As teenagers, my sister and I used to buy the latest “trends” at the local big box retailer. Our dad would rummage through our purchases and shudder when he saw all the polyester flowing from our bags, saying the material felt slippery and cold. My sister and I would laugh this off, thinking dad didn’t know about fashion, dressing in linen suits and always insisting that everything he wore be made of natural fabrics, nothing synthetic. Now years later, I find myself thinking of all those times he insisted on well-made materials. As I browse around, I see store upon store becoming paradises for fast fashion. That’s when I realized that I had turned into my Dad, insisting on only the best fabrics to keep me looking both stylish and comfortable in textiles with roots. That’s why here at Zardozi, we celebrate South Asian designers who support local artisans by creating outfits with beautiful weaving and texture. A piece created by hand seems to be a dying art, but there are many designers who are working to ensure that this skill lasts for years to come. During a recent Zardozi trip to India, we went to Lakme Fashion Week and met with designer Shilpa Reddy, who is working to bring back traditional fabrics like khadi. It was inspiring to see so many strong, passionate and talented women showcase their work on the glimmering Lakme stage and we were honoured to be part of it. It was a thrilling adventure and also life-changing. You will be hearing much more about our trip to India on Zardozi in the weeks to come and we would love to hear from you to discover your favorite places to shop in South Asia. We hope you love this issue and we are certainly looking forward to many more with you!

The Collection Tell us about The Untainted Shine collection. What’s behind the name? The collection has been inspired by royalty and features interesting motifs such as 3D flowers, pearls and diamantés. Likewise, the fabrics used are also very luxurious such as organza, pure silk and georgettes, which have a touch of shimmer. That’s what inspired the name The Untainted Shine. 52

T   he one trait they all share is that they are comfortable in their own skin and carry everything with elegance. I would have loved to design for Lady Diana. 53

How do you manage to stay on top of things when preparing for a demanding high profile show like PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week? To stay on top of things in any field, one should be very well organized. I plan everything out with my team far in advance so that there are no chances of any mishaps occurring at the last minute. That's how I work.
Pakistan’s Fashion Industry More recently, South Asian designers have become increasingly popular in the West. How can Pakistani designers become more mainstream among non-desis? Pakistani designers have a lot of potential in the western market. In the past designers such as Maheen Khan and Nilofer Shahid have received great responses internationally. To become mainstream, we definitely need to market ourselves better. We will also have to master the art of fusion designing. Our ethnic embellishments can be infused beautifully with Western cuts. This is one aspect which I feel our designers have still not fully explored. To make it big as a designer in Pakistan, you have noted finding the right talent and raising capital as key Any other tips for aspiring designers? Don’t decide to become a fashion designer if you are smitten by the glamour. T here’s a lot of hard work involved. Fashion designers spend most of their time working in their studios till late. You have to be very passionate about designing, but at the same time you should also understand the business side of fashion. Be very realistic about your customers in terms of designing and pricing. 54

Life Lessons The pressure on young girls to look thin and flawless is overwhelming these days with unattainable standards set by the industry.  What’s your philosophy on this? I always make sure that my clients are comfortable in whatever I am designing. I understand my clientele and make clothes for them accordingly. I agree that the media worldwide has set up unrealistic expectations of women, which I strongly oppose. Everybody should dress up to feel good, not to meet certain societal expectations. What is the most satisfying part of your work as a designer? What makes it all worth it? The most satisfying part of my work is that I get a chance to use my strongest talent, which is designing. It used to be a hobby initially, so I am lucky to be making a living from what I truly enjoy doing. The positive feedback I receive from my customers is what makes it worth it.

Why did you call your blog Big Hair Loud Mouth? I felt that the name should describe the person I am, as well as what my blog was going to be about. My signature is my ever changing hairstyle and my choice of bold lip colour. How would you describe your style? I would say my style leans more towards chic and edgy. I’m very choosy about what I wear and the fabric and the tailoring. I don’t run after what is coined as the “trending must-haves.” How do you incorporate Indian fashion into your everyday wear? I’m blessed to be a citizen of a country with such a rich culture and heritage with handlooms and jewelries born from the different states each telling their own story. India is a
country of colours and prints and I try to incorporate something that is Indian made paired with western outfits to create a fusion. Why did you choose a career in fashion and what did your family think of that choice? After I started blogging, I realized I had never felt more alive in my life; hence I resigned from a technical job of three years to give my all to the fashion industry. My family, luckily for me, couldn’t have been more supportive. They have been giving me a much required push, more than what I had expected, to find happiness in what I love to do. What are your top five style must-haves? A beautiful scarf, a pair of sunglasses, a watch, a great pair of stilettos preferably black and a classy handbag. 59

Fashion in India is ever evolving and Masoom Minawala is at the front of that wave of change. The CEO of fashion portal Style Fiesta came up with the idea after being asked repeatedly where she bought her clothes. Her answer was always that she made her purchases when she traveled to other countries. That’s when the 22-year-old Mumbai resident realized that India needed international trends at affordable prices. How is fashion in India changing? Fashion in India is changing at the speed of light. It has gone from being an industry that depended on Bollywood to becoming extremely experimental, sophisticated and integral. India has taken a massive leap in the last five years. What are the challenges of being an entrepreneur? None really — because the rewards pretty much dilute the challenges. Even at the end of a really bad day, you realize you are working toward a much bigger goal and with that thought everything somewhat falls into place. How would you describe your style? How would you describe your style? I strive for a chic look. But I have learned to wear anything I feel confident and comfortable in. My look now varies from bohemian, mod to simple chic styles. How do you incorporate your South Asian heritage into your everyday wear? During breezy days in Miami, I like to wear my mom’s salwar dupattas as scarves. Each one of the dupattas has unique patterns and designs which I love. It can make absolutely any outfit pop. What is life like in Miami? The weather and people here in Miami are always hot. 28-year-old graduated from law school, but her dream was to become a designer. Since her childhood in Tampa, Florida, Kamal has been sketching her ideas on napkins, taking them to Pakistan where local tailors would bring her vision to life. Kamal still works with artisans in Lahore to create custom bridal wear and haute couture. he
What drove you to start Kamal Beverly Hills? When I got engaged I searched everywhere for a dress. I had one week till the event and was in panic mode reaching out to every vendor in the U.S. trying to find a dress that reflected who I was: an American-Pakistani woman. I flew to New York, where I ended up settling on an outfit, which my mom and I completely personalized by adding crystals to the bodice, sewing new pants and adding a different dupatta. I couldn’t help but think how many women struggle with the same predicament. How does South Asia inspire your designs? The beauty of South Asia has been a constant inspiration to me throughout my life. I am my happiest walking through the crowded bazaars of Pakistan searching for the perfect pattern of silks, velvets and chiffons. What milestones have you achieved? In our first year of business we dressed countless celebrities, socialites and members of international royalty for red carpet events like the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes.Through our Couture For A Cause program we have sponsored the education and well-being of 100 young girls in remote villages of Pakistan.

What is the most important element in looking polished? Many outfits I see everyday would go from average to style blog worthy with the simple addition of a belt. Why did you love the camera as a kid? I was constantly shooting everything in sight and I took a lot of selfies back then too. What do you find most fascinating about working on editorials? Most editorials allow you to think outside the box, your vision can go as far as you want it to and you can create imagery which could teleport you to that space and time. How has your mother inspired you? My mother was very fashionable, expressing her sense of style with her hair and wardrobe. She has always been very meticulous, well dressed, very outgoing and outspoken. Tell us about a day in your life. Some days are chill while others are very hectic. On shoot days that consists of my whole day. On my days off, I like to do yoga, with a workout in the afternoon, cooking at night, taking care of the street dogs, working on some music or just staying at home and watching a movie with my hubby. Biggest dream? I have a few and don’t want to jinx them right now. Favorite quote/saying? Good things come in small packages. 94

Like many women making a better life for themselves, Arunima Sinha was on her way to a bright future. But during a train ride from Lucknow to Delhi in 2011 for a job related meeting, the course of the then 26-year-old’s future changed. She says a group of men tried to snatch a gold chain she was wearing. “When I said no, four or five of them threw me from the train,” says Sinha. Another train was coming on and it ran over her feet, severing one foot while the bones in the other foot were broken in many places. For seven hours Sinha lay on the tracks, with rats running over her legs, 97

unsure of how many trains ended up running over her in the dark night. “I was screaming, calling for help, but no one came,” says Sinha. After a painful night alone, when the sun came up, some villagers saw her there and rushed her to the hospital where she learned that her left foot under the knee would need to be amputated. She now has a prosthetic and a metal rod in her leg. “I felt like everything was over,” says Sinha. “Even today it is hard for a normal girl, so imagine how hard it is for a handicapped girl.” Dark thoughts entered her mind.
“At first I thought about how hard it was going to be and I wish I had died instead,” says Sinha. But her thoughts quickly changed. “If God saved me, he must have saved me for something,” says Sinha. “Either give up on life completely or you take the situation at hand and live with it.” When she was lying in the hospital bed, Sinha says those around her used the word “helpless” to describe her condition. That’s when she decided that she never wanted that word to be associated with her again.

Sinha chose the toughest goal imaginable to prove her resiliency. “I wanted to do something no one has done before so I could be an example,” says Sinha. “I want to be strong in my heart. If I am strong in my heart I don’t need my physical body to limit me.” In May 2013 she achieved the unthinkable, scaling Mount Everest in 52 days. At first the mountain guide refused to take her because of her prosthetic leg, which kept falling off during the ascent. “I was scared but I kept going,” says Sinha. “I made my handicap an oppor tunity and then lived life.”
Her story is just one of many of the dangers women in India face in their day to day lives. “We need to make each individual woman strong so that she is able to protect herself,” says Sinha. She now plans to open a spor ts academy for poor and physically challenged children in Uttar Pradesh. “A real person is the one that takes a problem, turns it into an oppor tunity and then lives a life,” says Sinha. BIRTH IN A BAG Women in Bangladesh can now give birth safely thanks to a small kit provided by BRAC, a non-profit that works toward solving the problem of high maternal and infant mortality. Many women in Bangladesh still give birth at home, sometimes in unsanitary conditions. BRAC’s solution comes in a pop-tart size bag, which contains the necessary tools for a sterile delivery, including gauze, soap, a plastic sheet, a blade to cut the umbilical cord and a thread to tie it. TAKING A CUT OUT OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING Ohio licensed cosmetologists are required by law to take a course on how to identify human trafficking victims. According to the law, all salons must display posters on how to recognize the women and children pulled into this world.  The posters include a resource center hotline for victims who want to find a way out. The state’s Human Trafficking Task Force found that salons are one of the prime locations where victims are brought by their pimps. Each year, close to one thousand children become victims of human trafficking. 112

The victims do not want the audience to forget that there are several stories like Nirbhaya’s, but they just don’t make it onto newscasts. Farber is hoping that the play will encourage other victims around the globe to speak out about sexual violence and realise that they should feel no shame. “It
is the fabric of silence around the world that enables sexual violence to continue unabated,” says Farber. “The enduring myth is that the victim and not the perpetrator has lost their honour.” Audiences in Delhi, London and Scotland gave the play rave reviews. CORP India One of the upsetting aspects of travelling to India is seeing so much poverty, including children living on the street.

Since 1977, CORP India has been working in Mumbai slums specifically to help girls living on the street. They provide shelter, meals, childcare, healthcare and job training. Every year, close to 30, 000 slum residents, primarily women and children, benefit from these programs. CORP India also has shelters for street kids, including the Sharanam Center for Girls, which opened in 2000. The shelter is in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum and provides a home and schooling for 30 abused, neglected and abandoned girls. The girls end up alone for various reasons, including coming to Mumbai in search of a better life. Director Nirmal Chandappa says another major reason that Mumbai has a high number of female street kids is because girls are often the family members left behind. “Their parents do not realise the impor tance of education and do not send them to school,” says Chandappa. ”Instead girls are forced to do household chores or work in the fields.” Learn more about how you can help at: www.corpindia.org/ 117

heart to heart Heart disease is often considered a man’s problem. But more and more women are dying from heart attacks each year. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women, compared to all cancer deaths combined. One in three women dies from heart disease yearly. That’s one woman every minute. Y et many women believe their hearts are not at risk and as a result, don’t get checkups to catch subtle signs of an impending health disaster. Dr. Anmol Kapoor, a Calgary Cardiologist, and his wife Raman are working to change this one step at a time, through the DIL Walk Foundation. The organization’s goal is to increase awareness of hear t disease, especially among the South Asian community, which has a higher rate of
cardiovascular death compared with other ethnic groups. The DIL Walk Foundation provides education and also free screenings with the emphasis on prevention. Women experience different symptoms related to hear t disease, which are often misdiagnosed. These include shoulder, back and arm pain and fatigue. “Women are busy looking after their family members and they might overlook their own health,” says Dr. Kapoor. “Women with hear t disease tend to have worse outcomes because prevention is lacking and treatment is delayed.” The reason for this, according to Dr. Kapoor, is that most cardiovascular research is focused on men. “That is why we launched this campaign to remind people to ask the women in their lives — How is Your Heart?”

Mini Black Bean, Fire Roasted Tomato & Spinach Corn Tostadas For the Fire-Roasted Black Beans: Ingredients: • 1 tbsp olive oil • 8 cloves garlic, minced • 1 medium white onion, finely chopped • 2 15-oz. can black beans, drained and rinsed • 1 15-oz. can fire-roasted tomatoes, diced • 1 cup chopped fresh spinach • 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels (optional)
• 1 tbsp ground cumin • 1 cup water • cholula hot sauce (or your favorite hot sauce) • (optional) 1/2 teasp smoked paprika • freshly ground black pepper • salt
Directions: 1. In a medium non-stick pot, heat the olive oil on medium heat. 2. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant (~30 seconds). Add the chopped onions and cook until they start to become transluscent. 3. Add the black beans, fire-roasted tomatoes, ground cumin, water, and hot sauce to taste. Add the smoked paprika (if using), a dash of freshly ground black pepper and salt. Mix and combine well. 4. Bring the pot of beans to a simmer, then lower the heat, enough to maintain a gentle simmer. 5. Simmer and reduce the bean mixture until it is reduced by about a third, most of the water has evaporated and the beans start to become thick in consistency (~15 minutes). During this time, be sure to stir frequently. 6. Using a hand masher, mash the beans mixture in the pot to help thicken them, but be sure to keep the mixture chunky and most of the beans intact. 7. Add the freshly chopped spinach and frozen corn kernels. 8. Simmer again on low for about 10 minutes or until you reach a desired thickness and consistency for the beans and all the spinach has cooked. 9. Season with freshly ground black pepper, salt and hot sauce to taste. To Prepare the Mini Tostadas: 1. Prepare a serving tray with a single layer of yellow round intact tortilla chips (to act as mini-tostadas). Note that the tortilla chips do not need to be completely flat, but flat enough so that they can be layered on top. 2. Spoon about 2 tbsp of the bean mixture on top of each mini tostada shell. 3. Top each with chopped green onions and crumbled cotija cheese or queso fresco (if using). 121
