What’s in a name? Our magazine’s name was born from a series of brainstorming sessions between myself and our Co-Founder Alisha Sanghera. We tossed around so many ideas ranging from too long, to too short or too quirky. Nothing quite stuck and nothing felt like it expressed what we wanted our readers to feel when they heard our new magazine’s name. Then one day, Alisha suggested, “Zardozi.” It was short, simple and it spoke volumes. The one word suggests South Asian fashion, which appeals to so many of our readers. Zardozi is a form of embroidery work found from Iran to India. Craftsmen would use gold and silver threads to create attire for the royal courts. Zardozi work was precious and so too is our “baby” Zardozi Magazine. A name can mean so much. Many of the bloggers we featured in this issue, also carefully selected the names for their blogs like Sheryl Luke of Walk in Wonderland. A name also carries a story, like the one told by Shilpa Koshy, who shares her painful experience of surviving sexual abuse, empowering other victims to speak. And it expresses an identity. So many of the designers we feature in our Runway Report, simply branded their lines after their namesake. When a child is born in a South Asian home, there are many traditions surrounding the naming from allowing the Father’s sister to choose a moniker to selecting a name based on the alignment of the stars. In a culture where a name means so much, it was only fitting that we put a lot of thought into naming our newborn Zardozi Magazine. We continue to pour our heart into Zardozi Magazine and hope that Zardozi women everywhere continue to share our passion for exploring our history, culture and identity.

Dabka is a Rajasthani embroidery style that involves coiling a very fine metal thread which is hollow inside. This precise work requires three to five artisans to create intricate patterns that mimic flowers, animals, leaves and birds. SARI SCHOOL Calling Mommy dearest to put on your sari may not be necessary anymore thanks to a Sari School with many locations across India. Rta Kapur Chisti, author of Saris:Tradition and Beyond, started the school in 2009 as a way to promote the livelihoods of the sari weavers, printers and dyers and to ensure that future generations of Indians continue to wear this garment. The school provides two to three hour long courses to learn one of the 108 ways to wear a sari from Gujarati to South Indian. “The sari can reinvent itself to become a long or short dress, a pair of pants or even shorts or a formal gown,” says Chisti.

CALIFORNIA RESIDENT NISHA OZA MADE A BIG JUMP INTO A CAREER IN FASHION AFTER STUDYING ECONOMICS AND MATHEMATICS IN COLLEGE. THE 24-YEAR-OLD TALKS TO ZARDOZI AND SHARES HER FAVORITE LOOKS ON HER PERSONAL STYLE BLOG, THE FASHIONISHA. Where do you work now? I work at Piperlime as a Merchandise Planner for luxury shoes. How would you describe your personal style? A little edgy, a little contemporary and a little girly. It’s hard to put my style in just one category! What is your fall must have? An amazing leather jacket is necessary, worth the money and goes with everything. I also love pencil skirts. How does your heritage influence your style? A lot of my fashion choices are inspired by my Indian background. I might wear a sari blouse as a crop top, paired with a casual pair of black joggers. Every time my mom and I are at the mall, she points at any jewelry and says, “I can get a prettier version of that in India for 50 rupees, I can’t believe they are selling it for $200!” She couldn’t be more right. India has amazing jewelry, so I always stock up when I go back to visit. I wear a chunky necklace or bangles from India almost every day. What advice do you have for someone who wants to pursue a career in fashion? Start interning ASAP! There are many facets to the fashion industry, so build your experience and industry know-how by working at magazines, showrooms, and wherever else you can. It is an incredibly competitive industry so it takes a lot of hard work and long hours to work your way up.

Tell us a little about yourself? Before I started my blog, I was sitting behind a desk, getting dressed everyday for the rat race. But now, I am really happy that I blog full-time and get to document my daily outfits. I wake up everyday looking forward to whatever outfit my mood puts me in. How did you first get interested in fashion? Watching my mum dress up, she was quite the fashionista. She is definitely the reason why I love fashion so much. I think one should try to look pleasant and approachable, because you never know who you’ll bump into. A first impression is important. Describe your personal style I don't really have a specific style, but for the most part I love pairing a basic item with a statement piece.To me, fashion is all about having fun and experimenting. I never say no to trying new styles, but most times you will find me in edgy, urban and chic outfits. Favorite Designers? Celine and Chloe What is the first thing you notice in another person's outfit? I look at how comfortable and happy they look. I think confidence overcomes all and when a person is confident, it is reflected in their look. How does your cultural background influence and inspire your style? My use of color in my outfits and also how I like to accessorize is rooted in my culture, with my own modern spin of course! Number one fashion tip Don't follow trends.You have to wear what you feel
most comfortable and confident in. I was quite close to getting myself a pair of Birkenstocks, but I felt I was not going to be able to pull it off so I finally decided against that. What pieces do you splurge on? If I had to splurge on an item it would definitely be on a handbag. What is the most notable current trend and your thoughts? I am all about the Androgynous look lately. One fashion rule you NEVER break? Visible panty lines are an absolute no. Invest in seamless nude undergarments. Who is your fashion icon? My fashion icon is the everyday woman who has to manage so much in her professional and personal life and still manages to look fabulous! Aside from always looking fabulous, what are your other hobbies? I love cooking. I come from a family that takes pride in making home cooked Indian meals and although I was a little late to that party, I've really been bitten by that bug. What are the top three places we must visit in Los Angeles? The Grove because it’s just beautiful any time of the day, the Fairfax Flea market on Sundays for people watching and vintage/indie finds and anywhere along the Pacific Coast highway. In year 2015 you will be…? I will continue to evolve in my fashion world, meet more people and learn new things.

TWO BROWN GIRLS British girls Seetal Kaur and Aaminah Patel are two friends interested in culture and language with blog posts ranging from Sufism to Sabyasachi. What is your blog about? There is a creative, intelligent, outspoken community of young South Asian women lacking a common source for shared issues. We blog to help people feel connected to their culture no matter which continent they live on. Followers tell us our blog has helped them to understand and love their heritage. What do you do for a living? S: I am a freelance writer and train as a Kathak dancer. A: My plan is to stay out of the work world indefinitely and travel for the rest of my life! I have some serious nomad aspirations. After studying classical Arabic for two years, I plan to take Islamic Studies.

How would you describe your style? S: Pretty laid back. I like neutral, earthy colours and fabrics highlighted by brighter accents. I prefer owning things that have a story. Most of the rings I wear have been collected from different places that I have travelled to and they remind me of those moments and journeys every time I look at them. A: My style is very feminine, but like Seetal’s, is also very laid back. I feel like that element came into our style during university when we couldn’t be bothered to spend hours deciding what we should wear every day! I love wearing dresses as they are so easy to style and look chic with pumps and a blazer thrown on top. Seet likes to say I always dress ‘business casual’ – well, you never know when you will run into an opportunity. How do you incorporate South Asian style into your every day wear? S: I wear payal/jhanjharaa most of the time, have my hand decorated in mehndi or I wear a chunni/ dupatta instead of a scarf.

It has been over ten years since my suicide attempt.Years of insecurity, low self-worth, lack of faith and painful experiences all played a role in me making that life altering decision. It all began when I was a child. I was molested when I was eight years old by who was once my favorite uncle. This shattered my world. But I think what affected me the most was how the situation was handled after. Nobody really wanted to talk about it. Everyone dealt with the pain in silence. I felt alone. I had nobody to talk to, nobody to cry to, at least that’s how it felt at the time. I was just a disappointment. I woke up the next morning and I I became withdrawn. I blamed myself for what happened. I felt couldn’t believe it. What did I do wrong? Why didn’t it work? One survivor is 22-year-old fashion designer Rupa of Rupa’s Designs. After her Mother died, she lived with her Father and Stepmother. “Everyone told me I looked exactly like my mother. It was my reason to live. I didn’t have a mother but at least I had her face,” says Rupa. Six years ago,her stepmother sent four men to attack Rupa with acid as she slept. For six long hours, Rupa was without medical care, until her
Uncle showed up and rushed the young girl to the hospital, where she spent the next three months. She has undergone seven surgeries, while her Uncle struggles to help her financially. Rupa’s Stepmother spent one year in jail and is now out on bail, living with Rupa’s Father. The Indian government recently amended the laws surrounding acid attacks, sending perpetrators to prison anywhere from 10 years to life. But there is still no compensation available for survivors. Rupa has teamed up with a group called Stop Acid Attacks to seek justice for other victims of acid attacks. Thanks to her campaigning, it is now illegal to openly sell acid in India. Stop Acid Attacks is also helping to raise money so that Rupa can fulfill her dream of owning a boutique where she will sell her designs and employ other acid attack survivors.

RAHUL SAHARAN TELLS US WHY HE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHING SURVIVORS OF ACID ATTACKS. What first inspired you to photograph victims of acid attacks? The inspiration was Rupa who went through such a horrible experience in life and yet she still perseveres and works hard to spread awareness and earn money for her treatment and rehabilitation program. She is truly an inspiration after facing such horrific crimes as some people would leave hope and go into depression, but she continues to fight and make things better by setting an example for other women. She works hard to help women understand that they can fight to get justice, which inspires me to do things which will improve our society. Why do you think the acid attack survivor stories need to be shared with the public? In our society there is a very narrow approach towards beauty. One does not need to be physically beautiful to be truly beautiful–and the way we look is based on what was given to us, we are all creations. Beauty means what is from the inside and how you see and treat others, your actions. It should not be described in such narrow boundaries as the features one has on their face or the color of their skin. Every woman is beautiful I feel, and it’s important to make her feel that way.

Why is health and nutrition so important to you? I’ve had severe food allergies since birth. South Asian food has a great variety of vegetable options that get their flavor from masalas. Use quinoa, a mild-tasting grain, to replace rice and roti. What are your tips for a blissful life? Laugh a lot and surround yourself with people who can bring that out of you. What is your dream destination? Somewhere in Asia like Bali or any of the Pacific islands. One of bucket list goals is to do a yoga retreat in Asia and go riding on elephants.
