LUCKY CHARMS WELCOME TO THE
premiere
ISSUE!
If you grew up the way I did, then you were probably caught between the cultures of east and west. Our parents instilled in us the values, traditions and fashions of South Asia and we mixed that with what we saw around us. And that’s exactly what the Zardozi woman is all about. A Zardozi woman is many things. She loves her heritage, while embracing the present. She is smart, successful and South Asian. She could be single, engaged or married with kids.
PAGE 16
PAGE 35
And although there are many magazines that tell us about Desi wedding trends, we wanted to go a step further. Zardozi brings you the latest in fashion, lifestyle, beauty and bridal. We want to talk to all of you and find out what is important in your world. Hopefully in our first magazine we have been able to bring you a fresh perspective on our vibrant and diverse South Asian experience. As I looked through the pages of Zardozi, I couldn’t help but notice that there was a lot of emerald. It’s all over Pantone’s color of the year on page 16 and in our feature about model and DJ Zara Tareen on page 39, and there are Great Gatsby inspired emerald heels on page 36. Our Flea Market Finds on page 65 have lots of this jewel tone. Emerald seemed to pop up everywhere I looked.
PAGE 39
Our Graphic Designer, Yasmin Hakim pointed out to me that emerald is the gem for a 55 year anniversary. Maybe this is a lucky sign of many years to come for Zardozi! Tell us what you think of our little passion project. We would love to hear from you at zardozimagazine@gmail.com.
xoxo Rina 4

Jewelry Traditions THE NOSE RING
Hoop Dreams Many more girls would pierce their noses if they knew it would make childbirth easier. Ayurvedic medicine claims that if the left side is pierced, then pushing out a new little cherub will be a cinch.
Being Nosey Pretty nose jewels were considered a sign of marriage. Leonardo Da Vinci believed that the nose set the character of the whole face.

Old School LOVE
Today’s weddings seem like they came right out of the latest Bollywood films, with all their dance routines, outfit changes and over-the-top decor. Zardozi stepped back into a much simpler time to learn how our parents and grandparents tied the knot. 76
wedding | zardozi. The couple Subash and Sadhana Chandarana Where they met London, England How Love at first sight in a shoe store. Married 1975 Guestlist 100
Best memory Sadhana: At the registration I was sick as a dog. So after I just wanted to go home and go to to bed. But it felt really special because we exchanged the rings. Subash: I was getting married to the woman I was in love with.

What did you think when you first saw your bride? Subash: I smiled because I was getting married to this woman who I had known for over a year and a half. What did you think when you first saw him? Sadhana: I was excited to actually be getting married. I was smiling ear to ear. Normally a bride should feel teary and cry, but I wasn’t crying. I was happy I was getting married, but that’s because we lived close to my Mum. 78
wedding | zardozi.
The Ceremony Sadhana: Our Indian ceremony was fun & entertaining because I had never really been to any other person’s wedding before. So it was funny when they washed our toes and did the ring game. My Masi made me sit after each phera. I was only 19 so I was just following orders.
The getaway car No horse and carriage... Subash: After we had the wedding, the car to take us home wasn’t there, so a friend of mine drove us home in a rusty old car. 79
zardozi. | wedding
Dislikes Sadhana: I would have done my makeup better. My Masi did my makeup. I also scrimped on the sari, but I should have just let my Uncle pay for it and splurged on it and bought myself a beautiful outfit like I really wanted Subash: I wish I had a nicer suit, tie and haircut
What about today’s weddings? Sadhana: I think our wedding, was very beautiful. It was more a wedding than a showcase for others. No photographers, videographers, or reception. People just helped themselves to the food and sat in the hall on chairs. And after lunch they went home. Subash: Today wedding’s are too complicated. 80

Let them (not) eat cake!
The popular phrase, “Let them eat cake,” is often attributed to French queen Marie Antoinette. Today your guests can indulge in many other sweet treats.

Cookies
Cake Truffles
FILIGREE COOKIES, SWEETAMBS, ETSY
COTTON CANDY CAKE TRUFFLES, CAKE WORKS BY JEN, ETSY
Cookies date back to early Persia, now Iran. They were used to test oven temperature before baking a large cake. Chocolate chip cookies began as a yummy mistake when a baker ran out of flour and substituted broken pieces of chocolate instead.
Doughnuts
RASBERRY TORTE, BEYOND GLAZE
Gourmet doughnuts look chic piled into a tower or in bite size. Although these treats are considered all-American, the Dutch actually brought them over. The holes in the center came about after bakers noticed the middles were still raw after frying.
Cake truffles are a more recent novelty. Leftover cake crumbs are mixed with frosting and then covered with chocolate, candy or more icing to create a bite size treat. They can be piled together on a cake stand or left individually with a lollipop stick.
Macaroons
LEMON MACAROON, LADURテ右 NEW YORK
In the early 20th century, Pierre Desfontaines Laduree concocted modern macaroons, two meringues held together by a dollop of ganache. The first macaroons were simple almond meringue cookies. Today they come in several flavors like raspberry and pistachio.
