WERE KIDS, we were always asked, "what do you want to be when you grow up?" My answer was a
whole array of things from ballerina to baker. After many years of trying to figure it out, I finally determined that a life of journalism was for me. Zardozi is a culmination of that dream. Our team has worked tirelessly devoting time we sometimes don’t even have to make this magazine a reality. We hope you love our second issue even more than the first. There are many Zardozi women out there that live their passion daily like the British model in this issue, to the many
TARA GOLD & TURQUOISE SUHANA RING MAX AND CHLOE, $150
women we feature on our website weekly. And even though all their styles vary, one thing we all share is the desire to mix our South Asian culture with our Western surroundings. Zardozi aims to bridge that gap by bringing you the latest on both sides of the fashion spectrum. You will see that on our many pages from the Rang Report to Florals. Winter might be chilly, but there’s no reason to hibernate. Instead showcase bright hues to contrast the snowy skies. Or brighten up a black and white outfit with the pretty accessories in our shopping section. But we aren’t just about style here at Zardozi. We want to tell interesting stories and bring you the latest news affecting South Asian women worldwide. Brown skinned beauties can be found in every corner of the globe and we want to reach out to as many as possible. Tell us what you think about our second issue by emailing us at editor@zardozimagazine.com!

AN
international model's LIFE Hair Daze
I booked a L’oreal shoot. At the casting I agreed I was open to subtle coloring and cutting. But I ended up spending eight hours in the salon a couple of days before the shoot. The day of the shoot consisted of three different looks: straight, big and bouncy, and crazy curls.
wardrobe change I just did a catalogue shoot which usually involves around 30 changes, which is stressful yet manageable. But this week there were 75 changes. I definitely beat my personal best! The wardrobe was a mixture of salwar kameez and nighties (long granny style).
casting call One was for Dabur energy tablets where I had to bounce a basketball and smile. Another was for an IPL (cricket) TV ad and another for Dabur Alma hair oil where I had to do gymnastics. I have also been auditioning for catwalk shows. My booker has got me an audition where I’ll have to recite a script in Hindi. Should be interesting, but worth a try.

LIFE
as an off-duty model
IN MUMBAI
creepy crawlies I found a huge lizard residing in our kitchen. I couldn’t sleep that night and I am keeping my bedroom closed at all times in case he decides to relocate!
social butterfly Fortunately I have quite a few Indian friends out here in Mumbai, who I met in university in London. So on my free evenings I get taken out to some great places, like a Lebanese restaurant in Andheri West. Another friend recently took me to get some long-awaited sushi.
model behavior There’s quite a big population of foreign models here in my area. The other night my flatmates and I attended a model party at a club in Bandra. Models sure know how to party.
beauty treatment I wear acrylic nails and found a lovely spa/salon place to fill them in. So far so good, although they were a bit more expensive than in London.

sonalunscripted... Scrubs actress Sonal Shah shares the ups and downs of life in Hollywood
M 76
y name is Sonal and I am just a little brown girl trying to survive in Hollywood. Life here is crazy. Acting consumes my entire existence. I am usually doing something acting related because I love it. I have always been a performer and have strived to make people laugh, but I did not necessarily want to pursue acting as a career.
woman | zardozi.
“Life here has been glamorous, but also full of struggle.” I thought saying, “I want to be an actor” was like saying, “I want to be a quarterback” (I am actually pretty ripped). After majoring in theatre (yes, you can major in theatre and still be pre-med), I bought a car, packed it up, said bye to Wheaton, Illinois and drove across the nation all by myself. A week later, my agents sent me out on a Nickelodeon pilot seeking minority female improvisers. I almost booked it and got to improvise with Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) at the audition. After some time, I booked my biggest job — a series regular on a pilot for ABC Family. But it did not get picked up. Life here has been glamorous, but also full of struggle. I have been a waitress and scrubbed floors, but all of that has made me the person I am today. Eventually I auditioned for Scrubs. After three auditions, I never heard back. Then three months later I got a call from my agent telling me I was going to work on the show the next week. It was crazy, fun, nerve-wracking, emotional and amazing all at once. I ended up shooting eight episodes playing Dr. Sunny Dey in the show’s final season. I was pre-med in college so working on that show was a dream come true. I became overwhelmed with fear and insecurity. I did not get many auditions after that, but over the years I tested for seven network shows. Word on the street is that George Clooney tested for eleven before he booked ER, so I still have hope.
I am the queen of second place. I have almost gotten a role so many times. What this tells me is that I am on the right path. That is what keeps me going. I have no doubt that it is going to happen. That being said, believe you me, it’s not always sunny in Sonal-delphia. I definitely have days without hope. I have days (sometimes weeks) where I think it is never going to happen. One day, a person will stop me on the street to take a photo with me and the next day I will be that person’s waitress. This business is just plain weird. I think it is very important to stay grounded with a good sense of perspective. Nobody ever said life was easy. Most of my friends are having babies and I’m still a struggling artist. Every so often, I do crave stability. But, to be honest, my unstable life has also been so fun. Of course, my parents just want me to get married. I understand their concern. To be honest, I am even a little concerned about it myself. I will get married one day. I am just looking for someone amazing that sees my amazing. And I cry. Believe me, I cry. A lot. So why don’t I just move back? What keeps me here? The dream is what keeps me going. The biggest thing I have come to realize is that the journey itself IS the destination. When I arrived here many years ago, I was young, fresh, wide-eyed and a virgin. Too much information? I may or may not still be a virgin. That is for you to never find out. Ring the Bells A Punjabi bride often wears dome shaped bells on her bangles. These are given to her by her friends and cousins as a sign to remember them after she goes off into married life. Sometimes coconut and fruit are tied into the bells. Long ago when the bride left home and traveled far with her new groom, it helped her stay nourished along the way.

The bride and groom’s families are usually ready for a little game of tug of war when it comes to the groom’s shoes. The game of stealing shoes helps to break the ice between the families and makes it just a bit harder for the groom to steal away his bride, unless he wants to leave barefoot. 114

Bangles Punjabi brides wear red and white bangles. Although traditionally they should be kept on for a year, these days they keep them on for a month. The longer they are kept on, the less likely the new bride has to do any housework. Not a bad deal!
