Zardozi traveled to the motherland recently. For some of our team members it was the first time to India. But something about being there felt like home.There was a sense of belonging, in a place that we had heard about so many times and one, which we use as constant inspiration for Zardozi. India bombarded us with a blur of colour, sights and sounds. From the runways of the Lakme shows to the beautiful blend of East and West style seen on the streets of Mumbai and the traditional chaniya cholis and arms full of bangles in the narrow gullies of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Even the women picking up trash along the seaside wore colourful saris and smiled brightly, taking pride in their work to keep their city clean. In the village school, the little girls had pretty nose and ear piercings. Beautiful fashion inspiration lies everywhere in this mysterious place. It was like taking a step back into time, while also seeing the full force of modernity, melded together in a perfect balance. In Porbandar, Gujarat, we saw walls covered with murals about women's empowerment, urgining passersby to uplift the girl child. Women in South Asia are fighting to break the mould. Like the first female surfer in Bangladesh or the women in slums bringing sanitation practices to their families and communities. Our trip brought us back home with a renewed desire to bring you the most interesting stories and latest fashion trends. Whether it is a trip to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or one of the many other countries where we find the South Asian diaspora, Zardozi women are embracing many cultures while staying true to their South Asian roots and continuing to push the boundaries of Zardozi woman power. We hope to continue to bring that blend to you our beloved readers, who always inspire us with their stories of courage and strength. "Our day-to-day lives — the people we meet, the things we see around us, the places we visit, etc. The process for most of our collection starts with a feeling, music (influences a large part of our designs), brainstorming and bouncing ideas off each other. During this session, both of us suggest ideas on a particular topic until we come to the conclusion that the concept is feasible

My father sent me abroad to pursue a degree in Business Management from The Wharton School of Business. After returning to India, I saw a vast potential in the fine clothing and couture industry that was evolving in the country and in 1987 I opened India’s first multi-designer boutique, Ensemble along with Rohit Khosla and my wife Sal. From the very beginning, I was attracted to the draped form. The sari, as worn on the body, is an incredible influence on me because of the way it wraps and moulds on different people. Describe the first time you sewed or sketched a design. I have always sketched fashion from the time 63

Ultimately my inspiration comes from India’s rich traditions of craftsmanship, particularly when it comes to things like embroideries. Nothing is more amazing than a beautifully executed, intricate, fine technique. Who is the Tarun Tahiliani bride? My bridal couture imbues the bride with elements of romance, mystery and sensuality. The Tarun Tahiliani bride loves quality and fit and knows style is not just what one wears, but how one wears it. They live in their heritage and yet they are also modern. They are individualistic and flexible as time changes. The brides draw their allure and confidence from the Tarun Tahiliani brand — which is a modern Indian love story and romance is

The separate entrances of the bride and groom, especially at the mendhi, are always fun too. I have seen people enter on camels, horses, cycles, rickshaws and elevated platforms. Which big names have you worked with? Earlier this year I was asked to conceptualize and execute the mendhi event for one of Pakistan’s leading actresses, Sanam Saeed. She was a delight to work with! Sanam wanted an intimate Bohemian chic mendhi and it has been one of my favourite events to date. I have worked with Nida Butt, one of Pakistan's leading theater directors, known for bringing Grease and Mamma Mia to Pakistan. I have also had the privilege of working very closely with Pakistan's legendary fashion designer Maheen Khan. I have done a few shows and photo shoots with her where I was in charge of set design and art direction.
